Graphic Design Masters Theses
RISD’s graduate program in Graphic Design prepares students for professional practice by emphasizing the roles of social context, media and aesthetics in the production of visible language systems. As a reflection of the discipline itself, the program encourages a nimble and intelligent response to constant change and burgeoning technology, while building a strong foundation of formal, aesthetic and analytical knowledge.
Individual thesis investigation is central to the final year of MFA study and culminates in the comprehensive presentation of work representing an original voice for visual and verbal expression of design thinking. The thesis should be equal parts exploration, explanation, provocation and contribution. Guest critics participate throughout the year and in the year-end thesis review, which offers a forum for critical dialogue focused on each student’s contribution to the field of graphic design. All MFA candidates also submit a written thesis and as a group participate in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.

Recognition and denotation of photographic manipulation.
By: Kathryn Lynn Voith
The media is often blamed for poor body image and low self-esteem due to its use of Photoshop and other editing programs to create a beauty ideal that many consider unrealistic and unattainable. Previous research has shown that an understanding of manipulation used in these images tempers the negative effects, but no research has been done to determine the average level of media literacy when viewing manipulated photographs. This study surveys a college-aged audience to determine their ability to identify photographic manipulation and their acceptance of different levels of editing, and determine whether or not a photographic denotation system indicating manipulation is needed in the industry... Symmetrical Speech: Qualitative Textual Analysis In Humanist Digital Design
By: Alan Walker
There is a widely held colloquialism that iPhones have more computing power than NASA's Apollo mission control systems. How a person sorts out the technicalities of this assertion is beyond the point; most people can agree that modern computers provide dynamic opportunities for a range of applications. One such application is research and inquiry in the field of the Humanities including history, literature, and culture. Specifically, academics studying textually based, artifacts past and present. People may now input a body of text such as a speech or poem into a digital tool that will output a reading of minuscule detail. During the interaction the researcher can easily discover: the frequency of certain words, recurring parts of speech, and even emotional sentimentality... Read more.

Organic Web Design: Exploring Nature as Metaphor in Responsive Web Design
By: Alex Catanese
The rise of responsive design as an approach to web design in the last decade has shaped the ways that designers consider the web as a medium. As this approach has developed, its practitioners have begun forming patterns and templates which might limit alternative modes of thinking in the field. Criticism of this approach is still in its early stages, leaving open an opportunity for reflection, expansion, and the exploration of alternative modes of thinking and making for considering the medium. The web browser has properties which are inherently flexible, fluid, and adaptive—begging for a parallel exploration of flexible, fluid, adaptive systems as external inspiration for web design... Graduate Graphic Design
Mfa graphic design, degree type, availability.
The Master of Fine Arts Graphic Design program provides a two-year, sequenced studio approach to advanced design thinking and problem solving for visual communication, preparing students to thrive in a dynamic, creative professional environment.
During the first year of study, students are challenged to articulate a design perspective and method through studio projects, emphasizing the key principles of form, communication, authorship, audience, and medium. Students are invited to think creatively and strategically—developing content, defining an audience, and determining an optimum communication platform. This development of a body of work culminates in the second year of study with the Master’s thesis, a personally driven creative research project that presents the individual student’s visual and critical methodology and examines topics relevant to contemporary design practice.

Program of Study
The Graphic Design studio forms the program’s core. All graduate Graphic Design students are expected to demonstrate a deep commitment to their design practice by maintaining regular studio habits. During the first year of study, students are challenged to develop a design methodology and hone their skills and interests. Through a combination of carefully defined and open-ended projects, first-year graduate students articulate a design perspective and method through studio projects, emphasizing the key principles of form, communication, authorship, audience, and medium.
The second year of graduate study is devoted primarily to research and production of the Master’s thesis. Presented as a group exhibition at the Boston University Art Galleries , the thesis student ensures that each graduate student produces an original contribution to the field of Graphic Design at the conclusion of their two years of study.

