My Sister My Saviour

My advantage was that my sister was also studying in the same school. She is 3 years older than me so she was my senior. During recess, I was starting to miss my parents so I got teary-eyed.

The Power of a 45-Second Investment in Relationship Building

A short, positive interaction with a student at the start of the school year can pay off all year long.

Six years ago, I started an experiment where I spoke with each student during the first week of school. I learned that this 45-second investment in each student, coupled with proactive, clear expectations, created positive relationships with students in an inclusive, safe, care-based classroom.

The beginning of the school year can be stressful! There’s so much pressure around starting the year off “right.”

Every August since 2009, teacher dreams have infiltrated my mind with impossible classroom setups and me yelling so that the kids around the corner and down the stairs behind the column can hear me. Meanwhile, I can’t find the stack of papers to hand out that I never copied. The fear of this happening in real life has caused me to be overprepared and utilize the following strategies to begin transforming classroom culture during the first week of school.

Starting Strong

On the first day, I greet students at the door with a smile, letting them know there is a seating chart and a survey for them to work on. This eases anxiety about where to sit and gives them something to do right away. The survey consists of open-ended questions to get to know them better and includes a mini-contract about open communication and my care for their success and well-being as a whole person. I hand out pencils as needed.

While students fill out the survey , music is playing to alleviate awkwardness. I tell students that I will walk around and quietly introduce myself to each of them. I ask that they introduce themselves to me, clearly saying their first and last names. This allows me to make eye contact and lets them say their name (while I make notes on the seating chart) so that I don’t mispronounce it in front of the whole class and risk embarrassing the student.

Next, I give a brief presentation about myself with pictures, so that students can see that I, too, am a real human being with passions outside of school. I share that I have been skydiving (never again), ran a marathon (over a decade ago), and enjoy Ultimate Frisbee. I show a picture of my young kids in the classroom helping me set up (as long as setting up means dumping out the bin of markers).

I include short, simple expectations around my hope for the class (a safe learning environment where we are all kind and work hard while taking risks). We end the class with name games and getting to know classmates.

Building Momentum

During the first week of school, I assign something fun and simple. I sit in the back of the classroom (while music plays and students chat) and call each student over. I scan their surveys from the first day and highlight something I have in common with them or what I’m interested in knowing more about.

I will say things like, “Oh, I really enjoy reading, too!“ or “Yeah, I had older siblings growing up as well,” or “What’s an ollie trick?” The most important thing is to make eye contact and to let them know that I’m glad to have them in class and that I care for and am here for them . I also acknowledge if they have an educational plan and how I will support them in this.

Why do these conversations transform classroom culture? Students feel valued, respected, and seen by you, which means they are less likely to act out . They see you as a person and will be more likely to approach you with questions or issues, since they’ve already talked to you one-to-one. Students will feel safer and more willing to take educational risks. It allows for a clean slate to build a positive relationship with you, regardless of whatever reputation they came in with.

Of course, these conversations need to accompany respect for all students, coupled with clear expectations, which you consistently handle when they are not met. Being proactive (strategically placing students, scaffolding/differentiating assignments, quietly checking in with students who need extra support during the first few minutes of work time, explicit directions and grading rubric) will prevent potential disruptions.

To continue building community, it’s important that students learn everyone’s name in the classroom. I use random groups for everything, and the protocol is to share names and connect first. This alleviates social difficulties around picking groups, allows students to step up into different roles, and ideally enables them to start unlikely friendships. We have fun routines built in, like engaging questions before group work, two truths and a lie once a week, and icebreaker games throughout the year.

Redirecting

Things will still come up throughout the year! Unexpected behaviors are communication that a student’s needs are not being met. In these situations, I address issues in the moment (ideally away from classmates) with a conversation where I first try to connect with them about what they are feeling or needing. I remind them that I care for them as a person and know that their behavior choice is separate from who they inherently are.

Since we had a conversation the first week of school, it’s easier to talk and come up with a plan to get the student what they need in order to feel successful and have the classroom be a calm, respectful, and safe environment.

