How to Use a Simple Homework Progress Tracker

The homework chart allows you and your child to keep track of several homework related activities. It is important that you help your child with this for the first few weeks to ensure that your child understands how to use it. You could also involve your child’s teacher with certain portions of this chart. For example, you could ask your child’s teacher to initial the chart when all homework is complete or when your child writes down their assignments accurately. This might be more appropriate for some children, particularly those who have a history of being dishonest about schoolwork.

Before you begin, you should decide where you will keep the chart. For this chart, it might be best to slide it into the front outside of a binder with a clear plastic cover, or slide the chart into a clear sheet protector inside the binder. It is important that the chart is in a place that is readily accessible and visible. Kids who have ADHD can benefit if the chart is in a spot where they will easily see it. This will help them remember to use it.

Step 1: Establish The Baseline

For the first week you simply sit with your child and go through the worksheet together each day. For each activity the child completes, put a sticker, star, checkmark, or smiley face in the corresponding square. It is important to ignore a bad attitude, whining, etc. Focus only on whether the task is complete. It is not recommended to put any negative words or symbols such as “No” or a frowning face.

At the end of the week, count up the number of positive marks your child earned each day or for the entire week. This is the baseline. Now that you know the baseline, you can set a goal for the following week.

Step 2: Establish a Goal

You can set daily goals, weekly goals, or both. Here are some examples:

Daily goal and reward system: The maximum number of positive marks your child can earn each day is 5. Suppose your child currently gets 2 positive marks each day. It is not reasonable to ask your child to immediately begin getting 5 check marks each day. Rather you want to start where she is and slowly work forward. You might make it a goal for your child to get 3 positive marks per day next week. Each day your child reaches 3 positive marks next week, she would earn a reward such as extra TV time.

Weekly goal and reward system: You could also offer weekly rewards. Suppose your child only achieved a baseline of 10 positive marks for the week. For the next week you might set a goal for your child to earn 15 positive marks. If she gets 15 or more positive marks next week, this would earn her a larger reward in the weekend such as having a sleepover.

Step 3: Continue to Evaluate Progress

As your child achieves each goal, you can slightly increase the goal for the following week. Don’t hesitate to mix up the rewards if your child is getting bored, or offer two choices for your child to choose from.

Thank you for all your awesome ideas!

My school is closed and we are not permitted to do online teaching on our school website. I have had several parents ask for some contact and work. I am happy to accommodate. I miss them terribly.

So, on a different email address, I will be sending them some supplements. I love being able to edit this weekly sheet and with add worksheets to it. Next week, I can make it subject specific and when I become more courageous, we may do a little virtual teaching.

Thanks for your wonderful tools. I am not very tech savvy, so I have not yet tried your interactive activities.

I am so happy to hear that our distance learning resources are helpful to you! This is such a strange time and I know that we are all looking forward to the day that we are back in the classroom with our kiddos. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about our interactive activities. 🙂

Thankyou so much for resources Cindy

We are so happy that you are finding our resources to be helpful. Have a wonderful day! 🙂

Student Data Trackers in Google Sheets

Tracking Student Data in Google Sheeets: Video Tutorials & Student Data Tracker Templates

It can be difficult, at times, to keep track of all of your instructional data, especially with so many subjects during our day. Especially if your school district, or school, doesn’t have a data system. Google Sheets is a great tool to keep track of student data for ongoing formative assessments, as well as diagnostic assessments. Having your assessment data accessible also makes it easy to use data to drive classroom instruction, or intervention. Once you have your data spreadsheet set up, it’s easy to adjust for different needs. And, you can reuse the same set up year after year. There are so many ways to customize your student data tracker spreadsheets to fit your needs, and make it work for you! I talk about a few different set ups I’ve used, and/or continue to use, throughout this post. Here’s a look at some easy ways you can track student data with Google Sheets.

Why track student data in Google Sheets?

Tracking student data in Google Sheets has many practical benefits!

  • Accessibility- Since it’s cloud based, you can access it anywhere! I hate lugging my school computer home, so I rarely do. But, if I’m grading at home, I can still access my student data spreadsheets from home!
  • Collaboration- Since more than one person can access Google Sheets at once, it’s the perfect program for managing student data for more than one classroom. Tracking RtI or intervention data or grade level performance on a school or district assessment are both done easily within Google Sheets. Or, it just makes it possible for you to share your data with your administration team, principal, or instructional coach.
  • Autocalculations- My favorite reason for using Google Sheets or Excel for my data is the built in formulas! I use it to figure out student percentages from raw scores, I use it to generate a list of students based on proficiency, and I use it to color code based on student proficiency. I always build in averages into the spreadsheet so that I can monitor my overall student performance.
  • Visualization- If you are a visual learner, it’s super fast and quick to add graphs and charts to reflect your data. While that’s not frequently how I like to view it, it’s super simple to add in.
  • Versatile- From just checklists for attendance, weekly assessments, formative assessments, and more, you can use Google Sheets (or Excel!) to manage virtually anything you want to track in the classroom!

