Stage 1: Present examples

Write these sentences on the board with the words underlined as shown. Ask. “What do you notice about the underlined words in the sentences?”

Stage 2: Take feedback

Ask learners to share their feedback on what they noticed in the examples. Some key points you might want to share with them include:

• With ‘said’ we don’t need to say who is being spoken to, but with tell we do. (Sentences a & b)
• If you want to say who is being spoken to with ‘said’ you need ‘to’ (Sentence c) 
• We usually use ‘said’ not ‘told’ to introduce direct speech .

Write up some sentences with a choice between ‘say’ and ‘tell’ and say: Choose the correct word to complete each sentence.

b. Matching

Write up some half sentences on the board and say: “Match the correct ending to the correct sentence start.”

c. An interview

Choose a learner to come and sit at the front of the class. Say: Ask <learner’s name> some questions about their hobby. The other learners interview the learner sitting at the front for a few minutes.

Put the learners in groups and say: “Now try and remember what <learner’s name> said and write up a short report about the interview.”

In large classes, you can do this in groups rather than as a whole class activity.

Eavesdropping

This is an activity for students to practise reporting speech. It provides a situation for reporting what others have said that can be more realistic than some of the exercises that are found in textbooks, and great fun!

My students particular enjoy the fact that in this activity they are encouraged to listen in to each other’s conversations: the concept of ‘eavesdropping’.

You will need to decide on a context that will be of interest to your class. One idea that works well with my students is that of 'first dates', with conversations taking place between two people in a cafe. Preparation

You may have to explain the concept of eavesdropping (listening to someone else's conversation). With lower levels it may be easier to explain spying.

Before starting the activity, I do a short revision session on reported speech, eliciting from students what happens to speech when it is reported and some of the constructions we can use to do so. I write on the board sentence starters such as:

- First he said… - And she replied.. - So he then said... - Only for her to say that... - He then went on to ask her ...

I also remind students that reported speech is rarely a word per word account, but often more of a summary of what was said.

• I then start by introducing the context of the a 'first date' in a cafe, brainstorming ideas about who the people might be and what they might talk about in this situation.
• Next I put students in pairs, of 'first date couples', asking them first to decide on their new names and characters (real or imaginary), and then giving them around ten minutes to prepare a short conversation, which they should write down. I remind students that their conversations can be serious or, if they prefer, humorous!
• Once students are ready, I set up the classroom as if it is a cafe, with couples sitting face to face. To add interest to the role-play, I ask the students to come up with the name of their cafe and sometimes even allocate a few students to the roles of waiter / waitress.
• I then explain to students that some of the people in the bar will be eavesdropping on others, as obviously the conversations taking place are very interesting! Couples should start talking, and if I, the teacher, tap someone on the shoulder, s/he should get up and go and eavesdrop on another couple’s conversation (of their choice). S/he then goes back to his/her partner and reports what was being said.
• I usually tap students on the shoulder to get enough people eavesdropping, and then place myself discreetly at the back of the classroom to observe the activity.
• This process can continue for up to fifteen minutes, with different students having an opportunity to eavesdrop and report back.
• The class then comes back together, for each couple to report to everyone what another couple said. The couple in question can then explain to what extent this corresponded to their original conversation!
• The activity can also be followed-up by a writing stage, where students report the speech in writing, and then compare it with the original conversation.

This worksheet teaches reported speech . The rules for changing the tense of the verb from direct speech are presented and practised. The worksheet is suitable for both classroom practice and self-study. 

Thank you for this lesson. I recently taught my students reported speech, but very briefly. It's a manner of speech that we actually use quite often, from everyday conversations to business communication. I may teach a full lesson about this topic and use this worksheet as a guideline. Thank you again!

I'd like to thank you for the lesson. It is really useful when you teach reported speech in statements. Tenses do not change in reported speech in my mother tongue, so it's important to see what you report and what changes you make when transform direct speech into reported one, and the presentation appeared practical and helpful. I'd probably add an example with the verb in one of the present tenses in the main sentence in direct speech to see how the verb behaves in the reported statements. That's what I did when we were doing the presentation part. My students especially liked a task about Daniella and Martin. That was something from real life and fun.

