M.A. Thesis Guidelines

The Thesis is optional in the M.A program. In other words, graduate students in the M.A. program are not required to write a thesis. You may therefore take your entire 30 units in course work and pass the comprehensive exam (Plan B). Alternatively, if you have a strong record and submit a strong proposal, you may be permitted to write a six-unit thesis as part of your 30-unit program (Plan A). 

Students planning to write a thesis should take note of the guidelines and plan ahead accordingly. In order to write a thesis, you need to do the following:

First, speak with a faculty member with expertise in the area in which you plan to write your thesis. If he or she agrees to direct your project, then write a thesis proposal with that faculty member's guidance. You will also need two additional faculty members to serve as readers on your thesis committee. When your project director is fully satisfied with your proposal, submit it to the Graduate Advisor along with a cover sheet signed by your thesis committee. Do this as early as possible in the semester prior to the semester you intend to enroll in English 299.

Ideally, you should do your preliminary research over the summer to identify your area/topic of interest so that you can discuss this with potential advisors/readers early in the fall semester in order to form your thesis committee and prepare your proposal for formal submission (usually by November 1). The proposal must be approved by the Graduate Committee. Approval is usually granted only to students who have achieved high grades in their graduate course work and who submit strong proposals.

If your proposal is approved, use the winter break to work on your thesis. In Spring, plan to submit your draft to your thesis director by February 1 and a revised draft to your 2nd and 3rd readers by April 1 to allow sufficient time for feedback and revision.  Follow the latest MLA Handbook as Graduate Studies will expect your thesis to be accurately and consistently formatted.  

Planning ahead and following the guidelines and timeline is critical to ensuring your thesis is of high quality and you are able to finish in time for May graduation.

The Proposal

The proposal should have a coversheet [pdf] . The proposal itself should

  • explain clearly what you want to write about and why your topic is important
  • describe any previous work you've done in the field
  • note what scholarly work has already been done on the topic and explain how your work will revise or augment this
  • present a short, tentative outline indicating your main point and how you plan to demonstrate it
  • include a brief, annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources relevant to your topic, along with a non-annotated bibliography of works you expect to examine as you progress
  • must follow the MLA format
  • should be about 6 to 10 pages long, plus coversheet

The Graduate Committee understands that you can't know precisely what your argument will be until you have completed it. A proposal is simply a clear explanation of what you expect to achieve. In deciding which thesis proposals will be approved, the committee will look carefully at the quality of the writing in the proposal. This should be in every respect professional: clear, accurate, properly documented, etc.

When your project director is entirely satisfied with your proposal, bring it to the Graduate Advisor. When the advisor has also approved it, give the advisor ten copies of the proposal to be distributed to the Graduate Committee. Do this as early as possible in the semester prior to the semester you intend to enroll in English 299. (The committee will not consider proposals submitted in the last four weeks of the semester.) Remember, your proposal must be approved by the Graduate Committee, and approval will be granted only to students who have achieved high grades in their graduate course work and who submit strong proposals.

Writing the Thesis

After your proposal is approved, enroll for six units of English 299. You may take six units in one semester, or three units in each of two semesters. You will receive a Satisfactory Progress grade until you have completed the thesis; then your director will change the grade to Credit. If you fail to complete the thesis within two years, you must formally request an extension. Otherwise the grade will revert to No Credit and you will need to enroll in 299 again.

Consult frequently with your thesis director and show him or her drafts of your work as you proceed chapter by chapter or section by section. When your director decides the thesis is presentable, show your work to the second and third readers. Be sure to follow posted deadlines for consultation with readers and that you understand readers' comments before you complete a final draft.

Submit the Thesis

See Graduate Studies' General Instructions for Master's Theses and follow its required format scrupulously. Check posted deadlines for submission of theses to the Graduate Studies Office.

When your thesis has been signed by all readers, remind your director to submit the necessary form to change your 299 units to Credit.

English and Comparative Literary Studies

Ma in english literature dissertation.

The MA dissertation requires students to undertake and complete a sustained research project of 16,000 words on a topic of special interest.

TERM 1: Writing your proposal

Dissertation proposals – of 500-words in length – must be submitted to the department by noon on Friday 30th December 2018 (week 9 of term 1). Please send your proposal directly to the MA convener Dr. Stephen Purcell ( [email protected] ).

As part of your Introduction to Research Methods course you will take part in a dissertation proposal writing workshop. This will help you to think about how to frame your proposal. You are also encouraged to look at the areas of expertise covered by our staff and to use staff office hours to discuss ideas with relevant specialists and potential supervisors before finalizing your proposal.

TERM 2: Starting research

You will be assigned a supervisor by the end of week 1 of term 2, and in this term you are strongly advised to begin work on your dissertation research.

