The Department of Sociology was established on Hyderabad Campus in 1964 with Prof. Shafi Mohammad Memon as its first chairman. The department was shifted to Allama I.I Kazi campus Jamshoro in 1970. This department has been imparting quality education. Courses have been designed to equip students with professional skills and knowledge relevant to the changing needs of society and many of the graduates of this department are currently holding executive positions in private as well as in government sector. The seminar library is equipped with 3000 books and provides access to latest publications and journals on various topics of Sociology. Research is the basic hallmark of the department. The department has established links with NGOs and the wider community. The Faculty is well-equipped with up to date research tools and techniques. Students are enrolled in M.Phil. Programme and are working hard on their research dissertation under the guidance of qualified faculty. It aims to create in students the “Sociological imagination” which signifies the ability to see their lives, concerns, problems and hopes as entwined within the larger social and historical context in which they live which develop in students the skill critically and creatively to make their vision broader to envisage and encompass the existing social framework and enable them to apply their theoretical knowledge to the solution of the social problems around them. Doctoral Programme in Sociology has established throughout its existence the Department of Sociology at University of Sindh has been a major centre of research and graduate training in Sociology. Its graduates can be found at senior academic levels throughout Pakistan and around the world. Presently Sociology is offering Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral level Programmes. BS-IV year, MA Pass two year, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes.

PhD Courses

The PhD Sociology Program is significantly research-oriented. It comprises of 18-credit hours course work. In addition to course work it will be compulsory for the students to enroll fieldwork, seminar and dissertation after the completion of course work. This program is for three to seven years. The QAU Islamabad rules and regulations will be followed for the admission and examination (as given in the Quaid-i-Azam University Calendar 2012 pages 243-264). The course distribution is as below:

Three years with six semesters (one year course work and two year research) and not exceeding seven years

Admission criteria

• M.Phil Sociology plus departmental admission test and interview (70% for test and 30% Marks) and PhD rules and regulations of the Quaid-i-Azam University.

Requirements of Programme

• 18 credit hours courses will be offered to the PhD students from the above mentioned list core and optional courses. However, no repetition of courses will be allowed. The course code of Dissertation will be SOC-699.
• List of Optional courses of M.Phil Sociology and PhD Sociology is the same. However, those students who will register in a course in M.Phil Sociology will not be allowed to repeat in PhD Sociology. He/ she will study from the remaining list of the optional courses.
