  • How To Create a Resume That Lands You the Job
  • News & Blog

At Goodwill, your generous donations help support our mission of fighting unemployment in Arizona. Proceeds help us fund our no-cost career centers that provide individuals with job resources, like resume review and interview training. If you’re currently looking for a job, read on to learn how to create a resume that will stand out and help you land the job. After you’ve completed your resume, come see us at one of our career centers and we’ll be happy to review it and provide some feedback.

Design and Formatting

You don’t need expensive software to format a beautifully designed resume. Start by making sure the most important stuff is at the top. An objective is no longer needed, but you may opt to include a career summary as an introduction. Then, utilize bullets and short paragraphs to break up the page and direct the eye down the page.

It is still a general rule that your resume should fit on one page. You may need to remove some “fluff” in order to do so. As you narrow in on a specific job you want to apply for, you can delete experience that doesn’t apply to that particular job. Do a test print to make sure it fits on one page. If you have more than ten years of experience, overflowing onto a second page is acceptable as long as everything on your resume is pertinent to your application.

Selling Yourself

It is a difficult challenge to communicate your entire career, work ethic and accomplishments on one piece of paper. It’s vital though that you sell yourself to a potential employer. This can be tough for some people, so consider asking old colleagues or friends to describe your strengths and successes. You may be surprised how others perceive you.

The key to selling yourself is to talk about accomplishments rather than responsibilities. If you can quantify those accomplishments, that’s even better. For example, if your work increased sales by 10%, include that number. Use colorful action words when appropriate, but don’t go overboard with the thesaurus.

Tailoring to a Specific Job

Start with a base resume that you can use on your online networking profiles. Then, once you find a job that you want to apply for, create a resume version specific to that job. Look for keywords in the job description that you can work into your resume.

Another way to tailor your resume is by tweaking a job title to match what the job seeker is looking for. This doesn’t mean you can give yourself a promotion, but if your title was Marketing Coordinator, you can adjust it to Marketing and Communications Coordinator to better match the job you’re applying for.

Check out our online career services or find a career center near you for more helpful resume tips.

5 ways to add metrics to your resume for quantifiable success.

When writing a resume, you can probably do a good job of explaining your day-to-day responsibilities without too much guidance. But simply listing your daily tasks won't catch the eye of the best employers.

Recruiters expect to see real achievements and measurable results on your application, especially as you climb the corporate ladder.

As your seniority grows, so should your ability to demonstrate how you’ve made an impact in past roles.

Metrics are a powerful way for you to do this. Using facts and figures, you can quantify your accomplishments and provide real evidence that will impress future employers.

With that in mind, here are five ways you can add metrics to your resume for quantifiable success.

Ghost Of Tsushima Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam

Wwe smackdown results, winners and grades with stratton vs. belair, biden trump debates what to know as trump pushes for 2 more faceoffs, 1. show percentage increases/decreases.

Percentages can be an excellent way to highlight improvement or growth in your previous positions and there are several ways you can use these. You can show how you've helped to increase efficiency or revenue, or how you’ve led to a decrease in complaints or dissatisfaction.

For example, if your customer service led to a 30% increase in positive online reviews or you implemented a new employee wellness scheme that reduced staff turnover by 25%.

You can include examples like these when outlining your daily responsibilities and achievements in your employment history.

If you've got any really impressive percentages, you might even wish to include these in your personal profile to grab the recruiter’s attention right away. Perhaps you’re a marketing professional who grew Instagram engagement by 56% in six months, that’s worth shouting about early on.

2. Share dollars generated or saved

In business, money talks and if you are able to make or save an impressive amount of cash, potential employers will want you on board.

If relevant, mention the amount of money you were able to generate or that you helped to save your previous employers. These metrics lend themselves nicely to roles like sales, HR, and project management, as well as most management positions.

But if you've introduced cost-cutting measures, driven sales, or increased the efficiency of resource allocation in any role, you should showcase these numbers.

Give the exact amount where possible, for example, if you introduced a new automated tool that resulted in a $20,000 saving over 12 months. Again, you can include these in your employment history and personal profile if relevant.

Recruiters expect to see real achievements and measurable results on your resume.

3. Highlight time saved and deadlines exceeded

Being able to save time and increase efficiency is good for business, as is meeting and exceeding deadlines. That is why you should showcase your ability to meet deadlines or complete projects ahead of schedule.

You might wish to highlight how you streamlined tasks or processes and how much time was saved as a result. Give days or hours if possible, you could also give this as a percentage or monetary value depending on the result.

An example of this might be ‘completed a project two weeks before the deadline, saving the company $5,000 in labor and receiving excellent feedback from the clients’.

4. Prove your impact on targets or KPIs

Throughout your career, you’ll be working towards different targets and you’ll often be given key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure your success.

