College Essay: The Day I Saved My Brother

Flashing in front of me were two worlds that would soon come shattering into millions of pieces at any second: mine and his. Even though I am younger than my brother, he depends on me because he is disabled. Back in Thailand when my brother was still just a couple months old, he became really ill. Clueless, my parents suggested they should take my brother to the hospital, hoping doctors could help save their child. Unfortunately, taking my brother to the hospital was a big mistake. Back then, physicians lacked the skills to distinguish the difference between what kinds of medications and shots were for infants and adults. My brother was born a healthy baby, but, after receiving bad care from the physician, he was left permanently physically and mentally disabled and part of his life was taken away.

At the age of 16, I was chosen to be in charge of nine kids while my parents were out of the house. The kids ranged in age from my youngest brother who was 9 months old to my older brother who was 19. I felt a lot of pressure because of the big responsibility on my shoulders. I gave my older brother a snack and then turned my attention to my baby brother for just a second. The moment I diverted my attention back to my older brother, I noticed his face was desperate for attention and turning purple. His eyes glistened with tears; he was in desperate need of air. I swiftly ran toward him. I shouted at my sisters and cousins for help, while I made my way behind my brother. I lifted him with all my might and settled him onto my lap. All I could think was to do the Heimlich maneuver, which I learned from watching YouTube videos. I didn’t know if I was doing it correctly, if I would injure him internally, or if I was wasting time.

My older, disabled brother depends on me to take care of him, and I had failed him.

Once my sisters and cousins made their way up, I shouted for my cousin to grab water. For a split second I remembered what my grandma said to my mom: “Never drink water if you feel like food isn’t going down.” Loudly, I shouted at my cousin to abandon the water. I noticed my sisters and cousins were panicking, and I too was in the mode of a disoriented emotional breakdown. However, as the oldest one there, I had to hold back from letting my emotions loose and focus on keeping everyone from panicking. My emotional distress was high. It was between life and death.

Without pausing to catch my breath due to exhaustion I continued to perform the technique. It seemed endless. Surprisingly my sister shouted, “He got it out!” with strands of tears streaming down her cheeks alongside my brother, too. There ,in the palm of her hands sat the big piece of bagel that was lodged in my brother’s throat moments ago. I finally took one big relieving breath after checking the tone of my brother’s face, let that ball of emotion out, and bawled like a baby.

After coming face-to-face with the challenge of saving someone so dear to me, I realized I am confident working my way through decisions under pressure. In the future, when I’m in college or at my professional job or with my friends and family, I know I can tame challenges when I’m faced with them. Because of the experience I had, I know I can rely on my instinct when making decisions for myself or for others. The situation helped naturally unfold my individual independent strength in self-trust to build a bridge between my goals and my motivation.

Alexandra remembers the first time her parents took her baby brother home. She then details how her brother helped her connect with others, know how to compromise, and love someone else. Over the years, she realized that everything he taught her made her life more enjoyable. 

“I used to think of disappointment as losing one of my Barbie dresses… But I realized that disappointment can stem from the person you love the most… I don’t dislike my little brother and sister till this day. They’re still my little superstars and I hope I can be a good enough big sister to them.”

Mc Collum starts her essay by narrating how much she wants to have a sibling. But, as an only child, she finds it lonely and boring. She then recounts the events of when her dad introduced her little brother to her as a surprise. She follows it by describing her mixed feelings about meeting the baby, mainly because her father already had another child with another woman. 

Instead of focusing on her little brother, she shares her disappointment with her father. It took her some time, but she now accepts her younger siblings because they aren’t at fault for what their father did. Mc Collum concludes her essay by stating that she doesn’t want to be a victim and does her best to overcome her frustration with her father.

“For me, losing my brother almost three years ago still saddens me… Losing someone is hard to accept, remembering him is easy, I do it everyday.”

The writer shares her pain at how she lost her brother, best friend, and right hand due to an overdose. She tells of how much they spent time together and how he was always there to protect her.

She further explains how hard it is to move on when she remembers him every day and still wishes he was there with her. Her brother’s death made her try to make the best of everything and trust God. 

