How to write the best college assignments.

By Lois Weldon

When it comes to writing assignments, it is difficult to find a conceptualized guide with clear and simple tips that are easy to follow. That’s exactly what this guide will provide: few simple tips on how to write great assignments, right when you need them. Some of these points will probably be familiar to you, but there is no harm in being reminded of the most important things before you start writing the assignments, which are usually determining on your credits.

The most important aspects: Outline and Introduction

Preparation is the key to success, especially when it comes to academic assignments. It is recommended to always write an outline before you start writing the actual assignment. The outline should include the main points of discussion, which will keep you focused throughout the work and will make your key points clearly defined. Outlining the assignment will save you a lot of time because it will organize your thoughts and make your literature searches much easier. The outline will also help you to create different sections and divide up the word count between them, which will make the assignment more organized.

The introduction is the next important part you should focus on. This is the part that defines the quality of your assignment in the eyes of the reader. The introduction must include a brief background on the main points of discussion, the purpose of developing such work and clear indications on how the assignment is being organized. Keep this part brief, within one or two paragraphs.

This is an example of including the above mentioned points into the introduction of an assignment that elaborates the topic of obesity reaching proportions:

Background : The twenty first century is characterized by many public health challenges, among which obesity takes a major part. The increasing prevalence of obesity is creating an alarming situation in both developed and developing regions of the world.

Structure and aim : This assignment will elaborate and discuss the specific pattern of obesity epidemic development, as well as its epidemiology. Debt, trade and globalization will also be analyzed as factors that led to escalation of the problem. Moreover, the assignment will discuss the governmental interventions that make efforts to address this issue.

Practical tips on assignment writing

Here are some practical tips that will keep your work focused and effective:

–         Critical thinking – Academic writing has to be characterized by critical thinking, not only to provide the work with the needed level, but also because it takes part in the final mark.

–         Continuity of ideas – When you get to the middle of assignment, things can get confusing. You have to make sure that the ideas are flowing continuously within and between paragraphs, so the reader will be enabled to follow the argument easily. Dividing the work in different paragraphs is very important for this purpose.

–         Usage of ‘you’ and ‘I’ – According to the academic writing standards, the assignments should be written in an impersonal language, which means that the usage of ‘you’ and ‘I’ should be avoided. The only acceptable way of building your arguments is by using opinions and evidence from authoritative sources.

–         Referencing – this part of the assignment is extremely important and it takes a big part in the final mark. Make sure to use either Vancouver or Harvard referencing systems, and use the same system in the bibliography and while citing work of other sources within the text.

–         Usage of examples – A clear understanding on your assignment’s topic should be provided by comparing different sources and identifying their strengths and weaknesses in an objective manner. This is the part where you should show how the knowledge can be applied into practice.

–         Numbering and bullets – Instead of using numbering and bullets, the academic writing style prefers the usage of paragraphs.

–         Including figures and tables – The figures and tables are an effective way of conveying information to the reader in a clear manner, without disturbing the word count. Each figure and table should have clear headings and you should make sure to mention their sources in the bibliography.

–         Word count – the word count of your assignment mustn’t be far above or far below the required word count. The outline will provide you with help in this aspect, so make sure to plan the work in order to keep it within the boundaries.

The importance of an effective conclusion

The conclusion of your assignment is your ultimate chance to provide powerful arguments that will impress the reader. The conclusion in academic writing is usually expressed through three main parts:

–         Stating the context and aim of the assignment

–         Summarizing the main points briefly

–         Providing final comments with consideration of the future (discussing clear examples of things that can be done in order to improve the situation concerning your topic of discussion).

Extremely useful tip for students wanting to score well on their assignments. I concur with the writer that writing an outline before ACTUALLY starting to write assignments is extremely important. I have observed students who start off quite well but they tend to lose focus in between which causes them to lose marks. So an outline helps them to maintain the theme focused.

