Biotechnology is a rapidly developing field of biology that involves the use of living organisms and systems to produce products. I am intending to pursue an MSc BiotechnologyProgramme at the University of Bedfordshire because it will provide me with open doors to careers in biotechnology and related industries. This course will give me the opportunity to understand molecular and computational biology as well as microbiological techniques for technological development. In this course, I will learn modern technology that will enable me to gain insights into how germs are used in the global biotechnology industry to benefit mankind. This course Molecular biology, computational biology, applied microbiology, analytical biology, and biomaterials will help to further enhance my knowledge and skills. So, I think this course is suitable for my future career.

I have seen the course modules, learning outcomes, and syllabus of MSc Biotechnology Programmeat the University of Bedfordshire and this course will equip me with an understanding of how germs are used on an industrial scale. Additionally, this course will enrich the systematic knowledge and understanding of 3-dimensional protein structure modeling tools, including nucleotide and protein sequence databases and molecular modeling software.The course is designed to enable me to develop the ability to learn independently, explain complex topics clearly and current research, and use accurate and fluent language. I will benefit from this course with a broad knowledge base and key transferable skills that will enable me to take my career to new heights.This course is divided into three semesters. As a full-time student on the course, I will undertake two studies in each semester one and two which include a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical sessions. In the third semester, I will undertake an individual research project supervised by an academic member and will have the opportunity to take responsibility for the implementation of the plan. This course encourages me to pursue a long career. Hopefully, I have been able to clear the purpose of my admission to the university. After completing this course, I would like to go on to establish my career as a Biomanufacturing Specialist and Biotech Product Analyst in a reputed organization in my country. So, I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I completed my Secondary and Intermediate from the science group respectively in 2010 and 2012 from the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Comilla, Bangladesh. I studied Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh in February 2018. After that, I finished my Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University ofChittagong, Bangladesh in 2019. While studying for my Bachelor's and Master's, I was involved in various co-curricular activities to enrich my knowledge and skills such as Debating, Socializing, Take participating in Charity programs. At this point, I realize that I need a higher degree from the UK to further enhance my knowledge. So, I would like to pursue my higher degree in the UK and choose to study MSc Biotechnology Programme at the University of Bedfordshire which would benefit me professionally. I think I should gain more knowledge in the field of biotechnology so I decided to continue my further studies with this course. As of the moment, I am interested in learning all the related skills and knowledge from this course.Since the course modules are arranged in a way that bears a lot of resemblance to my academic education so I look forward to studying the course. It will not be difficult for me. So, I am confident that my professional goal makes me a suitable candidate for the course.

This MSc Biotechnology Programme will provide me with a set of practical skills that are critical and essential in today's business and biotechnology fields. I understand that the University of Bedfordshire is presenting one of the best options for me. Since I want to be in the biotechnology profession, I can gain complete knowledge from the modules of this course. The modules include Analytical Methods, Applied Microbiology, Biomaterials, Biotechnology Research Project, Computational and Systems Biology, and Molecular Biology. All these modules are highly demanded and suitable in today's world of the biotechnology sector.So, I hope my chosen course will make me better and further open doors for my profession.

There are several reasons why I chose the UK to study this course. I like the UK culture because they teach to be realistic. I am committed to studying this course in the UK because they believe that UK education is built on the right professionals and there are high expectations from applicants with such degrees. UK’s academic reputation is globally renowned. However, the study environment in my country follows the theoretical system of education which is quite different and no soft skills are acquired. In addition, the government and private organizational structure and governance of Bangladesh are based on the UK system. In recent years, all companies in Bangladesh are emphasizing hiring Bangladeshi graduates with degrees from abroad, as they see the transferrable skills carried forward from the international education will play a key role in transforming their approach to the business and believe these graduates are capable of doing so. I am determined to do my utmost to build my career and a bright future, which I have always dreamed of. This reason attracted me to pursue a degree in the UK. A recent survey of International Graduation Results in 2019 produced by iGraduate by Universities UK International shows that 82% of international graduates say their UK degree is valuable for financial investment and a similar number of graduates say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. About 83% think a UK degree has helped them get a job. These aspects have driven my ambition to get a degree from a UK institution.

