PhD in Population Health Sciences

The PhD in population health sciences is a multidisciplinary research degree that will prepare you for a career focused on challenges and solutions that affect the lives of millions around the globe. Collaborating with colleagues from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and conducting field and/or laboratory research projects of your own design, you will gain the deep expertise and powerful analytical and quantitative tools needed to tackle a wide range of complex, large-scale public health problems.

Focusing on one of five complementary fields of study at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and drawing on courses, resources, and faculty from the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, you will become well-versed in a wide variety of disciplines while gaining specialized knowledge in your chosen area of study.

As a population health sciences graduate, you will be prepared for a career in research, academics, or practice, tackling complex diseases and health problems that affect entire populations. Those interested in pursuing research may go on to work at a government agency or international organization, or in the private sector at a consulting, biotech, or pharmaceutical firm. Others may choose to pursue practice or on-the-ground interventions. Those interested in academics may become a faculty member in a college, university, medical school, research institute, or school of public health.

The PhD in population health sciences is a four-year program based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the world-renowned Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts. The degree will prepare you to apply diverse approaches to solving difficult public health research issues in your choice of one of five primary fields of study:

  • Environmental health
  • Epidemiology
  • Social and behavioral sciences
  • Global health and population

In your first semester, you and your faculty adviser will design a degree plan to guide you through the program’s interdisciplinary requirements and core courses, as well as those in your chosen field of study. After successfully completing the preliminary qualifying examination, usually at the end of your second year, you will finalize your general research topics and identify a dissertation adviser who will mentor you through the dissertation process and help you nominate a dissertation advisory committee.

All population health sciences students are trained in pedagogy and teaching and are required to work as a teaching fellow and/or research assistant to ensure they gain meaningful teaching and research experience before graduation. Students also attend a special weekly evening seminar that features prominent lecturers, grant-writing modules, feedback dinners, and training opportunities.

All students, including international students, who maintain satisfactory progress (B+ or above) receive a multiyear funding package, which includes tuition, fees , and a competitive stipend.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Anyone with a distinguished undergraduate record and a demonstrated enthusiasm for the rigorous pursuit of scientific public health knowledge is encouraged to apply. Although a previous graduate degree is not required, applicants should have successfully completed coursework in introductory statistics or quantitative methods. Preference will be given to applicants who have either some relevant work experience or graduate-level work in their desired primary field of study.

Like all PhD (doctor of philosophy) programs at the School, the PhD in population health sciences is offered under the aegis of the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Harvard Griffin GSAS). Public health refers to all organised measures to promote and improve health, protect the health of populations, prevent disease, reduce inequalities and tackle the root causes of ill-health in global and local contexts.

UWE Bristol's MSc Public Health is structured around an interdisciplinary curriculum, drawing upon the social, human and life sciences to develop students' intellectual and investigative skills. Through studying a wide range of intersecting disciplines, you'll meet the professional competences for employment in the field of public health.

This course prepares graduates for employment in public health at all levels, spanning health protection, disease surveillance, epidemiology, health promotion, community development and public health leadership.

The course content is applicable to people from any disciplinary or professional background. These include health and social care, local government, education, planning and regeneration, international development, human rights and social justice, and health-related voluntary and community sector contexts.

Professional Focus

The MSc Public Health is an internationally recognised and professionally-orientated award that is validated and accredited by the  Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation  (APHEA).

The course delivers the full range of skills, knowledge and professional competences recognised by the UK Faculty of Public Health and ASPHER (the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region).

We've developed long, established relationships with public health providers across South West England. These include Health Education England and the UK Health Security Agency, who contribute to teaching and provide sponsorship and placement opportunities for students.

Fit for Purpose

The MSc Public Health is a stimulating, challenging and renowned contemporary public health course. Our primary goal is to produce leaders, critical thinkers, problem solvers and analysts, who'll contribute to the ever-changing world of global public health and build a fulfilling and rewarding career.

Our teaching team comprises experienced academics with extensive professional experience and strong research and publications portfolios. The MSc Public Health is also closely aligned with the University's Research Centre for Public Health and Wellbeing . We're based within the School of Health and Social Wellbeing, which is part of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences.

Applicants can choose to study towards a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or the full MSc Public Health (180 credits). All the individual taught modules are also available as stand-alone Continuous Professional Development (CPD) units.