I used to use Excel to track my data, back in the olden days. Over the years, I’ve shifted to Sheets. I don’t think there’s a single feature I miss in my switch, especially since I don’t utilize the full functions of Sheets or spreadsheets in general.

How do I create student data trackers in Google Sheets?

The first iterations of my data tracking were literally just places to store scores. Over the years, as I’ve learned more about options available in Excel and now Google Sheets, I’ve been better able to customize them to meet my needs. Whether you’re looking to create one spreadsheet you can use to track data in a subject area, or a powerhouse of sheets to hold everything you need, you can build the spreadsheet that meets your needs.

I could list a series of steps to follow to build your student data tracker. But, chances are, if seeing the steps was enough for you, you would have already made your own! So, I think videos are the most helpful. Many people have anxiety around spreadsheet software but I love using them! I’ve spent significant amounts of time learning new things when I want the spreadsheet to do something I don’t yet know how to do! I’m not a pro by any means but I’ve learned a few tricks or two along the years.

This video walks through setting up a pretty basic, academic, standards-based student data tracker. I teach you how to build in formulas to copy information from other cells (so you don’t need to duplicate names), auto-calculating percentages, how to set up conditional formatting to color code based on student mastery, identifying the number of proficient students, and how to build in averages.

Free Student Data Tracker Template

In the video above I walk through how to set up this student data tracker and give suggestions for ways you can modify it to better meet your needs. If you’d rather not build it from scratch, I have a free standards tracking spreadsheet template you can download. The template is exactly what’s shown in the video, and it’s ready for you to continue to customize to meet your needs!

More In-Depth Student Data Tracking

In this Part 2 video, I take that same student data tracker and build individual student reporting pages. These allow you to see how each individual student is performing, standard-by-standard or skill by skill. It’s all set up with formulas so once it’s set up for one student, it’s pretty quick and simple to create it for the rest of the students in your class!  In this video, I talk through formulas for copying cells over to be displayed, adding graps, and conditional formatting.

Student Math Data Tracking Sheets

I think it’s very important to track student data standard by standard in math. It allows you to see who is in need of reteaching or extra support. So many skills build off of a previously learned skill in math. It makes it easy to spiral standards, but also means it’s critical students master them so they’re ready for the next layer. I have standards based math data tracking sheets prepped and ready for you. They’re currently available for grades 1-4. They are prebuilt with the Common Core Math Standards, but are editable so you can change them to match the standards for your state. Or, add in additional skills you’d like to track.

My favorite part of these math data trackers are the student information sheets. These student data pages are auto-generated! They’re literally  no extra work for you! They prepopulate based on the assessment scores you enter into the data spreadsheet. They display the student scores by standard, organized by domain. This makes them perfect reporting pages for parents, or to take with you to a data meeting like RtI, MTSS, or IEP case conferences.

2nd grade math standards data tracking student sheet

I have math data trackers available for 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade. They are ready to be used, and are customizable to match your state standards, or district’s assessments. Each is tailored to your specific grade level and includes a video tutorial that walks you through how to use them. You can get yours sent to your inbox (for free) at Math Data Tracking Spreadsheets .

Phonics Tracking Sheets

Another pre-made student data tracker template I have available is my phonics tracking spreadsheets. This spreadsheet is built using the Quick Phonics Screener but is entirely editable to match whatever assessment you use. Tracking phonics data skill by skill is a great way to ensure students are making progress with their foundational reading skills. I’ve included the video tutorial below, but head to my Free Phonics Data Tracker Spreadsheet page to grab the tracker and read more about it.

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments Data Tracking

Do you give the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments? If so, this data tracker is for you! Designed for the Kindergarten and Primary Phonemic Awareness Assessments, this data tracker also creates individual student reporting pages. Designed similar to my Phonics Data Tracker, just enter in names and scores and the individual pages are created for you! Just head to my Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessments page to grab it for yourself!

You can use Google Sheets to create even more in-depth student data trackers! Do you use Google Sheets in other ways? I’d love to hear it in the comments below.

Thank you for sharing!

