Leveraging presentation tools for enhanced learning

Presentation tools allow educators to organize information into a slideshow format and create dynamic, interactive presentations using text, images, audio, video, quizzes, and other multimedia elements to help bring lessons to life. Because most presentation tools are collaborative, interactive, and visually engaging, they help improve learning outcomes, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

When reviewing presentation tools, there are several key factors you want to look for. The tool you choose will, of course, depend on your needs in the classroom, but at a minimum, look for a presentation tool that are

• User-friendly
• Easy to use (even for those who aren’t tech-savvy)
• Visually appealing

The presentation tools below incorporate these factors, so read on for the overview of each tool and the pros and cons of each.

1. Google Slides

Google Slides is a free presentation tool that allows you to insert images, add text and shapes, change colors, and collaborate with others on the same presentation in real time. Plus, collaborators can insert comments and chat with others viewing the presentation. Users can download Google Slides presentations in other formats as well, such as PowerPoint or PDF, and share them via email or publish them to a website or blog. As a web-based tool, Google Slides is accessible from any device with an internet connection.

Pros: It allows for collaboration and real-time co-authoring. It’s also free to use, user-friendly, and web-based. It offers a multimedia embedding option and the ability to import presentations from PowerPoint. It also provides a variety of templates, fonts, and colors for customization.

Cons: It has limited functionality without an internet connection. It also has a limited selection of slides, templates, effects, and theme design choices, as well as generic graphic assets.

2. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck is a cloud-based presentation tool that allows users to create slide presentations using images, text, charts, graphs, and audio and video. Users can download presentations as videos or into a PowerPoint format to share via email, social media, or a website. Users have access to millions of Creative Commons licensed stock photos and a wide array of fonts, layouts, and image filters, and they can choose from a variety of preloaded themes.

Pros: Users get access to millions of free images, and it offers lots of design choices, tutorials, and sharing options. It also offers special pricing to qualifying nonprofits, students, and educators.

Cons: There’s no built-in collaboration capability, and most features require the user to be online. The free version only offers one presentation, and users must pay to export slides.

Canva is an online graphic design platform that’s useful for creating classroom presentations. The tool features a large library of premade presentation templates that are searchable by theme and style and created especially for the education community. You can add shapes, fonts, GIFs, animations, video, and audio to your presentations, and you can easily save your slides to use as handouts.

You can also create other assets, such as posters, calendars, and social media graphics. Canva for Education is free for eligible students and teachers; there’s also a paid Pro subscription tier.

Pros: Canva offers a free plan and access to a free, video-based Canva for Beginners course. It’s easy to use for designers and non-designers alike, and there’s a wide variety of templates and features.

Cons: Some features aren’t available on a mobile device. There aren’t a lot of customization options available, and it’s difficult to use on a small screen.

4. Piktochart

Piktochart is an easy-to-use, intuitive presentation tool. Features include a large selection of customizable presentation templates, including a selection specifically for educators. It also offers real-time collaboration functionality and the ability to upload fonts, access stock images, and add interactive elements to your presentations. You can also create other visual content like posters, infographics, flyers, videos, and more. Presentations are downloadable in PowerPoint and PDF formats.

Pros: It offers customizable presentation templates specifically for educators. Its real-time collaboration features allow users to co-create presentations, and it has a simple drag-and-drop interface.

Cons: Much of Piktochart’s functionality is only available with paid Pro accounts, and real-time co-authoring isn’t available.

5. Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is probably the most well-known of all presentation tools. If you haven’t used PowerPoint in a while, you might not know that it’s improved significantly over the years. Its rich features get high ratings from many educators.

PowerPoint offers both desktop and cloud-based functionality that enables third-party content like 3D objects and animations. The web version of PowerPoint, called PowerPoint Online, is included with Microsoft Office suite, and it’s free with a Microsoft 365 subscription. PowerPoint Online allows real-time collaboration with others on presentations.

Pros: It offers preformatted layouts and has smartphone laser pointer functionality. It integrates seamlessly with OneDrive and other Microsoft apps. Office 365 Education is free for eligible institutions, and most educators are already familiar with the tool.

