Guide To Becoming a Frontend Developer: Job Skills and Responsibilities

A woman at a computer learning to become a frontend developer.

Most of us interact with multiple websites and mobile apps every day. We click buttons, log in and out, and add products to our cart without thinking about who made it all possible.

But every time we interact with a website or app, we enjoy the work of a frontend developer.

That sounds like a fantastic job. But is it worth becoming a frontend developer in 2024? And how do you even get started?

This article tells you what you need to know about what frontend developers do, the skills they need, and how you can get the job.

Are you an employer looking to hire a frontend developer? We cover that too.

What Is a Frontend Developer?

A frontend developer uses code to implement a website or application design.

Their primary tools are HTML , CSS , and JavaScript — HTML for the website’s general structure and content, CSS for styling, and JavaScript for advanced interactivity.

What Is Frontend Development?

Frontend development is the development of the website’s user interface. Anything that the user can view or interact with (like the layout, images, menus, or login form) is considered the site’s frontend.

The other primary type of web development is backend development. The user doesn’t see a backend developer’s work, but it makes the website possible. The backend of a site includes servers, databases, backend logic, and APIs.

Front end vs back end development

You’ll also hear the term full-stack development. Full-stack developers are generalists who do both frontend and backend development.

What Does a Frontend Developer Do?

A frontend developer builds and maintains the frontend of a website or application. Examples of the parts of a website they work on include:

  • Navigation features
  • Social media integration

What Are the Responsibilities of a Frontend Developer?

A frontend developer is responsible for building a website or application that provides an enjoyable user experience. That means it looks good and functions the way it’s supposed to.

Frontend developers usually aren’t responsible for the design of the site. However, they will work closely with UI and UX designers to turn their ideas into reality.

Once the site or app is built, frontend developers are responsible for maintenance, testing, and ongoing developments like feature upgrades.

What Skills Do You Need to Be a Frontend Developer?

Every frontend developer needs to be skilled with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Those three languages are the foundation of almost everything you’ll do.

You’ll need other skills, too, but the same skill set required will vary from job to job.

The list below covers some of the most common skills required for frontend development jobs. Knowing as many as possible will make you the best candidate for a broad range of positions.

HTML and CSS

HTML and CSS  go hand-in-hand and are the building blocks of website design.

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It defines the structure of a web page. For example, you’ll use HTML to indicate where headers go, where to put a paragraph break, and where to insert an image. All the text and images you’re seeing on this very page are all thanks to HTML.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, and it deals with style. For example, CSS might dictate the background color or font. You can use a single CSS stylesheet to define styles across a site (i.e. multiple pages at once).

A good frontend developer is experienced with HTML and CSS and can quickly understand how to use them together to create a design.

Luckily, HTML and CSS are pretty easy to learn. But truly mastering them can take time.

Once you’ve picked up the basics, you can practice your coding skills by looking at existing websites and trying to clone the layout and features you see.

While HTML sets the framework and CSS defines style, JavaScript makes a website interactive.

If a website is doing more than displaying static information, it’s probably thanks to JavaScript. For example, you can use JavaScript to create a map that updates in real-time or to animate part of your website.

According to a StackOverflow survey, JavaScript is the programming language used the most by professional web developers. The next most popular language is HTML/CSS.

Programming languages used by professional developers in the last year

JavaScript is more complex than HTML or CSS, but is still one of the more accessible programming languages. Expect that you can learn it in a matter of months.

React and Other JavaScript Libraries and Frameworks

JavaScript libraries and frameworks  are tools that make JavaScript development faster and easier.

A JavaScript library is a set of reusable codes that you can put into your project. It saves you the trouble of developing a feature from scratch when other developers have already done it.

There are over 83 libraries in existence, each of which has a specific purpose. For example, Chart.js is a library that allows you to create charts and graphs for your website easily.

A JavaScript library that you should be familiar with is React. React is a free, open-source library maintained by Facebook. It’s used to build user interfaces for single-page applications and is currently the most popular JavaScript library.

JavaScript frameworks are similar to libraries. They both provide reusable code, but the usage is a bit different.

When you use a library, you’re in charge of the flow of the application. You decide where in your code to call a library component.

With frameworks, you’re plugging your code into the framework. Instead of your code calling the library, the framework calls your code at designated points.

A couple of popular frameworks to be familiar with are Angular.js  and Vue.js .

Node.js is often mistakenly called a framework or a programming language, but it’s a runtime environment for frontend and backend development.

Typically, the user’s browser renders JavaScript. Node.js lets you run your JavaScript code outside of a browser.

Node.js is popular because it makes web development more efficient. It allows programmers to create the frontend and backend of an application using a single programming language.

You might have to use Node.js in your frontend developer job, so it’s a good thing to learn. You can download and install it yourself so that you can practice.

Ajax is short for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Ajax isn’t a technology by itself , but a set of programming techniques.

Ajax is about asynchronous development. That means that you can update the web content on a portion of a webpage without reloading the entire page.

A typical example is auto-complete. When you start typing a search query into Google, the search engine will offer you auto-complete options. It can do this without reloading the entire search results page.

