There are lots of things to think about when writing a paper about a famous person from history. Your teacher may have given you this assignment with exact instructions on who to write about and what information to include, or they may have just asked you to write about someone from history that you admire without telling you exactly what information to include. When writing the essay, take your time and rely on good information that you have collected from books and respected internet resources. Don’t underestimate the time you will need to edit your essay in order to have a final product that you can feel proud of.

Preparing to Write Your Essay

Should you choose your person or has one been assigned?
Does your teacher want you to use a citation style? For example, they may want you to use the MLA format or maybe they want you to use Chicago Style. On this page, you should include all of the different websites, books, and/or magazines that you used to write the essay.
Is there a word limit? Does your teacher require a specific font or font size? Should you double-space the essay? If you're not sure, ask you teacher.

Step 2 Choose a person that did a lot in their life.

Try to think about the things you know the person has done. Did they live a pretty normal life, but did one really cool thing? A person who was more or less “normal” could be harder to write about if your teacher wants a ten page essay. For example, although Adolf Hitler was not in any way an admirable human being, writing a historical essay about his life would be pretty easy because he did a lot of different things.
On the other hand, if there is a historical figure you are really interested in, you will have a good time researching and writing about your person whether they led very busy lives or not. The most important thing is to choose someone you find fascinating. Try making a list of your hobbies and interests and then run a Google search to find famous people who also had one of these hobbies or interests.
3 Brainstorm a list of questions. Write down all of the questions you want to answer about your person. If your teacher told you what questions to answer, then use those. If your teacher did not, then this is up to you. Make sure you talk about when and where they were born, whether they had a good childhood or not, what makes them special and interesting, what they accomplished (whether good or bad), and why you find them interesting. Step 4 Research the questions you want to answer in your essay.

Write down anything you find interesting and want to include. At the same time that you do this, write down the source of that information. For example, the name and author of the book or the address of the website.
If you are having a hard time finding information about your person in the library, ask the librarian to help you search. They’re there to help you, and may have ways of finding information that you hadn’t thought of. Plus, if you find the information through the library, there is a better chance that you will find high quality information.
Make sure that you understand what is considered an acceptable source of information by your teacher. For example, some teachers may consider it OK to use websites such as Wikipedia, while other teachers may not. If you’re not sure, just ask them.
Try to include at least one primary source that was written by the person you are researching, such as a letter, journal entry, or speech. This will help you get to know the person better than you would by only using secondary sources, such as articles and textbooks.

Write your outline so that the information is in the same order that it will be in in the paper. For example, don't put questions about how the person died before the questions about where they were born and who their parents were.

Don’t plagiarize though! If you copy someone else's work without giving them credit for their work, this is called plagiarism. If you do find something interesting that you want to include, be sure to give credit to that person. Plagiarism is a big deal, so it’s best to learn early that it isn’t worth the risk.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Start with the body of the essay.

In the body, you will write about all of the information that you found when you were researching. It is the part of the paper where you answer any and all questions you have come up with.
Your essay will be more clear if you separate different parts of this person’s life into paragraphs. For example, the first paragraph might start out by explaining when, where, and to whom this person was born. In this paragraph you might talk about what kind of childhood this person had, and whether they had any big experiences that made them into the person they were.
In later paragraphs, you can talk about what the person did that made them famous. You might also want to include interesting things that you found about this person’s personal life. For example, whether or not they got married or whether or not they suffered from any mental disorders.

Don't write more than one or two paragraphs for your conclusion. It should simply go over what you have written in the body about who this person was and why they were interesting and important.
For example, you might write, “In summary, Martin Luther King Jr. was a driven man who, although his life was tragically cut short, accomplished amazing things in his life. Though his upbringing presented many challenges, he went on to become a great man who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed in.”
In the next paragraph, you can summarize what you wrote about why you find him so interesting. For example, “This great man inspires me every time I read about him. I hope that I too can stand up for the right thing if I am ever in a position to do so, even if it is difficult or scary to do so.”

Step 3 Finish your first draft by writing the introduction.