I like the University of Bedfordshire because it incredibly welcomes international students and I am attracted to this course because it offers a different perspective in an area where I want to study. To support students the University have invested heavily in their facilities to shape the physical and intellectual environment of learning. Overall, I feel that these attributes of my master’s program will help to increase my overall effectiveness in the business world and give me a unique advantage in my future career. The university is ranked 801st in the QS World University Rankings by Top Universities. According to DLHE 2018, 91% of graduates are working and/or further studying within six months of graduation. In addition, the university has a good reputation for teaching, research, and business partnerships. Moreover, the university has a well-equipped campus. Actually, the university supports their students with a dedicated team during their course to get career-ready. And it will be a great achievement for me if I get the opportunity to study at the University of Bedfordshire.

Imperial Medicine Personal Statement Example

Medical Science appeals to me because of its mutability. Particularly, the opportunity to continually learn and apply new innovations to help the human body function fascinates me. A teacher opened my eyes to how science is linked with all aspects of our life, prompting me to choose Biology at my A/Level. Human Biology in particular interested me. I realised how the various organ systems need to work in tandem to keep our bodies functioning.   Visiting a Surgical Intensive Care Unit opened my eyes to instances in which congenital disorders destabilised the functioning of the entire body, which I was not able to glean from my textbooks.

Seeing an ETU function highlighted how stressful a medical career can be. Often, a single doctor on shift had to prioritise among patients who had been waiting for hours, and were heckling the doctor. I was impressed by their ability to keep calm and make swift decisions based on a range of symptoms. A highlight of my work experience was being able to see a Caesarean section delivery. I saw how everyone from the nurses to the surgeons contributed towards the procedure. Observing how the team supported the mother, calmly explaining what she could expect, and holding her hand through the pain, opened my eyes to the level of empathy and reliability required in this profession.

Shadowing a consultant in a Paediatric Preliminary Care Unit, I witnessed her dismiss a child’s concerns about an abdominal pain, and spoke to the mother in medical terms which did not effectively communicate the problem to her. On the other hand, another demonstrated how good communication can work wonders in drawing a patient out, with relatively simple questions like, “Have you eaten lunch yet?” This proved to be a highly thought-provoking experience, highlighting the importance of communication in medical practice.

During a project to raise funds for a local orphanage, we visited and spent hours with the children. I realised that what made them happiest was not the items we donated, but the fact that we spent time with them. The realisation that care is more valued than material items was humbling.

I wish to study abroad as repeated closure of local universities due to student unrest is discouraging and challenging. I wish to study in England as I have previously lived in the UK for a period of 5 years, and I am acclimated to the culture and language. English is also the main language of instruction of my current school. I hence believe that England would be a solid environment to be in whilst away from home.

Ranking second in the country at my GCE O/Level and maintaining a high academic level in my A/Level years has given me the confidence that I am able to cope with the academic demands of a medical degree.

Imperial Medicine Personal Statement Example Analysis

Now, let’s go section by section and see what Aneesha has to say about what she wrote:  

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Beginning with what fascinates me about the course and including real life experience to back it up demonstrates my enthusiasm and excitement for my chosen degree, as well as an understanding of what a career in medicine could involve. An introduction needs to quickly get the point across that you have a genuine reason for joining this course and that you would be an asset to the university for this reason. This is especially true when your explanation dives deeper into actual subject knowledge rather than staying surface level. If you plan on specialising into a specific area, mention it (although you need to be careful not to come off as stuck in your ways and unable to explore new fields).

In terms of improvements, I could’ve introduced my other reason for studying medicine in my introduction. As I have chosen to write my personal statement in a narrative style, my motivation for studying medicine is laid out chronologically, however I feel that introducing these ideas earlier on could improve the overall structure of my personal statement and make me appear to be a more diverse candidate.

These two paragraphs both cover my ‘work experiences’ and generally have a similar format, so I felt it was best to discuss them together. In these paragraphs, I have reflected on my experiences in hospital and a clinical environment, which demonstrates that I am able to learn from experience. It also demonstrates a realistic understanding of a career in medicine and its challenges. A general rule of thumb is that any work experience like this needs to be discussed in-depth when writing a personal statement. It’s the most relevant and some of the most challenging work experience you can do pre-med school. It’s also good to focus more on what you learnt and witnessed compared to the work you actually did. The lessons learnt from the professionals are more valuable than any amount of assisting and busy-work you likely had to do during your time there!

The biggest flaw with this section is with the structure. I feel that these paragraphs may seem a little disjointed, as I have taken different experiences and written them without including any statement tying these experiences together. These experiences aren’t too different from each other, so it shouldn’t have been too hard to find a theme that links them together and explains how everything discussed helped me grow as a person.