Many frontend developer jobs call for familiarity with Ajax concepts. Once you’ve mastered JavaScript, online tutorials can teach you how to use it for Ajax.

Other Programming Languages

Depending on the project you’re working on, you may want to know other programming languages  beyond JavaScript.

For example, TypeScript is an increasingly popular programming language developed by Microsoft. Typescript is a superset of JavaScript. Unlike JavaScript, it was designed to create enterprise-level applications.

JavaScript is an essential language to know, but once you’re proficient with it, you can look into other possibilities like:

Knowing a programming language or two beyond JavaScript can set you apart as a job candidate.

We’ve talked about frameworks and libraries for JavaScript.

CSS also makes use of frameworks. The most important one is Bootstrap.

Bootstrap is a free collection of reusable pieces of code written in HTML, CSS, and (optionally) JavaScript. It lets developers quickly build fully mobile-responsive websites.

As a frontend developer, it’s helpful to have at least a basic knowledge of Bootstrap. There are many online courses and tutorials available but don’t dig in until you’ve developed a strong understanding of HTML and CSS.

Content Management Systems (CMS)

A Content Management System  is software that helps users create, edit, and manage content on a website without the need for technical skills.

For example, you can type up a blog post and add it to your site without worrying about the HTML and CSS used to display the post.

WordPress is by far the most popular CMS. Others you’ll come across include Drupal, Joomla!, and Ghost.

As a frontend developer, you’ll often work on websites that use a CMS. Working knowledge of these platforms is a marketable skill.

You may also be able to do some work creating new themes for WordPress  or other Content Management Systems.

RESTful Services and APIs

An API (Application Programming Interface) allows an application or service to access a resource within another application or service.

For example, a developer might want to integrate weather data into their website. They could use an API that reaches out to a weather service and gets the data.

RESTful APIs are a type of API that conforms to the constraints of the REST (Representational State Transfer) architectural style and allows for connection to RESTful web services.

As a frontend developer, you won’t need to write your APIs for others to call (that’s a backend job), but you should know how to call an API and display it meaningfully on your site.

Mobile-Responsive Design

These days, visitors to a website use a wide variety of browsers and devices.

It’s not enough for a website to look good on a laptop screen when mobile devices account for 54.8%  of global website traffic.

Some websites will have separate versions for desktop and mobile versions, but more commonly, you’ll need to build the site to be mobile-responsive .

A responsive website is designed to render well on any device, window, or screen size.

Mobile adaptive vs mobile responsive design screenshot

It matters whether a website is mobile-responsive. 45% of consumers will abandon any piece of content displaying poorly on the device they are using.

Since there’s no such thing as a website that doesn’t need to work on mobile anymore, understanding responsive design principles is a non-negotiable skill for a frontend developer.

Responsive design is accomplished through HTML and CSS. It’s not intuitive, but many online courses and resources are available.

Cross-Browser Testing and Development

A website needs to look good and work right on any browser. While Chrome is the most popular browser , developers shouldn’t overlook Safari, Edge, or Firefox.

Part of your job as a frontend developer will be to ensure that your work looks good on any major browser. That means understanding the differences between browsers and testing your designs on them.

You can read up on cross-platform development on popular coding resource sites. You should also practice. When you do projects on your own, please don’t neglect to test them in multiple browsers.

There are also tools available to help you do cross-browser testing. A few that have free versions include:

  • BrowserStack
  • CrossBrowserTesting

Version Control Systems

A version control system helps you keep track of changes made to your website’s code. You can use them to revert to an earlier code version if something goes wrong.

That can save a lot of time in case of an error. Instead of finding the problem and manually undoing it, you can roll back the project to an earlier version.

Version control systems are also essential for collaboration. They allow multiple users to work on the same project without conflicting versions.

Git is the most popular version control management system and will be needed for many development jobs, whether frontend, backend, or full-stack. Get started learning by installing Git  and creating an account on GitHub.com .

How to Become a Frontend Developer

The most important qualification for becoming a frontend developer is proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a few of the other skills listed above. Without coding ability, nothing else on your resume matters.

These days, it’s possible to learn coding on your own using online resources.

40.39%  of current web developers took an online coding course, 31.62% learned from online forums, and 59.53% used other online resources like blogs or videos.

To learn web development, check out sites like:

  • StackOverflow

Where current developers learned to code screenshot

It’s possible to teach yourself code, but that doesn’t mean your formal education doesn’t matter. Many frontend developer jobs prefer or even require that you have a related degree. If you don’t have one, you’ll have to make sure your web development portfolio  speaks for itself.

So, how do you create a portfolio if you don’t have work experience?

One way to show off your frontend development skills is to build websites and applications independently. Create a tool related to your interests or see if anyone you know needs development work done.

Are Frontend Developers in Demand?

Becoming a web developer is a great career move. We can expect to see 8% job growth in the next decade. That’s around 13,400 job openings per year — much faster growth than the average profession.

Both frontend and backend developers are in demand, but there are slightly more job openings for frontend developers. On Indeed.com, there are currently 14,600 open frontend developer jobs in the U.S., while 12,300 are available for backend developers.

