Highway, A Destination Film, A Journey To Free Myself

Destination films are often a balm to our souls, allowing us to escape from the confines of our homes, something we all craved especially in the year of the pandemic. We dreamt of bachelor trips in Spain, trekking with school friends in Manali, and of spiritual awakenings in Bali.

But some journeys are more liberating than others. Some free you from the shackles of pain you've put on yourself, from the mufflers you put on your own heart and throat so that your every day could be a little bit more bearable. One such journey is the one Veera Tripathi (played by a mesmerising Alia Bhatt) undertakes in Imtiaz Ali's Highway (2014).

Highway follows a young daughter of a Delhi industrialist, kidnapped from a petrol station, who discovers what it feels to be free on the roads of India. The film co-stars a magnetic Randeep Hooda as the kidnapper and petty thief Mahabir, who kidnaps Veera with his compatriots, not realising her father has powerful ties to the government.

As they travel across the country evading the police, Veera discovers newfound independence, one away from her haunted past of being sexually abused by her family. She reveals this to Mahabir, whose conflicted feelings about the girl he kidnapped grow to become affection. He even tries to help her escape by dropping her off at a police station, but she vehemently refuses, as she has found happiness in the vagabond life that she and Mahabir shared.

As they both share troubling stories from their childhood, we see two kindred souls becoming balms for each other's spirit, a momentary love story that soothes us in the process. This, like most road movies, is a bildungsroman, but the journey Veera takes is not just the one where she is physically kidnapped, but also towards her choice to be free and unapologetically herself. She discovers the futility of running away from her problems deep within the salt flats of Gujarat and reflects on the expanse of the world around her at the foothills of the Himalayas. Gone is the quiet, compliant girl in the first twenty or thirty minutes of the film; we begin to see the spark of curiosity and the childlike joy that she spreads to everyone around her.

Highway was a painful first watch for me, especially the visceral reaction at the end of the film when Veera finally confronts her tormentors and allows herself to feel pain at Mahabir's death. It was a provocative mirror for me, one that pushed me to confront my own struggles with mental health. But it was equally the freedom and empowerment Veera felt in occupying her own space, alongside the struggle to let go of what hurt her, that allowed me to act upon my own tribulations.

Since 2014, I can safely say that I've not only played 'Patakha Guddi' on repeat as a fight song, but last year permanently inked the Irshad Kamil lyrical masterpiece on my left arm, to serve as an everyday reminder of how proud I am of my journey to myself. So, I implore you, dear reader: go on, find yourself.

Highway is a mystery criminal thriller film in Telugu that was written and directed by K. V. Guhan in 2022. It was produced by Venkat Talari under the banners of Sree Iswarya Lakshmi Movies and Northstar Entertainment. Principal parts in the movie are played by Anand Deverakonda, Manasa Radhakrishnan (in her Telugu debut), and Abhishek Banerjee (in his Telugu debut). Highway made its debut on Aha on August 19, 2022.

Anand Devarakonda’s character Vishnu begins the movie by narrating his tale.

Rewind: Vishnu is a photographer who resides in Hyderabad with his mother, sister, and grandma. As Asha Bharat (Saiyami Kher) and her team investigate the case of a serial murderer named ‘D’ (Abhishek Banerjee) who kills young girls for his delight, he flies to Bangalore with his longtime buddy Samudram (Satya) to shoot a wedding. In contrast, D kills another girl, bringing him and Asha closer to each other. Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), a young, innocent, and beautiful village girl who lives with her mother and works on a dairy farm, decides to travel to Mangalore to escape her boss’s torture in order to marry her and meet her father, who abandoned them.

The Road review: Director Arun Vaseegaran’s latest is a riveting thriller

The film maintains its intense pace with excellent narration, full marks to the director for his gripping story.

Director Arun Vaseegaran comes up with an investigative thriller — The Road — that keeps you entertained for the most part.

The film is intense and engaging, thanks to a refreshingly fresh plot that has two parallel sets of developments happening in two different parts of the state.

An immensely content woman, Meera (Trisha) is thrilled to know that she is pregnant with her second child. However, she is also slightly disappointed that the pregnancy will not allow her to undertake a road trip that she promised her young school-going son Kavin, for his birthday.

Unwilling to disappoint her son, she lets her husband Anand (Santhosh Prathap) take her son on the trip.

Both father and son set off on the trip, intending to return in a couple of days.

However, fate delivers a cruel blow. A car heading on the opposite side of the highway loses control and swerves around to cut the median and crash into Anand’s car, killing them both.

Meera is shattered by the news of their deaths. She rushes to the spot and suffers a shock, resulting in an abortion.

Eventually, when Meera goes to the spot of the accident to pay homage to her son and husband, she becomes aware that the crash which killed her husband and son could not be merely dismissed as an accident and that it may well have been orchestrated.

A parallel story.

In another part of the state, Maya (Shabeer Kallarakkal), a professor at an arts and science college, is immensely respected for his professionalism and hugely admired by his women students for his physical attributes. One girl in particular looks to propose to him.

A dedicated teacher with strong moral and ethical values, Maya turns down the proposal. Enraged at having been rejected, she levels a MeToo allegation against him, saying that the professor sought sexual favours from her.

The false allegation ruins Maya’s life. He is humiliated and thrown out of the college.

Even after that, the humiliation continues with villagers targetting not just him but also his father who has been slogging all his life to get his son educated.