In term 2 you will hold two meetings with your supervisor: the first will be an introductory meeting and the second should take placed before your dissertation progress report is due.

The Dissertation Progress Report includes the following:

  • Dissertation Progress Report form
  • title and chapter breakdown
  • an abstract of 1000 words
  • a bibliography

This Dissertation Progress Report must be submitted to the Postgraduate Programmes Officer by the end of week 9 of term 2.*

The progress reports will be reviewed by the MA Convenor. If there are concerns about progress, the MA Convenor will contact you.

TERM 3: Research and writing

During term 3 you should be hard at work on your dissertation. During this should meet with your supervisor on three occasions (spread evenly across the term). Your supervisor is permitted to read one rough draft of your dissertation, which must be sent to them by the end of term 3.

Number of supervisions

Students receive five supervisions for their MA dissertations, two in term 2 and three in term 3. Supervisions are generally around 45-60 minutes in length, but the initial two meetings may be shorter.

Email contact with your supervisor

You are welcome to contact your supervisor by email. As with all the department's staff, you can usually expect a supervisor to respond within about 24 hours (excluding weekends) if your query is straightforward. For more complex requests, supervisors will need more time to respond and you need to keep in mind that an email exchange is no substitute for a face-to-face meeting. Face-to-face supervision of dissertations concludes at the end of term 3. Over the summer months of July and August, when staff undertake their own research activities, email contact is at the supervisor's discretion and it will very likely take longer for them to respond to any message you send.

Dissertations are due on 1 st September .

The following reminders may be useful:

  • You must be consistent in the style convention used (preferably either MLA, MHRA, Chicago or Harvard)
  • Footnotes/Endnotes are included in the final word count; the 'Bibliography' is not included in the final word count
  • An abstract is not required in the final submission
  • A margin of up to 10% over or under length is allowed, but dissertations that are between 10-24% over-length will incur a penalty of 3 marks
  • Work that is more than 25% over-length will be refused

Students must complete 30 credit hours of coursework (10 courses). At least 21 hours must be taken at CU Boulder. All courses must be 5000 level or above. Subject to approval by the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, up to 6 hours of coursework may be taken in departments other than English. Students may earn the MA-Literature degree through coursework alone. A thesis is optional (see Thesis Option below).

All graduate students must follow the Graduate School requirements for Graduation .

Required Courses (6 credits)

  • Survey of Contemporary Literary and Cultural Theory (ENGL 5019) Introduces students to current theoretical issues and practices. Students are required to take this course during the Fall semester of their first year.

During the Spring semester of their first year, students must enroll in one of the following courses:

  • Introduction to the Profession (ENGL 5459) Introduces students to the current state of major fields in literary and cultural studies, and to graduate-level research methods, bibliography, and writing skills. Students who elect to take this course must register during the Spring semester of their first year. OR ,
  • Studies in Special Topics 1: Teaching English (ENGL 5529) Introduces students to pedagogy theory, practice, and methods for English instruction. Students who elect to take this course must register during the Spring semester of their first year.

Distribution Requirement (24 credits)

  • MA-Literature courses should be distributed as follows: I. Two courses before 1800 (courses should survey a broad range of literature from two different periods prior to 1800) II. Two courses after 1800 (courses should survey a broad range of literature from two different periods after 1800) III. One multicultural and/or postcolonial course (may overlap with requirement I or II) IV. One poetry intensive course (may overlap with requirement I or II)
  • Two - Four Electives Thesis hours, if taken, may replace electives. Electives may include courses from other departments, especially if a student is pursuing a certificate program in another department or program. Any courses taken in other departments for credit towards degree, whether for a certificate program or not, must be approved by the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies.

A master’s thesis is 50-75 pages in length, and represents an original work of literary analysis that is supported by extensive research into primary and secondary sources. It includes an abstract of  250 - 350 words and a bibliography, exclusive of the page length for the body of the thesis.

A master’s thesis is optional for the MA-Literature. There are several benefits to writing a thesis:

  • You can continue to develop your skills as a writer and take pleasure in literature.
  • You have the opportunity to work directly with a faculty member of your choice, in an area of your own choosing.
  • If you plan to apply to doctoral programs in English, you can use part of your thesis as a writing sample. Since you complete a thesis at the end of your degree program, this capstone project may reflect your current strengths as a writer better than your earlier seminar papers. Students who apply to Ph.D. programs can also use a seminar paper or the paper revised in the professionalization seminar as their writing sample.

