గ‌ తేడాది ‘య‌శోద‌’తో బాక్సాఫీస్ ముందు సంద‌డి చేసింది స‌మంత‌( Samantha ). అయితే ఇది ఆమెకు మిశ్ర‌మ ఫ‌లితాన్నే అందించింది. ఈ నేప‌థ్యంలోనే విజ‌య‌మే ల‌క్ష్యంగా ‘శాకుంత‌లం’(Shaakuntalam)తో బాక్సాఫీస్ బ‌రిలోకి దిగింది.  ఇది ఆమెకు తొలి పౌరాణిక చిత్రం. రుద్ర‌మ‌దేవి వంటి హిట్ త‌ర్వాత కొన్నేళ్ల గ్యాప్ తీసుకొని.. ఎన్నో వ్య‌యప్ర‌యాస‌ల కోర్చి గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్ (Guna sekhar) తెర‌కెక్కించిన చిత్ర‌మిది. భారీ గ్రాఫిక్స్ హంగుల‌తో త్రీడీలో రూపొందించిన సినిమా కావ‌డం.. దిల్‌రాజు స‌మ‌ర్ప‌కుడిగా వ్య‌వ‌హ‌రిస్తుండ‌టంతో దీనిపై ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో మంచి అంచ‌నాలు ఏర్ప‌డ్డాయి. దీనికి త‌గ్గ‌ట్లుగానే పాట‌లు, ప్ర‌చార చిత్రాలు ఆక‌ట్టుకునేలా ఉండ‌టంతో అంచ‌నాలు రెట్టింప‌య్యాయి. మ‌రి ఈ ప్రేమ కావ్యం తెర‌పై ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌కు ఎలాంటి అనుభూతిని పంచింది? (Shaakuntalam review) స‌మంత‌, గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌ల‌కు విజ‌యాన్ని అందించిందా?

క‌థేంటంటే: విశ్వామిత్రుని తపస్సును భ‌గ్నం చేసేందుకు ఇంద్రుని ఆదేశానుసారం భూలోకాన అడుగిడుతుంది మేన‌క  (మధుబాల). ఆమె త‌న అంద‌చందాల‌తో విశ్వామిత్రుని త‌ప‌స్సుకు భంగం క‌లిగించ‌డ‌మే కాక‌..  శారీకంగానూ ఆయ‌న‌కు ద‌గ్గ‌ర‌వుతుంది. ఫలితంగా ఓ ఆడ‌బిడ్డ‌కు జ‌న్మ‌నిస్తుంది. అయితే న‌రుడి వ‌ల్ల క‌లిగిన ఆ సంతానానికి దేవలోకంలో ప్ర‌వేశం లేదు.  అందుకే ఆ పాప‌ను భూలోకంలోనే వదిలి స్వర్గానికి వెళ్ళిపోతుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఆ చిన్నారిని ఓ ప‌క్షుల గుంపు మాలినీ తీరాన ఉన్న క‌ణ్వాశ్ర‌మ ప్రాంతంలో వ‌దిలి వెళ్ల‌గా..  కణ్వ మహర్షి (సచిన్ ఖడేకర్) ఆ పాప‌ను దైవ ప్ర‌సాదంగా భావించి ద‌త్తత తీసుకుంటాడు. శకుంతల అని పేరు పెట్టి.. క‌న్న‌బిడ్డ‌లా పెంచి పెద్ద చేస్తాడు. ఒకానొక రోజు ఆ క‌ణ్వాశ్రమానికి దుష్యంత మహారాజు (దేవ్ మోహన్) విచ్చేస్తాడు. శకుంతల (సమంత) అంద‌చందాలు, లావ‌ణ్యాన్ని చూసి తొలి చూపులోనే మ‌న‌సు పారేసుకుంటాడు. శ‌కుంత‌ల కూడా దుష్యంతుడి ప్రేమ‌కు దాసోహ‌మ‌వుతుంది. ఇద్ద‌రూ గాంధ‌ర్వ వివాహంతో ఒక్క‌ట‌వుతారు. (Shaakuntalam movie review) కొంత‌కాలం త‌ర్వాత దుష్యంతుడు త‌న రాజ్యానికి బయలుదేరతాడు. త్వ‌ర‌లోనే తిరిగి వ‌చ్చి.. రాచ మర్యాదలతో త‌న‌ని రాజ్యానికి ఆహ్వానించి, మహారాణిగా ప్రజలకు పరిచయం చేస్తానని శ‌కుంత‌ల‌కు మాట ఇస్తాడు. ఆ స‌మ‌యంలోనే త‌న గుర్తుగా ఓ ఉంగ‌రం కూడా ఇస్తాడు. కొన్నాళ్ల‌కు శ‌కుంత‌ల‌ గర్భవతి అవుతుంది. ఓవైపు ఆమెకు నెల‌లు నిండుతున్నా.. దుష్యంతుడు ఎంత‌కీ తిరిగిరాడు. దీంతో శ‌కుంత‌ల‌నే దుష్యంత రాజ్యానికి పంపిస్తాడు క‌ణ్వ మ‌హ‌ర్షి.  కానీ, అక్క‌డికి వెళ్లాక ఆమెకు ఊహించ‌ని ప‌రాభ‌వం ఎదుర‌వుతుంది. క‌ణ్వ‌ మహర్షి ఆశ్రమానికి వెళ్ళిన సంగ‌తి త‌న‌కి గుర్తుంది కానీ.. శకుంతల ఎవరో తనకు తెలియదంటాడు దుష్యంతుడు. మ‌రోవైపు ఆయ‌నే త‌న భ‌ర్త అని చెప్పుకోవ‌డానికి ఉన్న ఒకానొక్క ఆధార‌మైన ఉంగ‌రాన్ని కూడా ఎక్క‌డో పోగొట్టుకుంటుంది శ‌కుంత‌ల‌. దీంతో నిండు స‌భ‌లో ఆమె తీవ్ర అవ‌మానాన్ని ఎదుర్కొంటుంది.  మ‌రి దుష్యంతుడు.. శ‌కుంత‌ల‌ను మ‌ర్చిపోవ‌డానికి కార‌ణ‌మేంటి?వీళ్లిద్ద‌రూ తిరిగి ఎలా క‌లిశారు?(Shaakuntalam review) వీరు విడిపోవ‌డానికి దుర్వాస మహాముని (మోహన్ బాబు)కి ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి?దుష్యంతుడికి శ‌కుంత‌ల‌ను ద‌క్క‌కుండా చేయాల‌న్న అసుర మూక కాలానీముల ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు స‌ఫ‌లమ‌య్యాయా?లేదా? అస‌లు వీళ్ల‌కు ఈ క‌థ‌కు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి?

ఎలా ఉందంటే: కాళిదాసు ర‌చించిన సంస్కృత నాట‌కం అభిజ్ఞాన శాకుంత‌లంలోని శ‌కుంత‌ల - దుష్యంతుల ప్రేమ‌కావ్యం అంద‌రికీ సుప‌రిచిత‌మే. మ‌న భార‌తీయ సాహిత్యంలో ఉన్న ఓ అద్భుత ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌గా దీనికి పేరుంది. దీనికే త‌న‌దైన శైలిలో కాస్త క‌ల్ప‌న జోడించి తెర‌పై ఓ అపురూప దృశ్య కావ్యంలా అందంగా ఆవిష్క‌రింప‌జేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశారు గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌. (Shaakuntalam review) నిజానికి ఈత‌రానికి ఇలాంటి క‌థ‌ను అందించాల‌న్న గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌ ఆలోచ‌న అభినంద‌నీయ‌మే. అయితే ఇలా బాగా సుప‌రిచిత‌మైన క‌థ‌ల్ని.. రెండున్న‌ర గంట‌ల సినిమాగా ఆద్యంతం ఆక‌ట్ట‌కునేలా చెప్ప‌డానికి ఎంతో నేర్పు కావాలి. ఎంత‌ సాంకేతిక హంగుల‌ద్దినా.. క‌థ‌లో వేగం.. బ‌ల‌మైన సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ లేక‌పోతే ద‌ర్శ‌కుడి ప్ర‌య‌త్నం వృథా ప్ర‌యాసే అవుతుంది. గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్ శాకుంత‌లం దీనికి ఓ పెద్ద ఉదాహ‌ర‌ణ‌. నిజానికి ఇలాంటి కథని గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌ లాంటి దర్శకుడు తీస్తున్నపుడు కచ్చితంగా అందులో వైవిధ్యం ఆశిస్తాం. కానీ, ఈ ప్రేమకావ్యాన్ని చ‌దువుతున్న‌ప్పుడు క‌లిగే అనుభూతి.. తెర‌పై చూస్తున్న‌ప్పుడు ఏమాత్రం క‌ల‌గ‌దు. (Shaakuntalam movie review) దీనికి నాసిర‌కమైన త్రీడీ హంగులు ఓ కార‌ణ‌మైతే.. న‌త్త‌న‌డ‌క‌న సాగే క‌థ‌నం, సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ లేమి మ‌రో కార‌ణం.

చిన్నారి శ‌కుంత‌ల‌ను ఓ ప‌క్షుల గుంపు క‌ణ్వాశ్ర‌మానికి తీసుకురావ‌డంతో క‌థ ప్రారంభ‌మ‌వుతుంది. ఆ ఆశ్ర‌మ ప్రాంతం.. అందులోని జంతువులు, ప‌క్షులతో శ‌కుంత‌ల‌కు ఉన్న అనుబంధాలు ప‌రిచ‌యం చేస్తూ నెమ్మ‌దిగా క‌థ‌లోకి తీసుకెళ్లే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశారు గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌. దుష్యంతుడి పాత్ర ప‌రిచ‌య స‌న్నివేశాలు ఆక‌ట్టుకునేలా ఉన్నా.. పేల‌వ‌మైన విజువ‌ల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ వ‌ల్ల ఆ ఎపిసోడ్ తేలిపోయిన‌ట్ల‌నిపిస్తుంది. శ‌కుంత‌ల‌కు దుష్యంతుడు ఎదురుప‌డే స‌న్నివేశాల్ని చ‌క్క‌గా తీర్చిదిద్దుకున్నారు గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్. కానీ, వాళ్లిద్దరూ ఒక్క‌టయ్యే క్ర‌మంలో వారి మధ్య ఉన్న ప్రేమ‌ను, కెమిస్ట్రీని మ‌న‌సుల‌కు హ‌త్తుకునేలా చూపించ‌లేక‌పోయారు. దీంతో ప్రేక్ష‌కులు ఆరంభం నుంచే వారి ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌కు స‌రిగా క‌నెక్ట్ కాలేక‌పోతారు. (Shaakuntalam review) అయితే ఈ ప్రేమ క‌థ మ‌ధ్యలో వీలు చిక్కిన‌ప్పుడ‌ల్లా.. అసుర‌జాతి కాలానీముల క‌థ‌ను, దుర్వాస మ‌హ‌ర్షి క‌థ‌ను ప‌రిచ‌యం చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశారు గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్‌. ఇవి ఈత‌రం ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని మెప్పిస్తాయి.