An Assignment about Turnitin.<br />

By Brian Martin – Project Officer Plagiarism S<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ballarat</strong>.<br />

This commentary has been created to demonstrate how Turnitin can be used to<br />

identify passages <strong>of</strong> text that are not original and may require rework by the student<br />

such as: rewriting, in-text citation, referencing and/or paraphrasing. This work has<br />

been submitted to Turnitin and all examples <strong>of</strong> Turnitin functionality are drawn from<br />

within it or other similar demonstration <strong>assignment</strong>s.<br />

I am convinced <strong>of</strong> the usefulness <strong>of</strong> Turnitin to students in improving their work and<br />

raising awareness <strong>of</strong> academic writing standards. There are two main areas where<br />

Turnitin is particularly effective:<br />

1. Where a student is early in their academic career it brings to attention, in a<br />

visual and interactive way that non-original material within <strong>assignment</strong> needs<br />

to be acknowledged or rewritten prior to it being submitted for final<br />

assessment. Moreover, it is extremely useful to see Turnitin identify passages<br />

<strong>of</strong> words that have been substituted and do not constitute correct paraphrasing.<br />

2. Where the assessment task becomes more complex, lengthy and research<br />

based the value <strong>of</strong> Turnitin increases as a self-checking tool. This being to<br />

ensure that references and citations are not inadvertently omitted; much like<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> spelling and grammar checking.<br />

The Originality Score<br />

Turnitin calculates an originality score based on a comparison between the text within<br />

a student <strong>assignment</strong> and the content within the Turnitin database – comprised <strong>of</strong><br />

journal articles, the internet and previously submitted student <strong>assignment</strong>s. This score<br />

in isolation cannot be used to infer whether <strong>of</strong> not a student has plagiarised material<br />

within their <strong>assignment</strong>. The assessor must review the content <strong>of</strong> the Originality<br />

Report when marking the <strong>assignment</strong> to make any conclusions about whether a<br />

student has followed correct academic writing standards. These can be viewed at<br />

www.ballarat.edu.au/aasp/student/learning_support/generalguide.<br />

Turnitin colour codes the originality score percentage to infer higher levels <strong>of</strong><br />

attention be paid to red and amber rather than green scores. This is potentially<br />

misleading as the volume <strong>of</strong> unoriginal material that may be acceptable within an<br />

assessment task is completely dependent on: the language <strong>of</strong> the discipline or<br />

nomenclature, the unit being studied and most importantly the assessment task itself.<br />

For example; one would expect a much higher percentage <strong>of</strong> non-original material<br />

within a literature review or task set to summarise a chapter from a text book than if a<br />

student was requested to write a creative essay. In general terms, subjects that tend to<br />

be technical in nature, such as human movement and science, and have a narrow<br />

vernacular, exhibit higher originality score percentages (on average) than those <strong>of</strong> the<br />

humanities, where the language used is much closer to plain English.

The originality score is quite simply a percentage calculation <strong>of</strong> unoriginal material<br />

within a student’s work. A long <strong>assignment</strong> could contain many hundred plagiarised<br />

words and still be ‘green’. For example, this <strong>assignment</strong>, which contains passages <strong>of</strong><br />

deliberately plagiarised material, only recorded a 21% match to the Turntin database.<br />

Turnitin also includes this list <strong>of</strong> items in its initial calculation <strong>of</strong> the originality score:<br />

legitimately quoted and referenced material;<br />

coincidental matches to previous works or common usage terms/expressions;<br />

regularly submitted material for a class group such as the <strong>assignment</strong> question<br />

or a source quote to investigate; and<br />

the reference list.<br />

Therefore a student should review the originality report in detail and use its<br />

functionality to exclude quoted material and references from the calculation and<br />

mentally ignore legitimate or coincidental source matches. This way the student can<br />

consider how to address the remaining non-original material.<br />

The Originality Report<br />

The Originality Report conforms to a consistent format, the student <strong>assignment</strong> –<br />

within highlighted/matched passages <strong>of</strong> text is included in the left hand side <strong>of</strong> the<br />

window. The right hand side <strong>of</strong> the window contains the sources within the Turnitin<br />

database matching to text within the student’s <strong>assignment</strong>.

The matched text is colour coded to each matching source for ease <strong>of</strong> reading; these<br />

colours have no meaning beyond being a user-aid. Clicking the numerical icon next<br />

to each matched source allows the user to scroll through the <strong>assignment</strong> to each<br />

instance <strong>of</strong> that source being used within the <strong>assignment</strong> text.<br />

This function becomes increasingly useful where the <strong>assignment</strong> uses a particular<br />

source many times throughout the text – <strong>of</strong>ten the case in research based work.<br />

Where a thorough investigation is needed, usually where the student has made an<br />

attempt to paraphrase from a particular source, the user may click on the highlighted<br />

text within the <strong>assignment</strong> to bring up the source material in its original context. Note:<br />

for privacy & copyright reasons this is not possible for matches to previously<br />

submitted student <strong>assignment</strong>s stored on the Turnitin database.<br />

