Espionage trial of U.S. reporter Gershkovich gets underway in Russia

June 26 (UPI) -- The Russian trial of U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich on spying charges opened Wednesday in Yekaterinburg, 1,000 miles east of Moscow, 14 months after he was arrested while on a reporting assignment for the Wall Street Journal.

He is accused of gathering classified information for the CIA on a Russian tank manufacturer near Yekaterinburg -- allegations the WSJ and the White House strongly reject -- and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if, as expected, he is convicted. Advertisement

The trial is being held behind closed doors but journalists allowed in to the Sverdlovsk Regional Courthouse before the proceeding got underway reported the 32-year-old appeared to be in good spirits.

A Federal Security Service indictment alleges he was acting "under instructions from the CIA" and "using painstaking conspiratorial methods," to collect secret information" about defense contractor Uralvagonzavod in Yekaterinburg.

The trial which is expected to take several months was later adjourned through Aug. 13 ., according to court officials. Advertisement

Only his defense lawyers are permitted in court for the trial and he has had limited consular access while in detention.

Deborah Ball, deputy world coverage chief of the WSJ which claims the Kremlin is "stockpiling Americans" as currency to exchange for Russians imprisoned in the West, condemned the trial as a sham.

"This is a bogus process. It's outrageous and outlandish. Evan will not enjoy any of the due process that we would expect in any Western court. It will be closed door. It will be secret," Ball said. "Russia's acquittal rate is less than 1%. We don't expect any chance of him being acquitted."

The Guardian's Russia reporter Pjotr Sauer who is a friend of Gershkovich, told CNN, "Evan is just an honest journalist," and emphasized that Russian authorities have not presented any evidence against him.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview aired in February that he would be open to a prisoner swap that could include releasing Gershkovich.

He said "special services are in contact with one another" and that he believed "an agreement can be reached."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov last week confirmed that "such interaction does exist" but that Moscow would not be commenting further due to the delicacy of the negotiations. Advertisement

About the author

James rodgers.

James Rodgers writes books on international affairs, especially armed conflict. His work has a focus on how the stories of those events are told to the world. Much of his writing draws on his own experience reporting from the former Soviet Union and the Middle East as a journalist from the 1990s onwards. During his BBC career (1995-2010), James completed postings in Moscow, Brussels, and Gaza where, from 2002-2004, he was the only international correspondent based in the territory. Assignment Moscow: Reporting on Russia From Lenin to Putin

Rodgers, a British journalist who has worked in Russia at various times since the 1990s, writes about the plight of the English-speaking correspondents who have covered Russia, going all the way back to the Russian Revolution in 1917. That their task was not easy is hardly surprising, yet Rodgers repeatedly emphasizes the difficulties they faced (the word “difficult” is used to describe their job at least two dozen times): strict censorship (foreign journalists were forced to clear their dispatches with Soviet authorities until 1961), travel restrictions, limited access to senior officials and ordinary people alike, and the government’s suspicion that Anglo-American correspondents were spies in disguise. Even Rodgers’s discussion of the American journalist Hedrick Smith—who, despite the restrictions, famously managed to produce exceptionally rich and insightful coverage of the Soviet Union and its people in the 1970s—is reduced to Smith’s reflections on how difficult his work was. Rodgers’s narrative rests on an enormous number of articles in Anglo-American media, books by and about journalists, and his own interviews with many Moscow correspondents. He quotes some of them as saying that journalists knew and understood Russia better than diplomats or policymakers did. This may or may not be true. Unfortunately, Rodgers doesn’t give the diplomats and policymakers a chance to respond.

Wsu regents approve sale of land to moscow-pullman airport.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Land owned by Washington State University will be sold to the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport to allow for improvements to the runway.

The WSU Board of Regents approved the $14.7 million sale on Friday.

The land in question currently houses the WSU’s Terre View Research Facility, which has generated more than $90 million in research funding since 2006. The regents also approved a motion to relocate that research facility.

The Pullman Moscow Regional Airport wants to re-align its runway to make it wider and longer and bring it into compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

Washington State University has worked with the airport in support of the runway project, which is expected to improve air service to the region.
