A Smarter Way to Teach With Movies

Swank Motion Pictures’ film streaming platform, Swank K-12 Streaming, offers exclusive access to the largest single library of feature films, documentaries and foreign films available to K-12 schools for instructional support. Featuring over 30,000 movies, Swank’s cloud-hosted streaming platform eliminates common obstacles – such as the lack of DVD players, blocked personal streaming sites and DVD library maintenance. Plus, teachers can easily assign films to students outside the classroom through any Learning Management System.

Watch the video below to learn how our new streaming platform simplifies film distribution for your entire school!

How it works:.

Start with a curated collection of films and then add to it throughout the year.

Curated Collections

Choose from one of our three preset collections specifically curated for education based on the most frequently used films by schools across the country:

  • Elementary Collection
  • Middle School Collection
  • High School Collection
  • District Collection
  • K-12 School Collection

Custom Title Requests

Teachers have access to search through thousands of films to identify the additional movies to be added to your collection throughout the year. And while our curated collections should be the majority of films your school will use, we understand that teachers are creative and new films become available throughout the year.

8 Apps That Combine All Your Streaming Services Into One

If you’re buying a projector to watch outdoors, make sure to check these specs, why i regret buying an android tablet instead of an ipad.

Although free movie streaming might sound synonymous with piracy, there are loads of legal free movie websites on the internet. These are packed full of movies you can stream for free without breaking the law.

Whether you're looking for movies or TV shows, finding free videos to stream is totally feasible; it just requires that you know where to look. With that in mind, here are the best free online movie streaming sites to check out.

What to Expect From Free Movie Streaming Sites

There are a ton of free, legal videos online, so you'll find a great mix of options on the below services. A healthy amount of the movies available to stream for free are in the public domain. Because these films have lapsed in ownership and fallen into common property, many sites host such video treasures.

But it isn't just B-movies available to stream online; you'll also find many big-budget releases. Usually, these are ad-supported, so like watching a movie on TV, you'll have to sit through limited commercials. Nevertheless, the movies are usually presented uncut.

You shouldn't expect to see the latest releases. Instead, you'll mostly see movies dating back anywhere from a few months to many years. Additionally, some sites include original productions and amateur films.

To watch on the go, don't forget to also install some of the best free movie apps on your phone.

YouTube Free Movies

It's no surprise that YouTube ranks among the best free movie streaming sites you can find. It offers a ton of free films to pick from, including many public domain films from channels such as the aptly titled Public Domain Films .

Furthermore, channels like Popcornflix host full movies via YouTube, and you'll find an official Free to Watch section in YouTube's Movies & Shows hub. There's a fantastic mix, with everything from classic comedies to sports and much more. It's a far cry from channels that only offer movies from the 1950s you've never heard of.

You may have to dig a bit for what you want to watch. But for those with patience, YouTube is a treasure trove of free, legal movies to stream.

Crackle Movies

Boasting a solid array of syndicated content and its own productions, Crackle is a must for any film buff . Its rotating selection varies, but you'll find quality movies across genres here.

Aside from films, Crackle features television shows, including original programming. And by making a free account, you can enjoy Crackle on your TV too.

3. Midnight Pulp

Midnight Pulp Free Movie Site

Midnight Pulp is the new home of the defunct CONtv It features live TV, shows, and movies. The selection is a bit wild, consisting largely of horror, offbeat comedies, cheesy action, and Asian films. Some content requires a subscription, but a lot of what's here is available to watch for free.

Vudu Free Movies

While Vudu is known for its digital video rentals and sales, it has a sizable selection of free movies to stream too. With a comprehensive array of movies and TV shows, plus fresh additions arriving regularly, it's a fantastic service.

Vudu's free section operates similarly to Crackle by providing full movies with limited commercials. Through hosting films with ads, Vudu is able to offer free movies and TV shows legally.

You need to register for a free Vudu account to use this service, but it's worth doing so. Once you do, you can use your account to activate digital copies of movies and shows, as well as buy and rent movies from Vudu.

5. Popcornflix

PopcornFlix Website

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Flicks are segmented into genres that are more unique than the standard ones, such as Out for Revenge and Medieval Action . With a beefy lineup and easy navigation, Popcornflix is an awesome choice for free, legal movie streaming.

Tubi Website

Providing free movies and shows, Tubi is another fantastic service for legal movie streams. Here, you'll be able to view newer movies from as recent as 2022, as well as older favorites.

Helpfully, Tubi offers a Leaving Soon category. This lets you prioritize your streaming queue so you can catch movies and shows before they disappear. Be sure to check out the First Time on Tubi collection, too.

7. Pluto TV

Pluto TV Movies

Pluto TV has a lot to offer. You'll find a Live TV section where you can switch between channels, much like traditional cable. Switch to the Live TV section on the left side to jump to channels that only play films, though they may be in the middle of something depending on when you start watching.

If you can't find something that you like on the live stations, switch to the On Demand section at the top. Here you'll find tons of free movies you can start streaming right away.

8. Classic Cinema Online

Classic Cinema Online

As the name suggests, Classic Cinema Online focuses on older content. Even its website aesthetic captures a decidedly retro vibe, using a backdrop of red theater curtains. You can walk through the decades here with films from the 1930s to the 1960s. There are even some silent films on offer, if you're interested in those.

Some of the inclusions may have you calling the definition of "classic cinema" into question. Nevertheless, Classic Cinema Online is pure gold for old-school movies and one of the best sites for public domain films .

Hoopla Movies

Hoopla has one barrier to entry, but is still an easy way to legally watch movies online for free. To use Hoopla, you'll need to create an account and link your supported public library card.

Once you do, you can use Hoopla to borrow movies and TV shows, plus audiobooks and ebooks, from your library's collection. The service is available on the web as well as apps for all your devices and TV streaming boxes.

If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Yidio Free Movies

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Using the Free filter on the left side will help you find movies and TV that come at no cost. Unfortunately, not everything in the free categories is actually free. Clicking on some titles prompts you to sign up for a free trial.

Still, Yidio makes finding free movie streams far easier than checking individual sites manually. You can filter by rating, genre, and more to find something to watch.

11. The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel Movies

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

The selection rotates, and there are categories on the main page to help you find something you'll enjoy. As expected, you'll have to sit through ads, but ad-supported means free, right?

Kanopy Movies

Libraries are most often associated with books, but that's not all they provide. Kanopy, like Hoopla mentioned above, lets you stream tons of "thoughtful entertainment" movies for free, making it another great way to get free content with a participating library card (or university login).

With either of those, you can watch hundreds of free movies. These include a lot of documentaries and international films, so this is a great fit for those who want something a little different.

13. Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) lets you enjoy free movies on Amazon Video. The service launched in 2019 and while its name has changed, the experience has remained the same. It allows anyone with a free account to watch a selection of free movies and TV shows. In addition to watching online, you can enjoy this content on your Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other streaming devices.

Alongside the movies, you'll also find some TV series (including live channels) and originals to enjoy.

14. Free Movies Cinema

Free Movies Cinema

As the name suggests, Free Movies Cinema features legal free movie streaming. Unlike many sites, the selection touts not only general categories like action and comedy, but also short films and features.

There's also a collection of fan-made movies, such as Portal and Watch Dogs, based on video games of the same names.

15. Top Documentary Films

Top Documentary Films

If you're looking for free documentaries, you'll find plenty at Top Documentary Films. It packs a varied selection, including amateur documentaries you might not have heard about before.

Browse the Top 100 documentaries to find something that's popular, or take a look at recently added movies or the various genres to drill down a bit.

The Best Free Movie Sites for Everyone

With these free online movie streaming sites, you now know where to look for hundreds of free movies. Enjoy these legal films anytime, anywhere so you never go without something to watch.

Meanwhile, you should also know how to legally download movies for offline use, so you can enjoy them on your next flight or long trip.

Spotify's ai dj should read the local news too, spotify has a new secret premium plan, quick links, the roku channel.

The landscape of free movie streaming sites has massively expanded in recent years, with more sites popping up all the time. If you're looking to watch free movies online, here are our picks for the best options.

Tubi

It's hard to argue with the vastness of Tubi's library of free movies online, which includes everything from well-known classics and box-office hits to cult movies that sometimes are unavailable to stream anywhere else. Tubi provides an unprecedented opportunity for independent filmmakers to share their work, which means you can find a variety of micro-budget movies that otherwise might never be seen. Tubi has also branched out into original productions, although the quality of those films vary.

Since selections on free movie streaming sites change frequently, it's helpful that Tubi has dedicated sections both for movies that are newly added and movies that are leaving soon. The sheer volume of content can be a bit overwhelming, but Tubi breaks down selections by genre and into specialty collections that make the experience more manageable. The ad breaks are not excessive, and the countdown to each one makes it less jarring when the movie you're watching is interrupted.

  • Huge selection of movies and TV shows
  • Lesser-known films not available anywhere else
  • Useful warnings about ad breaks
  • Sheer volume of content can be overwhelming

Pluto TV logo.

Pluto TV is a pioneer in the popular free ad-supported TV (FAST) space, offering up a range of linear-style channels. That means you don't have to scroll through a library of titles if you just want to sit back and watch TV. Put on a channel devoted to a movie genre like drama or horror, or a niche interest like Godzilla movies or Hallmark, and Pluto will offer up an endless supply of programming. There are on-demand options, too, and if something on a FAST channel catches your interest, you can pause or start from the beginning.

Thanks to Pluto's Paramount Global corporate ownership, there's often premium content from Paramount Pictures, Paramount+, CBS, and Showtime cycling through the service's offerings, along with news from local CBS affiliates. The on-demand library is a little tougher to navigate than the live channels, and Pluto's interface always has some video auto-playing, which means you can change or mute the channel, but you can't turn it off while you browse.

