This marked the end of the longest director-composer-lyricist trio in Tamil Cinema, which began since A.R. Rahman's debut on Mani Ratnam's Roja (1992).

Vanthiyathevan : I think that I haven't died yet indeed

What’s it about?

A messenger/spy Vanthiyadevudu (Karthi) takes a long journey to deliver the message of Aditya Karikaludu (Vikram) to his sister Kundavi (Trisha), who lives in a faraway land. Before heading to Kundavi’s place, he spies on what’s happening at Pallavattu and his wife Nandini’s (Aishwarya Rai) palace. He meets Nandini who assigns him another job.

When he meets Kundavi, she requests him to head to Sri Lanka and bring her younger brother Arun Mozhi aka Ponniyan Selvan (Jayam Ravi) to Tanjavur. What is the connection between Aditya and Nandini? Who is trying to kill Ponniyan Selvan? What happens when Vanthiyadevudu meets Ponniyan Selvan?

Auteur Mani Ratnam’s latest film ‘PS-1’ is the first part of the two-part film based on Kalki’s ‘Ponniyan Selvan’, an epic Tamil novel. Many Tamil filmmakers and actors have tried to adapt the novel into film but could not do so due to budget and length constraints. Mani Ratnam, too, had planned to make it many years ago. Seeing the success of Rajamouli’s ‘Baahuabali nationwide and the way two parts were received by the audiences, Mani Ratnam gathered courage and drew inspiration from it to turn the story into two films. Thus, the first part aka PS-1 is here.

Since I have not read the Tamil novel, I critique the film as is. It took a lot of time for me to comprehend the characters and the plot. To understand their conspiracies, we need to remember the characters and their names. That is a big task in this film. Added to that, Karthi takes a long journey. In the film’s first half, we see a song or dance routine every time he comes. The songs and tunes are not mellifluous or catchy either.

Even the so-called “Chola Chola” song filmed on Vikram looks odd in the film.

The film has a dense plot. The twists and turns are interesting. But to comprehend them is not an easy job. The first half of the film entirely belongs to Karthi. He also does comedy and flirts with women. Neither his comedic act nor his romantic side is attractive.

What I liked was the visual palette. Mani Ratnam is the master of visuals. The film is a visual treat thanks to the fantastic production design by Thota Tharani. Ravi Varman’s camerawork is splendid as well. The trio has provided a visual delight.

But the film scores less on the gripping narrative and music. When we watch films and web series like “Baahubali” and “Game of Thrones”, we get to see many narrative high moments or whistle-worthy sequences. Despite belonging to the same genre, “PS-1” fails to provide such moments.

Moving at a leisurely pace, the film hardly engages. Plus, except for Karthi, none of the characters have a defined arc. Perhaps, they may get their due in the second part.

Compared to the first half, I liked the handling of the second half. And the final twist related to Aishwarya Rai is intriguing as well.

As far as performances are concerned, all the actors have done justice to their roles. Karthi gets more space than others. But it is Aishwarya Rai who steals the show. She appears in two different roles. She gives a terrific performance. Trisha is wonderful. They create compelling moments whenever they appear on the screen. Jayaram’s character lacks impact in the Telugu version.

Vikram repeats his ‘Raavan’ act. Jayam Ravi in his brief role as Ponniyan Selvan leaves an impression.

The Telugu dubbing is okay. Tanikella Bharani’s dialogue writing is apt.

Bottom-line: ‘PS-1’, Mani Ratnam’s latest spectacle, is a delight to look at but hard to enjoy the proceedings. The film has stunning production design and visuals, but the narrative is dull.