What’s the Average Frontend Developer Salary?

According to Glassdoor, the average frontend developer salary is $86,088 .

That’s not the whole story, though.

Web developer salaries can vary wildly depending on the type of company, the skills needed for the job, your location, and your experience level. You can expect to make a higher salary if you stick with it for years. People with the title senior frontend developer make an average of $107,276.

What to Look for When Hiring a Frontend Developer

Many web developers are out there, but the truly talented ones are hard to find.

When hiring a frontend developer , here’s what to keep in mind.

Technical Skills

Every frontend development job is different. Go into the hiring process to understand the exact mix of skills you’re looking for.

That said, web development is a constantly changing field. If you’re going to be working with this developer long-term, their commitment to learning new skills is even more important than their current skill set.

You can test candidates’ technical skills by giving them a short coding test. If they do well, it’s also helpful to assign a small (paid) test project. Use it to evaluate their attention to detail, the creativity of their solutions, and how well they communicate with team members.

Other Skills

In addition to coding skills, a good frontend developer understands the importance of the user experience.

Frontend developers create the elements of a website that users interact with. They aren’t UX designers themselves, but a good frontend developer knows how to make a positive experience for website visitors.

Your frontend developer should also have strong interpersonal skills. They’ll work with other team members and stakeholders and communicate effectively about projects.

Becoming a frontend developer is an excellent career move.

It’s a job you can teach yourself online, the potential salary is high, and there’ll be demand for your abilities for years to come.

The best way to become a frontend developer is to learn everything you can about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related skills. You can do that through school or teach yourself using online resources.

As business strategists and project managers scramble to create seamless user experiences (UX) and user interfaces (UI), front end web development teams have never been more crucial than before.

By constructing compelling front end interfaces and final products, businesses can better tap into the psychology of attracting consumers and future clients.

In this article, you’ll be fully equipped to harness front end web development teams to reinforce the quality of future projects. Stay tuned to learn more about it!

What Is Front-End Web Development?

You know, when we browsed website homepages, blogs, and online publications in the early 2000s, information was haphazardly organized.

They displayed near ancient-looking windows and website tabs of information that were densely allocated and difficult to navigate.

However, with the sharp rise in user-centered design methods and best practices in HTML, CSS, and other front-end development frameworks/languages, website layouts improved dramatically .

Now, imagine yourself today scrolling through top-of-the-line consumer-corporate websites including Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, and Google.

Notice any common features?

Seamlessly structured UI/UX web layouts with accessibility in mind .

In broad terms, the front-end of a website includes all facets and external elements that the users interact with.

Whether they’re navigating dropdown menus, using adjustable sliders, or scrolling through sections upon sections of website information, front-end web development accounts for all related factors.

At this very second in time, more than 1.5 billion active websites are shooting their best shot at designing and engineering beautified front-end UI experiences.

As a result, a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript have established themselves as staple design languages in the front-end development realm.

Front-end developers will mesh a multi-layered approach of markup and programming languages/frameworks to create a front-end architecture for immersive user experiences.

How To Develop an Effective Front-End Web Project

Effective front-end developers and UI/UX projects integrate several criteria, including:

  • User accessibility
  • Compatibility with their user base/audience, and
  • Sleek user interfaces

That all together to tap into the subconscious pleasures of the user audience.

In other words, front-end developers are responsible for optimizing and tailoring the sweet spot proportion of an attractive user interface.

What’s this elusive sweet spot, you may ask?

It is a practical, yet alluring, user interface that actively engages the audience using essential design elements and UX research.

In order to achieve this sweet spot, front-end developers adaptively use HTML, CSS (markup languages), and JavaScript (programming) to create the functional foundation of a sleek UI.

However, high-performing front-end devs will progressively become familiar with associative frameworks including Bootstrap, Foundation, Backbone, Angular, React.js , and EmberJS .

This recipe-like combination of front-end design languages and frameworks allows companies to create responsive pages and mobile-friendly (i.e. website content will appear the same on all devices) that reach more expansive audiences.

Front-end developers will precisely streamline this process between seamless user experience and user interface by cross-collaborating with designers and UX analysts.

Together, they create preliminary mockups/wireframes and prototypes to better visualize final user-face features and interactive elements.

All in all every surface-level detail you can perceive and digitally interact with was made possible by a front-end development team , composing a final exterior design for the user to indulge in.

Although the components of a web page unify disparate sources of media, anywhere from photographs to logos and content, front-end developers effectively compose them into a final story that both engages the user in real-time and impresses them enough to return .

What Does a Front End-Web Developer Do?

As the complexities of front-end development and UI/UX have increased drastically, the job description of a 21st-century front-end web developer has become equally as demanding.

Front-end web developers are generally responsible for implementing essential visual elements and UI designs that enable seamless interactivity and functionality with a web application.

Typically, front-end developers will actively collaborate with back-end developers and full-stack software engineers to streamline and coordinate server-side application logic as well as front-end integration.

In other words, back-end and front-end developers form the bread and butter of creating a fully capable web application with both function and form in mind.