“Having a twin brother is a blessing and a curse. He is always there for me and I always have a friend to talk to, but a majority of the time he pushes my buttons invades my personal space and gets on my nerves.”

Peretti discusses his thoughts on how he initially loved being a twin until it gradually took away his character because no one could tell him apart from his brother. It took him a while to realize that people only react the way they do because they don’t understand what he feels. They don’t have a twin, after all.

Peretti then strived to be a better person and embraced being a twin. He ends the essay by realizing his struggles with his brother made him the best version of himself.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

Your Best College Essay

What's the College Essay?

When we say “The College Essay” (capitalization for emphasis – say it out loud with the capitals and you’ll know what we mean) we’re talking about the 550-650 word essay required by most colleges and universities. Prompts for this essay can be found on the college’s website, the Common Application, or the Coalition Application. We’re not talking about the many smaller supplemental essays you might need to write in order to apply to college. Not all institutions require the essay, but most colleges and universities that are at least semi-selective do.

How do I get started?

Look for the prompts on whatever application you’re using to apply to schools (almost all of the time – with a few notable exceptions – this is the Common Application). If one of them calls out to you, awesome! You can jump right in and start to brainstorm. If none of them are giving you the right vibes, don’t worry. They’re so broad that almost anything you write can fit into one of the prompts after you’re done. Working backwards like this is totally fine and can be really useful!

What if I have writer's block?

You aren’t alone. Staring at a blank Google Doc and thinking about how this is the one chance to tell an admissions officer your story can make you freeze. Thinking about some of these questions might help you find the right topic:

• What is something about you that people have pointed out as distinctive?
• If you had to pick three words to describe yourself, what would they be? What are things you’ve done that demonstrate these qualities?
• What’s something about you that has changed over your years in high school? How or why did it change?
• What’s something you like most about yourself?
• What’s something you love so much that you lose track of the rest of the world while you do it?

If you’re still stuck on a topic, ask your family members, friends, or other trusted adults: what’s something they always think about when they think about you? What’s something they think you should be proud of? They might help you find something about yourself that you wouldn’t have surfaced on your own.  

How do I grab my reader's attention?

It’s no secret that admissions officers are reading dozens – and sometimes hundreds – of essays every day. That can feel like a lot of pressure to stand out. But if you try to write the most unique essay in the world, it might end up seeming forced if it’s not genuinely you. So, what’s there to do? Our advice: start your essay with a story. Tell the reader about something you’ve done, complete with sensory details, and maybe even dialogue. Then, in the second paragraph, back up and tell us why this story is important and what it tells them about you and the theme of the essay.

THE WORD LIMIT IS SO LIMITING. HOW DO I TELL A COLLEGE MY WHOLE LIFE STORY IN 650 WORDS?

Don’t! Don’t try to tell an admissions officer about everything you’ve loved and done since you were a child. Instead, pick one or two things about yourself that you’re hoping to get across and stick to those. They’ll see the rest on the activities section of your application.

I'M STUCK ON THE CONCLUSION. HELP?

If you can’t think of another way to end the essay, talk about how the qualities you’ve discussed in your essays have prepared you for college. Try to wrap up with a sentence that refers back to the story you told in your first paragraph, if you took that route.

SHOULD I PROOFREAD MY ESSAY?

YES, proofread the essay, and have a trusted adult proofread it as well. Know that any suggestions they give you are coming from a good place, but make sure they aren’t writing your essay for you or putting it into their own voice. Admissions officers want to hear the voice of you, the applicant. Before you submit your essay anywhere, our number one advice is to read it out loud to yourself. When you read out loud you’ll catch small errors you may not have noticed before, and hear sentences that aren’t quite right.

ANY OTHER ADVICE?

Be yourself. If you’re not a naturally serious person, don’t force formality. If you’re the comedian in your friend group, go ahead and be funny. But ultimately, write as your authentic (and grammatically correct) self and trust the process.

