When you start applying to university, you will come across the term “student finance” a lot. Especially if you’re the first in your family to attend university, this term can be confusing. Since you have to apply for student finance before you start university, the process of applying can seem quite complicated. One of the parts of this process is a student finance cover letter. However, if this term is new to you, you’ll definitely be asking: what exactly is a student finance cover letter?

A student finance cover letter can also be referred to as an evidence cover letter. You can be asked to send the letter as part of your application along with the evidence you are submitting. Your evidence cover letter can be brief but will need to have your Customer Reference Number (CRN), your name as well as your current address. This makes it easier to link the evidence enclosed to your student finance account.

Where is your evidence cover letter on your student finance account?

After you have submitted your evidence, you can be asked to attach the evidence cover letter from your account. In this case, you should submit the letter online or in through the post to Student Finance England.

Uploading the evidence cover letter should be done the same way that you upload your other documents of evidence. You can download the evidence cover letter when logged into your student finance account .

You should only upload a cover letter or any other types of evidence to your account when asked to. If uploaded otherwise it can cause a delay in your application.

To start uploading evidence, you must first sign into your student finance account. You must then select the type of application. This will most likely be the ‘Undergraduate student finance applications’.

This is a separate application to the Disabled Students’ Allowance application which requires a different form and an additional cover letter. You can find out more about this on this gov.uk page here .

After you have selected this, you can view all the current undergraduate applications in your account. Choose your most recent application unless the evidence is for a specific year.

Under the section heading ‘Manage your student finance’, you will find the option to ‘Upload supporting evidence’. This is where your evidence can be uploaded and submitted.

What evidence must be submitted for student finance applications?

There are two types of evidence that must be submitted when you apply for student finance for the first time. These are proof of identity and household income information.

Proof of identity is the first step to checking if you are eligible for student finance. You will normally submit a copy of your valid passport details when you apply.

If you are an international student, you can send your valid non-UK passport. You may also be asked to submit Home Office documents.

If you do not have a valid UK passport, you will need to send your UK birth or adoption certificate. When sending your certificate by post, you will need to include your name and address as well as your customer reference number.

How does household income affect your student finance application?

Your household income details are very important when determining how much maintenance loan you are eligible for. You can find out more about maintenance loans here on Think Student.

What is considered as household income changes based on your individual circumstances such as your age and who you are dependent on.

For most undergraduate students, household income includes your parents’ income and any income from your own savings or investments.

To give details of your household income, your parent must create a separate student finance account to you. You can create an account here .

Once your parent has signed in, they will need to provide the correct information about any personal taxable income and any income you may receive from savings/investments. Your parent will most likely have to send photocopies of their P60 or payslips.

This information will then be reviewed by the HMRC and will take about two weeks.

What evidence is needed to apply for CPR support?

CPR stands for Compelling Personal Reasons. CPR refers to when a student has to suspend their studies or change their course due to a personal situation like bereavement or health issues. If you are eligible for CPR support, you can receive additional funding.

To apply for CPR funding, you must submit both a covering letter and a form of evidence from a professional. You will need to reapply each year for compelling personal reasons in order to gain the additional year of funding.

Your CPR application acceptance is highly dependent on your cover letter. This cover letter will be structured very differently to the evidence cover letter and should not be as brief. The purpose of the cover letter is to explain why your CPR should be taken into consideration and why you should receive funding as a result of it.

When writing your cover letter, you should remember to include the following details:

  • Your personal details – this includes standard information like your full name, date of birth and your CRN as well as your contact details.
  • Key dates – this refers to which year/years you would like to be considered for CPR support and when you suspended your studies and when you plan on resuming your studies.
  • Your CPR – this can be due to health issues, family issues or more but it is important to state your reasons clearly so SFE can assess the complete situation.
  • Changes to your circumstances – if there is progress in your circumstances, you are more likely to be successful when you return to your studies.

Not all jobs need them, but for those that do, here are some guidelines from morgan stanley’s recruiters on how to write one..

Searching the internet for tips on how to write a cover letter will produce a litany of dos and don’ts: Flex your communication skills, but don’t go over three paragraphs; don’t recite a generic list of skills, but do speak to every requirement in the job description; be professional, but also be personal…the list goes on.