  • Wide selection of live channels
  • Content from Paramount Global brands
  • Large on-demand library
  • Constant auto-play video

Amazon Freevee logo

Previously known as IMDb TV, Freevee is Amazon's home for watching free movies online. That means it's fully integrated into Amazon Prime Video, so if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber searching for something to watch, you'll find Freevee offerings alongside Prime Video's library. That can be convenient because it expands the selection of what's available, but it can also be frustrating when Prime Video users click on a movie or show only to discover that it features ad breaks.

For users who aren't Amazon Prime subscribers, though, Freevee offers a convenient way to watch free movies, including some Prime Video original programming that's offered through Freevee on a limited basis. Freevee has also delved into original programming with movies like the romantic comedy Love Accidentally and series like crime drama Bosch: Legacy and Emmy-nominated reality/scripted hybrid comedy Jury Duty . With the resources of Amazon behind it, Freevee has become one of the most prominent free movie websites.

Amazon Freevee

  • Integration with Amazon Prime Video
  • Large selection of content
  • Original programming including popular titles
  • Can be confusing to distinguish from Prime Video selections

/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Hoopla.png

Hoopla is one of two major free movie websites available to anyone with a library card from many libraries across the country. Depending on the individual library's policies, cardholders can stream a limited number of free movies online every month, without subscription fees or ads. Hoopla's film library includes an assortment of classics as well as many of the same fare available on free ad-supported streaming sites. It can sometimes be tough to find new releases, but Hoopla often carries movies that have just been released for VOD rental and aren't available on any other ad-supported or subscription-based streaming services yet.

Hoopla's borrowing limits also apply to its other available formats, including e-books, graphic novels, music, and audiobooks, so it can be tricky for dedicated library patrons to balance those different types of media. Hoopla sometimes offers "bonus borrows" of content that doesn't count toward monthly limits, and it also offers BingePass, with unlimited access to similar content like Hallmark programming or Curiosity Stream documentaries for a set period of time.

  • Completely free with no ads
  • Selection of movies including exclusive new releases
  • Available to anyone with a library card
  • Limited number of streams per month
  • Movies and TV counted along with other media borrows

Kanopy

Like Hoopla, Kanopy is a way to watch free movies online for patrons of many libraries, as well as for university students. While there's plenty of overlap between selections on both Hoopla and Kanopy, Kanopy is more focused on foreign films, documentaries, and arthouse releases. Like Hoopla, Kanopy offers a limited number of free movies online depending on the individual institution that provides access. Unlike Hoopla, Kanopy is entirely devoted to movies and TV, so users don't have to split their credits among different types of media.

Selections on Kanopy may differ depending on licensing agreements for each sponsoring institution, so not every movie is available for every user. In general, Kanopy features a wide range of vintage and modern films, including movies from popular indie distributors like A24, which signed a long-term deal to provide content to Kanopy. That gives Kanopy a more diverse lineup of films than many subscription streaming services.

  • Impressive selection of arthouse and foreign films
  • Selections differ depending on the sponsoring institution

roku-channel

No, you don't need to own a Roku device in order to watch the Roku Channel . That common misconception may have kept some people away from one of the most reliable free movie websites. While the Roku Channel is integrated into Roku streaming devices and Roku TVs, it's also available as a standalone app on other streaming devices and as a website, where it features a selection of free ad-supported movies.

The Roku Channel also offers more than 350 live FAST channels, from cable brands like Ion and Court TV and franchises like The Walking Dead and Power Rangers . The Roku Channel has also delved into original programming, picking up all the shows from short-lived streaming service Quibi and producing original movies like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story . Ad breaks are relatively unobtrusive and usually cluster toward the first two-thirds or so of a movie, so the most involving part can run uninterrupted.

  • Available without a Roku device
  • Hundreds of live channels
  • Popular original programming
  • Roku integration limits usefulness elsewhere

Crackle

Initially launched in 2004, Crackle is one of the oldest free movie streaming sites, and it's undergone various changes in ownership and content over the years. One thing that's remained consistent is its position as a go-to site to watch free movies online, and its current ownership under Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment gives it access to a shared library of content with corporate sibling Redbox. You can find many of the same movies on both sites, with a range of genres, from classics to modern blockbusters, along with TV series including anime and British imports.

Crackle also hosts original content, including numerous romance and action movies, and TV shows like Chosen starring Milo Ventimiglia and the series adaptation of Guy Ritchie's Snatch . Although its original productions aren't as elaborate as they've been in the past, it's still a reliable destination for on-demand ad-supported movies, just as it's been for nearly two decades.

  • Longtime destination for free content
  • Robust library of movies and TV series
  • Scaled back original content

Free movies at Vudu

Although Vudu is mainly known as an outlet for digital purchases and rentals, it's also a destination for watching free movies online. Vudu's selections include certain movies that are available to stream for free with ads, alongside movies for rental or purchase. That can make things a bit confusing, especially when a movie's page lists both a rental price and a free option, but if you know what you are looking for, you can find plenty of options to watch free movies on Vudu.

There's a dedicated section on Vudu's site for free movies, so users don't have to sort through paid content in order to find something to watch for free. Vudu's free selections include movies and TV series in a variety of genres. Browsing through genres pulls up both free and paid offerings, so users can find something to watch for free as an alternative to a rental or purchase. It provides a good balance as long as you pay attention to how each selection is labeled.

  • Free content integrated with rentals and purcahses
  • Dedicated section for free offerings
  • Can be difficult to differentiate free and paid selections

Free movies at Redbox

People may be more familiar with Redbox for its physical kiosks outside places like grocery stores and drugstores, which offer DVDs for rent, but the Redbox website is a destination for digital purchases and rentals as well as a place to watch free movies online. There's a much wider selection of movies at Redbox online than at the kiosk, although info about movies available for physical rental comes up in search results alongside digital availability. That's handy for finding all options to see a particular movie you want to watch, including the option to watch for free with ads.

You can also browse only the free selections, although they're a little buried on the site's home page. In addition to on-demand selections, Redbox also features FAST channels for a variety of movie genres and TV series, as well as news, music videos, and more. It's not as extensive as the FAST selections on some other sites, but it offers a decent sampling of what Redbox has to offer.

  • Wider selection of movies than Redbox kiosks
  • Extensive lineup of live channels
  • Free offerings integrated with paid rentals
  • Free section is somewhat difficult to navigate

Plex app icon on an Apple TV

Plex is so much more than just a place to watch free movies online, although it has plenty of free options available if that's what you're looking for. It's designed as a one-stop destination for all your movie-watching needs, so you can organize your personal collection of digital movies or build watch lists for various subscription streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Alongside those functions, Plex also includes plenty of movies to watch free with ads, which can be integrated with the rest of your movie library.

If you'd rather not sign up for an account, you can still easily just stream movies and TV shows for free with ads, and Plex features a similar range of selections as other sites that focus solely on free offerings, with more than 20,000 titles available. Plex also offers various FAST channels to complement its free on-demand lineup.

  • Integrated service for digital movie library and watchlist
  • On-demand selections and free live channels
  • Free selections only a small part of the service

Shout TV

The free movie streaming site for boutique film distributor Shout Factory, Shout TV focuses on genre fare and cult classics, along with a range of other free selections. It's home to FAST channels for cult favorites like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and ALF , as well as on-demand episodes of those and other offbeat TV series. The movie selection is heavy on horror, martial arts, sci-fi, and other cult genres. While Shout may not offer the breadth of other free movie websites, it's more expertly curated.

One thing available on Shout that even most subscription streaming services don't offer is commentary tracks, which are now mostly found only on DVD and Blu-ray releases. If you want to hear director John Carpenter talk about his horror anthology Body Bags , director Larry Cohen talk about cult monster movie Q: The Winged Serpent , or other filmmakers and actors comment on their work, then Shout is the free movie website to check out.

Shout Factory TV

  • Curated focus on cult and genre fare
  • Commentary tracks
  • Smaller selection than other services

YouTube app in an app folder

Everyone knows YouTube as the top place for video content online, with literally hundreds of millions of user-uploaded videos of every type. But YouTube also functions as a free movie streaming site, with an official selection of movies available to watch with ads. Given YouTube's sometimes chaotic free-for-all of content, it may be tough to find a particular movie to stream for free. It's possible to browse a list of YouTube's free movies online, but that listing isn't easy to locate from YouTube's home page.

YouTube's official free offerings are far from the only free movies available on the site, though, and there are dozens of legal YouTube channels that offer free movies, from public-domain selections to small independent films looking to find an audience. If you can wade through the reams of content and wrangle your way through YouTube's algorithm, it's possible to find plenty of hidden gems along with the more popular free selections.

  • Free mainstream movies with ads
  • Public domain and indie films uploaded by users
  • Volume of non-movie content makes curation difficult

The Best Websites To Stream Movies for Free

1. peacock tv.

2. YouTube

Many would be surprised to learn that YouTube actually has a decent collection of free movies to stream (with ads). Just log into YouTube and head over to the Movies & Shows  page to get started.

You’ll see a long list of movies that are Free with Ads, or available to rent at a low cost. Enjoy must-see classics like Fat Albert and foreign hits like the Ip Man movies.

Tubi is a completely-free movie service featuring News and popular old-school action films, comedies, horror movies and so much more. There are also family-friendly movies that you can watch with the kids.

There is no option to upgrade without ads, as the platform is free all around. The ads are what keep this service, with more than  35,000 viewing options, free . You can create an account quickly and start watching on a computer, or you can pair it to your TV with  an activation code .

Vudu TV

There are plenty of movies for free on Vudu if you don’t mind the ads. There are a wide variety of genres that can satisfy everyone in the family, from crime movies and documentaries, to rom-coms and international films.