Cons: The track changes function is only available in the desktop version, and it’s limited when it comes to offering collaboration and interactive features that make presentations more dynamic.

Prezi is popular with educators for a few key reasons: It’s free, it easily integrates video, and it’s accessible online. Instead of using slide decks, Prezi features a single canvas on which you place presentation elements, allowing you to highlight items without switching slides. Prezi “paths” allow you to present text, pictures, and video clips in the order you choose. This feature provides lots of flexibility and a more dynamic presentation, but it also means there’s a steeper learning curve.

Pros: It features animations and a videoconferencing integration. Users have the ability to present a slide deck while interacting with students in real time.

Cons: It can be difficult to use — the learning curve is steeper than for some of the other presentation tools here.

Visme is a presentation tool that offers features like real-time collaboration, free stock images and icons, predesigned templates and pitch decks, and lots of interactive elements, including charts, graphs, animations, and mind maps. Visme offers offline presenting as well. Presentations are customizable, and you can even record your screen and share it with others via both audio and video or audio only.

Pros: A free plan is available. It’s a browser-based tool, so you can access it from any internet-connected device. There’s also a support team available to answer questions.

Cons: It’s more challenging to learn than a simpler tool like Canva. The free plan offers a limited number of features.

Online Communication Tools

Effective communication is the key to successful teaching and learning, whether in a physical classroom or a virtual classroom. However, maintaining online communication with not one, but over twenty students is undoubtedly challenging.

Communication platforms help overcome it; they enable communication with larger groups, with video conferencing, instant messaging, audio calls , virtual rooms, and more, with any device and from anywhere.

• Create an agenda or a plan for each online class and share it prior to the lesson

• Record your online classes or lectures and share them with students 
• Students can re-watch the videos if they were absent or during exam revisions. You can also have the video recorded prior to the lesson and have it shared with the students when you are on leave  
• If you are teaching the same lesson to different classes, you can make use of a pre-recorded lesson to avoid repetitive teaching 
• Encourage students to learn independently with pre-recorded video lessons. The chance of students learning a concept better is higher when they understand it on their own

Well, these are all great! But for educators who don’t want to share their videos with the whole world; can use Google Classroom. Just add the material video in there. It will show up as a video with layouts like youtube, all the same except for the fact that only the ones in the class group will see. It is a good platform for assignments and easy to use effectively with google docs, google drive and google meet. The only con for me as a student is we can only add 20 photos to it. And these days actually we students teach the programs to teachers. 😉 Have a good school day!

Best Interactive Presentation Tools for Teachers and Students

The purpose of today’s post is to share with you some of the best interactive presentation tools you can use to create engaging presentations without the need for any graphic design knowledge. All of these platforms offer pre-designed customizable presentation templates that you can easily edit and personalize to your preference.

Almost, all of these tools include integrated libraries where you can search for and use stock images and multimedia materials. They also empower you with a wide variety of helpful features including collaborative ones enabling you to invite team members and work collaboratively on the same presentation.  

While some of the featured presentation tools below provide interactive features, there is always the possibility to make your presentations super interactive using tools that are designed specifically for that purpose.

I have already reviewed some of  engagement-promoting applications that teachers and educators can implement to turn their presentations into lively dialogic hubs using live polls, Q&A, questionnaires, word clouds, and quizzes. These engagement tools are perfect to integrate with the presentations tools below.

1. Google Slides

Google Slides is another good presentation tool I recommend for teachers and educators. It  offers a wide variety of powerful features, all for free. Besides the basic things that you can do on any editor (e.g., insert images, add text and shapes, change colour, etc), Google Slides also offers collaborative features that enable team members to collaborate on the same presentation in real time.

Collaborators can insert comments and chat with those who are viewing the presentation. As the owner of the presentation, you can always keep track of changes made to the presentation and at any time reverse to earlier versions. 

Presentations you create via Google Slides can be downloaded in different formats including Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe PDF. They can also be emailed, published online as a webpage or be embedded in a website or blog. When you share your presentation with others you get to control what they can do (e.g., editor, commenter, or viewer). 