For companies with non-specific and broad web development job criteria, the bare-minimum responsibilities of a front-end developer include the following:

  • Developing novel user interfaces (UI) and user experiences (UX)
  • Build and deploy reusable code, frameworks, and front-end libraries for future applications.
  • Evaluate and determine the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs via mockups and wireframe presentations.
  • Optimize web applications with responsiveness, scalability, clean navigation, and speed in mind.
  • Aggregate user feedback and ensure that all user-level features and design methods are validated before submitting final versions to the back-end.
  • Collaborate with the full-stack ecosystem; work with other team members and stakeholders to configure UI/UX designs accordingly.

Additionally, recruiters should eyeball the following technical qualifications , anywhere from HTML5 and CSS3 markup to server-side web app integration:

  • Proficiency in web markup, including HTML5 , CSS3, and their associated libraries.
  • A rudimentary understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, including LESS and SASS .
  • An actionable understanding of client-side scripting and modern JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery .
  • Highly encouraged to possess advanced JS framework and library-level knowledge , including AngularJS, KnockoutJS, BackboneJS, ReactJS , DurandalJS, etc.
  • Possesses a firm grasp of asynchronous request handling , partial page updates , and AJAX implementation .
  • Baseline knowledge of image authoring tools, manipulation, and best practices including cropping, resizing and performing minor image adjustments.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Sketch, Photoshop, or AdobeXD is an advantage.

In terms of expected supplementary requirements , junior and senior-level web developers should possess the following:

  • Essential understanding of cross-browser compatibility and responsiveness issues and how to resolve them accordingly.
  • Efficient use of code versioning tools such as Git, Mercurial, or SVN.
  • Firm grasp of SEO principles and ensuring that front-end metadata and text will adhere to them.

Illustration of two people with oversized computer interface elements on a yellow background: one placing a cursor icon on a monitor displaying text boxes, the other examining a vertical bar chart, with stylized clouds and foliage as decorative elements.

Front End vs. Back End: What’s the Difference?

Although the primary differences between front-end and back-end web development may seem evident, there are grey areas of distinction.

A few that come to mind are programming-level knowledge, frameworks, and ultimately, their respective roles in a full-stack development department.

In the broadest terms, front-end refers to the client-side of a web application. Essentially the part that you interact with.

However, back-end refers to the server-side and inner-workings that allow for front-end features to function (e.g. user buttons, registration forms, messaging, etc).

As highlighted earlier, the barebones of a front-end project involve design frameworks and markup languages such as HTML and CSS that are purely client-side in nature.

Because of this, engineering departments have established themselves with a large spectrum of job descriptions, anywhere from web design to UI/UX testing & engineering.

Below, I’ve listed a brief overview of the expected job requirements and distinctions between a back-end developer and front-end web developer:

  • Unless they have full-stack experience, back-end developers solely work with server-side implementation . This involves the inner guts and workings of a website, including databases and structures, servers, and user functions that are behind the corresponding UI/UX features.
  • They are typically involved with security , structure , and content management. Although they may have a firm grasp of HTML5 and CSS3, it’s not their prime concentration.
  • Back-end web developers integrate dynamic features into modern websites. This enables them to continually update in real-time based on database changes and new user inputs. Ultimately, this contrasts with a front-end developer deploying static sites.
  • In order to deploy a dynamic back-end architecture, developers will use programming languages such as PHP or .NET for database engineering. Resultantly, they interlink servers with databases ensuring that dynamic updates are made effectively.

Examples of Front-End Job Titles

Below are several discrete examples of front-end job titles and how they interrelate with final front-end products.

  • Web Designing : Perhaps the broadest job description in front-end development. Web designers could be anyone that uses markup and JS frameworks to someone with little to no language experience that uses Photoshop and Fireworks for user-facing design.
  • User Interface (UI) Design : UI design typically involves visual design and sampling to create enjoyable, seamless, and well-structured user experiences. Although they are not consistently involved with programming, they typically possess a light knowledge of HTML and CSS to communicate visions and potential ideas.
  • User Experience (UX) Design : In terms of pure programmatic knowledge and integration of user-facing libraries, UX designers are the mole in the group. UX designers study and research how users use websites.
  • By understanding the psychology and subconscious of users, they can change and test UI accordingly.
  • Front-End Developer : Front-end developers ultimately create sites without any associated back-end development or server-side features. In other words, they design front-feature sites that are primarily static (e.g. sites for restaurants, informational pages, salons, etc).
  • As cited earlier, front-end developers must have a firm grasp on testing and designing with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Top Must-Have Skills for an Experienced Web Developer

Although I’ve cited piles upon piles of critical job description info and key distinctions between the front and back-end development, below I’ve highlighted the top must-have skills to possess in the modern age of the front-end development world:

HTMl5 and CSS3 Markup

HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are the most rudimentary building blocks of web coding and user-facing features.

If a front-end web developer doesn’t possess bare-minimum HTML and CSS knowledge requirements, their title is questionable!

Ultimately, without HTML and CSS, basic layout structures and website structures cannot be developed, resulting in plain white screen and Times New Roman text font.

However, no fear— there is good news! With HTML and CSS alone, companies and entry-level web developers are prepared to create basic static websites with a semi-pleasing user interface.