Modules (all compulsory for the full MSc Public Health):

  • Dissertation (45 credits) - a summative research project, based on primary or secondary research that involves submission of a research protocol and a final research report.
  • Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases (15 credits) - explores the full range of non-communicable diseases, issues, determinants and contexts, and how these are addressed within the public health realm.
  • Health Promotion (15 credits) - develops knowledge, understanding and practical skills in health promotion, a core component of public health practice.
  • Health Protection (15 credits) - examines the range of communicable diseases and investigates communicable disease control, surveillance and outbreak management. The module is part-taught by professionals from Public Health England.
  • Introduction to Global Public Health (15 credits) - introduces multidisciplinary public health, based on a socio-ecological model of health, and prepares you for the programme as a whole.
  • Leadership for Public Health (15 credits) - introduces skills in public health leadership and management, and is strongly practice-orientated.
  • Public Health Policy, Politics and Economics (15 credits) - equips students with ideas from political science and policy studies to enable them to examine the origins, context and impacts of major public health issues.
  • Qualitative Health Research (15 credits) - focuses on qualitative research methods and how to apply these in public health contexts
  • Quantitative Health Research (15 credits) - focuses on quantitative research methods and how to apply these in public health contexts.
  • Research and Project Management Skills (15 credits) - explores the key stages of developing a theoretical framework, developing a research question, crafting the research design, navigating research ethics and governance issues, and disseminating research or evaluation outputs.

Please also note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching includes lectures, seminars, group discussions, action learning sets, case studies and self-directed learning.

Part-time students normally attend one day a week and can take up to 90 credits in one year, completing the course within two years.

Full-time students normally attend up to three days a week during two teaching semesters and must complete 180 credits including the Dissertation over one year.

All modules are assessed by a summative assessment, which can include coursework (essay or project), examination or presentation, which are sometimes supplemented with formative assessments.

Professional accreditation

A professionally orientated award, this course has been accredited and the curriculum validated by the Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation (APHEA).

The programme team organises placement opportunities on a one-to-one basis in response to requests from students. These are not compulsory since many UK-based students are already working in public health contexts.

The library on the Frenchay Campus is one of the best healthcare libraries in England, with a huge selection of books, journals and audio-visual materials, including access to specialist health and social case software packages.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to have a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject area as well as appropriate experience. Applicants without a degree level qualification will be considered individually.

If you do not meet the above grade requirements but have at least 12 months relevant professional experience and/ or equivalent qualifications, we will consider you on an individual basis.

GCSE Grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalents are required.

Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.

International Students

International students are especially welcome on this course which reflects both UK and international public health perspectives. Dissertation study can be supported in home countries which can reduce student costs substantially.

International students who do not meet the academic or English language requirements to study this course can qualify by completing preparatory study at our International College .

Selection Process

We are looking for applicants who are committed to the improvement and advancement of public health and are interested in interdisciplinary approaches to working in this field.

As part of your application we ask for a personal statement (approximately 600/700 words) with detailed responses to the following questions:

  • Why have you decided to study for the MSc Public Health at this point?
  • How do your interests align with the UWE Bristol Public Health programme? In your response please consider our focus on multi-disciplinary approaches and on understanding the social determinants of health, and your own particular research interests, where relevant.
  • What skills and qualities could you bring to the MSc Public Health programme and its community of staff and students?
  • What are your career aspirations? How will this MSc Public Health help you realise these?

The personal statement forms part of your application, and will be used in the decision making for whether to offer you a place on the course. Failing to provide and/or failing to address the specific questions posed will lead to delays in your application being considered.

Deferred entry

We are not able to offer deferrals for this programme. However, we appreciate there may be extenuating circumstances to consider and therefore we will consider requests on a case by case basis.

English Language Requirement

International and EU applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 6.0 in each component (or approved equivalent*).

*The university accepts a large number of UK and International Qualifications in place of IELTS. You can find details of acceptable tests and the required grades you will need in our English Language requirements .

English language support

If you meet the academic requirements but require additional support to take your language skills to the required level, you may be able to attend one of our pre-sessional English courses. Students who successfully complete the pre-sessional course can progress onto their chosen degree course without retaking an IELTS or equivalent.

I am a Columbia University graduate student pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. I have an extensive background in data analysis, statistical programming, and public health research. My goal is to understand social determinants of health among those in the LGBTQ+ community and immigrant communities, and I hope to identify effective interventions to improve health.