Rating: 2.5/5

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Review: Mani Ratnam’s Dream Project Comes True

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Review: Mani Ratnam’s Dream Project Comes True

‘PS 1 (Ponniyin Selvan 1)’, Mani Ratnam’s dream project, is a period action film which is currently the talk of the town. The film is based on the popular novel of the Tamil state with the same name. The film deals with the Chola Empire as known to us all. ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ has a very huge star cast, was made on a huge budget. Mani Ratnam made the epic story of the Chola Empire into two parts, and the first part, PS 1, is released theatres worldwide in multiple languages. The trailer showcases visual feast and creates interest on the film. Let’s check out how it fares at box-office.

Vandiyadevudu(Karthi) goes on a mission to the entire Chola Kingdom, as instructed by his friend and king, Aditya Karikaaludu(Vikram). On his trip, Vandiyadevudu finds out about the conspiracy running internally to put an end to Arunmozhi Varma(Jayam Ravi) and the rest of the Chola dynasty. How Vandiyadevudu, with the help of others, fights this and saves Arunmozhi Varma is the rest of the narrative of PS 1. The story continues in the sequel.

Mani Ratnam sets up the very beginning of the film with an intense and realistic war episode. The audience are introduced to the world of the Chola empire with the voice over of Chiranjeevi. This narration is really interesting. The entire first half of the film is really a well-scripted drama where Karthi takes the driving seat. Chiyaan Vikram, in a few but impactful sequences, holds the key in the first half. Mani Ratnam chose to take the same path, even for the second half of the film. The second half of PS 1 is mostly similar to the first half, beginning with a war episode, driving into drama, a bit of action here and there, but the only change is that Jayam Ravi runs the show this time. Overall, PS 1 is a beautifully written and filmed, fascinating drama that is unlike any other war action film.

The main drawback of the film is the narration will be a bit boring and audience needs to be very patient as there were no highs in the film. On a final note, ‘PS 1’ is a fascinating drama narrating an epic historical story. Mani Ratnam brought the best of everything on screen for his dream project. The casting and AR Rahman’s background score stand as the main highlights of the film. PS 1 is more about drama and less about action.

Performances

Vikram as Aditya Karikaaludu is a dream role for the actor, and he completely makes use of every bit of opportunity given by his idol, Mani Ratnam. Vikram always thought of playing this kind of role in a historical film, and the audience can feel the excitement and energy he brings on screen in playing Aditya Karikaaludu.

Karthi as Vandiyadevudu plays the role of Aditya Karikaala’s close and trusted friend. Karthi is the sole runner of the film and explores the major portion of the first half on a mission. The special highlight of Karthi’s performance is his looks and actions in the song Raachasa Maavaya.

Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varma, aka Ponniyin Selvan, gets his part in the second half in a few interesting scenes. Well, he is super cool in them and justifies the titular role completely. More from him is expected in the sequel.

Aishwarya Rai and Trisha (as Nandini and Kundavai, respectively) are the two beautiful, powerful, and delightful ladies of the film. Their looks, appearance, body language, and what not, every bit of their screen presence and performance looks elegant and royal. An ultimate face-off between the two actresses in a major sequence in the second half of the film just lit the screen.

Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sobhita Dhulipala are good and decent in their roles. Both the actresses justified their roles. Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, Jayaram, and all the other actors get small but important roles. They are all well suited to their respective roles.

Technicalities

Mani Ratnam is a name well known to Indian film lovers, mostly for his dramas. Action is never his cup of tea, as is known from his filmography. The story of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, as adapted from the original novel, is a perfect pick by Mani Ratnam. Just like his tastes and choices, the story of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is also more of a drama than action. Mani Ratnam perfectly made use of all the beautiful historical characters and the events between them. Thus, ‘PS 1’ comes out as a well-narrated drama. Credit goes to the legendary director here for consuming the entire five volumes of the original story and delivering it to the audience in just two chapters with a clean and clear narration. He should be appreciated for such an amazing and impactful visual wonder he had created Mani Ratnam.