You’re welcome!

This is exactly what I needed! Thank you! Any chance of grade 5 sheets in the future?

I have it on my to do list!

Hi I was unable to open the tracker template. Would you be able to email me a copy?

Hi! Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to go digital! Is there a way to add more progress monitoring tabs?

You can add more tabs by just duplicating them. However, they will not show up on the student pages without extensive work.

Do you have a data tracker for UFLI?

I don’t. I believe they recommend the QPS or Core Phonics Survey as the diagnostic assessment. If you were wanting it to track your students’ progress each week, this is set up for diagnostic and progress monitoring assessments and not weekly. With that said, if the format fits your needs, you are able to edit the skill titles and raw scores to match any assessment’s sequence.

Thank you for your generosity!

Printable Homework Charts for Kids

Homework Charts Header

Homework Charts Introduction

Ah-h-h-h, the evergreen challenge of making sure the kids’ homework is done. You can make life easier by using one of our versatile Homework Charts to take the guesswork out of expectations. Some kids, especially those with attention difficulties, do better with a chart to help keep them focused. Others like checking off items when completed, much as  adults enjoy clearing a to-do list. Of course, then there are those who try to avoid homework as much as possible. The chart reminds them of your expectations.

Selecting a Homework Chart

We’ve developed Homework Charts for primary ages to teens. You’ll know as a parent when you need to start the process to provide structure and an incentive with homework. You don’t need to start a chart until it is needed. (In fact if you have a youngster who handles all the homework without intervention, give yourself a star!)

Using Our Printable Homework Charts

You may want to include details, like by what time homework should be started. Or you may want to simply focus on academic subjects. You can include different aspects of homework: Bringing assignments and books home, packing up completed work properly for taking to school, and a spot for turning in work. Be sure to sit down and have a discussion with your child. For older students, come to an agreement on how the homework should be approached. Nail down expectations, and determine a reasonable incentive. It feels great to get work out of the way without you having to keep reminding them; let our Homework Charts help.

Behavior Chart Guide:  Get helpful tips on using charts (plus 10 bonus charts and a free poster)

Keep it Interesting

We suggest rotating the chart from time to time to help keep young children involved with the chart. Don’t forget that Premium and Pro Members at Latitudes.org can type directly onto these charts. We recommend printing a few at a time, then complete another chart in a similar manner, and keep them in a file folder ready for use.

Enjoy and Have Fun!

If you like using our Homework Charts, then please use our social share buttons to tell your friends and family about them.

Be sure to check out all of the other charts and printables we offer on our site by navigating our menu. We also suggest for you to follow us on Pinterest  for more helpful goodies! We regularly post behavior charts and other useful behavioral tools to our followers.

If you have any ideas on new charts that you would like to see us offer, then please send us a note . We would love to hear from you!

Reading Logs

June 8, 2022 by Printabulls Team 2 Comments

Printable-Reading-Logs-Feature-Image

Whether you are well into the school year or are enjoying a relaxed summertime schedule, reading logs are undoubtedly an excellent way for your child or student to keep track of their book-reading goals.

During the school year, children (in both elementary and middle school) are encouraged – or even required – to read as much as possible and are usually given a target number of minutes or pages to read every day. If you are an educator, homeschooler, or are a parent who simply wants their child to excel in reading, printing out a reading log for them to keep track of their minutes is the perfect way to ensure they are reading an appropriate minimum amount. Tracking progress also allows the child to see how well they are doing which will encourage them to read even more!

If the school year has ended and you’re already into summertime mode it doesn’t mean that reading is less important or unneeded – with all that extra time on their hands it is actually a perfect opportunity to have your child check out some books from the local library (more book trackers here!) and dive in! Reading year-round will help them maintain all the progress they’ve made during the previous school year in terms of reading and comprehension, plus it’s a great boredom buster – who doesn’t love getting lost in a great book!?

Below, we have 21 Free Printable Reading Logs for your child(ren) to use! Each one will allow them to keep track of the titles, minutes, and/or pages they have read every day. Some are specific to summer reading while others are perfect for use any time of the year. Several are weekly reading logs while the remainder are monthly. There is a lot of variety when it comes to what you’re looking for, so be sure to scroll through the options below to pick the perfect one for your needs!

After you’ve found the one you want to use, all you need to do is click on the image, download the free PDF file to your computer, and print!

All that’s left now is to find a good book (or a few) and enjoy some good quality reading time!

