Masters scholarships for international students in Australia

Australia’s popularity as a study abroad destination is helped by the fact that there are several kinds of fully-funded postgraduate scholarship on offer for international students. These range from government programmes and charity schemes to scholarships offered by the universities themselves.

Australia Awards

Destination australia, research training program (rtp) scholarships, australian-american fulbright commission scholarships, the northcote postgraduate scholarship.

  • Postgraduate scholarships at Australian universities

The Australia Awards are a flagship international scholarship scheme funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). They offer a fully-funded scholarship package to international students from developing countries in Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific region.

Australia Awards Scholarships fund international Masters students to study in Australia. Recipients are expected to return to their home country and work for at least two years following the completion of their degree.

You can study a Masters at any Australian university , but your course must be related to one of the priority areas decided on by your home country .

Applications to the Australia Awards Scholarships scheme can be made via the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS) or via post. The application period is usually between February and May (you can see the full list of deadlines on the DFAT website ).

As you’d expect, applying for an Australia Awards Scholarship is a competitive process. The precise requirements differ from country to country, but you’ll normally need to supply copies of the following documents during the application:

  • Birth certificate
  • Bachelors degree certificate
  • Academic transcripts
  • Personal statement of 500 words describing why you should receive the award
  • Academic and professional references
  • Passport size photo
  • Proof of English language proficiency (usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.5)

You’ll also need to provide a reintegration plan detailing how you intend to use the experiences and knowledge you gain in Australia upon your return to your home country.

Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to an interview , where you’ll be expected to speak to a panel about your country’s priority areas, your proposed Masters programme and your reintegration plan.

Successful scholars will receive:

  • A full tuition fee waiver
  • Travel expenses in the form of a return flight to Australia
  • An initial establishment grant of AUD $5,000 (USD $3,200)
  • A fortnightly maintenance stipend (approximately AUD $34,500 per year – USD $22,630)

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

  • Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)
  • Other sundry expenses

After you’ve completed the Masters scholarship in Australia, you’ll need to return to your home country for a minimum of two years – and put your new qualification into practice!

Funded by the Australian Department of Education, the Destination Australia scholarship programme gives Masters students (both international and domestic) the chance to study in regional Australia (outside of the country’s major cities).

The Department of Education maintains a list of the regional Australian universities and campuses where these scholarships are available.

The scholarships are worth AUD $15,000 (USD $9,600) per year for the duration of your course.

The application process varies according to your prospective university. Some institutions will automatically consider you for a Destination Australia scholarship, while others will require you to submit a short personal statement explaining why you have chosen to study in regional Australia. The deadline is usually mid-January for a Masters programme that starts in February.

Each year the Australian Government funds talented postgraduate research students – both domestic and international – through Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships.

This funding is allocated to Australian universities , who then use it to support students enrolling on research Masters courses and PhDs (known as higher degrees by research – HDR).

These are the kinds of RTP scholarship that are offered by universities:

  • RTP Fees Offset – this covers your tuition fees
  • RTP Stipend – this is a tax-free, fortnightly sum to cover your living costs
  • RTP Allowance – this is intended to cover sundry expenses associated with your degree, such as health cover and thesis printing

Depending on the university and the course, you may receive one or a combination of the above funding elements. International students usually receive the tuition fee waiver in addition to the stipend.

The exact amount of the RTP Stipend varies from institution to institution, but you should expect it to be somewhere in the region of AUD $32,200 per year (USD $21,120).

The application process also differs according to the university (you should always apply directly to your prospective university, rather than the Australian Government). When applying for an eligible research Masters, you’ll usually need to indicate that you’d like to be considered for a scholarship.

The university will then assess your RTP scholarship application based on a series of criteria (academic background, research proposal, professional experience, publications and more) before making a decision.

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers postgraduate scholarships to help American students study a Masters at an Australian universities. This support includes:

  • A monthly stipend for up to 10 months
  • Travel expenses
  • Healthcare insurance
  • Networking opportunities through Fulbright Alumni

American students are also eligible for Fulbright Future Scholarships to study a Masters in Australia.

To encourage UK students to study in Australia, as well as government and university funding options, there is also the The Northcote Postgraduate Scholarship which is awarded by the Northcote Trust, and administered on the Trust's behalf by the Britain-Australia Society.