Even if you are reading this midyear, it’s never too late to implement individual conversations with students and move toward positive change! I hope these small strategies can help make a big difference in your classroom culture.

I wasn’t anxious about back-to-school because of my kids. It was the other moms

As the summer drew to a close, I felt the usual anxiety rise up inside me. And it wasn’t just because of the whirlwind of back-to-school duties I’d now have to complete. It was because I’d be around those have-it-all-together perfect mom types.

I’d been free of them for two glorious months, and it was heaven.

I knew I shouldn’t judge them. It was hard enough being judged by society for everything we did: working, not working, helicopter, free-range — our every move evaluated with such intensity. It was maddening. I hated myself for resenting them. But I did.

It wasn’t just their sideways glances and passive-aggressive comments directed at me because I’d missed a school email about pajama day or a donation for the PTA that made me feel like I was failing as a mother. Nor the times I’d run into them at the bus stop with their sparkling white teeth holding a container of cut-up fruits for the teacher’s breakfast, flanked by their kids in matching outfits, their hair done like they just stepped out of a salon.

No, it was their very existence. The way they made it look so easy, so natural, so right. While I struggled to do it all — to be a good mother, wife, daughter, friend … but kept falling short of every single one. I couldn’t seem to do anything the way I thought I should.

I savored those summer days where I didn’t have to walk into school with my hair in its usual messy bun and Target yoga pants I’d never used for actual yoga, only to run into one of them carrying homemade gluten and nut-free vegan cupcakes for my son’s fourth grade class. And instead of being grateful for her effort and happy my son had a classmate whose mom cared about his class, I resented her, stewing in my own feelings of inadequacy.

As the days to the start of school crept closer, my panic set in. I knew I’d have to shake myself out of my schedule-free daze and deal with my to-do list, which was getting longer than a CVS receipt. And my inbox, which was filling up each day with more forms, notes, reminders and obligations.

Despite my efforts to will it not to, the first day of school inevitably arrived. And as much as I tried to prepare for the stress and stave off my insecurities, they still came flooding back.

I rushed the kids out of bed and hustled them to the bus stop. That’s when I saw the first one. She was standing there in her full glory, looking fresh and ready, with her kids by her side. I smiled and waved, trying my best to push down the green monster raging inside me. She had everything organized and was happy to chat with me about it.

“Hey, how was your summer? By the way, I signed up to be class mom for our kids’ class. Have you signed up for any of the volunteer stuff yet?” she asked.

“Umm, not … yet. I’ll have to take a look,” I said, as I noticed that my kids were chasing each other up and down the sidewalk. “Guys, stop. The bus is almost here,” I said through clenched teeth, embarrassed that they weren’t as well behaved as her children, who were quietly standing by her side.

She shared that her son and daughter had been reading high school level books for fun and doing math problems during dinner. I’m pretty sure my kids hadn’t done a single math problem the whole summer.

I forced a smile as I tried to push down the bile rising in my throat. As I looked at her kids’ faces and their adorable new outfits with equally sweet backpacks, she’s a good mom, you’re a bad mom , kept swirling in my head.

Watching her put her arm around her daughter as she looked down the street to see where the bus was, I thought back to our morning. I’d woken up later than I’d planned, yelled up the stairs for the kids to get ready, then stuffed string cheese, crackers and might-have-expired granola bars into their banged-up lunch boxes. Once they finally got downstairs with their mismatched outfits, I rushed them out the door, desperately hoping we wouldn’t miss the bus.

When it finally came, Good Mom bent down, brushed a stray hair behind her daughter’s ear and tightened her son’s shoelace before hugging and kissing them both goodbye. Distracted by the picture-perfect scene, I missed my own kids getting on the bus. No hug, no kiss, no tightening of shoelaces. Just the smoke from the exhaust as the bus left.

Good Mom and I stood and waved to our kids as we watched the bus get smaller down the tree-lined road. Then she bid me farewell as she dashed off to her SoulCycle class in a spanking new matching Lululemon outfit. I waved, boiling inside, hating myself for being so jealous of her … everything.

