Network Design in Maintenance Inventories for Electric Utilities

  • Network Design
  • Risk Management

Within the electric distribution space maintaining a balanced inventory of spare parts forms a critical component of resiliency and restoration in the event of an outage. We find that leveraging network design provides an opportunity for utility companies to improve the effectiveness of the inventory they hold, enabling better service at a lower cost. For one regional utility company in the United States, an inventory reduction of 35% was found by adopting a hub and spoke model over a previous decentralized model. We believe that this observation can be extended to other companies with distributed assets, highly variable demand for inventory, long lead times, and a high cost of downtime.

Human Decision-Making with Machine Prediction: Evidence from Predictive Maintenance in Trucking  (with Maggie Yellen)

In this paper, we study the role of predictive artificial intelligence (AI) in human decision-making.  Using a rich decision-level data set from the maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, we document how the repair decision-making of expert technicians changes with the introduction of an AI tool designed to predict the risk of truck breakdowns.  We develop and estimate a dynamic discrete choice model of technician decision-making. The resulting estimates show that technicians with the AI tool exhibit a substantially better ability to predict breakdown risk than those without the tool.  This improvement in predictive ability translates into better outcomes: The AI tool reduces the total costs that technicians incur by $240-$480 per truck per year.  This brings the technician close to the efficient frontier; only 15% more cost savings could be achieved by further improvements in the quality of decision-making.  The AI tool enables these cost savings by helping technicians avoid costly, unnecessary repairs.

Long-Term Relationships in the US Truckload Freight Industry  (with Thi Mai Anh Nguyen)

Conditionally accepted at AEJ: Microeconomics

This paper provides evidence on relational contracting in the US truckload freight industry. In this setting, shippers and carriers engage in repeated interactions under contracts that fix prices but leave scope for inefficient opportunism. We describe empirically the strategies of shippers and the responses of carriers. We show that shippers use the threat of relationship termination to deter carriers from short-term opportunism. Carriers respond to the resultant dynamic incentives, behaving more cooperatively when their potential future rents are higher. While shippers and carriers often interact on multiple lanes, we show that separate relational contracts appear to govern transactions on each lane.

Long-Term Relationships and the Spot Market: Evidence from US Trucking  (with Thi Mai Anh Nguyen)

Long-term informal relationships play an important role in the economy, capitalizing on match-specific efficiency gains and mitigating incentive problems. However, the prevalence of long-term relationships can also lead to thinner, less efficient spot markets. We develop an empirical framework to quantify the market-level tradeoff between long-term relationships and the spot market. We apply this framework to an economically important setting—the US truckload freight industry—exploiting detailed transaction-level data for estimation. At the relationship level, we find that long-term relationships have large intrinsic benefits over spot transactions. At the market level, we find a strong link between the thickness and efficiency of the spot market. Overall, the current institution performs fairly well against our first-best benchmarks, achieving 44% of the relationship-level first-best surplus and even more of the market-level first-best surplus. The findings motivate two counterfactuals: (i) a centralized spot market for optimal spot market efficiency and (ii) index pricing for optimal gains from individual long-term relationships. The former results in substantial welfare loss, and the latter leads to welfare gains during periods of high demand.

Which Workers Benefit from AI?  Estimating Heterogenous Effects on Productivity

This extension of my job market paper aims to explore heterogeneity in how technicians utilize a predictive AI tool in making engine repair decisions for heavy-duty trucks. By combining data on technician characteristics with rich data on repair decisions, this study seeks to address two pivotal questions: First, how might the quality of technicians’ decision-making vary with experience? Second, how does the introduction of a predictive AI tool differentially affect the quality of decision-making for technicians with different experience levels? The first question speaks to the returns to experience in this context. The second speaks to whether predictive AI tools act as complements to or substitutes for such experience. The findings aim to offer insights into the distributional impacts of predictive AI on professional human decision-makers, as well as potential effects on incentives for these decision-makers to invest in experience (i.e., human capital).

