Sri Lanka stands at important crossroads as it makes a decisive transition into a middle-income economy. Within the competitive market, Sri Lanka should focus on strengthening its foreign exchange earning capacity through the export of goods and services. Considering the export goods, Sri Lanka had the extraordinary years of trading experience for tea with the rest of the world. There is a vital need to analyze Sri Lankan tea export performance in global competitive market. The main purposes of this study are to comparatively examine the tea export performance of Sri Lanka and identify the main challenges of it. Trade statistics in International Trade Center (ITC) and statistics related to Sri Lankan tea industry used as secondary data sources and industry expert’s ideas gathered to identify main challenges. This paper clearly highlighted that last decade tea export performance of Sri Lanka has turned down when comparing other tea exporting countries. It is further validated that volume of the tea exported from Sri Lanka to the top 6 tea importers in the world has come down from 2001 to 2013. If this behavior is extended to the rest of the key markets, Sri Lanka’s export revenue may be in trouble. In sum, all is not lost. The recipe is not found in the past. The country can learn lessons from past mistakes. It is required to identify the factors affecting on tea export competitiveness of Sri Lanka. Further study will focus to conduct a study to find out the factors affect on export competitiveness of tea industry of Sri Lanka. Key words: Tea Industry, Competitiveness, Market Share

In the slowly growing global tea market Lanka has not performed as well relative to its competitors in recent times as it did in the past. Sri Lanka needs to improve the efficiency of its industry to remain competitive in world tea market. Improving efficiency and international competitiveness in the Sri Lanka tea industry requires that the high costs of production, associated with low productivity, be reduced. Tea producers have the main responsibility for this. However, for improving efficiency and achieving international competitiveness, it is necessary that government policies for the tea industry are consistent with correction of market failures. This is not the case at present, with government policies for the tea industry directed partly to correcting market failures but more to achieving political goals.

The relevant literature suggests that ownership structure is one of the main corporate governance mechanisms influencing the scope of financial performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance of listed beverage food and tobacco companies for the period of 2010-2015. This study also examines the impact of ownership structure on financial performance. The sample consists of 10 listed beverage food and tobacco companies in Sri Lanka. In this study, data was collected from secondary sources and hypotheses are examined by using Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. The results reveal that ownership concentration and foreign ownership structure are positively correlated with financial performance of listed beverage food and tobacco companies while institutional ownership structure isn't significantly correlated with financial performance. It is also found that there is a significant impact of foreign ownership structure on financial performance. Higher the foreign ownership structure in listed beverage food and tobacco companies, the higher the financial performance which is preferable for the shareholders and it improves the wealth of companies.

This study examines the impact of capital structure together with their industry influence on financial performance of the companies listed in the Land and Property, Plantation, Beverage Food and Tobacco sectors of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) for a period of five years from 2011 to 2016. Data for the study was collected from published annual reports and the sample consists of 51 companies in these sectors. Regression based capital structure models were employed to investigate the phenomenon. The results reveal that the return on assets ratio is significantly correlated with all the capital structure proxies and the net profit margin has significant correlations with the long term debt to funds ratio and total debt to funds and short term debt ratio. The long term debt to funds ratio and the total debt to funds ratio are significant in determining the return on assets ratio. This study was conducted quantitatively to evaluate the factors influencing the financial performance of selected Tea manufacturing companies in Malawi. The following constructs or dimensions were used as the basis of the theoretical framework: budgetary control, exports market strategy, information technology (IT) use and the efficient management of assets. The data collected from the 103 respondents was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviations as well as the regression analysis were employed. The major findings of this study are that while the selected Tea manufacturing companies applied the profitability factors of budgetary control, export market strategy, information technology use, and efficient management there is no significant correlation between these factors and the profitability of the selected companies. The correlation is significantly weak as only two variables entered the regression: efficient management of assets and budgetary control. The conclusion is that there could be other latent factors or dimensions of profitability that influenced the profitability trends of the selected Tea manufacturing companies over the period 2010 to 2014. A recommendation for a further future study employing factor analysis to extract these latent dimensions is made thereto.