దుర్వాస మ‌హ‌ర్షి ఎంట్రీ క‌థ‌ను ఒక్క‌సారిగా మ‌లుపు తిప్పుతుంది. (Shaakuntalam review) ఆయ‌న ఎపిసోడ్‌తోనే విరామ‌మిచ్చిన తీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. దుష్యంతుడి రాజ్యానికి శ‌కుంత‌ల వెళ్ల‌డం.. నిండు స‌భ‌లో ఆమె అవ‌మాన ప‌డ‌టం.. రాజ్య ప్ర‌జ‌లు ఆమెను రాళ్ల‌తో కొట్టి చంపే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేయ‌డం వంటి స‌న్నివేశాల‌తో ద్వితీయార్ధం ఆరంభం ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా సాగుతుంది. కానీ, ఆ త‌ర్వాత క‌థ కాస్త గాడి త‌ప్పుతుంది. శ‌కుంత‌ల - దుష్యంతుడు తిరిగి ఎలా క‌లిశార‌న్న విష‌యాన్ని ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా తెర‌పైకి తీసుకురాలేక‌పోయారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు.  ముగింపునకు ముందు కాలానీముల‌తో దుష్యంతుడు త‌ల‌ప‌డే యాక్ష‌న్ ఎపిసోడ్ కూడా పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకోదు. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో భ‌ర‌తుడిగా అల్లు అర్హ ఎంట్రీ.. దుష్యంతుడితో ఆమె వాద‌న మాత్రం ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: శ‌కుంత‌ల పాత్ర‌కు న్యాయం చేసేందుకు స‌మంత శ‌క్తివంచ‌న లేకుండా శ్ర‌మించింది. కానీ, ఆ పాత్ర ఆమెకెందుకో అంత‌గా నప్పలేదు. త‌న డ‌బ్బింగ్ కూడా పెద్దగా ఆక‌ట్టుకోదు. భావోద్వేగ‌భ‌రిత స‌న్నివేశాల్ని మాత్రం త‌న అనుభ‌వంతో పండించే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేసింది సామ్‌. దుష్యంతుడి పాత్ర‌కు త‌గ్గ రూపం దేవ్ మోహ‌న్‌(Dev Mohan)లో ఉంది కానీ.. ఆయ‌న న‌ట‌న కృత‌కంగా అనిపిస్తుంది. నిజానికి ఆ పాత్ర‌కు కాస్త ఫేం ఉన్న న‌టుడ్ని తీసుకొని ఉంటే సినిమాకు మార్కెట్ ప‌రంగా క‌లిసొచ్చేది. (Shaakuntalam movie review)  దుర్వాస మ‌హ‌ర్షి పాత్ర‌కు మోహ‌న్‌బాబు (Mohan babu) నిండుదనం తెచ్చారు. ఆయ‌న క‌నిపించేది కొద్దిసేపే అయినా అంద‌రినీ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటారు. స‌చిన్‌, అన‌న్య‌, మ‌ధుబాల‌, జిషు సేన్ గుప్తా.. ఇలా తెర‌పై లెక్క‌కు మిక్కిలి పాత్ర‌లు క‌నిపిస్తాయి. కానీ, ఏదీ గుర్తుంచుకునే స్థాయిలో ఉండ‌దు. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో అల్లు అర్హ (Allu arha) న‌ట‌న.. ఆమె ప‌లికే సంభాష‌ణ‌లు ముచ్చ‌ట‌గొలుపుతాయి. అంద‌రికీ తెలిసిన శాకుంత‌ల - దుష్యంతుల ప్రేమ క‌థ‌ను తెర‌పై ఓ దృశ్య కావ్యంలా ఆవిష్క‌రించడంలో గుణ‌శేఖ‌ర్ ఆకట్టుకోలేకపోయారు. విజువ‌ల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ విష‌యంలో మ‌రింత‌ శ్ర‌ద్ధ వ‌హించాల్సింది. మ‌ణిశ‌ర్మ సంగీతం ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌కు ఆహ్లాదాన్ని క‌లిగిస్తుంది. సినిమాకి ఆయ‌న అందించిన నేప‌థ్య సంగీతం, పాట‌లే ప్ర‌ధాన ఆక‌ర్ష‌ణ‌. నిర్మాణ విలువ‌లు ఫ‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయి.

సమంత, దేవ్ మోహన్ జంటగా గుణశేఖర్ దర్శకత్వంలో తెరకెక్కిన భారీ పౌరాణిక చిత్రం శాకుంతలం నేడు ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. మరి ఈ సినిమా ఎంతవరకు మెప్పించిందో రివ్యూ చూద్దాం.

దుష్యంతుడు (దేవ్ మోహన్) మహా రాజు. ఒకసారి వేటకు వెళ్లినప్పుడు కణ్వ మహర్షి (సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్) ఆశ్రమాన్ని సందర్శిస్తాడు. అక్కడ ఉన్న శకుంతల (సమంత)ను చూసి ఆమె సౌందర్యానికి ఆకర్షితుడవుతాడు. శకుంతల కూడా దుష్యంతుడి ప్రేమలో పడుతుంది. ఇద్దరూ గాంధర్వ వివాహం చేసుకుని ఒక్కటి అవుతారు. ఆ తర్వాత వీరి జీవితాల్లో జరిగిన సంఘటనలు ఏమిటి ?, దుష్యంతుడు అసలు శకుంతలను ఎలా మర్చిపోతాడు ?, చివరకు వీరి ప్రేమ కథ ఎలా సాగింది ? ఎలా ముగిసింది ? లాంటి విషయాలు తెలుసుకోవాలంటే వెండితెర పై ఈ సినిమాను చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఈ సినిమా చూస్తున్నంత సేపు మహాభారతంలోని ఆది పర్వంలోకి వెళ్లి.. శకుంతలా దుష్యంతుల ప్రేమ గాధను, బాధను కళ్ళ ముందు చూస్తున్న బావన కలుగుతుంది. ముఖ్యంగా 3డి విజువల్స్ సినిమా స్థాయిని పెంచాయి. అలాగే ప్రేక్షకులకు ఆ అడవి ప్రాంతంలోకి వెళ్లి ఆ లోకంలో విహరిస్తున్న ఫీలింగ్ కలుగుతుంది. మొత్తమ్మీద అద్భుతమైన విజువల్స్ తో పాటు భారీ సాంకేతిక విలువలతో తెరకెక్కించబడటమే ఈ సినిమా ప్రధాన బలం. ప్రధాన పాత్రల ఎమోషన్ అండ్ పెయిన్ ఫ్యామిలీ ప్రేక్షకులకు కొంతవరకు కనెక్ట్ అవుతుంది.

ఇక సమంత తన పరిపక్వతమైన నటనతో ఈ చిత్రంలో ఉత్తమమైన నటనను కనబర్చారు. ముఖ్యంగా క్లిష్టమైన కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె తన మార్క్ నటనతో సినిమాకే హైలెట్ గా నిలిచారు. కీలక పాత్రలో నటించిన మోహన్ బాబు తన మ్యానరిజమ్స్ తో తన శైలి నటనతో బాగా ఆకట్టుకున్నారు. హీరోగా నటించిన దేవ్ మోహన్ తన పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశారు. ఆయనకు సంబంధించిన కొన్ని యాక్షన్ సీక్వెన్సెస్ లో దేవ్ మోహన్ నటన సినిమాకే ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తోంది. మిగిలిన నటీనటులు సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్, ప్రకాష్ రాజ్, గౌతమి, కబీర్ బేడీ తదితరులు తమ పాత్రలకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఎమోషనల్ గా లవ్ స్టోరీతో సాగే ఈ సినిమా విజువల్ పరంగా కొంతవరకు ఆకట్టుకున్నా.. కథ పరంగా ఎలాంటి కొత్తదనం లేదు. అలాగే ఫస్టాఫ్ ను ఆసక్తికరమైన విజువల్స్ తో అక్కడక్కడ కాస్త ఇంట్రెస్ట్ గా నడిపినా.. స్లోగా సాగే సీన్స్ తో కొన్నిచోట్ల స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ను నెమ్మదిగా నడిపారు. సెకెండ్ హాఫ్ లో కూడా కొన్ని సీన్స్ చాలా స్లోగా సాగుతాయి. ముఖ్యంగా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో సమంత పాత్ర గర్భవతి అయ్యాక వచ్చే సీన్స్ ను అనవసరంగా ల్యాగ్ చేస్తూ డ్రైవ్ చేయడం వల్ల, ఆ సాగదీత సీన్స్ లో ఇంట్రస్ట్ మిస్ అయింది.