Long-term Relationships and Supply Chain Resilience (with Thi Mai Anh Nguyen)

Recent supply chain disruptions have highlighted the vulnerability of the goods economy to upheaval in freight transportation markets.  In the US, the trucking industry may represent a particular susceptibility, both because of its singularly central role (72% of all domestic shipments are transported by truck) and because of its peculiar market institutions.  As described in our first two papers, long-term relationships, rather than a centralized spot market, are the key means of arranging trucking transactions.  This likely affects the ability of the industry—and thus, the US goods economy as a whole—to adjust to shocks.  If transactions in this industry were arranged through a spot market, we would expect price signals to effect a rapid adjustment to shocks.  However, in a world where transactions are actually arranged through a decentralized network of informal long-term relationships with prices that are (at least in the short-run) fixed, this may not be true.  With this motivation in mind, this study analyzes—at the micro level—how shocks affect relationship stability and—at the macro level—how such shocks are transmitted through relationship networks.

If you are working with one of these companies, be sure to discuss thesis copyright with your research advisor early in your MEng.

Formatting and Submission

MIT Libraries maintains formatting guidelines for all MIT theses. It’s especially important to make sure your title page and abstract look exactly like the examples shown there. Many students start by using the Unofficial Thesis template , but remember to double-check against the official formatting guidelines. Check out the Thesis Checklist from the Libraries to help keep on track.   Submit your title page information . This is important for ProQuest selections and for speeding up thesis processing for the MIT Libraries.

For EECS MEng theses

  • Make sure to include your SB degree information (see the title page example ), even if you’re getting SB and MEng concurrently. Include double major, if applicable (e.g. “S.B. Computer Science and Engineering and Mathematics”).
  • The department is “the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science”
  • The degree is “Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science” unless you are part of the 6-7 MEng program, in which case it’s “Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Molecular Biology” or the 6-14 program which is “Master of Engineering in Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science”. (Note, in all cases, “Master” not “Masters”)
  • The degree date for this term is September 2024 no matter what month you submit your thesis. The only possible degree date months are May, September, and February.
  • The author hereby grants to MIT a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to exercise any and all rights under copyright, including to reproduce, preserve, distribute and publicly display copies of the thesis, or release the thesis under an open-access license.
  • The name/title for the “Accepted by” line on the title page is “Katrina LaCurts, Chair, Master of Engineering Thesis Committee”

For the electronic submission, your title page should include no signatures ; not even your own, and no lines for signatures . When you are ready to submit your thesis, you can do so here ; the deadline for submission is set by the registrar each semester (see here ). 6-A students must also submit a thesis release letter that matches this template . These letters should be sent to [email protected] .

Thesis Holds

Under certain circumstances – most commonly for issues related to patents or security clearances – you can arrange for a brief delay of the official publication of your thesis in the MIT Libraries. Please see The Office of Graduate Education’s page for more information.

Guidelines for the use of ChatGPT when writing your EECS thesis (MEng, SM, PhD)

ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that assists with the composition of text, such as text found in emails, essays, and code. Text is also found in the thesis that is required as one deliverable of an advanced degree in EECS. The EECS Department views a “thesis” as a compilation of the contributions made to the field by the author, or a discussion of the knowledge acquired in answering the research questions. The student is the authority of the material contained or described in the thesis and is the sole author. The EECS Department expects the author of the thesis to compose original drafts of the text to convey accurately and completely the work accomplished for the advanced degree in EECS. Once a final draft of the thesis is obtained, ChatGPT may be used to improve the grammar or to provide a manner of proofreading of the draft. The EECS Department does not allow the use of ChatGPT to compose text starting from bulleted text or from an arrangement of phrases. If ChatGPT is implemented in the creation of a final thesis, that is submitted to DSpace for archival storage, the EECS Department requests that the use of ChatGPT to be acknowledged, or referenced, in the submitted thesis manuscript. (Effective April 20, 2023)

Prior MS Theses

Here is a sampling of MS theses.

It is a good idea to have models on which to base your thesis. All theses are measured both by thoroughness, references, and novelty. Also extensibility. It should teach and be a basis on which others build.

In general, there are several types: engineering, science, design, art, etc. (After Bill Mitchell) An engineering thesis describes a solution to a problem and is evaluated by whether it works and improves the art. A science thesis proves a theorem. Design is evaluated by critique and iteration by experts. For example, redesigning the signage at an airport ought to show how it works better and is elegant as determined by peers in the field.