University scholarships

Australian universities are keen to recruit promising international postgraduates (like you!) and many will offer their own funding for overseas Masters students.

A good way to see what’s available is find a Masters at an Australian university that interests you, then get in touch with the institution to see what funding there is.

You could also go directly to the international postgraduate scholarship section on a university website. We’ve done a little bit of the legwork for you on that front – below you can find a list of links to scholarships at a selection of Australia’s top universities :

  • University of Melbourne
  • Australian National University
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Queensland
  • UNSW Sydney
  • Monash University
  • University of Adelaide
  • University of Western Australia
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • University of Canberra

You’ll find that the nature of the scholarships varies greatly. Some will grant you a partial tuition fee waiver, while others will cover your fees and provide a regular stipend during your Masters.

Masters fees for international students in Australia

One of the reasons for the number of scholarships on offer for international postgraduates is that tuition fees in Australia are usually higher for non-domestic students.

If you are not an Australian citizen , a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia , you will usually be classed as an international student.

International fee estimates

The Australian Government currently estimates the cost of fees for international Masters students at between AUD $22,000-50,000 per year (USD $14,430-32,800).

Some programmes may be more expensive than this, particularly in subjects such as Medicine and related disciplines. MBA courses are also likely to incur higher fees than other taught Masters degrees.

Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) for international students

International postgraduates can also be charged SSAF, up to the current maximum of AUD $351 (USD $230) per year. This covers additional costs associated with your Masters degree, but not directly related to its tuition.

You will need to have adequate health insurance during your time studying a Masters in Australia. International students usually receive this by purchasing Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from a suitable insurer.

Different OSHC products provide different levels of cover. You can take out a cheap basic policy that satisfies your legal obligations as an international student, or purchase more extensive cover according to your needs. The average cost for a minimum coverage policy is around AUD $478 (USD $327).

Some scholarships – including Australia Awards and Research Training Programs – include OSHC in their benefits for international students.

The Australian Department of Health provides more information about OSHC cover .

Masters funding for Australian students

Financial support for Australian students is available in several forms, from both public and private sources.

Note that international students are not usually eligible for the same government finance as Australian citizens.

Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP)

The Australian government provides support to domestic students through a national loans system. This support is referred to as the Higher Education Loan Programme, or ‘HELP’ – a pretty appropriate acronym!

HELP loans are normally only available to Australian citizens, or students with permanent humanitarian visas. This usually excludes students from New Zealand or those with other forms of visa, but there may be some exceptions for New Zealand nationals who are Special Category Visa holders and meet certain long-term residency requirements .

You can receive five different forms of ‘HELP’ for your Masters degree:

  • FEE-HELP loans help cover the cost of your tuition fees.
  • VET student loans are similar to FEE-HELP, but are provided to cover tuition on vocational education and training (VET) qualifications. These include some postgraduate courses, such as graduate certificates and graduate diplomas.
  • HECS-HELP support is only available to students on Commonwealth supported places . It provides a loan to cover your student contribution fee (the amount of tuition you pay for after your Commonwealth support is taken into account).
  • OS-HELP loans are intended for Commonwealth supported students studying part of their course overseas. In order to be eligible for an OS-HELP loan your Masters must be awarded by your ‘home’ institution in Australia. You cannot use an OS-HELP loan to pay for an entire Masters abroad.
  • SA-HELP loans are available to assist with the cost of your Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). Eligibility for SA-HELP loans is partly based on your tax status. You will need to submit your Tax File Number (TFN) as part of your application.

HELP combined loan limit

As of 2024, there’s a loan limit of AUD $121,844 for HELP loans. This amount is increased to AUD $174,998 for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Sciences and some Aviation students.

Most HELP loans including HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans are included in the loan limit. However, the SA-HELP and OS-HELP are not.

The actual amount of loan you can take depends on your HELP balance. Any previous loans will reduce the balance you have. You can check how much balance you have using the Australian Government's tool .

HELP application deadlines

The census date is the last date you can apply for a HELP loan. Universities are free to set their own census dates so we recommend you check with your institution to know how much time you have.