For example, you can say, “In this essay, I will be discussing a man that nearly everyone has heard of. He was a minister who became famous during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s for standing up for the rights of not only African Americans, but for all human beings.”
After you introduce your person, you will state what you will be telling your reader about this person. For example, “In this essay, Martin Luther King Jr.’s life will be discussed beginning with his birth in Georgia, to his travels to Germany where he officially began to be known as ‘Martin,’ to his untimely death in 1968.”
Don’t give everything away in the introduction. Think of the introduction like a movie preview. You want to give enough information to get the reader interested, but not so much information that they will already know everything else written in the essay before they read it.

Don’t expect the second draft to come out perfectly either. The purpose of the second draft is to fix up any major spelling mistakes or grammar errors, and to see how you feel about the information you’ve written now that it’s all out there.
A second draft is what you will give to anyone who has offered to proof read your essay, so make sure that it is easy to read. It is best to have this version typed and double-spaced so it will be easy for whoever is helping you to make notes on things you can improve in your final draft.

Editing Your Essay

Step 1 Ask someone to proofread your essay.

For example, a good proofreader might point out to you that your paragraph about the death of your person might be better if you put it before your paragraph which talks about the legacy this person left behind.
Try asking a classmate to read your essay. It's a win-win for both of you because you can offer to read their essay in return. Meet up a few days after reading to talk about errors and ways to make each of your papers better.
If the person has done a good job, they may have a lot of things to say about your paper. Try not to take anything bad they say about your paper personally. They're not trying to make you feel bad, they just want to help you get a good grade.
Give them a physical copy of the paper that is double-spaced. This will make it easy for them to make corrections and write notes on your paper.

Read your paper twice. The first time, focus on what you've written, and don't look for spelling mistakes or other grammar errors. While you're reading think about whether it is easy to follow and whether or not it makes sense. This will be the time to consider rearranging any information, adding anything extra, or removing anything that doesn't seem important.
Read through the article a second time to check for grammar and spelling issues. Mark any misspelled words or typos, and make a note of any awkward sentences that you want to go back and change.

You should also read the essay out loud. Reading the essay out loud will help you find sentences that sound strange.

Make sure to follow any instructions your teacher has given you about how to format the document. For example, with regard to font, font size, and line spacing.
By now, you should feel confident that you have a well-written paper. If you still feel unsure, you can ask a different person to read your essay to reassure yourself that you have caught any mistakes.
If your teacher said they don’t care about the formatting, then stick to the defaults of your word processing program. Generally, it is a good idea to stick to font size 12 and a standard font such as Times New Roman. To make your paper easier to read, consider changing the line spacing to 1.5 or 2, unless your teacher has said not to do this.
Your teacher probably expects you to turn in a typed copy of your essay. Unless your teacher has specifically asked for handwritten papers make sure you turn in a neat, typed copy.

I believe people always have a person whom they greatly admire for specific reasons of their choice or liking. Some People admire famous people such as actors, and politicians and there are some who admire people from their close circles such as parents, teachers, and friends. I hope you too have a person that you admire. Let’s go about a Famous Person that greatly I Admire.

The Famous Person that I myself greatly admire is Mother Teresa . Mother Teresa was the epitome of kindness and generosity. She lived her entire life for the welfare of poor and destitute people. Mother Teresa was born originally as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia to a grocer father Nikolle, and a kind Mother Dranafile Bojaxhiu.

At eight years of age, she miserably lost her father due to illness, and since then she was brought up by her mother. Her mother taught Mother Teresa, to be kind and helpful to others. Mother Teresa practised kindness and generosity from a very young age.

Also at a very young age, she wanted to embrace Christianity and wanted to become a nun. After a short stint as a nun in Ireland, She along with a group of other nuns was destined to India to do community service as part of a Christian Missionary.

There she worked in a school in Calcutta as a teacher for 20 years, before she left her teaching job to do social work full-time after being disturbed by the sight of unimaginable poverty in Kolkata and thereafter she vowed to help the poor and destitute people in Bengal.

During her life in India, Mother Teresa helped a lot of destitute and ill, and socially neglected people with no means of financial and medical aid. She lent a large part of her focus to care for leprosy-affected people who suffered without any means of support. She ran pillar to post in India for financial aid to support a large number of people she takes care of.

