Psychology - bs.

All psychology majors receive a rigorous program of undergraduate education and training that encourages critical thinking, lifelong learning, and the analysis and integration of information about individuals and groups of people. The curriculum leading to a degree in psychology provides students with an understanding of human behavior and the ability to use scientific methods to answer questions about human behavior.

Students majoring in psychology may earn either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. The psychology course requirements for the two degrees are identical; they differ with respect to the requirements in other disciplines. For example, the BA degree requires courses in a foreign language and extra humanities hours, whereas the BS degree requires additional hours in the physical and biological sciences.

Students interested in studying human behavior, with a science-oriented supporting curriculum, pursue a Bachelor of Science degree. The BS can successfully prepare students interested in further study in a science-oriented psychology graduate program (such as neuroscience) or medical school, or other health-related graduate and professional programs (e.g., pharmacy, physical therapy), as well as students interested in entry-level positions in business or applied psychology.

  • Capstone in Psychology: Research Laboratory (PSY 3901W, 3 credits)
  • This may be fulfilled during the semester prior to or concurrently with PSY 3901W

Transfer Guide

Career paths, recommendations from the department of psychology.

PSY 1001-Introduction to Psychology is a prerequisite to all other courses in the major. DO take an introductory or general psychology course at your current institution to stay on track.

“Statistics” – PSY 3801-Introduction to Psychological Measurement and Data Analysis, is required for both the BA and the BS major. PSY 3801 can be challenging for students with no background in statistics. If you are a community college student who is uncomfortable with math, consider taking an introductory/elementary statistics course at your community college to prepare. While it is unlikely that a statistics course from a community college will count in place of PSY 3801, it can provide a good knowledge base for future success in PSY 3801. Transfer students will typically take PSY 3801 in their first semester at UMTC.

BS Outside Psychology Foundation (OPFC) courses – For the BS Psychology major, 18 or more credits from disciplines outside of Psychology are required – Philosophy, Computer Science/Math, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences. Some of the approved courses have prerequisites. For example, Math 1271 - Calculus I can count as an Outside Foundation course; however, depending on your math skills, you may need a prerequisite math course before you can take Math 1271.

Depending on the Outside Foundation courses you choose, plan to start appropriate prerequisites for courses early in your academic career.

A grade of C- or better is required in all courses approved to satisfy major requirements. See  the catalog  for all courses in the major.

Remember, when using Transferology to plan courses for the major, look for courses that transfer as direct equivalents to UMTC major courses. In Transferology, a direct equivalent shows as the UMTC course number. For example, COMM 1101 is a direct equivalent, while COMM 1T*** is not.

In CLA, each department has a process to  declare  the major. This is a necessary step for the major to be added to the student record. New transfer students do not declare their majors until after they attend orientation.

To declare the Psychology major (BA or BS), students must complete an online Pre-Major module, and then meet with a Psychology departmental advisor for a declaration appointment. Intended Psychology BS majors must also submit a BS planning sheet prior to attending their declaration appointment.

Before declaring Psychology as a major, completion of PSY 1001 (or an equivalent transfer course) is strongly recommended.

The Psychology Department reserves some seats in PSY 3801 and PSY 3001W through the end of the sophomore registration queue for declared Psychology majors. Intended majors typically do not have issues registering for PSY 3801 before they are declared. However, students should plan to declare the major prior to taking PSY 3001W, as the majority of the seats in this class are reserved for declared majors.

We recommend that you meet with the Psychology advising staff during your first semester in CLA to discuss your interests and the declaration process.  This meeting allows the departmental advisor to tell you about the opportunities within the major, which include research and scholarships, as well as help you stay on track in the major.

Lower division coursework  - The only lower division (1xxx-level) course that counts toward the Psychology major is PSY 1001. Completion of PSY 1001 is strongly recommended prior to major declaration. All other courses in the major are 3xxx-level or above.

Major residency requirement  - A minimum of 16 upper level credits must be completed through the Department of Psychology at the UMTC campus.