3- Flipsnack

Flipsnack is an interactive presentation maker that allows users to create and share animated presentations with a realistic 3D page flip effect. This software allows you to either create from scratch your presentation or you can simply pick one of the fully-customizable templates available in the built-in library and adjust it to your own taste and needs.

In terms of customization, Flipsnack comes equipped with a large variety of interactive elements, such as photo-slideshows; GIFs; audio and video elements; social media buttons, and map embedding.

Flipsnack also offers multiple download options, so you can download your presentation as HTML5; web PDF; PDF for print; GIF; PNG; JPEG, and MP4, or just share it online with your target audience. Check out Flipsnack’ s teacher review to learn more about this platform.

4. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck is another powerful presentation making tool for teachers. It works on the web, iPad, and iPhone. Some of the interesting features it offers include over 40 million  free Creative Commons licensed images to use in your slides together with the ability to upload and add your own images, access to a huge collection of layouts and fonts, tons of professionally designed templates to choose from, seamless and real time syncing between the web and mobile apps, and many more.

Another interesting functionality provided by Haiku Deck is the ability to use your phone as a teleprompter allowing you to turn it to a remote in presentation mode. When it comes to sharing your Haiku Deck presentations you have various options to choose from including the ability to share decks through email, on social media, present decks on a projector, embed or export decks to PowerPoint or Keynote, download as PDF, and more.

Haiku Deck has a special version for the education community called Haiku Deck Classroom. Teachers use it to help students create  engaging presentations and showcase their learning.

Some of the features it provides includes advanced privacy settings for the class, YouTube embeds, presentation audio, save to video, broadcast presentations to the entire class, and many more. Haiku Deck Classroom costs $99/year for a single teacher and 150 students.

Visme is another good presentation tool to consider. It offers a number of key features including real-time collaboration, beautiful pre-designed templates and pitch decks, tons of free stock images and icons, interactive maps, over 50 charts and graphs, mind maps, and many more.

You can either start creating your presentation from Scratch or choose from the collections of ready-made templates. Customize the presentation to your own needs and when you are done present and share with others. 

Using Visme’s Presenter Studio, you can easily record your screen (audio and video or audio only) and share it asynchronously with others. Other interesting features provided include the ability to import and export Microsoft PowerPoint as editable presentations, access to 125 fonts, create processes and workflows using tables and diagrams, create your own library of icons and PDFs for future presentations, and more.

6. Piktochart

Piktochart is probably one of the best alternatives to Canva and Visme. It is ideal for creating different types of visual content including presentations, posters, infographics, flyers, videos, and many more. The templates library features a huge selection of customizable presentation templates including a section specifically for education. 

Piktochart also offers real-time collaborative features allowing users to co-create presentations. Other interesting features provided by Piktochart include the ability to upload your fonts, design custom colour palette, access stock photos or upload your own, add interactive maps to your presentations, present online or download your presentation in .ppt or PDF format, and many more. 

7. Online whiteboard tools

While they are not presentation tools in the conventional sense of the word, online whiteboarding tools can also be used for creating and sharing presentations. They are especially ideal for teamwork collaboration.

They enable you to work together, brainstorm ideas, organize throughs and communicate complex data in visually engaging formats. Some of my favourite online whiteboards include Google Jamboard, Lucidspark, and Conceptboard. 8-  Canva Presentation

Canva, the popular design platform, is one of my favourite presentation tools out there. The site features a huge library of beautifully designed templates and offers tons of features and multiple presentation modes.

Here is how to make a presentation on Canva: head over to Canva and type ‘Presentation’ in the search box. Browse through the pre-made presentation templates. You can filter your search by theme and style. 

The Education section embeds a wide range of awesome templates created specifically for the education community. Once you find the template you are interested in, click to open  it in Canva editor where you can start editing it the way you like.

You can add photos, GIFs, insert videos and music, add shapes and fonts,  etc. Use animations to add a creative effect to your slides. Once your presentation is ready you can choose among various presentation modes.

