Feedback from our course participants:

I am new to the housing finance market and this course was very useful in helping me understand the basics and the more slightly complicated stuff. Fantastic delivery of the course which will help me join the conversations.

Housing Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa,  2021. Dept. of Construction Economics and Management, partnership between the UCT Nedbank Urban Real Estate Research Unit, Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, supported by the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa

Every aspect of the online course experience worked well. It felt more personal instead of just being a face in a classroom which made it easier to interact. The lecturer welcomed comments and conversation about a variety of topics which was much appreciated. His knowledge is awesome and listening to these lectures, viewing the slides and interacting online from any location made attendance very convenient and easy.

Design of High-Rise Buildings , 2020. Department of Civil Engineering

The lecturer was well organised and encouraged participation. His input was very helpful.

Introduction to Design Computing , 2021. School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics

Why CPD at UCT?

About uct and the ebe faculty.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is the top university in Africa according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. Each department has teaching staff who are experts in their fields and are active researchers; UCT has a large number of engineering research-rated academics.

The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment (EBE) has strong links with industry and government, which commission and fund significant research projects. Our commitment to teaching and research excellence is matched by our commitment to addressing social challenges through various research interests.

The faculty has an illustrious legacy, with many of its alumni occupying powerful positions in the engineering and built environment industry, as well as the business world and politics.

The CPD Programme

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme offers short courses, workshops and conferences as ongoing education for professionals.

Engineering professionals registered in South Africa are required to undertake CPD activities in terms of agreements between the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and international engineering bodies.

This requirement is aimed at helping professionals keep abreast of developments and knowledge in their fields of expertise to maintain and demonstrate their competence. This is also a requirement for the renewal of their professional registration.

Who should attend?

Although many of the courses are specifically designed for professionals, students and the general public will greatly benefit from attending many of the CPD courses.

Generally, there are no formal academic qualification entrance requirements to CPD courses. In some cases, some prerequisite knowledge may be required. A certificate of attendance or of successful completion (where an examination is passed) is normally issued.

Some courses may be undertaken outside of normal working hours, while others may require attendance for a number of days on a full-time basis. Courses may also be run on an in-house basis for companies, if requested.

One of the core aspects of our vision as a faculty is to develop outstanding graduates and scholars, who contribute to society and address socioeconomic challenges through their work. I believe that our UCT graduate engineers and professionals of the built environment are ideally equipped to rise to the complex challenges and global problems of the 21 st  century. What past students think

Dr Rachel Matteau Matsha

Senior Lecturer, Durban University of Technology (DUT)

The Teaching With Technology course was relevant, informative, and rewarding. The content provided me with concrete tools to use in the classroom and also offered an opportunity to reflect on my practices as a university lecturer. My intention for this course was to learn new strategies to make my online classes more engaging and interactive, and I came out of this course with a list of ideas and tools to do exactly that. I was most impressed with the course material; it is well researched, clear, relevant, and interesting to read. The tutors were always available and provided constructive feedback. What I liked most was the way the course was conducted. It modelled various online T&L strategies that I aim to put into practice. I strongly recommend this course to all educators.

online education courses in cape town

The Faculty of Education is located on the Mowbray and Wellington campuses of CPUT. Our core business is teacher education, with the majority of our students in initial or pre-service teacher education, through the four-year Bachelor of Education programmes. The rest of our academic offerings address educator development needs at pre-service and in-service level, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, through the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (for those who want to join the teaching profession after acquiring a recognised qualification in another field of study)Prospective students with qualifications and experience in the Education field, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, the Advanced Certificate in Education, and Honours, Master’s and doctoral degrees which are also found in our programme mix and ladder of learning.

Our Faculty is the biggest teacher education provider in the Western Cape, with students from all over the country. At the Mowbray campus instruction is offered in English, while at the Wellington campus the undergraduate programmes are offered in Afrikaans.

As educators, we pride ourselves for belonging to what is known as a noble profession - a service-oriented profession. The Faculty thrives on paying it forward to learning communities. We acknowledge the responsibility we have to influence the future through the young people we train and develop, and the even younger people they will train and develop. We are also aware of the challenges that face the education sector in our country, from inadequate teaching spaces, limited access to education, under-qualified educators and education managers, absence of commitment and professionalism in some sectors of our profession, and a generally underperforming education system.

We look at these challenges as our challenges, and believe that with our dedicated staff, relevant academic offerings, and the necessary support we get from our university, the Western Cape Education Department and the national Department of Higher Education and Training, our contribution in this regard is making a difference, not just to this Province but to the nation. We thus invite those who share in this vision, and want to be part of this contribution, to apply and register with us for one of the many options in educator development.