If you want more content, you have the option to add payment information and rent or buy one of 200,000 or more popular titles, even recent theater releases. Vudu is part of the Fandango family, a brand etched in the brains of movie lovers nationwide, so there is no shortage of films you can access.

5. Pluto TV

Pluto TV gives you immediate access to more than 200 live channels after a quick sign-up option. There’s also a free movie database that houses a lengthy list of on-demand movies and TV shows, including reality TV hits and popular movie classics.

Some of the live streaming channels are a little non-traditional but they cater to specific niches, like a channel that streams horror films 24/7 or one that exclusively streams indie films. But you can still enjoy traditional fare like news and regular cable channels.

Check out the  channel lineup  to start watching live TV now for free or choose the  On-Demand option  to look through movies.

6. Popcornflix

Popcornflix has many  free movie options and some original programming . The streaming service boasts “no movie is more than two clicks away.” This is a rather unique channel particularly popular with vintage horror movie fans. But the service also includes a healthy selection of films in other genres, like martial arts, medieval, westerns and so much more.

You don’t need to log in to start watching. The channel states it is 100% legal. It’s part of the Crackle family of streaming services, owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. You can go to the account page and “Opt out of Ads personalization” if you’d like.

Crackle TV

This streaming channel is also part of the same company that brings you Popcornflix, so you’ll see some familiar movie titles if you’ve already browsed through Popcornflix’s fun database.

You do have to sign up and then you’ll be  directed to the main page  where you can choose videos or movies to watch. There is some overlap in shows available on Popcornflix, but this is much less of a niche channel than Popcornflix.

Kanopy is a free streaming option that is only available for people with public library cards, which are also usually free and an amazing amenity for the local community. You’ll be impressed with the movies on here, as it includes some recognizable classics and cinema from all over the world.

Find out if your library is a part of the Kanopy program by doing quick search  to find out. The service was created to be an extension of a library card, only instead of checking out books, you’re checking out movies or documentaries.

9. Viki

Viki calls itself the “ Heart of Asian Entertainment ” and is the best source for Korean dramas (with still some notable selections from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan). You’ll find endless classics you can binge back-to-back and even dramas that are still airing in Asia. Trust us, there is no shortage of available content to keep you entertained.

One of the fun features of Viki is the Watch Party option, where viewers can stream live movies and shows together while commenting in the live chat. If you find yourself watching a movie alone, join in is viewing party for some additional company.

While there is free content on Viki, there is an option to upgrade to a “Viki Pass”, which will cost up to $10 a month if you want additional content and an ad-free viewing experience.

10. Asiancrush

AsianCrushTV

Another channel that is dedicated to the growing adoration of Asian films and shows is  Asiancrush . The service has an impressive library of Asian films, including popular award-winning films but also some lesser-known indie flicks.

When you create an account, be sure to select the “Start for Free” account, or else it will prompt you for credit card information. When you’re looking at the list of movies and shows, look for an orange box with a crown in it at the top right of the title. That signals it is a premium movie and not free.

11. Freevee

Freevee is fueled by retail powerhouse Amazon, so you know it’s legal, legit, and loaded with great movies and shows. Freevee is available  through the app stores , but you’ll need an Amazon login to get in. If you have Fire TV, you already have free access to this channel. If you go to the Freevee website to watch a movie, it will take you to the Amazon page for viewing. Amazon details how to get Freevee on a variety of devices on its website.

12. The Roku Channel

If you have a Roku device, The Roku Channel is already available to you for free. You can upgrade to a paid level of service, but with the plethora of content available, you’ll still have plenty of options with the free version. The  web version of The Roku Channel  is also available to watch live or On Demand content from a desktop or laptop.

Plex TV

A quick sign-up gets you right into the Plex website and access to its “ Free Movies & TV ” content. You’ll have quite a lot to choose from, as it covers a long list of genres , including action films, animated flicks, crime movies and more.

You can also add your own videos, shows, and media of any kind to your own folder on this site. This is where a slippery legal slope comes in. If you upload a DVD from home to this site and share it, that probably is illegal. If you made a home movie and share it, you likely won’t get in legal trouble. Some call this website a harvester of piracy while others say it’s one of the best streaming sites out there.

Sling offers a variety of free movies and TV shows at no cost. You just  sign up on the website  or app without having to enter any payment information. You can watch live news, popular movies or highly rated shows. There’s an on-demand section as well, among many in the large list of free content .

Are free movies sites legal?

Some are and some aren’t. It is up to you as the consumer to do your due diligence before subscribing to a service. Most reputable companies will have an “About” section at the bottom of its website where you can investigate the parent company or legality of a company.

Here are some ways to tell if a streaming website is legal:

  • Any website that asks you to download something suspicious or enter in your private information to watch a free movie can be a red flag. You also should never have to install a VPN to watch movies.
  • Being able to download movies and save them to your computer is another red flag.
  • Also, any legit movie website won’t look like it was made in 1998 and have extremely poor picture quality.
  • If you’re being bombarded with pop-up ads, it’s most likely that the streams are illegal.

Do I need an account to watch on free movie websites?

Just about all free streaming websites are going to require an email address, your birthday, gender identification, and a confirmation of that email address.

Will there be ads while I watch movies?

Yes, most free streaming websites will contain ads to help pay for the service. Although the website may be free to users, they still need to pay for the content by making money through ads.

You can download an Ad Blocker to avoid some of the commercials but they may not completely work to block every single ad . You’ll likely still see fewer ads than if you didn’t have an ad blocker, though. However, if you don’t want to download an ad blocker, putting up with some ads is a small inconvenience for something that’s being provided at no additional cost to you.

There’s no limit to the number of devices you can connect simultaneously with PIA. A no-logs provider, PIA provides around-the-clock support via live chat as well as email.

Movie sites at school FAQS

Can i use a free vpn to unblock movie sites at school.

Although there are some free VPNs available that you can trust, it’s important to remember that the vast majority of free services are incredibly insecure . Free VPNs have been known to lack reliable encryption, follow dodgy data practices, and have apps that suffer vulnerabilities or contain malicious code. As a result, free VPNs are not suitable for gaining online privacy.

In addition, free VPNs are often slow or have data caps that make them unsuitable for accessing streaming services, torrenting, or gaming. In case you’re worried about wasting your precious cash, the money back guarantees offered by the VPNs on this list will allow you to try a full, unrestricted VPN with robust security.

Can a VPN hide my web history from my university?

Yes. The encrypted tunnel provided by a reliable VPN service is designed to guarantee online privacy. Furthermore, a VPN proxies your DNS requests, making it impossible for your school to track your web history.

However, please remember that whenever you use a computer that belongs to the university, your history may accumulate on that device. Therefore, it’s important to use private browsing mode along with a reputable VPN to ensure you don’t leave any data in the browser itself.

Where to Watch Free Movies Online: 12 Best Places

Whether you enjoy comedies, mysteries, documentaries or something else entirely, you can find a great selection of movies you can stream online for free.

In this article, I’ll take a look at 12 of the best movie websites and resources for watching free movies online. I’ve visited each of the websites listed below, and I’ve tested a few videos from each to ensure quality, check for ads and see what’s available at no charge.

This article was updated in January 2024 and I review it every three months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here .

Where To Watch Free Movies Online

When you start looking for free movies online, it won’t be long before you start coming across less-than-reputable websites. Some may require paid memberships or subscriptions while others provide access to pirated content. But there are several websites, apps and streaming services that you can use to watch movies and TV shows legally and completely free . Among them are Crackle, The Roku Channel, Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV), Tub i and Vudu.

If you’re looking for a full list of free ways to watch movies that you’d normall y have to pay for, you probably won’t find it on this list. Instead, I’ve compiled 12 completely legal ways to watch free movies online, most of which are ad-supported. Note that “Ad Pain” is rated from low to high based on the length and frequency of advertisements.

If you’re looking for an entirely ad-free experience, be sure to check out Kanopy or Hoopla , which are powered by educational institutions.

But y ou shouldn’t have to download anything or enter any payment information to gain access to the free conten t . At most, you might have to disable your ad blocker if you’re watching online.

Kanopy partners with thousands of public libraries and universities to provide ad-free shows and movies. You can use your library card or school email address to access content on your TV, mobile phone, tablet or online. I entered my library card number and then used my name and email address to create a Kanopy account.

Once you’re signed in, you can watch a certain number of videos per month . The number of available videos per month varies by library. In the top-right corner of the screen, you’ll see a number indicating how many “ tickets ” you have remaining for the month or how many programs you can watch. You can enjoy unlimited plays in the Kanopy Kids section.

In addition to free movies, Kanopy also provides access to free documentaries on culture, the arts, business, education, global studies, health and more. As I scrolled through the selection, I didn’t see many titles I recognized. Still, the vast selection of indie movies, documentaries and world cinema titles was enough to keep me browsing through several pages.

Once you’ve found a film you’d like to watch, you can click on the title for additional information, related titles and comments (which can often include helpful recommendations). Most videos also include ratings, subtitles and transcripts.

Hoopla is the digital service of Midwest Tape , which is a leading provider of entertainment and media to public libraries across North America. You’ll find digital videos (movies and TV shows) as well as music, audiobooks, e-books and more from more than 8,500 libraries.

After you find a title you’re interested in, you can see the movie details and description as well as ratings from other Hoopla users. When you’re ready to check something out, just click “Borrow.” You’ll see a message letting you know how long you’ll have access to the title (typically 2-3 days) and whether it’s available for streaming, downloading or both. The title will be automatically “returned” when it’s due back.

Once you’ve borrowed a movie or show, you can watch it at any time without advertisements. Subtitles are also typically available. In addition to free movies and TV shows, Hoopla also provides access to free audiobooks, e-books, music and more .

