Doctoral Degrees
All candidates for the Ed.D., Ed.D.C.T., or Ph.D. degrees are expected to demonstrate both mathematics and mathematics education competencies through a series of certification examinations taken upon the completion of 60 graduate points. Certification examinations test the student’s knowledge of current research and theory in mathematics education and mathematics content. Examinations are offered once in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Courses recommended as preparation for the examinations in mathematics education include MSTM 6037, MSTM 4019, and other mathematics education courses; Courses recommended as preparation for the examinations in mathematics are 6000- level mathematics content courses.
Students must demonstrate acceptable proficiency in at least three of the following six mathematics content areas: algebra, analysis, discrete mathematics, foundations of mathematics, geometry and topology, and probability and statistics. Students may sit for the examination in mathematics content during the regular certification examination times. Alternatively, they may register for advanced content courses and, with permission of the program, sit for the content area certification examination upon completion of the course. Incoming doctoral candidates should register for MSTM 6037 Professional Seminar in Mathematics during the first year of doctoral studies.
Doctoral students whose dissertations require statistical analysis should include appropriate statistics courses in their programs. These points can be included either in the mathematics/mathematics education requirement or can be taken as research electives.
Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree emphasizes research competencies. The degree program requires a scholarly dissertation of intellectual merit and sound research methodology. Dissertation research may include analytical studies of the process of teaching or experimental studies of the teaching-learning process, including studies of verbal learning and laboratory practice or historical studies.
Candidates are encouraged to develop an association with a faculty member early in their studies to identify a problem area of mutual interest to plan a course of studies that leads to the competencies needed to complete dissertation research and prepare for a professional role. Further details are available in the brochures on doctoral studies and in the general descriptions of doctoral programs available from the Office of Doctoral Studies (ODS).
A program of study for the Doctor of Philosophy degree must include at least 45 points taken under Teachers College registration. In order to permit the acquisition of broad and basic scholarship, each program of study should include at least 60 points in mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and computing. At least 35 points should be in advanced courses – including research courses (MSTM 6500 or 6501 and MSTM 7500). (Any Teachers College course at the 6000 level or above, any Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences course with a “G” prefix, any “W” course numbered above 4000, or any transferred course with a graduate-level prerequisite will be considered an advanced course.) Further, 15 points in the philosophical, psychological, and curricular foundations of education must be included in every Ph.D. degree program. Students whose dissertations require statistical analysis should include appropriate statistics courses in their programs. These points can be included either in the mathematics/mathematics education requirement or can be taken as research electives.
Candidates for the Ph.D. degree are required to demonstrate competency in two languages chosen from among French, German, and Russian. Students who require other languages for the preparation of their dissertation may petition the program to request one substitution. Students in mathematics may not use computer languages or statistics to satisfy the language requirement.
The Ph.D. dissertation is a scholarly study contributing new theoretical knowledge to the field and should be planned early in the program when sufficient advanced courses have been completed to permit the candidate to enroll in relevant research courses. Ph.D. dissertations in mathematics education should be (1) experimental studies in learning, (2) analytical studies in policy theory in mathematics education, or (3) other scholarly investigations of problems and issues of broad significance in the field.
The website of the Program offers a list of Topic study groups which doctoral students are recommended to join.

This chapter presents a critical analysis of educational research as reflected in doctoral dissertations completed during the past decade in mathematics education in the Philippines. It analyzes the published dissertations with respect to the topics in the discipline they address, the targeted participants in terms of educational level and roles of stakeholders and theoretical frameworks used to construct the research. The analysis revealed a strong emphasis on research on teaching educational goals of mathematics, teacher development, and the use of technology in teaching. The less traversed areas were the research on social goals of education, the relationship of mathematics teaching and learning in other disciplines, the equity in terms of language and access to quality mathematics education due to poverty, elementary and kindergarten mathematics, assessment, technology used in informal settings, and research areas that are informed by critical and sociopolitical perspectives. The analysis calls for the need for better articulation of the role of the theory in a dissertation and a greater diversification of theoretical stances, in particular the critical and sociopolitical perspectives that remain underutilized.