THE “I SHOT MY BROTHER” COLLEGE ESSAY

From page 54 of the maroon notebook sitting on my mahogany desk:

“Then Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth and whoever finds me will kill me.” – Genesis 4:13

Here is a secret that no one in my family knows: I shot my brother when I was six. Luckily, it was a BB gun. But to this day, my older brother Jonathan does not know who shot him. And I have finally promised myself to confess this eleven year old secret to him after I write this essay.

The truth is, I was always jealous of my brother. Our grandparents, with whom we lived as children in Daegu, a rural city in South Korea, showered my brother with endless accolades: he was bright, athletic, and charismatic.

“Why can’t you be more like Jon?” my grandmother used to nag, pointing at me with a carrot stick. To me, Jon was just cocky. He would scoff at me when he would beat me in basketball, and when he brought home his painting of Bambi with the teacher’s sticker “Awesome!” on top, he would make several copies of it and showcase them on the refrigerator door. But I retreated to my desk where a pile of “Please draw this again and bring it to me tomorrow” papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. Later, I even refused to attend the same elementary school and wouldn’t even eat meals with him.

Deep down I knew I had to get the chip off my shoulder. But I didn’t know how.

That is, until March 11th, 2001.

That day around six o’clock, juvenile combatants appeared in Kyung Mountain for their weekly battle, with cheeks smeared in mud and empty BB guns in their hands. The Korean War game was simple: to kill your opponent you had to shout “pow!” before he did. Once we situated ourselves, our captain blew the pinkie whistle and the war began. My friend Min-young and I hid behind a willow tree, eagerly awaiting our orders.

Beside us, our comrades were dying, each falling to the ground crying in “agony,” their hands clasping their “wounds.” Suddenly a wish for heroism surged within me: I grabbed Min-young’s arms and rushed towards the enemies’ headquarters, disobeying our orders to remain sentry duty. To tip the tide of the war, I had to kill their captain. We infiltrated the enemy lines, narrowly dodging each attack. We then cleared the pillars of asparagus ferns until the Captain’s lair came into view. I quickly pulled my clueless friend back into the bush.

Hearing us, the alarmed captain turned around: It was my brother.

He saw Min-young’s right arm sticking out from the bush and hurled a “grenade,” (a rock), bruising his arm.

“That’s not fair!” I roared in the loudest and most unrecognizable voice I could manage.

Startled, the Captain and his generals abandoned their post. Vengeance replaced my wish for heroism and I took off after the fleeing perpetrator. Streams of sweat ran down my face and I pursued him for several minutes until suddenly I was arrested by a small, yellow sign that read in Korean: DO NOT TRESPASS: Boar Traps Ahead. (Two summers ago, my five year old cousin, who insisted on joining the ranks, had wandered off-course during the battle; we found him at the bottom of a 20 ft deep pit with a deep gash in his forehead and shirt soaked in blood) “Hey, stop!” I shouted, heart pounding. “STOP!” My mind froze. My eyes just gazed at the fleeing object; what should I do?

I looked on as my shivering hand reached for the canister of BBs. The next second, I heard two shots followed by a cry. I opened my eyes just enough to see two village men carrying my brother away from the warning sign. I turned around, hurled my BB gun into the nearby Kyung Creek and ran home as fast as I could.

Days passed. My brother and I did not talk about the incident.

‘Maybe he knew it was me,’ I thought in fear as I tried to eavesdrop on his conversation with grandpa one day. When the door suddenly opened, I blurted, “Is anything wrong?”

“Nothing,” he said pushing past me, “Just a rough sleep.”

But in the next few weeks, something was happening inside me.

All the jealousy and anger I’d once felt had been replaced by a new feeling: guilt.

That night when my brother was gone I went to a local store and bought a piece of chocolate taffy, his favorite. I returned home and placed it on my brother’s bed with a note attached: “Love, Grandma.”

Several days later, I secretly went into his room and folded his unkempt pajamas.

Then, other things began to change. We began sharing clothes (something we had never done), started watching Pokémon episodes together, and then, on his ninth birthday, I did something with Jon that I hadn’t done in six years: I ate dinner with him. I even ate fishcakes, which he loved but I hated. And I didn’t complain.