So, if your work has directly impacted KPIs or you've achieved and exceeded targets for your organization, be sure to include these metrics.

This might be increasing website traffic, hitting sales targets, or improving employee retention rates. Whatever the case, make sure to quantify the exact impact of your contributions as best you can, such as ‘increased social media followers by 10,000 in three months, exceeding targets by 30%’.

These metrics can be used to show your achievements in past roles and therefore, are usually best placed within your employment section. That being said, if you achieved anything particularly impressive during your time in education and exceeded your own targets, these may also be relevant.

For example, ‘graduated in the 95th percentile with a GPA of 4.0, 0.6 points higher than predicted’.

5. Provide people-related metrics

Lastly, people can make or break a business and as you take on more senior roles, it’s likely you’ll be responsible for a larger number of people, whether employees or customers.

Giving examples of how many people you've managed or teams you've overseen speaks well to your leadership skills, and being able to handle large accounts or projects is also important. Therefore, be as detailed as you can with your people-related metrics.

Whether you’ve managed a portfolio of 50+ clients or you headed up a team of 20, incorporating these metrics into your resume can grab the recruiter’s attention.

No matter your job title or industry, there will always be some impressive metrics you can include to boost your resume. So, following the advice above, make sure to quantify your achievements whenever possible and provide solid evidence of your skills. That way, you can demonstrate your value to future employers.

An engineer landed jobs at Google and Microsoft with this 2-page résumé — and describes the section she considers a non-negotiable

  • Sonakshi Pandey switched roles at Amazon, then moved to Google to be a customer engineer.
  • Pandey credits mentorship with transitioning her career and growing more confident.
  • Pandey's résumé includes company blogs and a section on her volunteering and mentorship projects.

Insider Today

Sonakshi Pandey did not always feel prepared for the role she is in today.

She landed a job as a software engineer at Amazon straight out of her master's degree in computer science. For three years, she did what she loved: writing code.

"I was very shy, very introverted," she told Business Insider. "I used to wear my headphones and code for eight hours straight."

One day, she came across a YouTube video, where a tech expert was speaking about databases in depth. She admired how confident he sounded.

"I want to exactly do what this guy is doing: I want to go on a stage and I want to talk confidently in front of a bunch of people," she said.

It triggered her journey to change roles from software development to solution architecture at Amazon Web Services, a job that required more public speaking and client presentations.

After five years at Amazon, Pandey wanted to try working at other FAANG companies and applied to Microsoft and Google in 2021.

Related stories

She shared the résumé that helped her land an offer at Microsoft as well as the one she accepted at Google, a customer engineering position.

Looking back on her 2021 résumé, Pandey said that there are two unique things about the document that worked in her favor.

1. Writing for company blogs

During her time at AWS, she wrote blogs for Amazon's cloud computing page.

Blogs reflect thought leadership — so if you want to build a brand as an expert in any industry, she said having blog posts on a bigger medium like a company website helps underline your expertise.

Pandey said she would not include some of her other public work, such as her career advice pages on Instagram and YouTube.

"I don't want that to deflect attention from my product manager skills," she said.

2. A section on volunteering — even though it makes her résumé 2 pages long

Pandey's section on volunteering, which discusses her mentorship projects, make her résumé exceed the typically recommended one-page rule. But adding that section is a non-negotiable for Pandey, she said.

For her, the section reflects an important part of her journey in tech — she dealt with imposter syndrome and hesitated with public speaking, and now she helps other women overcome the same issues. Pandey credits her transition to having a mentor at Amazon. "She recommended books to read, podcasts to listen to, and it eventually got me to killing it at my job."

The projects she founded and led are her way of paying it forward.

"I feel this is very important to have and is a piece of me that I want to share with everyone wherever I go," she said. "And that's why I was like: It doesn't matter if it's two pages, this needs to be here."

She said it also helped her in interviews. Pandey talks about her mentorship experiences when hiring managers ask scenario-based questions and discusses her initiatives when the interviewers give her time to introduce herself.

If she were to update the document today, she said she would only add her certifications and recent blogs at Google, and beef up her volunteering section with more recent diversity and mentorship projects.

Pandey is currently a data and product manager at Google's Seattle office. BI has verified her employment history.

Trump will face Michael Cohen in court as prosecution nears the end of its case

Stormy Daniels is finished testifying, but another popular target of former President Donald Trump is scheduled to take the witness stand in his criminal trial on Monday — his former lawyer Michael Cohen, multiple sources have told NBC News.

Both Daniels, an adult film actress, and Cohen, Trump's onetime fixer, are outspoken critics of the Republican presidential nominee and key witnesses in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's falsifying business records case. The former president has labeled them both "sleaze bags."