After the parents dispersed, I sat on the worn wooden bench under the maple tree, my body still buzzing with the adrenaline of the first morning routine and my bad mom baggage.

Looking down the empty street, with only the rumbling of an engine in the distance and the chirping of birds overhead, something inside of me snapped. I slumped over, holding my head in my hands as a sound came out of my mouth I didn’t recognize. It was like a desperate pain leaving my body, a combination of a cry and a whimper. I felt tears filling my eyes.

What are you doing , I thought. Why do I let myself get twisted up in the senseless comparisons year after year? Why do side glances of other moms and their seemingly perfect parenting break me so easily?

“Stop it.” The words came tumbling out. I said them again, this time louder. “Stop it!” I could hear my breath going in and out of my nose as I looked around to make sure I was still alone.

My body felt like an empty sack, worn and depleted. Stop doing to yourself and to those other moms what society does to so many mothers, I told myself. Judging, comparing, scrutinizing. It’s none of your business what they do or don’t do. You don’t know their life, their pain, their stories. You have no idea what they’re going through behind those shiny surfaces.

Then it hit me, like a hard snowball to the face. Instead of thinking about my kids, I’d spent the entire morning twisted up in my own dark self-doubts. I’d lost those precious moments with them — the excitement of the first day of school, their joy as they ran around with each other, their scramble to find their favorite seats when they got on the bus.

Did they look at me through the window to give me a toothy smile? I was so distracted by my obsession with another woman’s life that I missed my own children’s sweet faces as they left me to go out into the world. And this wasn’t the only moment I’d lost. If I was being honest, I’d wasted countless hours, days and weeks comparing myself to other moms, hate-scrolling through snapshots of their seemingly happy lives on social media, and being hurt by slights that shouldn’t have taken my attention away from my family.

As I watched the leaves swaying with the light morning gust, tears rolled down my face as my sorrow rose inside me.

I said it one more time, but now in a whisper. “Stop it.”

Walking home in my pajama pants and stretched out T-shirt, I felt a heaviness in my chest and a mountain of regret I didn’t know how to digest.

Then as soon as I opened the front door and saw the line of little shoes tattered from running around in parks and playgrounds, I knew things would have to change.

So, I made myself a promise. That I would find a way to be kinder to myself and other women as we navigated this complicated, overwhelming and beautiful thing called motherhood. That no matter how hard things got, I’d fight against my feelings of inadequacy and not-good-enoughness, and instead of giving in to those doubts, I’d fill those moments with grace, for myself and others.

I can’t say that I’ve kept that promise every day, but I have kept it more days than not. And that’s something good. Something that’s helped me find peace, gratitude and love as I continue to navigate the incredible privilege of being a mother.

On the morning of my first day at school, I woke up very early. I was so excited that I didn’t even need my mom to wake me up. I quickly got out of bed and put on my brand new school uniform. It was a crisp white shirt and a blue skirt. I felt so grown up and important in that uniform. After getting dressed, I had a delicious breakfast that my mom had prepared for me. I was too excited to eat much, but I knew I needed the energy for the big day ahead.

Arriving at School

When I arrived at school, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were so many students and parents everywhere. The school was buzzing with activity. Some kids were crying, while others were running around with their friends. I held onto my mom’s hand tightly as we walked through the gate. I was a little nervous, but also very curious to see what my new school looked like.

Meeting the Teacher and Classmates

As we entered my classroom, I saw my teacher standing at the front. She had a warm smile on her face and welcomed me with open arms. I instantly felt a little better knowing that my teacher seemed nice. She introduced me to the other kids in the class. They all smiled and said hello. I was relieved to see that everyone was friendly. I even made a new friend named Ada. We talked and laughed together, and suddenly, I didn’t feel so nervous anymore.

Our first day of school was filled with exciting activities. We learned about the alphabet and practiced writing our names. My teacher made the lessons so much fun that I didn’t even realize I was learning. We played games, sang songs, and even had a little art project. I was having such a great time that I almost forgot I was in school.

