Xue Mo , formerly Chen Kaihong, was born in Liangzhou, Gansu province. He is currently a cultural scholar, China’s National First-class Writer, Vice President of the Gansu Writers Association, Humanities Tutor of the Tumor Research Institutes of Fudan University,
He is a Leading Expert at the Research Center on Literature Translation and Intercultural Communication at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
He is the holder of many honorable titles, including “Excellent Expert in Gansu Province,” “Excellent Litterateur both in Virtue and Art in Gansu Province,” “Top Innovative Talents in Gansu Province,” “Leading Talents in Gansu Province,” and “Top Ten Figures for China’s Brand Culture in 2015.”

Xue Mo’s The Curses of Xixia
With its ingenious mixture of folklore, religion, history, and modern issues, The Curses of Xixia is a magical realist novel about such enduring themes as life and death, light and dark, eternity, and impermanence.

Xue Mo’s Mother, Wolf Gray
Mother Wolf Gray is one of the animal stories written by Xue Mo. It was adapted from a storyline about wolves in the novel Desert Hunters.

The saga of the goddess and the five champions is rife with challenges and hardships. They grapple with trials involving love and loss, life and death, fame and fortune, and confront demons and evil forces. Nevertheless, they ultimately find the eternity they sought to secure.
Notably, despite a rich literary history, the Han Chinese, constituting most of the Chinese population, did not previously produce epics like those found in other cultures, such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, the Sumerian epic Gilgamesh, or the Tibetan epic King Gesar.
Consequently, “Suosalang” is celebrated as the inaugural epic of the Han Chinese, touching upon timeless themes like the struggle between good and evil, love and faith, excellence and mediocrity, war and peace, ego and universal love, and much more.

Xue Mo’s One Man’s Western Region
One Man’s Western Region is Xue Mo’s long autobiographical narrative about his hometown in western China. The book recounts past events in Western China typical of the middle and the end of the 20th century, around the self-growth and life struggles of a literary youth in a remote countryside.