The decision to write a thesis must be made by the end of your first year of study . It takes two semesters (each with three credits) to research and write an MA thesis. Students earning the MA in Literature must complete a foreign language requirement demonstrating proficiency in one foreign language. There are four options for fulfilling this requirement:

  • by taking a Language Proficiency Exam in the language of their choice.
  • by taking two semesters of a 2000-level language course for credit and completing it with a grade of B or better.  In the second instance, courses would be in excess of the thirty hours required for the degree. Summer language intensive programs at other universities can be substituted for the 2000-level course with the approval of the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies.
  • by taking two semesters of Old English (ENGL 5003, ENGL 5013, ENGL 5023).
  • by transferring two language courses taken at another college or university. In order to qualify, the courses (i) must have been taken within the last three years, (ii) must be equivalent to a 2000-level language course at the University of Colorado Boulder, and (iii) must have been passed with a grade of B or better.

Scholarships

Students within the MA in Literature program are eligible to apply for a number of scholarships and awards offered by the English Department. These scholarships are offered on a competitive basis, and individual award amounts may range from $500 - $6,000. Teaching Assistant Positions

Additional funding is also available to MA program students in the form of teaching assistant (TA) positions. TAships provide a semester salary of several thousand dollars, tuition remission, and a contribution towards the Student Gold Health Insurance Plan premium. Typically between four to six TAships are available through the English Department each semester and the department strives to offer a TAships to MA students whenever possible, however the availability of these positions is not guaranteed.

Opportunities for teaching assistant, research assistant (RA), graduate assistant (GA) appointments may also be available through other academic departments.

Course Overview

An MA by Research in English Literature enables you to undertake a substantial independent research project of a publishable standard. Your project will take one year full-time or two years part-time. It is suitable if you want to undertake a first research degree as an isolated culmination of taught studies, or if you are considering further research in form of a PhD. You will submit a thesis of up to 40,000 words, demonstrating original research with a significant contribution to the subject area. This is followed by an oral examination of the thesis (a viva voce examination, or viva). A number of research groups also offer focus and community for staff and postgraduates:   •  The Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Research (MEMO) •  The Centre for research into Gender in Culture and Society (GENCAS) •  Centre for Research into the English literature and language of Wales (CREW) We offer supervision in most areas of literature from the middle ages to the present. Our particular research strengths include: •  Welsh writing in English •  American literature •  Gender •  Medieval, renaissance, eighteenth and nineteenth-century writing and culture •  Modernism and postmodernism •  Irish poetry •  Contemporary literature •  Critical and cultural theory •  Science Fiction and Ecology/Environmentalism •  Human-Animal Studies Your project will be agreed in consultation with supervisors and we recommend these discussions are started before applying, to help draw up an initial proposal. You will be closely supervised by two experienced academics with relevant expertise throughout the course of the project. This involves fortnightly meetings in your first term and meetings at regular agreed intervals thereafter. As a research student, you are required to attend skills and training courses. You deliver presentations to research students and staff at departmental seminars, at the annual departmental postgraduate symposium in June, and at the School of Culture and Communication Postgraduate conference.

Entry Requirements

MA by Research  - You should hold or expect to achieve a minimum of an upper second class honours degree (2:1), or equivalent, in a related subject or hold relevant work experience. If you hold a qualification from a non-UK institution please see our Country Specific Postgraduate Entry Requirements.

If English is not your first language you will need an acceptable pass in an approved English Language qualification to make sure you get the full benefit from studying at Swansea. We consider a wide range of qualifications, including the Swansea University English Test, the British Council IELTS test (with a score of at least 6.5 and 6.5 in each component). Applicants to this programme would normally be expected to meet the minimum entry requirements indicated above. The College/School reserves the right to ask for higher academic grades and qualifications. Admissions decisions take into account not only prior academic qualifications, but also factors including the standard of the research synopsis/proposal submitted by the applicant, their performance at interview (if required), intensity of competition for limited places and relevant professional experience (where appropriate).

How you are Supervised

We take care to ensure that each MA by Research student has the expert supervision required to complete their project within the candidature period. You will have a minimum of two supervisors based in the Department. Upon receipt of your application, we will identify supervisors whose research expertise matches your chosen topic. You will usually meet your supervisors once a month, and possibly more often at critical stages of your candidature, including preparing for final submission. MA by Research students are eligible to apply for an upgrade to a Ph.D within the first year of their candidature, if they demonstrate the ability to perform at doctoral level.

This Programme Specification refers to the current academic year and provides indicative content for information. Programme Summary

This MA by Research in English Literature at Swansea will enable you to undertake a research project led by your own interests. It is a highly respected qualification which can enable a future career in academia or a wider scope for employment in fields such as education, government or the private sector. A thesis of 40,000 words will be submitted for assessment demonstrating original research with a substantive contribution to the subject area. The Masters is examined following an oral examination of the thesis (a viva voce examination or viva). You will acquire research skills for high-level work and skills and training programmes are available on campus for further support.