“Choose from standard presentation, presenter mode, video recording. Or, on bad hair days, choose an audio-only video presentation mode. Save your slides as a PDF for handouts, export them as PowerPoint .pptx files, or turn them into an interactive website!”

Canva also offers collaborative features that allow you to invite your team members to help with the creation of your presentation. “To create a team, simply choose those who you would like to collaborate with and once the invitation is accepted you can instantly start creating your presentation together. Play with illustrations, colours, leave comments, and resolve suggestions all within the Canva editor. Teamwork is made easier with Canva’s presentation tool”.

Google Slides is a free to use tool that offers a huge amount of ways to create slide based presentations making it an ideal resource for teachers to use with students. It has its limitations but is a powerful alternative to the likes of Microsoft PowerPoint.

Google Slides is a free and easy-to-use platform for teachers and students that integrates perfectly with Google Classroom, and can be shared anywhere and with anyone. Since it is all online-based, most devices can display Google Slides, even smartphones – making it ideal as a way for teachers to share resources with students.

Another big appeal for Google Slides, aside from being free and readily accessible, is that the layout follows the usual Google format. It's intuitive and especially familiar to anyone with a Gmail account or those who use Google Docs. Create slideshows from scratch or use a whole host of helpful templates to get you started right away with ease.

Collaboration is another big sell here since Google Slides allows multiple teachers to edit the same slideshow. A great way to build something together or share  resources. 

Downsides exist, such as a lack of desktop app. But for a free tool, with more free templates appearing online daily, this is a really superb alternative to the likes of Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple Keynote.

So if Google Slides the ideal slideshow tool for you? Read on the find out everything you need to know.

Google Slides: Features

• Lots of templates
• Simple collaboration

Google Slides at its most basic is a slideshow creation platform. But its potential is what really excites as that is only limited by your imagination within the framework it offers. So while you can start a presentation or slide deck resource from a template, it's possible to edit and personalize these very easily thanks to the intuitive controls.

Of course, this free tool doesn't offer as many transitions or fancy effects as some of the competition, but lots of new resources appear online all the time. For example, templates created by teachers are shared with other educators. This takes us to collaboration.

Google Slides led the way in easy collaboration and the competition is still playing catch-up. Teachers are easily able to share slide decks with students using the link, or directly within Google Classroom. Teachers can also share their slides decks for others to edit, or to make a copy and create their own version. This is a great way to dramatically speed up work creation while also helping grow creative resources. 

Of course collaboration doesn't mean all your work is open to editing. You can control the level of sharing with options such as "View only", "Comment only," and "Edit." This makes it great for sharing with teachers, limiting what you want to let them edit, and also with students, perhaps, on what you want to let them make comments.

Google Slides is media rich, so you can add photos, audio, and video very easily. This can be taken from files on your machine, be that a computer, tablet, or phone, and also from Google Drive. Beyond that, you have YouTube videos at your disposal for easy insertion as well.

Google Slides' intuitive interface is one of the greatest draws as it allows you to make a slideshow quickly but also can dive deeper into personalization and original content creation without needing to invest a lot of time.

Select the big plus icon to create a blank slideshow or select from one of the templates to fill in the pre-made presentation using your own content. Options allow you to add images, audio, and video, and you can also change colors, fonts, and sizing, plus add shapes and boxes. From pie charts to graphs, you can add plenty of data and even import charts that you or a co-teacher may have already created in Google Sheets.

The ease of use extends beyond the tool's creation and sharing abilities though. This is super compatible too, so it can be used to open other file types. Google does the conversion work so you can open the likes of PowerPoint and Keynote presentations right there in your free Slides software. 

Slides also allows you to export different types of files, which is great if you want to make a PDF for super quick and easy sharing.

Collaboration is not only easy to do, with a simple link share, but also works in real time as you can see anyone else in the file editing or reading. So you can see what students are using it, for example, and what they're doing. Or, even more usefully, you can work with teachers, live, constructing a presentation document together without actually being in the same room.