By layering JavaScript into your web development stack , more depth in functionality is enabled.

At a crude level, JS allows you to control and create maps that update in real-time, interactive films, and online games.

With JavaScript and its associated libraries, you can create updatable websites with responsiveness in mind.

jQuery exists in conjunction with JavaScript as a library. More specifically, it is a broad collection of plugins and extensions that make developing with JS more efficient and seamless.

Rather than starting from the barebones and coding JS from scratch, JQuery allows front-end web developers to add ready-made elements to projects such as countdown timers, search form autocompletes, and automatically-resizing grid layouts.

JavaScript Frameworks

To put it shortly and sweetly, JS frameworks such as AngularJS, Backbone, Ember, and ReactJS provide web development teams with a read-made structure to the entirety of their JS code. This accelerates development while optimizing user responsiveness and UI interactivity.

Front-End Frameworks

CSS and front-end frameworks such as bootstrap can be effectively used as jumping-off points for faster coding, just like JS frameworks do for JS.

A Firm Grasp of CSS Preprocessors

In addition to front-end markup frameworks, preprocessors such as SASS and LESS can speed up CSS coding by optimizing functionality, format, and scalability.

Familiarity With RESTful Services and APIs

REST (Representational State Transfer) is a lightweight architecture that drastically simplifies network communication on the web, while RESTful services and APIs are the web services that communicate with the corresponding REST architecture.

To better visualize a discrete situation with RESTful services and APIs, imagine the following scenario:

You want to develop an app that shows you all your social media friends in the precise order that you became friends.

To accomplish this, a web developer could make calls to Facebook’s RESTful API to read your associated friends list and return that data accordingly.

Additional Skills

In addition to these programmatic web development skills, the following qualifications are just as essential:

  • Responsive and mobile design
  • Cross-browser development
  • Content Management Systems and E-commerce Platform design
  • General testing and debugging
  • Git and version control systems
  • Problem-solving skills

How to Hire a Front-End Web Developer

As companies start filling their design and front-end teams with talented developers, creating a front-end web development team can be challenging and time-consuming.

By looking out for the following UI and JS-focused requirements listed below, you’ll be able to sift through millions of potential candidates and optimize the match for your business-level needs.

  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS.
  • JavaScript basics
  • Cross-browser compatibility
  • Responsive design
  • UI frameworks and CSS-transforming tools
  • 2D and 3D graphics
  • User Accessibility
  • Graphic design and Typography
  • UI/UX design
  • Web template systems
  • Code versioning tools and utilization

To better evaluate potential rising front-end developer candidates for UI and static websites (HTML, CSS, etc), you should gauge their responses to the following interview questions:

  • “What were the most challenging compatibility issues you had to resolve?”
  • “What do you think is the best way to rapidly prototype and develop web applications?”
  • What are the primary goals and motivations for using the latest standards of HTML5, CSS3, and their frameworks?”

At this very second, companies and businesses are flocking to compete in a landscape of creating the very best UI designs and user experiences.

However, with the massive influx of potential web development candidates, startups, and already-established corporations must optimize their teams and sift through the essential qualifications to get the job done.

What is front-end development? Front end vs back end

A process of web-request and response

A process of web-request and response

HTML: the key front-end technology

  • HyperText is the way by which we travel across the web by clicking hyperlinks – specific texts taking you to other pages. Hyper means it’s non-linear, which allows for moving to any other place, as there is no predefined order to do so.
  • Markup determines the qualities that HTML tags apply to the text inside them. Tags mark it as a particular type of text.
  • As a Language , it holds code words and syntax like any other language.

CSS: Styling your facade

  • To communicate with HTML, CSS uses selectors . A selector is the part of CSS code defining which HTML piece the CSS styling will impact.
  • A declaration contains properties and values that are employed by the selector.
  • Properties define font size, color, and margins. Values are the settings for these properties.

  • External style sheets are stored as .css files and can be applied to define the appearance of a whole website via a single file, instead of putting extra instances of CSS code to every HTML element which has to be modified. To use an external style sheet, .html files need to contain a header section that connects to the external style sheet.
  • Internal style sheets are CSS directions put straight into the header of a particular .html page.
  • Inline styles are snippets of CSS recorded into HTML code itself.
  • Full featured (Bootstrap, Foundation, Semantic UI, and more),
  • Aimed at Material Design: (Materialize and Material Design Lite), and
  • Lightweight (Pure).

Most popular CSS frameworks

Most popular CSS frameworks

  • Syntax elements and
  • Backward compatibility with normal CSS files.
  • Sass means Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets. Sass runs on Ruby and is rendered on the server side. Due to its Ruby language origin, the installation is provided via so-called gems (multiple Ruby/Rails libraries).
  • LESS stands for Leaner Style Sheets. It’s a JavaScript library and is rendered on the client side in the browser. Developers choose LESS much more regularly when using JavaScript with style sheets. It resembles composing regular CSS. The technology allows for reusing pieces of CSS within LESS files.