French President Emmanuel Macron: "Let us be worthy of those who landed here"

French President Emmanuel Macron closed the international ceremony marking 80 years since D-Day with a speech honoring the soldiers who fought in the largest seaborne invasion in human history and, as other leaders have done throughout the day, drawing parallels to the current geopolitical unrest — most notably the war in Ukraine.

Perhaps the strongest part of Macron's speech was its end, in which he honored Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — who was in attendance — and the Ukrainian people's fight against Russia.

"Faced with the return of war to our continent, faced with the questioning of everything they fought for, faced with those who claim to change borders by force or rewrite history, let us be worthy of those who landed here. Your presence here today, Mr. President of Ukraine, says it all,” Macron said, followed by a brief interruption of the roar of a fighter jet flyover.

Europe has not seen the type of ground conflict that is raging in Ukraine since the end of World War II, and this year’s anniversary comes as Russian forces advance on the battlefield – handing Kyiv a series of tactical defeats and poking holes in the already fragile Western alliance opposed to the Kremlin’s war.

"We know that liberty is a fight for every morning," Macron added. "For everyone in this world that lives hoping for liberty, for equality, for fraternity the sixth of June is a day without end, a never-ending dawn."

World War II veteran dies while traveling to France for D-Day anniversary

Robert Persichitti, a 102-year-old World War II US Navy veteran, died last week while on his way to France to commemorate  the 80th anniversary of D-Day , according to Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans organization.

Persichitti was a “wonderful, pleasant, humble guy,” who was “easy to talk to,” said Honor Flight Rochester President and CEO Richard Stewart, who told CNN he learned of his friend’s death last Friday.

“We miss him,” said Stewart.

While Persichitti passed away bound for Normandy — where the Allied forces’  landing on June 6, 1944 , laid the foundation for the defeat of Nazi Germany — he served in the Pacific as a radioman aboard the USS Eldorado, Stewart said. His tour of duty included Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam, according to Stewart and  the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame , into which Persichitti was inducted in 2020.

Persichitti fell ill last week during a stop in Germany while headed for Normandy, Al DeCarlo, a friend who was traveling with Persichitti, told  CNN affiliate WHAM . Persichitti was airlifted to the hospital and died soon after, DeCarlo said.

“The doctor was with him. He was not alone, he was at peace and he was comfortable,” DeCarlo said. “She put his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, on her phone and he peacefully left us.”

Persichitti had heart problems in the past, “but for 102, I would say he was in superb health,” Stewart told CNN.

Persichitti was born in a coal mining town outside Pittsburgh, Stewart said, describing his friend's “humble, poor beginnings.” After the war, Persichitti worked as a carpentry teacher in Rochester, New York, according to the Veterans Hall of Fame, and in 1972 received a degree from SUNY Buffalo.

Trump posts tribute on 80th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy

Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday posted a tribute to the “immortal heroes who landed at Normandy” to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. 

“Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

France's Macron awards 3 more people the Legion of Honor

French President Emmanuel Macron used the international ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day to award the Legion of Honor, France's highest military or civilian distinction, to three more American veterans: Joseph Miller, Richard Calvin Rung and Arlester Brown.

Earlier in the day, Macron awarded the Legion of Honor to Christian Lamb , a 104-year-old British woman credited with having made the maps for the D-Day landing, and 11 other American veterans.

Testimonials and musical performances are taking place during international ceremony

As the international ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Omaha Beach is underway, testimonials from those who fought in the war are currently being read out.

Along with the testimonials, musical performances are demonstrated in front of attendees.

Austin says "Ukraine matters" in the midst of D-Day ceremonies

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed Russia's war in Ukraine while participating in D-Day ceremonies, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer that "Ukraine matters."

"I have engaged members of Congress on both sides, in both parties. I have seen throughout strong support for Ukraine, and even though it took a while to get the legislation through, I was confident that that the right thing was going to happen."

He continued, "Because anytime you see that type of support on both sides of the aisle for a cause, Congress will find a way to get things done, which is what they did in this case, because it's the right thing to do."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at Thursday's international ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day to a standing ovation and a rousing applause.