In my “work in a local orphanage” paragraph, I have demonstrated that I am able to work in a professional capacity, which is always a sign of a good candidate early on ( voluntary work is always a good look as well). I have also reflected on this experience and tied it back to how this experience is of value to develop skills necessary in my career of choice. Best of all, it shows the humility that anyone needs when working in medicine, as it is primarily a human subject.

It’s a very short section though, so I could have brought in more examples of work placements and how these experiences have shaped me, and reflected further on how these experiences helped me develop my understanding of myself and my capabilities. These wouldn’t have had to have been as in-depth as my work experience discussion, but mention more examples of learning experiences will show a more well-rounded character on the page.

In my “why do I want to study abroad” paragraph, I have highlighted a few reasons why I have chosen to leave home and learn in a completely new environment. I have also demonstrated that I feel confident in being able to acclimatise myself to this new environment. This may not be the most relevant information to provide in a personal statement, although it does display a great strength of my character and the skill of perseverance.

However, I feel that I could have highlighted what about the education system and course delivery in the UK interests me, and how I feel that this academic environment would be the best place for me to complete my degree and develop my skills. One piece of advice I can definitely give is this: UK applicant’s don’t really need to add a section like this to their personal statements!

As a school prefect, dealing with my peers who faced issues such as stress, mental health concerns, and coming to terms with a horrific terrorist bombing, I was required to be an empathic listener and someone who was willing to actively help my fellow students. I understood my capacity to help, but knew my limitations. The emotional demand also taught me how to keep myself healthy whilst helping.

Music is my outlet, and I find time to play in a number of orchestras and sing chorally. Playing with the Sri Lanka Symphony Orchestra, I have been able to meet people of various social strata, ethnicities, religions and sexualities. As leader of my school orchestra, I learned the value of being organized and punctual, and how to lead a team, which I feel are transferable in my career of choice.

These paragraphs again link together fairly closely, so it’s easier to analyse them together. In this “school/extra-curricular activities” section, I have demonstrated my academic capabilities as well as the skills I have developed in teamwork, communication , leadership and resilience , all of which are invaluable . While I have not gone too in-depth into any of these, it’s not really that necessary as they are all just smaller things that combine into a larger selection of skills and life lessons.

This paragraph could have been improved if I had linked it back to my paragraph on my work experience, and how the characteristics I developed linked back to my observations and reflections of a clinical environment. Having many individual experiences only gets you so far in your personal statement, almost anyone can go and do some of these things. The strength of them come from what you learn from them and how you can use all these experiences together to become a better medical worker. There are also some areas here that aren’t strictly necessary. If I had needed more space in other areas of the statement, this would have been the first place to make cuts.

Having seen the emotional and intellectual demand associated with medicine I feel it is a career which is both stimulating and ultimately rewarding. This is why I hope to follow this discipline through my life.

In my conclusion, I have briefly summed up all of the ideas I brought out through my personal statement, which links my paragraphs together and highlights what I feel are the key aspects of this statement. This is exactly what a conclusion should do. There’s no need to add extra information or anything else in the last moments of you statement, all you need to do is reflect upon and summarise what you’ve said.

This conclusion could have been further strengthened if I had mentioned a few key areas of my statement more specifically, in order to further demonstrate my understanding of what I feel are the most important segments. The reader wants to know that you fully understand what you’ve written and are genuine about the points you’ve made. The conclusion is the perfect place to do this, so being more specific, although not overly detailed, is a good idea.

Final Thoughts

I think my personal statement is honest and reflective, and the narrative style I have written it in demonstrates my journey in arriving at the conclusion I have. I feel that I have addressed several important questions such as why I have chosen this degree, what I have done to further my understanding of my chosen career, and how my personal experiences have shaped me in a way that lead to my choices. I also feel the answers I have provided are effective and convincing, using my real world experience to prove my commitment and skill in the field of medicine.

I feel that the structure of my personal statement is a little disjointed at times, as I have written about a number of experiences without linking them together. Providing the links in your development is the best way to legitimise what you have said and make for a more believable and engaging story. This problem is highlighted in my conclusion, which could have pointed out the key points in my statement better. This would have helped round out the statement and make the important parts of what I said stick out in the reader’s mind after they finished reading.