Note that when choosing a model it is tempting to pick a thesis that is not the best. If you want a model, chose the best. I have supervised over 50 theses, many stand out. Sometimes the thesis is the full picture of a student's graduate career, other times it is just one component.  Discuss your model with me.

The most important thing about a thesis is that it be done. The statistical mode of thesis readership is 2—you and me (A paper gets a far larger audience.) We have broad latitude in what goes into it. (A PhD thesis, on the other hand, is perfect; time is the free variable.) You have to define a hypothesis that can be shown/proven in the allotted time. "In the fullness of time" is not an evaluation. E.g., I don't endorse a thesis that is based on the inevitability of VR.

Remember, a thesis is not a memoir. Your personal journey can be an organizing thread but not a theme. Posterity doesn't care about you—it cares about what you contributed.

Finally, all of these students left a positive imprint on the lab. Every student in the group or lab did better as a result of their contributions.

AbstractThis thesis discuss how United Parcel Service (UPS) develop its aircraft maintenanceprogram after import of McDonnell Douglas MD-11aircraft and the process of exporting newMD-11 aircraft from manufacturer in USA to European operator as passenger aircraft. It alsodiscusses the process of importing the same types of aircraft as freight carrier. The aircraftundergo, through different modifications at Singapore Technologies Aerospace (STA)conversion from passenger to freight carrier, a program specially designed for UPS airlinesbefore import to USA.The thesis work was carried out in close communication with the maintenance department atUPS in California and Kentucky, McDonnell Douglas manufacturing plant in Missouri and atBoeing in Washington. The aim of this thesis was to examine and discuss the rules and regulation of import andexports of aircraft in U.S. based on UPS import of MD-11 aircraft. Furthermore, to discussthe transformation of maintenance program from one airline to another, with emphasis onhow U.S. operator develop their maintenance program.McDonnell Douglas manufactures MD-11 aircraft, and as aircraft manufacturing companythey must comply with the United States of America Federal aviation regulation part 21requirements. Besides that, the company has bilateral agreement with the buying countrySwitzerland, facilitating the reciprocal airworthiness certification of civil aeronauticalproducts exported between the two parties. Bilateral airworthiness agreement or aviationsafety agreement with implementation procedure for airworthiness facilitate the airworthinesstechnical cooperation between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its counterpartSwitzerland Civil Aviation Authorities (SCAA).UPS buy MD-11 aircraft after being modified as freight carriers. In order to obtainairworthiness certification from FAA UPS and Boeing secures that the aircraft is airworthyand have got appropriate overall maintenance service through a careful investigation processof the technical history and background of the aircraft. After receiving the FAA certificateUPS in cooperation with Boeing develop the maintenance program, before the aircraft isassigned for service in the UPS fleet.During my work it has been difficult to find information about the technical history of theaircraft, mainly because the first operator Swissair became bankrupt and all documentationwas transferred to Boeing and then to UPS. There were also many companies involved in theprocess of converting passenger aircraft to freight carrier, like ST Aero Subsidiary, Sasco inSingapore and Boeing. The work can be used as a reference to check what part of FAA deals and documents areneeded for import and export of aircraft, and what should be done to start the import andexport process. It guides the reader to an immediate understanding of regulatory organizationand their particular departments or part numbers.

Today, one of the most impressive applications of optimization is the training of large AI models. But currently such models are trained with ad-hoc heuristics and a very large computational cost, mainly due to lack of understanding of their working mechanisms. In this thesis, we conduct a systematic study of large model optimization, crucially informed by its use in practice. The aim of this thesis is to extract insights, which in turn will help us to design better optimization algorithms in the future. The first part of the thesis investigates two interesting phenomena regarding optimization of Transformer-based models, one of the most popular architectures for language modeling. We investigate how training Transformer-based models can lead to remarkable properties, such as in-context learning, and we also aim to understand the main challenges associated with Transformer training. The second part of the thesis focuses on understanding practical optimization algorithms. Motivated by the success of Adam in practice, we offer a theoretical understanding of its effectiveness based on an online learning that underscores the importance of Adam’s algorithmic components. We then discuss the working mechanisms of flatness optimizers, such as sharpness-ware minimization (SAM), a practical optimizer known to improve model prediction performance. We formally define the notion of flat minima, and study how algorithms like SAM can efficiently find flat minima.