Zelensky's presence — and Russian leader Vladimir Putin's absence, despite Soviet Russia's key role in winning the war in Europe — is highly symbolic given how the war in Ukraine is casting a shadow over the day's events.

Several world leaders have already used their speeches to cast parallels between Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the aggression of Nazi Germany that sparked World War II.

Netanyahu aide says Israel agreed to Biden's cease-fire plan for Gaza

An aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had agreed to the framework for President Joe Biden ’ s plan to bring an end to the war in Gaza , though he said it was “not a good deal.”

Biden announced Friday that Israel had proposed a three-part plan that would ultimately lead to a complete cease-fire in the  Gaza Strip , as well as the  release of all hostages  who have been held there for the last eight months. It’s “time for this war to end,” Biden said.

A deal is yet to be finalized, and while Biden initially called it an Israeli proposal, Israel’s official position remains unclear. NBC News has reached out to the Israeli prime minister’s office for clarification.

Appearing on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby reiterated Biden’s message, calling it an “Israeli proposal, one that they arrived at after intense diplomacy with our own national security team, and over at the State Department.”

Netanyahu appeared to undermine the plan, releasing a statement on Saturday that called a permanent cease-fire in Gaza a “nonstarter” until long-standing conditions for ending  the war  are met, reiterating that “Israel’s conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.”

In an interview Britain’s Sunday Times, Ophir Falk, chief foreign policy adviser to Netanyahu, emphasized that Israel was not rejecting the deal, saying that it was “a deal we agreed to — it’s not a good deal, but we dearly want the hostages released, all of them.”

He added that Israel’s conditions “have not changed” — the release of the hostages and the destruction of Hamas.

Biden’s plan recast the end to the war, not with the destruction of Hamas, as Israel seeks, but with a degraded Hamas “no longer capable” of carrying out a large-scale attack on Israel like the one by the militant group on Oct. 7.

“Indefinite war in pursuit of an unidentified notion of total victory will only bog down Israel in Gaza,” Biden said.

Far-right factions within Netanyahu’s Cabinet reacted strongly to the proposal laid out by Biden, exposing the competing domestic pressures Netanyahu faces.

Bezalel Smotrich, finance minister and chairman of the far-right Religious Zionist Party, said on X that he would “not be part of a government that agrees to the proposed outline and ends the war without destroying Hamas.”

Itamar Ben Gvir, national security minister and leader of the far-right Jewish Power Party, called the proposal “a victory for terrorism” that would mean “absolute defeat,” and threatened on X “to dissolve the government” should Netanyahu agree to the proposal.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said the threats from Ben Gvir and Smotrich represented a “neglect of national security, of the hostages and of the residents of the north and the south.” Lapid had earlier pledged support to Netyanahu should he accept the deal in defiance of his far-right coalition partners.

“There is a deal on the table and it needs to be done. I remind Netanyahu that he has a security network from us for the hostage deal if Ben Gvir and Smotrich leave the government,” Lapid said on X .

For his part, “Netanyahu can’t wax enthusiastic about a plan that fails to achieve ‘absolute victory,’” Laura Blumenfeld, a Middle East analyst at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in Washington, said. “That’s OK, as long as he avoids one word: ‘no.’”

Meanwhile, international pressure continued to build behind the U.S. as Spain, France, Germany and Belgium each backed the deal. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made calls to Arab leaders on Saturday affirming their commitment to a cease-fire. Qatar, Egypt and the U.S. released a joint statement backing the peace plan.

A spokesperson for Hamas released a statement shortly after the announcement, saying the group “views positively what was included in U.S. President Joe Biden’s speech.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Cairo confirmed to NBC News Sunday that there is a U.S delegation in Egypt, but did not elaborate.

The plan’s first phase includes six weeks of a complete cease-fire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas, and the release of women and children being held hostage. The second phase would see the release of all living hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, before a major reconstruction in Gaza and the return of the remains of deceased hostages to their families in the final phase.

“Biden is calling time on the war,” said Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at the U.K. international affairs think tank Chatham House.

“It’s very obvious that Israel on its own can’t achieve its objectives of total victory and eradicating Hamas,” she said, and Biden’s speech was about pressuring Israel to shift tactics and “find an off ramp to this war.”