Other limits on the use of transfer credits –

  • Few Psychology courses from community colleges transfer into the major as 3xxx-level courses. If you are transferring from a community college, we recommend taking no more than two (2) Psychology courses beyond the Introduction to Psychology at your community college.  Abnormal Psychology, a course offered at most institutions, is most likely to be usable toward the major.
  • Courses usable toward the psychology major must be theoretical in nature.  Courses that have a focus on applied psychology rather than theory (e.g., Psychology of Adjustment, Stress or Management, Psychology of Death and Dying, etc.), or classes that do not have PSY 1001 as a prerequisite are not likely to be approved for use toward major requirements.
  • Most developmental/lifespan psychology courses from community colleges are not usable in the major. Any course that is developmental psychology-focused must be evaluated by the Developmental Psychology Department (at UMTC, CPSY is the designator for Developmental Psychology courses) . A developmental/lifespan psychology course MUST be equivalent to one of the two approved CPSY courses (CPSY 3301 or CPSY 4303) in order to count toward the Psychology major.

The  Transfer Student webpage  on the Psychology Undergraduate website provides information on the department’s process for evaluating Psychology transfer coursework. Transfer courses are evaluated by the department for use towards the major. Check  Transferology  to see if an evaluation already exists for the courses you would like to use toward the major.  If you find a course that has not been evaluated you can  submit the course for review . A copy of the course syllabus is required.

Planning for a BA or a BS with a Psychology major-

  • If you are planning to complete a BA degree, consider completing or starting your second language before you transfer to CLA. Be sure to talk with a  CLA transfer advisor  about any questions you have about completing the CLA Second Language requirement.
  • If you are planning to complete the BS Psychology major, you should plan to start taking the courses or the appropriate prerequisites for the courses you intend to use towards to Outside Foundation requirement.

The nature of psychology at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities may be different than what you are accustomed to at your current institution. Psychology at UMTC is empirical in nature, with a heavy focus on psychology as a science. It is also the largest major on campus with over 1,500 students; classes are large and often led by graduate students.

The Psychology major is a good fit for many students (especially if you are interested in research and/or the scientific application of psychology). However, some students find a better home in another major. Developmental Psychology and Sociology in CLA, or Family Social Science in CEHD, are common alternatives for students interested in psychology.

All liberal arts degrees help CLA students develop their  Core Career Competencies , and psychology majors develop specific skills that are applicable to lots of different careers. These skills include a strong understanding of the human mind and behavior; analytical thinking, problem-solving and quantitative skills; and verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Students who take the  SuperStrong Interest Inventory  receive a three-letter interest code, which identifies their top three areas of interest, work activities, potential skills, and personal values. The interest code "SIE" is often associated with this major, however, the SuperStrong assessment can help you understand how your interests connect to a variety of majors and career options.  You can learn more about common employer types and occupations associated with this major . That research could potentially guide the policies and practices that could impact inequity within healthcare. This class helped me to fine-tune the way I wanted to make my mark through a future degree. It pushed me to find my niche in research."

Psychology Degree Guide: Courses, Careers And Online Options

Key Takeaways

  • Psychology degrees offer students an array of valuable skills they can use to work as psychologists or in other related professions.
  • Psychology degrees combine the quantitative rigors of the natural sciences with the qualitative analyses of the humanities and social sciences.
  • Psychology students can specialize in subfields such as neuroscience, clinical psychology and behavior analysis.

Why do we feel, think, and act the way we do? Psychologists offer science-based insight into the enigmas that surround the human condition.

More than any other field, psychology can be viewed as the study of human behavior and what motivates us to live our lives the way we do. Psychology combines the empirical rigors of the hard sciences with the sociocultural qualitative analysis of the social sciences and humanities.

If you have ever made a “Freudian slip” while speaking, talked about someone doing something “unconsciously” or tried to interpret your dreams, you’ve been influenced by the vocabulary and theories of psychology.

Although the origins of psychology as a scientific field of study can be found in 19th-century Germany, philosophers and scientists have been hypothesizing for millennia about the way our behavior is engendered by the dynamic relationship that exists between our brains and our emotions. The formalization of such inquiries has led to an ever-growing field that now includes studying children, adults, animals and even machines.

What Is a Bachelor’s in Psychology?

A bachelor’s degree in psychology provides students with a holistic understanding and appreciation for the myriad ways in which psychology is used in the medical, therapeutic and professional worlds. Broadly defined as the science of human and animal behavior, psychology is currently being redefined by cutting-edge undergraduate programs to include the behavior of machines and artificial intelligence.

Psychology students are immersed in the theoretical and experiential foundations of psychological science by taking courses that focus on the behavioral, cognitive, developmental and social aspects of psychological studies. In other words, psychology aims to figure out why we feel, think and do the things we feel, think and do.