Everyone has different experiences and abilities, so you may not be able to relate to everything that was said in this personal statement.  Personal Statement

Briefly describe why you are well-suited for your role(s) in this project. Relevant factors may include: aspects of your training; your previous experimental work on this specific topic or related topics; your technical expertise; your collaborators or scientific environment; and/or your past performance in this or related fields, including ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to (previously captured under Section D. Research Support).

You may cite up to four publications or research products that highlight your experience and qualifications for this project. Research products can include, but are not limited to, audio or video products; conference proceedings such as meeting abstracts, posters, or other presentations; patents; data and research materials; databases; educational aids or curricula; instruments or equipment; models; protocols; and software or netware. Use of hyperlinks and URLs to cite these items is not allowed.

You are allowed to cite interim research products.  Note:  interim research products have specific citation requirements. See related  Frequently Asked Questions  for more information.

Notes: Peer-Reviewed Publications and Other Research Products

  • N on-peer-reviewed articles and research products can be cited in the Personal Statement along with the peer-reviewed publications. Follow the rules for citing Interim Research Products .
  • NIH requires a PMCID for works that apply under the NIH Public Access Policy and are authored by the applicant or arise from an applicant’s NIH award.
  • No specific style guide for citations is required. SciENcv formats citations from My Bibliography using the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Style Guide: Citing Medicine .
  • To save on space for the Personal Statement or Contributions to Science sections, applicants may use ‘et al’ in lieu of listing all authors in a citation.

This personal statement is part of this student’s successful admission to study Biotechnology at the Imperial College London , University College London (UCL) , King’s College London (KCL) and University of Edinburgh .

When I was seven, I started reading Chinese martial arts novel, which was how I started to develop an interest in biology. i know it might sound strange on how those two could relate, but allow me to explain. These characters in the novels seemed able to manipulate certain aspects of their body, such as blood flow and the flow of an internal energy, simply known as “chi” to hasten the recovery of an injury site or to expel poison of sorts. This got me thinking of ways on how humans could possibly achieve such incredible feats. Were there nerves connected to the valves in their blood vessels so that they can close and open them voluntarily? These questions were frivolous but they lead me down a never-ending tunnel of scientific wonder and hunger.

Besides satisfying my curiosity about circumambience, I indulge in science studies to fulfill my desire of winning, in a marathon of education. Student stress can be overwhelming at times. Thus I took up jogging to help to revive my weary soul. However, my stamina has always been remarkably low despite my best efforts to enhance them. Thus, I secretly wished to overcome my limitations through scientific research and breakthrough, much like Dr. Abraham Erskine had done to Steve Rogers, in the movie Captain America. At first he was a frail and sick man but after being treated with the Super-Soldier Serum, the metabolism in his body has been enhanced to the zenith of human potential. The human body is truly a scientific marvel with no boundaries.

Jogging is a part of my evening routine, but I still remember there was once I could not jog due to bad haze conditions. The smoke haze from the fires in Indonesia has been brought over by monsoonal wind and enveloped our country, Malaysia. Ever since I was illuminated of the various health problems posed to us by the haze, I had become concerned about environmental issues such as global warming and had hoped to involve myself in aiding the grand cause of restoring our environment.

I was the president of the robotics club back in secondary school. In 2011, our team decided to build an environmentally concerned robot which was able to detect and collect waste along the street. It was powered by solar energy and with its internal claw and various sensors, wastes were sorted accordingly for recycling. This Fully Automated Waste Disposal Robot won us the state champion and the excellence award in national level. To reduce carbon dioxide emission and save the earth, solar car is one of the most efficient solutions. I was given a chance to represent my school in a solar car competition.  During the duration of the competition, my team members and I solved the overweight problem of our car by using polystyrene casing instead of wood. Our car performance had also been improved by utilizing some gear ratio and circuit theories. As a result, we won as the first runner-up in state level.

Biology fascinates me in the way that it explains all minor yet crucial processes take place in living organisms. Like a watch made up of tiny cogs and screws, every single living cell that looks rather alike is able to work together and perform a specific function. It showcases the importance of compartmentalization and gives me an insight into the necessity to maintain individuality. Nevertheless, I never neglect chemistry, physics and mathematics throughout my education because all of them are interrelated and to master biology, they are of equal importance.

I am currently doing my A levels on pure science and like the knights-errant who never hesitate to help the less fortunate in martial arts novels I used to read, I hope I am able to use my scientific knowledge to make a meaningful difference to the world. To achieve that, I wish to pursue further studies at your university and gain precious knowledge that will surely be of upmost importance for me to pursue my dreams of introducing a better life to humanity as a whole.

