Short Answer Questions:                                                  3 Marks

3. Define joints. Explain its importance.

Ans: The regions of the body where two bones meet and connect are known as joints. Joints are necessary for the movement of body parts. Bones are strong, rigid support that provide the body with a framework and structure. The action of muscles allows the bones to move through joints. Different types of joints in the body allow for various motions.

4. List the various joints in the human body with examples.

Ans: The following are the most common types of joints found in the human body:

Ball and socket joint: found in the shoulder and hip joint.

Pivotal Joint: This joint connects the head to the shoulder and is located in the neck.

Hinge Joint: Elbows and knees have hinge joints.

Fixed Joints: These are located in the skull.

Gliding Joints: This is found in joints of the wrist.

Saddle Joints: Present in thumb.

5. Explain how muscles work to cause movements in bones.

Ans: Muscles are soft contractile structures that contract to move the body. Muscles shorten and stiffen as they contract. The bone is pulled and moves as a result of this movement. Muscles function in pairs. When one of the muscles contracts the other unconsciously relaxes. The bone is pulled in one direction by the contracted muscle. The other muscle in the pair contracts as the first relaxes to return the bone to its previous position. This causes the bone to migrate in the opposite direction because muscles can only pull and not push, this pair wise action is critical.

6. Explain how a fish body is designed to swim in water.

Ans: A fish is an aquatic creature. It has a sleek appearance. The head and tails are smaller than the main portion of the fish in this shape. This allows the water to flow freely around the fish. The muscles in a fish's body are also quite powerful, allowing them to swim easily. The muscles in the front half of the body curve to one side, while the muscles in the back section of the body curve to the opposite side. The body jerks forward as a result of this. The tail and fin muscles help the fish to maintain its balance and direction also.

7. Why do snakes not move forward in a straight line?

Ans: The snake's body is twisted into a tangle of loops. The snake's body is made up of several muscles that are linked to one another and to the skeleton's bones. Each of the snake's loops is moved by these muscles. As a result, each snake loop pushes forward by pressing on the ground. As the snake body is made up of numerous individual loops that push and move forward, it does not move in a straight line, even though it moves incredibly swiftly.

Long Answer Questions:                                                 5 Marks

8. What is meant by skeleton? What is the importance of skeletal structure? List the important parts of the skeleton.

Ans: The skeleton is the body's basic structural structure, which is made up of bones.

The importance of the skeletal structure is as follows:

It provides the body's basic structural framework.

It aids in the support of various body components.

It shields the internal organs from harm.

It aids in motility and mobility.

The important parts of the skeleton are as follows:

Skull: The skull is a collection of bones which encase the brain and give form to the head and face.

Vertebral Column: This is the backbone that supports the body's posture and shape. The spinal cord is also contained inside it.

Rib cage: The ribs and the sternum make up the rib cage. Protects the internal organs of the chest cavity, such as the heart and lungs.

Shoulder/pectoral girdle: This consists of the shoulder blade, as well as a ball and socket joint for the arm's attachment.

Hip/pelvic girdle: The ball and socket joint that connects the leg to the pelvis. It also houses all of the hip bones.

Limbs: Arms and legs are made up of bones.

9. Compare ball and socket joints with pivot joints.

FAQs on Important Questions for CBSE Class 6 Science Chapter 8 - Body Movements

1. Why do we need two muscles to move a bone according to Chapter 8 Class 6 Science?

Muscles and bones are important parts of the human body that need to work together. A human being can only move a bone with the help of two muscles. A muscle is known only to pull, not to push. Therefore, when one of the muscles contracts, a bone in the body is pulled. When the other muscle pulls, it helps to bring back the bone to its original position. Therefore, a human body requires at least two muscles in order to move a single bone in the body.

2. How does an earthworm move as described in Chapter 8 Class 6 Science?

Earthworms are tiny creatures that do not have any bones in them. Instead, these creatures are completely made up of muscles. While earthworms try to move, they first extend their front part of the body while keeping their rear part fixed on the ground. It then keeps its front part of the ground and then releases the rear part. It pulls the rear end forward while shortening its body. It repeats the contraction and expansion and ends up moving from one place to another.

3. What are the important questions of Chapter 8 Class 6 Science?

‘’Body Movements’’ is an important part of class 6 science. There are many important questions that are asked in this chapter. Students must know all the important definitions, and diagrams available in this chapter. These important questions of Chapter 8 Class 6 Science are picked from all the important concepts and topics available in this chapter. Students can access these important questions through Vedantu online portal and mobile app. Students can even download the PDF for free.

4. Why can our elbows not move backwards according to Chapter 8 Class 6 Science?

Our elbows are considered to be joints. In a joint, the end part of two bones is fixed together in the form of a hinge on a door. This in turn restricts the movement, extension, and flexion. Due to this, the movement of the joint takes place in one movement only. Since our elbows are considered joints, the elbow joint only permits movement in one direction. Therefore, our elbows can only move forward and not backwards.