Looking back, my first day at school was a rollercoaster of emotions. I started the day feeling excited, then I was nervous, and by the end of the day, I was happy and relieved. I realized that school wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. My teacher and classmates were all so nice, and I felt like I was a part of a big family. I was proud of myself for being brave and stepping into this new world.

7 Writing Ideas for the First Week of School

The first week of school is usually a blur. We are all settling into a new routine and the summer haze is lifting-slowly. This is the time we are getting to know our students, but also the time there is much to be done. We are settling into a new routine, adjusting students to a new routine, filling out enrollment reports, and putting the finishing touches on our classrooms. For this reason, coming up with first week activities can be a bit stressful. For the past few years, I’ve used these seven writing activities the first week of school at various times throughout the day and they all serve their own purpose.

Goal Setting

My fifth grade team is departmentalized and I teach writing. For this reason, I make this activity specifically writing focused, and put these as the first page of their binders on the first day of school. However, I’ve given an example in the picture below of how this can be done for any subject or grade level. Goal setting is extremely important because it reminds students that there is a purpose and a focus to their learning. I refer back to this page often throughout the year so they see whether or not they are meeting their goals. The picture I listed here is general, but I encourage you to have students list several goals and make them specific and attainable. You can download this FREE goal setting template here .

My Three Best Summer Memories

This activity is great for the very first day. Students can reflect on their summer and then share. It’s a great icebreaker because students love to read aloud their memories and share their pictures. Many times, individual personalities also come through and you can get a sense of what student hobbies are!

What I Want My Teacher to Know About Me

This is my favorite writing activity for the first week of school. I learn so many things about my students, and I constantly look back at these pages throughout the year. I’ve had students share simple things with me such as their favorite ice cream flavor, or very personal things such as family situations at home. This assignment is special to me because students feel they can share and they know I will read them. I often make sure I mention them throughout the next few weeks. For example, “Christopher, when do you start soccer practice?” Or, “Kayla, I’ll make sure I give you a signal before I ask you to read out loud because I know it makes you anxious.” This helps reduce the anxiety for students and create a friendly class atmosphere!

This Year I Want to Learn

I love reading what types of things students are interested in learning for the year. Some of which we won’t be able to cover, but I try my hardest to make sure students learn many at least one of the things they share on this sheet. This is something I created as kind of a unique spin on a KWL. In the morning, you can have students write what they k now and w onder about the grade they are starting. At the end of the day, have students write what they l earned about their classroom/grade. It’s a also a great way to reinforce rules and expectations!

Our life is a combination of many events and experiences. But not everything is remembered for a long time. However, some events can never be forgotten. My first day at school was such a memorable day.

It was January 1, 2000. That day my father took me to our village primary school. My school name is Chhanbari Govt. Primary School. It took me a while to find myself in the new environment of the school compound for the first time. My father took me to the headmaster’s room. My heart started beating fast. The headmaster asked me my name and some more simple questions and I answered them.

He then sent me to my class with the clerk. There I see a lot of students like me. They were strangers to me. But it didn’t take long for them to become my friends.

My father took me to the headmaster. My heart was beating fast. The headmaster looked at me, smiled, and said, “so, you are the son of my dear pupil and now you are going to be my pupil too.” I politely replied, “yes sir”. My reply seemed to please him. He then asked me a few questions from my books and I promptly answered them all. I was admitted into class one.

When my father left me at school to attend classes, I found myself all alone. There were so many boys and classmates. But they were all strangers to me. When the bell rang, our class teacher entered. We all stood up. Hardly had I taken my seat when my teacher put me a question. I got afraid and stood dumbfounded. My classmates laughed and I got more nervous.

I felt excited about the new school environment. The teachers taught us with love and with a smile. They have left a deep impression on my young mind.

During recess, while other boys played, I simply, looked on. I did not even eat the tiffin that my mother had given me. I was thinking of her and of my home all the time. At the end of school, I ran home and told my mother all that had happened in the school.