A bachelor’s degree in psychology is typically seen as the most effective gateway to earning the graduate degrees that allow you to become a psychiatrist or psychologist. However, because psychology majors are seen as individuals with multiple skill sets, more than 70% of recent graduates with a bachelor’s degree in psychology work outside of the field.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychology degree holders work in areas as diverse as web development, architecture, journalism and education. After all, a psychology major’s keen insight into the human mind can prove beneficial to many businesses and organizations looking to build their customer and client base.

Degree Finder

Types of psychology degrees.

Below, explore the various types of degrees you can earn in psychology.

Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.)

An associate degree in psychology usually takes two years to earn at a community college. Because job options in psychology are limited for those who only have an associate degree, most associate in psychology graduates use this degree as an affordable stepping stone to earning a bachelor’s degree.

An A.A. approaches psychology with a liberal arts focus. A.S. and A.A.S. programs in psychology are similar to A.A. programs, but with a more practice-focused approach.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

A B.A. in psychology usually requires a more well-rounded liberal arts education with a mix of courses in the humanities, the social sciences and general education. A B.A. is a good option for students who want to enter career fields where understanding human behavior is a strong asset. This degree usually takes four years to earn.

A B.S. in psychology usually requires more math and natural science courses that emphasize quantitative analysis. A B.S. is a good option for students who want to work in laboratories and do research that requires empirical methodologies. This degree usually takes four years to earn.

Typical courses for both the B.A. and B.S. tracks at most universities can include cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, statistics, psychopathology and mental health, social psychology and research methods.

Master of Science (M.S.) or Master of Arts (M.A.)

Typically lasting two to three years, the M.S. in psychology tends to take a practice-based approach to advanced education in psychology. Learners who plan to enter the workforce directly after earning their master’s might benefit from a Master of Science in psychology.

The psychology M.A., on the other hand, caters to students who plan to transfer into doctoral programs after completing their master’s. An M.A. in psychology delivers advanced education in the field through a liberal arts-focused lens.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)

A Ph.D. in psychology delivers research-based psychology education at the doctoral level. Students seeking careers in academia or research may benefit most from earning a Ph.D. in psychology. This degree typically takes four to seven years to complete, though completion times vary drastically depending on each student’s program, area of emphasis and enrollment status.

A Doctor of Psychology is another doctoral-level psychology degree, but it’s more practiced-focused than a Ph.D. in psychology. Students who want to practice clinical psychology may benefit most from earning a Psy.D. Though they often include practice requirements, Psy.D. programs often run shorter than Ph.D. programs, taking four to five years to complete.

Psychology Specializations

Aspiring psychology majors may consider the following specializations. This list represents only a few possible areas of emphasis for psychology students.

Counseling Psychology

Counseling psychology focuses on our everyday interactions with others and ourselves. A great specialization for students who want to be social workers and mental health counselors, a counseling psychology specialty combines theoretical approaches and research methods to provide students with the opportunity to conduct clinically relevant research.

Neuroscience

A neuroscience specialty, also known as a behavioral and cognitive neuroscience specialty, expands upon environmental life sciences to closely examine the entire nervous system with a focus on cognitive, behavioral and brain functions.

Behavior Analysis

Behavior analysts study how environmentally influenced behavior is established and how it can be modified. With a focus on creating practical solutions to various behavioral problems, these programs often help students become Board Certified Behavior Analysts®.

Should You Earn a Degree in Psychology Online?

Degrees earned from online programs are just as reputable as degrees earned from in-person programs as long as they are from accredited universities and psychology departments. The most important factor in deciding on whether to earn your degree online is what type of learning format best suits your learning style and day-to-day scheduling needs.

You should also consider whether an online program offers networking, internship and group project opportunities that might only be available in in-person settings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Psychology Degrees

Are psychology degrees worth it.

Yes. You cannot become a licensed psychologist, a clinical social worker or a certified mental health therapist without a formal degree. While you may not need a bachelor’s degree in psychology to earn an advanced degree in psychology, it helps. At a minimum, though, you need a bachelor’s degree to pursue a graduate degree in psychology or a related field.

What degree is best for psychology?

The best degree depends on your career goals because psychology is such a broad field. While a bachelor’s degree in psychology will cover many areas, a bachelor’s degree in sociology or social work may be more suitable for laying the foundation for an advanced degree more closely aligned to your desired career.

