Master Angsuman is a young boy who loves playing cricket. He is approached by a relative who is the production controller for a well known film director who is directing a thriller set in Darjeeling. Angshuman is asked to play the part of a young boy who is a son of a reputed industrialist (in the film). In the film he is visiting Darjeeling with his mother and coincidentally he looks identically same as the son of their bungalow caretaker. A goon kidnaps the caretaker's son thinking him to be the industrialist's son (as they had swapped clothes that day). However, he is saved by an inspector who appears as godsend (his double is played by the stuntman). They visit Darjeeling and Master Angshuma is made to feel at home by the heroine Madhavi who loves him very much; almost like his own mother. An interest character, Jaggu enters the scene as the villain of the main cinema. He is a famous villain from Mumbai and highly reputed. However, he seems to be not a very pleasant character since he insults almost everyone from the very beginning. They visit the house of an industrialist who is a famous gem collector having a famous diamond. Also, Angshu makes friends with Master Krishnan, the stuntman who is actually a Bengali. During the shoot the diamond gets stolen and the whole story revolves around how the culprits are caught and how Angshu and Krishnan play a role in catching them. I particularly loved the film since it shows a beautiful relationship and camaraderie between Angshu and Master Krishnan and the acting is also quite good.

The Sympathizer, review: Vietnam war spy series is the most fun Robert Downey Jr has been in a decade

T here’s a galaxy-brained clip from Park Chan-wook ’s 2013 gothic melodrama Stoker that goes viral on Twitter every few months. It’s a close-up shot of a woman’s hair being combed, the strands seamlessly transforming into a bird’s eye view of a dense woodland. In The Sympathizer , the new seven-part miniseries created by Park and Canadian writer Don McKellar, there are maybe a half-dozen transitions of comparable strangeness and ingenuity within the first few episodes. Shots that make you sit forward and think, just what am I watching? To be clear, that’s a good thing.

Adapted from the Pulitzer-winning novel of the same name by Vietnamese-American writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer is set in the aftermath of the US war in Vietnam . At its centre is The Captain (Hoa Xuande), an official within the American-backed police force, who is secretly feeding information to the communist Viet Cong. After Saigon falls, he flees to the US as a refugee, where he continues his serpentine double life under the nose of the paranoid General (Toan Le). With echoes of the German spy thriller Deutschland 83 , this is a story of internal contradiction, of cultural identities at war with themselves.

Much of the dialogue is Vietnamese, and so are much of the cast. But stealing the headlines – if not quite the scenes – is Robert Downey Jr, who plays four separate roles. The Peter Sellersian gimmick casts the Iron Man star as a twisted CIA handler, a culturally appropriative college professor, a sandpapery congressman and a maverick Francis Ford Coppola-esque filmmaker. This lattermost character, introduced three episodes in, gets involved when he starts making a film about the Vietnam war (a la Coppola’s Apocalypse Now ), and, for the Captain, fact starts blurring with fiction.

It is perhaps a meagre compliment to say this is some of Downey’s best work in years. Freshly returned from Marvel’s creative Siberia, Downey rediscovered critical favour last year with his starchy, Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer ; his performance here is much looser, and quite fun to behold – even if it’s several shades broader than anyone else on screen with him. (His camp, orientalist academic is a particularly indulgent creation.) Xuande is solid and intriguing in the lead role, but the standout is Sandra Oh, who gives a fascinating and layered performance as Sofia Mori, a Japanese-American secretary caught in a love affair with the Captain.

Between Downey’s character-juggling, the constantly time-skipping narrative structure, and a snappy, hair gel-slick aesthetic sensibility, it would be easy to write off The Sympathizer as being more style than substance. But make no mistake, this is a series that is really about something, that tackles expansive subject matter with clarity and verve. At a time when market oversaturation has turned starry TV miniseries into grey and missable propositions, The Sympathizer justifies its existence emphatically.

‘Eric’ Shows What Happens When a Puppet Master Loses Control

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?

You know, that old chestnut.

Technically, Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Henson, but a fictional peer of the late, great puppet master: Vincent Anderson, creator and chief puppeteer of a beloved, long-running public television kids show called Good Day Sunshine . In one episode Vincent and his producer Lennie (Dan Fogler) even discuss a past encounter with Henson, which is perhaps Eric creator Abi Morgan’s way of ensuring that no one mistakes the man she’s writing for the genuine article.

In the end, Morgan and her collaborators (including director Lucy Forbes) are probably trying to squeeze too many concepts and tones into six episodes. But the ideas behind Eric  — both the Netflix show and the cranky puppet within it — are intriguing enough, and most of the execution effective enough, that it’s always interesting, even when it’s messy.

The Lux also becomes a focus of Ledroit’s search for Edgar, even though it’s clear he has a long history with the club’s owner, Gator (Wade Allain-Marcus), that makes it hard to be objective on that subject. The tentacles of the case extend to the club, the AIDS crisis for gay men during this period, pre-Giuliani attempts to clean up the streets by any means necessary, and more, in ways that both deepen the story and interfere with it. The missing-child investigation is so urgent and emotional that it all but overwhelms everything else in the early chapters, making largely unrelated subplots — including one about political fights backstage at Good Day Sunshine — feel distracting. As if to acknowledge this, Morgan tells the audience a lot about what happened to Edgar by midway through the six-episode season; that allows the other stories to seem more vital, but sucks a lot of suspense out of the main plot.

Morgan is of course far from the first person to look at the world Jim Henson created and see more adult possibilities. The Tony-winning musical Avenue Q made the gay subtext between Bert and Ernie into text for bickering roommates Rod and Nicky, and had its Cookie Monster analogue sing a song called “The Internet Is for Porn.” Homicide cop Melissa McCarthy teamed up with a puppet private detective in 2018’s The Happytime Murders . Modern TV shows like Greg the Bunny , Wonder Showzen , Kidding , and more have used Muppet-esque characters for variably adult purposes.

For that matter, Henson himself tried early and often to avoid being defined solely as a children’s performer. For the first season of Saturday Night Live , he created a group of puppets for a recurring sketch set in a fantasy world called Gorch. One of the early pilot episodes for what became The Muppet Show was subtitled Sex and Violence . And once he had successfully taken Kermit, Fozzie, and Miss Piggy to the big screen, Henson used his Hollywood blank check to make more intense, less kid-friendly fantasy films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth .

But given his desire to take puppetry to strange, adult places, and given that Morgan does pretty clearly delineate Vincent from the man who inspired him, I can’t help thinking that the actual Jim Henson might have really enjoyed Eric .

All eight episodes of Eric begin streaming May 30 on Netflix. I’ve seen all eight.