31 Front-End Development Study Topics to Improve Your Code Quality

If you spend a lot of time doing front-end development, you know how big the the world of HTML, CSS and JavaScript are. I came up with this list of topics after chatting with several different front-end developers over the past nine months. Some of the topics also came from my own experiences working as a full-time front-end engineer for the past three years.

The list (written in no particular order) may feel a bit intimidating now, but I am remaining optimistic about being able to continually grow my knowledge about each of these topics and hopefully commit them to memory as I use them in the wild. I actually decided to create this list after feeling a bout of imposter syndrome today at work. Now, I'm feeling excited to continue digging into each topic further!

  • The Document Object Model (DOM) and CSS Object Model (CSSOM)
  • The JavaScript Event Loop, Promises, Asyc/Await
  • CSS position Property
  • CSS Flexbox Layout
  • Common Accessibility Issues to Always Check For
  • Unit & Integration Testing (Jest, Mocha, Chai, Cypress, Axe-Core)
  • Form action and target Attributes
  • JavaScript Design Patterns
  • Closures and Thunks
  • CSS Variables and Preprocessors
  • JavaScript as a Statically Typed Language (TypeScript)
  • Mutable and Immutable Types in JavaScript
  • JavaScript Passed by Reference / Passed by Value
  • JSON Data, JSON-LD, JSON Schemas & UI Schemas
  • HTML Meta Tags (Especially Viewport)
  • Different Ways Pages Zoom and How To Optimize For That
  • Front-End Frameworks (React, Vue, Angular)
  • HTML Templating (Handlebars, EJS)
  • Webpack / Babel
  • Git, Version Control and Rebasing
  • Jenkins, Docker, Continuous Integration
  • CSS Methodologies (i.e. BEM)
  • JavaScript Array Methods: .sort() , .filter() , .map() , .reduce()
  • JavaScript Object Methods: .keys() , .entries() , .values()
  • Front-End Performance Optimization & Speed
  • CSS Specificity and Inheritance
  • State Management (i.e. Redux)
  • Semantic HTML
  • Communicating with RESTful APIs

Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any suggestions for more topics to add to the list. Also, feel free to hit me up on Twitter @Contimporary to follow my journey to become a senior developer!

Getting a job as a web developer requires some skills , but if you do not have a portfolio… how will you showcase those skills to the world?

Below are the top twenty (20) web developer portfolio examples that you can reference when seeking the right inspiration to build or improve your already existing portfolio. Because we know that having a professional portfolio is very important and it can mark the difference, we have selected what we think are the best developer portfolio examples in 2023.

[Updated the 20th of March 2023]

1. Lokkee Studios

Your browser does not support the video tag.

Ideal for responsive one-page portfolios with both horizontal and vertical sliders. It uses the fullPage.js component.

Lokkee is a passionate programming freelancer with top-notch experience in the web app and desktop application development. This includes full front-end design, brand identity, graphics, illustrations, etc.

Lokkee’s web developer portfolio makes great use of fullPage.js JavaScript component to create a beautiful full-screen experience that also serves as a way to prove his front-end skills.

If you are looking to build a portfolio with beautiful visuals and a few texts, you should consider using the fullPage.js fullscreen carousel. It will give your page a modern touch and will for sure be a different portfolio that will catch the viewer’s attention.

2. Lynn Fisher

Lynn Fisher Web Portfolio Portfolio Example

In handy if you have many media and texts to include in your developer portfolio website.

Lynn Fisher is a digital illustrator, web developer, and UI/UX designer. Her portfolio changes yearly, which is a major feature that piqued our interest. All previous iterations are available on her “archive page.”

Her web dev portfolio includes “cliffhangers” to her past web work and art projects. She’s done it irresistibly that almost every visitor would want to engage these buttons to view. She also allows her visitors to choose between the light or dark theme , which is also worth considering.

If you want to start building your own portfolio you should check out the best portfolio web builders . Ideal to show off your no-code skills or to set up something beautiful and fast in no time.

3. Jack Jeznach

Jack Jeznach Web Portfolio Portfolio Example

Recommended for developers with mastery of animation .

Jack is a WordPress expert and front-end developer with about 10 years of experience. How did we know all of these? Via his portfolio!

Jack’s portfolio is exhaustive informative , letting his visitors know everything and anything that needs to be known, especially about his skills and how he infuses them into helping clients smash their goals. This web dev portfolio has a blog page containing tech articles.

Jack explores seamless animation, with color combinations that work just perfectly – you would love it at first sight!

4. Cory Hughart

Cory Hughart Web Portfolio Example

Recommended if you want to create a simple yet modern portfolio .

Fifth on our list of web developer portfolio examples is Cory’s website. The simple yet eye-catchy design and brilliant choice of words employed for this portfolio make it an excellent example to draw inspiration when creating your portfolio.

Cory has a unique heading created with a pixel design image. The website has a modern look, thanks to the background animation of an orbiting planetoid representing outer space Cory has included in the portfolio’s design.

Cory’s intro copy is excellent: although relatively short, the use of simple but memorable words encourages visitors to continue scrolling down the page.

5. Bruno Simon

Bruno Web Portfolio Example

Ideal for web developers who fancy 3D animation and want to amuse their visitors .

