Fees and funding

View Doctoral Academy tuition fees, project fees, completion fees and resubmission fees.

You will be required to pay an annual tuition fee during your research degree. You will be asked to make financial arrangements at the beginning of each year of study (based on your starting date).

Some projects may also be subject to additional project fees. Please see the project fees information below for more details. If you are unsure of your fee status (UK/EU or International) please refer to our definitions for determining fee status .

International applicants are normally required to pay a tuition fee deposit  in order to secure a place and be able to obtain the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) , which is necessary for visa applications. Upon successful registration, the deposit will be treated as part of your tuition fee.

The information provided should be considered alongside UWE Bristol’s Tuition Fee Policy . Please note that tuition fees are reviewed by the University on an annual basis and may be subject to increases year on year.

Project fee

Some research projects will require an additional financial contribution to cover additional resources that are not typically covered by tuition fees. These costs are usually incurred annually and you will be informed before you begin your studies whether this applies to you.

Completion fee

Following successful completion of your Stage 3 Progress Review, the level of supervision you require for the final stage before submission of your thesis for examination will be agreed and a completion fee will be set, if applicable, to reflect supervision requirements. The completion fee is as follows:

• Completion fee without supervision – £466 (2023/24 academic year).
• Completion fee with supervision – 40% of the relevant fee.
• Full fee with full supervision. 

Resubmission fee

If you are required to resubmit your thesis following your final viva, the resubmission fee for 2023/24 is £357.

Studentships

Throughout the year, a number of funded studentship opportunities  may become available and will be advertised via the Doctoral Academy as well as jobs.ac.uk . Please check regularly to see if there is an opportunity within your research area if you are interested in these.

Studentships typically cover the costs of tuition fees for UK students (or up to UK level if an international student) and have a bursary attached to cover living expenses. Please check the terms and conditions of the individual advert for full details.

Self-funded research

If your research area falls outside our advertised positions, you will need to cover the costs of tuition fees, project fees (if applicable) and living expenses personally or arrange for a sponsor or external body (for example an employer or government sponsor) to fund your research project. You will need to clearly state how you intend to fund your studies when making an application.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

If you are a prospective UK doctoral student, and you normally live in England, you may be able to apply for a UK government Postgraduate Doctoral Loan  to support your postgraduate research degree study.

University funding sources

• The UWE Bristol Alumni Scholarship offers a 25% discount to PGRs who have completed an eligible programme at UWE Bristol.  This discount is only on the first year of study if your course is full time, and for only the first two years of study if on a part-time course.
• The UWE Bristol Fund  can provide grants to students facing financial difficulty, support student-led community projects and fund students extra-curricular activities.

An exciting opportunity to apply for eight fully funded PhD positions in the College of Arts, Technology and Environment, UWE Bristol.

About the PhD Studentship

The  College of Arts, Technology and Environment  at UWE Bristol has a strong and continually evolving research environment. We submitted a significant proportion of our staff to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework ( REF 2021 ) and over 75% of our submitted research was judged to be internationally excellent or of world leading quality.

They welcome PhD applications that focus on one or more of our core themes, and that align with one or more of the college’s disciplinary strengths.

Candidates for these PhD positions will be interviewed by a panel including the relevant school’s Associate Head for Research, members of the potential supervisory team, and a senior researcher from the school. Following this interview process, the successful candidates will be offered a studentship and unsuccessful candidates will be notified within two weeks of the interview.

Candidates who meet the criteria to study at UWE Bristol but are not offered one of the eight studentships will be offered the opportunity to consider pursuing a self-funded PhD.

They particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian, multiple heritage or other minority ethnic candidates as we are currently under-represented in these areas within UWE Bristol. However, all appointments are made strictly on individual merits.

Eligibility

• You would normally be expected to have a 2:1 degree in a relevant subject area.
• A related Masters’ degree or further appropriate research experience is desirable.
• A recognised  English language qualification  is required.

Supporting documentation : You will need to upload your research proposal, all your degree certificates and transcripts and your proof of  English language proficiency  as attachments to your application, so please have these available when you complete the application form.

Your referee will be asked for a reference at the time you submit your application, so please ensure that your nominated referees are willing and able to provide references  within 14 days  of your application being submitted.

Applications open for Partnership PhD scheme

UWE Bristol has recently announced another application round of its successful Partnership PhD programme.

A Partnership PhD bridges the gap between external organisations and university. It enables an organisation to gain access to cutting-edge real-world research that can help transform it.

The Partnership establishes a relationship between an organisation and UWE Bristol, based on a specific project that is mutually beneficial.

Organisations have the opportunity to choose a relevant research area and gain access to cutting-edge research. The researcher will work extensively with the organisation to provide a tailored piece of research.

In turn, the researcher will gain an opportunity to pursue their research in a real-world setting, developing transferable and interdisciplinary skills whilst gaining cross-sector experience.

Over the past two years, the Graduate School, part of the Research, Business and Innovation team at UWE Bristol, has been developing the Partnership PhD scheme. Through it, UWE’s investment in Post Graduate Research has been matched by over £1.5m from 40+ partner organisations.

The University of the West of England, Bristol offers more than £100,000 worth of scholarships for international students each year.  This includes the Chancellor’s Scholarship wherein the recipient will be required to undertake an internship working within the International Development Office and other departments. The recipient will also be required to undertake ambassadorial activity for the University throughout the duration of the course.

The University of the West of England (also known as UWE Bristol, or simply UWE) is a public university located near the city of Bristol, United Kingdom. The university has a history dating back to the Merchant Venturers Navigation School which was founded in 1595, with the present institution granted university status in 1992. Its main campus is at Frenchay near Bristol, about 5 miles (8 kilometres) north of the city centre and close to the M32 motorway. Applications are open for the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering's  Elevate: Boosting women in STEM scholarships  for students commencing in 2025. Elevate scholarships are provided to women and non-binary people studying postgraduate STEM research degrees.

National Industry PhD Program (N.I. PhD) – Round 4 – Expressions of Interest due 17 June 2024

The  National Industry PhD Program , funded through the Department of Education, is designed to facilitate industry focused PhD projects to allow better translation of university research into commercialisation outcomes.

The program funds two types of PhD

• Industry Linked  – provides a ~$7000 annual top up to a main award (RTP equivalent) where there is an end-user contribution of $10,000 pa 
• Industry Researcher  – provides a ~$40,000 pa subsidy to employers that support their staff to conduct a PhD

Academic staff interested in applying should submit a draft application by 17 June 2024 to allow time for proposal development and compliance checking ahead of 1 July 2024 application opening date.

2024 CSIRO iPhD Round 2

The CSIRO Industry PhD program aims to increase research-industry workforce mobility and build research talent. Through the CSIRO Industry PhD program, students undertake a research project developed in collaboration with, and jointly supervised by, an industry partner, a university researcher, and a CSIRO researcher. 

HDR Candidates receive a stipend of $47,020 p.a (2025 rate) – the industry partner needs to contribute $12,000 p.a., while the Govt contributes $35,020 p.a.  The scheme is only open to Domestic HDRs.

Round 2 expressions of interest are open until  23 August 2024  for projects to commence in 2025.

Under CSIRO iPhD Program rules industry partners can include not-for-profits and government-owned entities where they can demonstrate alignment with program objectives. For further information, please see the  revised program rules ,  program fact sheet  or visit  www.csiro.au/iPhD .