But it didn’t take long for my school to become my favorite place. Those who were strangers at my first meet soon became my best friends . I left there five years of my childhood. The golden memory of going to school on the first day will remain in my heart forever.

We all have different kinds of memories. Many are of happiness and joy, some are of sorrow. Some memories we lose, but some are so bright that they are never lost. The memory of my first day at school is still bright in my heart. I was 6 years old then. When my father told me that I would start going to school, I was very excited and nervous. What a place for school, how others would treat me on my first day at school, I wondered. The next morning my mother woke me up in the morning. Wearing new clothes, I started going to school holding my father’s hand. Dad first took me to the school’s headmaster’s room. He smiled and asked my name. Then he called the class teacher and sent me to my class. I was surprised to see children my age filling the room. They embraced me with love, everyone became my friend in a few days. They were my classmates, playmates too. I played a lot on the school field. I still think I can recognize every grain of sand in that field. I will never forget the memory of my first day at school.

The day I went to school for the first time was a memorable day in my life. Then I was a six-year-old boy. My parents decided to enroll me in Motijheel Ideal School. It’s a reputed school in Dhaka . I would go to school and study, I was very excited to think about it. One morning my mother prepared me for school. He gave me a new dress. Before I left for school for the first time in my life, I was worried about new places and new people. The school was not far from our home . I walked holding my father’s hand. Within minutes we reached the school. My father introduced me to the headmaster. He asked me my name and a few other questions and was happy to hear my answer. He completed my admission process. Then a teacher took me to the classroom and introduced me to my classmates. Seeing so many new faces, I got a little nervous at first. But everyone in the classroom was very friendly. They treated me well on my first day of school. So, it didn’t take me long to get along with everyone. Even on the first day, I became friends with some of them. Dad was waiting for me at the school gate. As soon as the last bell rang, I ran to my father. When I returned home, my mother hugged me. The day I went to school for the first time has been unforgettable in my life.

The mpox strain spreading now is different from the one in 2022: Here's what to know

The World Health Organization’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years may seem like déjà vu — but there are key differences between the strain that’s causing international concern now and the one that spread in 2022.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection characterized by painful lesions. It’s spread by direct contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated items like clothing or bedding.

The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II.

Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide .

But now, a version of clade I has spread internationally. The outbreak started in January 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has since reached 12 other countries in the region.

On Thursday, Sweden confirmed the first known infection of clade I outside Africa , though Swedish health officials said the person was infected while spending time in Africa. Health authorities in Pakistan also confirmed a case of mpox on Friday but have not identified the strain yet.

Clade I is more transmissible than clade II and capable of being more severe, so infectious disease experts are concerned about further international spread.

“We should have learned a lesson from 2022 that an infection anywhere is potentially an infection everywhere,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health.

How does this version of mpox spread?

Mpox has historically spread in a few ways. The first is through close, personal contact with an infected person, such as skin-to-skin contact with rashes or with saliva or mucus. The second is via contact with contaminated materials. And the third is contact with infected animals: hunting, trapping or cooking them, touching sick rodents or getting bitten or scratched.

In 2022, the version of clade II that spread globally, dubbed clade IIb, was passed primarily through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo recently, clade Ib has also been spreading through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men. Research that hasn’t yet been published or peer reviewed linked an outbreak in an eastern mining town in Congo to professional sex work in bars.

But that’s not the only way the virus is being transmitted. Dr. Stuart Isaacs, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said much of the spread of clade I could be due to exposure to animals and transmission within households, but limited surveillance in the regions where the virus is make it difficult to know for sure.

Isaacs said there’s early evidence that clade Ib has certain “properties that are allowing it to spread more readily person to person.”

How severe are the recent cases?

In the past, outbreaks of clade I have been deadlier than clade 2, killing up to 10% of people who got sick . But more recent outbreaks have had lower death rates. Out of an estimated 22,000 cases in this outbreak in Congo , more than 1,200 people have died — which puts the fatality rate at just above 5%.

