How To Write A Great Restaurant Review: Good & Bad Review Examples

Vera Leng

Vera is a Senior Content Writer at a Singaporean lifestyle publication, ConfirmGood where she covers stories on all things food, lifestyle, and perspectives.

Throughout my career as a content writer at various lifestyle publications in Singapore , many a time have I been tasked to write a review for a restaurant .

A review of a restaurant is incredibly important to the business. Given that 94% of diners refer to reviews before making a decision to eat somewhere, the power reviews have to sway the consumer’s decision is immense.

Having been in this profession for a while now, I can safely say that I’ve seen my fair share of good and bad examples of restaurant reviews. And boy, do I have something to say!

But before I go into the details, let’s start with the basics. How should you structure your restaurant review article?

Restaurant review format

1) lay the table.

Just as how you’d set up the table in preparation for every meal, you need to set up your article in preparation for your readers’ eyes.

Provide some background information about the restaurant, its owner(s), and what it specializes in. Check out the opening paragraph of our Carne Burgers Singapore Review :

The introduction of a restaurant review of carne burgers singapore.

The reader is immediately hit with some key facts that establishes the restaurant as a reputable business. If a sustainability-focused restaurant run by a Michelin star chef doesn’t entice you, I don’t know what does.

A well-written introduction is essential as a hook to capture your reader’s attention right from the being and keep them engaged til the end of your review.

2) Start serving your mains

Now that you’ve invited your readers to the table, it’s time to show them what the restaurant has to offer.

A majority of the body of your restaurant review should showcase the best dishes the establishment has to offer. Check out what we showcased in our Seoul Garden a la carte menu review .

We featured the best dishes in our seoul garden restaurant review.

As a buffet restaurant, Seoul Garden has a wide selection of cooked and uncooked food items on its menu. But we only featured the most popular and best-looking items. And these are the Wagyu Picanha and Salmon slices.

You should always feature the best items that the owner wants to feature and take good pictures of them ot feature in your restaurant review. The first impression always counts 👀

Some things that should be in in this part of your review include what the dishes are, why you ordered them, and what makes them great. Describe the sight , smell , flavours , and texture of the dishes you’re reviewing. You’ll be surprised by how effective these descriptive paragraphs can be in selling the restaurant.

Example of how you describe food in a restaurant review.

Quick tip 💡 Prepare an arsenal of words you can use to describe food so you can easily pull them out to use in your article.

3) Wrapping things up

End off by summarizing why you enjoyed (or did not enjoy) the food. I’d strongly recommend adding some quirky final thoughts to leave your readers with a cute aftertaste.

Tips on writing great restaurant reviews

1) learn from the best restaurant review sites.

As with learning any new skill, look at what others have already done.

A great source of restaurant reviews are lifestyle publications. They are generally divided into different sections like travel, finance, and food. ConfirmGood’s food blog showcases some of the best places to it in Singapore.

Check out the various articles we’ve put out to learn how to write great restaurant reviews. Learn the vocabulary, structure, and writing style.

2) Look at Tripadvisor and Google restaurant reviews

This one may come as a surprise to some of you. Why would you want to refer to reviews left behind by random people? After all, these aren’t professional food writers . What’s there to learn from?

If you take a look at the list of reviews you see on such sites, you’ll notice that some of these reviews are exceptionally well written. You can pick up pretty useful vocabulary from them. I guess some people really take writing reviews on Google really seriously đŸ€Ł

A tripadvisor restaurant review example.

Another reason why you should look at restaurant reviews is because you get to learn about what is important to a customer. Perhaps being led to the table properly is important to some. To others, it’s really just the quality of the food. See what pops up most often and take note of it.

If a restaurant hires you to write a review about them, you should include these factors in your article when promoting the business.

3) Take the best photos

A photo of carne burger used in our restaurant review article.

Taking great pictures of the food you are reviewing is absolutely necessary. Words alone cannot do the job of convincing your readers to eat at a particular restaurant.