అలాగే మధ్యమధ్యలో వచ్చే ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ కట్స్ కూడా కొంత ఇబ్బంది పెడుతాయి. ఇంకా టైట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఉండి ఉంటే ఈ సినిమా కొంతవరకు అయినా సంతృప్తికరంగా ఉండి ఉండేది. కానీ, రొటీన్ ప్లేతో బోరింగ్ ట్రీట్మెంట్ తో ఈ పౌరాణిక చిత్రం సాగడంతో సినిమా అవుట్ పుట్ బాగా దెబ్బ తింది. మెయిన్ గా సినిమాలో ప్రేమ కథలో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ బాగా పెట్టి ఉండాల్సింది. ఇంకా టైట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మరియు ఎంగేజింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ ను ప్లే లో డిజైన్ చేసుకోవాల్సింది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం:

దర్శకుడు గుణశేఖర్ భారీ విజువల్స్ తో భారీ చిత్రాన్ని తెరకెక్కించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను అద్భుత విజువల్స్ తో బాగా తెరకెక్కించినప్పటికీ.. కథాకథనాలను మాత్రం ఆ స్థాయిలో ఆయన రాసుకోలేదు. మణిశర్మ అందించిన సంగీతం ఏవరేజ్ గా ఉంది. ఆయన అందించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ కూడా అంత గొప్పగా ఏమీ లేదు. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ చాలా బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని ప్రతి సన్నివేశాన్ని భారీ విజువల్స్ తో చాలా బ్యూటిఫుల్ గా చిత్రీకరించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ ఓకే. కాకపోతే.. అక్కడక్కడా ఉన్న కొన్ని సాగతీత సీన్స్ ను తగ్గించాల్సింది. నిర్మాతలు ఎక్కడా కాంప్రమైజ్ కాకుండా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. నిర్మాణ విలువులు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

పౌరాణిక ప్రేమ జంట ‘శకుంతలా దుష్యంతుల’ ప్రేమ కథకు 3డి ఎఫెక్ట్ అద్ది.. బ్యూటిఫుల్ విజువల్స్ తో దర్శకుడు గుణశేఖర్ ఈ శాకుంతలం చిత్రాన్ని ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు తీసుకొచ్చాడు. అయితే, గుణశేఖర్ విజువల్స్ మరియు టేకింగ్ మీద పెట్టినంత కాన్సన్ట్రేషన్, కథకథనాల పై పెట్టలేదు. రొటీన్ ప్లే అండ్ బోరింగ్ ట్రీట్మెంట్, రెగ్యులర్ లవ్ డ్రామా వంటి అంశాలు ఈ సినిమాకి బాగా మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ సినిమా విజువల్స్ పరంగా మాత్రమే ఆకట్టుకుంది. కంటెంట్ పరంగా నిరుత్సాహ పరిచింది.

వ్యాసమహాభారతంలోని శకుంతల కథని కాళిదాసు నాటకీయంగా మలిచి, కొన్ని స్వీయకల్పనలు జోడించి "అభిజ్ఞాన శాకుంతలం" రాసాడు. ఆ రచన సంస్కృత వాఞ్మయ చరిత్రలో అజరామరం. ఆ కథని వెండి తెర మీదకి ఎక్కించే ప్రయత్నం చేసాడు దర్శకుడు గుణశేఖర్. ఆలోచన, ప్రయత్నం గొప్పవే. ఇంతకీ ఫలితమెలా ఉందో చూద్దాం. 

శకుంతల-దుశ్యంతుల కథ చాలా మందికి తెలుసు. అయినా క్లుప్తంగా చెప్పుకోవాలంటే.....

దూశ్యంతుడు ఒక మహారాజు. మునికాంత అయిన శకుంతలని ప్రేమించి వివాహం చేసుకుంటాడు. తన ప్రేమకి గుర్తుగా ఒక ఉంగరాన్ని ఇస్తాడు ఆమెకు. కానీ దూర్వాసముని శాపం వల్ల దుశ్యంతుడు ఆమెను మరిచిపోతాడు. ఆమెకు ప్రేమగా ఇచ్చిన ఏదైనా వస్తువుని చూసినప్పుడు మళ్లీ తనకు ఆమె గుర్తుకొస్తుందని దూర్వాసుడు శాపవిమోచనం చెప్తాడు. శకుంతల వేలికి ఉన్న ఆ వదులైన ఉంగరం ఒక రోజు నీటిలో పడిపోతుంది. అది ఒక చేప మింగుతుంది. దానిని జాలరి కోసినప్పుడు ఆ ఉంగరాన్ని గుర్తిస్తాడు. దానిని అమ్మబోతే అది రాజముద్రికగల ఉంగరమని తెలుసుకుని మహారాజు దుశ్యంతుడి సమక్షానికి తీసుకువచ్చి చూపిస్తారు. ఆ ఉంగరాన్ని చూసిన దుశ్యంతుడికి గతం గుర్తుకొస్తుంది. శకుంతలని కలిసి క్షమించమని కోరతాడు. శాప వృత్తాంతం తెలుసుకున్న శకుంతల అతనిని అంగీకరిస్తుంది. వీళ్లకి పుట్టిన కొడుకే భరతుడు. అతని పేరు మీదనే భరతఖండం వెలిసింది. 

ఈ కథని ఇప్పటి ప్రేక్షకులకి నచ్చేలా తీయాలంటే ఎంత ఎమోషనల్ గా ఉండాలి? ఎంత కసరత్తు చెయ్యాలి? ఒక పక్కన బాహుబలి, పొన్నియన్ సెల్వన్ లాంటి సినిమాలు చూసేసిన కళ్లకి ఎప్పుడో 1996లో గుణశేఖర్ తీసిన "బాల రామాయణం" ని తలపించే సెట్టింగులు, బాపు-రమణలు తీసిన ఈటీవీ భాగవతం మాదిరి గ్రాఫిక్స్ పెడితే సరిపోతుందా? ఈ లెక్క అస్సలు వేసుకోకుండా శకుంతలగా సమంత అనగానే తక్కినవేవీ ప్రేక్షకులు పట్టించుకోరు అన్న చందాన తీసిన సినిమాలాగ ఉందిది. 

మొత్తం స్టూడియో ఫ్లోర్ లో గ్రీన్ మ్యాట్ వేసి, ఏవరేజ్ గ్రాఫిక్స్ జోడించి చుట్టేసినట్టుంది తప్ప, ప్రచారం చేసుకుంటున్న బజెట్ కి తగ్గట్టుగా ఏ మాత్రం లేదు. విజువల్ గానే పెద్ద మైనస్ అనుకుంటే సంభాషణలు, ఉపకథలు కలిపి ఒక రవీంద్రభారతిలో నాటకం చూస్తున్న అనుభూతి కలిగిస్తుంది. 

ఇంద్రసభ అయితే ఏదో స్టార్ హోటల్ లాబీలాగ ఉంది. ఆర్ట్ డైరెక్షన్ కూడా అంత దయనీయంగా ఉందన్నమాట. తాను తీసిన సాంఘిక చిత్రాలకే సెట్టింగుల కోసం నిర్మాతల చేత భారీగా ఖర్చు పెట్టించిన గుణశేఖర్ తాను నిర్మాత అయ్యే సరికి పొదుపు పాటించి సెట్టింగుల మీద కాకుండా చీప్ గ్రాఫిక్స్ మీద ఆధారపడడం చూస్తుంటే జాలేస్తుంది.  

చెలికత్తెల చేత దుర్వాసముని వృత్తాంతం, ఉగ్రనేమి కథ చెప్పించడమే పెద్ద తప్పు. ఎలిమెంటిరీ స్కూల్ పిల్లలకి కథ చెప్పే టీచర్ల వాయిస్ లో ఆ చెలికత్తెలు చెపుతుంటే ప్రేక్షకులు మొహం చిట్లించి నీరసంగా గుటకలు వేస్తూ, అసహనంతో కుర్చీలోనే మెలికలు తిరగాల్సిన పరిస్థితి. 

కథనానికి అడ్డొస్తూ, ప్రేక్షకుల అటెన్షన్ ని చెడగొట్టే పనులు అస్సలు చెయకూడదనేది కనీస అవగాహన. గుణశేఖర్ లాంటి దర్శకుడు ఆ విషయాన్ని పక్కన పెట్టి అనవసర ఉపకథల జోలికి పోవడం ఆశ్చర్యం. 

సాంకేతికంగా చూస్తే సర్వం, సమస్తం కాలం చెల్లిన బాపతే అనిపిస్తాయి. మణిశర్మ సంగీతం నీరసానికి పరాకాష్ట. అసలే కథనం కాళ్లీడుస్తూ సాగుతుంటే ఆ దోషాన్ని పరిహరించాల్సిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ మరింత పరీక్ష పెడుతుంది. 

పాటలు కూడా నీరసమే. నిజానికి "ఋషివనంలోన.." మంచి సాహిత్యం. కానీ గాయక గాయినీమణులిద్దరూ గాయం చేసారు. ముఖ్యంగా చరణాల్లో ఆడ వాయిస్ హై పిచ్ లో కీచు గొంతులా మారి అసలేం పాడుతోందో అర్ధం కాదు. గాయకులని తప్పుపట్టడం కంటే ఈ శ్రుతికి ఈ గాత్రాల్ని ఎంపిక చేసుకున్న మణిశర్మనే తప్పుబట్టాలి. "మల్లిక మల్లిక" పాటొక్కటీ చూస్తున్నప్పుడు బాగుంది. 

ఇక సంభాషణల విషయానికొస్తే అస్సలు తూకం లేకుండా బలవంతంగా తెచ్చిపెట్టుకున్న గ్రాంధిక తెలుగులో రాసినట్టున్నాయి. ఎక్కడా ఒక నేచురల్ ఫ్లో లేదు. దానికి తోడు ఒక్క మోహన్ బాబును మినహాయిస్తే ఆ శైలి డైలాగ్స్ పలకగల నటీనటులు ఒక్కరూ లేరు. దానివల్ల డ్రామా మొత్తం కృతకంగా తయారయ్యి విసిగిస్తుంది. దుశ్యంతుడు చందమామని చూస్తూ ఏదో కవిత్వం లాంటి డైలాగ్ చెప్తాడు. అస్సలు పొసగక చిరాకు తెప్పిస్తుంది. 

నటీనటవర్గానికి వస్తే టైటిల్ రోల్ పొషించిన సమంత పర్వాలేదు. నిండుసభలో తనకి అవమానం జరుగుతున్నప్పుడు ఆమె కనబరిచిన నటన బాగుంది. నిజానికి ఆ సన్నివేశంలో ఏ నటి చేసినా బాగానే ఉంటుంది. ఆ సన్నివేశబలం అలాంటిది. 

దుశ్యంతుడిగా కనిపించిన దేవ్ మోహన్ చూడడానికి బాగానే ఉన్నా కీలకమైన సన్నివేశాల్లో సరిపడా కరుణరసాన్ని కురిపించలేకపోయాడు. సమంతలాంటి స్టార్డం ఉన్న నటిని శకుంతలగా పెట్టుకున్నప్పుడు దుశ్యంతుడిని కూడా ఆ స్థాయి హీరోని పెట్టుకుని ఉండాల్సింది. 