Google Drive and Google Classroom integration are huge factors since, if you use both, Slides becomes the easiest way to offer slide decks to students or co-teachers. It also makes for easy integration of files such as images, audio, and video right there from a shared Google Drive. This is great for educators who want to share resources across devices so new tools can be created.

Should I Use Google Slides?

If you want to create a slideshow or presentation, then Google Slides is a near perfect option. It's free, easy to use, works across devices, lets you import lots of rich media, and is allows simple sharing and collaboration. All that and -- yes we already said it but we're saying it again -- is free. That makes it ideal for use in schools with fewer resources or lack of infrastructure.

If you use Google Classroom or Gmail this is a perfect tool that'll fit into your ecosystem of resources naturally. And since it works on nearly all devices, it makes the resources you create available to nearly all students, no matter where they are.

Maybe you are at a point in your life where you are making a career switch and pivoting to online teaching in order to carve out a new and exciting career path ! 

It’s incredible how many free resources are available online and using the right tools can ensure that your classes run smoothly. 

Although technology glitches at unpredictable moments, you can always limit the chances of this happening by knowing what options you have for teaching your virtual class. 

Whatever your situation is, there will be something here for you to take away and incorporate into your online classes for free!

Types of online teaching tools for teachers

When you are searching for that perfect free tool, you will often find that once the trial ends, that resource comes with a price. 

But if you are on a budget, the following 11 free tools will give you what you need to get started and deliver excellent online classes.

Every online teacher will need software that will allow them to connect with their online students easily and quickly.

Software programs for online teachers need to include video, have the option to share screens and use a whiteboard for instruction and in order to chat with their students.

There are lots of software tools out there, but these rise to the top of the list for quality, stability and ease of use.

Zoom is probably the most popular online software in the market for holding meetings, classes and online get-togethers, especially since the start of the pandemic. 

Zoom offers the following to their users:

• Chat function to chat with your whole class or individual students
• Breakout rooms to separate students into groups for discussions
• Share screen function to share your screen or allow students to share their screen
• A built-in whiteboard with text and drawing features to share with your students.

The free version allows up to 100 participants, unlimited one-on-one meetings but a limit of only 40 minutes for group meetings. 

Zoom is a great option for teachers who need a platform to teach their students since this app is used worldwide and most people are comfortable and familiar with its functions.

Google Meet

Google Meet for teachers is another popular software application for online tutors, virtual teachers and anyone conducting classes online because of its integration with Google’s suite of other apps like Google Classroom and Google Drive.

Google Meet offers the following free options for its users:

• Share screen to your students
• Adjust your layouts
• Group classes up to 1 hour
• Chat with students in the chatbox
• And other normal features of a virtual video conferencing platform

Anyone with a Google account can create a video meeting or virtual class of up to 100 students (participants) and meet up to 60 minutes for free. 

If you are conducting one-on-one tutoring classes, you can spend up to 24 hours together (but why would you?!).

GoToMeeting

GoToMeeting , as stated on their website, puts the “class in online classes.” 

They are an up-and-coming competitor to some of the larger video platforms because of how they gear their functions to suit teachers and students in an online class.

With their free account, you can expect:

• Personal URLs for students to join the class
• Instant messaging, file sharing & screen sharing
• Powerful mobile capabilities for students
• Clean and simple interface with powerful functions

Unfortunately, their free version is quite limiting but it will allow you 40-minute classes/meetings but with only up to 3 participants. 

GoToMeeting free would be perfect for independent tutors who have 1-3 students and classes under 40 minutes.

Free resources to boost engagement in your online lessons

There are tons of free resources online that will help boost the excitement in your online lessons. 

However, the majority of content out there are in the form of PDF worksheets, text-heavy documents and websites built on outdated javascript and HTML.

If you are looking for powerful and interactive resources that let you build lessons that students will love, then look no further than Boom Cards and Nearpod.

Boom Cards are self-checking interactive activities that give students real-time feedback on their responses.