However, if you want to be a licensed psychologist, a bachelor’s degree in psychology will prepare you for the coursework you will need to complete in graduate school.

Are psychology degrees difficult?

Psychology degrees are just as challenging to earn as other bachelor’s degrees that combine the social and natural sciences with the humanities. However, a psychology degree requires more math- and science-intensive courses than majors such as social work and sociology. Those who prefer qualitative analysis over quantitative analysis should reconsider majoring in psychology.

What grades do I need to study psychology?

Generally speaking, the higher your GPA, the stronger your chances are of being accepted into the university and program of your choice. Research the requirements of the programs in which you are interested. More competitive programs may require certain minimum grades in psychology, biology and mathematics classes.

Differences Between a B.A. and a B.S. in Psychology

The first thing that many newly decided psychology majors might notice is that their university offers two different undergraduate degree options: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS). The two degrees are often very similar, but there are a few key differences that students should understand.

Universities have varying requirements, so it is important to start by taking a look at your school's undergraduate catalog to see the differences between the two degrees. Note the core classes required for each degree, and then look at the electives and subject-matter courses that are required.

Always be sure to talk to your academic advisor for more detailed information about your university's degree offerings.

Arts vs. Science Degree

So what is it that distinguishes a B.A. in psychology from a B.S. in psychology? There are a few course differences that you should be aware of.

BA in Psychology

Generally speaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree encompasses a broad range of general education courses. In addition to the core psychology coursework, students may choose from a variety of liberal arts courses in areas like communication, social psychology, philosophy, ethics, and so on. Students who choose this degree may also be required to complete a foreign language component.

The BA degree will help students prepare for students planning to go to graduate school for further training in psychology, but can also be a great option for students who want to explore other disciplines. Students who choose this degree option can also opt to go on to further study in:

  • Political science
  • Social work

Students who earn a BA degree may choose to focus on careers that involve interpersonal and communication skills such as human resources, management, or journalism.

BS in Psychology

A Bachelor of Science degree in psychology will have a more narrow focus on science, research, and mathematics courses than general education classes.

Students with a strong interest in science can also benefit from this degree option's extensive study in biological science and research methodology . Students who earn a BS degree may pursue careers in fields that involve data collection and research, including healthcare, marketing, forensics, and industrial-organizational psychology.

For example, you might want to study psychology but also take courses in an area such as anatomy/physiology, nutrition, and health. Such preparation might be perfect for students who are considering specialized psychology fields such as health psychology or forensic psychology.

It is important to focus on choosing a degree that is best suited to your unique needs, skills, interests, and professional goals.

While one degree is not necessarily better than another, some educational experts suggest that students who earn a BS degree in psychology have greater flexibility and more opportunities.

Which Degree Is Best?

Before deciding which option is right for you, review your university's requirements for each degree and talk to an advisor within the psychology department for further advice.

If you know you want to pursue graduate school following your undergraduate degree, you may want to investigate a few graduate programs to see what their admission requirements are.

You are interested in taking a wider range of humanities courses, including foreign language classes.

You plan on going to graduate school, but may not want to be a psychologist.

You are planning on going straight into the workforce after completing your undergraduate degree.

You are interested in a more science-oriented curriculum.

You plan to earn a graduate degree in psychology.

You plan to go to medical school.

The American Psychological Association suggests that there is often little difference between the degree options. Instead, they suggest that the most important consideration should be taking classes that will prepare you for graduate school or a career.

Whether you earn a BA or BS degree, an undergraduate degree in psychology can open up a range of career opportunities. Some careers you might consider include social services, public relations, human resources, case management, criminal justice, life coaching, as well as many other entry-level career options .

A Word From Verywell

A bachelor's degree in psychology can be a great stepping stone toward a rewarding career or further graduate study. However, it pays to consider which type of bachelor's degree will best serve your goals.

A Bachelor of Arts in psychology will lay a great foundation for multiple career pathways, whether it is in clinical psychology, or something like law, business, human resources, or counseling. It can also be a great choice if you are interested in going straight to work after graduation.

If, however, you are thinking about committing to further graduate study in specific areas of psychology like research, forensics, health, or I-O, a Bachelor of Science in psychology may be the better choice.

In either case, consider your goals and what you plan to do with your degree in order to determine which option is right for you.

The agency assesses the institution's faculty qualifications, graduation requirements, and student learning outcomes.