The user may also click directly through to web-pages in their original form, which<br />

Example <strong>of</strong> where Turnitin matches common material used within a group <strong>of</strong><br />

students asked to submit <strong>assignment</strong>s.<br />

This leads to an inflation <strong>of</strong> originality scores between classmates. This material can<br />

be ignored.<br />

Example <strong>of</strong> where Turnitin matches referenced quoted material.<br />

Many economists are convinced the radical policies <strong>of</strong> President Franklin Roosevelt<br />

ended the Great Depression in the United States. Eggertsson (2008) is convinced,<br />

“the recovery was driven by a shift in expectations. This shift was triggered by<br />

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s (FDR) policy actions,” specifically<br />

Eggertsson contends that; “Roosevelt expanded real and deficit spending which<br />

helped make his policy objective credible.”<br />

We can see that Turnitin matches to this source because in the first instance all nonoriginal<br />

material is highlighted and included in the calculation <strong>of</strong> the originality score.<br />

While this may appear on first consideration to be unhelpful, the inclusion <strong>of</strong> quoted<br />

material by Turnitin with the originality score calculation does have a useful purpose.<br />

This allows students to benchmark the amount <strong>of</strong> quoted material used within their<br />

<strong>assignment</strong> (to support their argument) against the expectations <strong>of</strong> the lecturer on the<br />

volume <strong>of</strong> direct quotes they consider acceptable compared to the student’s voice.<br />

This depends on the nature and objectives <strong>of</strong> the assessment. Most academics are<br />

comfortable with students using quoted material to support rather than make their<br />

In general, use <strong>of</strong> direct quoted material comprising <strong>of</strong> 0 - 20% <strong>of</strong> the overall word<br />

count has been considered acceptable, however you should confirm the specific<br />

expectation <strong>of</strong> your lecturer. Students and lecturers should discuss these expectations<br />

at the time the assessment task is issued. For clarity, in the above example Turnitin<br />

has identified the unoriginal material but not the actual source used – this will be<br />

discussed further later in the document.<br />

Use the “exclude quoted function” to gain a rough idea as to the percentage <strong>of</strong> quoted<br />

material that was contained within the <strong>assignment</strong> i.e. the amount the percentage<br />

decreased when the function was used.<br />

Potential unintentional or intentional plagiarism examples<br />

These paragraphs contain material that needs attention before the student hands in the<br />

final <strong>assignment</strong>. The examples contain unacknowledged material that has been<br />

included without appropriate in text citation.<br />

When I talk about what makes a good runner, I always need to emphasise the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> mental toughness. To illustrate this, I have developed a mental<br />

Toughness Scale. To assess an overall 1-dimensional measure <strong>of</strong> mental toughness, I<br />

asked participants to rate their toughness on a scale <strong>of</strong> 1 to 20 (1 = low, 20 = high).<br />

Mental toughness was explained to participants as the ability to consistently perform<br />

toward the upper range <strong>of</strong> their talents and skills, regardless <strong>of</strong> competitive<br />

circumstances.<br />

Technology is changing the way we teach and learn. If school history is to play a<br />

major role in shaping the consciousness <strong>of</strong> today’s iPod-ed, YouTubed, Instant<br />

Messengerized, MySpaced American youth, it must find new ways to engage the<br />

cultural curriculum that engulfs them. Failing to do so only guarantees school<br />

history’s irrelevance into the next century.

The courses <strong>of</strong> action open to the student are to completely rewrite the identified<br />

passages, include the material within double quotes with appropriate in text citation or<br />

paraphrase the material with appropriate citation.<br />

Paraphrasing examples<br />

Probably Turnitin’s greatest strength is its ability to highlight where a student has<br />

either deliberately tried to disguise material used by word replacement or<br />

misunderstood the requirements for correct paraphrasing. This can be particularly<br />

useful for in class discussion, where the student and teacher can see the examples<br />

highlighted by Turnitin and agree a course <strong>of</strong> action that the student must take to<br />

correct the work. This approach was successful for first year or bridging program<br />

students, who thought they had “changed the text enough” and were surprised that it<br />

was still matched to the original source. There was no apparent attempt to deceive,<br />

merely a lack <strong>of</strong> understanding <strong>of</strong> academic writing standards.<br />