There’s something for everyone at Crackle with plenty of featured categories including “Broken Vows,” “Deadtime,” “ Careless, ” “Hats Off to Christmas!” and “My Own Love Song.”

According to the website , running commercials with available programming allows Crackle to ensure that the service remains free.

Before a movie begins, you’ll see a couple of ads. After it starts, you’ll have periodic commercial breaks throughout the film. The video in the screenshot above is one hour and 40 minutes long, and you can see that there are eight advertisement breaks after it begins. During the ad breaks, I had the option to choose whether I wanted to interact with an ad for 30 seconds or watch regular ads for a normal break (around 2.5 minutes).

On your screen below the film, you’ll see options to add it to a watch later list (if you’re logged in to a free account), share it on social media, see details about the film and check out similar recommended films. In addition to the details and description, you’ll also see “Why it Crackles,” which is a short blurb about what Crackle thinks makes the film great.

  • The site provides excellent variety and streaming quality.
  • You can choose how long the ads are.
  • You don’t have to create an account to stream.
  • Some movies and shows are available for only a limited time due to agreements with programming providers.
  • Content can’t be viewed offline.

  • No movies are available directly on Yidio, which means you’ll always have to visit a second website.

Final Thoughts

All of these websites are worth checking out if you’re looking for free movies online.

If you’re looking for popular names in Hollywood and hit TV shows or movies, check out Crackle or Amazon Freevee. If you have a library card, you can visit Hoopla or Kanopy for a completely ad-free experience . Crunchyroll is a great resource for watching free anime shows and movies, while Tubi and YouTube provide access to a great selection of movies for families and kids.

For Live TV, check out Pluto TV and The Roku Channel. If you’re more interested in independent films and hidden gems, you might find something you’ll enjoy on Popcornflix or Vudu. Finally, if you have a specific title in mind, check Yidio to see if it’s available for free on any of these websites.

No matter where you decide to watch free movies online, just make sure you’re doing it legally and safely . While you may have to disable your ad blocker online or enter your email to create a free account, you shouldn’t have to download anything to your computer or enter any payment information.

How to Unblock Movie Sites at School (Detailed 2024 Guide)

This is an estimated reading time to let you know how long it will take you to read all the content on this particular PrivacySavvy.com page. However, it has a sneak peek, easy guide steps, and/or a quick list providing quick in-page navigations and easily-found answers if desired.

You can unblock your favorite movie sites and other restricted content at school using four simple ways, the best being the VPN.

Students usually want to enjoy their free time at school watching movies and shows online. Unfortunately, school administrations block students’ access to such websites Don’t worry — below steps can help you unblock these movie sites while at school:

  • With a VPN.
  • With a proxy server.
  • Using IP addresses.
  • Use a Tor Browser.

Read our complete article to explore more about why school administrations block users to access any entertainment sites.

Many schools, including universities and colleges, usually block access to certain websites that they suspect of lowering productivity. Movie streaming sites are easy targets for the school’s ICT department.

Fortunately, we have a few hacks you can use to unblock movie sites in school. We strongly recommend using a VPN . The virtual private network keeps your internet traffic and tunnels it into a remote server. So, you access the website with an IP address different from your school’s.

In this guide, we will teach you how to unblock movie websites at school or college.

Top VPNs to unblock movie websites at school – Quick list

  • ExpressVPN : Our top choice VPN for unblocking movie sites at school. It boasts over 3000+ servers worldwide, has robust encryption, and offers a 24/7 support. It also unlocks streaming websites like Hulu, Netflix, and HBO Max.
  • NordVPN : Best professional VPN offering a reliable and comprehensive online security package that brings you a VPN, ad blocking, SmartDNS, and antimalware features. It has more than 5,000 servers worldwide with military-grade encryption.
  • Surfshark : Best budget VPN for accessing blocked school movie sites. It offers 3,000+ servers around the world, with unlimited simultaneous connections.

Why do schools block movie sites?

If some movie websites won’t open on the school’s WiFi, it’s probably because they are blocked. It’s common for you to hit a snug when opening movie websites, especially in American schools. The reasons range from Parental Control to school policies and government censorship.

School internet error when trying to access movie sites

1. Government censorship

Some governments block websites to maintain their grip on the populace. For instance, China, Russia, and some countries in the Middle East block certain websites to weaken political opposition and silence human rights movements .

Sometimes the government restricts sites to protect against copyright infringement, national security, or regulate morality .

2. School Policy

Schools and academic institutions ban some websites from controlling what children can watch. Some high schools and elementary schools enforce the policy as a legal necessity . Others aim to receive internet access and connections discounts through the E-Rate program .

So the school policy outlines the filtering of the internet access to content that is:

  • Harmful to minors
  • Of pornographic nature

3. Geo-blocking

Some movie streaming websites block specific catalogs of libraries in different countries due to corporate agreements .

Movie streaming websites have special libraries for other regions, and you can bypass geo-blocked content with the help of VPNs and proxies.

4. Children’s Internet Protection laws

In 2000, the United States Congress passed the Children’s Internet Protection Act to manage the growing internet space. The law sought to obligate public schools to block all obscenity and adult content from children. Also, schools block platforms deemed to promote abuse and bullying of children.

So, federal legal obligations require schools to block websites and shield children from unsafe websites . They block obscene content or platforms that may make children vulnerable to cyberbullying.

Our comprehensive cyberbullying research studies show that at least one in every five kids experiences harassment on social media and other internet platforms. So schools enforce blocking some websites to protect children on the internet .

Four ways to unblock movie sites at school or college

Watching movies online at school is challenging because most IT departments block sites. But you can use your ISP and not the school WiFi. Or, if the school still blocks its IP address, you can use a VPN .

You can access blocked online content with a VPN , open proxies , and Smart DNS, among others. Here are methods that you can use to bypass all the restrictions .

1. Unblock Netflix and other sites in school with VPN

Here’s a quick way to unblock movies at your school with the help of a VPN service:

  • Choose a robust VPN service provider. We highly recommend you sign up for ExpressVPN because it offers military-grade encryption and is fast enough to stream movies.
  • Download the VPN client and install it onto your device. ExpressVPN has apps compatible with iOS, macOS, Windows, and Android.
  • Log in to your preferred application and select a different server location from your school.
  • Connect the VPN and open your browser to visit your favorite movie websites.

You can then enjoy private and secure streaming of your favorite movies without issues. If your browser has problems, clear the cookies and cache and refresh the page.

2. Unblocking school websites with open proxy

If you want the quickest way to access a movie website , especially when you see a public computer in a school, you can use the proxy website.

A proxy website works as a VPN by hiding your address when visiting a blocked website. No installation is required to fool your school internet administrator about the websites you visit online.

Some proxies have easy extensions for Edge, Firefox, or Chrome browsers. Once you install the extension onto your browser, you can choose a server location and access movie websites at your school for free.

However, there’s a catch! If you decide to use the open proxy method, you must be ready to deal with a few problems.

Some proxies are often the target of Netflix blacklisting . Also, proxies offer less security and privacy than VPNs do. And some of these proxies might even monitor your online activity and sell your data to advertisers like other free online security tools.

3. Using IP addresses instead of URL

In most cases, schools block the URLs instead of the IP addresses of a website. So, if your school has specifically blocked the URL of your preferred movie sites, you can use their respective server’s IP addresses instead to unblock them.

A URL is an IP address to a website, mostly in letters. But, the IP address is a particular sequence of numbers unique to servers hosting the website. You can use and run them on your browser , and they will open up the website for you.

But how can you get the IP address or website hosting service ? Here is a simple method:

If you’re using Windows:

  • Type “ CMD ” in the search bar.
  • Open the command prompt.
  • Now type “ ping ” followed by the name of the website you’d like to unblock (e.g., when you want to open SpaceMov.Site, type: “ ping spacemov.site “)

good movie websites for school

  • Copy the site IP address (188.114.97.7), paste it on your search bar, and run it like a link.
  • Now enjoy unrestricted movie content!

4. Unblock the school internet with the Tor browser

The Tor Browser is a free, open-source anonymity and privacy browser that protects you from online censorship. The browser is primarily standard among Onion Link and dark web users, but you can also use it to unblock movies at school.

Tor browser

The Tor Browser sends your data through an extensive network of volunteer servers. The process hides your actual IP address from the host server of the website you visit and also conceals the IP address of your destination server from your internet service provider.

So, if you use your school WiFi to watch movies on Netflix, neither Netflix nor your school internet admin will track you.

To use the Tor browser, download and install the software and use it as your default browser .

On the downside, the browser might cause a plummet or cause a fluctuation in your connection speed . Some websites might also be entirely blocked.

The danger of using free VPNs to unblock movie sites at school

The internet has hundreds of free VPN software to change your IP address . And yes, a few good free VPN services will do the job right. However, you’d know better than to use a free VPN that might compromise your security and anonymity!

Free VPNs are untrustworthy as they lack any reliable encryption and may inject adware and malicious codes into your device. A few of these services even trade your bandwidth and are extremely slow , thus unsuitable for streaming movies at school!

Free privacy tools have dodgy terms and conditions and lack commitment to your privacy . The service providers are not earning any money for the service, which means they are not fully committed to your privacy either!

Streaming websites quickly notice and blacklist the servers hosting free VPNs’ IP addresses . So, they will not unblock any sensible movie websites.

And, to make enough money to run their service, free VPNs raise revenue by selling your data ! You certainly don’t want to use a security service that gives up your browsing data to the person you’re hiding from!

If you are seriously interested in safeguarding and remaining anonymous online, you’d better use a high-quality premium VPN service.

Paid VPNs are in business and have an established brand name to protect . So, they have an elaborate organization dedicated to keeping their products safe and private and customers happy.

