  • NEW EVENT : Introduction to Marketing Concepts will be an individual, objective test event for 9 th and 10 th .
  • MODIFICATION: 3-D Animation will be renamed Digital Animation and competitors will be able to submit their projects in any digital format (2-D or 3-D) they wish.
  • MODIFICATION: Introduction to Public Speaking and Public Speaking will now have a different topic posted each year from which the speech must be developed.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE: The cover and table of contents do not count toward the 15-page limit for reports.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE: The FBLA score sheets will be modified to include a “score range” for the descriptors of each expectation item.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE: Time penalties will be eliminated from all events, and timers will stop students from continuing once their allotted time has elapsed.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE: Permanently move to have all team event objective tests taken individually by each team member.  The scores of all team members will be averaged to determine the average team score.  Any team member who does not sign in and take the test will be removed from the team and prevented from advancing to final round competition.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE: Members may compete in an event at NLC more than once if they have not previously placed in the top ten of that event at NLC.  If a member places in the top ten of an event at NLC, they are no longer eligible to compete in that event.  This eliminates the exceptions for team events that were previously in place, as this change will now affect all events.
  • PROCEDURAL CHANGE:  Pilot a digital badging policy to give recognition to members who earn a proficient level (level to be determined) on objective tests.

Updates to FBLA High School Rating Sheets

Rating Sheets are currently being updated from a single point-entry option to a sliding scale, and all time penalties are being removed. Any rating sheets that require content changes to specific line items will be denoted in additional announcements as needed.

Washington FBLA is developing the next generation of ethical business leaders

Future business leaders of america.

Washington FBLA is committed to preparing today’s middle and high school students to become the business and community leaders of tomorrow. Over 5,000 students from 160 chapters around the state participate in events, conferences, and competitions.

Students gain critical business skills, complete community service projects, network with businesses, and learn the leadership skills that are in high demand in the workplace.

“ I can say with 100% certainty that my entire collegiate and professional trajectory was changed by my involvement in FBLA. Not only did I learn 21st century skills that would benefit me in the workplace such as teamwork and critical thinking, but I also recognized the importance of servant leadership being at the heart of everything we do. This realization is what ultimately led me to find success in college and my place as a Teach for America Corps Member in San Antonio, Texas. My experiences in FBLA and the confidence that I gained through my involvement is never far from my mind in my daily interactions with my students. Everyone – regardless of their background – deserves to have a transformative CTSO opportunity like I did.

Caitlyn Park

News release

The William S. Hart Union High School District announced that Caitlyn Park, a senior at Saugus High School, has been named a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

This prestigious recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students and reflects Park’s exceptional academic achievement and dedication to career and technical education, according to a news release from the Hart district.

Park is among a select group of high school seniors across the country chosen for this singular honor, the release said.

The program recognizes outstanding students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and commitment to public service. Park is one of nine Presidential Scholars from the state of California and one of only 20 scholars selected nationwide for career technical education. She is part of the CTE Computer Science Pathway at Saugus and is being recognized for her involvement in Future Business Leaders of America.

“Caitlyn is a truly remarkable student who consistently impresses with her talent, dedication, and passion for FBLA,” district Superintendent Mike Kuhlman said in the release. “She exemplifies the incredible potential that CTE programs offer to prepare students for fulfilling careers and contribute meaningfully to our society.”

Park is the founder and president of the Saugus High School FBLA chapter. She has served as the Gold Coast Region public relations officer, the National Western Region media director, Gold Coast Region president, and California state vice president. In these leadership roles, she collaborates with other regional and state officers across California to organize statewide professional development opportunities, which include business conferences, workshops and seminars.

“Being selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar is more than just a personal achievement for me; it highlights the Hart district’s commitment to fostering student success at a professional level and reflects the innovative and excellent educational culture of the Saugus community,” Park said in the release. “I am proud to represent the FBLA organization that has cultivated me into a confident leader, and I look forward to continuing carrying the FBLA values of service, education and progress with me as I enter the next chapter of my life. I plan to study international relations at Stanford University and thank all my teachers for the pivotal role they have played throughout my educational journey.”

In addition to Park’s recognition, the district also announced that Dawn Herbert, Saugus High School CTE business and computer science teacher and FBLA advisor, has been named a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Distinguished Teacher.

This distinction acknowledges Herbert’s exceptional leadership and commitment to fostering a vibrant learning environment that empowers students to excel in CTE, the district’s release said, adding, “She has played a pivotal role in Caitlyn’s success, and this recognition reflects the dedication of our entire CTE faculty in guiding and inspiring future generations.”