Though she faced many humiliations initially while reaching out for help, she tolerated all of them with absolute kindness. She had opened homes for the poor, and also successfully managed to institutionalize her social work with great hard work and perseverance. She also inspired many people to do social work.

Appreciating her noble work, the Government of India felicitated Mother Teresa with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the year 1980. She’s also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and Ramon Magsaysay award for her greatest contribution to the fight against poverty and distress in South and East Asia, especially India.

Though many famous people lived and left the world and only a few of them are remembered forever. Mother Teresa will be remembered forever. She is a symbol of kindness and selflessness. That’s why Mother Teresa is a famous person I admire.

My cousin laura.

Someone I admire is my cousin Laura. She’s five years older than me, so she’s 19 now and she lives in Bristol. She’s very friendly and confident and she’s got long, wavy, brown hair and greeny-brown eyes. She’s medium height, slim and very fit because she’s a dancer.

She’s been dancing since she was six years old and trains every day at her dance school. She wants to be a professional dancer, but it’s a very difficult profession because it’s so competitive. She often dances in shows and I’ve been to watch her several times. Her favourite type of dance is modern, which is sometimes a bit strange, but I love watching her dance.

Laura is very busy because she also studies photography at university. She’s a really good photographer and has taken lots of amazing photos of me and my family. Her photos have won a few prizes and last year one of her photos was in an exhibition at an art gallery in London.

Laura doesn’t have a lot of free time and she’s also trying to learn German because she wants to go to Germany next year to do a photography course. I think Laura is very hard-working and she deserves to become a professional dancer one day.

The person I admire most in this world is Warren Buffet, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Holdings. He is among the three wealthiest people in the world with a net worth estimated at more than $87 Billion (Loudenback 2018). My admiration for Mr. Buffet is based on his long and prosperous career in investments, his discipline, philanthropy, and leadership. A brief history of Warren Buffet shows a determined man who uses his business acumen to revolutionize the idea of investments and transform a rundown textile mill, Berkshire into the largest holding companies in the world (Finkle).

Buffet was born during the great depression in 1930 to Leila Stahl Buffet and Howard Buffet in Omaha, Nebraska. Even at a young age, he had enthusiasm for business and investments. He began working at his grandfather's grocery store and started saving the money. In 1945, he opened a small business in Omaha with one pinball machine and expanded it later into an arcade (Loudenback 2018). The profits from this venture allowed him to buy forty acres of land, which he leased for more profits. He did not have a passion for education, but his father pressured him, and after being rejected by Harvard University, he completed his graduate degree at Columbia University.

His investment model and career began hereafter he interacted with his then professor and mentor, Benjamin Graham. Many in the business community regard Benjamin Graham as the father of value investing (Finkle 2). However, after learning from him, Buffet was dissatisfied and sought to improve on the concept of value investing. His solution included understanding the business model, processes, and management. He stipulated that there is more to a company than the value of assets, especially, the value of management and the company's competitive advantage (Finkle 2).

He began his private business by building partnerships with his friends and family to mitigate the loss of investment funds. Throughout the early years, he remained disciplined and reinvested the profits taking home a modest salary. At age 30, he decided to merge all his partnerships, and this made him a millionaire. In 1962, he joined with one of his friends, Charlie Munger and bought a dying textile mill, Berkshire Hathaway. He employed his business acumen, financial resources, and leadership to make the mill profitable. However, he realized that manufacturing in America was doomed and began correcting course. Parts of the company were sold gradually, and by 1987, Berkshire Hathaway had sold off all the textile mills and taken up insurance provision (John 184).

Some of the best investments he made were buying a 12% stake in Salomon Incorporated and became its largest shareholder, steering it through tough times in the 1990s. He also acquired a 7% stake in Coca Cola for $1.02 billion, and this has grown over the years to make him billions. He also bought a stake in the Washington Post for $11 million and held on despite the hard times only to sell it four decades later for $1.1 billions of dollars (Loudenback 2018). Mr. Buffet is no stranger to failure, but his values and leadership inspire his employees to achieve better results.