I currently work with Dr. Dustin Duncan in analyzing data form the Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks and Neighborhoods in Trans women of color (TURNNT) Cohort. Specifically, I am looking into determinants of HIV prevention and treatment and identifying factors that affect them.

I am a first year doctoral student, first year fellow on the Global HIV Implementation Science Research Training Fellowship with ICAP, and an infectious disease epidemiologist. I received a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2014, an MPH in Epidemiological Methods and Applications from the University of Michigan in 2016, and prior to coming to Columbia, spent about seven years at the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the HIV Epidemiology Section. My research interests are centered around infectious disease prevention and treatment interventions, and I have past work pertaining to HIV care navigation, hepatitis C treatment, mpox vaccination, and COVID-19 coinfection among people with HIV. Apart from my role as an analyst, as a database administrator and developer, I designed, carried out, and evaluated a surveillance system modernization project to increase the accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility of HIV test results for department case investigators and outreach staff. My current projects relate to PrEP demand creation among women in South Africa and HIV care retention patterns in Côte d'Ivoire.

Hoisum Nguyen

Inspired by the stories of immigrants and social justice movements in the United States, Hoisum's research centralizes psychiatric and mental health outcomes with a particular focus on trauma and violence as it relates to firearms, racial/ethnic populations, LGBQIA+ communities, and financial means. Equipped with a Master’s in Public Health (MPH, Class of 2020) from Boston University in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, prior training in causal theories from UCLA (2021-2023), and previous work in suicide outcomes and emergency preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic for the county of Santa Clara, CA (2020-2022), Hoisum aims to create research of consequence for policy formulation.

Hoisum is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Epidemiology, a pre-doctoral fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Fellow (PET-T32), and also a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Research Scholar (HPRS) receiving health policy and leadership training from Johns Hopkins University (Class of 2026).

Adam Whalen

I am a first-year pre-doctoral candidate in Epidemiology and a pre-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Training in Environmental Health and Data Science Training Program, jointly managed through the Department of Epidemiology and the Environmental Health Sciences Department. I received my BS in Biology and Public Health Science in 2015 from Santa Clara University, and my MPH in Epidemiology with a Certificate in Applied Biostatistics and Public Health Data Science from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2021. Previously, I worked as a data analyst at the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, working on research projects related to Hispanic/Latino health as well as women living with HIV. As a member of the Spatial Epidemiology Lab at Columbia, my current research investigates how discrimination against transgender women of color and sexual minority men affects health outcomes. I also examine activity space exposure to different features of the bult and social environment and how they influence criminal legal system involvement, sleep, access to gender-affirming health care, and other outcomes. My research interests include social and spatial epidemiology, novel spatiotemporal methods including GPS-based activity space analysis and geofencing applications, injury and violence outcomes such as transportation and police violence, and sexual and gender minority health.

Erin M. Annunziato

I am a pre-doctoral fellow in the Substance Abuse Epidemiology T32 Training Program. I am interested in structural-level determinants contributing to substance use-related harms, including racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment and drug-related legal outcomes. My current research examines relationships between 1) state policies, such as drug monitoring programs, and legal outcomes, and 2) racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment access through the criminal legal system. I have a BS in Biology from Boston College and an MPH in Epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health.

As a doctoral student, my research efforts are focused on evaluating neurodevelopmental outcomes amidst the complex landscape of mental health and substance use among adolescents and their caregivers in diverse conflict-affected settings. My research interests include global mental health, substance use epidemiology, child development, and disability advocacy.

Nicole Itzkowitz

I am a 2nd year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology and a pre-doctoral fellow in the Advanced Training in Environmental Health and Data Science T32 Training Program. I entered the program in 2022 with an MSc in epidemiology from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a BA in public health from the University of Rochester. My research interests are broadly concerned with quantifying urban environmental and built environment exposures and exploring their relationship with injury and other non-communicable disease outcomes. My previous work at Imperial College focused on examining the causal relationship between acute noise pollution exposure and cardiovascular disease hospitalizations and creating a composite metric to estimate smoking behavior at small spatial resolutions. I am currently working with Dr. Andrew Rundle and the Built Environment and Health research group on several projects related to pedestrian and micromobility injuries and fatalities in the context of the built environment and alcohol use.