Humans are visual creatures and well-taken shots of the restaurants’ best dishes can help sway your readers’ decision.

4) STOP USING “DELICIOUS”, “GREAT”, “GOOD”

Expand your food vocabulary.

If you want to write great restaurant reviews, you can’t describe that flaky pastry that oozes creamy custard fulling as delicious.

You aren’t doing the melt-in-your-mouth tender steak any justice by calling it amazing.

So just stop ❌

Again, refer to the article I listed above for some good examples of words and phrases you can use to describe food.

5) Include the restaurant’s story

A restaurant is more than its menu.

It’s also about its history, its owners’ histories, culture, and even purpose.

Establishing the restaurant’s story in the introduction of your review can help pique your readers’ interest in the place.

6) Pay attention to cultural nuances

To add to my previous point, you should always be mindful when writing about food.

Do not refer to dishes as ‘ethnic’, ‘exotic’, or worse, ‘oriental’.

Food carries with them the long history of struggle and achievements of the culture which they are from. You need to be respectful of that.

7) It’s ok to not like the food

You don’t have to lie when writing restaurant reviews.

This may even cause the restaurant to receive harsher negative reviews as they were overhyped by your article. So don’t be afraid to be honest about how you find their food. Just don’t trash them unnecessarily.

You’re all set to start writing an awesome restaurant review !

Those are my top 7 restaurant review writing tips. I hope you’ve found them useful. Becoming a food writer is not going to be easy. But this article is a great start for you!

500 words Long Essay on Restaurant Review for Kids of Class 3 to Class 9

When people are looking to try some new restaurant, they start looking for online reviews. Reviews are by far the best way to judge whether you should or shouldn’t try a restaurant. Today’s essay is a review of a Papua restaurant.

Papua restaurant is situated in the heart of a small town in Makuta Province, Peru. It is perched on top of mara hill. It’s a favorite hangout place for couples, families, and sportsmen. The atmosphere is welcoming and admirable. Out of all the different restaurants I visited in Peru, this one had the most beautiful climate and eye-catching scenery. When you enter you get aw-stuck by the amazing interior and beautiful environment. You start to feel all cozy and comfortable when you sit and look around.

The restaurant offers its customers a wide range of entertainment options. These include live bands, plays, clubbing, camping, etc. All these facilities enable the customers to explore the countryside. They do also offer accommodation services with a wide array of choices for couples, singles, and families. Their accommodation rooms are well-designed and provide a magnificent view of Mara hill.

Now we come to the most important section, which is none other than the food section. The restaurant offers a wide variety of delicious food items including fried rice, steak, different cuisines, Chinese & Italian food along with mouth-watering dessert and chicken dishes. The owner himself instructed the waiters to attend to each customer for the best quality.

They also had a small snack bar that I loved. From the snack bar, I ate Ceviche, one of the most popular snacks in Peru. It was chilly, sour, and lively at the same time. I never tried raw fish before that and was skeptical at first but when I finally tried it, it blew my mind away. I would love to try it again, even a million times more. Based on my experience of the food I tried in this restaurant, how it tasted, and how well it was presented I would recommend it to all of you reading my review.

Let’s now talk about the room service. It was also good but not great, it wasn’t great because the rooms were less clean and untidy. Whenever I ordered food it arrived late because the room service was not quick enough. Other than that, they came every time I prompted. They were really friendly, skilled, and dedicated individuals. Despite all that, they still need to work on the tidiness of the rooms and the time they take to deliver the food.

The pros and cons of the Restaurant:

Overall it was a great experience. If I were to score it on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 9 or else a 4.5-star review.

The Pros of this Hotel

The atmosphere, the taste of food, outside view, meals, dining experience, and price of food were all amazing. In addition to this, the accommodation services offered by the restaurant at those prices were a blessing.

