Public speaking, it is commonly said, is one of the most pervasive fears (in some surveys, second only to death). It is estimated that 75% of all people suffer from fear of public speaking. In academic training, speaking skills are rarely taught in any formal sense, which may increase anxiety and discomfort. Yet public speaking is one of the most important skills for scholars, and hence a skill which is commonly tested—from lectures to formal research presentations.

The goal of this module is to provide some core materials one can use to begin the journey of becoming comfortable with speaking in public. Each section, below, contains specific tips for how to make public speaking less daunting.

I. Recognize that public speaking is an everyday activity

Much anxiety over public speaking starts from the fact that we presume public speaking to be unnatural, or that one has to act in a “special way” when giving a formal talk. In fact, the opposite is true: public speaking is something one practices on a daily basis: anytime we speak with another person, we are calling on (and honing) our speaking skills. As teachers/academics, we are public speakers whenever we talk about our research at conferences, workshops, etc.

Ways in which we are public speakers/presenters everyday:

Social gatherings
Speaking to one’s colleagues/mentor/adviser
Participating in committee work or faculty/departmental meetings
Introducing oneself to others at orientations or other large gatherings
Dealing with family
Participating in a group/team discussion
Sharing a meal in a dining hall, etc.

Although the form may vary, we are always communicating with others in a public forum. Many people suffer in “public speaking” because they try to change their speaking patterns, attitudes, etc. when it is time to give an official presentation. Much of the specific training in public speaking is designed to force oneself to go back to what people do normally on an everyday basis.

Possible exercise to practice this tip : introduce yourself to random people on campus, in the dining halls, etc. Note that this is not much different from introducing yourself in an interview, conference or other “high stakes” environment.

II. Recognize the power of fear management

Expert public speaking requires transferring the comfort we have in low-stakes interactions to formal environments when we are expected to talk to others.

Some incorrect assumptions about those who are expert public speakers:

Instead, all public speakers have a learning period — it is just that some got an early start than others by participating in social activities that forced them to develop a comfort zone (i.e. church, debate, theater, recitals — even living in a large family)
All speakers have fear — they just learn to manage it.

Fear management requires reinterpreting public speaking environments in ways that promote positive performance. See the following handouts for specific examples:

Examples concrete ways to manage fear:

Channel a coach-like pep talk…in your head
Breathe in and out in a deliberate fashion, drawing in breaths from your belly rather than your chest
Use “lucky charms” like teddy bears, pieces of clothing, jewelry
Listen to “pump up” music on an iPod or other listening device
Seed the audience with supportive friends or friendly faces

All effective public speakers, consciously or not, use these tactics to improve their performance. Doing so consciously and consistently allows a speaker to minimize nervousness at any time.

III. Handle questions fearlessly

Handling Q & A is one of the more intimidating, nerve-wracking aspects of public speaking, whether the speaker is a graduate student or seasoned professor. With some specific tips and practice, the Q&A session can become one of the strongest parts of your repertory.

Tip 1 : Do not let difficult questions scare you. Most assume that tough questioning indicates that the audience is unpersuaded by one’s argument and presentation. Very often the reverse is true, especially in academic audiences, where it is called “engaging with the material.” Seeing a tough question as an opportunity may help alleviate nervousness and improve performance.
Tip 2 : Preparation can improve performance. Anticipating possible or common questions and pre-preparing responses increases confidence and impresses audiences. Many public speakers secretly hope that certain tough questions are never asked when, in fact, being ready to deal with tough issues head-on can increase persuasiveness. Having pre-scripted outlines or word-for-word responses may be especially useful.
Tip 3 : Having a structured method of answering questions can improve one’s persuasiveness. Often the manner in which one answers a question matters as much as the content of the answer itself. Structuring responses can help significantly. See the handout for methods of how to answer questions and how to handle situations where one does not know how to answer a question.
Tip 4: Consider your posture and body language. Avoid: folded arms across chest, hands clutched together in front (i.e. the fig-leaf position), hands in your pocket, and other hostile- or defensive-seeming positions. Practice what to do with your hands by watching videos of public speakers, classical singers in concert, etc.

The Instructional Enhancement Fund (IEF) awards grants of up to $500 to support the timely integration of new learning activities into an existing undergraduate or graduate course. Teaching Speech: Encouraging Good Learning Practices

Introduction, what is speech, what should an introductory speech course include.

The vocabulary of speech terminology.
How to prepare a speech outline (with an appropriate introduction, body and conclusion).
The key points of presentation, including the importance of eye contact, body movement and the voice.
The roles of both the speaker and the audience.
Identifying and categorizing different types of speech.
How to judge and evaluate a speech.

Coping with Large Classes

A practical example, peer evaluation and the student evaluation sheet, strong points.