Today, my brother is one of my closest friends. Every week I accompany him to Carlson Hospital where he receives treatment for his obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. While in the waiting room, we play a noisy game of Zenga, comment on the Lakers’ performance or listen to the radio on the registrar’s desk.

Then, the door to the doctor’s office opens.

“Jonathan Lee, please come in.”

I tap his shoulder and whisper, “Rock it, bro.”

After he leaves, I take out my notebook and begin writing where I left off.

Beside me, the receptionist’s fingers hover over the radio in search of a new station, eventually settling on one. I hear LeAnn Rimes singing “Amazing Grace.” Her voice slowly rises over the noise of the bustling room.

“’Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved…”

Smiling, I open Jon’s Jansport backpack and neatly place this essay inside and a chocolate taffy with a note attached.

Twenty minutes have passed when the door abruptly opens.

“Guess what the doctor just said?” my brother cries, unable to hide his exhilaration.

I look up and I smile too.

'My brother went to college to be helped, but he ended up dying' – sister speaks as findings of contaminated blood inquiry are released

Former pupils of a boarding school where boys with haemophilia were infected with contaminated blood have said they were told to "carry on as normal" as their peers became sick.

One of those boys was Mark Payton, from the West Midlands, who died when he was 41 after being co-infected with both hepatitis C and HIV.

More than half of the boys treated for haemophilia at Lord Mayor Treloar College between the 1970s and 1980s are now dead.

Several pupils who attended the boarding school in Hampshire in the 1970s and 1980s were given treatment for haemophilia at an on-site NHS centre while receiving their education.

But it was later found that many pupils with the condition had been treated with plasma blood products which were infected with hepatitis and HIV.

Mark Payton's sister Janine Jones said her brother could not wait to get back to school after every holiday.

She spoke as the findings from an inquiry into the blood infection scandal were being released.

Ms Jones, from Coleshill, Warwickshire, said: "Mark moved to Treloar's in 1972 when he was 11.

"He was there until 1979, he actually stayed on, he loved it that much.

"He couldn't wait to get back there after breaks, he would be counting down the weeks to go back, he absolutely loved it.

"To be honest I'm glad he's not here to witness what we are seeing now – it would have really affected him."

The 59-year-old, whose brother was four years older than her, added: "My parents never got over it really, the fact that he was infected –they thought they were doing the best for him, sending him to Treloar's to get a decent education.

"He missed a lot of education, most of his schooling when he was small was done on the children's ward at the hospital in Birmingham.

"They really thought they were doing the best for him.

"Our parents have died in the last two years so I haven't got to tell them that.

"They were more than happy the inquiry was happening but unfortunately they have both passed away without any recognition for their son dying at all.

"I'm his only sibling so there is just me left to fight for him now."

Out of 122 boys treated at the school for haemophilia between 1970 and 1985, some 75 have since died.

Treloar School said in a statement: "This national scandal has devastated countless lives, including those of our former students and their families.

I gave my brother my college essay

Hi, So the thing is when i got into cornell 3 years ago , i posted my college essay on the internet . But now my brother is applying to it this year and i decided to give him the same exact essay i wrote . The problem is that im afraid that he gets caught or somebody use it . Do they really check the college essay in the internet ?? Im really confused rn. Pls help.

But the answer would be yes, your brother (and you) will definitely get caught.

Your brother will be denied and you will be expelled.

I think that it is VERY likely that they will catch this. He will be rejected outright (regardless of how good his application is otherwise). You are at considerable risk of getting in trouble also.

You need to make sure that he does not use it.

Tell your brother to write his own essay. Period. End of story.

You probably won’t get expelled (they can’t explicitly prove you were involved in this, for all they know your brother found your essay and used it), but if your brother gets caught he will be rejected.

It is my understanding that some if not all colleges will use the plagiarize checker and will easily detect anything that was posted somewhere online as well as in print. Since your essay was online, whether it’s your brother or anyone else uses your essay will get caught.