శకుంతల కథకి కణ్వమహాముని పాత్ర చాలా కీలకం. ఆ పాత్రని సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్ కి ఇచ్చి కుదించేసారు. 

దూర్వాసుడిగా మోహన్ బాబు కనిపించిన కాసేపు తెర మీద కాస్త పర్ఫార్మెన్స్ చూస్తున్నట్టు అనిపించింది. 

శివబాలాజీ కామెడీలాంటిదేదో చేసి కాసేపు విసిగించాడు. 

అల్లు అర్హ భరతుడిగా బాగానే ఉంది. అయితే అది కూడా లవకుశులు శ్రీరాముడిని అడివిలో కలిసినప్పుడు సీనులాగ ఉంది. 

ఏ రకంగా చూసుకున్నా తీసిన పద్ధతిలో ఫ్రెష్నెస్ అనేది ఇంచుకైనా కనపడదు. 

ఇలాంటి సినిమాలు ఇప్పటి పరిస్థితుల్లో తీస్తే బాహుబలిని తలదన్నేలా తీయగలగాలి. అంత బజెట్ తో తీయగలిగే పరిస్థితి లేనప్పుడు విరమించుకోవాలి. అంతే తప్ప ఎలా పడితే అలా తీస్తే జనం చూసేస్తారనుకోవడం ఓవర్ కాన్ఫిడెన్స్ అవుతుంది. ఇప్పటి ఆడియన్స్ అంచనాలు, పల్స్ ఏ మాత్రం తెలియకుండా తీసిన సినిమాకి ఉదాహరణ ఈ "శాకుంతలం".

కథేంటంటే.. విశ్వామిత్రుడు చేస్తున్న తపస్సుని భంగం చేయమని మేనక(మధుబాల)ను భూలోకానికి పంపిస్తాడు ఇంద్రుడు. అనుకున్నట్లే తన అందచందాలతో మేనక.. విశ్వామిత్రుని తప్పస్సుకి భంగం కలిగిస్తుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో వారిద్దరూ శారీరకంగాను కలుస్తారు. ఫలితంగా మేనక ఓ ఆడబిడ్డకి జన్మనిస్తుంది. ఓ మనిషి వల్ల పుట్టిన బిడ్డకి దేవలోకంలో ప్రవేశం లేకపోవడంతో ఆ చిన్నారిని భూలోకంలోనే వదిలి వెళ్లిపోతుంది మేనక. ఆ చిన్నారిని ఓ పక్షుల గుంపు మాలినీ నది తీరాన ఉన్న కణ్వ మహర్షి(సచిన్‌ ఖడేకర్‌) ఆశ్రమానికి తరలిస్తాయి.

ఆమెకు శకుంతల(సమంత) అని పేరుపెట్టి కన్న బిడ్డలా పెంచి పెద్ద చేస్తాడు కణ్వ మహర్షి. ఒకరోజు దుష్యంత మహారాజు(దేవ్‌ మోహన్‌) కణ్వాశ్రమానికి వెళ్తాడు. అక్కడ శకుంతలను చూసి తొలి చూపులోనే ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. శకుంతల కూడా దుష్యంత మహారాజుని ప్రేమిస్తుంది. గాంధర్వ వివాహంతో ఇద్దరూ ఒక్కటవుతారు.  ఆ తర్వాత వీరిద్దరి జీవితాల్లో అనుకోని సంఘటనలు జరుగుతాయి. అవేంటి? గర్భిణీగా ఉన్న శకుంతలకు దుష్యంత రాజ్యంలో జరిగిన అవమానం ఏంటి? శకుంతల గర్భంలో పెరుగుతున్న బిడ్డకు తాను తండ్రి కాదని దుష్యంతుడు ఎందుకు చెప్పాడు? శకుంతల, దుష్యంతుడు విడిపోవడానికి దుర్వాస మహాముని(మోహన్‌ బాబు) ఎలా కారణమయ్యాడు? గర్భవతిగా ఉన్న సమయంలో శకుంతల పడిన బాధలేంటి? ఆమెకు పుట్టిన బిడ్డ ఎక్కడ పెరిగాడు? తిరిగి వీరిద్దరు ఎలా ఒక్కటయ్యారు? అనేదే మిగతా కథ. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే..  కాళిదాసు రచించిన అభిజ్ఞాన శాకుంతలం నాటకం ఆధారంగా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని తెరకెక్కించాడు గుణశేఖర్‌. ఇదొక అందమైన ప్రేమ కావ్యమని అందరికి తెలిసిందే. చాలామందికి తెలిసిన కథ.  ఇలాంటి కథలకు తెరరూపం ఇవ్వడం అంటే కత్తిమీద సాములాంటిదే. ప్రేక్షకులను మైమరిపించేలా విజువల్‌ ఎఫెక్స్‌, గ్రాఫిక్స్‌ ఉండాలి. కానీ ఈ విషయంలో గుణశేఖర్‌ టీమ్‌ దారుణంగా ఫేలయింది. నాసిరకమైన త్రీడీ హంగులతో సీరియల్‌కి ఎక్కువ సినిమాకు తక్కువ అన్నట్లుగా శాకుంతలం చిత్రాన్ని తెరకెక్కించారు.  

అయితే ఇప్పటికీ మహాభారతం చదవకపోయినా.. శకుంతల అంటే ఎవరో తెలియకపోయినా..ఈ సినిమా అర్థమవుతుంది. ఒక్కో విషయాన్ని చాలా నీట్‌గా, అందరికి అర్థమయ్యేలా వివరించారు. అయితే కథను కథలాగే చెప్పడం మైనస్‌. 

ఈ రోజుల్లో కథలో వేగం, బలమైన సంఘర్షణలు, ట్విస్టులు లేకపోతే.. ప్రేక్షకులు ఆదరించడం లేదు. వారిని రెండున్నర గంటలు ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌ చేయడానికి బలమైన కథ ఉండాలి. లేదంటే మైమరిపించేలేలా సాంకేతిక హంగులద్దాలి. కానీ ఈ రెండూ శాకుంతలంలో మిస్‌ అయ్యాయి. కథ ఎక్కడా ఇబ్బంది పెట్టకుండా అలా.. వెళ్తుంది. కానీ ప్రేక్షకుడికి బోర్‌ కొడుతుంది. ఆహా..ఓహో..అనిపించేలా ఒక్కటంటే.. ఒక్క సన్నివేశం ఉండదు. 

ఫస్టాఫ్‌ మొత్తం విషయానికిస్తే.. పసిపాప శకుంతలను పక్షులు ఎత్తుకెళ్లి కణ్వాశ్రమంలో వదిలేయడం.. కణ్వ మహర్షి పెంచి పెద్ద చేయడం.. అక్కడి పక్షులు, జంతువులతో శకుంతలకు ఉన్న అనుబంధం.. దుష్యంతుడితో ప్రేమాయణం.. ఇలా సాగుతుంది. ఒక చిన్న ట్వీస్ట్‌తో ఇంటర్వెల్‌ కార్డు పడుతుంది. 

అసలు కథంతా సెకండాఫ్‌లో సాగుతుంది. దుష్యంతుడి రాజ్యానికి శకుంతల వెళ్లడం.. ఆమెకు అవమానం జరగడం.. రాజ్యంలోని మనుషులు రాళ్లతో కొట్టడం..ఆమె అక్కడి నుంచి పారిపోవడం..ఇలా చాలా సంఘటనలు సెకండాఫ్‌లో జరుగుతాయి. ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో పోలిస్తే సెకండాఫ్‌ కాస్త బెటర్‌.

శకుంతల, దుష్యంతుడు లవ్‌స్టోరీ అంతగా ఆకట్టుకోదు. అలాగే వాళ్లిద్దరి మధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ పండేందుకు బలమైన సీన్స్‌ కూడా ఉండవు.  యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలు సైతం అంత్యంత పేలవంగా సాగుతాయి. చాలా చోట్ల ఇది గ్రాఫిక్స్‌ అనే విషయం ఈజీగా తెలిసిపోతాయి. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్‌లో భరతుడిగా అల్లు అర్హ ఎంట్రీ అదిరిపోతుంది. దుష్యంతుడితో ఆమె చేసే వాదనలు ప్రేక్షకులను అలరిస్తాయి. 

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే.. శకుంతల పాత్రకు న్యాయం చేసేందుకు ప్రయత్నించింది సమంత. ప్రేమికురాలిగా, భర్తకు దూరమైన భార్యగా ఇలా డిఫెరెంట్‌ వేరియషన్స్‌ ఉన్న పాత్రలో ఆమె చక్కగా నటించింది. కానీ ఆమె డబ్బింగ్‌ మాత్రం పెద్ద మైనస్‌. ఇక దుష్యంత మహారాజుగా దేవ్‌ మోహన్‌ బాగానే సెట్‌ అయ్యాడు కానీ.. నటన పరంగా అంతగా ఆకట్టుకోలేకపోయాడు. ఆయన స్థానంలో టాలీవుడ్‌కి పరిచయం ఉన్న నటుడిని తీసుకుంటే బాగుండేమో. ఓ స్టార్‌ హీరోని పెడితే ఇంకా బాగుండేది. ఎందుకంటే సమంతతో సమానంగా ఆ పాత్రకు స్క్రీన్‌ స్పేస్‌ ఉంది. అలాంటి పాత్రకు తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు అంతగా తెలియని దేవ్‌ మోహన్‌ని ఎంచుకొని గుణ శేఖర్‌ పప్పులో కాలేశాడు.

ఇక దుర్వాస మహర్షిగా మోహన్‌ బాబు బాగా సెట్‌ అయ్యాడు. ఆయన తెరపై కనిపించేది కొద్దిసేపే అయినా.. ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. మేనకగా మధుబాలను చూడడం ఇబ్బందిగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్‌ ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చిన అల్లు అర్జున్‌ ముద్దుల తనయ అర్హ.. తన ముద్దు ముద్దు మాటలతో భరతుడి పాత్రకు న్యాయం చేసింది. తెలుగు డైలాగ్స్‌కి చక్కగా చెప్పింది. గౌతమి, అనన్యా నాగళ్ళ, జిష్షుసేన్ గుప్తా, శివ బాలాజీ, కబీర్ సింగ్, సచిన్ ఖడేకర్‌తో పాటు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు.  ఇక సాంకేతిక విషయాలకొస్తే.. మణిశర్మ సంగీతం బాగుంది. పాటలతో పాటు మంచి నేపథ్య సంగీతాన్ని అందించారు. గ్రాఫిక్స్ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్‌ పూర్తిగా తేలిపోయింది. త్రీడీ అన్నారు కానీ.. ఆ ఫీలింగ్‌ పెద్దగా కలగదు. ఎడిటింగ్‌ పర్వాలేదు. నిర్మాణ విలువలు సినిమా స్థాయికి తగ్గట్లుగా ఉన్నాయి.

