The limousine business has grown by an average annual rate of 2.7% over the last 15 years and brings in revenues of over $12 billion in the US alone. If you’re a people person who doesn’t mind long hours, starting a limousine business may be for you, but you’ll want to plan carefully, market effectively, and vary your types of service to ensure your business is a success.

Planning Your Limousine Company

Step 1 Know what you’re getting into.

  • Virtual Call Center – All you need for this is a business card, website, and toll-free number. You will field calls or internet request for rides and subcontract them to limo services, taking up to a 20% commission. This is an inexpensive way to build a customer base and accrue capital.   • Drive A Vehicle – You will need to start with a black sedan (usually a Town Car) and/or a limousine (white is preferable at first), both of which will require a significant investment. On the other hand, driving your own vehicle will allow you to increase your revenue substantially.
  • Fleet – Launching a fleet is the riskiest way to start your business, as it requires a large outlay of capital to purchase multiple sedans and limousines. You will also have to hire a dispatcher and chauffeurs, who will typically pay a flat fee to use lease your vehicles ($75-$150 a day) or give you a percentage of their fares (usually one third). More vehicles on the road can mean more money, but it can also mean bigger losses if business is slow.

Step 4 Write a business...

  • Your business concept: what you are offering, your strengths and weaknesses, long term goals, and performance indicators, beyond the bottom line, which will let you know you are succeeding or failing. These last might include important measures like the number of repeat customers and the number of inquiries you convert into sales.
  • Market research: the nature of the industry, who are your customers (business men, airport traffic, weddings, etc), who are the other limousine companies you will be competing with, what prices are charged. Remember that the goal is to sell service. This is a luxury business; being the cheap limousine company is not a good business model.
  • A marketing plan: how you will communicate with customers and grow your customer base.
  • An operations plan: identify the individual projects that will lead to completing your larger goals. To begin with, these might include things like: hiring a designer, registering your domain, and finding a webhost – all to build a website; or finding livery insurance, buying a car, and choosing billing options – all to prepare your vehicle for service.
  • Financial projections: these include a list of assets before you start the business; start-up costs such as building a website, getting insurance, obtaining permits, and purchasing a vehicle; marketing costs; and revenue projections. You will need to know how much business you need to do at what price in order to show a profit, and how long you can perform at a loss.

  • Sole proprietorship – An unincorporated business run by an individual. No special steps are needed to form a sole proprietorship, and since there is no distinction between the business and you, the owner, the income from the business is reported as your income. You pay self employment tax.   • Partnership – A business where two or more people share ownership. To form one you must choose a name and register your business with your state. You must also register with the IRS and get a tax ID. Profits are passed through to the partners, who pay taxes on them on their individual tax return. This includes self employment tax. Partners are liable for their own actions and those of their partners.
  • Limited liability company (LLC) – To start an LLC, you must, at a minimum, choose a name and file articles of organization with your state, often for a fee. LLC owners pay taxes on profits through their individual income tax returns and have to pay self employment tax, but are protected from personal liability for the decisions and actions of the company.
  • Corporation – An independent legal entity owned by shareholders. To register your corporation you must choose a company name and file articles of incorporation with your state. You will also need to register with the IRS and get a tax ID. Corporations file taxes separately from their owners. This may prove advantageous, allowing owners to take advantage of the corporate tax rate, but it may also lead to double taxation. You should speak with your lawyer or accountant to see if this form of business will benefit you.
  • S Corporation – An independent legal entity owned by shareholders, like a typical corporation, except that to avoid double taxation, profits and losses are passed through to the owners’ personal tax returns, instead of the company paying taxes.

Step 3 Choose your business name and register it with your state government.

  • Web designers will build your site and take care of registering your domain name and selecting a webhost. The more you pay, the more input you will have in creating a unique site.
  • The cost of web design varies depending on whether you use a solo developer in the US ($25-$100/hr), an offshore web company ($10-$40/hr), or an established US agency ($60-$200/hr).

Chef behind 2 of Nashville's best food trucks moves Peruvian business to storefront

H e's well known for operating two of the best food trucks in Nashville — Two Peruvian Chefs and, most recently, The Inka Trailer . Now, Chef Marcio Florez, after a brief stop at East Nashville restaurant incubator The Wash, has come off the road and into a full-blown brick-and-mortar spot in East Nashville.

