Our market research shows that these are the customer groups that are most likely to buy gourmet coffee products. Since gourmet coffee consumption is universal across different income categories and mostly depends on the level of higher education, proximity to the University of Oregon campus will provide access to the targeted customer audience.

Funding for the company comes from two major sources–owners’ investments and bank loans. Two major owners, Arthur Garfield and James Polk, have contributed $70,000 and $30,00 respectively. All other investors have contributed $40,000, which brings the total investments to $140,000. The remaining $30,000 needed to cover the start-up expenses and assets came from the two bank loans–a one-year loan in the amount of $10,000 and a long-term (five years) loan of $20,000. Both loans were secured through the Bank of America. Thus, total start-up loss is assumed in the amount of $27,000.

The amounts show up in the balance sheet in the month prior to opening. The $140,000 investment shows up as Paid-in Capital. The $27,000 expenses show up as negative retained earnings. Assets and liabilities are there. This is all according to financial standards.

The lease contract has an option of renewal for three years at a fixed rate that Java Culture will execute depending on the financial strength of its business.

The floor plan will include a 200 square feet back office and a 2,300 square feet coffee bar, which will include a seating area with 15 tables, a kitchen, storage area and two bathrooms. The space in the coffee bar will be approximately distributed the following way–1,260 square feet (i.e., 55% of the total) for the seating area, 600 square feet (26%) for the production area, and the remaining 440 square feet (19%) for the customer service area.

This property is located in a commercial area within a walking distance from the University of Oregon campus on the corner of a major thoroughfare connecting affluent South Eugene neighborhood with the busy downtown commercial area. The commercially zoned premises have the necessary water and electricity hookups and will require only minor remodeling to accommodate the espresso bar, kitchen and storage area. The coffee bar’s open and clean interior design with modern wooden decor will convey the quality of the served beverages and snacks, and will be in-line with the establishment’s positioning as an eclectic place where people can relax and enjoy their cup of coffee. The clear window displays, through which passerby will be able to see customers enjoying their beverages, and outside electric signs will be aimed to grab the attention of the customer traffic.

Mr. Garfield has extensive business contacts in Oregon that he will leverage to help his new venture succeed. Mr. Polk has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the XYZ State University. For the last five years he has worked as a manager of DEF Ristorante, a successful Italian restaurant in Portland, OR. Under Mr. Polk’s management, the restaurant has consistently increased sales while maintaining a lower than average level of operating expenses.

Investors will not be involved into the daily management decisions at Java Culture. They will hire a professional manager who will oversee all the coffee bar operations. Three full-time baristas will be in charge of coffee preparation. They will hire two more part-time employees to fulfill the staffing needs. In the second and third year of operation will add additional employees if and when needed.

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is offering new perks for its hourly U.S. workers, ranging from a new bonus plan to opportunities to move into skilled trade jobs within the company.

The perks program announced Wednesday comes as the nation’s largest private employer says it’s seeing a decline in worker turnover. But Walmart, like other employers, faces a still-competitive labor market and increasing demands from its employees .

Walmart’s new bonus plan for eligible part-time and full-time U.S. store workers — including those in its pharmacy and Vision Centers — is based on their store’s performance, with the maximum bonus potential also tied to years of experience.

For example, a full-time worker who’s been with Walmart between one year and almost five years can earn a maximum bonus of $350 per year, while a 20-year full-time worker can earn a maximum bonus of $1,000, Walmart said. The plan will be available to 700,000 U.S. workers, the company said.

In January, Walmart announced its U.S. store managers would receive up to $20,000 in Walmart stock grants every year.

The company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, is also launching a training program for hourly workers in its U.S. stores and supply networks that will give them an opportunity to move into roles in facilities maintenance, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and automation. Walmart said it is looking to increase these skilled trades workers from 450 to roughly 2,000 in the next two years.

The jobs pay between $19 and $45 per hour, and workers will be paid during the training, the company said. Walmart’s average hourly wage is close to $18, an increase of 30% over the past five years. Walmart’s starting wages for U.S. workers range between $14 and $19 an hour.

The training program is expected to start with 100 workers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It is part of the Walmart Academy, one of the largest skill-development programs in the country.

Last month, Walmart reported another quarter of strong results as its low prices pull in shoppers scouring for discounts amid stubbornly high inflation .

Households with incomes exceeding $100,000 have been drawn to the retailer as it upgrades the quality of its items and focuses on providing more convenient ways to shop. Two-thirds of Walmart’s market share gains across the aisles are coming from that group, Walmart said.