In conclusion, Warren Buffet is known to value honesty and transparency in all affairs, and he owns up to his failures. Most of all, he believes in the concept of autonomy to give people room for growth. In all companies he acquires, he studies the management, and their competitive advantage then allows them the independence of operations (Northouse 195). It is because of this that Berkshire Hathaway has managed to remain successful for decades. Another thing to admire about him is his pledge to donate 85% of his wealth to charity (Finkle 10). He is an inspirational man who has achieved more than would be expected of anyone in a single lifetime.

His name is David, and he comes from a family of Georgian refugees who escaped the country when a civil war broke out there in 1991. He was a small child back then, but he says he can remember tanks driving through the main streets of his hometown. For a couple of years, David’s family resided in Eastern Europe, and then managed to move across the Atlantic Ocean and settle in the United States, in New York, where I met him while studying in high school.

Perhaps his most protuberant quality is his erudition, formed by his passion for studying. I do not know any other person—at least among people I am surrounded with—who has such a diverse knowledge in varying fields. David would be reading literature on history, physics, political science, economy, and cultural studies just because he was interested in it, not because it was an assignment given to him by his university professors. A couple of years ago, he became extremely interested in Arabian culture, and this interest resulted in deep research in this field. He studied the history of the Middle East from Sumer and Babylon and to the modern days, and in my opinion, he now can be considered a specialist in this subject. At present, he works with Middle East diplomatic delegations, participates in conferences, and I am sure this is work he enjoys.

David has a natural inclination for studying foreign languages. I do not know how he studied English; he speaks it fluently and almost without an accent. Besides Georgian and English, David also speaks Arabic, Spanish, Russian, and Hebrew. His language skills allow David to make friends and maintain a correspondence with numerous people around the world—they are extremely valuable to his work. It was his goal to become a polyglot, and he reached it by his own efforts: all the foreign languages he knows, he has studied himself. This speaks in favor of such qualities as discipline, persistence, and a sense of purpose.

David is a person who can be called selfless. Though I do not know whether it is for good or bad for him, David will consistently try to help his friends, relatives, and acquaintances (and often even unfamiliar people), even if it ruins his own plans. Combined with David’s sense of responsibility, this makes him a reliable person who can be counted on. However, this trait of his is so prominent that many unscrupulous individuals—be it colleagues or relatives—use David’s capabilities for their own goals, addressing him for help much more often than it is proper and using his inability to refuse requests.

My best friend David is not a publicly-recognized person. He is not a celebrity, he has not made significant scientific discoveries, written a book, or influenced the life of a country. If you see him in the streets, you will probably never guess that you see a man of great intelligence, willpower, and dignity, and will simply pass him by. But if you knew David as well as I do, you would admire his personality as well. We are no longer students, and our lives now intersect more rarely than we would both want. But I think this is a friendship that will never grow dim.

A weird thing is happening to me this week: I am turning 60.

I enter a seventh decade with no small amount of apprehension. This decade proved lethal to my father, and many people whom I admire have written about reaching this milestone with distaste. “I just swallowed it down to my hiatal hernia where it stayed, like a golf ball of peanut butter,” wrote the legendary sportswriter Robert Lipsyte about his 60th birthday. Or as my colleague Caitlin Flanagan noted in The Atlantic as she entered her 60s, “I feel vaguely embarrassed about it, like I’ve somehow let myself go, like I’ve been bingeing on decades and wound up in this unappealing condition.”

Turning 60, of course, is not a uniquely grim anniversary—marking our birthdays negatively is a commonplace of growing older. The experience can even be seen in pathological terms. The website Medical News Today lists symptoms of “birthday depression” that sound like a bad drug trip: paranoia, obsessive thinking, and avoiding contact with people.

Even youth itself is not immune from the condition: You might be half my age and still feeling plenty of discomfort about turning 30. In fact, I remember my 30th very well—it doesn’t seem so long ago. I was a professional musician in those days, and although my birthday depression did not lead me to act like a paranoid recluse, I was worrying about whether the best days of my performing career were behind me and whether I was going bald. They were, and I was.

What I should have been doing on my 30th birthday was looking ahead with hope and setting specific, positive goals. And that’s the way I intend to spend my 60th. Here’s how you can look forward, too, no matter what your age.