Xue Mo , formerly known as Chen Kaihong, was born in Liangzhou , Gansu province . He is currently a cultural scholar, China's National First-class Writer , and Vice President of Gansu Writers Association.
He is the holder of many honorary titles, including "Excellent Expert in Gansu Province", "Excellent Litterateur both in Virtue and Art in Gansu Province", "Top Innovative Talents in Gansu Province", "Leading Talents in Gansu Province", and "Top Ten Figures for China's Brand Culture in 2015" [1] given by Chinese Cultural Brand Association of the Ministry of Culture of China.
His works include a series of full-length novels such as The Wild-fox Ridge , The Crunching of Broad Beans at Dead of Night , The Legend of Heroes From Liangzhou , "The Desert Trilogy"( Desert Rites , Desert Hunters , White Tiger Pass ), and "The Soul Trilogy" ( Curses of Western Xia , The Holy Mastiff of Western Xia , The Holy Monk and Spirit Woman ). He travels far in the fulfillment of his dreams and never stops searching; he wields a pen to memorialize his hometown and writes with passion. Xuemo, the penname of Chen Kaihong, is the author of Desert Rites, Desert Hunters, White Tiger Pass, Wild Fox Ridge, The Curse of Xixia, Songs of Liangzhou, The Sound of Broadbeans Late at Night , and, The Monk and the Spirit Woman , as well as Suosanlang , an epic poem. His works have won major prizes in China, including the Feng Mu Literary Award, the Shanghai Novel and Novella Prize. In 2015 he was named one of China’s Ten Persons of the Year, and has served on the faculty at Fudan University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies. Six of his novels, as well as the epic poem, have been rendered into English by the award-winning team of Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin. Besides English, Xuemo’s works have also appeared in French, German and more than three dozen other languages, reaching a large international readership. Domestically, he has legions of devoted followers and a corpus of more than a hundred published works.
Xuemo was born in a remote, impoverished village threatened by blowing sand and perennial drought. When he was a child, not a single book, other than school textbooks, could be found in his village; hunger was constant, and undernourishment stunted his growth. And yet, he dreamed of becoming a writer. How could a child with nothing make the dream come true? No one in and outside his family could help him, and he had none of what was needed to succeed. He saw not a shred of hope.
One day, his maternal uncle said to his parents,
“ Plant a long pole in your yard and put a light on its tip. Every day at nightfall, turn the light on and silently recite, ‘The enlightened exert themselves constantly/the virtuous endure onerous duties.’ Keep at it and one day someone in your family will gain fame. ”
Xuemo’s parents, born of peasant stock and illiterate, believed what his uncle told them. They cut down a small tree in the riverbend, stripped its leaves, and planted it in their yard. The pole rose into the sky among squat rammed-earth houses, its tip adorned with a light that was turned on each evening. The electricity for the light was a major expense and a burden to a family with practically nothing, but it kept coming on night after night for years. The sky always seems higher in the west than elsewhere; at night it is a deep, black curtain dotted with stars that emit cold glints, distant and unreachable. But not the light in the yard that emitted a ray of hope and sent warmth into a child’s heart.
That light shone all through Xuemo’s childhood, saw him into puberty and adulthood. He saw hope whenever he looked at it.
The light in his heart set off against the light in the night sky to shine a way for this tenacious village boy to grow up.
Under its light, Xuemo exerted himself unceasingly and endured onerous burdens. Day after day, for decades.
It was his companion as he grew up.
In 2000 the publication of Desert Rites brought him instant fame and recognition. Desert Hunters and White Tiger Pass followed, both to critical acclaim, widely considered as representative works of China’s Nativist literary tradition. Collectively titled The Desert Trilogy , they were begun when he was twenty-five and completed at forty-six; he’d given twenty of his best years to China’s peasants through the three volumes.
The publication of three more works, The Curse of Xixia, White Fox Ridge, and The Monk and the Spirit Woman , established him as an important figure in contemporary Chinese literature as well as an essential presence in the literary representation of China’s West. Lei Da, president of the Chinese Fiction Society and a well-respected literary critic, once said, “Xuemo’s appearance was a unique literary phenomenon, for he represented a kind of culture, a zeitgeist, human dignity, and an ideal. It was a miraculous occurrence, for he gained great insights from delving deeply into the mentality and temperament of Chinese peasants. The powerful force exhibited in his works is beyond the ability of many Chinese writers.” Professor Chen Sihe at Fudan University had the following to say, “Xuemo and Zhang Chengzhi are the two most spiritual writers from the west,” and “he carries on the vitality seen in the work of Xiao Hong.” Chen Xiaoming of Peking University lamented that “Xuemo is a severely undervalued writer,” who is “a major figure in contemporary Chinese literature.”
With his pen as a banner, Xuemo trudged out of his village into urban areas, that light shining bright in his heart the whole time.
The light is the totem of his life, always aglow, wherever he may be at whatever time.
Under the light, he has ceaselessly exerted himself, completing True Heart, Beyond Emptiness, Guru’s Secrets, An Outline of Xuemo’s Study of the Mind, A Study Guide for Cultural Transmission , and others. Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, an influential press, established a special division for Xuemo’s works and published a series of his writing on the mind. Meanwhile, Xuemo has himself become a light for many people through his study of the mind. His works light up many people’s lives. Where there are ethnic Chinese, there will be books by Xuemo, and special division on Xuemo can be found in the US, Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Tan Xiyong, a Canadian expert on Buddhism has called Xuemo’s Beyond Emptiness the best writing on Buddhism in the last hundred years and beyond. Xuemo formerly known as Chen Kai hong ,was born in Liangzhou Gan su province. As a famous cultural scholar .He is also china's national first-class writer. Vice-Chairman of Gansu writers Association. Dean of Guangzhou research institute for Shangpa Culture and humanities tutor of tumor research institutes of Fudan university and Shanghai university of traditional Chinese medicine. He has been honoured by winning the Feng Mu literature Prize.
In 2015, He was selected in top ten figures for China's Brand Culture. FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct. 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Award-winning Chinese writer Xue Mo, renowned for his literary works portraying life in Western China, presented his work of over 30 books at the booth of China International Book Trading Corporation (CIBTC) at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2022. The exhibition of the acclaimed Contemporary Chinese author caught the attention of global publishing houses and copyright agencies, with the booth populated with visitors and publishers looking to get their hands on his works.
Xue Mo, whose real name is Chen Kaihong, is best known for his The Desert Trilogy, also is widely considered as representative works of China’s Nativist literary tradition. Selected Stories by Xue Mo, which contains wonderful short stories that capture the essence of the culture, life, and spirit of the region, has been translated into over 20 languages, including English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Swedish, Nepali, Hindi, and Arabic.
The publication of more works, inclduing The Curse of Xixia, White Fox Ridge, The Monk and the Spirit Woman, Suosalang, ect, established him as an important figure in contemporary Chinese literature as well as an essential presence in the literary representation of China’s West.
Titled “Everyone Enters Their Own Desert: Xue Mo and His Light”, the exhibition, which concluded with great success on October 23, debuted his novella Into the Desert and the Hebrew version of Selected Stories by Xue Mo, giving global readers a unique glimpse of the stories that portray the mysterious cultural landscape of Western China.
Translated from Chinese by the American Sinologist Howard Goldblatt and translator Sylvia Li-chun Lin into English, Into the Desert is one of the four stories included in Selected Stories by Xue Mo. Goldblatt said that both reading and translating Xue Mo’s works are not like any other experience, adding that he hoped his translation can let English readers appreciate the beauty of Western China, while Sylvia Li-chun Lin praised highly Xue Mo’s work for his profound depictions of Western Chinese life. The Women The Camels and The Dholes is translated by the British Sinologist Han Bin, who speak highly of Xue Mo’s work.
“Xue Mo’s work introduces to the world the contemporary survival of the northwest countryside, including physical survival, spiritual survival, the survival of nature and culture as well, which all tested the people’s ability to resist, survive, and laugh on experience” said Mexican Translator Lisa Carducci.
Paolo Marcenaro, famous translators from Italy, expected to translate more works of Xue Mo, while Yoann Bernard, the director of Swiss Books Agency, expressed looking forward to read more works of Xue Mo.
Sunandan Roy, director of the Indian publishing house SAMPARK, said that Xue Mo is not merely a famous writer, but also a cultural scholar with deep and profound sights into human nature. He hopes to continue working on translating and publishing other philosophical works by Xue Mo after the publication of The World Is a Reflection of the Mind. Publishers from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden and Japan, such as Colisión Libros, Nordin Agency and Tohan Corporation, also showed a strong interest in publishing Xue Mo’s books.
Produced by Sodalite Productions Limited and narrated by the BBC Radio Four presenter Sarah Lam, the English audiobook of Selected Stories by Xue Mo is available now.