సమంత (Samantha) ప్రధాన పాత్రలో గుణశేఖర్ (Gunasekhar) తెరకెక్కించిన దృశ్యకావ్యం 'శాకుంతలం' (Shaakuntalam Movie). ఇందులో దేవ్ మోహన్ (Dev Mohan) హీరో. పాన్ ఇండియా రిలీజ్ చేశారు. ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? 'యశోద' తర్వాత సమంత మరో విజయం అందుకున్నారా? లేదా? గుణశేఖర్ సినిమాల్లో వీఎఫ్ఎక్స్ వీక్ అనే విమర్శను అధిగమించారా? లేదా?

కథ (Shaakuntalam Movie Story) : విశ్వామిత్రుని తపస్సు భంగం చేయడానికి మేనక (మధుబాల)ను ఇంద్రుడు భూలోకానికి పంపిస్తాడు. తపస్సు భంగం కావడమే కాదు... వాళ్ళిద్దరూ శారీరకంగా ఒక్కటి అవుతారు. ఫలితంగా మేనక ఓ అమ్మాయికి జన్మ ఇస్తుంది. ఆ చిన్నారిని భూలోకంలో వదిలి స్వర్గానికి వెళ్ళిపోతుంది. అడవిలో చిన్నారిని చూసిన కణ్వ మహర్షి శకుంతల అని పేరు పెట్టి కన్న బిడ్డలా పెంచుతాడు. కట్ చేస్తే... శకుంతల పెద్దది అవుతుంది. 

ఓ రోజు కణ్వ మహర్షి ఆశ్రమానికి వచ్చిన దుష్యంత మహారాజు (దేవ్ మోహన్)... శకుంతల (సమంత)ను చూస్తాడు. ఒకరిపై మరొకరు మనసు పడతారు. గంధర్వ వివాహం చేసుకుని ఒక్కటి అవుతారు. రాజ్యానికి వెళ్ళిన తర్వాత సకల రాచ మర్యాదలతో ఆహ్వానించి, మహారాణిగా ప్రజలకు పరిచయం చేస్తానని చెబుతాడు. శకుంతల గర్భవతి అవుతుంది. ఎంతకూ దుష్యంతుడు రాకపోవడంతో అతడి దగ్గరకు వెళుతుంది. కణ్వ మహర్షి ఆశ్రమానికి తాను వెళ్ళిన విషయం గుర్తుంది కానీ శంకుతల ఎవరో తనకు తెలియదని దుష్యంత మహారాజు చెబుతాడు. అతడు ఎందుకు అలా చెప్పాడు? నిండు సభలో శకుంతలకు జరిగిన అవమానం ఏమిటి? ఆ తర్వాత ఏమైంది? మధ్యలో దుర్వాస మహాముని (మోహన్ బాబు) పాత్ర ఏమిటి? దుష్యంతుడు, శకుంతల చివరకు ఎలా ఒక్కటి అయ్యారు? అనేది సినిమా. 

విశ్లేషణ (Shaakuntalam Review Telugu) : వెండితెరపై 'శాకుంతలం' మొదలైన కాసేపటి ప్రేక్షకుడి మదిలో కలిగే మొదటి సందేహం... 'త్రీడీలో ఎందుకు సినిమా చూపిస్తున్నారు? టూడీలో చూపిస్తేనే బావుండేది ఏమో!?' అని! బహుశా... ఈ మధ్య కాలంలో ఇంత వరస్ట్ త్రీడీ వర్క్ ప్రేక్షకులు చూసి ఉండరు. 

కథ, కథనం, సన్నివేశాల్లో ఎంత బలం ఉంది? వంటి సంగతులు తర్వాత! 'శాకుంతలం' థియేటర్లలో అడుగుపెట్టిన ప్రేక్షకులపై పడిన మొదటి దెబ్బ... విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ & త్రీడీ వర్క్! గుణశేఖర్ ఊహలో తప్పు లేదు. కానీ, ఆ ఊహ తెరపైకి ఎంత అందంగా వచ్చింది? అనేది ముఖ్యమే కదా! ప్రేక్షకుడికి ఆ ఊహ తెలిసినపుడేగా... విజయం వరించేది! ఆయన ఊహ విజువలైజేషన్ రూపంలోకి రాలేదనేది ముమ్మాటికీ నిజం! గ్రీన్ మ్యాట్ మీద సినిమా తీసి విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్ చేయించడం అంత సులభం కాదు సుమా! ఓ సన్నివేశంలో నటీనటులు స్పష్టంగా కనిపిస్తే... మరో సన్నివేశంలో చాలా చిన్నగా కనబడతారు. అదేమి విచిత్రమో!? 

విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్, త్రీడీ వర్క్ బాలేదంటే సన్నివేశాల్లో అసలు బలం లేదు. కథలో బలమైన సంఘర్షణ లేదు. దేవ్ మోహన్, సమంత మధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ కుదరలేదు. ఓ మాట చెప్పాలి... ప్రేమకథలో, సన్నివేశాల్లో బలం కంటే హీరో హీరోయిన్స్ మధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ కుదిరితే సినిమా పాస్ అయిపోయినట్టే! ఇక్కడ అది కూడా లేదు. దాంతో సీరియల్ సాగినట్లు సన్నివేశాలు సాగాయి. రణభూమిలో యుద్ధ సన్నివేశాలు సైతం పేలవంగా సాగాయి. ఎప్పుడు అయిపోతుందా? అన్నట్లు ఉందీ సినిమా.

అందరికీ తెలిసిన కథను మళ్ళీ చెప్పడం దర్శకుడికి కత్తి మీద సాము లాంటి వ్యవహారం. అందులోనూ ఎటువంటి మలుపులు లేని అభిజ్ఞాన శాకుంతలం కథను యథాతథంగా తీయాలనుకున్నప్పుడు... ప్రతి సన్నివేశం ఓ దృశ్యకావ్యం అన్నట్లు ఉంటే తప్ప ప్రేక్షకుడ్ని థియేటర్లో కూర్చోబెట్టడం కష్టం. గుణశేఖర్ వంటి దర్శకుడికి ఇవేవీ తెలియనివి కాదు. అయితే... ఆయన లెక్క తప్పింది. దేవ్ మోహన్ బదులు తెలుగు హీరో ఎవరినైనా తీసుకుని ఉంటే బావుండేది. సమంత కంటే ఆయనకు ఎక్కువ స్క్రీన్ స్పేస్ లభించింది. సమంతను చూడాలని థియేటర్లకు వచ్చిన ప్రేక్షకులకు ఇదీ మింగుడుపడని అంశమే.  

మణిశర్మ (Mani Sharma) స్వరాలు మధ్య మధ్యలో మనసుకు ఊరట కలిగించాయి. ఆయన సంగీతం కాస్త స్వాంతన చేకూర్చింది. వరస్ట్ త్రీడీ వర్క్ కారణమో? లేక మరొకటో? సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాలేదు. నిర్మాతలు ఖర్చు పెట్టినట్టు తెరపై సన్నివేశాలు చూస్తే అర్థం అవుతూ ఉంటుంది. అయితే, వాళ్ళ ఖర్చు అంతా బూడిదలో పోసిన పన్నీరే.

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : తెలుగులో సమంత తొలి సినిమా 'ఏ మాయ చేసావె' ప్రేమకథే. అందులో ఆమె నటనకు ఎంతో మంది ముగ్దులయ్యారు. ఆ తర్వాత పలు చిత్రాల్లో సమంత అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. అయితే, శకుంతల పాత్రకు సమంత సూటవ్వలేదని అనిపిస్తుంది. సొంత డబ్బింగ్గూ మైనస్సే. ప్రేమకథ కంటే భావోద్వేగభరిత సన్నివేశాల్లో నటిగా అనుభవం చూపించారు సామ్. దేవ్ మోహన్ రూపం బావుంది కానీ నటన బాలేదు. మేనకగా మధుబాలను చూడలేం. గౌతమి, అనన్యా నాగళ్ళ, జిష్షుసేన్ గుప్తా, శివ బాలాజీ, కబీర్ సింగ్, సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్ సహా చాలా మంది తారాగణం తెరపై కనిపించారు. ఎవరూ గుర్తుంచుకునేంత రీతిలో నటన కనబరచలేదు.

దుర్వాస మహాముని పాత్రలో మోహన్ బాబు కాసేపు కనిపించారు. కంచు కంఠంతో డైలాగులు చెబుతూ సన్నివేశాలకు ప్రాణం పోశారు. పతాక సన్నివేశాల్లో శకుంతల, దుష్యంతుల కుమారుడిగా అల్లు అర్హ కనిపించారు. ఆ చిన్నారి నటన ముద్దొస్తుంది. తెలుగు డైలాగులను అర్హ చక్కగా చెప్పింది.

Gunasekhar's underwhelming 'Shaakuntalam' needed more cinematic vision to be the epic it wants to be

Gunasekhar's Shaakuntalam , based on the Kalidasa play, has been marketed as #MythologyFor Millennials. So as a thought experiment, let's drag this classic to the modern day. A beautiful woman falls for a handsome dude. He makes vows of marriage, they have sex, and he says he'll be back for her. She pines for him, but he has a bout of amnesia and forgets her - until he remembers her again. They live happily ever after. On the surface, this is a story you are going to laugh off, but what made it work was the literary form, the poetic richness in Kalidasa's writing. So to crack this on screen, you need a cinematic vision, something like what V Shantaram had when he made this story into Stree , in the 1960s. (He made an earlier version, too, but I have not seen it.) You need to expand a thin, borderline-ridiculous tale into a spectacle that fills the eyes and also the heart and mind.