Progress Tracking: Using Rewards to Monitor Kindergarten Achievement

Rewards in kindergarten classrooms act as markers for tracking children’s progress, much like a compass guides a lost traveler. In the fast-paced world of early education, where each step a child takes shapes their future, having a reliable system to monitor progress is crucial.

Let’s look into how using rewards in kindergarten not only monitors achievement but also creates a positive learning environment that fosters growth and development.

Strategies to Track Students’ Progress with Rewards in Kindergarten

Sticker chart method.

The sticker chart method is a great tool for kindergarten teachers to track students’ progress and motivate them with rewards. It helps make progress visible and encourages students to do their best.

Daily Star Rewards

Implementing the Daily Star Rewards system in kindergarten classrooms helps teachers track students’ progress and offer incentives for academic achievement. By setting daily star goals for each child, teachers can monitor their daily advancement toward kindergarten success.

Behavior Token System

Implementing a Behavior Token System in kindergarten classes improves the monitoring of students’ progress and offers specific rewards for positive behavior and accomplishments. This system involves a behavior chart to visually track students’ actions, aiding them in comprehending their advancement.

The reward structure linked with the behavior tokens motivates students to consistently display desired behaviors. Monitoring progress becomes more effective, enabling timely interventions and positive reinforcement.

Weekly Prize Incentives

WeekStudentAchievements
1AliceFinished reading 5 books
2BenMemorized numbers up to 100
3ChloeEnhanced handwriting skills
4DavidMastered addition up to 10
5EmilyActively participated in group activities

Individual Progress Charts

In my kindergarten classroom, I use individual progress charts to track each student’s development and provide them with rewards for their accomplishments. This method helps me monitor progress effectively while keeping the students motivated and engaged in their learning journey.

Here are three key strategies I incorporate alongside individual progress charts:

Team-Based Reward System

Introducing a team-based reward system in kindergarten not only tracks progress efficiently but also nurtures a culture of cooperation and shared success, establishing a solid foundation for future academic pursuits.

Monthly Achievement Certificates

Celebrate small victories.

Students receive success certificates highlighting their specific achievements, and they’re rewarded with high fives for their individual victories. By highlighting these small wins, I cultivate a positive and supportive environment that encourages students to keep striving for success.

Peer Recognition Activities

Fun reward tokens.

The system involves a reward chart where students earn tokens for each accomplishment. These tokens can then be exchanged for achievement badges, creating a motivating program that inspires students to do well.

The vibrant tokens add excitement to monitoring progress, making it enjoyable for the children and giving them a sense of achievement with each token earned.

Interactive Achievement Board

I use progress monitoring tools on the board to personalize support for each child based on their development needs.

Special Class Rewards

Personalized Achievement Badges

Involving parents in the reward system helps create a supportive environment for the children, while teacher guidance ensures that the badges accurately reflect each student’s successes.

Classroom Treasure Chest

Goal-setting sticker charts.

By using this tool, we can effectively track each student’s development and offer tailored support to enrich their learning journey. The visual representation of goals and rewards on the sticker charts serves as a strong motivator for our young learners, instilling a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements.

Positive Behavior Tickets

Daily achievement stamps.

In my kindergarten class, I use a system of daily achievement stamps to track students’ progress and reward their successes. Every day, students earn personalized achievement badges when they meet their daily goals. These badges serve as visual reminders of their accomplishments and inspire them to keep pushing themselves.

Group Reward Challenges

Reward jar collection.

In my classroom, I’ve introduced an engaging way to monitor kindergarten students’ progress through a Reward Jar Collection system. This system involves filling a jar with colorful tokens that students earn for completing tasks, demonstrating kindness, or reaching academic goals.

Attendance Reward System

Random surprise rewards.

Tracking students’ progress in kindergarten can be done effectively by using random surprise rewards. As a kindergarten teacher, I’ve seen how surprise treats, mystery rewards, instant prizes, unexpected gifts, and spontaneous incentives can really motivate and engage young learners.

Virtual Reward Stickers

Moreover, personalized reward badges can be customized to each student’s preferences, making the recognition even more significant. Through the use of virtual reward stickers, kindergarten educators can effectively track progress and encourage ongoing development.

Homework Completion Rewards

In-class achievement celebrations.

In-Class Achievement CelebrationsBenefits

Milestone MomentsCelebrates individual growth

Class Goal Tracking

Implementing a system of setting and tracking class goals can effectively motivate and reward kindergarten students for their progress. To ensure student engagement and celebrate achievements, I use the following strategies:

Using rewards to monitor kindergarten achievement is a valuable tool for teachers. It motivates students, helps track progress, and celebrates accomplishments.