AR Rahman is the true magician of the film. The audience experienced a lot of what the duo of Rahman and Mani Ratnam can do together, from their filmography. The duo repeats the magic here. AR Rahman’s choice of instruments for the background score to bring the original flavours of the history. The Telugu audience has a special gift here from AR Rahman in PS 1. After a long gap, AR Rahman gives his mesmerising vocals in Telugu for the song ‘Ponge Nadhi’. All the technical aspects of the film tick all the right boxes and are exceptional. Special credit goes to the departments of production design, camera, and costumes.

PS1: Terrific Trending There, Dull Here

PS1: Terrific Trending There, Dull Here

Mani Ratnam's epic drama “PS1” is garnering great response in the USA and Tamilnadu. The audiences are showing interest to watch this film and book the tickets in advance.

The early trends suggest that “PS1” is likely to post a nearly $1 million haul from premiere shows. The collections are mostly for the Tamil version. In Tamilnadu, the film’s advance bookings are on par with Vijay and Ajith’s movies.

But the same picture is missing in Telugu states. There is virtually no publicity or hype for this film. Hence, the trend for bookings remained dull. Two days ago the advance counters opened.

The trend remains poor. Except for a couple of multiplexes, all others are showing green.

Ponniyin Selvan Review – Requires Patience

Ponniyin Selvan Review

Requires Patience

OUR RATING 2.5/5

What Is the Film About?

Vallavaraya (Karthi), upon the instruction of Aditha Karikalan (Vikram), starts his journey across the Chola Kingdom to find out about the conspiracy to kill the Chola heir. Who hatches the sinister plan and did Vallavaraya and others save Arunmozhi (Jayam Ravi) is the Ponniyin Selvan’s core plotline.

Performances

Vikram essaying the role of true warrior king Aditha Karikalan is terrific screen presence-wise. However, he has a smaller part in the movie and appears only intermittently. The actor does his role with intensity and ease as he usually does.

Karthi has a real meaty role in the movie. He is the one hogging the limelight from the start to almost the end. What’s more, it is a less serious and fun part that is easy to connect. His is perfect casting as Karthi naturally comes across as Vallavaraya. The body language and demeanour are there, and all he has to do is make the action believable. He does it with ease.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini is another crucial role in Ponniyin Selvan -1. Again, the action she is part of more than the run time drives the narrative at key moments. She does well in those moments. And not to forget, Aishwarya looks ethereal, elegance personification, as the queen.

And finally, Trisha has a weaker part compared to others. Still, she holds her own in whatever little that’s given. More than the presence and performance, which is fine, the lack of meat to the role in driving the proceedings is felt throughout.

Legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam directs Ponniyin Selvan -1. He has cited it as a dream project many times through the years and finally gets to make it. Ponniyin Selvan is based on the book of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy.

First thing first that one needs to understand is that Ponniyin Selvan is rooted in Tamil culture and nativity. The character names, places and dressing everything reflects that. It makes it miss the universal appeal of, say, the Bahubali movies or other such period or historical dramas.

One hopes to be engaged through the story and the politics and little twists and turns, which have a universal appeal. Luckily, the story here is intriguing, and it has enough meat to hold the attention.

However, the problem comes in Ponniyin Selvan -1 courtesy of its narration and writing. While the story intrigues, the scenes lack the impact that one expects. The writing gets the blame here, but also the directorial style of Mani Ratnam. It looks a little out of place for the historical context.

What happens as a result is a missing gripping narrative. One is never invested in the characters or the proceedings. The plot moves from one place to another and from one situation to another, but the sense of involvement is missing.

By the time one reaches the interval mark, it feels like watching an entire movie. It feels so long and tiring once the drama starts. The slow pace and lack of exciting action or drama is the culprit.

After a decent interval revealing a crucial flashback, the second half gets back to the way things were for the most part in the first half. They have content but lack the wow factor or engagement. In the age of Baahubali and Game Of Thrones (a visual spectacle or drama behemoth), when one offers none, the result is easily understood.

It is only towards the final half an hour that some energy is generated. It is more to do with the ending and the potential cliffhanger on cards. It works alright and sets things up for part two.

