According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost of a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is $106,860. That’s not a small amount of money! But there are many ways to cut those costs and, in some cases,  eliminate  those costs.

Featured Programs

The overall cost of your doctorate depends on your specific circumstances. For example, earning your Ph.D. at a public university will likely be more affordable than at a private university. Currently, the average cost of a doctorate at a public university is $72,990. At a private university, you’ll pay an average of $101,810. So, to cut costs, you might consider a program at a public university.

Your choice of academic discipline and the length of the program also inform how much your doctorate costs. STEM fields are more expensive; the longer the program, usually between four and eight years, the higher the cost. The amount of financial aid received is another key factor in determining how much you must pay for your degree.

These factors can help reduce how much your Ph.D. costs. But a fully-funded Ph.D. program can eliminate your education costs by providing tuition reimbursements and stipends to pay for housing and other living costs. And there are many fully-funded Ph.D. programs in business to choose from!

Frequently Asked Questions

These programs are available with full funding due to the generous donations and contributions made by grants, alumni, and local businesses and organizations. Students contribute their time and energy through assistantships and fellowships by working with faculty members in support of their research projects and publications. Note that some of the awards for Ph.D. studies only cover tuition costs and fees, and students are then responsible for their living expenses or will have to seek out additional scholarships and grants.

In many cases, yes. Students who receive full funding often have to complete a teaching or research assistantship. This involves working with a faculty member in their professional and scholarly pursuits, which would mostly involve writing research papers and dissertations. These assistantships typically require about 20 hours of work per week. In the case of teaching assistantships, you will often work as a tutor, be available for office hours, or actually teach classes.

In almost every case, all you have to do to get the fellowship or assistantship is to be accepted to the program! After being admitted, funds will be allocated to you. In many instances, the funds will be set up with a monthly allowance that you can use for rent and other necessities. You must adhere to specific rules and policies set forth by the school that will be outlined to you after being accepted. You will have to maintain satisfactory progress in the program to retain your funding.

The exact percentage of Ph.D. programs that are fully funded varies greatly depending on the institution and field of study you are pursuing. Most Ph.D. funding depends on the program and the university. Some programs offer full tuition remission plus a stipend, while others may only offer partial funding. It is essential to research the specific Ph.D. program you are interested in to determine what kind of funding is available and what your part will ultimately be.

The high cost of attendance is considered the most challenging aspect of earning a Ph.D. degree. This can result in overwhelming student loan debt – the average loan debt is $125,276 for Ph.D. holders, according to the Education Data Initiative. Keep in mind that you must also account for other expenses, such as living expenses, traveling expenses, and incidental expenses, in the cost of attendance. No wonder then that fully-funded Ph.D. programs in business administration and management are highly sought-after! Earning your Ph.D. in business administration and management degree with little to no debt will be more enjoyable because you will have greater financial peace of mind.

Yes, you may be eligible for grants to help offset the cost of your Ph.D. These area-specific grants offer plenty of opportunities to fund your graduate education, particularly the expenses not covered by teaching and research assistantships. The trick is to be patient and persistent in finding and applying to these financial aid programs.

How to win business scholarships

Resources for business students, frequently asked questions about business scholarships.

  • Additional scholarship lists to explore

Now you’ve got a great list of business scholarships at your fingertips that you can begin applying to. But before you begin your essays, it can be useful to take a moment for some reflection. Try sitting down and brainstorming the answers to a few questions to give you some perspective as to the approach you’ll take in your applications. Here are some ideas for questions to ask yourself:

  • How do I hope to change the world with my career in business?
  • What experiences inspired me to pursue business?
  • What have I accomplished so far that demonstrates my future potential in the field?
  • Where do I see myself ten years from now?
  • Who inspired me to pursue business and what about their story resonated with me?

As you write the answers to these questions, don’t worry about word limits, succinctness, or even grammar or punctuation! You can write in bullet points, paragraphs, or whatever works best for you. Once you’ve got them all down on the page, you can use this as a resource when you begin your essays. That way, once you have the prompt in front of you, you can focus on how to make your essay powerfully-worded, and you already have the content laid out.

10 PhD scholarships in the UK for international students 2022

PhD scholarships

With a strong research culture on top of encouraging interdisciplinary research, the UK is a great choice if one wants to pursue a PhD scholarship in an exciting and stimulating environment with many research links. The UK is one of the most popular destinations for many international students with many top-ranked and world-class universities and a welcoming culture as well.

Being a research powerhouse means more access to cutting-edge research facilities, which can go a long way in conducting research during your PhD studies. The UK, however, as a developed Western country, has higher living costs, with some major cities and programmes bearing notoriously expensive price tags.

This can be a heavy burden for international students seeking a UK PhD degree. Fortunately, the UK has a great list of university PhD scholarships that may help you realise your dream.

You should apply by Jan. 31, 2022. If you are successful, you would be asked to select two projects; depending on your supervisor’s agreement, you can be given either your first choice or second one.

Oxford University – Clarendon Scholarship

The Clarendon Scholarship is one of the most famous PhD scholarships. You do not need to submit a separate application form for this scholarship; when you apply for a Oxford University PhD programme, you automatically qualify to apply for the Clarendon Scholarship.

Your preferred programme at Oxford may have different deadlines but generally, January is the last application deadline to be eligible for this scholarship. This particular PhD scholarship covers full tuition fees and a living stipend of 15,609 pounds (2021-22 rate).

All in all, if you have been planning to pursue your PhD studies in the UK but are short on funds, these scholarships are great choices, and will definitely help you achieve your dream!