Limo Peruvian Eatery opened in late January serving Peruvian-style sandwiches, Peruvian entrees and one incredibly rich seafood-packed soup (more on that later) for lunch and dinner at 10th and Fatherland.

The restaurant was founded by Mauricio Sulay and Florez, an affable, easy-going chef you can't help but root for.

Senior dining reporter Mackensy Lunsford and Brad Schmitt went to check it out last week.

Brad : Mack, I gotta tell ya, I've been excited to visit here for months. Loved loved loved Chef Marcio's Inka Trailer, especially the nearly perfect fresh ceviche. So I practically skipped into Limo, a bright, modern space with a high vaulted ceiling.

Mackensy: This was my second time visiting this spot after becoming obsessed over the ceviche from the Inka Trailer. Most times I've had Florez's food have been in unlikely places, from a kiosk at Bonnaroo to a truck at the farmers market. I can't think of a time when it wasn't great, but most of my forays into his cooking revolved around ceviche, empanadas and lomo saltado. I was excited to see what he could bring to a full-service restaurant with a substantial menu.

He came out swinging right off the bat with the fried jalea, a dish of fried fish, shrimp, calamari, yuca, plantains and mussels with a Peruvian take on tartar sauce. It's somehow magic. Not one to repeat an order very often, I nevertheless ordered it again when I returned with you, and I plan to go back and sit at the bar with a pisco sour and that dish. Again. And again.

Brad : Hell yeah, you'll order it again. Amazing! The perfect light batter and light fry on that perfectly fresh seafood? Yummmmmm. I also loved the perfectly crunchy-outside-soft-inside yuca on the plate. But I'm not gonna lie, Mack, I was nervous about the veal heart starter (antichuchos) on the menu. Heart? Never had it. Turns out, I really liked it, both the unique texture and the little kick of spice. And the chicken empanadas reminded me of a delicious, rich pot pie.

The only slight bummer for me, among the starters, was the ceviche. So much mango sauce! I much preferred the clean simple ceviche we got from Chef's Inka Trailer truck last year.

Mack: I also didn't like the way the ceviche swam in that thick, overbearing sauce. I would steer diners toward the Pier 615, a fresh and light traditional ceviche with an extra surprise of fried calamari. You need it in your life.

I was also not really into the trio de causitas, three little stacks of pressed mashed potatoes with shrimp, octopus and crab salad. It's pretty, but too fussy and light on flavor when I tried it on a previous visit.

The antichuchos were the exact opposite: liberally spiced, exploding with flavor, served with crispy, flavorful potatoes and choclo, or Peruvian corn. I'm also a fan of hearts of all sorts and have long tried to make it my mission to get people to try them. Of all the offal, this one's perhaps the easiest to stomach (apologies for the awful pun).

Brad : Look at Mack, making awful offal puns. (That's some quality foodie humor right there, folks. 😊) Let's get to your favorite dish, Mackensy, a ginormous bowl of seafood-packed soup, the chupe de camarones. I immediately was intrigued by the poached egg floating in the middle of that sea of gorgeous golden orange broth.

This is now my favorite dish. The broth is rich and comforting, with a depth of flavor I'm not sure I've ever had before. I didn't want to stop spooning it into my face. It felt like a big warm Peruvian hug. The chunks of fresh seafood and veggies were a big bonus.

Mack : The chupe de camarones is now my favorite soup in Nashville, hands down, and it has some stiff competition. It's a demonstration of European influence on indigenous Peruvian food and it's just plain ridiculously delicious.

What you have here is a deeply flavorful shrimp bisque punched up with Peruvian aji amarillo and other peppers, herbs and vegetables such as choclo. It's finished with plenty of evaporated milk, a giant yolky egg and some soft cubes of cheese that were probably queso fresco but tasted and felt more like soft paneer. Our server told us to expect a bucket of soup, and that's basically what we got. We barely put a dent in it and had nearly a quart left over.

I've sampled my way through at least a half dozen other dishes that I won't even bother to bring up at this point because the bottom line is this: Limo Peruvian is one of the best new restaurants in Nashville.
