Undecided voters unimpressed with Biden, Trump after first presidential debate: ‘Considering voting third party’

All eyes were on President Biden and former President Donald Trump ’s first debate of 2024 Thursday night — but as their advertising buys proved, both were interested primarily in reaching swing-state voters, who are likely to decide the election.

The Post talked to undecided voters in battleground states and got their reaction to the face-off — and Biden’s shocking performance.

Former President Donald Trump looks on during the first presidential debate of the 2024 elections on June 27, 2024.

Nathan Punwani, 36, Phoenix, Ariz., physician

“Seeing Biden yesterday, I think he’s a decent guy and means well, but that was not the performance I would expect from a commander in chief,” said Punwani, who voted for Biden last time.

“He just meandered in his answers, and he didn’t inspire confidence in me.”

He’s wondering if another candidate might end up the Democratic nominee.

Nathan Punwani, a physician living in Phoenix, Arizona.

“The debate made me in some ways more uncertain because now there’s potentially a prospect for a new candidate on the Democratic side,” he said. “It’s hard for me to see Biden continuing like this. I’m more interested in who the Democrats would pick as a potential successor in August.”

But Punwani is hesitant to support Trump because he’s too divisive: “The legal cases going on and Jan. 6 both make his brand a little bit noxious,” he said.

Korry Franke, Nazareth area, Pa., pilot for a major US airline

Franke didn’t seem a big fan of either Trump or Biden going into debate night. Watching the match, though, made things “very clear” when “looking at the two. The visual alone!”

We “don’t want the name-calling,” we “just want results,” Franke said.

Korry Franke, a pilot from Nazareth, Pa.

“I don’t care who was the worst president. I sure don’t care what their golf scores are. I just want my neighbors and my kids to have a better tomorrow than they do today, and I think that’s a clear choice,” he concluded — he’s voting for Trump.

Kunal Lobo, Tucson, Ariz., recent Ph.D. graduate

Lobo voted for Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016 but is undecided this year.

“I didn’t love him, but I liked him a decent amount,” he said of 2020 Biden, adding that he preferred Andrew Yang and Mike Bloomberg.

Kunal Lobo, a recent Ph.D. graduate in Arizona.

Lobo thought Biden would be a unifier, but the president “ended up being extremely divisive. Even if you don’t like Trump, as Bill Maher said, you can’t hate everyone who voted for him.”

He had a mixed reaction to the debate. “It definitely didn’t push me toward Biden, but it didn’t push me more toward Trump because there were so many lies,” he said. Trump “didn’t answer the questions, and he kept repeating the same talking points over and over again.”

“It pushed me away from Biden and almost pushed me away from Trump as well. I’m almost considering voting third party.”

Taylor Johnson, 34, Dayton, Ohio, works in IT

Johnson, an undecided voter, didn’t watch the whole debate but saw parts of it and watched more Friday.

“Honestly, after seeing it, I’m a little disappointed,” she said. “I was hoping we would talk about the issues that are facing America right now. From what I have seen and heard, it was just children bickering with each other.”

Taylor Johnson, an IT worker from Dayton, Ohio.

Still, she came to some conclusions on the candidates.

“I’m also a little concerned about Biden’s cognitive situation. Even when he was asked a question, it didn’t seem like he could answer but kind of danced around it. It sounded like Trump did a better job.”

Pastor: slain college student will ‘graduate’, te’nya mckinley, 18, killed in glenwood avenue parking lot.

phd tutor jobs

YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Kenneth Simon of New Bethel Baptist Church called Te’Nya McKinley, the 18-year-old Thiel College student who was shot to death June 9 in a parking area beside a building along Glenwood Avenue on the South Side a “positive role model to so many young people, a young lady who had a good head on her shoulders and knew what she wanted in life and was determined to pursue it.”

He framed much of his eulogy by calling her death her “graduation invitation,” explaining that her graduation is her life with God.

“I have heard nothing but good, positive and great things about this young lady that we celebrate today, who had so much potential, a kind, friendly, fun-loving young lady who was extremely intelligent, an excellent student, a young lady who was goal-oriented and purpose driven who had — and has a bright and promising future.”

He explained, saying “It doesn’t get any brighter than where she is right now.”

He said all of her family, “her community, her teachers, her professors, were all so proud of her because they knew she was an outstanding young lady who was going places.”

At Thiel, she was “studying to be a neurosurgeon,” Simon said.

“She wasn’t a troubled child, not one to engage in destructive or negative behavior,” he said. “She was not a disrespectful young lady or a mean or violent person but a good daughter, a Christian young lady, a positive role model for other young people to emulate.”

He said McKinley “was tragically taken from us by thoughtless, callous and misguided young people who have no respect for human life and no regard for the innocent victims of their violent and destructive actions.”

McKinley suffered a fatal gunshot wound in a car in a lot next to a building on Glenwood Avenue on the South Side during a violent time this month that saw five homicides in the city. Gunfire rang out while a “car meet” was taking place at that location near Sherwood Avenue, police said.

A conflict there led to roughly 100 gunshots being fired, police said. That is about how many bullet shell casings were found at the scene.

Police said multiple “car meets” took place that day in the city, describing a “car meet” as “vehicles and the people driving them disregarded traffic laws, the safety of themselves and others, and common sense.” Dozens of vehicles and people participated in the car meets in Youngstown that day, police stated in a press release.