The Cons of this Hotel

As I also mentioned above, based on my experience, the restaurant had one downside and it was the room service. Other than that I was completely satisfied with all other services offered.

My Recommendation

Concisely, Papua restaurants deliver the best dining experience with exquisite flavors. I highly recommend going there and to experience it yourself. I am hopeful that everyone will enjoy all they offer and not just the food. I would love to visit again if I ever get a chance to travel to Peru.

Short 150-200 Words Restaurant Review Essay in English for Children and Kids from Primary and High School

I am writing a review of the beautiful Papua restaurant I recently visited during my time in Peru. This hotel is situated in the heart of a small town in Makuta Province, Peru. It is constructed on top of the elegant Mara hill.

When you enter the hotel you get awe-stuck by the delightful merge of antique art and modern designs. The designs and architecture coupled with elegant lighting leave you all cozy and relaxed. From the top of the mountains where the lounge is pegged, there was a breathtaking view of the slopes and the short waterfall.

Related: How to write an Essay in MLA Format

Adjacent to a winding road downhill there are the rolling plains that add to its beauty. They offer live bands, clubbing, camping, and accommodation services. During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing their accommodation, clubbing, and food services.

The restaurant’s menu was mouth-watering with a plethora of options. Most meals were prepared from fresh, healthy organic ingredients found in abundance within the restaurant vicinity. Some of their recipes featured local flavors which you should surely try out, they were rare and delicious delicacies.

The accommodation was also very neat and tidy with room service always standing by for anything we needed. On top of that, the breathtaking view I had from my room was something I will never forget.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is thinking about visiting Peru. The quality of food, the location, family atmosphere, and accommodation services were all up to the mark. It’s also a great couple and family space. Based on my experience, I would give it a 5-star review and would love to visit again if I ever can.

Pearl of the Orient – Penang

Penang is one of the most fascinating states which I had the opportunity to visit during the last school holidays. It was my fifth visit to Penang, yet there were still so many things to do and places to visit. And of course, a variety of mouth-watering food to eat.

Places to visit in Penang

In Penang, there are many touristy places like Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, and Gurney Drive. The most enjoyable place I visited on this trip was the Made In Penang Interactive Museum located at Weld Quay, Georgetown.

Made in Penang Interactive Museum displays interesting 3D artwork. For example, there is a picture of a huge 3D snake slithering out from the frame of the Snake Temple picture. This unconventional and impressive museum allows visitors to touch and get close to the artwork. My family and I had great fun taking pictures here.

Recommended places in Penang

Another beautiful place that I highly recommend visiting is the Batu Ferringhi Beach which is about 11 kilometres from the city centre. It is a popular destination for local and foreign tourists alike.

My family and I will head to the beach every time we are in Penang. If you love water sport activities, like jet skiing and parasailing, this is the best place for you.

Essay conclusion

To end, Penang is a wonderful place to spend your holidays. If you are planning for a holiday, do include Penang in your list. You will undoubtedly enjoy your time spent there.

How To Write A Book Review Essay For SPM

books

What Is A Book Review?

A book review is a short analysis or critical evaluation of a book. Simply put, a book review is what you think about a book which means the essay is opinion-based.

You might find a book review essay question in Part 3 of your SPM Paper 2, where you’re expected to write around 200 - 250 words. In this article, we’ve outlined several easy steps that you can take to help you write an SPM book review essay. You’ll also find an example of a book review essay at the end, so don’t miss out on that!

Step-By-Step Guide To Write A Book Review Essay For SPM

Step 1: read the question carefully.

The first thing to do is to read the essay question carefully so you are clear on what you must include in your SPM book review essay. Pay attention to any keywords in the question. For example, some questions may ask you to share a synopsis of the book or who you think should read the book.

You should also take note of who you’re writing for. Are you writing a book review for the school magazine, the local newspaper or an online blog? This will help you tailor your book review for the audience.