Confidence in me is one of my biggest strengths, one which I developed when I took many seminars in my class, had to ensure that they were well explored, lucid and crisp, and delivered with confidence in an easily comprehensible language. Other than the theory papers, my undergraduate program had good lab programs which acted as a catalyst to my desire of assimilating to the maximum from the coursework. I have an avid curiosity for delving deep into these subjects, and this has motivated me to pursue a Master's degree.

I believe that out of class pursuits are as important as core academic excellence, for a holistic educational experience. Going beyond the precincts of the classroom, I have represented my college at "The Indian Science Congress" held in Kerala, from 3rd to 7th January 2017. I have also participated in the workshop on 'Food Safety Systems' held on 28th January 2017 at YYY College, Chennai.

Other than being the topper of my class, graduating as the gold medalist from my college, I have been an active participant in extracurricular activities held in my college and others. From regularly participating in many different dance programs, and other cultural activities, to acting as a member of the Organizing Committee of 'Chrysalis', a National Level Symposium held in my college in 2016. Lastly by planning an industrial visit to Bangalore for my entire department in March 2017, I found that my organizational skills were tested and I came out with flying colors as they were conducted with lan. I distributed the work according to the potential and motivated my team members to give their best. It was a learning experience, and I realized an effective leader is one who can empathize and work shoulder to shoulder with his team members.

To further nourish my research interest, I joined KNISS LABORATORIES, a renowned name in the pharmaceutical industry as a summer intern (2016). I worked there in microbiology lab and Quality Control Department. I studied the antimicrobial activities of natural herbal plants like Neem and Tulsi. This industrial experience was enriching, allowed me to view directly all the theory learned in my classes in a practical manner. From the internship, I have gotten a glimpse of the rigorousness of lab work along with the anxiety of anticipation, the pure exhilaration of a positive result. This has further strengthened my dream and desire to be a part of a laboratory where cutting edge research is performed.

My ultimate aim is to utilize the knowledge and training which I receive through my Master's degree to work in the biotech industry where I will look to hone and perfect my practical skills before eventually starting my own Research & Development Company. I hope, in the future, to create an effectual technology which will add value to human life.

To realize these dreams I need to broaden my horizons, receive both training and guidance. I believe that I will receive just this through a graduate degree in Biotechnology in Texas Tech. I feel that the curriculum and lab facilities are designed to allow students to gain good exposure to both the theoretical and practical side of the biotech industry, additionally the core lab facilities in the Centre for Biotechnology and Genomics are highly advanced, will be very useful for an aspiring Bio-technologist.

Mission statement, the key to success for biotech companies

In the biotech industry, having a strong company culture is essential for success. It helps attract top talent , keeps employees motivated, and fosters an environment where innovation can flourish. Tom Froggatt, CEO and founder of Singular , a recruitment and company culture consultancy firm in the biotech space, highlights the importance of the mission statement in biotech companies. According to him, three critical elements are required to build a coherent company culture: mission, purpose, and vision. These elements provide direction and motivation for employees, aligning their values with the company’s goals.

Companies like Genentech are known for their strong culture, which encourages innovation and supports employees, resulting in high satisfaction and retention rates​​. Similarly, Sabine Dandiguian of Jeito Capital notes that a positive culture, shaped by inclusive and supportive leadership, is crucial for retaining top talent and driving success​​.

In this article, we will explore how biotech companies can define their mission, purpose, and vision, and how these elements impact company culture, leading to better employee engagement and organizational success.

Defining mission, purpose, and vision.

In the biotech industry, the reasons behind any business can seem obvious. After all, the people who work in it are generally motivated by a desire to contribute to improving human health and society. While the “why” seems evident, Froggatt believes the mission statement and company culture lie in being specific about the difference your biotech will make, why you care, and then, communicating this message to people both inside and outside the organization.

Mission statement: What your biotech aims to achieve

According to Froggatt, a clear mission lays the foundation for everything a company does: “Everything starts with a mission. A good mission statement should outline what your biotech company aims to accomplish, the positive difference it seeks to make, and the real-world impact it will have if successful. Notably, it should have longevity and be broad enough to persist beyond current programs and objectives in place.”