Bruno’s portfolio is the perfect description of aesthetics. His developer portfolio website is very interactive: a 3D setting where visitors can navigate with a jeep to various sections of the website. Bruno implements an excellent mastery of 3D animation to create a brilliant navigation system for his web dev portfolio, helping his visitors have a great user experience.

However, while the idea may seem perfect, it may be somewhat tiring and distracting. It may also be relatively difficult for potential clients who aren’t really “oriented” to navigate the portfolio quickly. Nonetheless, if you fancy interaction and want to amuse your visitors, then you can draw inspiration for your developer portfolio web from this design.

6. Dries Van Broeck

Dries Van Broeck Portfolio Example

Recommended for web developers who have lots of text to include in their website.

Dries Van Broeck is a motion designer. And this reflects in his web dev portfolio’s design. Dries’ website is carefully designed, highlighting all important details, including the bright prompt text highlighting the author’s bio, the carousel, the small animated icons, etc.

Dries undoubtedly displays an expert level of design and development skills with his portfolio. His portfolio stood out for us because of the dynamic interactive effects it has on visitors, thanks to his appropriate use of animation and colors.

7. Gift Egwuenu

Gift Egwuenu Portfolio Example

Gift is a Netherlands-based front-end developer and content creator. Although simple , with straight-to-the-point details, Gift has also made her developer portfolio website beautiful and elegant .

Although seemingly abstract, the website offers a deep sense of mystery that somehow grabs the attention of a typical web user, encouraging them to continue scrolling down.

12. Chase Ohlson

Chase Ohlson - Developer Portfolio Example

Perfect for web developers who want a basic simple portfolio .

Chase’s developer has a single purpose and that is to describe himself and his work.

He didn’t complicate himself. There are no crazy animations, transitions, or designs. He uses a basic layout to describe himself, his work, and his skills.

If you are looking for something simple and functional, you can take Chase’s portfolio as your example to follow.

13. Wassim Chegham

Wassim Chegham - Developer Portfolio Example

Wassim kept it very basic but his page still looks good and clean.

The only color you’ll see on his page is his own avatar. The rest uses a plain grey background with black or grey text.

He keeps everything pretty minimal and makes sure the visitor focuses more on the content than on the visuals.

14. Lounge Lizard

Lounge Lizard Developer Portfolio Example

Recommend establishing your brand identity as fast as possible.

Toy Flight’s web developer portfolio example is recommended for web developers who want a simple yet artistic portfolio.

Stereo Developer Portfolio Example

Useful for web developers with a lot of content to fill their portfolios.

Stereo has plenty of information, but would hardly bore any visitor thanks to the colorful yet straightforward themed images and videos embedded in the portfolio website. This portfolio focuses on deepening the emotional relationship consumers have with the brand. Web developers with a lot of content to fill their portfolios would find this portfolio useful for inspiration.

Brad Frost - Web Developer Portfolio Example

Portfolio example of a well known web developer .

Brad Frost is a very well-known web developer and his portfolio is a great example of how to keep things simple and concise.

On the landing page, he uses a simple paragraph to describe himself and then has a small menu with the basic sections of the site. Blog, contact, music, and hiring.

Because he’s the author of a book Atomic Design , he displays it on the landing page as one of his main achievements.

His contact page is very complete and contains links to the main social networks , some developer-specific ones such as Github, and Codepen, and some generic ones like Spotify, Youtube, or Last.fm.

19. Tim Smith

Tim Smith Developer Portfolio Example

For web developers with numerous projects to showcase .

20. Shane Mielke

Shane Mielke Developer Portfolio Example

Ideal for web developers with plenty of projects to include in their portfolios.

Shane’s portfolio is a slickly designed website featuring an interchangeably black and white solid background plus a carefully chosen card-themed presentation of his previous project that creates an attention-arresting effect on visitors. Hovering over these cards causes them to somersault, showing the project’s name in the process. This effect is entertaining, making users even more interested in scrolling further down the page.

21. Eric Van Holtz

Eric Van Holtz Developer Portfolio Example

For web developers with many projects .

Like Shane’s, Eric’s web developer portfolio website is a good source of inspiration for developers with loads of projects to include in their portfolios.

However, Eric has animation effects in his portfolio’s design . The homepage features a distinctive fusion of massive, bold font on a solid purple background. These effects combine to make the website as visually appealing as possible, luring visitors even deeper into other sections of the website.

front end developer presentation

Example of a portfolio with clever animations and transitions .

Oriol Cervantes is a Barcelona-based Front End Developer and his portfolio makes it clear.

His portfolio displays a beautiful taste for design and he smartly combines animations and colors to create a truly unique portfolio. Oriol is brave with the use of colors and is not afraid of using many.

It uses the fullPage.js component to achieve the stunning fullscreen scrolling effect that, in combination with the other animations, it gives the page a new touch.

He shows his skills in two categories and separates “full-stack development” and “design”.

To showcase his work, he uses a different section per job and uses a horizontal slider to show us pictures of the final products.

Web Developer Portfolio of Sara Soueidan

Example of an accessible portfolio of a well-known web developer.

