Artist in Residence 2023/24: Lisa Batiashvili

lisa batiashvili biography

Lisa Batiashvili is the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Artist in Residence for the 2023-24 season. In our interview, she talks about her long-standing friendship with the orchestra.

What’s so striking about your violin playing is its expressive intensity and wealth of colours. What are you striving for in creating your sound?

I think of my tone like a voice. Many musicians are of the opinion that beauty of sound is less important than expression. You need that as well. But for me the violin’s sound – like the human voice – reflects the soul of the person making the music. The sound has a lot to do with my own emotions. I want it to encourage a kind of soul-searching in other people and reflection on their own feelings.

This season you’re the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Artist in Residence. How do you view this collaboration?

It’s the fulfilment of a dream for me! This residency is the continuation of a long friendship with the orchestra. It gives me the opportunity, not just for solo appearances in orchestral concerts, but also for realizing chamber projects with the musicians. And I’m greatly looking forward to working with chief conductor Kirill Petrenko for the first time.

You were in your mid-20s when you made your debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Since then you’ve appeared here regularly. What has been your experience of the orchestra?

This orchestra already had an influence on me as a small child. I grew up in the former Soviet Union with recordings of the Berliner Philharmoniker that made a deep impression on me. I longed to appear some day with this orchestra. That seemed a completely unrealistic wish at the time, but then it came true! For me as an artist, it’s a celebration every time I get together with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

During your residency we can hear you in two violin concertos: the Brahms and Szymanowski’s First. The latter isn’t so familiar to us here. What is it about this work that makes it so special for you?

The Szymanowski concerto has an incredible power and a seductive sensibility and sensuality. He wrote it in collaboration with the violinist Paul Kochanski, with whom Szymanowski was apparently in love. I consider the concerto a declaration of love – the expression of feelings that could not be lived out at that time. But they are present in the music and produce a quite special mood.

The Brahms concerto is part of the standard repertoire and has accompanied you throughout your career. How do you keep your curiosity about it alive?

Of course, I’ve played the Brahms concerto often – but never before with the Berliner Philharmoniker. As with all masterpieces, one can discover something new in every performance. That will also be the case when collaborating with the Berliner Philharmoniker. There’s such a great Brahms tradition here, and that comes out in a warm, dark sound and precise articulation. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the orchestra’s Brahms sound.

You’ll be appearing in a chamber-music programme with the composer and clarinettist Jörg Widmann. What do you admire most about him and his music?

Jörg Widmann and I are old friends. He’s a fantastic clarinettist and a wonderful composer. His music is incredibly varied, yet it has its own unmistakable tonal language. We want to show that contemporary music isn’t always atonal and complicated but can also be accessible and emotional. In our concert we’ll also be introducing Tsotne Zedginidze, a 13-year-old pianist and composer from Georgia. He’s an exceptional talent.

Tsotne Zedginidze is being sponsored by the Lisa Batiashvili Foundation, which you’ve founded to support Georgian artists. What are you aiming to achieve with it?

I want to give something back to my homeland, Georgia, which I left when I was twelve. There are young artists there who have moved me so deeply with their talent that I’d like to support them on their journey. The new generation has such an incredible range of talent and such a great significance for our future in classical music. These young musicians can already do so much at such an early stage, and that’s something I want to encourage. Georgia is a highly developed country artistically, and it has many great artists to offer. To make them as well-known and visible as possible through culture and music, that’s one of the best things we Georgians can do to help our small country.

This season the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Europakonzert will also take place in Georgia, with you as soloist. What does this appearance mean for you?

I believe this concert will be the highlight of my life! I am overjoyed that the people of Georgia will be given the opportunity to hear such a great orchestra, so steeped in tradition, performing live in their country. Of course, this concert also has a political significance. Georgia has been fighting for many years to be a part of the European family. Culturally it has long been part of Europe. This concert should make that clear. For Georgia this will presumably be one of the most important cultural moments ever: for the first time such a great orchestra is coming, one of the best in the entire world. That is naturally a big assignment for us. We’re working with a very special team in Georgia, which, despite the challenges, shares this opinion with me: that the Berliner Philharmoniker absolutely must come to Georgia for both cultural and political reasons.

What are you looking forward to most in this residency?

First of all, I’m looking forward to being in Berlin for a longer time and to benefit from the many different things this city has to offer. I’m looking forward to various projects with the Berliner Philharmoniker, people I’ve already made music and been friends with for a long time. It really is like a musical family. Then I’m looking forward to the varied repertoire and to my first collaboration with Kirill Petrenko. And, as I mentioned, up-and-coming musicians are very important to me, so I’m also specially looking forward to my first encounter with the Karajan Academy.