The following passages illustrate Turnitin’s ability to highlight incorrectly<br />

paraphrasing and/or attempted word substitution.<br />

Word substitution<br />

Accountancy or accounting is the art <strong>of</strong> communicating financial information about a<br />

business entity to users such as shareholders and managers. The communication is<br />

generally in the form <strong>of</strong> financial statements that show in money terms that show the<br />

economic resources under the control <strong>of</strong> management. Such financial data is mainly<br />

used by lenders, managers, investors, tax authorities, and other decision makers to<br />

make resource distribution decisions between and inside companies, organizations,<br />

and community agencies. It involves the process <strong>of</strong> recording, checking, and reporting<br />

on the value <strong>of</strong> assets, liabilities, income, and expenses.<br />

Note: the actual source <strong>of</strong> this material was Wikipedia.

Incorrect paraphrasing<br />

Since the mid twentieth century, change agents have implemented many policies that<br />

shift responsibility over public education between different levels <strong>of</strong> government<br />

(McDermott, 2007).<br />

The end to the Great Depression in the United States was caused by changing<br />

expectations driven through President Franklin Roosevelt’s policy decisions; he<br />

increased real and deficit expenditure making his policy objective believable”<br />

(Eggertsson, 2008).<br />

Death <strong>of</strong> a Salesman made Arthur Miller and his character Willy Loman famous. The<br />

play is in juxtaposition to Aristotle's characterisation <strong>of</strong> tragedy as the fall <strong>of</strong> a great<br />

man: though Loman certainly has Hamartia, a tragic weakness or mistake, his<br />

downfall is that <strong>of</strong> an ordinary person. Like Sophocles' Oedipus in Oedipus the King,<br />

Loman's flaw comes down to a lack <strong>of</strong> self-reflection; unlike Oedipus, Loman's<br />

downfall threatens not the city but a single, average household. In this sense, Miller's<br />

play is a democratisation <strong>of</strong> the ancient form <strong>of</strong> tragedy; the play's protagonist is<br />

obsessed with greatness, and his downfall happens because <strong>of</strong> his self delusion <strong>of</strong><br />

himself as being capable <strong>of</strong> greatness. (Author unknown (2009). Wikipedia. Death <strong>of</strong><br />

a Salesman. Retrieved May 26, 2009 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_<strong>of</strong>_a_Salesman<br />

It is worth considering that where Turnitin detects sufficient similarity to identify the<br />

original material that it suggests to the student they have not sufficiently changed the<br />

expression <strong>of</strong> the original author’s idea.

Example <strong>of</strong> where Turnitin matches to a source that is not the original or actual<br />

source used by the student<br />

This example shows how Turnitin can match non-original material within an<br />

<strong>assignment</strong> to a source that was not actually used by the student. This tends to occur<br />

when the original source is not contained within the Turnitin database; however,<br />

material from those sources has been used in a student <strong>assignment</strong>, website or journal<br />

that is contained within Turnitin.<br />

Plyometric training has been shown to improve the economy <strong>of</strong> runners, therefore<br />

allowing them to run faster for longer without expending additional energy.<br />

(Saunders, 2007) “A specific type <strong>of</strong> strength training, known as explosive-strength<br />

training or plyometric training, has been reported to invoke specific neural<br />

adaptations such as an increased activation <strong>of</strong> the motor units, with less muscle<br />

hypertrophy.”<br />

In this example Turnitin has matched the material against two previously submitted<br />

student <strong>assignment</strong>s. So we can see that Turnitin cannot be used as a referencing tool,<br />

because in many cases Turnitin finds matches to material not actually used by the<br />

student. However, this does not diminish the value <strong>of</strong> the Turnitin evaluation process<br />

for students and teachers. The fact that unoriginal material is identified is important<br />

enough in itself to justify the purpose <strong>of</strong> submitting the work to Turnitin. It is then up<br />

to the student to ensure that the material is appropriately included, and where needed,<br />

referenced to the actual source(s) used.<br />

Nomenclature, spurious or common usage match examples<br />

This paragraph contains example(s) <strong>of</strong> what may be termed the language <strong>of</strong> the<br />

discipline or nomenclature. It also highlights that <strong>of</strong>ten Turnitin will highlight very<br />

small 1% or

These examples demonstrate the conflict between having functionality and a large<br />

database capable <strong>of</strong> finding small amounts relevant unoriginal material and the<br />