Bowman celebrates poets and artists By Habeba Mostafa Signal Staff Writer One by one, students mustered the courage and came up to the podium at Bowman High School to read aloud a poem from “The Redemption of You” — a collection of their own poems. Marking Bowman High School’s 31st annual Day of the Artist and Poet festival on Wednesday, the front lawn welcomed attendees with not only live musical performances and poetry recitation, but also art projects created throughout the year by the school’s creative writing, art and music students. The anthology is composed of creative writing pieces, compiled by teacher Michael Mansfield. “Every story of redemption is a story of hope and struggle. Through our hardest times, we discover things about ourselves that we never knew …. Any student at Bowman High School can tell you they know all too well about redemption and second chances,” Mansfield wrote in the book’s introduction. Over 180 pages, this year’s anthology saw the most poetry submissions in the high school’s history. “This is actually a landmark year for us. This is the largest volume of poetry ever produced, it’s 182 pages of poems by leaps and bounds,” Mansfield said to the crowd. “It’s a record breaker, and it’s been a record-breaking year for us as well in the poetry program. It’s really impressive the talent that’s coming up here and we’re really happy to share it.” For first-year Bowman 11th and 12th grade art teacher Olivia Hondrogiannis, who was experiencing the festival for the first time, impressed is an understatement. “The art here today is a selection of things we did throughout the year. We did paper mache. Students designed an animal that they chose parts from other animals. We did Sacred Hearts, that was a painting with a combination of the clay heart — and was inspired by either a passion or a quote or something they’re devoted to,” Hondrogiannis said. Hondrogiannis takes pride in knowing that the students are taking the initiative to not only express themselves creatively, but with others, as well. “As far as the creative writing class goes, that’s all Mike Mansfield. I don’t know how he gets his kids to come up and read their poems. He’s a great motivator for these kids,” Hondrogiannis said. “It’s really exciting to see all the kids’ work and to let them have their parents and friends come see it.” Senior Kevin Matias, 18, reflected on his art throughout the year, and how Hondrogiannis inspired him and his peers to create. “I describe myself as an artist. I like creating stuff. I like putting what’s in my head onto paper. I like that our teacher’s very helpful and passionate about her job,” Matias said. “Everybody likes to communicate with each other, and when it's time to get work done, we get work done.” Matias’ favorite thing to create was a scratch board, using photos of a classic car and a rapper as reference photos. While the academic year, and overall high school experience, is concluding, Matias can envision a future in art. “I see myself doing art in the future, where it be designing a logo, or doing something to help advertise,” Matias said. “It’s amazing having my work presented today. I feel special because I get to show what I did in class and what I liked doing. Bowman is great.”

Netflix ad-supported tier has 40 million monthly users, nearly double previous count

Signage outside the Netflix Inc. office building on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles

Netflix ’s cheaper, ad-supported tier has amassed 40 million global monthly active users, the company said Wednesday.

That’s nearly double the 23 million figure the streaming giant shared in January.

Separately, Netflix announced it would launch its own advertising platform and no longer  partner with Microsoft  for that technology. The tech giant will remain a programmatic advertising partner.

Netflix introduced the ad-supported plan in November 2022 as part of a wider effort to drive revenue  amid slowing subscriber growth . That strategy included last year’s  password-sharing crackdown .

The company said Wednesday that 40% of all signups in countries that have the ad tier available are for that cheaper plan. Netflix now has 270 million total subscribers.

The monthly active ad-tier user figures come just a month after Netflix told investors it would no longer be providing quarterly subscriber number updates. The company said at the time that it was generating substantial profit and free cash flow and that its membership numbers were not the only factor in the company’s growth. It said the metric lost significance after it started to offer multiple price points for memberships.

The surge in ad-tier users comes as linear TV audiences shrink and traditional media companies seek to gain a foothold in the streaming realm. Netflix has established itself as the leader in the segment as many other companies struggle to make their streaming platforms profitable.

Key competitors have far fewer subscribers than Netflix does. In its first-quarter earnings report, Comcast said its streaming platform Peacock had 34 million subscribers.

Bob Iger reveals Disney's new plan for Marvel: quality over quantity

  • Disney CEO Bob Iger plans to cut back on the number of Marvel films and TV shows released each year.
  • The decision comes after a number of Marvel films underperformed at the box office.
  • The only MCU film that will be released this year is " Deadpool & Wolverine."

Insider Today

Disney CEO Bob Iger's turn-around tour continues, and he let us in on the plan for what is arguably the House of Mouse's most successful IP: Marvel.

In Disney's first earnings call since successfully fending off a proxy battle from Nelson Peltz and its former Marvel Entertainment chairman Ike Perlmutter, Iger spoke about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is now looking to release about two or three Marvel films and two Marvel television series a year rather than around four of each.

"I've been working hard with the studio to reduce output and focus more on quality," Iger said on the call.

Related stories

As it undergoes a sort of reset, the only MCU movie that's slated for release this year is "Deadpool & Wolverine" in July. "Echo," "X-Men '97," and "Agatha" will be this year's television releases. The next Avengers film, "Avengers 5," is scheduled for 2026.

The CEO has not been shy about his thoughts on the diminishing quality of Marvel films and television shows — something he has blamed mostly on his short-lived successor, Bob Chapek, even though Iger was in charge when several recent projects were developed.

"Some of what is coming up is a vestige of basically a desire in the past to increase volume," he said on the call.

Between 2021 and 2023, Marvel released 10 feature films and 13 TV series, including two specials, which appears to have left superhero fans fatigued .

MCU movies , which were once fail-safe productions, have struggled recently. Last year's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" grossed less than $500 million globally on a combined production and marketing budget of over $300 million — meaning it failed to break even at the box office. ( Typically, a movie must make back double its budget for the studio to reap a profit.) "The Marvels" fared even worse, grossing only $206 million worldwide on a budget exceeding $270 million. Both films received poor reviews .

"I'm mindful of the fact that our performance, from a quality perspective, wasn't up to the standards we set for ourselves," Iger said on an earnings call last year.

Disney's stock is down about 10% today.