From an inclusive perspective in mathematics education, the aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to gain profound knowledge of didactical and relational aspects of mathematics teaching concerning students’ participation in mathematics education. The overarching research questions delve into methodological and theoretical aspects that enable the study of enacted mathematical and relational knowing of teachers, as well as how mathematical and relational knowing supports inclusion in mathematics for students. Three studies were conducted. The first study investigated the possibilities of various data collection methods to document mathematics teachers’ reflections on mathematical and relational knowing in mathematics education. The second study aimed to gain theoretical and empirical insights into teachers’ mathematical and relational knowing, as well as into students’ participation in mathematics. The third study examined earlier research regarding how co-teaching organized mathematics education can contribute to inclusion.
These three studies generated four publications that answered the overarching research questions. The methodological and theoretical findings emphasize the complexity involved in exploring inclusive mathematics education. Understanding mathematical and relational knowing of teachers requires a broad conceptual framework that considers how these forms of knowing come into play when teaching. The coordinated conceptual frameworks used have core elements connected to the situated nature of inclusive mathematics education. These frameworks are based on contextual factors that focus on how and when teaching materials, mathematical examples and connections are used. They also consider the particular teacher-student interactions that occur in the moments of teaching. Hence, from a special didactic perspective, it is essential to emphasize not only the ‘what, ‘how,’ and ‘why’, but also the ‘when’ question, considering both mathematical and relational knowing in the context of inclusion in mathematics.
Furthermore, findings show that if students are to be didactically included, meaning they participate in mathematics within the community of classroom mathematics, it appears important for teachers to enact mathematical and relational knowing simultaneously, whether distributed between one or two teachers in a co-teaching setting. Moreover, co-teaching does not automatically lead to didactical inclusion. However, if all students’ learning is the point of departure and the teachers, together or individually, enact mathematical and relational knowing, this can contribute to didactical inclusion.

Math and Science awards recognize teaching, research excellence
Tuesday, June 18, 2024 | by Jocelyn Titone
On the first day he lectured at Brock University, Ali Emami caught himself searching for a seat among the students instead of heading to the front of the auditorium to teach the course.
Having recently completed his PhD, he felt more like a fellow learner than the educator.
The moment was the catalyst for a vow he made to approach teaching with passion, relevance and a student-like curiosity for learning. He believes that philosophy led him to receiving the 2024 Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences (FMS) Excellence in Teaching Award less than three years later.
“As I get older, I’ll naturally relate less to the students, but I’ll never forget that I belong there in the auditorium with them,” says the Assistant Professor of Computer Science. “My students often say it’s as if I’m really on their side. I stop myself in the middle of my lecture and metaphorically go and sit with them to see the lecture through their eyes. I gauge their reactions, thoughts and feelings and ask them for their opinions.”
Emami fell in love with natural language processing during his PhD studies but felt he had limited opportunities as a student to share his enthusiasm. As a professor, he can passionately highlight his research interests, which focus on the development of intelligent machines for everyday use. He hopes to enhance large language models for better communication, reasoning and practical application, ensuring they are trustworthy and effective.
While he initially held back from referencing his research in his lectures, the feedback Emami received from students affirmed that his enthusiasm inspires them to be passionate about their own aspirations, even if they aren’t directly connected.
“We shouldn’t be afraid of being proud and passionate about our field, thinking it’s not relevant to others, because the common denominator we share is our passion for our own work and interests,” he says.
Emami also incorporates different teaching methods into his courses. In Internet Technologies (COSC 2P89) for example, he supplements theoretical lessons by demonstrating code in real time on a projected screen and leads an improv-like coding session every other week in which students take turns trying to solve a coding problem with each adding on to the previous student’s work.
“It helps students to develop the muscle memory needed for coding,” he says. “And I think they like the challenge and uncertainty of it. We don’t always solve the problem. But we’re all working on it together and encouraging each other, which makes the experience much more engaging.”
Also recognized this year is Professor of Chemistry Tony Yan, who received the 2024 FMS Research Excellence Award.
Tony Yan, Professor of Chemistry, is the recipient of the 2024 Faculty of Mathematics and Science Research Excellence Award.
As a synthetic organic chemist, Yan focuses his research on the chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics of nucleic acids, which are biomolecules that are crucial in all living organisms. His work involves chemically modifying nucleic acids to introduce what is not natural to them to better understand their structures and how they function in the biological system.
Some of his work has involved chemically synthesizing a type of nucleic acid called cyclic dinucleotides to examine their ability to augment immune responses in mammalian species.
“The compounds turned out to be outstanding adjuvants for vaccines that are given mucosally — administered through nasal spray or orally — instead of through injections,” he says. “Historically, it has been really challenging to induce immune response mucosally with vaccines without the use of killed or attenuated pathogens.”
More recently, Yan has become interested in understanding how nucleic acids behave in conditions that represent those typically found in biological systems rather than the “overly simplified diluted conditions” he says are used in experiments. With 30 to 40 per cent of cell’s cytoplasmic fluid occupied by molecules, he says the environment in cells is much more “crowded” than the conditions used in most investigations.
Yan says this research could have real-world implications, potentially impacting how medicinal chemistry is conducted and how pharmaceutical companies can improve the way they identify new drug candidates.
“The drug discovery process has become so expensive, and the failure rates are so high, that the industry is hoping for different ways to look at this process,” he says. “An understanding of the differences in the structures and properties of biomolecules in diluted and crowded conditions offers the potential to optimize the drug discovery process where the conditions more accurately represent what actually happens in the cellular environment where these drugs operate.”