The real issue with Ponniyin Selvan -1 (in Telugu) is the lack of memorable characters. Despite so many actors and known faces, there is hardly anyone who makes the desired impression.

Overall, Ponniyin Selvan -1 sticks to the story and relies on it to carry through with no highs. A combination of tiring narrative and weak writing further mars its experience. If you have the right expectations, the epic is a decent watch at best; otherwise, its a snoozefest.

Performances by Others Actors Jayam Ravi is the third male lead in the movie playing the heir to the Chola Kingdom. He appears late in the story but is crucial to the rest of the proceedings. He is a bit stiff compared to other actors but is alright in action parts.

Ponniyin Selvan -1 is filled with artists. A notable name plays even a small side role. Sharath Kumar, Parthiban and Rahman stand out among the many supporting castes. They are antagonists and scheming guys. They do their parts adequately. Jayaram is okay. Tanikella Bharani’s dubbing feels a little odd initially for him but sets fine overall. Prakash Raj as an aged king, does his usual like a walk in the park. The rest of the cast is acceptable and does the necessary, even if there is not much to talk about.

Music and Other Departments?

The songs may not have worked in Telugu, but AR Rahman does enough to make up for it with the background score. It has an international appeal and, at the same time, keeps the Chola period in mind. The combination gives a unique appeal.

Technically the movie is superb with excellent cinematography. Ravi Varman’s lens gives a naturalism to the proceedings despite being a period film. The editing, too, is alright, considering the mammoth scale and cast involved. It could have easily turned into a mess. The visual effects are limited but well done. The opening war sequence involving ships is a prime example. The writing lost its impact in translation in Telugu.

PSA: You Need to Check Your Elden Ring Save ASAP

World of warcraft players break the timeline by killing garrosh and baine early, world of warcraft: the war within and dragonflight are slowly undoing one change.

In 1988, the Chiodo brothers released the cult classic comedy horror film Killer Klowns from Outer Space . The movie told the bizarre tale of alien clowns terrorizing a small town by trapping people in cotton candy cocoons, miniaturizing them with demonic shadow puppets, and shooting them with popcorn bazookas. A B-movie favorite, Killer Klowns from Outer Space didn't exactly take off as a franchise like other horror movies of the 80s. No sequel has been released in the decades since, but fans now have a video game based on the movie to play, at least.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game where a team of three Klowns tries to hunt down and harvest seven unlucky humans. Essentially Dead by Daylight with alien clowns, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game was developed by Teravision Games and IllFonic , the latter of which worked on similar games like Friday the 13th: The Game , Predator: Hunting Grounds , and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed . Making an entire game out of an 88-minute-long B-movie is a big ask, and unfortunately, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is unlikely to usurp Dead by Daylight as the premiere asymmetrical multiplayer horror game on the market.

Anyone familiar with Dead by Daylight or any of the other aforementioned games will know exactly how a match of Killer Klowns from Outer Space plays out. The Klowns have to hunt down all the humans, while the humans have to work together to escape. As usual, the Klowns are overpowered compared to the humans, with the idea being that the human survivors will work as a coordinated team to protect each other, outwit the Klowns, and ultimately escape with their lives. Without proper communication, the humans don't really stand a chance against the Klowns, but yet it's still way more fun to play as the humans.

Running around Killer Klowns from Outer Space 's various maps as the humans, hiding from the Klowns and working together with friends to make it out alive, can lead to some thrilling moments. Encountering one of the grotesque, waddling Klowns is terrifying, and running away from them can lead to some memorable chase sequences. Killer Klowns from Outer Space lends itself well to heart-pumping moments where players are doing everything they can to get away from the creatures, whether that's hiding in a dumpster or taking the fight directly to them with a knife.