UB RISE Shines a Spotlight on Public Health

This year, in conjunction with National Public Health Week, University of Bridgeport’s annual day of Research, Innovation, Scholarship, and Entrepreneurship (UB RISE) illuminated the problems facing — and potential solutions for — global public health. At the event, more than 350 university students, faculty, and concurrent enrollment students shared their intellectual and entrepreneurial pursuits and scholarly activities, displaying over 130 posters throughout UB’s Mandeville Hall. Speakers and roundtables informed and entertained throughout the day, explicitly chosen during National Public Health Week to discuss current public health challenges and address how we can improve our country’s health.

“We kicked off public health week with a panel and had speakers all week long,” said the master’s in Public Health program director Meredith Gaffney. “We concluded the week with UB RISE. Then, in May, 67 students graduated from the MPH degree program.”

Gaffney herself presented on the recent $1.5 million grant that the program recently received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will help UB empower the next generation of public health professionals . “The need for public health professionals after the pandemic is serious because approximately 50% of the public health workforce have said they will be retiring within the next five years,” said Gaffney. “At UB, we have three strategic initiatives: to provide financial support, to focus on recruiting and diversify the workforce, and to sponsor workshops where we read, listen, and act.”

Physician Assistant student Marisa Erazo’s poster, “Effects of Delayed Cancer Screening Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic,” detailed her review of the data about those effects. “What I saw when I was doing background research was that there was a huge delay in cancer screening during the pandemic for a variety of reasons,” she said. “At the time, delaying was considered okay, but now years out we are seeing the effects.”

The review showed that people with all cancer types, of all ages, and of all genders experienced a decline in screenings with projected effects of an increase in cancer-related fatalities. It was not all bad news, though. “Some of the papers did include some solutions — like telemedicine and at-home screenings that will help to make up this deficit,” she said. The paper was not only presented at UB RISE, but Erazo also presented it to other Connecticut PA students two weeks earlier at the Connecticut Academy of Physician Assistants (CONNAPA). “Giving students the opportunity to have more than a paper in the classroom and to get the information out there is really important,” Erazo concluded.

One of the day’s winners, Psychology major Vivien Ruettgers, presented a poster on “Happiness” with a reworking of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, compiling the current research and updating the model into a new framework for defining happiness. “This is our first survey and correlational study testing this model,” she said. “There needs to be more research done, with larger, more randomized groups.” She plans to keep working on the topic as she transitions to graduate school. “This not only touches on individuals’ psychological health,” she continued,“but also involves social wellness.”

The 2024 UB RISE keynote speaker was Americares President & CEO Christine Squires. Americares is a health-focused relief and development organization dedicated to saving lives and improving the health of people affected by poverty or disaster. “Americares is Connecticut-based, but they have a global reach,” said director of the School of Business and UB RISE chair Timothy Raynor in his introduction. “They can teach us to shift our mindsets and think large impact.”

Squires was an English major at the University of Delaware but is now the CEO of the global company, which employs more than 800 staff in eight countries, with 30 ongoing programs and 700 volunteer or medical trips supported. Giving $1 billion in aid annually, they work through local partners to send medical supplies and provide training. They also have teams on the ground to support the medical community in various countries. “We partner with local communities that have local solutions but do it on a global scale,” said Squires. “We work to solve problems such as lack of access and awareness.”

Squires detailed the work Americares is doing in Ukraine, where war is ongoing, and in Puerto Rico, which has suffered several natural disasters over the past decade. She pointed out that public health needs are not just pandemics and disaster relief. “Mental health is also public health,” Squires said. “This is more acute in crisis situations, and it is important that we understand the local cultures and organizations. That local knowledge helps make a local impact.” She shared the story of Glorianne Lopez, a school psychologist in Puerto Rico, who Americares helped by training other staff to assist her. “She can’t serve all 250 students alone,” said Squires.

Americares also provides free clinics locally in Fairfield County, serving the 62,000 residents under 65 who are uninsured. Four Americares clinics offer free health services in Norwalk, Danbury, Bridgeport, and Stamford, helping residents with everything from nutrition advice to grocery store cards, treating the whole person and the whole community.

“This presentation was really important because Christine Squires is talking about global health from a local agency,” says Provost Manyul Im. “Our students need to see that because we also have a global reach, especially among our international students.”

That global reach may begin with one individual or idea, but UB RISE demonstrates how to bring those small changes to the larger world. As public health challenges confront the world over the next few decades, University of Bridgeport graduates will be on the front lines, solving problems for us all.