Walmart said the skilled trades initiative is similar to a program it announced two years ago that gave employees who work in its distribution and fulfillment centers a chance to become certified Walmart truck drivers through a 12-week program taught by the company’s established drivers.

At the time, it said it was raising pay for its 12,000 truck drivers. The starting range for new drivers is now between $95,000 and $110,000 a year. The retailer said that $87,500 had been the average that new truck drivers could make in their first year.

Walmart spokeswoman Anne Hatfield said the trucker program has produced more than 500 new drivers since launching in the spring of 2022. That’s helped the company navigate an industrywide shortage of truck drivers.

Walmart has similar training and development programs for pharmacy tech and opticians.

Meanwhile, Walmart said Wednesday it is expanded the number of skills certificates available to help fast-track front-line workers into about 100,000 jobs that are higher paying and in demand at the company over the next three years.

In 2020, the company offered five skilled certificates. Now, there are 50. They include topics such as front-line manager leadership, people and business leadership, data science, software development and project management.

Employees can earn the certificates in four months, according to Lo Stomski, Walmart’s senior vice president and chief talent officer.

Walmart highlighted its worker training efforts as it prepares to hold two big events this week. A virtual shareholders’ meeting is set for Wednesday. On Friday, the company is holding a celebration of its workers at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to recognize Walmart’s employees from around the world as well as shareholders.

The Peanut Shoppe, downtown Columbus' oldest retailer, moving to new location under new owners

Downtown's iconic neon Mr. Peanut gets a new perch later this summer when the business he's advertised for 89 years moves to the other side of Capitol Square.

Mike and Pat Stone, who've owned the Peanut Shoppe since 1996 and have worked there even longer, signed papers Monday to sell their business to another couple who say its history was one of the things that attracted them to the venture.

"We just want to continue the tradition. It’s something families have shared for a long time," said Matt Powell, who grew up in Galion and remembers his grandparents bringing him to the Peanut Shoppe after yearly trips to the Ohio State Fair.

After 38 years as owners, the Stones close the shop at 21 E. State St. on July 27. (Note to customers: All outstanding Peanut Shoppe gift certificates must be used by that date.) Powell and his wife, Kate, take over as owners Aug. 1 and plan to reopen in mid-September at 4 E. Broad St. It will be the Peanut Shoppe's fifth Downtown location, all within 500 yards of each other, since its opening March 2, 1935.

In its multiple moves, Downtown's oldest continuously operating retail business has seen 18 Ohio governors, 14 national economic recessions and a city that has tripled in population as its central business district has contracted.

The Peanut Shoppe also has survived a peeved Planters executive who once demanded that the neon Mr. Peanut be removed. Pat Stone explained to her that the sign had been included in every sale of the business since Planters divested itself of stores nationwide in the 1960s.

"She harrumphed and said, 'OK, I guess you can use it,'" Pat Stone said. "Now I think they realize it’s good for their trademark. So they just kind of went away."

Nostalgic customers share Peanut Shoppe stories regularly, said Mike Stone. Common among them: A lot of people's parents used a stop inside for a bag of treats to reward well-behaved children after shopping trips to Lazarus .

The Peanut Shoppe has been part of the Stones' lives since 1972, when Mike took a $1.50-an-hour job dressing in a Mr. Peanut costume so he could earn enough money to take Pat on dates to Burger King. The couple who started dating as students at Whitehall-Yearling High School celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this fall with a vacation in Hawaii.

"I'm ready to have a weekend," Pat Stone said. "But when I get up in the morning, I don’t think, 'How soon can I quit doing this?' Sometimes I think, 'Oh God, what’s going to happen today?' That’s just the nature of owning a small business. But when you love your work, it’s not work."

She'll stay on for a while to help the Powells get on their feet as business owners.

It's more of a transition than Pat and Mike Stone were afforded. Although both were nuts-and-candy veterans by the time they bought the Peanut Shoppe (Pat had taken over as manager in 1990 when Mike enrolled in graduate school), the previous owner came in to sign the papers, hand in his keys and ask for a bag of caramel creams.

This time around, the new owners get Pat Stone's recipes for party mixes that used to sit on the bars at Cameron Mitchell Restaurants , such as the Avenue and M at Miranova. They'll get nut-roasting tricks and tips, like the little bit of butter she adds to make the salt stick better.