Joe Pinsker: The strange origins of American birthday celebrations

P eople pay a lot of attention to landmark birthdays because many of us tend to endow round numbers with special psychological significance. In 2011, two psychologists showed this in the cases of baseball batting averages and SAT scores. In the former instance, they demonstrated that baseball players on their last plate appearance of the season were more likely to get a base hit if their batting average was .298 or .299 than if it was .300 or .301. In the latter example, they showed that students were more likely to retake the SATs if their previous score was just short of a round number.

In baseball and SAT scores, we see being able to round up as a positive, motivating goal. But the significance of closing in on a round number can also be negative, as in the case of milestone birthdays. One way to understand this is by looking at how people behave in the run-up to a big anniversary—the so-called 9-enders (29, 59, etc.). One study from 2014 found that 9-enders tend to be preoccupied by the vicissitudes of aging and a sense of meaningfulness, and may make dramatic changes to their lives in a seeming effort to disrupt an unsatisfactory status quo before reaching the milestone. For example, although the chance that they will embrace a positive aspiration, such as running a marathon , rises significantly in this last year, they are also more likely to act in a drastic, self-destructive way—like dying by suicide or seeking an extramarital affair.

Health issues become markedly more salient at milestone birthdays. Researchers in 2015 found a higher correlation between overall health and life satisfaction at the turn of each decade, whereas simply feeling good at the moment was more important to people on ordinary birthdays.

Arthur C. Brooks: The happy art of grandparenting

In an Atlantic article that arguably anticipated this finding a century ago, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author Edward Bok wrote an essay on turning 50 with an ominous title: “The Worst Birthday in a Man’s Life.” The predicament of entering his sixth decade led him to undertake strange exercise regimes in which he had to “kick in various directions or to fan the air wildly with your arms,” and adopt some drastic changes to his diet. The unfortunate faced with such a midlife crisis would, Bok went on, “cry either that you are ‘springing new-fangled notions’ on him, that the doctor is ‘a nut,’ or that his wife is starving him.”

Even doctors themselves treat us differently on birthdays—and not just by dispensing “nutty” advice to eat more healthfully. A 2022 study in the journal Health Economics showed that, when faced with new patients, Israeli primary-care physicians scheduled more diagnostic tests for those who had just attained a decadal birthday than for those who were merely approaching one. Even doctors’ own performance is correlated with their birthday: Scholars in 2020 found that the likelihood of a patient dying in the 30 days after a surgery is 1.3 percent higher if the operation occurs on the surgeon’s birthday than if it occurs on another day. (You might especially want to avoid surgery on your surgeon’s 60th birthday.)

T he key to a good milestone birthday is to change the experience from being an affliction to an opportunity, using the “fresh start” effect. Scholars have demonstrated that people are more likely to undertake a self-improvement goal (such as losing weight or exercising) on days they endow with a special significance. Thus, milestone birthdays are opportunities to make desired changes to your life. But you do have to pick the right goals. Researchers have found that happiness is highest when your objectives have two characteristics: They are intrinsic and positive, as opposed to extrinsic and negative.

First, intrinsic goals are those in which the rewards come from within, not from the outside world. Typical extrinsic goals include money, recognition, and beauty, whereas intrinsic goals valorize relationship quality and spiritual depth. To underline this priority, scholars have shown that, unlike intrinsic goals, extrinsic ones are actually correlated with lower well-being over time. In my own research, I have found that such external rewards are inherently unsatisfying, despite their seemingly intuitive appeal. (I always think of the famous cartoon of an old man on his deathbed confessing, “I should have bought more crap.”)

Second, the best goals have “approach” rather than “avoidance” motivations. In the first bucket are objectives such as “Spend more time enjoying nature on long walks” or “Practice loving-kindness meditation.” The second bucket would include such goals as “Quit my crummy job” or “Stop complaining all the time.” The avoidant goals are not necessarily useless or silly, but they are interestingly associated with poorer health in the long run—so, for that reason, they don’t work as good milestone aspirations to make the future happier.

In sum, as you approach a landmark birthday, take time to envision how you would like your life to look at the next milestone. Then, create a list of five to 10 goals that are both positive and intrinsic.