Humans are free to loot coolers and other objects dotted around the map to find helpful items that can give them an advantage over the Klowns . For example, if they happen to get trapped in a cotton candy cocoon, they can use the knife to cut their way free and have another chance at winning the match. Stocking up on items and using them wisely is key to success as a human in Killer Klowns from Outer Space , and it can be great fun when it clicks.

What's not fun is when players die early in a match as a survivor, as the game is likely to continue on for another 10 minutes. While they're dead, players can complete mini-games to give their fellow survivors various bonuses and helpful items, but these mini-games quickly become more boring than simply sitting and waiting for the match to be over. There's whack-a-mole, Simon Says, and a handful of other games, and though they're amusing at first, they become very tedious before too long.

The Klown Experience vs. The Human Experience

Even so, the survivor experience in Killer Klowns from Outer Space is far superior to playing as a Klown , which is a drag. Klowns are tasked with either killing the humans through brute force or harvesting them using cotton candy cocoons. A lot of the time, playing as a Klown in Killer Klowns from Outer Space means wandering around large maps and hoping to luck upon a player. After finding an unlucky human, Klowns can zap them with a cotton candy gun, bash them with a mallet, lure them using psychic powers, and more, depending on one's class and loadout. Hanging up cotton candy pods and harvesting humans means lugging things around and taking them to machines dotted around the map, which isn't nearly as thrilling as the human survival experience.

As the match goes on, the Klowns unlock new abilities like the power to "jump" to anywhere on the map, for instance. Klowns can also commit Fatality-like finishing moves on humans that they down, and while these are funny at first, they don't go nearly far enough to be even close to as entertaining as the Mortal Kombat Fatalities . There is still fun to be had as Klowns when playing with the right group of friends, but most of the time it is a big letdown whenever the random team selector chooses Klowns instead of humans.

There is the option to do custom matches and the game supports bots, though the bots are absolutely useless in our experience. The Killer Klowns from Outer Space bots tend to walk aimlessly around the map and slow down considerably when trying to walk through doors. Hopefully, the game's player count is healthy enough that players don't have to worry about dealing with bots, but it is something to consider.

The bots aren't the only thing underwhelming about the Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game experience. The game also has some technical problems that need sorted out, like scoreboards not accurately displaying the number of kills for Klowns and cocoons flying out of bounds, leaving the survivor with no hope of being saved. Players will also be disappointed that the majority of objects found in the maps have no form of interaction, which can make the maps, though lovingly recreated from the movie, feel lifeless.

Killler Klowns from Outer Space Nails the Movie's Aesthetic

As is typically the story of asymmetrical multiplayer games, the Killer Klowns from Outer Space experience is a mixed bag. There are times when it's a blast, but there are also times when it's a serious drag. One's enjoyment of the game will also largely depend on how they feel about the 1988 movie. Someone that's a huge fan of the movie will get a kick out of how Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game absolutely nails the movie's style . Getting to visit memorable locations from the movie is a lot of fun, the banter in the game is hilarious, and seeing the wardrobes of characters like Mike Tobacco recreated in video game form never gets old. The iconic theme song is used to great effect as well.

Besides the general aesthetic, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game also does a great job with progression. Players have challenges to complete to unlock new customization options, and leveling up means gaining access to new classes and abilities. The core experience is still not going to appeal to everyone, but for those that do like the game, it at least provides worthwhile reasons to keep playing.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is not going to convert anyone that isn't already a fan of these types of games, and honestly, there are better, more polished versions of this already out there. Hardcore fans of the Killer Klowns movie will get the most out of the game adaptation, and it's hard to recommend it to anyone else, really. The game has its moments, but it's unlikely to keep most players entertained for all that long.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer game based on the cult classic 1988 horror comedy film.

  • Loving homage to the 1988 cult classic movie
  • Playing as a human can be fun
  • Solid progression and customization options
  • Dying early can make the game excruciatingly boring
  • Klowns aren't nearly as fun to be as humans
  • Maps look great, but feel lifeless
  • Fatalities are a letdown

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game will launch on June 4 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Game Rant was provided with a PS5 code for this review.