Praised by audiences and fellow musicians for her virtuosity and “profound sensitivity” (Financial Times), Lisa Batiashvili is one of the world’s most sought-after violinists. In Europe she frequently works with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Staatskapelle Dresden, Staatskapelle Berlin, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the major London orchestras. In the US, she performs every season with the New York Philharmonic and regularly returns to the other top orchestras.

Highlights in Lisa's 2013/14 season include a tour to Asia with the New York Philharmonic under Alan Gilbert and a European tour with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (Yannick Nézet-Séguin). She also performs with The Philadelphia Orchestra (Nézet-Séguin), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (David Zinman), and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (Tugan Sokhiev), and appears with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Vladimir Jurowski), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Mariss Jansons) and the Philharmonia Orchestra (Esa-Pekka Salonen). She continues her collaboration with pianist Paul Lewis in a series of recitals in Paris, Brussels and Hamburg, and presents a new Bach ensemble project with oboist François Leleux.

During the 2012/13 season Lisa held the position of Capell-Virtuosin with Staatskapelle Dresden, performing a wide range of concerts, including on a North American tour, with its Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann. She was also Artist in Residence with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, and appeared with Staatskapelle Berlin and Daniel Barenboim at their annual outdoor concert in front of an audience of 38,000.

Lisa records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon. Her latest album – featuring the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Christian Thielemann and Clara Schumann’s Three Romances for violin and piano with pianist Alice Sara Ott – was released in January 2013. In 2011, she received an ECHO Klassik for her debut album on the label, “Echoes of Time,” which includes Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

A dedicated chamber musician, Lisa has appeared at the Salzburg, Edinburgh International, Schleswig-Holstein, Heimbach and Verbier festivals, and tours regularly with musicians such as oboist François Leleux, violist Lawrence Power and cellist Sebastian Klinger. Lisa's commitment to new music has seen her give several world premieres in recent seasons, including of Magnus Lindberg’s Violin Concerto.

Lisa gained international recognition at age 16 as the youngest-ever competitor in the Sibelius Competition, where she took second prize. She was named winner of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival's 2003 Leonard Bernstein Award and was awarded the Beethoven Ring Prize from the Beethoven Festival Bonn. In 2008 she was honoured with the MIDEM Classical Award, the Choc de L'année and the ECHO Klassik for her Sony recording of Sibelius’ and Lindberg’s violin concertos. TIME IN with Lisa Batiashvili: Life in Europe, Cooking with Family, Chamber Music with Friends

lisa batiashvili biography

Georgian-born violinist Lisa Batiashvili is usually on the move, soloing with orchestras around the world. But since March she’s has been at home with her family in Germany and France. In this TIME IN interview, she talks about the pleasures of re-creating family recipes for her husband and children, playing chamber music with friends, and finding time for yoga and meditation amongst other things.

Growing up with her father, a violinist, and her mother, a pianist, Lisa was surrounded by music in her native country of Georgia, and in Germany where her family moved when she was 12. Lisa began playing violin at 4; at 16, she participated in the Sibelius Competition, an experience that launched her musical career.

lisa batiashvili biography

Named Musical America’s 2015 Instrumentalist of the Year, she’s earned many other honors, including ECHO Klassik awards, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival’s Leonard Bernstein award. She appears with major orchestras and has been artist-in-residence at the New York Philharmonic, the NDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others. She is also artistic director of Audi Sommerkonzerte, Ingolstadt from 2019-2021.

In the months since the shutdown, Lisa has enjoyed spending time with her husband, oboist Francois Leleux, her two children, ages 12 and 16, and her cuddly dog Cookie, who she says, “appreciated it a lot to have mommy and daddy and sister and brother all the time around!”

lisa batiashvili biography

She also found herself connecting with the past, passing on traditions, particularly in the kitchen!

Lisa spoke with me in July 2020 from her leafy backyard in France, where she and the family were spending part of the summer. Things were beginning to open up in parts of Europe, but her schedule of concerts with many orchestras world-wide was still on hold.  Here are edited excerpts from out conversation :

Susan Lewis: How have you been doing during this period when so many things have been shut down?

Lisa Batiashvili: Well, we've been a little bit more lucky here in Europe, especially in Germany. The lockdown was not as long and not as painful as in other places. The beginning was quite scary, but at the same time, also important to understand that now we have to change our way of thinking.

For me, I always think that when things like this happen ... you have to just stop and enjoy the moment you are having with the people you love.

During the shutdown, I spent a lot of time with my family, of course. We cooked a lot!

We always cooked, but when we were all at home we cooked even more complicated dishes, which took a lot of time. We did a very special Easter cake, in April, which took eight hours. It was very nice, and we ate it for two weeks!

lisa batiashvili biography

And it was really a nice experience because it takes me back to my childhood when I was very young. My mom and my grandma would bake it and it would smell like cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla through the whole night! And in the morning, the cakes were ready. It was a very beautiful ritual in  my childhood, so I could finally give it to my children because it was the first time I made it myself.