Some universities may have an 'administrative date' in which case you'll have to apply for the loan before this date. If you miss the administration date, you'll still have time till the later census date but you may have to pay an extra late fee.

HELP repayments

Any HELP debt you incur as a Masters student in Australia will be combined into one sum, managed by the Australian Taxation Office.

Repayments are made on an income-contingent basis, above a specific threshold (currently AUD $48,361) and deducted through the Australian taxation system. The exact rate at which you repay will depend on how much you earn each year. At present, rates rise at roughly 0.5% per additional AUD $4,000 of income.

You can find more information about different HELP schemes (including repayment rates) on the Australian government’s Study Assist website .

Commonwealth supported places (CSP)

Domestic students (as well as permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand) may be able to receive Commonwealth support for a taught Masters (or ‘Masters by coursework’) in Australia. Commonwealth supported places are partially subsidised by the Australian government, which pays money directly to universities to reduce tuition fees.

Masters fees for Commonwealth supported students are much lower than those for other ‘full-fee’ students. Instead of paying the entire cost of your programme you will pay a smaller ‘student contribution fee’. This could be between AUD $4,445 and $16,325 , though the actual cost will depend on the units you study and the grade bands they fall into. Find out more about Commonwealth supported postgraduate places .

Indigenous Student Success Program

The Indigenous Student Success Program supports indigenous Australians in higher education. You can apply for this funding if you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student and can demonstrate a need for financial support.

Universities are encouraged to design their own scholarships and support using this funding, so check with your institution for the exact details and application process.

Fees and costs

Domestic students, study now, pay later with a help loan.

Everyone should have the opportunity to go to uni.

That’s why, whether you’re studying an undergraduate or postgraduate course, a HELP loan can make your studies possible.

These loans mean if you’re an eligible domestic student, you may be able have all or part of your course subsidised by the Australian Government. There are a few different loan options, but the most common are called HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP.

You don’t have to worry about paying them back until you’re earning above a repayment threshold – after which your loans are paid back through the tax system.

To apply for a HELP loan, you need to submit an application. You will receive instructions on how to do that after you accept your course offer. Find out more at When to pay your fees .

The Government pays your HELP loan fees directly to us, and you only need to start paying them back to the Government when you earn a certain amount. For more information, head to Australian Government StudyAssist .

What fees to pay

Tuition fees.

Each semester, you pay for whatever units you enrol in as part of your course. Available units and their fees are listed on your course page.

If you’re studying a Commonwealth Supported Place course, the government will pay for some of your course. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to get a HELP loan and defer paying the remainder.

If you’re studying a full fee-paying course, you’ll need to pay the entire fee. However, depending on our circumstances, you can defer this payment with a HELP loan.

Pay less with a Commonwealth Supported Place

A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) means that the Government pays part of your fees. It's a subsidy, not a loan, so you don't have to worry about paying it back.

Commonwealth Supported Places can be available for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The Fees and Scholarships section of each course page will tell you if the course is eligible for CSP.

The remaining balance is called your 'student contribution amount'. While you have to pay this amount at some stage, you might be eligible to defer it with a HELP loan from the Government.

Master's courses and student payments

Please note that only certain coursework master's degrees are approved by the Department of Social Services (DoSS) to allow students to access Centrelink payments such as Youth Allowance and Austudy. These are fully accredited and professionally-oriented courses, which are reviewed and updated by the Department once a year and listed on the Department of Social Services website .

New courses that have provisional accreditation, typically because students must graduate from a course before full accreditation is granted, are not eligible for student payments. Please contact us if you have any questions about the eligibility of your study option for student payments.

Other fees you may need to pay

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory fee that covers non-academic services. These services include employment and career advice, financial advice, childcare, food services and sporting and recreational activities.

You can get a SA-HELP loan to cover your SSAF, which means you don't have to pay upfront. SSAF is built into full fee paying courses for eligible domestic students. This means you won't have to pay your SSAF separately. Find out more at What is SSAF and do I have to pay it?

If you want to study some of your course overseas in a learning abroad program, a range of expenses such as airfares, accommodation, and other travel or study expenses might be involved. OS-HELP is a loan for domestic students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) that can help pay for some of these expenses. Find out more at What is OS-HELP?