By comparison, clade II outbreaks in Africa have generally had a mortality rate of around 1%, and just 0.2% of cases linked to the 2022 global outbreak were fatal.

Rimoin said the disease’s severity “can have less to do with the actual clade and more to do with route of transmission, the immune system of the individual, the source of the infection.”

The threat in the U.S. could be milder than in Africa, according to Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“The underlying health conditions of the population in the DRC are probably contributing to the current case fatality rate,” he said, using the acronym for the Democratic Republic of Congo. “With less malnutrition and better access to health care resources, I would imagine that the case fatality rate will not be as high as we’re seeing in the DRC.”

Vaccines for mpox are also widely available in the U.S., following a major rollout effort in 2022. Two doses of the mpox vaccine or a previous clade II infection should protect against severe illness from clade I, the Department of Health and Human Service said Wednesday.

Do mpox symptoms differ between the clades?

Symptoms of the two mpox clades can be difficult to distinguish from each other.

The illness generally starts with a rash that progresses to small bumps on the skin, followed by blisters that fill with whitish fluid — a hallmark of the disease — and eventually scab over. People may also experience a fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes.

These symptoms often disappear on their own within a few weeks. But in severe cases, people may develop larger, more widespread lesions, secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, heart inflammation or swelling of the brain. Immunocompromised people may develop atypical symptoms and have a greater risk of hospitalization and death.

Historically, mpox lesions have tended to appear on the face, chest, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. But during the 2022 outbreak, people frequently developed lesions around the genital and anal region or inside the mouth and throat, presumably because of how the virus was spreading at the time . The lesions were also fewer in number and less pronounced overall.

Some cases of this nature have also been detected in the current outbreak in Congo.

“There is talk that there are more people that have lesions around the genitals this time around than previous clade I outbreaks,” said Amira Albert Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University. “It’s going to take us some time to really understand what may be going on here.”

How to handle a tough first day of school

On her first day of preschool, my daughter woke up ready to go! She was joining the Owl class, and so she put on an owl shirt, helped me pack her lunch, and grabbed her blankie for nap time.

The day didn’t go as planned.

About 30 minutes after drop-off, I got a call saying she had been accidentally placed in the wrong class, so they were taking her over to the Bear class instead.

Two hours after that, I got a call asking if she had lunch. Apparently, it got lost in the shuffle of moving rooms. And when I picked her up, she wordlessly handed me her wet blanket. She had spilled her water on it just before nap time.

In these moments, I try to take a deep breath and check my own emotions first. If she had watched me, say, yell at the principal for the placement error or rush in to meet her with a panicked look on my face, it would have escalated an already tough day. What she needed was my reassuring calm that she was okay and that tomorrow would be a little easier.

Kids bring so many emotions to the first week of school: excitement and fear, wonder and worry. So when something goes wrong — from someone mispronouncing their name to not understanding the directions, from missing home to dropping their lunch on the floor — it can feel overwhelming.

Here are four ways you can help kids navigate heading back to school.

1. Talk about what to expect in advance

Fred Rogers once said, “When children know ahead of time what’s going to happen — and not happen — they can prepare themselves for what’s coming. They can think about it and get used to their feelings about it.”

Talk to your child about what school will look like in simple, practical terms. What are the names of their teachers? What will the morning routine at home look like? What will they need to put in their backpack each day? How will they get to school? What will they eat for lunch? How will they get home?

When you talk about what to expect, you can answer many of their unspoken questions — and better help your child navigate those unexpected moments that arise.

2. Prepare for big emotions

It takes a lot of energy to adjust to a new routine and get to know new teachers and classmates. As one of my favorite kindergarten teachers reminds families, it takes most children six weeks to adjust to a new school year. Those after school tantrums are normal and don’t mean they are having a terrible time at school!

Kids often hold in their emotions during the day. After all, you’ve spent years helping them develop strategies to manage their behavior and work well in groups. But undoubtedly at least one thing happens every day that makes them feel worried, sad, or confused. Those feelings often come spilling out in the safety of home. Create a predictable after school routine, including a snack and some downtime. And when your child does have a meltdown, stay close and stay calm. The storm will pass, and then we can help them work through the emotions behind it.