A well-defined mission helps guide strategic decisions and operational focus. When everyone in the organization understands and aligns with the mission, it creates a unified direction that drives every action and decision. To illustrate, Froggatt gives the example of his own company: “Singular’s mission includes helping biotech companies build their ideal teams, allowing them to focus on developing medicines and treating patients, which ultimately supports saving lives.”

Purpose: Why your biotech does what it does

The purpose is closely related to the mission statement but focuses on why the biotech company does what it does. It explains the importance of the work and why it matters. 

“Purpose is the driving force behind your company’s actions. It explains why your mission matters, why individuals within your biotech should care, and who will benefit from its success,” said Froggatt.

Purpose fuels passion and commitment within the team. When employees understand and resonate with the biotech company’s purpose, they are more likely to go the extra mile. This sense of purpose can enhance job satisfaction and foster a sense of belonging and value among employees.

Vision: What the future looks like for your biotech

Vision identifies what the biotech business will look like when it achieves its mission. It encompasses the atmosphere within the company, the sentiments people express, and the memorable aspects of the journey. Froggatt provides insights on crafting a compelling vision: 

“Whilst mission is what you do and purpose is why you do it, vision identifies what your biotech business will look like when you achieve your mission. Your vision needs to illustrate a compelling future by highlighting what success means, looks like, sounds like, and feels like for your biotech.”

A compelling vision inspires and excites people both inside and outside the company. It helps employees see themselves as part of the bigger picture and motivates them to work towards the common goal. In biotech, where not all projects will reach the market, having a strong vision ensures that the journey remains meaningful and motivates the team to persevere despite challenges​​.

The vital role of mission, purpose, vision, and culture in biotechs

But why is all this so important? Froggatt told us that the mission statement, purpose, vision, and company culture are where he always starts, with his own company, the businesses he advises, and even the associations he is a board member of. “If you figure out where you are going, why you are going there, and what it’s going to look like, the rest of it becomes easier and it’s simply a good place to start from.”

Mission statement, a driver for team efficiency

Froggatt identifies several positive impacts of building a biotech company culture around the mission statement, purpose, and vision. The first is the efficiency of the company’s workforce.

“It provides a greater direction and allows to align objectives, as the work everyone does individually is contributing to this greater direction, which ultimately makes a team more effective.”

A strong mission and purpose significantly enhance employee engagement and productivity.  “For a great proportion of people working in the sector, having a clear sense of mission and purpose drives a sense of belonging, value, and contribution, whilst a compelling vision allows people to imagine a positive future both for themselves and for their careers,” said Froggatt.

Research supports these claims. A study by the Harvard Business Review found that purpose-driven companies outperformed non-purpose-driven ones in various areas, such as growth, global expansion, product launches, and success in major transformation efforts​​.

Company culture, a reason to stay

Deloitte Insights’ 2020 Global Marketing Trends Report revealed that purpose-driven organizations experience 40% higher levels of workforce retention than other organizations​​.

“Generally speaking, people want to feel they are working for something bigger than what they can achieve on their own. If you have a really clear mission statement and vision, it is easier to get candidates through the door because they are buying in for the bigger picture. Regarding employee retention, in every job, there are bad days and good days. The difference when contributing to a purpose and vision through a clear mission is that you are not in isolation and you can write off these bad days easier and the good days become even more impactful,” said Froggatt.

Froggatt also highlights that in his experience and according to Singular’s surveys over the years, the main reason why people leave their jobs in the biotech industry is career development. “If someone is a senior scientist and there is a lack of clarity on how they become principal scientists, they are significantly more likely to leave than if they can clearly see the future of the company and their future within it.”

Making vision-coherent decisions

You have to make a lot of decisions when you run a company, and if you make each decision based on its own merits, you might make the best decision at a given time but it might also point in different directions. “If all decisions are made with purpose and vision in mind, you should broadly find your way where you wanted to go in the first place,” said Froggatt.

Froggatt says some companies are created with a clear sense of mission, purpose, and vision but not all. However, having a clear mission statement at one point does not guarantee it will remain clear over time. As Froggatt puts it, “Even companies that start with a strong sense of mission can lose sight of it if it is not well looked after.” A lot of time in biotech, vision is directed toward patient impact. However, this ultimate goal is so far down the line it is easy to lose it along the way by focusing on short-term objectives. In Froggatt’s opinion, this is where the leadership team plays a key role.