At one point, both Maya and Meera’s lives converge. What happens then is what the film is all about.

Shabeer kallarakkal steals the show.

The Road gets off to a blistering start with a couple that is stranded on the highway being murdered by dacoits. Right from that point on, the movie maintains its intense pace with some excellent narration by the director.

Full marks to Arun Vaseegaran for his intense and gripping story that keeps you on the edge of your seats. The story’s intensity goes up one more notch once Meera begins investigating the accident.

Trisha, as Meera, does a decent job in the film.

Shabeer Kallarakkal, who received widespread praise for his portrayal of the character Dancing Rose in Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), steals the limelight in the film with yet another powerful performance.

Shabeer’s portrayal of Maya makes a profound impact on you. Maya’s struggle to come to terms with the cruel blow that eventually results in his father hanging himself makes you feel for his character. In fact, that is exactly what makes the film work.

Sam CS’s background score is perfect and KG Venkatesh’s visuals are striking.

Except for editor Shivaraj, who could have been a little more unforgiving while trimming the climax, The Road has a sound technical team that has delivered a neat product.

The Road has very few flaws, other than the fact that its climax is unnecessarily long. Apart from that, the film is an intense and gripping thriller that is definitely worth your time and money.

திரை விமர்சனம்: மாயோன்

ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பழமையானது என்று நம்பப்படும் பிரம்மாண்ட கிருஷ்ணர் கோயில் ஒன்று மாயோன் மலை எனும் ஊரில் பிரசித்திபெற்று விளங்குகிறது. அக்கோயில் கருவறையில் புதையல் இருப்பதாக ஓலைச்சுவடி மூலம் அறிந்து, அதை எடுத்து வெளிநாட்டுக்கு விற்க திட்டமிடுகிறார் தொல்லியல் அதிகாரி தேவராஜ் (ஹரீஷ் பெரடி). அதே துறையின் இளம் அதிகாரியான அர்ஜுன் (சிபிராஜ்), அவரது திட்டத்துக்கு கைகொடுக்க தன் நண்பர்கள் குழுவுடன் முன்வருகிறார். ஆனால், அந்நிய படையெடுப்பாளர்கள் புதையலை அபகரிக்காமல் இருக்க, முன்னோர்கள் ஏற்படுத்தி வைத்திருக்கும் தடைகள், அமானுஷ்யங்களை கடந்து அந்த குழுவால் புதையலை எடுக்க முடிந்ததா என்பது மீதி கதை.

அருண்மொழி மாணிக்கம் திரைக்கதை எழுதி தயாரித்துள்ள படத்தைகிஷோர் இயக்கியுள்ளார். அமானுஷ்யம் கலந்த ஆன்மிகம், அறிவியல் எனஇரண்டுக்கும் சமமான முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்து திரைக்கதை அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதேநேரம், கதைக் களத்தில் நடக்கும் அனைத்து விஷயங்களுக்கும் காரணம் ஆன்மிகமா, அறிவியலா என்பதை, புத்திசாலித்தனமாக பார்வையாளரின் முடிவுக்கே விட்டுவிடுகின்றனர்.

பூச்சிபோல தோற்றமளிக்கும் ட்ரோன் ஒன்றை வைத்து கர்ப்பக்கிரகத்தில் உள்ளகல்வெட்டு எழுத்துகளை தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் காட்சியில் தொடங்கி நிமிர்ந்து உட்கார வைத்துவிடுகிறது படம்.

கோயில்களில் புதைத்து வைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் அரிய செல்வங்களை பாதுகாப்பதற்காக, அவை தொடர்பான பல தொன்மங்களை உருவாக்கி வைத்திருக்கும் பண்டைய தமிழர்களின் அறிவுசரியாக உணர்த்தப்படுவது பாராட்டத்தக்க விறுவிறுப்பான அம்சம்.

நாயகனை முன்னிட்டு இறுதியில்நிகழும் திருப்பம் (ட்விஸ்ட்) நம்பகத்தன்மையுடனும் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.சில இடங்களில் கிராஃபிக்ஸ் என அப்பட்டமாக தெரிந்தாலும், ஒட்டுமொத்த காட்சி அனுபவமாக பார்வையாளரை கவரவே செய்கிறது.

சிபிராஜ், கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு கச்சிதமாக பொருந்துகிறார். தான்யா ரவிச்சந்திரன், கே.எஸ்.ரவிகுமார், ராதாரவிஉள்ளிட்டோர் கொடுத்த வேலையை சரியாக செய்கின்றனர். நாயகனின் அறிவியல்பூர்வ அறிவு வெளிப்படும் காட்சிகளில் நவீனமாகவும், அமானுஷ்யக் காட்சிகளில் உருக்கமாகவும் ஒலிக்கும் இளையராஜாவின் பின்னணி இசை படத்துக்கு பெரிய பலம்.

ஒரு புதையல் வேட்டை கதையில், அறிவியல், ஆன்மிகம், அமானுஷ்யம் ஆகியவற்றை சேர்த்து கலவையான பொழுதுபோக்கு படமாக கொடுக்க முயன்றுள்ளனர் எழுத்தாளரும், இயக்குநரும். அந்த வகையில், புதையல் வேட்டையில் பல நம்பகமான திருப்பங்களை சேர்த்திருந்தால், மேலும் சுவாரஸ்யமாக இருந்திருப்பான் இந்த ‘மாயோன்’.