Here’s how they work:

• You create the Boom Cards in advance or use pre-created decks from other teachers
• You use the fast play option (for free) and get a link to send to students
• Your students are shown one question at a time and given real-time feedback on their answer
• They can correct themselves or simply discard the card
• You can also differentiate instruction with Boom Cards and assign certain cards to certain students

You can only use the fast play option with the free version and you will not be able to track progress but you can upgrade at any time under different price packages. 

I love the idea of Boom Cards for a creative way to assess students where they won’t even realize they are learning!

Nearpod allows teachers to make any lesson interactive. Take those boring worksheets and make them fun and engaging. 

Or, pull in videos and other interactive content into your Nearpod lesson.

Let’s check out how it works:

• Jump over to Nearpod and create a free account.
• Browse Nearpod’s thousands of lessons in the Nearpod Library or create your own.
• Once you create your own lesson you just add slides like you would in any presentation software.
• The difference is that instead of just adding text or images (which you still can), nearpod has lots of other fun options like quizzes, polls, and games to make it fun.
• You give your students a code to enter and then you are ready to go!

The difference between Nearpod’s free and paid version is the amount of storage you get and the number of students that can join at one time.

If you are a teacher struggling to stay organized with your students and the many tasks that go into teaching then look no further than apps like Asana and Trello. 

Secret: my favorite is Asana!

Asana is your personal teaching secretary all in one powerful app that gives you control over your tasks, projects and to-do lists.

Essentially, Asana is a productivity management solution for teams, individuals or anyone that needs more control over their tasks.

Teachers will enjoy Asana for a number of reasons. 

Firstly, from a simple angle of gaining control over the multitude of to-do’s and projects that teachers need to manage, this app will do it all.

Some ways that teachers can use Asana in their teaching life can include:

• Creating lesson plan tasks with manageable subtasks that have deadlines
• Managing students’ information, progress and other important details
• Helping with teams of teachers to manage projects that need to be completed
• Create online lesson plans that allow teachers to see what parts of the lesson were and weren’t completed

This app is great for teachers in brick-and-mortar schools as well as online teachers who need to gain control over their schedule by focusing on what matters each day.

Additionally, if you are a teacherpreneur building your own online teaching business, Asana will be your go-to place to make sure that everything in your business is running smoothly.

With the free account, teachers will be able to create projects and tasks through a variety of different layouts.

Trello is another online productivity app that works similar to Asana but has some differences.

Trello is a collaboration tool that lets you organize your projects into boards.

It can tell you what’s being worked on and where your tasks are in terms of the completion process. 

Of course, it also lets you add to-do lists, tasks and other similar features to Asana. 

Quizlet is a free tool that helps teachers create learning activities for students, like flashcards, study material and interactive quiz games.

The amazing thing about Quizlet is that it can really be used at any grade level and any age! Students love the game-based feature of Quizlet and you are helping them get prepared for assessments without even realizing it.

So, let’s take a look at how it works:

• You, as the teacher, create study sets for your students. 
• These study sets can be used as review activities or it can be a quiz game to help students review for a test.
• The student can log in and choose the appropriate study set, either created by the teacher or by others.

That’s it! It’s that easy.

In my opinion, Quizlet is great for students because it allows the teacher to:

• Differentiate instruction with the activities that you create
• Teach collaborative skills because students are working together
• Help prepare students for assessments and tests

Quizlet, while is a great free tool for teachers, does have limitations and should be used as one resource in your classroom among the many others that you have access to.

Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes it really simple for teachers to create and share learning games or quizzes in a matter of minutes with their students. 

Once you create a Kahoot quiz or game, you share a simple access code that lets students log on and join the game. 

Teachers can create their own assessment games or use premade lessons from other teachers in the Kahoot library. 

Here are the steps to making the magic happen in your virtual or online classroom:

• Create – you can design your own kahoot with images and diagrams to make your questions more engaging and to support all learners who are playing
• Play – Once the kahoot is created, teachers share the unique PIN with their students who can join on their own device wherever they are located. It is best played live in a group setting either in a classroom or a virtual classroom. However, teachers can also send challenges that players complete at their own pace (ie: homework or remote learning)
• Share – Kahoots can be shared with the broader Kahoot community which lets others access your Kahoots

As teachers, we are always needing to create things for our students and it can be difficult to find free tools that let us create quality content to use in our classrooms.  