This Masters programme will provide students with:

Programme Structure

The programme comprises three key elements:

  • Entry and confirmation of candidature
  • Main body of research
  • Thesis and viva voce examination

The programme comprises of the undertaking of an original research project of 1 year duration full time (2 years duration part time). 

Students for the Masters by Research in English Literature are examined in two parts.

The first part is a thesis which is an original body of work representing the methods and results of the research project. The word limit is 40,000 for the main text. The word limit does not include appendices (if any), essential footnotes, introductory parts and statements or the bibliography and index.

The second part is an oral examination ( viva voce ).

Supervision and Support 

Students will be supervised by a supervisory team. Where appropriate, staff from Colleges/Schools other than the ‘home’ College/School (other Colleges/Schools) within the University will contribute to cognate research areas. There may also be supervisors from an industrial partner.

The Primary/First Supervisor will normally be the main contact throughout the student journey and will have overall responsibility for academic supervision. The academic input of the Secondary Supervisor will vary from case to case. The principal role of the Secondary Supervisor is often as a first port of call if the Primary/First Supervisor becomes unavailable. The supervisory team may also include a supervisor from industry or a specific area of professional practice to support the research. External supervisors may also be drawn from other Universities.

The primary supervisor will provide pastoral support. If necessary the primary supervisor will refer the student to other sources of support (e.g. Wellbeing, Disability, Money Advice, IT, Library, Students’ Union, Academic Services, Student Support Services, Careers Centre).

Progression Monitoring

Progress will be monitored in accordance with Swansea University regulations. During the course of the programme, the student is expected to meet regularly with their supervisors, and at most meetings it is likely that the student’s progress will be monitored in an informal manner in addition to attendance checks. Details of the meetings should ideally be recorded on the on-line system. A minimum of four formal supervision meetings is required each year, two of which will be reported to the Postgraduate Progression and Awards Board. During these supervisory meetings the student’s progress is discussed and formally recorded on the on-line system.

The University offers training and development for Doctoral Researchers and supervisors.

Swansea University’s Postgraduate Research Training Framework is structured into sections, to enable students to navigate and determine appropriate courses aligned to both their interest and their candidature stage. 

There is a training framework including for example areas of Managing Information and Data, Presentation and Public Engagement, Leadership and working with others, Safety Integrity and Ethics, Impact and Commercialisation and Teaching and Demonstrating. There is also range of support in areas such as training needs, literature searching, conducting research, writing up research, teaching, applying for grants and awards, communicating research and future careers.

A range of research seminars and skills development sessions are provided within the College and across the University. These are scheduled to keep the student in touch with a broader range of material than their own research topic, to stimulate ideas in discussion with others, and to give them opportunities to such as defending their own thesis orally, and to identify potential criticisms. Additionally, the College is developing a research culture that will align with the University vision and will link with key initiatives delivered under the auspices of the University’s Academies.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding the specifics of your dissertation topic and showcasing its relevance to your field.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)

In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organizational structure of your thesis or dissertation. This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.

While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.

  • Working Title
  • “Elevator pitch” of your work (often written last).
  • Introduce your area of study, sharing details about your research question, problem statement , and hypotheses . Situate your research within an existing paradigm or conceptual or theoretical framework .
  • Subdivide as you see fit into main topics and sub-topics.
  • Describe your research methods (e.g., your scope , population , and data collection ).
  • Present your research findings and share about your data analysis methods.
  • Answer the research question in a concise way.
  • Interpret your findings, discuss potential limitations of your own research and speculate about future implications or related opportunities.

Chapter outline example American English

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilizing some of the alternative constructions presented below.

Example 1: Passive construction

The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.

Example 2: IS-AV construction

You can also present your information using the “IS-AV” (inanimate subject with an active verb ) construction.

A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.

Example 3: The “I” construction

Another option is to use the “I” construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.

Example 4: Mix-and-match

To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and “I” construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.

As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as “discuss,” “present,” “prove,” or “show.” Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

The objective of the M.A. program in English and African American literature is to provide in-depth training in English Education; English, American and African American literature; folklore and language. The department introduces students to a diverse range of graduate-level work, including critical theory, graduate literary studies, and contemporary practices in grammar and rhetoric. Students’ exposure to various genres and works of African American, American and English literatures will provide a substantial foundation for continued study at the doctoral level as well as preparation for various professional and teaching contexts. The program provides students the opportunity to explore critical theories and hone their critical reading, thinking and writing skills. It also offers a solid foundation for those who may choose to seek a Ph.D. in such disciplines as African American, Comparative, and English Literatures as well as African American, Africana, Cultural, Ethnic, Gender, Subaltern and Women’s Studies.

  • Writing Sample (undergraduate research paper, literary analysis, etc.)