5. What is cartilage according to Chapter 8 Class 6 Science?

Cartilage is a part of the skeleton. The parts that are additional in the skeleton, and the parts that are not as hard as the bones are known as cartilages. These cartilages are soft and elastic in nature. Since they are elastic, the cartilages can be bent towards any form, unlike bones that cannot be bent. Apart from this, Cartilages help to make some of the body parts of living organisms. An example is the cartilage of the ear.

4: Write the differences between bones and cartilage. Answer:

5. How do the muscles work?

Answer:  The muscles work in pairs. When one of them contracts, the bone is pulled in that direction, the other muscle of the pair relaxes. To move the bone in the opposite direction, the relaxed muscle contracts to pull the bone towards its original position, while the first relaxes. A muscle can only pull. It cannot push.

6. How does the earthworm move?

Answer:   Earthworm does not have bones. It has muscles. During the movement, earthworm first extends front part of the body keeping the rear portion fixed to the ground. Then it fixes the front and releases the rear end. It then shortens the body and pulls the rear end forward. In this way by repeating such muscular expansions and contractions earthworm moves.

7. How does the snail move?

Answer:  The rounded structure on the back of the snail is called shell. It is the outer skeleton (exoskeleton) of snail. When it starts moving a thick structure and the head of the snail may come out of an opening in the shell. The thick structure is called foot, which is made up of strong muscles. It helps snail in moving.

8. How does fish move in water?

Answer:  The body of fish is streamlined. The streamlined shape helps the fish to move in water. The skeleton of fish is covered with muscles which make the front part of the body to curve to one side and the tail part swings towards the opposite side. This makes a jerk and pushes the body forward. In this way it moves in water.

Long Answer Type Questions

1. Explain various kinds of joints found in our body and give example of each.

Answer:  There are five types of joints in our body:

(i)  Fixed joints:  Those joints which do not allow movement are called fixed joint.

Important Questions for Class 6 Science Chapter 8 Body Movements 2

(ii)  Ball and socket joint : This joint allows movement in all directions. The rounded end of one bone fits into the hollow space of other bone. For example, joint between upper arm and shoulder.

Important Questions for Class 6 Science Chapter 8 Body Movements 3

(iii)  Pivotal joint:  This type of joint allow movement in all planes, i.e. up and down, side and other planes. For example, head.

(iv)  Hinge joint:  The joint which allows movement only in one plane is called hinge joint. For example, fingers, knees.

Important Questions for Class 6 Science Chapter 8 Body Movements 4

(v)  Gliding joint:  These joints allow only a limited amount of movement of sliding nature of cartilage. For example, the joints of backbone.

Body Movements Class 6 Notes - Chapter 8

According to the CBSE Syllabus 2023-24, this chapter has been renumbered as Chapter 5.

Introduction to Body Movements

The ability of organisms to change position by using their body parts is called movement.

To know more about Movements, visit the link below;

  • Human Body and Its Movements
  • Types of Movements

Skeletal System

  • A skeleton is an internal structure in organisms which helps in bringing about movement.
  • It forms a framework that gives the shape of the body and provides support to organisms.
  • The skeleton is made up of bones.
  • Different kinds of bones are joined to each other in a particular manner.
  • These joints facilitate various types of movements.
  • In higher animals, bones, muscles and cartilage together make the movement possible.
  • Muscles are parts of the body that help in bringing about movement.
  • Muscles may be attached to bones (humans) or may work alone (earthworms).
  • Part of the skeleton that is not hard as bones and can be bent is cartilage.
  • They are found in the upper part of the ear, the tip of the nose and at the tips of long bones.

For more information on The Human Skeletal System, watch the below video

To know more about Skeletal System, visit the links below;

  • Functions of Human Skeletal System
  • Facts of Skeletal System
  • Joints are the points where two parts of the skeleton are fitted together to make movement possible.
  • Examples are the hip joint, elbow joint, knee joint, etc

Ball and Socket Joint

  • Ball and socket joint, where the rounded end of one bone fits into the cavity of the other bone.
  • It brings movement in all directions.
  • It is seen in the hips and shoulders of the human body.

CBSE Class 6 Science Notes Chapter 8 - 1

Pivot Joint

  • A pivotal joint is where a cylindrical bone rotates in a ring.
  • It joins the neck to the head.
  • It allows us to bend the head forward and backwards and turn the head to our left or right.

CBSE Class 6 Science Notes Chapter 8 - 2

Hinge Joints

  • Hinge joints bring about movement in only back and forth direction.
  • The knees and elbows have hinge joints.
  • The following image is a hinge joint in the elbow.

CBSE Class 6 Science Notes Chapter 8 - 3

Fixed Joints

  • Fixed joints are immovable joints because the bones are joined together.
  • Such joints are found in the skull.