Truth be told, not all jobs need cover letters, but for the times when they’re required, it needn’t be so complicated to get them right.   Our recruiters say that applicants can hit the mark as long as they follow a few basic rules,  and refrain from quoting Shakespeare or likening their job search to Fantine’s demise in Les Miserable. (It happens). 

1. Why You Need One

They provide a missing link between the living-you and the formulaic resume or CV. Your cover letter conveys three important things:

  • You understand what the firm is looking for.
  • You’ve got the skills.
  • You’re articulate.

2. What to Include

Write it like a letter—include your address, Dear Sir/Madam (or better still, the name of the person, if you know who the interviewer is), and make sure to end it with a closing (“Yours faithfully,” etc).

  • First Paragraph: An opening statement that sets out why you’re writing the letter. Begin by stating the position you’re applying for and if you became aware of it by going to a recruiting event.
  • Middle Paragraphs: Two or three paragraphs to explain what attracted you to the type of work, why you’re interested in working for the company, and why you think you’d be a good fit.
  • Last paragraph: Thank the employer and say you’re looking forward to receiving a response.

Cover letters  can end up being deal-breakers if  they have mistakes in them, and most mistakes are made when a generic letter is used for every application. You’d be surprised by how many times people forget to switch out the name of one firm for ours. Not only do we know you’re applying elsewhere, but it shows lack of attention to detail.

4. Strike an Authentic Tone

Another reason not to use a generic cover letter: It just doesn’t sound authentic. Writing it from scratch will create  a warmer, more engaging tone—even if it’s just a few paragraphs.

5. No Need to Repeat

Don’t use the cover letter to repeat skills that you’ve already outlined in the resume, which speak specifically to the requirements in the job description. 

6. Make the Most of Your Experiences

Do include  experiences or skills that might not be specifically called for in the job description, but you believe will add to your appeal and help you excel in the role.  Examples could be collaborative, leadership or problem-solving skills from extracurricular activities or previous jobs. Just ensure that they’re truly relevant and compelling, and not a stretch. 

7. Get a Second Opinion

Whatever you end up putting in your cover letter, make sure to check for mistakes. Get someone to proofread your letter for typos, grammatical errors, the wrong firm name, and any Broadway Musical references that might have made their way in.

If you are suspending your studies due to illness or because of Covid related issues, you may wish to apply to Student Finance for ‘compelling personal reasons’ which can be kept on file should you need to suspend again or repeat in the future. This will ensure that an extra year of tuition fee loan is available.

Previous study

Awarded hons degree.

Applies to Student Finance England. Different rules may apply to Student Finance Wales and Student Finance Northern Ireland.

Students can usually only get student finance for their first undergraduate degree even if their first course was self-funded. Some courses are exempt from the rule including: 

  • Veterinary science
  • Architecture
  • Allied health professional courses.

If you are taking one of the above exempt courses as a second degree you will be eligible for a maintenance loan and any relevant supplementary grants but no tuition fee loan.

Students who have previous study but were not awarded a degree

If you have studied previously but were not awarded a degree, the number of years you are eligible for funding may be reduced, this is calculated as follows:

  • Ordinary duration of current course +1 year – years of previous study

For years when you are not eligible for full funding you should still be eligible to receive a maintenance loan and any relevant supplementary grants.

If you haven’t got enough years funding left to cover your course, you will need to fund some of the costs yourself unless you can apply for compelling personal reasons (CPR).

Compelling personal reasons (CPR)

It may be possible to get an extra year of tuition fee support if you need to repeat a year, suspend studies, withdraw and start another course due to compelling personal reasons. CPR can be awarded for various reasons including bereavement or illness (academic reasons alone will not be considered).

To apply for CPR you will need to provide evidence of your circumstances. This could include:

  • Medical evidence from GP
  • Evidence from social services
  • Evidence from support agencies
  • Evidence from university or college.

Any evidence needs to state the nature of the CPR and how it impacted your ability to study and the dates and periods affected.  Evidence should be on letterheaded paper where possible and it should be signed and dated.

Your cover letter

You will also need to write a cover letter to send along with your evidence. This should include your address, Student Finance Customer Reference Number, Student Finance England address, your date of birth, date the letter and sign it manually.