FACULTY FEATURE
Designer and educator with over two decades of experience, James Grady , assistant professor of graphic design at BU School of Visual Arts and creative director at BU Spark! , came to BU with an interdisciplinary career leading design projects for clients such as Google, Nike, and Samsung.
In CFA’s Faculty Feature series, Grady talks with CFA about the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Thesis experience, what faculty look for in MFA applicants, and the teaching philosophy of sending graduates into the world to make a difference in society through the lens of graphic design.
Our programs are built to assist students through the long term, not just create a portfolio style to get a job. We want them to have a long-range philosophy and process that they can adapt to the current climate and also to five, ten, or twenty years from now. It’s not just about learning Illustrator and making logos. That’s fun and I love doing that but that does not define graphic design. James Grady, Assistant Professor

“My teaching philosophy posits that to be a successful designer, one must be a fearless maker. The more students produce, the more mistakes they will make: a process that can lead to profound discoveries and personal growth. In the classroom, the strategies I employ combine practical, real-world knowledge with new and experimental ways of looking, thinking, and talking about graphic design. When developing any assignment or course, I consistently ask, ‘What is it that inspires and motivates students to create more work? What can this class provide that will help students be more prolific?’
“One goal that I set for students—and myself—is to be genuinely engaged with both the work and the process. I believe that the marriage of research and active teaching creates a fertile space for meaningful contributions to the field of design.”
– Christopher Sleboda , Associate Professor of Art, Graphic Design

Crafting a graphic design dissertation can be a challenging endeavor due to the limited array of available topics. Selecting the right topic is a crucial decision that demands careful consideration. Failing to choose wisely among the graphic design dissertation topics could result in a paper that falls short of your professor’s expectations.
The process of topic selection necessitates thorough brainstorming and contemplation. Therefore, before finalizing your choice, it’s advisable to follow a systematic approach. The upcoming section will provide you with guidance on selecting the optimal topic.
How to Opt for the Perfect Graphic Design Dissertation Topic for Your Research?
Choosing a topic at random from the available options is far from ideal. It lacks the logical framework required to present your ideas coherently, often leading to a lack of in-depth knowledge. To navigate this process effectively, follow the steps outlined below, or consider seeking online dissertation assistance to avoid any roadblocks.
Delve Deep into the Realm of Graphic Design
The initial step toward crafting a compelling graphic design dissertation involves immersing yourself in various aspects of the field. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the diverse domains within graphic design is essential for selecting a standout topic.
Identify Your Passion
As previously mentioned, the realm of graphic design encompasses various domains. To compose an exceptional dissertation, it’s crucial to align with your passions and interests. Without genuine enthusiasm for the subject, selecting the best graphic design dissertation topics becomes challenging.
Evaluate the Availability of Information
Once you’ve identified your preferences, it’s essential to determine whether the chosen topic has ample information available. In cases where information is limited, consider if you can independently write with the available resources. Pose such questions to yourself to ensure the suitability of the topic.
Assess the Practical Significance
A chosen topic must hold practical relevance in the real world. If it lacks value and fails to deliver significant insights to the audience, the professor’s approval may be elusive. When making your selection from a pool of graphic design dissertation topics, opt for one that offers tangible value to the reader.
Engage with Your Professor for Topic Selection
Your perceived exceptional topic might hold minimal importance in the eyes of your educator. Prior to finalizing your decision, engage in a conversation with your professors. They can provide valuable suggestions that might alter your perspective.
These guidelines can aid you in choosing a compelling graphic design dissertation topic. Were you navigating through your research following the outlined pointers? If so, excellent! If not, consider adjusting your research approach. While studying, you’ve likely encountered numerous topics. We’ve categorised them according to subject and purpose, offering you a comprehensive collection of graphic design dissertation topics without delay.