Look no further than Canva and Google Slides to make great resources for our classrooms.

Canva is amazing! It is a free tool, although there are premium features you can pay for that lets you create just about anything for your classroom.

You can create and design all types of content within Canva using their free account that looks professional and can be used with your students in your virtual classroom, or brick-and-mortar classroom.

Think of Canva as your easy-to-use plug-and-play design assistant. 

Do you need a presentation? Do you need a cover slide for something?

Presentations usually give a deeper insight to what the topic is. It’s not surprising that a short outline with a picture gives a better understanding of the topic. Over many years the best formula for creating presentations remains unchanged: visuality + original content. Being a true follower of Canvas and Unplag, I cannot but say about the high quality of these tools. With them, I improved my time-managing skills and also upgraded my creative mind. Canva is on the top of all the tools for creating beautiful design: colours, prints, patterns – everything is captivating. What I do about Unplag is its speed and accuracy. In a second it identifies academic lapses such as wrong formatted citations or references. It’s more than cool.

First off I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing. I’ve had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out. I do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. 6 Productivity Tools Every Teacher Should Know About

Educators say these tools can drastically reduce administrative and planning burdens, freeing up time for engaging with students.

It’s no secret that a teacher’s day is filled with a multitude of tasks, many of which are completed outside of school hours. Research shows , in fact, that the average teacher puts in nearly 11 hours of work each day—three more than they’re paid for—once you factor in time spent on lesson planning, completing administrative tasks, emailing, and analyzing and documenting students’ academic performance.

Tools that can save teachers time on some of these tasks are of the utmost importance, and with recent advances in AI, a hoard of new options have appeared that promise to do just that. But determining which of these tools are truly useful is another time-consuming task—which is why we asked our audience of educators what tools they find most useful these days for increasing their productivity.

They pointed us to a handful that help them more easily do things like plan lessons, create assessments, manage some administrative tasks, and improve their efficiency in communicating with students and families.

Rather than point you to the popular tools that many of you are likely familiar with by now—ChatGPT and Canvas, for example—we’ve focused on curating a list of tools you may not have heard of, or haven’t yet tried, and we’ll share teachers’ input on how they can be used to save you valuable time and effort.

MagicSchool

MagicSchool.ai was developed by teachers, and according to educator Tiffany Sutter , it’s “a teacher’s best friend.” Sutter says she uses MagicSchool to “create lesson plans and questions for passages, differentiate texts, write letters of recommendation, identify accommodations for students, design math and reading work, and summarize YouTube videos.”

The tool can generate text outputs for almost any purpose or need, including emails to parents, worksheets, multiple choice questions, custom thank-you notes, and gift ideas.

High school social studies teacher Kristen Starnes told Edutopia that she often uses MagicSchool to create high-quality text from a prompt. For example, in an 11th-grade world history class, she will ask it to write a specific number of pages on a topic as broad as “British imperialism in India, including the concept of nonviolent resistance, replete with relevant literature from both British and Indian authors.” 

While the text won’t be perfect—it must be vetted for accuracy, as with all AI-generated text—Starnes said the output buys her time she would have spent researching on her own, and is generally a useful starting point to help her introduce difficult, broad concepts to students quickly.

Diffit 

If you’re on the hunt for a tool to help you solely with differentiation, Diffit may be just the thing.  Educator Michele Haiken calls Diffit an ideal tool to enable “all students—regardless of reading level—to access grade level concepts, while providing curriculum-aligned reading practice in students’ zone of proximal development.” 

Diffit can take writing from various formats—pdfs, slides, Word or Google docs, or even transcripts from YouTube videos—and parse and distill the text into simpler or more complex language, depending on your students’ needs.

In addition to differentiating reading for students in various grade levels, or for varying reading levels within one classroom, Diffit can also produce summaries, vocabulary lists, and questions from the text, as well as translate the text into different languages.