Gunasekhar's film – in 3D, shot by Sekhar V Joseph – is content to aim for visual grandeur. The first time we see Shakuntala (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), she's shrouded by a cloud of butterflies. Later, there's a huge war scene with Dushyanta (Dev Mohan). Meanwhile, there's an elephant-taming moment – and so on, so forth. But there's no emotional grandeur. About this director's last film, Rudhramadevi, I said, "[The heroine] is imposing, regal. But she has nothing to play. The character is all externalities. There’s no inner life to portray. Everything is conveyed through dialogue, and it’s purely functional – there’s no music in the words." Ditto, here. Samantha has a lovely,fragile screen presence, but oddly, Shakuntala seems to register the least in her own story. All the big moments go to the others. I don't know what millennials are going to make of such a meek protagonist, who has zero agency.

Yes, "agency" is a word of this millennium, and it was not in vogue when these works were written. But that's why you need to reinterpret at least some of the text. I am not asking for Shakuntala to be a feminist. Just give her something to do that's her own, something that defines her – even if it is something as simple like pouring her thoughts out to a deer or peacock or some such thing. Otherwise, she is just the acted-upon – a passive creature whose every move is decided by the men around her, from kings to sages. You may argue that women were passive those days: look at poor Draupadi, who agreed (or had to agree) to be the wife of five brothers. But then, passivity in a protagonist is a drag on screen. The film does just that. It drags.

The screenplay is content to plod along from one plot point to the next – and it's wobbly. A bunch of asura -s come and go as they please instead of being woven into the story as a constant threat. Mani Sharma's songs are quite good, but the song sequences are picturised without any imagination and you keep reaching for an imaginary fast-forward button. But what hurts Shaakuntalam the most is the fact that the central love story does not make you feel anything – so everything that arises from it passes by without much impact. Those looking for an easy-watch spectacle may not mind. The creature effects are not bad, and there is a sense of bigness. But those looking for an emotionally affecting tale of a woman who suffers for no fault of hers may end up wishing for a Bhansali version of Kalidasa's epic.

In recent years, movies based on Indian epics have been making a big impact on the audience and people have loved them. Telugu film Shaakuntalam, directed by Gunashekhar, falls in this genre and focuses on the story between Shaakuntala and Dushyant written by Kalidasa in his play Abhijana Shakuntalam.

Menaka abandons her baby in the forest and a sage names her Shankuntala and takes her to his ashram. Shakuntala (Samantha) is raised as his own child and her entire world is the ashram, the forest and animals, like the deer and peacocks, who are her friends. Shakuntala is born to Menaka and Vishwamitra and her life is filled with woes. One day, Maharaja Dushyant (Dev Mohan) comes to their area, and they end up meeting. She falls in love with him. Her love for him is so strong that she agrees to a Gandharva Vivaha (a marriage based on mutual acceptance with no rituals or witnesses) and the marriage is consummated.

Dushyant promises to come back and take her back to the kingdom with full pomp and splendour as his wife, but he never returns. Meanwhile, Shakuntala tells her foster father about this marriage and discovers she is pregnant. Sage Durvasa comes to visit the ashram and Shakuntala, who is lost in her own world, is cursed by him. The rest of the tale will be known by many as it’s a popular story that has been told in books and other films as well.

The first half of Shaakuntalam is quite slow. It sees Samantha in very few scenes though the movie has been projected as revolving around her. As the audience starts watching the film, it feels like an animated children’s film with a lot of pretty animals and birds brought alive due to extensive VFX. It is in the second half that the story picks pace and unfolds.

Director Gunashekhar must be appreciated for attempting to make this film, but he seems to have been in a dilemma as to whether to make this film for adults or kids. The story narration is just not gripping enough to keep you engaged and, given its slow pace, it is a tedious watch. Given the title, one would have expected the story to be told in Shakuntala’s voice. Unfortunately, it is narrated by others around her in bits and pieces.

Dushyant and Shakuntala may be all heart in the first half, but there is no soul to this romance. One doesn’t connect to the characters which have been poorly written. There are other actors like Gautami, Madhoo and Prakash Raj, who make brief appearances and don’t add much to the story's proceedings. The director has gone all out to make it heavy with grand sets and VFX and has missed out on a story that would go with it. One is reminded of some telefilms and series that were made decades back.

Samantha is good in the film and we do have to give it to her for making Shaakuntalam watchable. If the director had written a stronger role for Samantha - given that this story revolved around Shakuntala - the film would have been taken several notches higher. Dev Mohan too, gave a good performance and Allu Arjun’s daughter, Allu Arha, is a delight on screen!

Shaakuntalam is an epic that leaves us yearning for the story much like Shakuntala’s yearning for Dushyant. Gunasekhar's 'Shaakuntalam' is based on Kalidasa's epic romantical 'Abhijnana Shakuntalam', a love story of King Dushyant and sage Vishwakarma and Menaka's daughter Shakuntala. Starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan in lead roles, this mythological from the pages of Mahabharat revolves around the segments of love, spell, ambition, and unity.

'Shaakuntalam' is one of the oldest poems written by the ancient Indian poet Kalidasa and directed by Gunasekhar on a much grander scale. A dream-like set with the inclusion of gods, goddesses, a king, and a sage, this fairy tale revolves around the life of King Dushyant portrayed by Dev Mohan, and about fairy Menaka and sage Vishwakarma's daughter Shakuntala portrayed by Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

Having a beautiful backdrop of the Himalayas and war sequences, the visual appeal in the film is impeccable and comes straight from the heart of a fairy book. The audience is introduced to the characters and love affair of Dushyant and Shakuntala, followed by a magical cursed spell which is broken with a sign of love in the form of Dushyant's ring uniting the two lovers.

Shaakuntalam's First Half

The first half of the film is quite slow where the viewers are introduced to the characters and witness their love affair revolving around Samantha Ruth Prabhu's character. The film looks like an animated film filled with beautiful flora and fauna and the extensive VFX in the film looks lively.

Shaakuntalam's Second Half

The second half of the film picks a slight pace, however, there is no soul of romance until the end where the romantic characters are united, however, the story is poorly connected with the lives of the leads. A brief appearance of Dev Mohan can be seen on the screen, however, the titular character remains absent with a handful of dialogues on Samantha's part.

Shaakuntalam's Cast Performances

Samantha Ruth Prabhu stands to be the only savior of the film, however, in comparison to Dev Mohan, she is mostly absent from the screen. Samantha in the hues of white looks divine as a flower-laden girl sits like a queen throughout the film.

Her soft-girl character shines through her eyes and mellow actions, where the chemistry between Samantha and Dev Mohan is perfectly captured in their pure moments. Her shy expressions carry the scenes, however, due to the lack of screen time, the titular character depended on her taking the attention of the viewers and making the film quite slow.

On the other hand, Dev Mohan's powerful performance of a fearless warrior and an honest lover at the same time will grab one's attention as he smoothly dwells into the role of King Dushyant with his muscular physique and absolute charm. There are other actors like Madhoo, Gautami, and the appearance of Prakash Raj adding their minimalistic touch and giving their characters justice.

'Shaakuntalam' is made under the direction of Gunasekhar, who did not do justice to the film. Adding charm with beautiful visualization, the mythological story looks like it came out from a children's book and not for the modern youth. The narration and portrayal of the story with no drama give a flatness to the script. Even some of the VFXs were too disconnected from the audience and might not go well with the execution the director is known for.

Final Verdict

The saving grace of the film is Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan's honest performances, as a disconnected and fast-forwarded plot with shoddy VFX at the proceedings makes the plot of the film dull.

The tale of Shakuntala and King Dushyant is one folklore from the pages of Mahabharat every kid is aware of from their grandparents. Primarily a fairytale love story that could have been portrayed in a better format did have glimpses of miraculous mythology but keenly lacked in the pattern of storytelling.

The film is released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada with the promise of the best cinematic experience to be enjoyed in theaters.

‘Shaakuntalam’ movie review: This mythological experiment is a misfire 

Samantha ruth prabhu is convincing in her portrayal of shakuntala’s resilience, but the film is a letdown with sub-par narrative, visual effects and 3d .

Director Gunasekhar’s Telugu film Shaakuntalam , a retelling of Shakuntala’s story from Mahabharata , is an ambitious experiment. The makers hope that the audience will be awed by the romance between Shakuntala and Dushyant and the origin story of king Bharath in 3D. If the contemporary audience can watch international superhero and fantasy stories, why not a tale from our epics? The intent is appreciable and the director gets Samantha Ruth Prabhu to portray Shakuntala’s resilience and the actor is convincing. But the film falls woefully short in its technical finesse and the screenplay, too, is choppy. 

One of the better segments of Shaakuntalam, though melodramatic, unfolds in the court of Dushyant (Dev Mohan), the king of the Puru dynasty. Shakuntala’s adopted mother (Gauthami) and friends (Adarsh Balakrishna and Yash Puri) from Kanva maharshi’s ashram are at a loss to help Shakuntala after Dushyant declares that he has never seen her so that he may accept her as his wife or her unborn child as his own. Shakuntala, who until then silently takes in the heartbreak and disappointment, speaks up and confronts the king, only to be humiliated. Samantha and Dev Mohan make the scene stand out.

The first hour passes in the forests, presented in a Disney-like manner, narrating how Shakuntala and her friends Anasuya and Priyamvada (Ananya Nagalla and Aditi Balan) live in tune with Nature with animals and birds responding to their conversations. These portions could have been magical; perhaps it is the visual effects or the conversion into 3D that make these forest sequences appear, to put it bluntly, superfluous. 

The depiction of the romance between Dushyant and Shakuntala also does not have the required depth or emotional heft to connect with the journeys of their characters. The forest portions also include a clash between the Kalanemi demons and Dushyant in the vicinity of the ashram, which could have benefited from better action choreography and visual effects. The disconnect with Shaakuntalam is prominent during the initial portions. 

The film begins to come into its own in the emotional scenes, beginning with Shakuntala bidding a tearful adieu to her adopted father Kanva maharshi, the deer and other animals, to take the long boat journey to the kingdom. Mani Sharma’s composition of ‘Mallika Mallika’ to show Shakuntala waiting for Dushyant through different seasons and ‘Yelelo yelelo’ with Prakash Raj as the boatman complement the mood of the narrative.