Economist Jonathan Levin, former chair of the Stanford Department of Economics and a renowned expert in the field of industrial organization, will be the next dean of Stanford Graduate School of Business, President John Hennessy and Provost John Etchemendy announced today.

Jonathan Levin, next dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (Image credit: L.A. Cicero)

Levin, who joined the Stanford faculty in 2000, is the Holbrook Working Professor in Price Theory at Stanford University. He was chair of the Department of Economics from 2011 to 2014. He is also a professor, by courtesy, at Stanford Graduate School of Business, a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and director of the Industrial Organization Program at the National Bureau for Economic Research.

Levin will succeed Garth Saloner, who is stepping down after seven years as dean. Levin’s appointment is effective September 1, 2016, when he becomes Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean.

“Jonathan is an outstanding teacher, a skilled and innovative administrator and a brilliant scholar who has deep understanding of both the academic enterprise and the workings of industry and government,” Etchemendy said. “Importantly, he brings a vision for the future of management education that is rooted in his extensive scholarship on the evolving needs of a global business community. I have every confidence he will continue the school’s strong trajectory.”

Levin is known for his scholarship in industrial organization. His research has spanned a range of topics including auctions and marketplace design, the economics of organizations, consumer finance and econometric methods for analyzing imperfect competition. His current interests include Internet platforms, the health care system and ways to incorporate new datasets into economic research.

Search committee co-chair Mary Barth, the Joan E. Horngren Professor of Accounting, said that the committee was impressed by Levin’s “thorough grasp of what is required to maintain, and enhance, the high quality of teaching and research at the school.”

“The GSB is unparalleled in the overall excellence of its faculty, staff and students,” Barth said. “Jonathan brings not only stellar academic credentials but a fresh perspective and leadership skills that will help the GSB maintain its preeminence for years to come.”

Levin received the American Economic Association’s John Bates Clark Medal in 2011 as the economist under the age of 40 who has made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Econometric Society and a former Guggenheim Fellow, among many honors. He has won department and school-wide awards for distinguished teaching at Stanford. He served as an elected member of the American Economic Association’s Executive Committee, and was named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.

Levin earned a BS in math and a BA in English from Stanford in 1994, an MPhil in economics from Oxford University in 1996 and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999. He joined the Stanford faculty as an assistant professor in 2000 and became a full professor in 2008.

In addition to his academic research, Levin has consulted for a number of Fortune 500 companies as well as the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Treasury. He was part of the expert group that designed the first vaccine Advanced Market Commitment, and was one of the economists who participated in the design of the FCC’s broadcast incentive auction.

As dean, Levin will lead a school with 1,000 students and 272 faculty members that is at the forefront of curricular innovation, offering tailored education, “flipped” classrooms, multidisciplinary learning and immersive global opportunities.

“The GSB is devoted to transforming lives by preparing future leaders to change organizations and change the world,” Levin said. “It will be an honor to join such a committed, dedicated faculty and to support their mission of applying both academic rigor and real-world relevance to their research. Deepening our understanding of management and bringing that knowledge into the classroom couldn’t be more exciting.”

Founded in 1925, the GSB has built a global reputation based on its management and leadership programs, including the two-year MBA, one-year Master of Science for experienced leaders (MSx), and PhD programs. Non-degree certificate programs include Executive Education courses and Stanford Ignite, a part-time program in innovation and entrepreneurship offered at Stanford and in five countries around the world. In addition, the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (Stanford Seed) is a unique business school–led initiative working to end the cycle of global poverty.

The Knight Management Center, home to the GSB, opened in 2011 to the highest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum environmental certification. The complex offers flexible classroom spaces for hands-on experiential learning and team-based learning, and convening space for roughly 1,000 graduate students.

The GSB draws on the energy of Silicon Valley, one of the world’s most dynamic economic centers, to bring innovation into the classroom with case study protagonists, guest lecturers and co-teachers. Moreover, faculty scholars benefit from access to data from a wide range of organizations around the world.

Among the school’s 124 distinguished tenure-track faculty are three Nobel laureates and 19 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio is among the lowest of any graduate business program.

The Class of 2016 has a total of 410 students. International students from 62 countries represent 44 percent of the class. Forty-two percent of the Class of 2016 are women, and U.S. minorities represent 23 percent, both all-time highs. The GSB has a 6.1 percent admission rate, and the deliberately small size enables students to engage deeply with world-known faculty as well as their peers.

Scholarships

International Money.

In an effort to make study abroad affordable for all students, the University at Buffalo offers numerous study abroad scholarship options.

UB scholarships include those administered by the Office of International Education and by various UB departments. In addition, students are encouraged to explore external funding options. Scholarship donors share the goal of ensuring that the largest possible number of UB students will have the opportunity to gain the many benefits study abroad provides. Start researching possible scholarships early—at least one to two years prior to when you plan to go abroad. Many nationally competitive scholarship deadlines are well before your study abroad program application deadline, often a year or more prior to the actual award year. Remember that you may be able to apply general scholarships toward international experiences, so extend your search beyond study abroad scholarships. Also check with the program sponsor about scholarships designated specifically for their program participants.

Several scholarships are strictly for students studying a specific academic area or apply only to programs in specific locations. Be sure to read the scholarship description before applying.

Though students may apply to more than one scholarship, it is unlikely that one student will be awarded multiple scholarships from the Office of International Education.

Scholarships awarded by the Office of International Education are highly competitive and there are not funds to award all applicants. Applying for scholarships should be only one part of financial planning for study abroad. No one scholarship is large enough to fully fund a study abroad program.

Students are only considered for scholarships awarded by the Office of International Education if they have an application open in our application portal. This also goes for students studying abroad on Other SUNY programs .