Official Dragon Ball Staff Reveal Perfect Cell Almost Had a Completely Different Face

Early Akira Toriyama concept art of Dragon Ball's Perfect Cell depicts the "perfect warrior" with a much different look than his current appearance.

The Dragon Ball series is once again revealing rarely-seen artwork regarding the popular anime series by the late Akira Toriyama. This time, staff are sharing early concept artwork of Perfect Cell from the "Cell Saga."

According to the official Dragon Ball website , the below rough sketch of Perfect Cell comes from Toriyama trying to finalize the character’s design. "This is a rare rough sketch of Perfect Cell," the website states. "It appears that his figure as seen from the back was more or less settled at this point, but a few potential iterations of his face can be seen here. The sketch of his shed husk here also looks different from the bug-like final version."

Toei Animation's Official Vegeta Anniversary Calls Back His Original Dragon Ball Z Colors

A noticeable difference between the early variations of Cell’s face in Toriyama’s concept art versus the finalized product is that Perfect Cell, for lack of a better word, is 'uglier' and more menacing-looking. In contrast, the finalized version of Perfect Cell has a cleaner look and a far more smug facial expression. Arguably, the final look of Perfect Cell plays up the 'perfect' motif of the character, while the original designs appeared to stem more from the initial monstrous appearance of the android in his earlier forms.

Dragon Ball's Cell Was Created by Akira Toriyama in Response to Editor Criticism

There is some missing context regarding the re-design of Cell/Perfect Cell. As die-hard Dragon Ball fans know, the "Cell Saga" was originally going to follow Androids 19 and 20/Doctor Gero as they went up against Goku and the Z-Warriors. However, after being mocked by his former editor for making the bad guys a "fatso" and an "old geezer," Toriyama created Androids 17 and 18 to take their place in the story. Toriyama’s former editor once again mocked the new bad guys for being "brats," which led to Toriyama creating Cell -- which was still ridiculed by editors for his ugly, bug-like design. All this criticism by past and present editors eventually led to Toriyama creating Perfect Cell as the good-looking villain he is today .

Official Dragon Ball Super Artist Draws Classic PlayStation Game Illustration

Previously, the Dragon Ball series has revealed early artwork of Kid Goku from the original manga . New artwork of Kid Goku’s return in the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima anime series was also publicly revealed in mid-May. This exciting news for longtime fans comes as Dragon Ball is gearing up for its 40th anniversary with new collaborations with popular brands.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds Of The Mad Overlord PS5 review – ground zero for RPGs

GameCentral reviews the most influential video game you’ve never heard of and the predecessor to everything from Final Fantasy to Fallout .

There was a brief debate, a few months ago, as to whether the term JRPG was derogatory. It was initiated by developers trying to promote Final Fantasy 16, so the argument may have had ulterior motives – with most neutral parties in Japan seeming to have no issue with the word. Although it’s long been a subject of debate as to whether it describes a specific sub-genre of games or whether it simply refers to all role-playing titles made in Japan.

In a sense though it doesn’t really matter, because all modern role-playing games have the same point of origin, in Wizardry: Proving Grounds Of The Mad Overlord. Wizardry was the creation of American students Andrew Greenberg and Robert Woodhead, who began work on the game as far back as 1978, inspired by both Dungeons & Dragons and various prehistoric video games that only existed on computer mainframes of the time.

Its first commerical release was in September 1981 on the Apple II computer and thereafter on various other 8-bit formats of the day, in both the West and Japan. There have been many sequels and spin-offs since then, with most of the recent ones made in Japan, where the franchise’s name is better remembered – even as it is remains mostly forgotten in the West.

It’s impossible to overstate the influence of Wizardry on modern video games, as while there were some other titles around that time with similar features it was by far the most refined – in part because the developers had to wait several months until they had access to a computer that could run it properly, allowing them time to playtest and balance it.