Programs and departments within schools can receive programmatic accreditation, but bachelor's programs for psychology do not receive accreditation. Still, several agencies accredit psychology programs at the graduate level:

Many students find a MS in Psychology sufficient for the types of jobs they want. Others discover a doctorate necessary for the occupations to which they aspire.

What Is a PhD In Psychology?

A PhD in psychology is the highest-level degree within the discipline. Earning it signifies academic excellence and dedication to the field. In addition to mastering psychological theories and concepts, PhD candidates learn how to advance scientific knowledge through their own original research.

Who Should Get a PhD In Psychology?

Obtaining a PhD in psychology is a rigorous process. It involves classwork, passing an oral exam demonstrating competency, and completing a dissertation. Practicums, internships, and teaching experiences may also be part of the program.

Students thinking about entering such a program should possess a  strong background in psychology , such as a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree. They also should look closely at their career goals and decide whether a PhD puts them on the right path.

PsyD Vs PhD at a Glance

In general, PsyD programs:

  • Focus heavily on applied psychology

  • Attract students interested in working as therapists inc community mental health, hospital, and private practice settings

Certificate in Psychology

Master’s in psychology certification and licensure.

Many careers in psychology also require a license or certification to practice or obtain a job. It is important to research requirements for your desired career path, and choose a school, program, and speciality that prepare you to meet your career goals.

The specific license or certification required varies by state. Make sure to check your desired field’s requirements before you commit to a school or program.

PsyD Certification and Licensure

Psychologists need a license in order to practice. Exact  licensing laws vary by state  and type of position, so individuals need to look at the requirements for the location where they wish to work.

Earning a PsyD typically satisfies educational requirements. Licensure also generally requires an internship, either 1-2 years of supervised professional experience or a one-year post-doctoral fellowship, and passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

Therapists also need a license. Students should seek specifics from their prospective occupation’s state regulatory board.

Psychology-related occupations often require state licensure. Knowing the specifics for the state in which one hopes to find employment can guide educational and career choices and prevent unwelcome surprises down the line.

Psychologists, for example, typically need to complete the following:

  • A PsyD or a PhD in Psychology
  • An internship
  • A post-doc or 1-year supervised professional experience after the internship
  • A passing score on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology
  • Completion of a dissertation or case study

States usually require all licensed therapists to complete the following:

  • A master’s degree
  • A range of 2,000-4,000 hours of post-degree supervised clinical experience
  • A successful exam score

Pros and Cons of a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology

Selecting a course of study is both exciting and challenging as you want to choose a major that inspires and engages while at the same time offering a clear path for a successful future.

You can choose from two different types of bachelor degrees in psychology:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (BA) – Liberal arts focus
  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology (BS) – Science focus

Whether you choose a degree that leans more heavily on liberal arts or on the sciences,  majoring in psychology has both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

The study of psychology guarantees an endless stream of interesting information that can be applied to all types of human interactions and engagement. Students can choose to concentrate in areas as diverse as

  • Developmental Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Health Psychology
  • Environmental Psychology

No matter what field you choose for a career, you’ll have a greater understanding of what motivates people and drives their behavior. The required curriculum also familiarizes you with scientific inquiry, research methodology, and statistics. These are skills that are highly valued.

Disadvantages:

If your goal is to work as a psychologist, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology will not get you there, but it’s a start. To become a clinical psychologist, you’ll need to continue your education and earn  both a master’s and doctoral degree . However, your bachelor’s in psychology is the foundational building block on which those advanced degrees are built.

Courses in Bachelor’s in Psychology Programs

Psychology is one of the most popular bachelor’s degrees available, and nearly every accredited college and university has a psychology program available. Though each academic institution has its own focus and curriculum, there are certain core courses that you can expect to take no matter which school you attend. These include:

  • Learning, Memory, and/or Cognition;
  • Sensation, Perception, and/or Biological Bases of Behavior
  • Human Development
  • Clinical, Abnormal, and/or Personality
  • Social Influences on Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors
  • Research Measurement, Design, and Methodology

Skills Learned in a Bachelor’s in Psychology Program

Students who choose to major in psychology expect to gain a deeper understanding of human behavior. Students will explore the history of psychology and its major schools of thought, and gain familiarity with research, data collection, and interpretation.