Is it okay to unblock movie websites in school?

Using VPNs and proxies to access information is entirely legal in most Western countries. However, the legality only applies when you don’t involve in any illegal activities such as cybercrime or torrenting copyrighted content .

For instance, if you use ExpressVPN to unblock Netflix in school, you will not break any federal or state laws. You might get in trouble for violating the school’s policies , but not with law enforcement .

But, if you are in a country that is not friendly to the internet, such as China , the Middle East, or North Korea, you should read the laws first. Such countries have strict rules that regulate which content you can access on the internet. The regions are widely referred to as Enemies of the Internet by several Human Rights Watchdogs.

The best VPN service will mask your online activity , so no one will know what you are doing. Neither your school’s internet regulator nor law enforcement will know which websites you visit. A proper VPN will unblock all possible websites on the internet safely and privately!

List of free movie websites not blocked by most schools

Most school students cannot access the most popular website due to blocking. High schools, colleges, and offices use firewalls to block entertainment websites. However, most employees and students would love to catch the latest episodes of their TV show, which is why we offer help.

Here is a list of unblocked movie sites on Google that are free and available for every student. The school’s firewall seldom blocks these websites; you can watch all your favorite movies and TV shows anytime!

  • VMovee : Free movie website with HD quality movies of all genres. The site may have too many ads and popups .
  • Putlocker : Although the original site is blocked on Google, you can use the proxy links to access a sea of movies and TV shows from different genres.
  • PopcornTime : Website with several categories. The app-based movie torrenting website survives school firewall blocking. So, you can watch your favorite anime TV series and other videos.
  • Tubi TV : Tubi TV is a popular portal to stream your movies for free. The site has a registration form that keeps spammers and bots away.
  • Popcornflix : lets you stream and download HD and 4k movies and TV shows. Popcornflix is different from Popcorn Time because the former hosts’ movies on its service while the latter is a torrent website .
  • Vumoo : Houses the latest movies and TV Show episodes for you to stream. Vumoo is like Netflix but for free.
  • Google’s unblocked movie sites : Google has subdomains that allow people to create websites. And because few organizations block the search engine, you can peruse Google sites with a matching website that you can stream in school.
  • Vimeo : In the late 2000s, Vimeo was seen as the next YouTube. Just like YouTube , Vimeo hosts millions of videos, including movies. Watching the content is free, but you may have to pay more to access the “On Demand” section.
  • Viewstar : A free legal unblocked movie website with the latest films, anime series, and TV shows. You have to deal with the pesky ads and popups , though.
  • Hotstar : Home of Bollywood movies. The site has the latest Indian movies, TV series, live sports, and Bollywood events. Hotstar is a legal platform under the laws of India, so you should have no worries.
  • Sony Crackle (Crackle) : Ad-based legal movie platform with hundreds of movie catalogs and thousands of titles. The free movie site is unblocked in many schools and provides a top video resolution.
  • YahooView : The search engine may be aging, but it still has great content. Recently, Yahoo bought Hulu and formed YahooView, an established movie platform with a free and paid version for exclusive titles. The website is unblocked in most schools and colleges.
  • Open Culture: The Open Culture website is a home for short online courses and lessons , but it has movies too . And, because Open Culture is a learning platform, schools and colleges do not block its free movie section.
  • MovieNoLimit : No registrations or restrictions when you watch the latest movies. Create an account to follow your favorite channel or track your watch history.
  • Retrovision.TV: Watch free classic movies and shows, including the latest crime drama, sci-fi horror comedy, or anime.
  • Pluto TV : A premium movie streaming website in the US with almost 100 channels updating the latest films. Catch live the latest news, sports, tech, movies, and TV series.
  • SnagFilms : An unblocked website for watching movies in school with thousands of users.
  • The Roku Channel: Recently, Roku launched the Roku channel where you can watch movies even when you don’t have Roku hardware. The website is not blocked in school, and you’ll enjoy streaming many movies as a student.

What else can my VPN unblock?

School campuses often block their public network, so you cannot access specific applications and movie websites during school hours. But if you can bypass this restriction with the help of a VPN, you get infinite surfing opportunities!

Here are other ways in which you can use a VPN:

  • Opening the Netflix Libraries of other regions.
  • Accessing geo-restricted websites.
  • Unblocking banned VoIP and social media apps and sites.
  • Watching movies on all streaming websites .
  • Opening up the complete catalogs on music service apps .
  • Unblock and watch foreign TV and Movie platforms, e.g., Al Jazeera, SuperSport, HBO Max , BBC iPlayer, etc.
  • Stream HD Content on the airplane.
  • For security: Keep your connection encrypted from snoops and hackers.
  • For online privacy: Hide your identity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) , a government school, and other praying eyes.
  • Fight ISP throttling: Change your IP address so your ISP cannot slow down your connection.
  • Beat censorship: Government-control-be-damned, access all the information on the internet without any state agency knowing it!
  • Book cheaper hotels and air tickets . Some airlines and hotels sell their tickets at lower prices for some regions.
  • Share files and torrent anonymously .

School networks often block popular movie streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

We advise you to use your personal computer and never login any details on a public computer. If you’re using your school computer, install a reputable provider such as ExpressVPN and choose one of the server locations, and your movies will open for you.

You can access a website with your computer without a VPN using a proxy website or the Tor Browser.

No, it is not illegal to unblock sites at school. Yet, accessing copyrighted content without permission is illegal.

Open any blocked sites on Chrome by clearing your cache or changing your settings. Next, check if you have an extension that blocks the specific website in one. You can also access a website specifically blocked on your Chrome browser by using the website’s IP address or mobile version.

Your school’s internet service provider can tell if you connect to their network using a VPN. While using a VPN is legal and does not go against school policies, hiding your online activity may attract unwanted attention. So, we advise you to use

a strong VPN service, like ExpressVPN, that applies robust connection protocols to secure your traffic.

Your school network can block certain VPNs. If your school has blocked VPNs, you may need to try using a proxy server to access censored movie sources. Quality providers like ExpressVPN and NordVPN rarely get caught and thwarted by school firewalls.

Using a VPN or proxy to unblock movie wesites at school risks being caught and facing disciplinary action. Additionally, using a VPN or proxy can slow down your internet connection. Also, opting for a free VPN may not be as secure as choosing a reputable VPN provider.

13 Best Places to Watch Free Movies Online

Tubi and YouTube are the best sites for streaming free full-length movies, but you've got lots of other options

good movie websites for school

  • Emporia State University

good movie websites for school

  • J. Everette Light Career Center
  • Prime Video
  • Favorite Events

Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's free movie streaming service includes tons of well-known films.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for a Variety of Movies: Popcornflix

Jump right into watching free movies on your TV, phone, or computer without even setting up an account.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from dramas and comedies to action and horror films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie websites. This list was last updated in June to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

Most of these sites have a mobile app for watching their movies. Take a look at our list of the best free apps for streaming movies so you can take the films with you wherever you go.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now at Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending On Social — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include We're the Millers, Rush Hour, Night School, I Robot, and Independence Day: Resurgence.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free movies.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies managed directly by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch The Girl on the Mountain and Ava ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: Due Date, The Pilot, Plan A, Open 24 Hours, and She's The Man.

Something you can't get with YouTube but that is supported by most of these movie sites is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

There's a lot to explore here, but I'll get you started with these titles that are some of the more popular choices: Hangman, Safe, Legion, Fantastic Journey to Oz, The Soulmate Search, and MI-5.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Titanic, Karen, Sonic The Hedgehog, Baywatch, The Reading, Seabiscuit , and The Wolf of Wall Street.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix

Includes subtitles.

Has a one-page list of every movie available.

'Continue watching' section.

Can't sort by date or popularity.

Strange site navigation.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme; I've seen Mobster Movies, Based on True Stories, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists Cruel Intentions, Mud, Match Point, The Eternal Daughter , Prozac Nation , and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, European Production, Asia's Top Cinema, LGBTQI+, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most-watched movies are The Hard Ride, The Maid, Baby Girl , and Venus Obscura. Some trending titles over this last month include In Tranzit , The Frame , and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Supports 'resume watching.'

Clearly shows which titles are leaving soon.

Genre lists can't be sorted.

Few unique genres.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include 2 Days in New York, Dead Bodies, Humboldt County, Skin Trade, Lemon, and Bronson.

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Summer Binge-a-Thon , Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Tiger House, Tidal Wave, Eye See You, The Right Kind of Wrong , and Senior Moment.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming device . But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include For Better or Worse, Fools in Love, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Environment, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include God's Own Country, Lady Bird, The Bookshop, and Anomalisa.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

The 50 Best Historical and Educational Films Streaming Now

Great true stories, biopics, and family movies available online and streaming to bring into your home classroom

Emily Gaudette

  • May 15, 2020

When you’re streaming movies at home, it can be tempting to let your eyes glaze over as you watch sitcom reruns or the same animated classics. But streaming platforms include as many classics and educational films as they do popcorn fare. You just have to know where to look.