Some things never change

"You wouldn’t believe how well orange slices sell," Pat Stone said of the jelly-like candies best known for their place in grandma's candy dish. "I love orange slices," Matt Powell said, a good indication they'll stay for the Peanut Shoppe's next chapter.

Although volume is down considerably from the 800 pounds or more of peanuts in the shell that late longtime manager Kenneth Christensen estimated were roasted weekly in a 1978 Dispatch story, Pat Stone said peanuts are still the top seller at the store named for them. Cashews do well, too.

Dark chocolate is a trend the Stones have seen come during their years behind the Peanut Shoppe counter; from one dark-chocolate candy in 1996, more than half the candy case is now stocked with dark-chocolate confections.

Spearmint leaves, another jellied candy, are a trend they've seen go.

What's coming when Kate and Matt Powell take over? Matt said he'd like to try out a flavor of the month, something like everything-seasoned cashews or dill-pickle peanuts.

Both said they plan to keep their current jobs — Matt Powell is director of player development at Brookside Golf & Country Club , and Kate is property manager for a rental business — while pursuing a long-held dream of owning their own business.

"We met through golf, but we bonded over our love of food and drink, trying new cuisines and going to new places in Columbus," Kate Powell said. "We like that this is food-adjacent — not a restaurant or bar, but right next door to those concepts."

Pat Stone said she and her husband decided to sell the Peanut Shoppe because owners of the Fifth Third Center in which they operate want something new in the space and the couple didn't want to sign a long-term lease somewhere else.

"When I've told customers (about plans to sell), the one thing I've heard is, 'Are they going to change anything?'

I think they're going to keep what’s old that’s good, and they're going to add some new that’s good," Pat Stone said.

"That's the plan," Kate Powell said.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Top Kansas legislators have intensified efforts to woo the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs by offering to let the professional football franchise shape a plan for using state bonds to finance a new stadium in Kansas.

Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins and Senate President Ty Masterson said in a statement Tuesday that the Legislature would consider the proposal during a special session set to convene June 18. They invited the Chiefs “to weigh in on" the plan in a letter May 23 to Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, with the leaders released Tuesday.

Their actions came as a new Kansas nonprofit group, Scoop and Score, launched a campaign for bringing the Chiefs from Missouri to Kansas. The group started an online petition aimed at the Legislature, sent texts saying the Chiefs “deserve a permanent home in Kansas,” and registered 20 lobbyists to represent it at the Statehouse, including a former House speaker and some of the state's most prominent contract lobbyists.

Kansas officials saw an opening in early April after voters on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area decisively refused to extend a local sales tax used to keep up the complex housing the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium, home to professional baseball’s Kansas City Royals.

“Your insights and expertise are invaluable in shaping the success of this project,” Hawkins and Masterson said in their letter. “Your organization’s stature and experience in professional sports will help shape our understanding and ensure that this initiative aligns with the interests of all stakeholders involved.”

The lobbyists who registered to represent Scoop and Score included Ron Ryckman Jr., a Kansas City-area businessman who served as Kansas House speaker from 2017 through 2022. His former legislative chief of staff, Paje Resner, also registered, and she was listed as the group’s incorporator when it filed its articles of incorporation with the state on May 13.

Hunt told reporters in April that the Chiefs would take “a broader perspective” about the team’s future home after the vote in Missouri. The Chiefs had hoped to use their share of the local sales tax to help pay for an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead.

The plan favored by Hawkins, Masterson and other members of the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature would pay off bonds for a new stadium with sales and alcohol tax revenues generated in a designated area around the stadium. It would be similar to how the state and officials in Kansas City, Kansas, financed construction of NASCAR's Kansas Speedway and an adjacent shopping and entertainment district.

“We are poised to make the Kansas City Chiefs even stronger,” Hawkins and Masterson said in their letter. “It also promises to be a victory for Kansas taxpayers and a game-changer for our state’s economy.”

Some legislators were pushing a similar proposal to build new stadiums in Kansas for both the Chiefs and the Royals before lawmakers adjourned their annual session May 1, but the plan never came to a vote. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly called the special session to consider broad tax cuts after vetoing three previous tax plans, but legislators can consider whatever they want.

The earlier stadium-financing proposal faced opposition from Americans for Prosperity-Kansas, a small-government, low-tax group long against the use of such bonds and influential with Republicans. Critics have argued that using the bonds for big projects represents the state picking economic winners and losers instead of the free market.