On Saturday night, tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv to urge the government to accept a cease-fire.

Ratcheting up the pressure, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, the Israeli organization that advocates for the release of hostages taken during the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, said it will demonstrate in front of the prime minister’s office in Jerusalem on Sunday night as Israel’s war Cabinet convenes.

The organization has rallied around Biden’s plan, which it is dubbing the “Netanyahu Deal,” and called on “all government ministers and coalition members to publicly support the deal and do everything possible to ensure its immediate implementation.”

“We must not lose this moment,” the forum said in a statement. “Time is running out for the hostages.”

Environmental studies and soil collection for chemical testing underway in Fifth Ward

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Soil testing is now underway in the Fifth Ward of the former Union Pacific Wood Preserving facility.

Soil testing is now underway in the Fifth Ward of the former Union Pacific Wood Preserving facility, an area where the City of Houston said has cancer-causing chemicals in its soil.

ABC13 has followed this story for a long time. Neighbors in the area have said for years that something in the soil was making them sick.

Union Pacific is leading this soil testing, which is being done with the help of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and the city and county.

It's a group effort to thoroughly examine the soil and what kind of chemicals are in there.

Testing on Wednesday morning started at Boyce-Dorian Park in Houston's Fifth Ward.

Officials are set to collect samples near the former wood treatment facility until September.

Union Pacific representatives say they're conducting several environmental studies to go along with their soil testing.

"We're looking for a variety of different chemicals in the soil. Chemicals you would find at wood treating facilities, such as the site from Union Pacific, in addition to chemicals you'd find in urban areas - a variety of chemicals we're looking ground surface," Kevin Peterburs, Union Pacific environmental remediation senior manager, said.

After collecting their samples, Union Pacific representatives say they will send them to the EPA for review.

How soon a report will be made and released by the EPA is unknown. ABC13 sent their media team an inquiry.

The Union Pacific sent ABC13 the following statement:

"Union Pacific, in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the City of Houston, and Harris County, announces the start of soil testing in Houston's Fifth Ward. This comprehensive endeavor, the most extensive testing to date in Fifth Ward, underscores Union Pacific's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of residents through proactive environmental assessment and continuous remediation efforts.

The soil sampling, which follows the completion of a first round of vapor testing, will assess the presence of contaminants, including dioxins, furans, volatile organic compounds, and semi-volatile organic compounds, at the former Houston Wood Preserving Works (HWPW) site and surrounding neighborhood.

Identifying and evaluating soil samples for potential contamination is crucial for understanding and mitigating environmental risks to the community. The testing will provide valuable insights into the extent of contamination, both associated and unrelated to past activities at the HWPW site. All data gathered from the soil testing and previous vapor testing will inform the compilation of a health risk assessment for residents in the area.

Working under the direct oversight of the EPA, crews will use hand augers, shovels, and spoons to collect soil samples from depths ranging from ground level to 12 inches below the surface. Sampling will occur on the HWPW site and across five designated zones determined by the EPA, encompassing residential properties, schools, parks and recreation centers.

The selection of sampling locations has been a collaborative effort, with strategic coordination between the EPA, TCEQ, and local community stakeholders. Control samples obtained from off-site locations unaffected by past industrial activities will serve as benchmarks for comparison purposes.

Control sampling, the first step in the rigorous testing process, began in February 2024, with neighborhood soil sampling and on-site investigations scheduled to start in May, and continue through the end of summer or early fall. A second round of vapor testing is planned for the summer months to gauge the impact of heat on vapor migration.

Toni Harrison, spokesperson and community liaison for Union Pacific, reiterated the company's unwavering commitment to transparency and community engagement throughout the testing process.

"The safety and well-being of Fifth Ward residents are of utmost importance to Union Pacific," Harrison said. "We are dedicated to thorough testing, transparent communication, and proactive action to address any identified environmental concerns."

This soil testing initiative builds upon Union Pacific's years-long collaboration with regulatory agencies and local stakeholders. The company's comprehensive approach includes groundwater monitoring, vapor intrusion testing, and ongoing containment and remediation efforts to protect public health and the environment.