For more information on Types of Joints in the Human Body, watch the below video

Gaits of Animals

The different patterns of movement of animals due to the differences in their skeletal structure are called gaits of animals.
  • The earthworm does not have any internal skeleton.
  • The body is made up of many rings joined end to end, and muscles attached to these rings help to extend and shorten the body.
  • The skin of earthworms also has a large number of tiny bristles that help them get a good grip on the ground.
  • Repeated extension and contraction of the body muscles enable the earthworm to move through the soil.
  • Snails move with the help of their muscular, flat foot.
  • They glide along a solid surface which is lubricated with mucus.
  • This motion is powered by succeeding waves of muscular contractions of the foot.
  • The body of a cockroach is covered with a hard outer skeleton that is made of different units joined together.
  • It has three pairs of legs for walking and two pairs of wings attached to the breast for flying.
  • It has distinct muscles that are used for movement.
  • The muscles attached to the legs help in walking.
  • The breast muscles attached to the wings help in flying, although they are not good flyers.
  • Birds have special skeletal and muscular structures that help them to fly.
  • The forelimbs are modified to become wings, and the bones inside are hollow to suit flying.
  • The bones of the hind limbs are used for perching and walking.
  • The shoulder bones and breastbones are strong and support muscles of flight, which move the wings up and down.
  • Fishes have streamlined body that helps them swim with the least resistance.
  • They use their tail fin for small jerks through water, and other fins assist swimming.
  • The tail fin is also used for changing directions.
  • Snakes do not have legs for movement but use their long backbone along with muscles for movement.
  • Their body curves into many loops, which gives them a forward push by pressing against the ground.

Science is an area of study that deals with the natural world. Body movement is the eighth chapter in the Class 6 Science syllabus. Movement is the body’s change of place or position from one position to another. Muscles are tissues that can contract and help in the movement of other body parts. By moving, you can strengthen your muscles, improving stability, balance, and coordination. It also allows blood to flow. Movements are brought about by the joint efforts of the skeletal and muscular systems.

Question 3. Name various parts of the skeletal system.

Answer 3: The skeletal system can be divided into the following main parts:

  • Shoulder bones
  • Chest bones

Question 4. Keeping your arm straight, move it forwards and backwards, up and down. Can the arm move freely without any restrictions in all directions?

Answer 4: Yes, the arm can move freely in all directions, i.e. forward, backward, down and up.

Question 5. Do all animals have bones?

Answer 5: No, not all creatures have bones. The only creatures with bones are those with backbones. Sharks’ skeletons are the only ones fully formed of cartilage among animals with backbones. The bodies of leeches, worms, and jellyfish are not supported by solid structures.

Question 6. What is bone marrow? Give its main function.

Answer 6: Bone marrow is a spongy substance found in the centre of the bones. Its main function is to produce new blood cells to replace damaged and worn-out ones.

Question 7. Which organisms do not have muscles or a skeleton for movement?

(c) Earthworm

(d) Human being

Answer 7: None

Explanation: The skeleton is absent from earthworms. There are two sets of muscles in it, one of which makes it long and thin and the other of which makes it fat. These muscles’ contractions and relaxations facilitate movement. Exoskeletons and muscles are present in snails. Dogs and humans both have muscles and an endoskeleton.

Question 8. What would have happened if our backbone had been made of one single bone?

Answer 8: If our backbone had only one bone, we would not  be able to bend and twist our backbone.  .

Question 9. How many types of joints are there? Explain each of them.

Answer 9: The main types of joints in the human are:

  • Hinge joint
  • Ball and socket joint
  • Pivot joint
  • Fixed joint

(i) Hinge joint: Hinge joints allow bones to move in only one direction, i.e. back and forth.

(ii) Ball and socket joint: A “ball”-shaped bone end that fits into a “socket” (hollow space) in another bone makes up the ball and socket joint. Such joints, like the hip and shoulder joints, permit movement in all directions.

(iii) Pivot joint: A cylindrical bone rotates within a ring-shaped bone in a pivot joint. The pivot joint permits movement in both directions, including right and left, for example, at the neck joint.

(iv) Fixed joint: In certain joints, the bones are held together so firmly that they are completely immobile.

Question 10. Boojho hurt his ankle after falling off a tree. The doctor found that the ankle was fractured after the examination. How was it detected?

Answer 10: A doctor must have examined the affected area for oedema and obtained an ankle X-ray. The forms of the bones in our body are visible in X-ray scans. The doctor may have confirmed a fracture in the ankle by glancing at the x-ray.

Question 26. What is a skeleton? State its functions.

Answer 26: The skeleton is the framework of bones and cartilage that supports and protects the body’s soft tissues and internal organs.

Functions of the skeleton:

  • The skeletal system provides shape to the body.
  • It works as a support structure for your body.
  • It facilitates movement.
  • It produces blood cells.
  • It protects organs.
  • It stores minerals and fats.

Question 27. List the names of three animals that have streamlined bodies.

Question 28. What is a muscle? Explain how it helps in movement.

Answer 28: Muscles are soft tissues. Many stretchy fibres make up your muscles. Different types of muscles have different functions. . Muscles are attached to the bones through a long fibre called a tendon. There are more than 600 muscles in our body.

Muscles always function in pairs. In a pair of muscles, when one contracts, the other muscle relaxes. A muscle can only return to its initial position after the other muscle in the pair contracts.