The most obvious way in which Wizardry influenced subsequent games is in its turn-based combat, which has enemies lining up politely, opposite your party (who are represented only as headshots) as you both try and take chunks out of each other. But the whole concept of controlling a group of people at once, kitting them out with new gear and levelling them up, was new at that time, even if it was very obviously borrowed from Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop role-playing games.

In Wizardry you can use pre-made characters or create them yourself, with five different races (humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and hobbits), four class types, and four elite classes. Although unusually each character also has an alignment – of good, neutral, and evil – and you can’t mix and match the two extremes.

What will surprise many, considering its age, is that the game is technically a first person 3D game. The original Apple II version had a tiny square of the screen devoted to an incredibly primitive vector graphic view of the space in front of you. It’s impossible for the graphics to have been any more simplistic and yet games were still copying the same basic set-up a decade or more later, in everything from Atari ST classic Dungeon Master to Shining Force predecessor Shining In The Darkness.

However, the closest modern decedent is our beloved Etrian Odyssey and playing this remake we never quite realised just how similar the two franchises are. (Although the Wizardry remake draws the map for you as you explore, rather than making you do it.)

Along with the top-down Ultima 1, released just a few months earlier, what we think of today as JRPGs were all inspired by Western games, that were in turn heavily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. This creates a very unusual family tree, especially when you consider games as diverse as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dark Souls (Wizardry also has you going back to collect the loot of previously killed party members) on the outer edges.

All of which, finally, brings us to this remake by Digital Eclipse, which has been in PC early access since last year and… is really good. It’s a very literal remake, in that it maintains exactly the same gameplay and controls, as well as map layouts, but with a host of optional quality of life features – in part to streamline the experience and in part to compensate for the rock hard difficultly level and the threat of permadeath.

The graphics are not very impressive, but this is clearly a low budget labour of love, as you still move around the grid-based map in discreet steps. You can even choose to have a representation of the original Apple II graphics in the bottom right-hand corner or superimposed in front of you.

Digital Eclipse have long specialised in retro emulation and historical recreations and they’ve spared no effort here, with map variations based on many of the game’s different versions and not only a mountain of options – the role-playing equivalent of driving aids – but surprisingly detailed explanations of what they all do and why the developer chose to add them.

This helps to deal with some of the game’s more unforgiving elements, such as extremely annoying traps, although the menus and user interface always seem a touch too complicated for the very simple gameplay on offer. This includes the village with its various shops and services (which is, again, just like Etrian Odyssey) that you return to between forays or when all your party dies.

Wizardry is the Citizen Kane of role-playing games and while it’s not aged quite as well as its cinematic counterpart it is still perfectly playable today, thanks to this remake. It’s unfairly difficult, obscure, and repetitive and yet there’s still a tangible joy in creating your characters and carefully mapping out the dungeon. Even the combat is more complicated than you’d expect – as you realise how little has really changed until only very recently.

Etrian Odyssey is still more fun (number four is the best) but Wizardry is far more enjoyable than you’d ever expect a more than 40-year-old video game to be. It may be brutally difficulty and needlessly cruel, but this remake allows you to tame the experience to your own preferences, while still giving a clear view of a game for which the word classic is an understatement.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds Of The Mad Overlord PS5 review summary

In Short: One of the oldest and most influential video games of all-time remains surprisingly entertaining thanks to this loving and option-filled remake.

Pros: The core game is still perfectly playable today and the remake is stuffed with optional quality of life and difficulty settings. Still using the original graphics as an overly is a cute touch.

Cons: For a modern remake the graphics aren’t very good and the price is very high for non-fans, especially as the game is actually quite short. UI is quite daunting.

Score: 7/10

  11. PS1: Terrific Trending There, Dull Here

The early trends suggest that "PS1" is likely to post a nearly $1 million haul from premiere shows. The collections are mostly for the Tamil version.