Meta-Identity – Graphic Design Master Thesis
![graphic design master thesis topics Profile image of Marcello Jacopo Biffi](https://0.academia-photos.com/43197929/11569155/17231962/s65_marcello_jacopo.biffi.jpg)
2016, Meta-Identity
The prerogative of identity design has always been to manage the visual representation of an object, individual, organisation. Traditionally, a visual identity revolves around a prime signifier, which is said to stand for a specific entity. Its objective is to fulfil the four fundamental functions of visual communication – to identify, to inform, to present and to promote – and to conform the perception of the audience. While all the visual identities share the same objective, they employ different methods to achieve it. The design process, whether the identity is fixed or flexible, is generally focused on the appearance of a predetermined result. On the other hand, the human sense of the word identity can be achieved only by showing change over a period of time balancing between sameness and difference, repetition and variation. Consequently, an identity shouldn’t be defined merely statically or dynamically, but also behaviourally. Thus a meta-approach, whose outputs aren’t determined in advance but are generated through a dialectic process, might be a viable option. The term ‘meta-identity’ has been coined to describe the typology of visual identity which ranges between parametric values theorised in the research. In particular, this project addresses the design process of typographic logo solutions and investigates how type design methodology could positively affect it. Video: https://vimeo.com/183538660.

C. Soddu & E. Colabella (Eds.), "GA2014 - Proceedings of XVII Generative Art Conference"
Francesco E. Guida
In the communication design field, main applications of a generative approach are for information graphics and flexible visual identities. Looking to recent practices we can observe cases of visual identities – that can be defined as dynamic or post-logo – that present a completely opposite approach compared to the traditional production in the field of corporate image. The use of visual languages that are more fluid and expressive, variable, context related, processual, performative, non-linear, consistent are now preferred to the usual and static repetition of a logo or an imposed series of rules. The classical structure of corporate identity – a subject representation through a series of primary and subsidiary visual elements which has in the manual his book of rules – is reactivated by the use of meta-design tools and processes that can be compared to the transition from closed to open systems. Galanter affirmed that generative art refers to any practice where an artist uses a system, such as a set of natural language rules, a computer program, a machine, or other procedural invention, which is set into motion with some degree of autonomy contributing to or resulting in a completed work of art. This definition emphasizes the artist proactive role in the definition of rules or guidelines that allow the production of multiple solutions consistently to the framework. This is the same in the generative design practices, that look to be something more than just a generation Y passion. In generative design practices, the user of computer and ready-made digital tools (professional softwares) becomes the programmer of personalized digital toolboxes – often developed by using Processing, VVVV or java-script codes –. This approach deeply changes the design process and the perspective of practitioners, introducing the idea of a new craftsmanship. Technical issues remain in the background, abstraction and data parameters come into the foreground. This new scenario in the creative and design process empowers the designer, freeing he from the constraints of predefined computational tools, and promoting creative freedom in the construction of visual metaphors. The aim of this paper is to argue this recent evolution in the field of visual identities and in the wider area of communication design practice. by showing a series of case histories as well as presenting the results of some experimental projects.
Visual Communication

Visual identities can be constructed from a number of elements which together can be described as the Visual Identity System (VIS). Typography is one of the VIS’s central elements. Typically, the VIS elements have been considered as static and associated with prescribable visual mandates; however, the hypermodernity paradigm boosted the notion of mobility in everything – and brands are no exception. Brand logos now change in shape, colour, wear different textures and sit on top of a variety of backgrounds. All this incredible flexibility has implications for their typographical elements too. In the empirical part of this research, 50 dynamic logos were selected, grouped according to Van Nes’ categories in Dynamic Identities: How to Create a Living Brand (2012) and the changes in their typographic components were analysed under the Multilingual Typeface Anatomy Terminology framework (Amado, 2012), firstly by the researchers, and then by a group of independent coders. It was verified ...

The competition in the 21 st century is among brands. The two conventional tools for brand management today are brand identity, specifying the facets of brands' uniqueness and value, and brand positioning – a short claim that contains a set of a few differentiating properties, communicated to a target audience. Brand identity, when used as a source for brand positioning, helps the brand change its communication style by different positioning strategies, yet remain coherent, consistent and true to itself over time. This paper identifies and explains the types of elements of a visual brand identity program such as logo(s), typography, colour, symbols, imagery, composition, etc., used to tangibly express characteristics and intangible added values of identity such as personality traits, character qualities and sensations. The result of the analysis is a framework for planning the design of visual identity programs in order to encode and convey particular meanings and to strengthen brands' perceptions and images.