Step 2: Identify your book

books

For an SPM book review essay, you usually get to choose what book you would like to write about. Book lovers and avid readers would probably have many options in mind. If you’re not into reading (it’s not too late to start a new habit!), you can write about a book that you’re well-versed or familiar with.

Many great book series like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games have also turned into movies. So if you’ve seen the movie but haven’t read the book, you technically will have enough content to write a book review.

There are some basic elements that you should include in your SPM book review essay. To help you outline your essay and brainstorm for ideas, here are some WH questions that you can use as prompts.

What is the title?

Who is the author?

What happens in the book?

Who are the characters?

Where and when does the story take place?

Why did you like or dislike the book?

Why is it worth or not worth reading?

Who would you recommend the book to?

How did the book make you feel?

What did you learn from the book?

Step 4: Write the introduction

In the introduction paragraph of your SPM book review essay, you must first introduce the title and author of the book. Here are several different ways that you could begin your essay:

I have recently read the novel

The book I am reviewing is titled
 by

My favourite book is

One of the novels that I enjoy reading is

 is a novel written by

The author of the
 book series is

You can also mention the genre of the book in your introduction. Is it fiction or non-fiction? Is it a sci-fi, thriller, fantasy or romance novel? Remember, your introduction paragraph doesn’t need to be long; 2-3 sentences would be just right.

Step 5: Write your body paragraphs

white paper

Your SPM book review essay should have 2-3 body paragraphs. Each paragraph can focus on a different point or element to keep it well organised.

When writing your body paragraphs, remember to refer to the essay question so that you address all of the required points in your essay. You can also select the WH questions that are the most relevant for you to respond to in your essay.

If you’re struggling to expand on your points, use the PEEC acronym. PEEC stands for:

P oint (What are you trying to convey?)

E xplanation (How can you explain it further?)

E xample (What are some examples you can include to support your point?)

C onclusion (So what?)

Step 6: Write your conclusion

In your conclusion, you can provide your recommendations for the book or reaffirm how you feel about the book. It’s okay to give a negative review, but this should be consistent with what you’ve shared in your body paragraphs.

Here are some examples of sentences or expressions that you could use in your SPM book review essay’s conclusion.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery novels.

I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to others.

The book is available in the school library, so do check it out.

This book is best suited for fans of fantasy novels such as Lord of the Rings.

As a fan of fantasy and adventure novels, I would give it a read but don’t expect it to be as good as the Harry Potter series.

While the characters are interesting, I believe this book is not for everyone.

Step 7: Proofread your essay

This step is something that you’d find in all of our essay guides because it is an important step when writing any kind of essay.

Proofread means checking your essays for any mistakes and areas for improvement once you’ve finished writing. Always remember to leave some time for you to proofread at the end!

‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ written by author John Boyne is a moving story set during the Holocaust. This historical fiction novel was also adapted into a movie of the same name.

The main characters in the book are Bruno, the son of a Nazi official and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held in a concentration camp. When Bruno first saw the camp, the prisoners' uniforms looked like ‘striped pyjamas’ to him. While exploring the fence surrounding the camp, Bruno meets Shmuel on the other side of the fence and the two strike up an unlikely friendship.

Once I started reading, it was very difficult to put it down as the story hooked me. I like how the story focused on the perspectives of children and highlights their innocence. The story also emphasises how friendship knows no boundaries. While the book started quite light at the beginning, it is heart-wrenching by the time it ends. I enjoy books with cautionary tales like this as it contains a lot of moral lessons.

If you’re worried about the language, don’t be. The book is written in simple English which made it very easy to understand. I didn’t find myself needing to look up many words in the dictionary. ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ is also not too long, so you can easily finish reading it within a week.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book as it tells a story with deep meanings that anyone can reflect on and learn something about.

The 8 Best Restaurants in Moscow

From the traditional to the modern, fine dining destinations in Moscow celebrate the best that Russian cuisine has to offer.