  • Other course costs vary depending on what you study. Please check your course page or speak to your school or college to learn more. If you'd like to know more about these fees, and other living costs, go to Are there fees, besides tuition, that I need to pay?

When to pay your fees

Payments are due 14 days before the census date of each semester. Census dates are the last day you can withdraw from a unit without financial penalty. It's also the date you'll need to apply for a HELP loan by, or accept an offer in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP). Census dates are important to your enrolment, so make sure you check the census date each semester.

Usually, you pay per semester for the units you undertake. To avoid being sanctioned , it's important that you pay your fees on time. Sanctions include not being able to view your results, or possibly graduating.

Some courses offer fee waivers , which means you may not have to pay anything. If you're awarded a scholarship, this will be paid directly to you at different intervals, such as at the start of semester. Learn more about scholarships for domestic students .

To avoid having your enrolment cancelled:

  • Make sure you submit all the required documentation to pay your fees by the due date.
  • If you're a CSP student, you must submit a Commonwealth Assistance Form (CAF or eCAF) or provide a Tax File Number.

How to pay your fees

Once you've been offered a place, you'll have access to the Student Portal. This is where you'll find everything about enrolment and fees. You'll find nearly everything fees-related, including information on applying for Commonwealth Assistance, creating invoices, making payments and checking sanctions.

  • Find out more about payment methods at How do I pay my fees?

International students

To view your international course fees, please follow these steps:

  • Use the course search to find your course.
  • Look for “fees” at near the bottom of the page under the heading 'Fees and Scholarships'.

Tuition fees stated on this website are quoted in Australian dollars (AUD$), listed as annual fees and are only an indicative course cost .

  • If you are studying a three-year degree, the approximate cost of your entire course will be 3 x Fees (plus yearly indexation). A one-and-a-half year degree would cost roughly 1.5 x Fees, and so forth.
  • Semester fees may vary depending on your actual study load (credit point load) each semester.
  • Note that international fees differ to those for domestic students due to government subsidies, so it is important to check that you are viewing the international amounts.
  • Annual fees vary from course to course and do not include the costs of textbooks, health insurance or living expenses such as food, accommodation, transport and medical costs.
  • Fees are Consumer Price Indexed (CPI) which means tuition fees will increase annually. The amount of indexation to be applied to course fees is determined on an annual basis with total course tuition fees being comprised of projected annual fee rates, which may be subject to change.
  • For example, students who commence their degree in semester 1 (February) will pay the 2021 annual fee. For students who commence their degree in semester 2 (July) will pay the 2021 annual fee rate for their first semester of study and as their second semester will commence in 2022 the tuition fee will be based on the indicative 2022 annual fee rate. For units studied in 2022, the 2022 fee rate will apply.
  • SSAF is built into full fee paying courses for international students. This means you won't have to pay your SSAF separately. Find out more at What is SSAF and do I have to pay it?
  • If you want to study some of your course overseas in a learning abroad program, a range of expenses such as airfares, accommodation, and other travel or study expenses might be involved.
  • Payments are due 14 days before the census date of each semester. Census dates are the last day you can withdraw from a unit without financial penalty. Census dates are important to your enrolment, so make sure you check the census date each semester.

  • If you're awarded a scholarship, this will be paid directly to you at different intervals, such as at the start of semester. Learn more about  international scholarships . You are also eligible to apply for a domestic scholarship if: you've successfully completed a 100% enrolment load in any study period with us in an undergraduate or postgraduate course, or you're completing years 11 and 12 onshore in Australia.
  • In some circumstances, international students can apply for a payment plan for their tuition fees. However, commencing students are not able to accept an offer with a payment plan.
  • To avoid having your enrolment cancelled make sure you submit all the required documentation to pay your fees by the due date.
  • Fee payments are made online directly to the University via the Convera, not to any third parties such as agents.
  • Once you've been offered a place, you'll have access to the Student Portal. This is where you'll find everything about enrolment and fees. You'll find nearly everything fees-related, including information on, creating invoices, making payments and checking sanctions.

Domestic candidates do not pay tuition fees for research degrees at the University of Tasmania. International candidates pay a flat annual fee.