The background of a higher education institution has study programs which are shaded by a faculty. Visual Communication Design study program abbreviated as DKV is one of the study programs under the auspices of the Faculty of Creative Industry Design abbreviated as FDIK. Like a higher education institution in general, Esa Unggul University already has a visual identity in the form of logos, stationaries, company profiles, merchandise, uniforms and wayfinding signage which is expected that study programs also have an identity that reflects the value of the vision and mission of the study program in harmony with university. Through this visual identity design, it is hoped that DKV Esa Unggul University study program will be better known and provide a new nuance and good impact in accordance with the vision and mission of the DKV Esa Unggul University study program. The role of graphic designers in the process of designing the visual identity of the University of Esa Unggul in particular in the design of logos and the application or implementation of the promotional media itself is to provide a strong and effective communication concept. What Is a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design?
A master’s in graphic design is a graduate-level degree that prepares students for various arts, digital media and design-related careers. Graphic design master’s programs focus on advanced graphic design theory, concepts, tools and practices. Classes explore typography, design criticism, and graphic design and art history.
A typical master’s degree takes full-time students two years to complete. It usually takes longer to graduate if you study part time.
Graphic design programs may offer a master of fine arts (MFA) or master of arts (MA) degree. Both degree types usually require core and elective coursework, seminars, a portfolio and studio work. An MFA may take longer to complete than an MA and typically prepares graduates for professional fine arts practice. An MA might be a better choice if you plan to do something other than become a professional artist.
Degree requirements often include a capstone or practicum experience or an internship, either of which provides hands-on experience in a professional graphic design setting. If you choose an online master’s in graphic design, you may need to complete internship or practicum requirements in person. Some programs also require a master’s thesis.
Admission Requirements for a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design
Admission criteria for master’s programs in graphic design vary by school but always include a bachelor’s degree. Depending on the program, you may not need an undergraduate graphic design degree to pursue a master’s in the subject, but you must demonstrate a strong graphic design background.
Potential admission requirements for a master’s in graphic design program include:
- Official transcripts that prove you hold a bachelor’s degree
- Letters of recommendation (sometimes optional)
- A personal statement or statement of purpose
- A graphic design portfolio

- History of graphic design. Students learn about the history of graphic design, including key figures and events that shaped the field today.
- Graphic design thesis. Depending on the program, students may take one or more classes to work on their graphic design thesis. This project is the culmination of everything learned during the program and usually includes both written and design components.
Accreditation for a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design
Some of the best degrees in graphic design are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), which evaluates educational quality for undergraduate and graduate programs in arts and design-related disciplines.
Though not an industry requirement, attending an NASAD-accredited graphic design program may help you stand out from others in the field. You can look up programs in NASAD’s database of accredited institutions to see if your prospective degree is programmatically accredited.

Thinking through Graphic Design History
Challenging the canon
By Aggie Toppins
Graphic design has a paradoxical relationship to history. While it claims to promote originality and innovation—ideas that emphasize the new and unique—design practice is often deeply embedded in previous ideals. Too often, design students encounter the past in brief visual impressions which seduce them to imitate form rather than engage with historical contexts. Even though it claims objectivity and comprehensiveness, graphic design history focuses largely on Eurocentric achievements and abstract notions of “good taste.”
![graphic design master thesis topics](https://source.wustl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/AggieToppins_headshot_ingallery-300x300.jpg)
Yet the past swells with untapped potential. Graphic design history can serve the field of today and tomorrow, but its narratives require updates. History, like design, is always changing—and like design, history is driven by the needs of the present. “Thinking through Graphic Design History” offers ways to engage history, even while transforming it, to inform ethical and intelligent practices. Through this critical guide, Aggie Toppins draws on feminist, decolonial, materialist and postmodern theories to articulate the links between historiography and historical reference-all in accessible language for a college reader. With thoughtful analyses, stimulating creative prompts, interviews with designers from all over the world, and diverse, inspiring case studies that include authorial projects as well as material interventions and community-based projects, this book challenges our traditional understanding of graphic design history.
About the author
Aggie Toppins is associate professor and chair of design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. She writes and practices design at the intersection of critical histories, social justice and studio-based making.