By Elite Traveler

With many of the best restaurants in Moscow also doubling as bars and clubs, the atmosphere is nearly always one step away from a party, and many of the city’s elite come dressed to impress. Of course, there are still many elegant and family friendly restaurants for those who prefer a quieter evening. With such a large selection available, Elite Traveler has compiled a suitable list for diners of all persuasions.

Café Pushkin

Designed to recreate the feel of a 19th century aristocrat’s house, CafĂ© Pushkin has become one of the most popular restaurants in Moscow, thanks to the quality of its food, impeccable service and the excellent vodka selection. The atmosphere of pre-Revolution Russia is delightfully charming, from the flowery script of the menu to aristocratic country house dĂ©cor. Pushkin is the ideal destination if you want to be treated like Russian nobility and dine like a Tsar – but book ahead, the restaurant’s popularity requires reservation well in advance.

cafe-pushkin.ru

Lavishly decked out with chandeliers and hand-painted furniture, the menu selection may come as a surprise to first-time guests, with options ranging from Pi Pa duck with melon and truffle to beefsteak with foie gras. Turandot puts a French spin on pan-Asian cuisine, and does so with incredible style and boldness. Whilst the interior décor is certainly to be marvelled at, it is the thoughtfully conceptualized and perfectly executed menu options that make for an incredible dining experience.

The company has a reputation for the high quality of its restaurants that grace the streets of the capital, and Buono is no exception. The views from Buono are unashamedly spectacular, while the dĂ©cor is elegant, with soft creams complementing the fine views on offer. The food is classical Italian; Chef William Lamberti is well known throughout Europe and has created an excellent menu. Italian for ‘small’, Piccolino is a cozy, homely restaurant – something of a rarity in Moscow.

Serving typical Italian food, the family friendly establishment is laid back, but this doesn’t compromise the quality of the food: good, hearty portions that are exceptionally tasty. The interior of Piccolino has been designed to replicate that of a large country house, and the dĂ©cor is entirely fitting with the atmosphere of the restaurant. In a city where many of the establishments value the names of their guests over the quality of their dishes, Piccolino is the place to come if your preference is quality of food rather than famous faces.

Twin Gardens

With two tasting menus and an Ă  la carte option, the Twin Gardens at the heart of Moscow caters to any palette. With the restaurant concept based on the symbiosis of science and nature, their Vegetables set menu explores all manner of produce from seedling to peeling, delicately plated in a tasteful homage to the natural life cycle of wild plants and flowers. For more adventurous types, their Rediscover Russia menu offers a culinary tour of various local specialties found in provinces across the vast continent. They also have a wide selection of Russian wines.

OAK HALL, CDL

Located in an elegant 19th century mansion, CDL is one of the most sophisticated restaurants in Moscow.

The interior has been gorgeously designed to recreate the grandeur of the Silver Age of Russian culture, with antique balustrades and bas-reliefs throughout the Oak Hall main room. The staircase in the Oak Hall is a particular masterpiece; it was built without a single nail or screw. The fireplace is equally impressive and has been used as a meeting room by President Dmitry Medvedev. Guests can also hire additional rooms such as the Cigar Room and the Cabinet Room. A menu of authentic Russian cuisine has been created by top chef Alexander Popov, with organic dishes bursting with flavor and a splendor to match the opulent surroundings. With so much luxury and class on display, it’s little wonder that former US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush have chosen to dine here. Situated in the center of the city between Bolshaya Nikitskaya 53 and Povarskaya Ulitsa 50, it’s worth booking ahead to avoid disappointment.

White Rabbit

With a domed window inviting soaring views of the Moscow cityscape, White Rabbit has recently undergone extensive renovations, to both its interior and its menu. Renowned architect Natalia Belonogova has transformed the restaurant into an airy, modern space, perfected by the addition of a summer veranda. To connect the dining options with the new interior, head chef Vladimir Mukhin has created a new menu, Metamorphoses, to reflect the lifecycle of the mayfly butterfly.