3. Express your confidence in them

Children read our emotions for cues about how they should react. If we express our confidence in them, they will pick up on this.

Last year, like just every other parent in America, I was really nervous about what the school year would bring! But the night before the first day, I told my rising first-grader: “I am so excited for all the books you are going to read, all the words you are going to write, all the pictures you are going to draw, all the structures you are going to build, all the math you are going to learn, and all the ways you will become stronger and kinder and more responsible. I love watching you grow!”

When something goes wrong, you can also use it as an opportunity to express your confidence in them:

Thanks for telling me what happened. We will figure this out together.
Wow, that sounds like a tough situation at recess. You did the right thing to tell your teacher.
I know you were really nervous about ____, but you did it. You are so brave.
Learning something new can be so frustrating. But you keep working at it. That’s perseverance.

4. Reach out to the teacher

The parent-teacher relationship is so key to helping kids thrive. If you notice your child struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, reach out to your child’s teacher. If you have questions about the classroom or your child’s progress, reach out! You do not need to wait for the first parent-teacher conference to make contact.

When I taught elementary school, I would send home a letter in August asking, “What do you want me to know about your child? What are some of their strengths and interests? Do they have any hopes or worries about school?” Now that I’m a parent, I send my own email each year, sharing a few details about my kids that I think will be helpful for the teacher.

Finally, it’s totally normal if you as the parent are having anxiety about the start of a new year. We are all working so hard to take care of our kids that we sometimes need a reminder to take care of our own needs, too. As Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California’s Surgeon General and a pediatrician, told me , “Our emotional wellbeing is the most important ingredient for our children's emotional wellbeing. Self-care is not selfish.”

New teachers, classmates, routines and expectations -- a new school year almost always means change for both kids and their caregivers. And that can be nerve-wracking for everyone.

To help families ease into the transition, Life Kit asked teachers, pediatricians and child development experts for their best back-to-school advice. These tips have been edited for length and clarity.

😴 Adjust your child's summer sleep schedule to a school schedule . At least one or two weeks before school starts, move bedtime and wake-up time up by 15-minute increments every few days until the desired schedule is reached. — Dr. Nilong Vyas , pediatrician and sleep consultant

👋 Make up a special goodbye ritual together. Morning goodbyes can be challenging. But you can create daily memories your child will cherish for years to come. Say, “See you later, alligator! In a while, crocodile!”, do a special handshake or enjoy an extra-long hug. You can also kiss your child’s palm and then hold each other’s hands tightly to “seal it in.” Tell your child to remember they’ll carry your kiss with them all day long, and they can do the same for you! — Jeanette Betancourt , senior vice president of U.S. social impact, Sesame Workshop

☕️ Fill their connection cup before and after school. Even if you're tired in the morning, set that alarm for 15 minutes earlier so you can have a snuggle session with your child. 📣 Pour positive words of affirmation into your children on a daily basis. For example, “I love you. I’m proud of you. It’s going to be a great day. 6 Things to Remember for the First Week of School

Luckily, when I started teaching, someone told me to make sure I had sharpened pencils ready for the first day of school . What they didn’t tell me was what to do when the air conditioning stops working on your very first day in the classroom. In August (in Texas!). I can’t warn you of alllll the things that could go wrong, but lets at least cover a few things you want to make sure you have in place for the first week of school.

It is SO important the first week of school includes activities that build community, establish boundaries, and are engaging.

That’s what this post is all about- necessary activities to do with your kids to set up for a successful year!

6 STEPS TO SETTING UP YOUR CLASSROOM

First Day of School

Once your classroom is set up and all the “prep” work is done for welcoming students into your classroom, it’s time to get planned for the first day of school.

When planning for the first day, you want to make sure you have some version of all of these items planned out. This will help you have a smooth first day with your new kiddos!