Here are 50 of the best true stories, biopics, and historical dramas available on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and other streaming services, presented in alphabetical order. All of us can afford to learn something new with the time we’ve been given during the coronavirus pandemic. And if you’re a student or are quarantining with students, watching a significant film to learn a bit more about our world is an intellectual investment. But don’t worry—none of the movies on the list are dry. (Streaming services can drop titles at the end of each month, so it’s possible the availability of these movies will shift over time.)

black and white still from the movie all the president's men

Warner Bros. Inc./Getty Images

All the President’s Men

This 1976 political thriller from director Alan J. Pakula ( Sophie’s Choice, Klute ) casts Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, two Washington Post reporters who investigated the Watergate scandal. Their articles, of course, eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. (Rent on Amazon)

This historical film following Mozart (Tom Hulce) and his artistic rival Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) won the 1984 Best Picture Oscar and is considered by the American Film Institute and United States Film Registry to be one of the greatest movies ever made. From an educational standpoint, Miloš Forman’s ( One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest ) film is a deep dive into the history of opera and classical music and an exploration into what defines a genius. (Rent on Amazon)

Steven Spielberg directed this 1997 historical drama depicting the events that unfolded on the slave ship Amistad in 1839. African men sold into slavery from the Mende tribe of Sierra Leone managed to overthrow their captors, and they were tried in a Supreme Court case in 1841. Djimon Hounsou stars as Cinque, a leader of the rebellion, alongside Anthony Hopkins as congressman and former President John Quincy Adams. (Stream on Hulu)

Tom Hanks stars in Ron Howard’s 1995 dramatization of the ill-fated Apollo 13 lunar mission, which would have ended in a horrific disaster had the spacecraft’s crew not been able to work with NASA scientists on Earth to engineer an insane solution to get the crew home. (Stream on Hulu)

Much like the historical drama Girl With a Pearl Earring (also a good educational home-watch!), the 2013 film Belle is a slightly editorialized dramatization of a classic painting. In this case, the portrait of Dido Elizabeth Belle, a girl of mixed race who grew up on the estate of her great uncle William Murray, the Lord Chief Justice of England in 1779. The film, written by Misan Sagay and directed by Amma Asante, dramatizes the Zong massacre of 1781 and the path to abolition. (Rent on Amazon)

The Best Years of Our Lives

William Wyler’s 1946 post-World War II melodrama, which won a Best Picture Oscar, isn’t a true story, but it is one of the first films devoted to the lives of returning American servicemen, who came back from the war with physical wounds and psychological conditions that challenged them, their families, and their communities. The film’s depiction of PTSD was way ahead of its time. (Rent on Amazon)

This 2005 drama features an unforgettable performance from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor playing author Truman Capote. The film illuminates several subjects in literature and American history, ranging from Capote’s development of the now-ubiquitous “non-fiction novel” subgenre with his book In Cold Blood to his complex (and competitive!) partnership with Harper Lee (Catherine Keener). (Free on YouTube)

Dallas Buyers Club

This 2013 drama tells the true story of Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), an AIDS patient who smuggled medication into Texas and illegally distributed it to those suffering from the disease. (Stream on Netflix)

The Death of Stalin

As far as films on this list go, writer-director Armando Iannucci’s 2017 black comedy probably takes the most liberties with its true story, but you’d be hard pressed to find a more cutting (and interesting!) depiction of Soviet Russia in the 1950s. (Stream on Netflix)

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

This 2007 French biographical film directed by Julian Schnabel follows the life of Elle journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), who was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome following a massive stroke in 1995. (Stream on HBO Now)

still from the movie dunkirk

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Director Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war epic tells the true story of the British evacuation of troops from the French beach town of Dunkirk in the early days of World War II, a civilian-led event that saved the lives of hundreds of soldiers. (Rent on Amazon)

The Elephant Man

The real “elephant man”—a 19th century British man who had severe physical disabilities—was named Joseph Merrick, but director David Lynch’s masterpiece refers to him as John Merrick. The significant departures from Merrick’s true story end there. The film was both a critical and commercial success upon its release in 1980, and it cemented Merrick as a permanent fixture in pop culture. Most people have heard someone in their lives quote the film at some point: “I am not an animal!” Yep, comes from this movie. (Rent on Amazon)

Empire of the Sun

Director Steven Spielberg’s World War II drama features a young Christian Bale as J. G. Ballard, who was held as a prisoner of war when he was a boy by Japanese forces. The film is beautifully shot, but most importantly it’s a look at the war from a POV American audiences don’t often see — a child’s. (Ballard would grow up to become an acclaimed novelist, and the movie is based on his memoir.) (Stream on Amazon Prime Video)

Erin Brockovich

Director Steven Soderbergh’s 2000 film dramatizes the legal case of Anderson, et al. v. Pacific Gas and Electric , in which a then-untrained lawyer named Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) sued the gas company for poisoning the drinking water of Hinkley, California. Roberts gives one of the best performances of her career, and it earned her the Oscar for Best Actress. (Stream on Hulu)

A rare biography of an American cultural figure that doesn’t sugarcoat things, director Damien Chazelle’s 2018 film reimagines the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong as a relentless, near-stoic drive off our planet. Portrayed by Ryan Gosling, Armstrong is portrayed as a man meant for one thing only: space exploration. (Stream on Hulu)

still from the movie 42

A pre-Wakandan Chadwick Boseman stars as Jackie Robinson, the first African American player in MLB. This film will satisfy history nuts and sports fans alike—especially during this period where there’s nary a single live game to watch. (Rent on Amazon)

Salma Hayek plays surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, whose contributions to Latinx culture and feminist discourse have been sadly overshadowed in modern pop culture by the Warholian treatment of her face. You’ve almost definitely seen a tote bag or mug with Kahlo’s face on it, but until you’ve seen the film it’s difficult to understand how much torment she fought through to get her work into the world. (Rent on Amazon)

Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman star as fictional members of the real 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the few African American units in the American Civil War. (Free on Crackle)

Good Night, and Good Luck.

George Clooney directed this 2005 black-and-white drama, which is one of the most arresting films to explore McCarthyism—especially because it deals with real events. David Strathairn plays Edward R. Murrow, the CBS journalist who was accused by Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1953 of having ties to Communists. McCarthy was slinging a lot of such accusations at the time, but he met his match in Murrow, who had as much to do with ending the senator’s reign of suspicion and hysteria as anyone. (Rent on Amazon)

The Grapes of Wrath

If the murmurings about a second Great Depression have begun to vex you and your family, consider watching the quintessential film about the most severe economic downturn the United States has ever weathered. Director John Ford’s black-and-white 1940 stunner, based on John Steinbeck’s indelible novel, is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made, and its excellence is most obvious whenever star Henry Fonda is onscreen. (Rent on Amazon)

Hidden Figures

Boasting a talent-stacked trio of lead actresses (Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Taraji P. Henson), this early-1960s period drama tells the story of three African American “human computers”—women who worked at NASA and were instrumental to the launch of the Friendship 7 and other spacecraft that led to landing a man on the moon. (Stream on Hulu)

Hotel Rwanda

Don Cheadle gives a career-defining performance as Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who protected hundreds of Tutsi Rwandans during the Hutu-led genocide of 1994. The film is a horrifying true-life story, made only more disturbing by the depiction of the near-useless United Nations peacekeepers and apparent apathy of Western countries. (Stream on Hulu)

The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing, the genius British cryptanalyst who cracked the apparently uncrackable Nazi intelligence code during World War II. The 2014 film takes some artistic license with Turing’s life, though it won accolades from the Human Rights Campaign for its frank portrayal of Turing’s homosexuality, which turned the war hero into a criminal in postwar England. (Stream on Hulu)

This Hong Kong biographical drama follows the life of Ip Man, the 1930s Wing Chun grandmaster who trained Bruce Lee. (Stream on Netflix)

still from the movie jackie

Pablo Larrain/Why Not Productions

Natalie Portman won critical acclaim for her turn in this 2016 biographical drama following Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination of husband President John F. Kennedy in 1963. (Rent on Amazon)

The Last King of Scotland

Though the relationship between Ugandan leader Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker) and a Scottish doctor (James McAvoy) is fictional, it is Whitaker’s performance as the violent, erratic, and very real General Amin that puts this film on our list. (Stream on Hulu)

good movie websites for school

David James/©2012 DreamWorks II Distribution Co., LLC and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Director Steven Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner focus on a very narrow part of the 16th president’s life—the fight over the passage of the 13th Amendment, which emancipated America’s slaves and banned slavery forever—but it feels like the definitive biopic of Abraham Lincoln. (It’s based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography Team of Rivals. ) Yes, history nuts interested in the Civil War will get what they’re looking for, but it’s Sally Field’s gut-wrenching performance as a grieving Mary Todd Lincoln that’ll ring in your mind for days after you watch. (Rent on Amazon)

This Australian drama stars Dev Patel as Saroo Brierley, a writer adopted out of poverty by Australian parents in the 1980s. Brierley travels back to India, fighting to find his birth parents and discovering the differences between India’s socioeconomic structure and the culture he grew up with. (Free on Vudu; Rent on Amazon)

This romantic drama depicts the American couple behind the 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia , which overrode state laws banning interracial marriage. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga pull at viewers’ heartstrings as Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and black woman who fell in love after knowing each other from childhood. (Stream on Hulu or HBO Now)

Denzel Washington delivers a towering performance, in one of director Spike Lee’s best films, portraying the American Muslim leader and civil rights activist Malcolm X from childhood to his assassination in 1965. This film, which features cameos from black cultural leaders like Bobby Seale and Rev. Al Sharpton, is preserved in the National Film Registry and is based on Malcolm’s autobiography, which was completed by Alex Haley ( Roots ) and published after his death. (Stream on Netflix)

Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots follows the tense long-distance relationship that unfolded between Mary, Queen of Scotland (Saoirse Ronan), and her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Ronan and Robbie simply shine. It's also the rare period drama that casts actors of color in other roles that would otherwise occupied by white performers. (Stream on Hulu or HBO Now)

Director Gus Van Sant’s emotive and delicate biography of San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), the first openly gay elected politician in California, covers, among other subjects, police raids of gay bars in cities across America. It’s one of the most detailed stories about gay American history committed to film. (Stream on Hulu)