Delight your palette with scallop, strawberries and blackcurrant or, for dessert, dandelion honey with melted cottage cheese. This summerlike and refreshing menu has its roots in Russian soil and its head in the clouds above Moscow’s skyline.

Located on the 12th floor of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, the restaurant has spectacular panoramic views over Red Square and The Kremlin. A good business plan for a fruit and vegetable market must cater to the unique aspects of this type of retail business.

Initially, it's crucial to provide a comprehensive overview of the market landscape. This includes up-to-date statistics and an exploration of emerging trends within the industry, similar to what we've incorporated in our fruit and vegetable market business plan template .

Your business plan should articulate your vision clearly. Define your target demographic (such as local residents, restaurants, or health-conscious consumers) and establish your market's distinctive features (like offering organic produce, exotic fruits, or locally-sourced vegetables).

Market analysis is the next critical component. This requires a thorough examination of local competitors, market dynamics, and consumer buying patterns.

For a fruit and vegetable market, it's imperative to detail the range of products you intend to sell. Describe your selection of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and any additional items you plan to offer, and discuss how these choices align with the preferences and needs of your customer base.

The operational plan is equally important. It should outline the location of your market, the layout of the retail space, your supply chain for fresh produce, and inventory management practices.

Given the nature of a fruit and vegetable market, it is vital to highlight the freshness and quality of your produce, your relationships with growers and suppliers, and adherence to health and safety standards.

Then, delve into your marketing and sales strategies. How do you plan to attract and keep customers coming back? Consider your approach to promotions, customer loyalty programs, and potential value-added services (like home delivery or a juice bar).

Incorporating digital strategies, such as an online ordering system or a robust social media presence, is also crucial in the modern marketplace.

The financial section is another cornerstone of your business plan. It should encompass the initial investment, projected sales, operating expenses, and the point at which you expect to break even.

With a fruit and vegetable market, managing waste and understanding the shelf life of products are critical, so precise planning and knowledge of your financials are essential. For assistance, consider using our financial forecast for a fruit and vegetable market .

Compared to other business plans, a fruit and vegetable market plan must pay closer attention to the perishability of inventory, the importance of a robust supply chain, and the potential for seasonal fluctuations.

Lenders and investors are keen on a solid market analysis, realistic financial projections, and a comprehensive understanding of the day-to-day operations of a fruit and vegetable market.

Market Opportunity

Market data and figures.

The fruit and vegetable market is an essential and robust component of the global food industry.

Recent estimates value the global fruit and vegetable trade at over 1 trillion dollars, with expectations for continued growth as consumers seek healthier eating options. In the United States, the fruit and vegetable industry contributes significantly to the economy, with thousands of markets and stores providing a wide range of produce to meet consumer demand.

These statistics underscore the critical role that fruit and vegetable markets play in not only providing nutritious food options but also in supporting local agriculture and economies.

Current trends in the fruit and vegetable industry indicate a shift towards organic and locally sourced produce, as consumers become more health-conscious and environmentally aware.

There is an increasing demand for organic fruits and vegetables, driven by the perception of better quality and concerns about pesticides and other chemicals. The local food movement is also gaining momentum, with consumers showing a preference for produce that is grown locally to support community farmers and reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation.

Technological advancements are influencing the industry as well, with innovations in vertical farming and hydroponics allowing for more sustainable and space-efficient growing methods.

Online grocery shopping and delivery services are expanding, making it easier for consumers to access fresh produce directly from their homes.

Additionally, the push for transparency in food sourcing continues to grow, with consumers wanting to know more about where their food comes from and how it is grown.

These trends are shaping the future of the fruit and vegetable market, as businesses strive to meet the evolving preferences and values of modern consumers.

All these elements are available in our business plan template for a fruit and vegetable market and our financial plan for a fruit and vegetable market .