The court scene raises hopes that the film may have finally found its groove. Alas! Barring an occasional scene such as Menaka (Madhoo) lamenting over Shakuntala’s plight or the conversation between young Bharat (Allu Arha) and Dushyant, nothing really merits attention. The war between Indra Deva (Jisshu Sengupta) and the asura king (Kabir Duhan Singh) suffers from shoddy visual effects. The bar for visual effects in Indian cinema has been raised by Baahubali and RRR and it is imperative to meet that standard, if not aim higher. Shaakuntalam pales in this and the 3D experience makes it worse.

The writing is also choppy. We never truly understand the personality of Shakuntala or the bond she shares with others in the ashram or with Dushyant. Most supporting characters remain one note, as though they can be dispensed with. The Durvasa maharshi episode is effective; Mohan Babu looks the part and shows that the short-tempered rishi cannot be taken lightly. The conversation between Bharat and Dushyant begins with wit and charm only to go overboard with too many one-liners. 

The one who stands tall through the emotional segments is Samantha. After the high-on-action performances in The Family Man 2 and Yashoda , the actor takes it upon herself to show that she can showcase the vulnerability and strength of Shakuntala even in scenes that require her to barely speak a line or two. Dev Mohan as Dushyant befits the regal portrayal and Allu Arha makes an endearing debut.

Barring occasional moments, Shaakuntalam is boring and a missed opportunity. It neither comes across as a Disney-like film nor does it have the gravitas to whet the appetite for mythology among contemporary viewers.

"Shaakuntalam," a big-budget film starring Samantha, has been marketed as a must-see. Samantha heavily promoted the film. She claimed it is only comparable to Hollywood's Disney classics. Dil Raju, the film's producer, sounded so sure of himself that he held premiere screenings before the release. Director Gunasekhar stated that it will set a new benchmark.

Let's see if the movie is as good as they say it is.

Story: Shakuntala (Samantha) is a beautiful woman who lives in Rishi Kanva's ashram. When King Dushyanta (Dev Mohan) sees Shakuntala on his hunting trip, he falls madly in love with her. Shakuntala reciprocates his feelings.

Shakuntala and Dushyanta secretly wed, and Dushyanta promises to return for her, giving her a royal ring as a token of his love.

One day, when Durvasa (Mohan Babu) visits the ashram, Shakuntala forgets to greet him properly, being wrapped up in her thoughts about Dushyanta. Furious at this slight, Durvasa pronounces a curse upon Shakuntala, saying that the object of her fantasies would one day forget about her.

Pregnant with Dushyanta's child, Shakuntala travels to the capital city to find out why Dushyanta has not returned for her. Unfortunately, she loses the ring on her journey.

When she arrives at Dushyanta's court, her husband neither recognizes her nor remembers her. After being humiliated, Shakuntala moves back to the woods and gives birth to a son whom she names Bharat (Allu Arha). Will King Dushyanta ever remember her?

Artistes’ Performances: Samantha looks lovely as a spinster in the beginning of the story. She gives a mature performance in the scenes in which she is humiliated in the king's court and subsequent portions.

Dev Mohan's performance as King Dushyanta is adequate. He is handsome, but he lacks the necessary skills to appear as a warrior in action sequences.

Allu Arha, Allu Arjun's daughter, is adorable and does a fabulous job as Prince Bharat.

Mohan Babu as the easily irritated Durvasa is terrific. However, other prominent actors such as Gautami, Madhoo, Sachin Khedekar, and Ananya are given only stock dialogue and scenes.

Technical Excellence: The film is densely packed with graphics, but the visual effects are not uniformly good. While some visuals, particularly those of Kanva Maharshi's ashram, are appealing, the rest of the film is subpar to terrible. The 3D effects, in particular, are annoying.

The cinematography is adequate. Another disadvantage is the music. The songs either cause a headache or put you to sleep. The dialogue writing is stilted.

Analysis Samantha stated during a promotional interview that “Shaakuntalam” would "Disneyfie" the audience. She meant that it would provide them with the same experience as western epic dramas like Disney’s "Maleficent" did. However, the film fails to capture any of it.

Gunasekhar's idea was to tell a mythological story like "Shakuntala" (which is part of the Mahabharat as well as a separate play written by Kalidasa) to the next generation of audiences using cutting-edge technology and 3D.

Gunasekhar was unable to fully realize his vision for the historical drama "Rudhrama Devi" due to financial constraints and other factors. Therefore, everyone sympathized with him, and top actors like Samantha and producers such as Dil Raju came forward to support him in realizing the true potential of his vision. As a result, "Shaakuntalam" was born.

Despite having the best talent and resources at his disposal this time, Gunasekhar has failed miserably in making the mythological drama a compelling watch. Let's not even get started on 'riveting,' it would have been better even if it were a 'bearable' experience.

Whether you know it or not, the plot of 'Shaakuntalam' is a love story that, in today's world, lacks excitement. Mythologies, on the other hand, should be told in such a way that everyone, regardless of age, is entertained and feels connected to them.

For example, KV Reddy created 'Mayabazar' 65 years ago based on a Mahabharat subplot that has captivated audiences for generations.

Gunasekhar attempted to add depth to the plot by combining sub-stories such as "Kala Nemi" and others, but the results have been mixed. Nonetheless, some parts of the film are quite appealing. Shakuntala's ashramam world is fascinating. Samantha's birth scene and Bharat's interaction with her father, King Dushyant, are both handled well. The aesthetics are another good part. Plus, a couple of portions in the second half are better.

Overall, "Shaakuntalam" falls short on all counts, whether as a visual extravaganza or as a good mythological drama. The narration is tedious, and the 3D effects are dreadful. The ‘soul’ is missing in this glitzy attempt.

Shaakuntalam On Amazon Prime Video Movie Review: A Dull And Anachronistic Film That Can’t Be Saved By An In-Form Samantha

Shaakuntalam ’s shoddy VFX is not its most grievous fault. Nor are the performances. It is the lack of artistic intention, of directorial vision , that undoes this mythological film. This should be surprising, given that this is from the director that made one of the quintessential masala classics, Okkadu in 2003 (endlessly remade in multiple languages, but never equalled), and followed it up with the ambitious, if uneven Arjun (2004) . 

It is instructive to compare this Samantha-starrer to Okkadu , despite belonging to a vastly different genre—there too, the Charminar was recreated with a marriage of VFX and sets. But the romantic sweep of the scene in which Mahesh Babu and Bhoomika banter while lounging atop the structure—a scene which made a new generation fall in love with the monument— finds no counterpart here, in what is supposed to be a romantic story. How are we supposed to believe that their love is something more than a momentary attraction if we see no dimensions to these characters?

Shaakuntalam is unconvincing, and consequently, interminably boring. The old Telugu mythological stories stemmed from theatrical plays, and worked because of their commitment to pitch and genre (even if they sometimes contained multiple genres in the same film)— Mayabazar (1936) was a comedy, Lava Kusa (1963) was a melodrama. Actors like NTR, Savithri, and SVR came through these traditions and were unafraid to go big on these emotions, infusing them with earnestness. 

It is evident that most actors in Shaakuntalam are struggling with the blue screen environment, and hence, unable to locate the pitch to go for with their performances. But I think it also has to do with a lack of conviction in the melodrama—you can almost see them thinking, like the students in Rang De Basanti (2006) trying to understand the conviction of the historical figures that they’re playing, ”how do I make this work in 2023?” Samantha Ruth Prabhu is an exception, and almost redeems the film with her performance, which has a palpable weight to it—particularly with the internal conflict when she begins to fall in love with Dushyant and the pain of betrayal when he rejects her, though even she seems to be struggling with some of the mythological-speak. 

There is an attempt here to straddle the line between the assertive Shakuntala in the Mahabharata and the passive, demure Shakuntala in Kalidasa’s Abhignana Shakunthalam , but the film quickly undercuts any artistic intention by cutting away to unengaging sequences of war that seem to have unclear stakes. The environment design—particularly Dushyanta’s big city—is unconvincing because the size of every gate, statue, and expanse is blown up to a scale where subconsciously, you know it would serve no function to its citizens, that this is not a world that exists independently of our experience of it when the camera turns away.

And then there’s the anachronism—at what is supposed to be the highest moment of passion, Dushyanta tells Shakunthala that he “wants to be born to her, be raised by her, and then rule the world”. At the end of the film, after her enormous trials, she is told that her purpose of existence was to give birth to the heir of the kingdom. That the film ultimately reduces Shakunthala to a vessel for propagating a dynasty speaks to the fact that the primary object of interest isn’t her, but the mythological milieu being evoked by the film. In the world-building, there is some promise early on—scenes of animals (well-realized in photorealistic CG, in contrast to the rest of the film) coexisting peacefully with each other, prey and predator, along with humans—but these are only sparks in what is mostly a dull affair. 

There is one scene in Shaakuntalam where I could catch a glimpse of a film that could have worked—when she, heavily pregnant, gets on a boat helmed by Sarangi (Prakash Raj) to be taken to Dushyanta’s kingdom. There isn’t a single line exchanged between Samantha and Prakash Raj, but he breaks out into a song, ‘Yelelo Yelelo’ , in which he hints at the tribulations that await the young, hopeful woman. There is a real pathos to the song, helped by Prakash Raj ’s commitment to melodramatic song-acting, that plays on our knowledge of what awaits the innocent Shakunthala. It works, despite the bad CGI. This is what the rest of the film needed.

What Is It About?

Shakuntala was born to Menaka and Vishwamitra but raised by Sage Kanwa in his ashram. The Hastinapur king Dushyanta falls in love with her and gets married to him in a gandharwa vivaaham. He promises to take her to his kingdom later but never comes back. The pregnant Shakuntala visits him and gets shocked when he denies knowing her. What made him do that and how Shakuntala wins him back is all about Shaakuntalam.

Performances

Samantha tried her best but she did not really fit into the role. Her slang dominates her presence leaving the performance an ordinary one. Dev Mohan as Dushanta is not very impressive. Not just him, but other actors like Jishu Sen Gupta, Sachin Khedkar, and Kabir Duhan Singh in their characters appear artificial due to their non-Telugu backgrounds.

Allu Arha gave one wonderful performance in the role of Bharata. Her presence and the dialogues are very good. Madhubala, Mohan Babu, Ananya Nagalla, and others did fine in their respective roles.

Shaakuntalam is a known story and what the audience expects from the movie is impressive storytelling. Shaakuntalam failed in it miserably. The poor VFX work exaggerated poetic dialogues, and an extremely sluggish narration made Shaakuntalam a mess. None of the songs were impressive. The background music is good in parts. The run time of nearly two and a half hours is a bane to Shaakuntalam.