identification <strong>of</strong> unhelpful, coincidental matches that falsely inflate the originality<br />

score. However, care must be taken not to ignore small matches that add up to a<br />

larger whole, this may indicate inappropriate use throughout and <strong>assignment</strong> <strong>of</strong> a<br />

single source without proper acknowledgement. There is a need for students to<br />

interpret the originality score with care and avoid reliance on the headline score as the<br />

primary focus or means <strong>of</strong> identifying potential issues.<br />

Group work<br />

Where a group <strong>assignment</strong> is completed by students that leads to a single group<br />

submission, only one member <strong>of</strong> the group should submit the <strong>assignment</strong> to Turnitin –<br />

this is true <strong>of</strong> the first and any subsequent draft submissions. If more than one<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the group submits the <strong>assignment</strong> to Turnitin then a false 100% match will<br />

be reported between the group members. A similar result will occur if a different<br />

group member submits the first and second draft <strong>of</strong> an <strong>assignment</strong>.<br />

References<br />

The reference list is <strong>of</strong>ten common to classmates and to others studying the discipline,<br />

therefore its inclusion in the originality score calculation can artificially inflate the<br />

score. Use the exclude bibliography function to remove matching text found below<br />

the reference or bibliography header.<br />

2013 Edition #2 June - University of Ballarat

An Assignment about Turnitin. By Brian Martin – Project Officer Plagiarism S<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ballarat</strong>. This commentary has been created to demonstrate how Turnitin can be used to identify passages <strong>of</strong> text that are not original and may require rework by the student such as: rewriting, in-text citation, referencing and/or paraphrasing. This work has been submitted to Turnitin and all examples <strong>of</strong> Turnitin functionality are drawn from within it or other similar demonstration <strong>assignment</strong>s. I am convinced <strong>of</strong> the usefulness <strong>of</strong> Turnitin to students in improving their work and raising awareness <strong>of</strong> academic writing standards. There are two main areas where Turnitin is particularly effective: 1. Where a student is early in their academic career it brings to attention, in a visual and interactive way that non-original material within <strong>assignment</strong> needs to be acknowledged or rewritten prior to it being submitted for final assessment. Moreover, it is extremely useful to see Turnitin identify passages <strong>of</strong> words that have been substituted and do not constitute correct paraphrasing. 2. Where the assessment task becomes more complex, lengthy and research based the value <strong>of</strong> Turnitin increases as a self-checking tool. This being to ensure that references and citations are not inadvertently omitted; much like the process <strong>of</strong> spelling and grammar checking. The Originality Score Turnitin calculates an originality score based on a comparison between the text within a student <strong>assignment</strong> and the content within the Turnitin database – comprised <strong>of</strong> journal articles, the internet and previously submitted student <strong>assignment</strong>s. This score in isolation cannot be used to infer whether <strong>of</strong> not a student has plagiarised material within their <strong>assignment</strong>. The assessor must review the content <strong>of</strong> the Originality Report when marking the <strong>assignment</strong> to make any conclusions about whether a student has followed correct academic writing standards. These can be viewed at www.ballarat.edu.au/aasp/student/learning_support/generalguide. Turnitin colour codes the originality score percentage to infer higher levels <strong>of</strong> attention be paid to red and amber rather than green scores. This is potentially misleading as the volume <strong>of</strong> unoriginal material that may be acceptable within an assessment task is completely dependent on: the language <strong>of</strong> the discipline or nomenclature, the unit being studied and most importantly the assessment task itself. For example; one would expect a much higher percentage <strong>of</strong> non-original material within a literature review or task set to summarise a chapter from a text book than if a student was requested to write a creative essay. In general terms, subjects that tend to be technical in nature, such as human movement and science, and have a narrow vernacular, exhibit higher originality score percentages (on average) than those <strong>of</strong> the humanities, where the language used is much closer to plain English.

Introduction to Planning your Assignment

This image shows a stack of three building blocks. The top block is the letter A on a blue background, the middle block is the letter B on a red background and the bottom block is the letter C on a purple background.

During your studies you will be required to submit assignments which may include essays, reports and reflective writing. It is important that you spend time planning your assignment before you begin to write your first draft which will help to ensure that you answer the question and meet the assessment criteria.  This section will provide you with information regarding understanding the assignment question, managing your time, searching for relevant academic research and writing an assignment plan.

