Michener Center for Writers

Michener Center for Writers

Mfa in writing.

The Michener Center for Writers is the only Creative Writing M.F.A. program in the world that provides full and equal funding to every writer—yet it is our extraordinary faculty and sense of community that most distinguishes us. Our program is a three-year, fully-funded residency M.F.A. with a unique multi-disciplinary focus. Writers apply and are admitted in a primary genre—fiction, poetry, playwriting or screenwriting—and study in both their primary and a secondary genre(s). There are no teaching duties, a luxury that allows our Fellows to commit themselves fully to their writing. And because only twelve writers are admitted each year, our faculty can devote ample time and energy to every writer. With unparalleled support and the deeply held belief that literary art matters now more than ever, the Michener Center offers writers 3 years of unencumbered space to make the work that only they can make.

The Michener Center aims to be a welcoming, inspiring, and invigorating community where writers feel safe and supported to take chances on the page. We are extremely proud that there is no hierarchy here—all students receive equal funding—and we firmly believe that our egalitarian approach fosters a higher level of work that more competitive environments suppress.

Our MFA candidates have come from places as varied as western India, South Korea, eastern Europe, and northern Idaho. Their backgrounds and experiences lend to the pages they produce, which are unique and uniquely vital. We aren’t seeking writers of any particular aesthetic, but rather we are looking for writers whose work is distinct, urgent, and arresting.

Each year, we receive hundreds of applications for twelve seats in the cohort. We accept only full-time, in-residence candidates for the three-year program. There is no low-residency or part-time option.

Applicants must meet the UT Graduate School’s minimum requirements for consideration, which include completion of a Bachelor’s Degree prior to enrollment. The Michener Center no longer requires GRE scores.

James Michener was the Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of over 40 books, including Texas , Hawaii , and Tales of the South Pacific . In his final years, he and his wife, Mari Yoriko Sabusawa, moved to Austin, TX, where they endowed the Texas Center for Writers, a three-year MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Texas. The first cohort of Michener Fellows graduated in 1996. After Mr. Michener’s death in 1997, the Center was renamed in his honor.

To ensure both continuity and fresh perspectives, the Michener Center faculty is built with fixed and moving parts. Writers from UT’s departments of English, Theatre and Dance, and Radio-Television-Film comprise our Resident Faculty, and each year we also welcome an exciting roster of distinguished Visiting Faculty. That our faculty members—resident and visiting—are as passionate about their teaching as they are their writing is of the utmost importance. Like our students, our faculty afford the program a wealth of varied experience, an abiding sense of shared enterprise, and deep commitment to the making of literary art. For more on our outstanding faculty in each genre, visit our Faculty page .

About our Classes

WLT online classes feature a variety of topics taught by outstanding instructors . These live webinars (on Zoom) offer something of interest for all writers – from novice to professional. With some exceptions, classes are usually three hours in length and taught by a single instructor on a specific craft of writing or business of publishing topic .

Our classes offer a combination of lecture and practical exercises , determined by the individual instructor, on focused aspects of the craft and business of writing. Your fellow participants will come from a range of writing experience, from beginners to people with MFA degrees and published books. WLT instructors, participants, and administrators all work together to create a welcoming, supportive environment .

If you haven’t taken a class with us in recent years, feel free to email the WLT staff at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss whether our programming is the right fit for your needs.

You should expect 2-2.5 hours of direct teaching and 30 minutes of Q&A (for three hours total). If you need to leave the class early or can’t attend the class on that date, all registrants will have access to the recording for one week after the class date. No microphone or camera required, just an Internet connection capable of streaming video. All online classes are hosted on Zoom.

(Updates usually only take a few minutes, but you don’t want to wait until the beginning of class.) Questions? Email us at [email protected] .

WLT hosts all online classes on Zoom.

The links to the Zoom webinar are sent out a few days before the class date. Below is more information on using Zoom, as well as some useful tips for the best online class experience.

If you have never taken an online class with us, you may need to download the Zoom app onto your device if you have not already. You can download the Zoom app here . You will not need to log in to the app. You only need to download it and then click on the class link emailed to you.

If you log in early, you will not see any class info. The webinar will not start until the instructor has logged in.

When you click the class link, you will be asked for a screen name and email address. The screen name is simply the name you would like to be known by during the class. Once logged in, you can move your mouse to the bottom of the screen to pull up different options, one being the chat box. When you type a message, make sure it is sent to everyone (not just the panelists).

For troubleshooting issues, please take a look at Zoom’s FAQ page here .

Lastly, if you are ever missing class or Zoom information, please check your spam folder first. Our emails tend to go to spam if you’ve never been emailed by us before! If you still can’t find the information you’re looking for, email WLT Staff here   .

Certificate in the college of liberal arts.

Certificate Creative Writing

The Creative Writing Certificate is intended for any university student interested in advanced study of creative writing, both as reader and as writer.

The certificate program is a small one: approximately 60 students will be admitted each year.