Leaders as the embodiment of the mission statement

Leadership plays a crucial role in fostering and maintaining a company culture that aligns with the organization’s mission, purpose, and vision. Froggatt emphasizes that leaders must embody these elements to inspire their teams and ensure consistency across the organization. “Leadership needs to be the living example of the company’s mission, purpose, and vision. If leaders do not embody these values, the culture will not be authentic and will fail to resonate with employees.”

Creating a purpose-driven culture starts with leaders who authentically understand and live by the company’s purpose. Leaders must not only articulate the company’s purpose but also integrate it into daily operations and decision-making processes. This involves setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and celebrating behaviors that align with the company’s values.

Tom Froggatt offers practical advice for biotech leaders: “Leaders should actively communicate and demonstrate the mission and purpose through their actions. This includes making strategic decisions that align with the company’s values and recognizing employees who embody these principles.”

A purpose-driven culture also implies getting employees involved in shaping the company’s purpose and values. Leadership should create opportunities for employees to contribute to the company’s mission through initiatives like volunteering and community engagement. This approach not only enhances employee engagement but also reinforces the organization’s commitment to its purpose​​.

Challenges to building company culture in the biotech industry

Building a supportive culture in biotech companies comes with its own set of challenges. One common challenge is ensuring that the company’s mission and values are consistently communicated and embodied by employees. This requires ongoing effort and commitment from leadership. 

Another challenge is maintaining a cohesive culture during periods of rapid growth or change, which can dilute the company’s core values and mission. This is particularly true for biotechs as they are working with long timelines and no certainty that the product they are working on will reach the market.

It can be challenging to work on short-term missions with objectives that are so far down the road. Froggatt encourages leaders to think beyond the usual stakeholders, meaning patients and investors. 

“You can have an impact on both patients and investors but the vast majority of biotech projects don’t ever reach patients, and that doesn’t mean that what the company was doing wasn’t worthwhile. It has had an impact on the people working in your team, on its suppliers, and on anyone involved in the journey. The company’s achievement might also advance science and, in the long run, allow someone else to achieve what you were aiming for.”

The fact that most biotech companies are venture-backed can also be a difficulty in maintaining a mission statement coherent with the purpose and vision of the company as the stakeholders’ objectives might differ from the company’s.

“One difficulty I would attribute to any science-driven industry is the skepticism regarding company culture’s value. We have worked with several companies where the initial response to the mission statement discussion has been ‘I need to be in the lab, how long is this going to take?’ So you have to break that resistance a bit and show the evidence that it’s important and not a marketing exercise where the values say one thing and behavior another,” said Froggatt.

It can also be a challenge to shift from a research-oriented organization to a product-based company, Froggatt pointed out. 

“When you’re on day one of having spun something out of university, you are not the company you need to be to keep it going forward but you need to ask the question of what company you need to be and what company you are comfortable being.”

Despite these challenges, the benefits of a purpose-driven culture and mission statement in biotech companies are substantial. Companies with strong cultures often see increased growth and retention. Purpose-driven companies attract top talent who are looking for more than just a paycheck and seek meaningful work that aligns with their personal values and goals.

How to measure a company culture’s effectiveness

Assessing the impact of company culture on strategic goals is crucial for understanding how well it supports the overall mission and vision. Tom Froggatt emphasizes the importance of using both qualitative and quantitative measures to evaluate cultural effectiveness.  

“A comprehensive approach to measuring culture includes employee engagement surveys, performance metrics, and qualitative feedback. Regularly reviewing these metrics helps ensure that the culture remains aligned with the company’s goals and values.”

A few tools to assess the impact and coherence of company culture include:

  • Regular surveys can provide insights into employee satisfaction, engagement, and alignment with the company’s mission and values. These surveys often include questions about job satisfaction, sense of purpose, and perceived alignment with the company’s vision​​.
  • Tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as employee retention rates, productivity levels, and innovation metrics can help quantify the impact of culture on business outcomes. 
  • Conducting focus groups, interviews, and open feedback sessions allows for a deeper understanding of how employees perceive the culture and its alignment with the company’s goals. This data can highlight areas of strength and opportunities for improvement​​.

“Combining quantitative data from surveys and performance metrics with qualitative insights from employee feedback provides a holistic view of the cultural landscape. This balanced approach helps identify both successes and areas needing attention,” said Froggatt.