Our revenue assumptions are based on an in-depth analysis of the local market demand for fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables, taking into account the increasing trend towards healthy eating and organic produce.

We expect sales to grow steadily as we establish our market's reputation for offering a wide variety of fresh and locally sourced produce.

The break-even analysis will determine the volume of sales we need to achieve to cover all our costs and begin generating a profit, marking the point at which our market becomes financially sustainable.

Key performance indicators we will monitor include the turnover rate of our inventory, the gross margin on produce sales, the current ratio to evaluate our ability to meet short-term obligations, and the return on investment to gauge the profitability of the capital invested in our market.

How People Are Using Restaurant Reviews To Spread News In Russia

Person seriously reading computer

When you look up restaurant reviews, it's usually because you want to know if the food is good. For some people living in Russia, on the other hand, it recently became a bit more complicated. CNET reports that Google Reviews for restaurants located in Moscow and St. Petersburg are now being saturated with information about the situation in Ukraine . Using Google Reviews as social media may seem strange, but the outlet says it's one of the only ways to share information without any media bias or possible censorship from the Russian government.

As TIME explains, the majority of Russia's television networks and news outlets are owned by the federal government, which means almost every headline and news story is perpetuating what President Vladimir Putin wants his citizens to believe. Most Russian media in fact only refers to the war as a "military operation," claiming that no Ukrainian civilians are in danger because only military targets are being attacked.

As for what's actually happening in Ukraine, Russian citizens are left in the dark as journalists are forced to censor themselves or else they jeopardize their lives and jobs. But while most media reports in the country cannot be trusted, anonymous restaurant reviews apparently can.

What are people writing in the restaurant reviews?

Not only does the Russian government control the news, it also controls what can be posted on social media. This led Reface, a smartphone app based in Ukraine, to hide news about the invasion in a push notification, VICE reports. Though Reface is nothing but a face-swapping app, its notification was able to bypass Russia's censorship — something Facebook and Twitter were unable to do. When clicked, the notification shared details and pictures Russian citizens couldn't access through other avenues.

Though Reface's notification was only sent to users who have downloaded the app, Google Reviews are public. Ukrainians and others located outside of Russia who can freely post to the platform are therefore sharing as much information as they can without being flagged for spam. A  Twitter user who identifies as part of the group Anonymous reminded people to leave five-star reviews in order to avoid interfering with business, sharing an example review which translates to, "The food was great! Unfortunately, Putin spoiled our appetites by invading Ukraine." In addition to the reviews, other self-declared members of Anonymous are attempting to hack Russian websites, looking for information and other ways to support Ukraine (via  CNBC ).

Other reviews, such as the ones posted under Moscow's Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago, are more direct, warning that the government is lying and Ukrainian civilians are dying every day. CNET shared screenshots of the reviews, however it appears many have already been taken down.

Russia Presses Attacks in Northeast Ukraine, Seeking Buffer Zone on Border

Advances by Russian forces have raised fears that they could bring their artillery in range of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

A blue minibus parked on a street under a smoke-darkened sky.

By Constant MĂ©heut

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

Russian forces continued to press a grinding advance on Saturday into northeastern Ukraine, moving closer to a village about 10 miles from the outer ring of Kharkiv and raising fears that the city, Ukraine’s second largest, could soon be within range of Russian artillery.

The Ukrainian Army said on Saturday that Russian troops had tried to break through its defenses near the village of Lyptsi, which lies directly north of Kharkiv. It said the attacks had been repelled, but maps of the battlefield compiled by independent groups analyzing publicly available video of the fighting showed that Russian troops had almost reached the outskirts of the village.

Ukraine’s Khartia Brigade, which is defending Lyptsi, posted a video on Telegram on Friday afternoon that it said showed Russian soldiers advancing on the village on foot, and attacking in small groups between tree lines. The brigade said it had targeted the Russians with rockets, forcing them to withdraw.

