Children's Omnibus

Are you looking for a nail biter that will keep you awake all night? Try reading Ruskin Bond’s Children’s Omnibus. The book has seven titles combined by the famous children’s author in one book only. I’ll give you a clue to my favourite story from this book. Are you ready to guess?

A girl who has something very beautiful, but, one day someone steals it. What happens next? Now bookworms, let’s go a bit deeper into this book. Now, I will give you another clue about the story, but it tells more about my favourite character. She is a girl living in the Gharwal region of the Himalayas. She has a brother and is the same girl in the clue above.

Were you able to guess? If not, let me help you. The story name is “The Blue Umbrella” and my favourite character is named Binya. She is a courageous, strong and a kind girl who saved her possession from a thief. I would not tell you more, as you might get bored if I spoil the fun.

I would rate the Children’s Omnibus with 4.5 stars out of a total of 5. Do you want to know the reason for this rating? I’ll tell you. The collection has a story called Angry River, which I recommend to everybody. This story is a misfit in this collection of relaxing and positive stories as it comes as mysterious negative story. Imagine you are eating grapes and then suddenly find a banana dangling in between the bunch!

Angry River is a story about two children- Sita and Krishan. Sita became friends with Krishan as he saved her during floods from her home island. Mumta is Sita’s doll that she lost in the flood. In the original story ending, Sita finds a toy peacock and hopes that she will love this toy as much as Mumta. Don’t’ get bored bookworms, as you can read an alternate ending to this story. If I were the author, I would have ended the story of Angry River in this manner. “Sita was sitting on the banks of the river when she heard flute music and saw a boat approaching her. She saw that Krishan had came with something in his hand. Sita cried after she realised what Krishan was holding in his hands. Indeed, it was Mumta, her old doll. Krishan handed her the doll while she handed him his old flute. Together they sat on the banks of the river, talking and watching the sunset.”

My favourite section in the Children’s Omnibus is Grandfather’s Private Zoo – collection of happenings in a home zoo. The story titled ‘The Conceited Python’ reminded me about the time when my father held a python around his neck. Grandfather thought that it is unfair to keep a python by the snake charmer- hence he bought it to eventually release in the wild.

Hope the review helps in motivating you to read Children’s Omnibus.

Children’s Omnibus

children's omnibus

Unraveling seven short stories beautifully written by the evergreen children’s author Ruskin Bond, “The Children’s Omnibus” is truly an enchanting journey to embark upon. All of us know that the author has won numerous laurels for all the books he has written since all of them are in simple language and the style of writing is quite lucid which makes his books more interesting than ever.  Ruskin Bond being the inhabitant of the beautiful mountain area, his stories are replete with beautiful sceneries of the countryside.

The book opens with the story titled, Cricket for the Crocodile . The amazing thing about the story is that the author brings in the fact of how much cricket is enjoyed in our country. The main protagonist of the story is, of course, the crocodile, named Nakoo-ji (Nakoo here means intrusive). He is bound to bring a smile on the readers’ face as he flips the pages. The author has definitely put in a good amount of humor throughout. The story showcases a group of boys who love playing cricket and play it religiously each day. Nakoo-ji too has taken a strange liking towards the game and has become a regular spectator. There comes a time when the ball falls in the crocodile’s mouth and it develops a liking towards the ball too.

Cricket for the Crocodile is followed by The Blue Umbrella, Angry River, Ghost Trouble, Dust on the Mountain, Grandfather’s Private Zoo and the last being, The Road to the Bazaar which itself is a compilation of tiny stories . Each and every tale unfurls the story of common people living in villages and small towns. For example, Dust on the Mountain shows a boy, who just like any other rural people is attracted towards the city life. He believes that city life is easier and luxurious but later in the story, he somehow realizes that village life is nowhere near to city life. He understands that he does not want to be a part of the concrete jungle and returns to where he came from.

One of the critically acclaimed stories of the book is The Blue Umbrella. All people who watch documentaries and like simple movies which do not necessarily showcase a superstar but has an amazing script might have surely watch the movie adapted from this story. It is also named The Blue Umbrella. The protagonist is a girl who trades her lucky charm for a big and attractive blue umbrella which she carries with her everywhere. People around her start getting envious, especially a tea vendor who tries a lot to get the umbrella. The story concludes with a nice gesture by the girl of giving away her umbrella to the man.

The book is surely an enticing read. The one who picks it can never be let down, such good are the stories. Nature is defined in a vivid manner with Dehra being the prominent town. The adults who read will be reminded of their own childhood and the simplicity of the people of that era. This collection of stories is highly recommended for all age groups especially children.

In Conversation with Ruskin Bond

Ranji was up at dawn.

It was Sunday, a school holiday. Although he was supposed to be preparing for his exams, only a fortnight away, he couldn’t resist one or two more games before getting down to history and algebra and other unexciting things.

“I’m going to be a Test cricketer when I grow up,” he told his mother. “Of what use will maths be to me?”

“You never know,” said his mother, who happened to be more of a cricket fan than his father. “You might need maths to work out your batting average. And as far as history, wouldn’t you like to be a part of history? Famous cricketers make history!”

43

“Making history is all right,” said Ranji. “As long as I don’t have to remember the date on which I make it!”

Ranji met his friends and teammates in the park. The grass was still wet with dew, the sun only just rising behind the distant hills. The park was full of flower-beds, and swings and slides for smaller children. The boys would have to play on the river bank against their rivals, the village boys. Ranji did not have a full team that morning, but he was looking for a “friendly” match. The really important game would be held the following Sunday.

The village team was quite good because the boys lived near each other and practiced a lot together, whereas Ranji’s team was drawn from all parts of the town. There was the baker’s boy, Nathu; the tailor’s son, Sunder; the postmaster’s son, Prem; and the bank manager’s son, Anil. These were some of the better players. Sometimes their fathers also turned up for the game. The fathers weren’t very good, but you could tell them that.

43

After all, they helped to provide bats and balls and pocket-money.

A regular spectator at these matches was Nakoo the crocodile, who lived in the river. Nakoo means Nosey, but the village boys were very respectful and called him Nakoo-ji, Nakoo, sir. He had a long snout, rows of ugly-looking teeth (some of them badly in need of fillings), and a powerful scaly tail.

He was nearly fifteen feet long, but you did not see much of him; he swam low in the water and glided smoothly through the tall grasses near the river. Sometimes he came out on the river bank to bask in the sun. He did not care for people, especially cricketers. He disliked the noise they made, frightening away the water-birds and other creatures required for an interesting menu, and it was also alarming to have cricket balls plopping around in the shallows where he liked to rest.

Once Nakoo crept quite close to the bank manager, who was resting against one of the trees near the river bank. The bank manager was a portly gentleman, and Nakoo seemed to think he would make a good meal. Just then a party of villagers had come along, beating drums for a marriage party. Nakoo retired to the muddy waters of the river. He was a little tired of swallowing frogs, eels and herons. That juicy bank manager would make a nice change—he’d grab him one day!

Children's Literature & Fiction (Books)

Children's Literature & Fiction (Books)

Children's Literature & Fiction (Books)