Sara is another great web developer who has collaborated with companies like Netflix, Codrops, Smashing Magazine, and ESLint.

She’s also very popular on Twitter and has spoken at plenty of events for web developers , postcasts and interviews .

Her website is nothing out of the ordinary but it does one thing pretty well: it’s straight to the point and easy to navigate.

As a web developer focused on accessibility , Sara’s website knows that the most important thing about a website is being able to communicate the message to everybody in the best and simple’s way possible.

The page contains exactly what you would expect from a well-known developer. The compulsory “about page”, a blog, a hire me section, a speaking page with future and previous events, and links to her social networks, podcasts, and interviews.

It’s also interesting to find a section dedicated to “endorsements” that contains quotes of people talking about her. Quite a nice idea to sell yourself!

Front-End Developer Portfolio - Michael Kolesidis

Example of a brave portfolio using brutalism style.

If you are looking for “different”, then Michael’s portfolio is a great example of what “different” looks like.

His website design is probably considered “brutalism” , although he calls it himself “frivobrutalism” . A design that is not afraid of expressing itself in a totally unconventional manner. It’s a great technique to shock visitors and create a deeper mark in them.

He uses plenty of colors, large fonts, text shadows, filters, and “old” animations to create a such unique style. He also chooses to use very informal language as part of his identity brand.

Apart from this, his portfolio contains a collection of works as the main element, an about me section, a contact page, a list of awards, and something a bit less common: an “about this website” section.

You can access the source code of the website and download it from his Github repository .

Dvlpr - A Front-End Developer Portfolio

Simple yet beautiful full-screen portfolio .

Todo is a front-end web developer and he created a website to show off his development and design skills.

His full-page navigation and taste for design make his website stand out from the rest. He’s telling the visitor that he knows what he’s doing and that he knows how to create beautiful websites.

The page follows a one-page design that visitors can navigate by scrolling up and down.

Developer Portfolio Example - Carl Beaverson

For those looking for a minimalist portfolio .

If minimalism is your thing, Carl’s portfolio won’t disappoint you. Carl is an Australian web developer

It’s not so common to find portfolios like this one among web developers. At fist glance, you might think it’s a designer’s portfolio or even a photographer’s! But nope! It’s an elegant and beautiful portfolio displaying the final products of his work as a web developer.

The design couldn’t be more simple. A picture per project containing a link to the final website.

Web Developer Portfolio Example - Matthew Robinson

Example for those who want to impress visitors and provide detailed information.

Simon is a senior front-end engineer and his portfolio showcases his skills in a great way.

The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s full of animations. From the top menu to the backgrounds or even the way to navigate the page horizontally.

His website drives you to his work through beautiful experiences becoming its own example of what Simon is capable of.

Each of the projects on the page is explained with a great amount of detail, including system architecture graphics, videos, and pictures. This is a great way of showcasing your work and showing off your skills and knowledge on the topic.

To have a good portfolio as a web developer you should try to include the following information:

About Me Every portfolio should include a page or section that talks about who you are. Here you can include your professional description, the name of companies or projects you’ve worked and hobbies or passions. Try to use natural language without sounding too formal. Tech people like informal and fun stuff.

Projects There’s no better way to show what you are capable of than naming your biggest achievements. These can be projects on previous jobs, side hustles, or a combination of both. Add here whatever you’ve done that serves as a way to show your skills as a web developer.

Contact Page A portfolio is not a portfolio unless you have a contact page. It doesn’t have to be a contact form. It can be just sharing your email or adding links to your social networks. What’s important is that you provide an easy way for people to contact you.

Technologies Make sure to add the technologies you’ve worked in or the ones you have experience in. Languages, frameworks, CMSs, management tools, etc. Anything that can help people identify if you are a good fit for their company or their projects.

Link to Github If you have an active Github account (which you should do), make sure to add a link to it somewhere visible on your page. You know what Linus Torvalds said: “Talk is cheap, show me the code!” Make sure you have things on Github that showcase your skills with certain technologies. They are your best CV.

Relevant Links Your portfolio as a web developer is more important than your CV. Take the chance to add anything that you think can be relevant for others to get to know your skills.

Add links to youtube tutorials you’ve done, events where you’ve been a speaker, scientific papers where you’ve contributed, important pull requests on open-sourced projects, online interviews, podcasts where you’ve participated, etc. This is your exposition. Own it.

Hobbies Don’t be afraid of adding a touch of personality to your portfolio. After all, we are all humans and we want to work with other human beings. If you have any hobbies feel free to share them. If you like photography, share your pictures. If you like soccer or basketball and you’ve won some competitions, add it too.

Accomplishments If you’ve done anything that can be considered extraordinary, share it. Awards of any kind, popular repositories, side hustles that went viral or turned into small products or services, books you’ve written, your GitHub contributions, courses you’ve taken, etc.

Blog If you can find the time to write a bit every month, this will enhance your portfolio quite a lot. Create posts about web development sharing your discoveries and struggles. The more you share the more they’ll see you as an expert on the topic and the better you’ll learn things.

Social Networks Aside from Github, if you are active in any other social network like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or Youtube, feel free to share your links so they can get to know you better.