Write a DETAILED Plan

I can’t stress this enough. Incredibly detailed. Down to every five minutes if you have to.

I like to create a “first-day lesson plan” that is completely separate from my normal lesson plans. These first-day plans are typed up by time and subject and include activity plans as well as materials needed for each activity.

Discuss Procedures

The primary focus of the first week of school should be getting students acquainted with the classroom management routines and procedures.

The students need to understand that the classroom is a community but that you are the leader. As Beth (The School Marm) says, you need to establish your authority.

You should have already outlined your behavior management plans over the summer break (you need four of them!):

Whole Group Plan
Small Group Plan
Individual Plan
Challenging Behavior Plan (for when your other three don’t work for one of your students)

Then, during the first week of school you can work on actually implementing those behavior management plans you worked on. Here’s a step-by-step process for implementing management plans.

Scavenger Hunt

I always include a scavenger hunt on the first day . This is how kids get familiar with the classroom routines and learn a lot of the expectations.

Team Builders

These are a MUST! The first day of school is so intimidating for little ones. Providing them opportunities to interact with their new peers is a perfect way to get them to open up.

I like to use team builders from the Silly Sports and Goofy Games book. There are a ton of fun and non-academic activities in there that kids kinder-5th can do.

First Week of School Activities

Just as I do for my first day plans, I write detailed plans for the first week of school.

They aren’t as detailed as day one. But I write a lot of notes about what activities I want to do. I also plan for two to three team builders per day during the first week. (After the first week I do one a day.)

One problem I often see with many teachers is the pressure to start the curriculum within the first week of school. I understand why administrators expect that from teachers but I don’t agree with it.

I recommend, instead, focusing the first two to three weeks of school primarily on teaching, implementing, and practicing routines. It might seem like a big use of time upfront but it will come in sooo helpful as the year progresses.

Reading and Writing Activities

During the first week, I love to read books to my students. Read Alouds are one of my favorite parts of teaching.

I also like to incorporate writing activities with the stories we read. This way kids are making connections, practicing their writing skills, and slowly easing back into the swing of school with lessons that are manageable.

It is also a great opportunity to teach social skills and have conversations about expectations in your classroom.

Set Up Journals and Intro Stations

The first week is a great time to practice listening skills and following directions.

Guide students as they set up their math, reading, and writing journals. I like to give them time to decorate the cover or inside page to their liking.

This is also a good time to start teaching your students the expectations for stations .

I go over these expectations one by one and in a lot of detail.

We practice our stamina and learn to read for long periods of time.

After the reading stations are introduced and somewhat “under control,” we move on to writing and word-work stations.

Organize Your Classroom Papers. Button: "Enroll Now"

Stations are crucial in the elementary classroom. They are a great way to engage your students while you are meeting with small groups and they are an awesome activity for when you need to be out last minute.

Here are some tips on how to organize stations in your elementary classroom.

Team Builders, Team Builders, Team Builders

Oh, and class builders! All this week you need to be providing activities for students to do that build teamwork and friendship.

STEM activities with their team are a great way to incorporate higher-level thinking, social skills, and teamwork all into one lesson!

The first few weeks are crucial to creating a warm and welcoming environment and one that your students feel comfortable in.

As I said above, I am of the mindset that the first week or two be very intentional with team building, class building, and cooperative learning structures . I will mix in some academics. However, I feel it is more important that students build a relationship with you and their classmates during this time.

Oh, and I forgot one more activity for the first week of school…Happy hour!

In Conclusion,

The first week of school should primarily be focused on setting up routines and expectations in your classroom.

Don’t stress too much about getting to academics. Instead, review standards from the year before.

Here are a few other things to ensure you have good plans for the first week of school:

Write out a detailed lesson plan for the first day (down to the minute almost!)
Include a scavenger hunt to help students get acquainted with the classroom
Lots of reading and writing activities
Introduce stations and start practicing the routines for them (here’s how!)
Sharpen pencils for the first day
Set up subject journals
Do LOTS of teambuilders and classbuilders ( I get ideas from this book )