Good job. A well-organized speech.
Well done. A well-prepared speech.
Good delivery. You held your audience well.
Interesting information. I learned something I didn’t know before.
Very funny. I laughed.
You were very enthusiastic about your subject.
Good strong voice.
Your intonation was very natural.
Good, clear pronunciation.
Eye contact was good. You looked at everybody.

WEAK POINTS

Wait until everyone is listening before you start.
Speak up! I couldn’t hear you.
You sound like a robot. Put more expression in your voice.
Slow down. It is not a race.
Relax. Don’t fiddle with your (hair/clothes/paper…)
Look at your audience, not the (floor/ceiling/teacher…)
It’s O.K. to make a mistake, but say “Excuse me” in English, no in your native lanaguage.

Quantitative Versus Qualitative Approaches to Teaching and Learning

There is no need to separate main ideas from detail; all are worth one point. And there is no need to assemble these ideas into a coherent summary or to integrate them with anything else because that is not required. (Lohman, 1993:19)

In the quantitative outlook assumptions are made about the nature and the acquisition of knowledge, that are untenable in the light of what is now known about human learning. (Biggs, 1994)

A positive motivational context, hopefully intrinsic but at least one involving a felt need-to-know and an aware emotional climate.
A high degree of learner activity, both task-related and reflective.
Interaction with others, both at the peer level with other students, and hierarchically, within “scaffolding” provided by an expert tutor.

Speech by the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Athina Michaelidou, at the International Conference: “Learning Innovation Summit 2024 – Unveiling the Future οf Learning & Artificial Intelligence”

It is with great pleasure that I am present today at this important event for our country, which, through the collaboration of the CARDET Research Centre, the University of Nicosia, the University of Groningen, and the University College Dublin strengthens the effort to redefine education, both at local and European level, as required by the continuous and rapid developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. I congratulate all stakeholders for this initiative, which is in line with our own visions and plans for education.

The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth thoroughly examines the changes that digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, bring to the educational landscape and is in line with the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027 prepared by the European Commission with the key pillars of 1) promoting the development of a high-performing digital education ecosystem, and 2) enhancing digital skills and competences for digital transformation. In addition, it is in line with the Council of Europe’s Education Strategy 2024-2030 on the transformative power of education. Therefore, the Ministry is active in various directions to achieve the above, recognising the need to redefine the learning process for achieving the vision of a socially just society.

The vision of the Government, and more specifically of our Ministry, is oriented towards an education that promotes literacy and multilingualism, competences in mathematics, science, technology and engineering, digital competence, personal, social and metacognitive competence, civic competence, as well as the ability of cultural awareness and expression – all of these for the common good and a better society. These cannot be achieved without cultivating skills such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and intercultural skills. This vision takes the path of implementation through the modernisation and updating of the curricula, the first phase of which has been completed and their pilot implementation is under way.

In addition, since the previous school year, schools have been provided with technical equipment under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan to support the work of teachers, along with the implementation of the updated curricula. It is important to note that in the same context, supporting material for teachers is under development. This effort could not be done without a large-scale training of teachers, which will empower them to use the supporting material, while adapting them for the teaching and learning process.

In this context, the triad of Digitally Competent Student, Digitally Competent Teacher, and Digitally Competent School serves as a guide for the actions of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, while encouraging the training and professional support of teachers with the aim of further developing their digital skills and the meaningful pedagogical integration of new technologies in the classroom.

Digital competence is undoubtedly the key competence nowadays. Artificial intelligence, as an important sector of the digital world, strengthens the effort of cultivating digital skills since it can mark a new era for teaching and learning, in any discipline, when it is used ethically and pedagogically. Our Ministry takes into account in its plans the digital competence frameworks: DigComp 2.2 for citizens, DigComEdu for teachers and DigCompOrg for organisations such as educational institutions, as well as the ethical guidelines of the European Commission on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Data in teaching and learning for teachers.

To this end, our Ministry is in the process of preparing a Roadmap and Action Plan for the introduction, integration and utilisation of Artificial Intelligence in our education system. The plans include collaborations and synergies with international organisations and other ministries of the Republic of Cyprus and abroad, with AI experts in education from Cyprus and abroad. We critically monitor recommendations, frameworks and good practices for introducing “Knowledge about AI” and “Learning with AI” from Cyprus as well as internationally. We also plan to design and implement teacher training programs on issues related to AI, its use in the classroom, as well as the ethical framework that needs to be taken into account in an educational environment.

So, we are here today with our prospects open, to respond to today and tomorrow, to reshape the educational landscape in a way that every individual of any age has the foundations to respond to today’s challenges, as well as the flexibility and adaptability to respond to future ones.

I would like to congratulate all organisers and volunteers of the Summit and thank all the participants for their attendance.