How to Declare

Those who plan to pursue the certificate should begin the program by the fall of the junior year; applications are accepted each spring, beginning in March. The primary criteria for admission are UT-Austin GPA and a student’s progress toward degree, with additional consideration given to writing ability. Generally, admitted students have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA. The online application will remain open from March 1 through July. Students who apply prior to March 21 will be notified by April 1. All other students will be notified throughout the spring and summer, no later than August 1. The application requires a short personal statement (approximately one paragraph) about your interest in the program, as well as a writing sample (any genre, maximum of three double-spaced pages).

Experimental Practice

The two-year Creative Writing MFA at CalArts was designed to be rigorous and wild, erasing the division between “creative” and “critical.” Here, writing is understood as an art form best practiced alongside the other arts, and students benefit from having access to the CalArts community of artists as their peers and fellow travelers.

MFA Creative Writing

The CalArts MFA in Creative Writing combines a dedication to experimental practice with a resolutely non-genre tracking curriculum. These commitments are intertwined: Our MFA program uniquely allows our students to channel ideas through whichever genre the work takes you—including into hybrid genre forms of your own.

Let’s connect

Our dedication to a resolutely non-genre-tracking curriculum emerges from CalArts’ foundational commitment to experimentation and interdisciplinarity. Students who come to our program regularly engage in substantial projects in multiple genres across their coursework and beyond. As a Creative Writing MFA student, you’ll design your own path through our curriculum, invoking questions of genre and practice to inform your work as it develops. This structure gives special import to the work you create, with guidance and support from your faculty mentor, other faculty, and peers throughout your time in the program. Meeting with your mentor multiple times each semester, you’ll discuss your plan of study, creative work, and larger questions related to a life in writing and the interconnectedness of writing, other art forms, and intellectual endeavors. Our commitment to the mentor relationship is foundational to the pedagogy of CalArts.

Graduate students in the Creative Writing MFA are encouraged to situate their creative practice in a critical context—to engage with the history, theory, and politics of contemporary writing, and to deeply contemplate what and why they write. The program offers the chance to further develop both your craft and your knowledge base, and to attend workshops combining attentive critique of student work with discussion of readings on and in the various genres—or on special topics particularly relevant to writing today.

Our program proudly grounds its dedication to experimentation in traditions beyond purely formalist and Eurocentric models of the avant-garde, embracing speculative, performative, theoretical, divinatory, shamanistic, and other decolonizing modes of practice. At CalArts, realist literary fiction hangs out with speculative fiction and horror, lyric poetry meets documentary modes, and the essay mingles with memoir, performance, auto-theory, and hybrid forms.

Our core courses attend closely to questions of form and aesthetics, as well as to the historical and critical contexts of literary work. Most classes combine workshopping of student-generated work with discussion of assigned texts. While not all classes are offered every year, students choose from a wide selection of courses throughout the two-year program, honing individual visions and practices while experimenting with new forms and subjects. Creative Writing students also benefit from being able to take courses for elective credit in the MA Aesthetics and Politics program, as well as other MFA-level courses throughout the Institute.

Admission requirements

To be considered for the MFA Creative Writing program, you must complete the application process and all program-specific requirements, including a portfolio of representative work, an artist statement, and two letters of recommendation. Before applying, be sure to familiarize yourself with the detailed application requirements and resources available to assist you in this important process.

Application requirements

Degree requirements

The CalArts MFA Creative Writing is unique in the field for the way it combines a dedication to experimental practice and a resolutely non-genre tracking curriculum. Students in Creative Writing design their own path through our curriculum, in consultation with their faculty mentor, engaging with what questions of genre and practice inform their work as it develops.

MFA Creative Writing academic requirements

While our program is non-tracking we do offer four optional emphases that help guide our students through our curriculum and the course offerings of other schools and programs in the Institute. We call these emphases our Concentrations . These non-required Concentrations are Image + Text , Writing and Performativity , Writing and its Publics and Documentary Strategies . Image + Text traces the relationship of the written word and the visual image, including the cinematic, the static image, and the materiality of language. Writing and Performativity offers students an array of courses focused on the creative and critical practices of performative writing. Writing and Its Publics deals with the public face of writing, be it publishing, community-based work, or writing for various art audiences, while Documentary Strategies takes on a wide array of artistic engagements with documentation, witnessing, and archives of all kinds. Students whose work and interests closely engage one of these four areas can formalize that engagement by declaring an official Concentration, which may be advantageous in their professional lives after the MFA.

Interdisciplinary opportunities

In addition to CalArts’ naturally collaborative atmosphere, the Institute provides several programs of study that can be pursued concurrently with a student’s chosen metier, such as a concentration in Arts Education or Integrated Media.

Read about author Henry Hoke’s journey after graduating from the Creative Writing MFA, and how his time at CalArts has influenced his genre-spanning creative process. “It just became really exciting for me to keep separate projects going all at once,” he explains, “because that’s what was encouraged in each professor’s course.”

Alumni interview

Shortly after the publication of his fifth book, Under the Eye of Power, in 2023, Creative Writing alum Colin Dickey (MFA 01) sat for an interview with The Sun’s David Mahaffey. “A lot of our anxiety around chaos and disorder is fundamentally tied to our denial of death,” he said. “I had a real terror of death for the longest time, and that’s part of why I started writing about ghosts: to lessen that anxiety.”