The move to call Cohen comes as a prosecutor said at the end of court Friday that they could rest their case as soon as next week. Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass told the judge that the DA’s office has only two witnesses remaining. Cohen's testimony is expected to last multiple days.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche asked Judge Juan Merchan to bar Cohen from commenting publicly on the case since he’s about to take the stand. He noted that Cohen appeared on TikTok earlier this week wearing a T-shirt showing Trump behind bars wearing an orange jumpsuit. Blanche had previously complained about Cohen posting on social media and doing interviews criticizing Trump during the trial. Cohen had slowed his frequent commentary after Merchan said he may exclude him from the gag order barring Trump from attacking witnesses in the case because of his commentary.

Steinglass said the DA’s office had previously asked Cohen to stop speaking. The judge directed the DA to tell Cohen that the judge was asking him to stop.

Trump fumed about the lack of a gag order for Cohen after the day's proceedings wrapped. “Everybody can say whatever they want” but “I can’t say anything, “ he told a group of reporters in a courthouse hallway. “It’s a disgrace.”

Daniels testified on Tuesday and Thursday, sparring with Trump attorney Susan Necheles during cross-examination about her claim that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Then-Trump lawyer Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about the allegation during the 2016 presidential election. Trump later reimbursed Cohen in payments prosecutors charge were covered up with falsified business records. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied Daniels’ claim.

Earlier in the day, jurors heard continued testimony from Madeleine Westerhout, who was Trump's executive assistant in the White House between 2017 and 2019.

Follow live updates on the Trump hush money trial

Westerhout had testified on Thursday about how thrilled she was to be working for Trump and broke down in tears when prosecutors asked her about her departure from the White House in August 2019. She said that working for Trump was “amazing” and that he was “a very good boss” who had a close and loving relationship with his wife, Melania Trump.

The portrayal was at odds with testimony from Daniels, who said Trump had told her not to worry about his wife while he was making passes at her in his hotel room after they met at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in 2006.

Westerhout also testified Thursday that Trump was attentive when she delivered him personal checks to sign and that on occasion he would call his company’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, if he had questions about any of them — information prosecutors are likely to use to argue Trump was well aware of what he was paying Cohen for.

On Friday, Trump attorney Susan Necheles got Westerhout to say that Trump wasn’t always paying attention when he was signing checks — and he would sometimes be on the phone or in meetings while he did. “He was a person who multitasked, right?” Necheles asked. “Yes,” Westerhout replied.

Necheles also pressed her on details about Trump's reaction when the payment to Daniels became public in 2018.

"He was very upset by it,” Westerhout said. “My understanding is that he knew it would be hurtful to his family. … The whole situation was very unpleasant.”

Westerhout said one of her duties was to act as an intermediary between Trump and the Trump Organization on issues that needed his or the company’s attention, like his travel schedule, mail or phone calls.

She asked Trump's assistant at the company, Rhona Graff, in 2017 for a list of Trump’s contacts, which Graff sent to her, according to an email shown to the jury. The list included information for Cohen and  David Pecker , the former National Enquirer publisher who testified he worked with Trump and Cohen to suppress scandalous stories about Trump during his 2016 campaign.

Westerhout was followed to the stand by Daniel Dixon, an analyst for AT&T who was brought in to authenticate "call detail records" relating to Cohen's cell phone.

Jennie Tomalin, an analyst from Verizon, was also called to authenticate phone records from Keith Davidson, Daniels' former lawyer, and former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg.

She was followed by Georgia Longstreet, a paralegal for the DA's office, who was brought in to testify about some of then-President Trump's social media postings that prosecutors say were an effort to influence Cohen and other people he was concerned could cause him legal problems.

One of the posts praised Cohen as "a fine person with a wonderful family" before he began cooperating with federal investigators. After he pleaded guilty to charges that included ones related to the Daniels payment, Trump tweeted, “If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!”

Longstreet also read aloud texts between then-National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard and Gina Rodriguez, who was Daniels' manager. The 2016 texts included Howard telling her he thought Pecker would pay for her story. Pecker said he did not do so because he'd already spent $180,000 to kill two other salacious Trump stories, and he feared doing business with a porn star could harm his paper. But, he said, he did encourage Cohen to pay the money.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche moved for a mistrial at the end of court Thursday, arguing Daniels' testimony — including her claim that Trump didn't use a condom when they had sex — was unfair and prejudicial. He called the condom allegation "a dog whistle for rape."

State Judge Juan Merchan agreed that Daniels shouldn't have been asked about the condom but noted that there was no objection to that line of questioning, which he said befuddled him.

"I don't understand," he said.

He denied Blanche's mistrial demand, as well as a request that he loosen the gag order barring Trump from attacking witnesses to allow him to respond to Daniels' testimony.

Prosecutors have previously said they are hopeful they'll be able to wrap up their case by May 21.

It's unclear whether Trump will testify in his own defense. He is under no obligation to do so.