Susan Lewis: Has there been any particular music that you've turned to? Particular movies that you've watched? I know you also love movies!

Lisa Batiashvili: We watched a lot of movies, yes! I watched old movies again, a lot of French films with Louis de Funes, for example. I'm also watching Charlie Chaplin again, going back to the beginning of the 20th century. And the music, I would say, I had opportunities to perform more chamber music in the last couple of weeks and months.

Here, Lisa and colleagues Lawrence Power (viola), Sebastian Klinger (cello), Matthew McDonald (double bass), and Nino Gvetadze (piano) play fragments from Schubert's Trout Quintet in a concert at Schloss Elmau, in Bavaria, Germany on July 22, 2020:

Usually [during her pre-pandemic schedule], between the concerts with orchestras—there is a bit less time. It’s a really good feeling to be able to invest more time with the chamber music; also to rehearse with the groups in a different way. When everybody's so busy, you barely have enough rehearsals when you bring together different people and you make a chamber music concert.

But now, I had a couple of experiences with proper rehearsal time with people who had no stress. And it just felt very good; it's more rewarding to play together when you have the time to work on things together.

Susan Lewis: Is there anything that you've discovered that you would like to continue after things open up fully again?

lisa batiashvili biography

Lisa Batiashvili: Yes. I personally get easily stressed by everything I have to do on Monday, whether it's to do with my family, the children, the work, the practice, everything outside. What I discovered during this time was that I have to actually give myself more time for things and not worry about not doing everything in the same minute.

So, I've been actually meditating every morning, at least for 10 or 15 minutes and doing some yoga; somehow it became such a habit. I know that many people do that, but for me personally, now it's a new way to start the day by giving myself the freedom and the calmness to not worry about everything that we have to do in one day, but just to take it step-by-step and also enjoy everything that I'm doing in that moment. I really think that the time of the lockdown was the perfect time to learn all of those things.

Thoughts about the future?

Lisa Batiashvili: Step by step, now, Germany is reopening borders again and reopening concert halls. There is a lot of positive energy coming from musicians, and the orchestras who want to become active as much as possible. ... And it's very important for everyone to understand that the culture and music are even more important than ever before. People need to have this contact with the music, because the music does have a healing power.

Here's Lisa on stage in early July at Audi Sommerkonzerte 2020, where she is artistic director. She performs The Lark , arranged by Stephan Koncz, with the Camerata Salzburg and her husband, Francois Leleux conducting .

The Lark is also featured in Lisa's recent album, City Lights, representing the city of Bucharest.

Batiashavili became artist-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic for the 2014/15 season, and with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for the 2017/18 season. In parallel, she has an artist residency with the NDR Symphony Orchestra.

Her commercial recordings include Magnus Lindberg's Violin Concerto No. 1 as part of her recording contract with Sony Classical, which she signed in 2007. And more recently, she has recorded several albums with Deutsche Grammophon, including in 2016, a much acclaimed album of the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius Violin Concertos and in 2017, an album of Prokofiev's works including his Violin Concertos 1 and 2.

Magnus Lindberg dedicated a violin concerto to her, which she gave its world premiere at Avery Fisher Hall, New York, on August 22, 2006 and European premiere in Sweden in October. Batiashvili and her husband, oboist François Leleux, commissioned from the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli the double concerto Broken Chant, which they premiered in February 2008 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. She also commissioned a solo violin encore from her compatriot Igor Loboda for solo violin, "Requiem for Ukraine", which was meant to be a statement against conductor Valery Gergiev's cozy relationship with the regime of Vladimir Putin.

Batiashvili was one of the first of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, from 1999 to 2001. She has collaborated in chamber music and concerto performances with cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne , both BBC New Generation Artists exactly contemporary with Batiashvili. She has also worked with a later BBC New Generation Artist, Ashley Wass, in recital. She made her BBC Proms debut in 2000.

In 1995, aged 16, she placed 2nd at the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki.

Lisa Batiashvili was born in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, to a violinist father and a pianist mother. She began learning violin with her father from age four. The family left Georgia in 1991 when she was 12 years old, and settled in Germany. She later studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Mark Lubotsky, her teacher in Hamburg, had been a student of David Oistrakh , for whom Shostakovich wrote his violin concertos. Later, Lisa Batiashvili also studied with Ana Chumachenco.

Elisabeth Batiashvili (Georgian: ელისაბედ ბათიაშვილი ; born 7 March 1979), professionally known as Lisa Batiashvili, is a prominent Georgian violinist active across Europe and the United States. A former New York Philharmonic artist-in-residence, she is acclaimed for her "natural elegance, silky sound and the meticulous grace of her articulation."