Russian troops opened a new front in Ukraine’s northeast a week ago, surging across the border and quickly capturing about 10 settlements in what Ukrainian officials and military analysts described as an attempt to stretch Ukraine’s already outnumbered forces.

The Khartia Brigade, for example, has been redeployed from another hot spot on the front, around Ocheretyne, a village in the southeast. Russian forces captured Ocheretyne last month, creating a breach in Ukrainian defenses .

But experts say that another, perhaps more immediate, goal for Russia could be to advance deep enough into Ukrainian territory to push Kyiv’s forces away from the border, creating a buffer zone that would prevent the Ukrainians from targeting Russian towns and cities with artillery. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Friday that that was the goal of the current offensive.

A buffer zone might also allow Russian forces to get close enough to Kharkiv to pound it with artillery shells, escalating Moscow’s campaign to inflict hardship on the city’s inhabitants by hitting residential neighborhoods with airstrikes and targeting its power stations to cut off electricity.

“Such a buffer zone of 10 to 15 kilometers for sure would create a problem for Kharkiv,” said Mykola Bielieskov, a military analyst at the government-run National Institute for Strategic Studies in Ukraine.

Further Russian advances would return Kharkiv, now home to some 1.2 million people, to the situation it faced in the first months of the war. In 2022, Russian troops reached the outer ring of the city, prompting hundreds of thousands to flee.

Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, has described Russia’s advance toward the city as designed to sow chaos and panic. But he repeated this past week that there were no plans to evacuate the population. Instead, the city has served as a temporary home for thousands of Ukrainian civilians who have fled the fighting in the region, from villages like Lyptsi or Vovchansk, farther east.

Kharkiv, however, is not entirely safe. In recent months, Russia has increasingly targeted the city with powerful guided missiles known as glide bombs, which can deliver hundreds of tons of explosives, and S-300 antiaircraft missiles, which Moscow is now using to attack targets on the ground.

“The time it takes S-300 missiles to reach Kharkiv — it’s just minutes,” Ilya Yevlash, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said in an interview this month. “There’s no time to react to these threats.”

Only American-made Patriot air defense systems can intercept S-300 missiles fired at short range, Mr. Yevlash said, and Ukraine does not have enough of them. “We can count them on the fingers of one hand,” he said.

Ukrainian officials have urged their Western partners to send more. “We extremely need the air defense to protect Kharkiv” and other cities in Ukraine’s northeast, Andriy Yermak, the head of President Volodymy Zelensky’s office, said in an interview with The New York Times this past week. “It’s time.”

Mr. Putin said on Friday that Russian forces had no plans to take the city itself. Military experts also say that Russia lacks the forces to conduct such an operation.

Getting closer to Kharkiv, though, will not be an easy task.

Russian forces have so far pushed through largely depopulated and poorly fortified areas. Entering Lyptsi, which had a prewar population of 4,000 and is dotted with houses and buildings, will force Russian troops to engage in more difficult street fighting.

Emil Kastehelmi, an analyst for the Finnish Black Bird Group, which assessed satellite images and footage of the battlefield, noted on the social platform X that “a long chain of villages” separates Lyptsi from Kharkiv. Advancing through them one by one, he said, “would force the Russians to fight through over 17 kilometers of built areas.”

In an interview with the news agency Agence France-Presse on Saturday, Mr. Zelensky said he expected Russia to step up its offensive in the northeast, possibly by opening new fronts elsewhere, such as in the Sumy region, north of Kharkiv.

That would further stretch the Ukrainian military, which already has to defend a more than 600-mile front line. In an effort to address the shortage of troops, the Ukrainian government has passed a series of measures to widen the pool of people who can be drafted.

A mobilization law passed last month, which includes incentives for volunteers and new penalties for those trying to evade conscription, came into force on Saturday. Ukrainian men now have two months to update their personal details at military recruitment centers or online, to make it easier for the authorities to identify potential conscripts.