As a suggestion the first paragraph could read:

I am applying for compelling personal reasons for Year _____ in order to secure full funding for this academic year 19/20.

You will need to include in your statement

  • Periods of illness, symptoms, how it affected your study, and what treatments are in place, Hospitals, counselling etc.
  • Bereavement circumstances, evidence may include death certificate
  • And other exceptional circumstances.

Going back to uni or repeating a year

If you're going back to university after studying previously or you're repeating a year, this can affect your student finance.

If you’ve studied before

You’ll normally only get student finance for your first degree or higher education qualification, even if you studied a long time ago or if the course was abroad.

The number of years that you can get a Tuition Fee Loan is normally calculated as:

Length of current course + 1 year - number of years of previous study

Even if you only attended a course for a short time, it will still count as a year of previous study.

Any years of Tuition Fee Loan you have available will be applied to the final years of your course.

If you have 2 years of Tuition Fee Loan left, and you’re starting a new course which lasts 3 years, you’ll only be entitled to the Tuition Fee Loan in years 2 and 3.

Any Maintenance Loan and grants you qualify for should be available to you for the length of your course.

Extra year of tuition fee support

If you were unable to continue to the next year of your course or had to leave your course due to personal reasons, you could get an extra year of tuition fee support.

Common reasons for applying for an extra year include:

  • mental health
  • bereavement
  • a caring responsibility

This list does not include all acceptable reasons. We will review each application on an individual basis. However, applications cannot be based on:

  • financial hardship
  • not liking your course
  • reasons within your control

How to apply

As soon as you’ve applied for student finance you should send evidence of your personal reasons for repeating a year of leaving your course.

It’s vital you send a cover letter that includes your customer reference number (CRN) and explains the situation and how it affected your studies

Examples of evidence you can send to prove these personal reasons include:

  • a letter on headed paper from a professional person, such as a doctor or a social worker, who can confirm the situation
  • a letter on headed paper from someone at your university or college who can confirm your situation and when you left the course
  • photocopies of birth or death certificates

You should send your evidence to:

If you do not have any of the evidence listed, you should send a cover letter explaining your situation in as much detail as possible along with any evidence you feel supports your application.

I am applying for the financial analyst position at the Charleston International Airport. I found out about CIA through my fiancé, who is a TA in the Financial Department. I believe I am a wonderful fit for the culture, work environment, and values espoused by Charleston International Airport. My skills in finance can help this organization improve functionally, thus, allowing for an even greater focus on improving the human condition and educating world-class leaders.

Currently I am earning my BBA in Financial Management at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. My desire is to put my skills and knowledge to use in a professional environment. I am in the Honors program and I am set to graduate with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and will be the recipient of the CSU School of Business Outstanding Graduate in Finance award. While I have been taking classes, I have also been interning with finance department for the Charleston County Aviation Authority. Through my internship I have gained finance experience, including working in accounts payable and receivable, handling CRM Reports, balancing credit card charges, reconciling bank statements, and logging remittance reports. I am very proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. I applied this knowledge in a business plan competition at CSU. My team placed earned first place; I primarily handled the financial statements for that project. While at CSU, I have also started an on-campus muffin delivery business (Sophomore year). I called it "Moufflet" and earned several hundred dollars of net income during the first two months of operation.

Just so you know a little bit more about me, I started my own podcast, which I call "Third Culture Journey." It is geared towards people who grew up overseas (like I did) or who are in a transition phase of life. I travel often during summers and have visited many countries, including: Ukraine, England, Israel, Spain, Canada, Armenia, Iceland, and Senegal. I have been to over twenty countries and hope to continue learning about (and seeing) the world.  I believe travel broadens my worldview and helps me understand people better. 1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for

Focus on quality over quantity. Each job you apply for is unique, even if they all have the same title. Every company has different needs for that role. Who's getting student loan forgiveness after $7.7 billion in relief? Here's a breakdown

Student loan borrowers should keep eyes on their accounts in the coming months as the Biden administration pushes forward with student loan relief initiatives.

Following the Supreme Court's block on Biden's initial forgiveness program in 2023, the administration has continued to implement a series of programs to assist some of the 43.2 million borrowers struggling under America's $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt.

Earlier this year, changes were made to the income-driven repayment Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, giving borrowers who originally took out $12,000 or less a chance to have loans completely wiped after 10 years of paying.