Adapting culture and maintaining vision

As companies grow, it is essential to ensure that their culture evolves while remaining aligned with their mission and vision. This requires proactive strategies to maintain cultural integrity amid expansion and changing business dynamics:

  • Regularly communicate and reinforce the company’s core values to ensure they remain central to the organizational culture. This can be done through leadership communications, onboarding programs, and ongoing training sessions​.
  • Develop cultural practices and rituals that can scale with the company. This might include regular meetings, recognition programs, and community-building activities that promote a unified culture​​.
  • Invest in leadership development programs to ensure that leaders at all levels embody and promote the company’s mission and values. Leaders play a critical role in fostering a positive culture​.

Maintaining focus on the company’s mission and vision is challenging during periods of rapid growth. Froggatt advises, “It is essential for leadership to consistently align strategic decisions with the company’s mission and vision. Regularly revisiting these foundational elements during strategy sessions and decision-making processes helps keep the company on track.” 

The key, according to Froggatt, is to work your way back from the mission statement and vision of the company, and define what kind of business the company needs to be to achieve it and what routes it is comfortable taking along the way. This leads to conversations about the core values of the company that must be kept alive.  

In Froggatt’s opinion, science and other success factors aside, biotech companies that got the mission statement and culture right, have much higher chances of survival. 

“The example I often give is Vertex Pharmaceuticals, which had their lead program fail in a clinical trial, which for most companies would be the end of the road. But, because it had a great team aligned with its culture, the company has been able to pivot into a new disease area and change how cystic fibrosis is treated, and they are the huge success story we all know today.”

Biomedical engineering personal statement example 1.

I think that applying engineering techniques to the human body is a fascinating, absorbing and rewarding endeavour with many potential benefits for health care.

Arguably, all engineering disciplines seek to further our quality of life, however, what interests me in bioengineering is that it can directly affect and improve our health and well being.

Applications like innovatively designed needle-less injections could reduce the great number of injuries due to syringes, and developments in minimal access surgery using imaging techniques will be incredibly valuable, for example, in reaching otherwise inaccessible disease areas.

While undertaking work experience at a General Practice, I quickly realised that I would like to have a positive impact on health care, whilst retaining a focus on engineering.

Physics is a subject which absolutely fascinates me; I really enjoy observing theoretical ideas being utilized in real world situations. This passion has led me to be the Physics Student Leader, where I have taken the responsibility of going into physics lessons in the Lower School and helping the younger students.

Furthermore, I have spent time with other subject leaders considering the possibility of reducing the environmental impact of our school. I also attended a Particle Physics Master class at Durham University, where I learnt about projects such as CERN.

Mathematics also greatly interests me; so much so that I have been independently reading about topics like the calculation of pi by mathematicians including Gregory, Leibniz, and Machin which I first read about in Enigma by Robert Harris. I also enjoy working through the complex problems I encounter in mechanics and applying the techniques I have learnt.

Whilst Physics and Mathematics are my preferred subjects, I also enjoy all aspects of science, whether it is from the biological or the physical sciences. For example, in biology I found the structure of the heart and the way it works particularly interesting. Thus the multi-disciplinary bio-engineering course appeals to me as it will incorporate many different areas of science.

I read both Student BMJ and the New Scientist; recent articles of interest include one on apparent imperfections in human evolution.

In July 2006 I spent three weeks doing volunteer work in Costa Rica organised through my local Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. We worked for a short period with an indigenous tribe and also worked at a turtle conservation project, where we built a raised walkway from local bamboo.

My experience there opened my eyes to third world culture and environment, and improved my communication skills and my ability at working as part of a team. I can also work independently which is shown in my success in studying an A-level in Religious Studies a year early, in my own time.

I am currently studying Further Maths AS-level in my own time because I enjoy the challenge it presents me, and because I believe it will help develop my mathematical aptitude, which is an important ability for any engineer.

One of my main leisure interests is playing the guitar, which I find thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable. I play many styles, including classical, jazz and I am involved in a rock band called 'Required By Fashion,' with whom I helped organise two charity gigs. In my church I play in the worship band.

Through church I have been on Christian Adventure Holidays in the Lake District where I took part in mountaineering, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing and ghyll bashing, which were all great fun! The Christian faith has also helped me to develop a strong sense of morals and a compassionate attitude to other people.

I like to think that I have the maturity and commitment to succeed at university, and believe I will enjoy and rise to the challenges I encounter. I feel I will also add to the university community and have the potential to achieve.

Your Christian faith has nothing to do with the course your applying to, I dont understand why its mentioned? For me biomedical engineering and religion dont go well hand in hand lol