M.S. HR Management Courses

Program consists of 10 courses

At WGU, we design our curriculum to be timely, relevant, and practical—all to help you show that you know your stuff.  What you learn in this program will often be directly applicable the next day at work—and what you’re doing at work will frequently inform the work you’re doing in your courses. It’s all about real-world applicability so every moment spent studying is time well spent.

This online program is composed of the following courses. Some may be waived through transfer from your previous college experience or if you are SHRM-CP/SCP or HRCI PHR/SPHR/GPHR certified. The rest you will typically complete one at a time as you make your way through your program, working with your Program Mentor each term to build your personalized Degree Plan. You’ll work through each course as quickly as you can study and learn the material. As soon as you’re ready, you’ll pass the assessment, complete the course, and move on. This means you can finish as many courses as you're able in a term at no additional cost.

The M.S. in Human Resource Management is 100% online and SHRM- and HRCI-content aligned. It’s compact—10 courses—to help you quickly get the expertise you need to build your career. You’ll also be prepared to earn your SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture credential at no additional cost—it’s included in your tuition.

You’ll take courses boosting your expertise in management, communication, employment law, and more. Along the way, you’ll also earn a WGU certificate in HR Technology and Analytics for Decision Making.

This course covers principles of effective management and leadership that maximize organizational performance. The following topics are included: the role and functions of a manager, analysis of personal leadership styles, approaches to self-awareness and self-assessment, and application of foundational leadership and management skills.

This course focuses on strategies and tools that managers use to maximize employee contribution and create organizational excellence. You will learn talent management strategies to motivate and develop employees as well as best practices to manage performance for added value.

This course prepares students for the communication challenges in organizations. Topics examined include theories and strategies of communication, persuasion, conflict management, and ethics that enhance communication to various audiences.

The Business Acumen course introduces you to the operation of the business enterprise and the role of management in directing the activities of the business. You will examine the roles of management in the context of business functions such as marketing, operations, accounting, and finance.

This course presents critical problem-solving methodologies, including field research and data collection methods that enhance organizational performance. Topics include quantitative analysis, statistical and quality tools. You will improve your ability to use data to make informed decisions.

Inclusive Workplace Culture Capstone provides students with the opportunity to work through the SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture specialty credential course content, studying and analyzing how human resource (HR) professionals can integrate an inclusive approach to all HR functions such as talent acquisition, training and development, total rewards, and more. Students will complete a capstone project that synthesizes an inclusive approach to strategic HR practices for an organization to create an environment of true belonging for all employees, while simultaneously being prepared to complete the SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture exam independently to earn a specialty credential and badge from SHRM.

HR Technology and People Analytics introduces students to the types of human resource information systems (HRISs), applications, and platforms used to capture and manage employee data and the analytics used to make strategic decisions based on that data. Students will discover how to plan for the implementation of new human resource (HR) technology, present the plan to stakeholders to gain buy-in and support for the change, and train employees in the new systems. Students will also gain an understanding of how to pull and use data and people analytics for effective storytelling, decision-making, and leadership influence.

Future Focused Total Rewards examines discretionary and legally required approaches to compensation and benefits practices that compose an organization’s total rewards system. Students explore how to develop and communicate the components of a competitive total rewards strategy to prospective and existing employees while adhering to employment laws and aligning to an organization’s strategic goals and culture.

Talent Acquisition and Development provides an in-depth look at the strategies used to attract, retain, and develop qualified talent in an organization. Students discover how to hire the right talent to meet the needs of the organization, how to orient and onboard new employees, and how to ensure employee excellence through learning and development and performance management strategies.

HR Compliance and Employee Relations provides students with an in-depth understanding of the relevant laws, regulations, and ethical issues related to human resource (HR) compliance and risk management. It also explores how to resolve and improve employee relations issues to maintain a positive organizational culture in a diverse workplace. Topics include business laws and ethical considerations, employment and labor laws and regulations, and employee relations strategies to build and maintain a positive, healthy, and respectful work environment.

Capstone Project

Special requirements for this program

At the end of your program, you’ll complete a capstone course that includes the SHRM Inclusive Workplace Culture content. After completing the course, you’ll be ready to sit for the SHRM exam and earn your credential/badge at no additional cost.