Earlier this month, the administration also announced an additional $7.7 billion in forgiveness for undergraduate loan holders, a precursor to another cut set to take place in July.

Biden admin announces $7.7 billion in student loan debt relief

On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced an additional $7.7 billion in loan debt relief was approved for 160,500 borrowers. This will bring the total amount of debt forgiveness up to $167 billion for 4.75 million student loan borrowers, or 1 in 10 debt holders, according to the Department of Education.

Additionally, the administration is working on expanding and contacting eligible borrowers to get a SAVE plan, which currently has 7.7 million borrowers enrolled, 4.3 million of whom have $0 payments, according to the  Department of Education .

Who qualifies for the new $7.7 billion debt relief?

The student loan relief will cover debts in three categories of borrowers:

  • $5.1 billion: 66,900 borrowers receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), which helps people working in public service or nonprofit, will receive relief.
  • $613 million: 54,300 borrowers who signed up for President Biden’s SAVE Plan and have smaller loans for post-secondary education. Borrowers can receive relief after at least 10 years of payments if they originally borrowed $12,000 or less.
  • $1.9 billion: 39,300 borrowers will receive forgiveness on income-driven repayment (IDR) as a result of fixes meant to address concerns about the misuse of forbearance by loan servicers.

Some student loan payments cut in half come July

Undergraduate loan borrowers will have an additional opportunity to get some relief come July , when changes to the percentage you are expected to pay each month based on income will go into place.

Currently, those on a SAVE Plan pay 10% of their discretionary income monthly. Discretionary income is calculated by finding the difference between adjusted gross income and an income that is 225% of the federal poverty line.

In 2024, the federal poverty line is considered $15,060 a year for a single person, according to the  Department of Health and Human Services . That means that 225% of the federal poverty line for a one-person household is $33,885. To find the discretionary income for a single-person household, then, you would simply subtract that amount from the adjusted gross annual income. The difference between the two is the number you're looking for.

A one-person household with a yearly gross income of $50,000 before taxes would have a discretionary income of $16,115, for example. Ten percent of that would be about $1,611, which when divided by 12 would mean the monthly payment via a SAVE plan would come out to about $134.

Come July, however, that monthly percentage will be reduced to 5%, essentially cutting monthly payments in half for many. Now, in the example above, the borrower would owe around $67 a month.

These changes apply to borrowers with undergraduate student loan debt who are enrolled in a SAVE plan. People with both undergraduate and graduate school loans will have payments of 5% to 10% calculated based on the original loan balances. Those with only graduate loans will still have payments of 10% of their discretionary income. 

How to know if you're eligible for forgiveness or relief

The Biden administration has said people eligible for a piece of the $7.7 billion in relief will receive notice via email. Actual balance and account changes will then take a few weeks to appear.

Those wondering if they will see a change in their bill in July can sign into their SAVE Plan account to check their status and eligibility.

How to sign up for SAVE

Enrollment in a SAVE Plan can be done online via studentaid.gov/idr.

SAVE plans are income-driven repayment (IDR) plans that have monthly payments determined by a borrower's income and family size. These plans are often more affordable than default options which do not inherently take your income and ability to pay into account.

SAVE plans have additional benefits such as eliminating 100% of the remaining monthly interest for both subsidized and unsubsidized loans after you make a full scheduled payment, stopping your outstanding balances from growing due to accruing interest rates.

SAVE also gives borrowers the option to exclude spousal income for those who are married but file taxes separately. This way, monthly payments can be determined solely on your personal outcome and spouses do not need to cosign IDR applications.

Who is eligible for SAVE?

Multiple parameters determine eligibility for a SAVE Plan, most of which are outlined on the studentaid.gov website.

Generally speaking, however, the SAVE Plan is available to federal student borrowers with direct student loans. It is not available for private loans or Parent PLUS loans unless the Parent PLUS loans are already consolidated. Applicants must also be in good standing with servicers.

Federal loans that are generally eligible for a SAVE Plan include:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Direct PLUS Loans made to graduate or professional students
  • Direct Consolidation Loans that did not repay any PLUS loans made to parents
  • Consolidates loans from the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Programs, including Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Loans, FFEL Plus Loans and FFEL Consolidation Loans.