Your programme will require your assignments to be structured and formatted in a particular way.  You should always follow any instructions or guidance that you have been issued with, if you are unsure, please contact your Personal Tutor or Student Support Officer for advice.

It is important that you read the assignment question several times to ensure that you fully understand what you are being asked to do and avoid losing valuable marks.

Some students find it helpful to highlight the keywords in the assignment task including any verbs such as Assess and Evaluate.

The Impact that the use of Electri c C ars has on the  Environment

Also carefully read the assessment criteria, find out what the word count is, the referencing style that you need to use and how the assignment needs to be presented.

If you are unsure about what you are being asked to do you need to speak to your lecturer or tutor.

It is important that you plan when you will be able to work on an assignment to ensure that you make the most of the time available and hand your work in on time. You could use an online calendar to help you manage your time and the assignment writing process can be divided into the following steps:

  • Understand the assignment question
  • Search for information
  • Plan the assignment
  • Write the first draft of the assignment
  • Edit assignment
  • Proofread assignment
  • Submit assignment

Further information is also available from the Managing your Time page.

This image shows a man sat at a desk which has a pair of headphones, a cup of coffee, tablet, and paper on display.

This stage involves searching for print and online sources that will provide you with the information that you need. You could start by thinking about what you already know about the subject.  A useful starting point could be your lecture notes and the module reading list.

The  Online Library  website provides you with access to different resources that you can search to find both print and online resources.

Further information is available from the Academic Research section.

Step by Step Instructions to Prepare IGNOU Assignment

Candidates are requested to read each point carefully to prevent from making mistakes while writing the assignment of IGNOU. We have created the instructions point wise so that you can read and understand them easily.

Point-1: Use only foolscap size paper or A4 size paper to write your assignments. Do not use thin paper.

Point-2: Leave at least one or a few lines after completing your one answer so that the evaluator writes a useful comment on blank areas.

Point-3: We recommend using ruled paper instead of blank paper to write your assignment because it is also advised by the IGNOU Officials .

Point-4: Candidates can use a Black or Blue pen to write their assignments for any TEE session.

Point-5: Candidates are not allowed to use the Red pen or other colour pen.

Point-6: Better handwriting also benefits for best marking in your assignment work.

Point-7: Candidates have to write their assignments with their hand which means only handwritten assignments are accepted by IGNOU.

Point-8: Do not print or type your assignments with the help of a computer which is not allowed.

Point-9: They cannot copy their answer from any units/blocks given by the university. If you copied any answer then you will get zero marks for that copied question.

Point-10: Candidates have to write an assignment solution with their own help, if you copied any assignments from other students then your assignment will be rejected by the centre.

Point-11: Prepare or write each course assignment separately. Do not write all assignments in one set.

Point-12: Write each question before writing an answer so you don’t need to attach a question paper while submitting the assignment.

Point-13: After finishing the work of assignment writing, use a paper file and arrange all your assignments in a proper manner. ( Note: Plastic files will not be accepted by the university in any circumstances).

Point-14: Candidate must be sent their complete assignments to the coordinator of the allotted study centre. You cannot send it to any other IGNOU centre like Regional Centre, Evaluation Division, and Registration for evaluation.

Also Read: How To Submit IGNOU Assignment Online?

Point-15: It is noted that the candidates have to submit their assignment personally so you can’t send it through email, post or courier.

  • IGNOU Regional Centre List
  • IGNOU Study Centre List

Point-16: Don’t forget to receive the receipt for the submission of the assignment.

Point-17: After submitting your assignments to the coordinator, they send an acknowledgement to the study centre.

Point-18: If you have applied to change your study centre then you have to send your assignments to the original centre until you did not get any confirmation from the University of the study centre change. If you got a notice from the university for a successful change of centre then you can submit it to the new centre.

That’s It.

We hope that the above points will be helpful for those students who are confused or have no idea that what to write on the 1st page and what instructions needed to follow to successfully submit the assignments to IGNOU. We are sure that you got your solution from here after reading this article.

We request to all our candidates that please read and refer to every point given above and send your proper IGNOU Assignment solution so that it easily accepted and approved by the university and you can get a permit to appear in your TEE Examination.

Assignment Agreement Template

Updated February 1, 2024 Reviewed by Brooke Davis

An assignment agreement is a legal document that transfers rights, responsibilities, and benefits from one party (the “assignor”) to another (the “assignee”). You can use it to reassign debt, real estate, intellectual property, leases, insurance policies, and government contracts.