The Motorcycle Diaries

This 2004 biopic follows Che Guevara (Gael García Bernal) as a young man in 1952, when he rode a motorcycle across South America with best friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De la Serna). We see the young Guevara become consumed with the lives of rural Indigenous people around the continent. As his understanding of Latinx identity evolves, he’s slowly radicalized by the dream of a better world. (Rent on Amazon)

still from the movie mudbound

Steve Dietl/Netflix

Director Dee Rees’ 2017 film doesn’t adapt a true story. In fact, it’s based on a 2008 novel of the same title, but it’s still a realistic portrayal of racial tensions and post-war strife in 1950s Mississippi. Two young veterans, one black and one white, return home to a rural village that doesn’t see them as equals, though they were trained in combat to work together. (Stream on Netflix)

My Left Foot

A quintessentially Irish story, My Left Foot is the biography of Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis), a painter born with cerebral palsy into an impoverished family of 15. Illuminating in several ways, the film explores the complex journey of a profoundly gifted and physically challenged man while also depicting the lives of working-class Irish people. (Stream on HBO Now)

The New World

This 2005 Terrence Malick film is a way better watch than Disney’s Pocahontas . Though the latter admittedly has a better soundtrack, it takes too many artistic liberties with the story of John Smith and Pocahontas in order to count as educational. The New World , however, stars Colin Farrell and then-newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher as the ill-fated historical couple. (Free on Vudu)

BPM (Beats Per Minute)

This 2017 film follows the political activism of queer rights group ACT UP Paris in the 1990s. While telling the stories of young people frightened into hiding by the spread of HIV, the film also dramatizes the cultural shift in Pride parades, which became more celebratory in the years leading up to the new millennium. (Stream on Hulu)

still from the movie the post

Niko Tavernise/Twentieth Century Fox

Director Steven Spielberg’s 2017 historical drama is another visit into the Washington Post newsroom, this time during the First Amendment crisis over the publication of the Pentagon Papers. (The documents, illicitly copied by whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, tracked the history of the Vietnam War from 1945 – 1967 and showed the government knew it was an unwinnable conflict.) And rather than focusing on reporters, The Post follows legendary Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) and equally legendary publisher Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep). Oddly enough, this is the first time the two megastars appeared on screen together. (Rent on Amazon)

The Pianist

Adrien Brody plays Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman in director Roman Polanski’s celebrated World War II drama. The critically acclaimed 2002 film follows Szpilman as he’s separated from his family in the Warsaw ghetto and then tries to evade capture by ruthless Nazi death squads. The film includes one of the most powerful moments in 21 st -century cinema: a long, uninterrupted shot of Szpilman, who ventures out of hiding for the first time, weeping as he walks alone through the streets of a decimated Warsaw. (Stream on Netflix)

Schindler’s List

Director Steven Spielberg’s landmark drama tells the story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German businessman who saved more than a thousand Jewish refugees from Nazi genocide. Spielberg’s film is unrelenting and powerful, thanks in part to it being shot in black-and-white and filmed as if it were a documentary .

Atsushi Nishijima/©2014 Paramount Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

Ava DuVernay’s 2014 civil rights drama skyrocketed the director to fame. Given the film’s confident and delicate framing of the Selma to Montgomery marches by African Americans demanding the right to vote, it’s easy to see why. The Southern Poverty Law Center and other social justice groups released an educational guide for anyone streaming at home. (Rent on Amazon)

Seven Samurai

Considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time, 1954’s Seven Samurai was cowritten, edited, and directed by Japanese visionary Akira Kurosawa. The drama is set in Japan’s Sengoku period and dramatizes the lives of rōnin, or samurai with no masters. (It has also inspired numerous other classics, from the western The Magnificent Seven to a little-known arthouse fantasy called Star Wars .) (Rent on Amazon)

Kerry Brown/Paramount Pictures

Director Martin Scorsese spent decades trying to make this historical epic, an adaptation of a novel by Japanese writer Shūsaku Endō. It follows Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson as 17th century Jesuit missionaries in Japan as they find their faiths (and fates) challenged by a society that doesn’t look kindly on their religion. (Free on Crackle)

The Social Network

Director David Fincher’s 2010 film dramatizing Mark Zuckerberg’s cofounding of Facebook has become increasingly relevant in the decade since its release. The film opens on a young, lonely Zuck (Jesse Eisenberg) at Harvard as he develops the digital prototype that would soon balloon into the social media behemoth and global phenomenon at the center of fraught debates regarding privacy, propaganda, and foreign nations tampering with American elections. (Stream on Netflix)

A must-watch for any aspiring journalist, this 2015 drama won Best Picture for its tense portrayal of the Boston Globe ’s venerated Spotlight investigative reporting team, played here by Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and Rachel McAdams, among others. The Spotlight team published a series of stories on child abuse and cover-ups in the Roman Catholic Church; their coverage of this scandal won a Pulitzer Prize in 2003 and continue to resonate nearly two decades later. (Rent on Amazon)

The Straight Story

This David Lynch-directed film is a bizarrely inspirational true story about resilience. In 1994, a farmer named Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth, who was nominated for Best Actor) drove from Iowa to Wisconsin on a 5-mph max tractor, just to visit his brother. (Rent on Amazon; stream on Disney+)

The Theory of Everything

A romanticized but still revelatory film about Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Jane (Felicity Jones), whom he met at University of Cambridge before the onset of ALS, which took almost all of the physicist’s motor function. (Stream on Netflix)

To Sir, With Love

Sidney Poitier stars as E. R. Braithwaite, a schoolteacher in the East End of London, a rough neighborhood producing teenage students who are drawn into gang warfare, drug use, and dropping out. The film, which made ripples upon its release in the late 1960s, is based on Braithwaite’s autobiography. (Rent on Amazon)

A biography about the grandfather of modern fantasy that doesn’t actually delve into high fantasy, this film follows J.R.R. Tolkien (Nicholas Hoult) through his impoverished childhood, traumatic experiences in World War I, and the study of linguistics that led to writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings . But it’s not just a story for Middle Earth fans; Tolkien deeply explores privilege and trauma in a way that feels universal. (Stream on Hulu or HBO Now)

12 Years a Slave

Director Steve McQueen’s highly celebrated 2013 film dramatizes the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, a New Yorker and African American man who was kidnapped by con men in 1841, transported across the Mason-Dixon line, and forced in slavery in Louisiana. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Northup, opposite Lupita Nyong’o in her breakout (and Oscar-winning) role as Patsey, another enslaved American living on the plantation. (Rent on Amazon)

Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

[Updated: 6/4/24] Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

30 Best Classroom Appropriate Movies for Middle Schoolers

30 best classroom appropriate movies for middle schoolers

Showing a movie in class can be a great option when you’re ending a unit, needing a day between units, having to put together an impromptu sub-plan, or simply wanting to present a text in a different format to include visual and media literacy.

Pop culture has a place in middle school classrooms when it is used thoughtfully. These 30 movie suggestions have been compiled with a focus on including options that could be tied to social and emotional learning (SEL) as well as your middle school ELA curriculum.

You know your students best, so I definitely encourage you to preview any top-choice movies to ensure they’re a good choice for you and your demographics. You can even sign up for a free educator account at Common Sense Media for reviews and input about a variety of media texts, including many of the movies listed below!

To help you quickly find what you need, I’ve broken down the 30 recommended movies for middle schoolers into the following categories (click the link to quickly jump to a specific category!):

  • Based on a Novel
  • Based on a True Story
  • Documentaries
  • Animated Options
  • Timeless Classics

Classroom Movie Category #1: Based on A Novel

classroom appropriate movies for middle schoolers based on a novel

Ah, every ELA teacher’s favorite category: movies based on novels. They are perfect opportunities to compare and contrast, wrap things up with a bowl of popcorn, tackle that pesky “two versions of the same text” standard, you name it. Here are my favorite movies for middle schoolers based on novels.

  • Enola Holmes PG-13 (2020) 123 mins – This is A Sherlock Holmes mystery, but with his younger sister Enola as the protagonist. When Enola’s mother disappears, she sets out to solve the mystery, only to be caught up in another adventure at the same time. There is a sequel, but this original is the better of the two!
  • Wonder PG (2017) 113 mins – The coming-of-age story of a boy with facial differences who moves from homeschooling to a local elementary school to start grade 5. August “Auggie” Pullman, while initially teased and ostracized, eventually gains allies and friends, which leads to a happy ending.
  • Holes PG (2003) 120 mins – Stanley Yelnats is sent to a juvenile detention boot camp in the Texas desert, where he and others dig holes all day. The film includes two flashback plot sequences that help tell the real-life story of why they are digging holes. This is one of my favorite novel studies for 6th grade, so I love to finish it with a good movie .
  • T he Giver PG-13 (2014) 94 mins – In this futuristic, supposedly-utopian, society, when people turn 16 they’re assigned a role. Jonas becomes the Receiver of Memory, who experiences all the pain so the community doesn’t have to. However, as a result of the role, Jonas becomes more aware of the downside of this utopian community.
  • City of Ember PG (2008) 95 mins – In a post-apocalyptic world two teens, Lina and Doon, need to solve clues to save Ember, the underground city where they live. An animated image of a small, cute, pink unicorn with a curly silver mane sitting on a stool in a recording studio.

By Dina Gachman

‘Thelma the Unicorn’

Watch it on Netflix.

Thelma (voiced by the powerhouse singer Brittany Howard) is a plain old donkey who works on a farm all day and sings with her Rusty Buckets bandmates, Otis (Will Forte) and Reggie (Jon Heder from “Napoleon Dynamite”), at night. Thelma displays some impressive pipes, but the band doesn’t make it far in the Sparklepalooza talent search because it just doesn’t have that it factor. Thelma’s nemesis, pop star Nikki Narwhal (Ally Dixon), is set on keeping Thelma out of the spotlight, but when some sparkly pink paint spills on Thelma and a carrot becomes stuck on her forehead, making her look like a magical unicorn, she’s inspired to ditch her band, pretend to be someone she’s not and make it big.