Many teachers say they use the app to generate assessments based on the text it creates—both multiple choice and open-ended questions—that can be tweaked as needed.

Curipod helps teachers create scaled, interactive lessons complete with presentations, background information, images, polls, word clouds, exit tickets, and more.

What makes the tool stand out, however, is the automated feedback it can provide to students on the assessments they complete on the platform—feedback that high school science teacher Bonnie Nieves says is accurate, helps kids learn from their mistakes promptly, and frees her up “to be able to pull the kids aside that are not doing well and be able to support them myself.”

Nieves told Edutopia that when she asked Curipod to create a lesson on one of her most difficult subjects, gene editing in biotechnology, the output wasn’t perfect but did draw from a wide body of knowledge—effectively conducting the sort of research and planning that would have taken her hours to do on her own.

Middle school math teacher Shanna Martin says she finds Curipod useful for the interactive presentations it can easily whip up, but what sets those presentations apart are the various types of questions—from open-ended, to drawing based, to multiple choice—that the tool will weave into presentations.

“This variety ensures that students are actively engaged and can demonstrate their understanding in different ways,” Martin said.

This Chrome extension can help you quickly elevate feedback to students, making it more interactive and relevant.

Kami allows teachers to annotate various file types—pdfs, scanned documents, images, and more—with comments, drawings, and audio and visual comments. Educator Lexi Rose says she uses Kami daily . “It’s great for annotating documents/pdfs from Google Drive on your SmartBoard,” she writes, adding that her older students also use it to complete worksheets quickly and take notes.

This helps Rose quickly provide personalized feedback on student assignments, including audio and video feedback that might give students more clarity than simple written comments. The tool is a two-way street, too, as students can interact with the feedback they receive in the form of drawings, written responses, and audio and video comments. Kami can also be used to digitize worksheets, exams, and any other printed material teachers might normally distribute to or collect from students—which can save tons of time at the printer each morning and reduce the amount of clutter in the classroom. Digitizing these workflows can also help streamline grading, as you can use Kami to quickly grade assignments, leave feedback, and return them to students online.

Educator Stephanie Rothstein says Kami’s collaborative learning and whiteboard tools make it a great replacement for Google Jamboard, which the company has announced will be shut down later this year. According to Rothstein, Kami offers security options that allow teachers to turn off particular features for students. “Students can add annotations and can only alter their own text,” Rothstein said—the security options prevent students from moving or deleting the work of other students.

Classroomscreen

To create an easier classroom management experience, many educators turn to the web-based app Classroomscreen , which is full of interactive and customizable widgets such as timers, clocks, group randomizers, polls, classroom noise level monitors, and more. Educator Caitlin Grisham calls the app “indispensable,” while Mike Bettes says he’s found the various widgets “super handy” for cutting down on administrative tasks and providing him more time for teaching.

The timers and stopwatches are useful for keeping students on task, keeping track of timed activities, and pacing lessons and classroom transitions. 

The randomizing functionality, meanwhile, saves time when it comes to doing things like forming groups, choosing students to answer questions, or deciding what order students present information to the class—while keeping decision making objective and fair. 

Text Blaze 

This Chrome extension can help teachers more efficiently communicate with students, parents, and others by letting them easily grab “snippets” of frequently used text that can be inserted into any text field with a simple shortcut. High school English teacher D.J. Conger says that the tool saves her “so much time entering oft repeated messages.”

According to educators, Text Blaze comes in handy for comments on student work related to common errors—comments that are often written over and over during the grading process. (Watch this video to get a sense of what this looks like in real time.) The tool is also useful for communications with parents or students over email, in which teachers may receive similar questions and find themselves spending time writing out the same response over and over.

Templates that teachers develop can also include placeholders for customization, which educator Med Kharbach writes helps ensure that teachers can “maintain a personal touch in their communications without the time-consuming process of typing out each message from scratch.” Reducing the time spent on administrative tasks like these can help teachers “free up more time for meaningful educational activities,” Kharbach added.