What you may not anticipate is that your pursuit of this knowledge also teaches essential skills that help you in your personal and professional lives and may even qualify you for higher levels of compensation. These include:

  • Communication skills  – In order to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, students demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to summarize research in a clear and concise way.
  • Critical thinking  – Psychology requires students to rely on evidence to interpret what they are seeing rather than intuition or anecdotal information. They learn to use tools including statistics, program evaluation, and research design.
  • Problem solving  – Students learn a variety of strategies and approaches to problem solving, including establishing practical steps needed to both identify a question and find an answer.
  • Collaboration  – While working on research projects, students learn to work effectively in a team by cooperating, sharing responsibilities, and listening and responding appropriately to the ideas of others. They also learn valuable management skills as they work with individuals or with teams, coordinating projects and prioritizing individual and team tasks.
  • Comfort with technology  – Students learn to use various operating systems and programs, including coding protocols and software applications for performing statistical analysis.

Bachelor of Arts vs Bachelor of Science in Psychology

Students seeking a bachelor’s degree in psychology can choose either a BA or BS. Though both provide the same core education, each has a slightly different focus. Some colleges provide students with a choice between the two, while other schools only offer one or the other.

For those hoping to use their degree in psychology as a launching pad for a non-psychology career, a BA in psychology is probably the best bet. As part of a liberal arts program, the bachelor of arts provides students with an overview of social, clinical, cognitive, and developmental psychology as well as the opportunity to take general electives in the humanities and social sciences.

For those hoping to work as clinical psychologists, therapists or elsewhere in the field of mental health, a bachelor of science provides the same general coursework with a greater emphasis on research and scientific inquiry. Rather than taking courses in the humanities, students design and conduct experiments, participate in laboratories, learn statistics and strengthen their mathematics skills.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Bachelor’s in Psychology?

Generally speaking, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology takes four years to complete, though timelines vary based on whether the coursework is pursued on a part-time or full-time basis, whether you take classes in person or online, whether you select an accelerated program, and whether you have transferable credits.

Is a PsyD or PhD better? Is a PsyD a doctor?

Someone possessing a PsyD is not a medical doctor. Rather, a PsyD is a Doctor of Psychology. In recognition of the expertise obtained from completing this rigorous course of study, holders of a PsyD are entitled to use the title “Doctor” if they so choose.

Is a PsyD or PhD better?

One isn’t better than the other, just different. Thus, the answer depends on individual interests and career aspirations. PhD programs focus heavily on research and often lead to working in an academic setting or in consulting. PsyD studies concentrate on applied aspects of psychology. Graduates generally work directly with patients.

What’s the difference between a PsyD and PhD?

Both are respected degrees in psychology. Students interested in providing psychological services often pursue a PsyD (doctor of psychology). Individuals looking to generate new knowledge through scientific research or who want to teach psychology at the post-secondary level frequently choose a PhD (doctor of philosophy) program. Both programs can prepare students to become licensed psychologists.

Is a PsyD easier than PhD?

  • Both degrees take a significant amount of time and commitment to complete. PsyD programs run 4-6 years, while PhD studies generally take 5-7. Completing an internship or other type of hands-on experience is a vital part of both. Likewise, both programs culminate in a doctoral project or dissertation. Whether one is “easier” than the other depends on the individual institution’s requirements and on what students themselves find difficult.

Is a PhD in Psychology a doctor?

Someone possessing a PhD is not a medical doctor. A PhD is a doctor of philosophy. In recognition of the expertise obtained from completing this rigorous course of study, holders of a PhD are entitled to use the title “Doctor” if they so choose.

Is a MS or PhD in Psychology better?

One isn’t better than the other, just different. Which degree to pursue depends on individual interests and career aspirations. Aspiring therapists and counselors often choose a master’s program. Those wishing to become licensed psychologists must complete a doctoral program. Also, PhD programs focus heavily on research and often lead to working in an academic setting or consulting.

What careers can I have with a psychology graduate degree?

Some career options for people who earn a graduate degree in psychology include marriage and family therapist, mental health counselor, substance abuse counselor, counseling psychologist, researcher, and psychology professor.

Can a PhD write prescriptions?

A person holding a PhD in psychology is not a medical doctor and usually cannot write prescriptions. A few states do allow psychologists with training in psychopharmacology to prescribe a limited number of psychiatric medications. The majority of prescriptions, however, are written out by psychiatrists since they are MDs.