During the eulogy, Simon said “the sad reality of the times in society we live in today is that we have so many young people who are disconnected from God. I’m just going to tell it like it is,” adding “They don’t know Him, don’t reverence Him, don’t have Him in their lives.”

He said “There is a reason they don’t know Him — because there are some parents who have brought children into this world who neglected what God commands and expects of a parent to do for the children they bring into the world. And that is to make sure that the children know Him and teach them His word.”

The Bible “instructs us to train up a child in the way he or she should go, to bring them up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. If we are going to bring a child into this world, then we have a responsibility to God and to the child to make sure that they know Him.”

Simon said the “good news” is that McKinley “knew God. She knew Him. She had a relationship with Him.” He said, “If you were around her, you knew she had a relationship with Jesus.”

Her death “didn’t really end her life because true believers don’t die,” he said, adding, “She lives on in a better place.”

He said some people may say how sad it is that McKinley “did not get to graduate from college. I’m here to let you know there will be a graduation celebration for Ms. Te’Nya McKinley. It’s going to be where she is right now because she has achieved the highest degree that only can be given to a child of God. She already got her BA degree. That’s born again for some of you who don’t know what I’m talking about. She did that while she was down here.

“And now she will be getting her master’s degree because she has gone on to live with the master, which makes this service not a funeral for her passing. This is a homegoing celebration and an invitation for all of us to be there for the graduation party she will be having up there. There is going to be a graduation party, you all. And today she is extending the invitation.”

Though the concept of a “car meet” may be new to Youngstown area residents, the Palm Beach, Florida, area has been dealing with them for a while now, according to the Channel 12 news in Palm Beach.

In Palm Beach, they also call them “street takers” and “street racing.”

“They just shut down north, south, east, west traffic just to do their donuts or whatever else they’re doing,” Rey Alonso, Florida director of the Beat The Heat program said, according to a February Channel 12 report.

“Not only are you of course impeding all the traffic, but the danger you’re putting on people. Many of those cars go out of control. You’ve got families, pedestrians, cars all around them. It’s just crazy.”

VIGIL: A Stop The Violence prayer vigil will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenwood Community Park on Glenwood Avenue near Sherwood Avenue. The campaign involves pastors and community leaders meeting to address community violence. The event will involve prayers for the community and the families of those who have been killed this year in the city.

‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity: phs graduate shelby anderson hopes to build on collegiate national title.

phd tutor jobs

PARKERSBURG — Shelby Anderson began dancing when she was three years old.

Eight years later, she began cheerleading. In high school, she cheered for the Parkersburg Big Reds.

In all that time, Anderson never imagined she’d one day become a collegiate national champion. However, that’s exactly what happened.

Back in April, Anderson, a member of the stunt team at Oklahoma City University, got to compete with her squad at the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. Participating in the NAIA Intermediate All-Girls category, the Stars compiled an event score of 90.8959 to defeat runner-up Texas Wesleyan (87.9861) and claim the title.

“It was honestly surreal,” said Anderson, a 2022 PHS graduate. “I was never expecting to be able to go to Daytona. It was such an amazing accomplishment and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was so much fun to bond with my team and ultimately come home with the title.”

OCU made this happen despite its head coach resigning in January. Savannah Owen, a former Stars cheerleader, stepped in to coach and put together a routine for the team in about 30 days. OCU performed it in preliminaries and then again in the finals.

“It was our first year in the competition since 2014,” Anderson explained. “We had to send in a video showing some of our team’s skills to qualify.”

In cheer and dance, you get used to performing in front of crowds. Competing at nationals, however, had a much different feel to it, Anderson said.

“It was at Ocean Center and anyone who had kids in the competition or had tickets could come watch,” she said.

“It was quite the crowd. It was definitely a lot different than being in a gym. It was very surreal out on stage. It’s such a big competition. I had a lot of nerves, but I overcame it. I knew I needed to be confident and deliver the skills I needed to help my team.”

Anderson, a marketing major, will be a junior at Oklahoma City this year. The Stars graduated just one senior from the national title team and will have the bulk of their athletes back this year.

In the meantime, Anderson is doing everything she can to stay sharp. Her twin sister, Abby Anderson, runs cross country and track at the University of Charleston and helps her with endurance.

“It’s definitely a lot more work than people would think,” Anderson said. “I do a lot of weight lifting, but there’s also a lot of cardio involved. To get through two-and-a-half minutes straight of stunts, tumbling and jumping, you have to be strong and also be able to move and have that cardio aspect as well.”

Anderson credits her high school coaches, Amy Burns and Jenna Bell, for helping her prepare to be a college athlete.

“They gave me the confidence and advice and skill sets needed to move on the collegiate level of cheer,” Anderson said. “They’re amazing coaches and I felt extremely prepared going into OCU.”

Anderson has accomplished more than she ever thought possible when she stepped onto OCU’s campus two years ago. She still has two years left at the school and is excited to see where it takes her. The Stars begin practicing again in September.

“I definitely want to thank my parents, Rob and Kelly, for always supporting me in everything I do,” she said. “I want to thank my coach who stepped in, Savannah Owen, for leading us to victory in Daytona. And, I want to thank my teammates for being so supportive and coming together to accomplish this.”