What Is an Assignment Agreement?

What to include in an assignment agreement, how to assign a contract, how to write an assignment agreement, assignment agreement sample.

trademark assignment agreement template

Partnership Interest

An assignment agreement effectively transfers the rights and obligations of a person or entity under an initial contract to another. The original party is the assignor, and the assignee takes on the contract’s duties and benefits.

It’s often a requirement to let the other party in the original deal know the contract is being transferred. It’s essential to create this form thoughtfully, as a poorly written assignment agreement may leave the assignor obligated to certain aspects of the deal.

The most common use of an assignment agreement occurs when the assignor no longer can or wants to continue with a contract. Instead of leaving the initial party or breaking the agreement, the assignor can transfer the contract to another individual or entity.

For example, imagine a small residential trash collection service plans to close its operations. Before it closes, the business brokers a deal to send its accounts to a curbside pickup company providing similar services. After notifying account holders, the latter company continues the service while receiving payment.

Create a thorough assignment agreement by including the following information:

  • Effective Date:  The document must indicate when the transfer of rights and obligations occurs.
  • Parties:  Include the full name and address of the assignor, assignee, and obligor (if required).
  • Assignment:  Provide details that identify the original contract being assigned.
  • Third-Party Approval: If the initial contract requires the approval of the obligor, note the date the approval was received.
  • Signatures:  Both parties must sign and date the printed assignment contract template once completed. If a notary is required, wait until you are in the presence of the official and present identification before signing. Failure to do so may result in having to redo the assignment contract.

Review the Contract Terms

Carefully review the terms of the existing contract. Some contracts may have specific provisions regarding assignment. Check for any restrictions or requirements related to assigning the contract.

Check for Anti-Assignment Clauses

Some contracts include anti-assignment clauses that prohibit or restrict the ability to assign the contract without the consent of the other party. If there’s such a clause, you may need the consent of the original parties to proceed.

Determine Assignability

Ensure that the contract is assignable. Some contracts, especially those involving personal services or unique skills, may not be assignable without the other party’s agreement.

Get Consent from the Other Party (if Required)

If the contract includes an anti-assignment clause or requires consent for assignment, seek written consent from the other party. This can often be done through a formal amendment to the contract.

Prepare an Assignment Agreement

Draft an assignment agreement that clearly outlines the transfer of rights and obligations from the assignor (the party assigning the contract) to the assignee (the party receiving the assignment). Include details such as the names of the parties, the effective date of the assignment, and the specific rights and obligations being transferred.

Include Original Contract Information

Attach a copy of the original contract or reference its key terms in the assignment agreement. This helps in clearly identifying the contract being assigned.

Execution of the Assignment Agreement

Both the assignor and assignee should sign the assignment agreement. Signatures should be notarized if required by the contract or local laws.

Notice to the Other Party

Provide notice of the assignment to the non-assigning party. This can be done formally through a letter or as specified in the contract.

File the Assignment

File the assignment agreement with the appropriate parties or entities as required. This may include filing with the original contracting party or relevant government authorities.

Communicate with Third Parties

Inform any relevant third parties, such as suppliers, customers, or service providers, about the assignment to ensure a smooth transition.

Keep Copies for Records

Keep copies of the assignment agreement, original contract, and any related communications for your records.

Here’s a list of steps on how to write an assignment agreement:

Step 1 – List the Assignor’s and Assignee’s Details

List all of the pertinent information regarding the parties involved in the transfer. This information includes their full names, addresses, phone numbers, and other relevant contact information.

This step clarifies who’s transferring the initial contract and who will take on its responsibilities.

Step 2 – Provide Original Contract Information

Describing and identifying the contract that is effectively being reassigned is essential. This step avoids any confusion after the transfer has been completed.

Step 3 – State the Consideration

Provide accurate information regarding the amount the assignee pays to assume the contract. This figure should include taxes and any relevant peripheral expenses. If the assignee will pay the consideration over a period, indicate the method and installments.

Step 4 – Provide Any Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions of any agreement are crucial to a smooth transaction. You must cover issues such as dispute resolution, governing law, obligor approval, and any relevant clauses.

Step 5 – Obtain Signatures

Both parties must sign the agreement to ensure it is legally binding and that they have read and understood the contract. If a notary is required, wait to sign off in their presence.