It’s a story about selling out, losing yourself and finding your way back. There are some genuinely funny moments thanks to the co-writers Jared and Jerusha Hess (the husband and wife team behind “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre”) and the voice talents of Fred Armisen, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson and Zach Galifianakis. It’s based on a children’s book by Aaron Blabey (“The Bad Guys”) and is co-directed by Jared Hess and Lynn Wang. Howard’s mighty voice on songs like “Just as You Are” turns a cute story into a movie that might just make you cry.

On her way home from school one day, Suzume (Nanoka Hara in Japanese and Nichole Sakura in English), a teenager living on the Japanese island of Kyushu, walks past a stranger who says he’s looking for an abandoned door. When Suzume tells this stranger, named Souta (Hokuto Matsumura in Japanese and Josh Keaton in English), to look in some nearby ruins, this fantastical tale — which includes magical portals, mischievous talking cats and a quest to save the world from deadly earthquakes — is set in motion.

Suzume lost her mother years before and has been raised by an aunt. The director Makoto Shinkai (“Weathering With You,” “Your Name.”) also wrote the story, which hits on themes of grief and growing up, but there is also plenty of humor. When Souta is transformed into a talking wooden chair, there are moments of physical comedy that are silly and also surprisingly touching. It’s a visually gorgeous and emotionally striking film that will captivate children of all ages and young teenagers (and parents, too).

The bizarre true story behind netflix’s ‘tell them you love me’—where is anna stubblefield now.

Tell Them You Love Me on Netflix.

Netflix’s newest true crime documentary, Tell Them You Love Me, is currently the No. 2 movie on the streaming platform. While watching the film, you might have questions about what happened in real life, including where Anna Stubblefield is now .

Directed by Nick August-Perna, Netflix’s Tell Them You Love Me delves into the controversial relationship between a white, abled professor and a nonverbal Black man with cerebral palsy, which led to a “nation-wide debate over power dynamics, disability, and race” after the man’s said that he couldn’t give consent, according to Netflix’s Tudum .

The documentary centers on whether Johnson, who is nonverbal, could communicate through FC communication and give consent. The court initially answered “no” to the question of consent and Anna Stubblefield was sentenced to two, 12-year terms in 2015. That didn’t mark the end of the strange case — the professor’s initial conviction was overturned, and she was released after two years after pleading to a lesser sentence.

Tell Them You Love Me centers on first-hand testimony from Stubblefield, Johnson’s family members, FC expert Howard Shane, and disabled anthropologist and professor Devva Kasnitz to tell the story of what happened.

How Did Anna Stubblefield and Derrick Johnson Meet?

Derrick Johnson and his brother, John Johnson

Anna Stubblefield and Derrick Johnson crossed paths in 2009 through his brother, John Johnson. John was a PhD student at Rutgers University and took Stubblefield’s philosophy and disability studies class. After class, he approached the professor to learn more about facilitated communication, a technique Stubblefield was familiar with after watching her mother use it for 20 years.

After speaking with D.J.’s mother, Daisy Johnson, the married ethics professor offered to facilitate D.J. herself. “She was gonna move mountains, and I accepted her at her word,” Daisy says in Tell Them You Love Me.

What Is FC Communication?

FC communication is an assisted typing technique where a facilitator physically supports a person’s hand or arm as they point to letters on a page or keyboard, spelling out words. However, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) describes FC communication as “a discredited technique that should not be used.” The association says that there is “extensive scientific evidence” that “messages are authored by the “facilitator” rather than the person with a disability.”

Stubblefield said that she successfully taught D.J. how to communicate through FC, and with her assistance, he began taking a university class. The professor claimed that Johnson was an intellectual trapped in a body that could not communicate.

But just five years before, a clinical psychologist named Wayne Tillman evaluated D.J. and found that he couldn’t carry out basic, pre-school level tasks. Tillman said that his “comprehension seemed to be quite limited,” “his attention span was very short,” and he “lacks the cognitive capacity to understand and participate in decisions,” according to The New York Times .

Derrick was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus after suffering multiple seizures as an infant. He learned how to walk after attending a day program and participating in his family’s daily routine. In the documentary, John says that while D.J. was “there” and expressed emotions like feeling happy or frustrated, he never had a formal education.

What Happened Between Anna Stubblefield And Derrick Johnson?

Anna Stubblefield

With Stubblefield’s help, Derrick progressed rapidly with FC — although his success only occurred when the professor, and not his mother or brother, was facilitating. D.J. became more interested in his studies; he enrolled in an African American Literature course and attended FC conferences with Stubblefield, who shared statements he had allegedly written.

‘‘The right to communication is the right to hope,’’ one essay said, per The New York Times. ‘‘I am jumping for joy knowing I can talk, but don’t minimize how humiliating it can be to know people jump to the conclusion I am mentally disabled.’’

At the same time, red flags started to emerge. Stubblefield said that Derrick preferred classical music to the gospel station they were listening to in the car. She also said he liked red wine more than beer, wanted to be a vegetarian, and hoped to move out of his mother’s house, according to Time.com . Daisy started to get suspicious, as her “alleged” son’s words sounded “very much of what she [Anna] liked but not what [D.J.] liked.’’

Stubblefield, who was married at the time, claimed that she and D.J. fell in love and she planned to leave her husband for him. She later testified that her feelings for him developed gradually. ‘‘I became aware of things when he wrote the essay. It wasn’t all that original — people who had had the same experience had said similar things — but with all the spelling mistakes, he had a way of putting things.’’

Stubblefield also revealed that the two had engaged in a “consensual” sexual relationship. Daisy, knowing that her son couldn’t engage in physical or emotional intimacy, reported Stubblefield to the police. The last time Daisy spoke with Anna in August, their phone call was recorded, and detectives listened on the other line.

‘Yes, [D.J.] wanted to be physically involved with me, and I wanted to be physically involved with him,’’ Anna said on the call. “Our relationship is not just about or primarily about the sex part. We love each other very, very, very much, and I wouldn’t have sex with somebody that I didn’t love.”

Who Was Anna Stubblefield Husband?

Anna Stubblefield married Roger Stubblefield, a tuba player for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The couple married in June 1989 and welcomed a son and daughter a few years later. According to The New York Times, the family was living in their upscale West Orange, N.J. home when Anna started falling in love with D.J.

Anna opened up about her relationship with Roger later in court. ‘‘The marriage wasn’t great,” she admitted, “but I wasn’t at a state of wanting imminently to end it.’’ She testified that it came down to a choice of whether she wanted to hurt Roger or D.J. ‘‘There wasn’t any choice. I wasn’t going to hurt [D.J.].’’

In testimony at a pretrial hearing, Roger said he realized his marriage was in trouble when ‘‘the prosecutors came and banged down the door.’’ The couple still went marriage counseling, and he said the therapist’s first words were, ‘Anna, you must stop dwelling on this relationship with [D.J.].’”

What Happened In Anna Stubblefield’s Trial?

In 2013, Stubblefield was charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault. Because FC was not recognized by science, the court ruled that “no evidence related to FC would be considered,” per Netflix. In 2015, the jury found Anna guilty on both counts, and she was sentenced to two, 12 years terms in prison.

Two years later, Stubblefield’s verdict was overturned by a New Jersey state appellate court in 2017. According to Slate , the three-judge panel ruled that the judge in Stubblefield’s original trial “unfairly excluded evidence related to the man’s capacity to give consent” and granted her a new trial with a new judge. Anna accepted a plea deal, pleaded guilty to criminal sexual contact, and was sentenced to time served.

Where Is Anna Stubblefield Now?

Anna Stubblefield was released from prison and lives out of the public eye. She has not seen Derrick Johnson since 2011. Meanwhile, D.J. still lives with his mother and spends time with his brother John and the rest of their family. He does not use facilitated communication anymore.

Tell Them You Love Me is streaming on Netflix.

Bella Hadid Wears the Naked Dress to End All Naked Dresses

By Hannah Jackson

Anthony Vaccarello finally figured out how to reproduce his collection of ultra-sheer pantyhose dresses. Bella Hadid hit Cannes in look seven from the Saint Laurent fall 2024 show: a halter dress featuring 10 denier hosiery cups, a knotted pantyhose bodice, and a below-the-knee skirt with a control top hemline.

Hadid, styled by Molly Dickson, leaned into the Old Hollywood glamour that has become synonymous with the Cannes Film Festival, adding a pair of mahogany peep-toe ankle strap heels and an enormous pair of drop earrings from Chopard.

Image may contain Bella Hadid Clothing Formal Wear Suit Person Adult Footwear Shoe Accessories Glasses and Dress

This look fits into Hadid’s latest sartorial M.O. of sheer earthy tones that can only be described as “sexy nymph.” While promoting her fragrance, Orebella, in New York, the model wore a diaphanous nude Dior slip dress by John Galliano, as well as a cream-colored Rokh dress with a lace bodice. And yesterday in Cannes, she further explored brown tones in a simple tank dress . But this look—with only some extremely well-placed seams preserving her modesty—is by far her boldest to date.

When asked about how he would manufacture these ephemeral pieces from the collection, Vaccarello told Vogue, “Don’t even ask me about production—I can’t tell you.” This being the first instance the delicate outfits have been spotted on the red carpet speaks to Hadid’s risk-taking style. Even if she is the only person who ever wears one of these sheer Saint Laurent looks out in the world (let’s see if she can make it to the end of the night without any snags) the fact that Vaccarello was readily willing to make one for her speaks to Hadid’s immense power in the fashion industry.

And if this is Hadid’s wardrobe for her first official day of events in Cannes? We can only imagine what’s to come.