The visuals appear completely artificial and sketchy in an attempt to make every frame angelic and fairy. The war scenes and the empire visuals flaunt the mediocre VFX work. In many scenes in the second half, the faces appear pale and lifeless with dominant yellow hues.

The story of Shakuntala and her love story with King Dushyanta is existential in mythology and there are no tweaks or twists that a filmmaker can do to make it more interesting or otherwise. It is all about presenting it in a captivating way with great visuals and dialogue. Unfortunately, Shaakuntalam tells us the story in the most boring way possible.

The first half of Shaakuntalam is filled with the ashram backdrop, King Dushyanta’s heroism, and Shakuntala’s life. The ashram visuals are subpar with realistic graphics work. It is more like watching a stylized cartoon work all along. The action scenes in the first half and the war sequences in the second half appear comical.

The drama fails to establish an emotional connection and gives an artificial feel throughout the film. The narration itself is slow and dragged in most parts. The songs could not impress and even break the pace that is already slow. The intention to present it poetically made it more superficial in every bit. At least the mini informative stories that are induced to give a sneak peek into some characters were shown in comic illustrations to spare the audience from the run time and poor graphics.

Samantha looked and acted fine but her utterance of dialogue remains one of the biggest drawbacks. When a seasoned actor like Mohan Babu and a newbie like Allu Arha is pronouncing the words as they should be, the lead actor Samantha’s non-Telugu slang sounded odd and annoying.

The only positive factor in the movie is Allu Arha. She is cute and impressive for her first film. She made her presence felt and could become one of the busiest child actors.

The second half does not change anything except it gets slower to test the patience. The lack of Telugu actors in the main characters is a huge drawback as it gives a feel of watching a dubbing serial most of the time. The war scenes were not intense, and the emotional scenes leave no impact at all.

Overall, a terribly slow and boring narration with poor graphics work leaves this Shaakuntalam completely unengaging and tiresome.

This time he chose a literature work by the great Kalidasa so let us see if this has helped him.

Story Indra (Jisshu), the God of the Devas starts getting worried looking at the penance of Sage Viswamitra and he sends Menaka (Madhoo) to seduce him. This leads to the birth of a girl but Menaka abandons the girl as humans are not allowed in heaven. The girl is found by Kanva Maharshi (Sachin) near his hermitage and he names her Shakuntala (Samantha). Few years later, Shakuntala comes across the powerful king Dushyanta (Dev Mohan) in a forest and both fall in love. They also get married in the forest following the Gandharva tradition. Dushyanta promises Shakuntala he would take her back to the kingdom after sometime and leaves. However, he has the curse of Sage Durvasa (Mohan Babu) due to which he forgets Shakuntala after reaching his kingdom. Meanwhile, Shakuntala waits eternally for Dushyanta’s return and decides to win back her love by visiting him. What happens from there forms the rest.

Performances Samantha put in a good effort to fit into the bill of Shakuntala but it must be said that her dubbing and her muscular physique made her look too strong than soft for the role. That elegance was missing. However, the effort needs appreciation. Dev Mohan has shown good potential and he did a decent job. Sachin Khedekar was neat. Mohan Babu was brief but good. Aditi, Ananya, Gautami, Madhoo were brief. Prakash Raj was perfect. The one to watch out for is Allu Arha, she was captivating. Harish was okay. The others like Subbaraju, Jisshu, Varshini were not used to their fullest.

Crew The director came up with a story which runs on a thin line and though it has great potential to become a touching love story he could not package it right. The script was quite weak with flaws while the screenplay was loose. The dialogues were good at few places but didn’t carry the authenticity of a period era. The background score was okay and songs couldn’t do much as their placement was not right. Cinematography was okay. Editing was poor. Costumes and art department scored few marks. Action sequences were horrible. VFX was a disaster. The others did their bit as required.

Deeper Look While attempting a love story and that too on a period backdrop, two things are very important - The chemistry between the lead pair, the technical and visual standards. When these two fail to work, the whole project collapses. It appears that the same has happened here. The idea of adapting the great play of Kalidasa is admirable but it takes a lot of expertise and skill to execute it in a way that appeals to the audience on the silver screen. Gunasekhar did try to give a honest shot but it was clear that he lacked the vision and the ability to narrate it in the right way. The very thought of having Dev Mohan with Sam was a goof up as the saleable chemistry went haywire. Similarly, he had to ensure that the graphics and visuals were convincing enough to convey a grandeur and ambience but that was completely amateurish. The film takes off on a decent note and it proceeds with the required scenes but there was nothing really wow. The interval bang was expected and the second half brings down the whole graph. The length was unnecessary and the visuals were clumsy. Battle sequences were a sore to the eyes. Overall, while one can really relate to the thought of Gunasekhar to adapt a masterpiece, it appears he was too ambitious to do something which was way beyond his reach. At the box office, the film might have some openings but how far it will really sustain is a big question.

సమంత, దేవ్ మోహన్ జంటగా గుణశేఖర్ దర్శకత్వంలో తెరకెక్కిన భారీ పౌరాణిక చిత్రం శాకుంతలం నేడు ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. మరి ఈ సినిమా ఎంతవరకు మెప్పించిందో రివ్యూ చూద్దాం.

దుష్యంతుడు (దేవ్ మోహన్) మహా రాజు. ఒకసారి వేటకు వెళ్లినప్పుడు కణ్వ మహర్షి (సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్) ఆశ్రమాన్ని సందర్శిస్తాడు. అక్కడ ఉన్న శకుంతల (సమంత)ను చూసి ఆమె సౌందర్యానికి ఆకర్షితుడవుతాడు. శకుంతల కూడా దుష్యంతుడి ప్రేమలో పడుతుంది. ఇద్దరూ గాంధర్వ వివాహం చేసుకుని ఒక్కటి అవుతారు. ఆ తర్వాత వీరి జీవితాల్లో జరిగిన సంఘటనలు ఏమిటి ?, దుష్యంతుడు అసలు శకుంతలను ఎలా మర్చిపోతాడు ?, చివరకు వీరి ప్రేమ కథ ఎలా సాగింది ? ఎలా ముగిసింది ? లాంటి విషయాలు తెలుసుకోవాలంటే వెండితెర పై ఈ సినిమాను చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఈ సినిమా చూస్తున్నంత సేపు మహాభారతంలోని ఆది పర్వంలోకి వెళ్లి.. శకుంతలా దుష్యంతుల ప్రేమ గాధను, బాధను కళ్ళ ముందు చూస్తున్న బావన కలుగుతుంది. ముఖ్యంగా 3డి విజువల్స్ సినిమా స్థాయిని పెంచాయి. అలాగే ప్రేక్షకులకు ఆ అడవి ప్రాంతంలోకి వెళ్లి ఆ లోకంలో విహరిస్తున్న ఫీలింగ్ కలుగుతుంది. మొత్తమ్మీద అద్భుతమైన విజువల్స్ తో పాటు భారీ సాంకేతిక విలువలతో తెరకెక్కించబడటమే ఈ సినిమా ప్రధాన బలం. ప్రధాన పాత్రల ఎమోషన్ అండ్ పెయిన్ ఫ్యామిలీ ప్రేక్షకులకు కొంతవరకు కనెక్ట్ అవుతుంది.

ఇక సమంత తన పరిపక్వతమైన నటనతో ఈ చిత్రంలో ఉత్తమమైన నటనను కనబర్చారు. ముఖ్యంగా క్లిష్టమైన కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె తన మార్క్ నటనతో సినిమాకే హైలెట్ గా నిలిచారు. కీలక పాత్రలో నటించిన మోహన్ బాబు తన మ్యానరిజమ్స్ తో తన శైలి నటనతో బాగా ఆకట్టుకున్నారు. హీరోగా నటించిన దేవ్ మోహన్ తన పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశారు. ఆయనకు సంబంధించిన కొన్ని యాక్షన్ సీక్వెన్సెస్ లో దేవ్ మోహన్ నటన సినిమాకే ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తోంది. మిగిలిన నటీనటులు సచిన్ ఖేడేకర్, ప్రకాష్ రాజ్, గౌతమి, కబీర్ బేడీ తదితరులు తమ పాత్రలకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఎమోషనల్ గా లవ్ స్టోరీతో సాగే ఈ సినిమా విజువల్ పరంగా కొంతవరకు ఆకట్టుకున్నా.. కథ పరంగా ఎలాంటి కొత్తదనం లేదు. అలాగే ఫస్టాఫ్ ను ఆసక్తికరమైన విజువల్స్ తో అక్కడక్కడ కాస్త ఇంట్రెస్ట్ గా నడిపినా.. స్లోగా సాగే సీన్స్ తో కొన్నిచోట్ల స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ను నెమ్మదిగా నడిపారు. సెకెండ్ హాఫ్ లో కూడా కొన్ని సీన్స్ చాలా స్లోగా సాగుతాయి. ముఖ్యంగా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో సమంత పాత్ర గర్భవతి అయ్యాక వచ్చే సీన్స్ ను అనవసరంగా ల్యాగ్ చేస్తూ డ్రైవ్ చేయడం వల్ల, ఆ సాగదీత సీన్స్ లో ఇంట్రస్ట్ మిస్ అయింది.

అలాగే మధ్యమధ్యలో వచ్చే ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ కట్స్ కూడా కొంత ఇబ్బంది పెడుతాయి. ఇంకా టైట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఉండి ఉంటే ఈ సినిమా కొంతవరకు అయినా సంతృప్తికరంగా ఉండి ఉండేది. కానీ, రొటీన్ ప్లేతో బోరింగ్ ట్రీట్మెంట్ తో ఈ పౌరాణిక చిత్రం సాగడంతో సినిమా అవుట్ పుట్ బాగా దెబ్బ తింది. మెయిన్ గా సినిమాలో ప్రేమ కథలో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ బాగా పెట్టి ఉండాల్సింది. ఇంకా టైట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మరియు ఎంగేజింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ ను ప్లే లో డిజైన్ చేసుకోవాల్సింది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం:

దర్శకుడు గుణశేఖర్ భారీ విజువల్స్ తో భారీ చిత్రాన్ని తెరకెక్కించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను అద్భుత విజువల్స్ తో బాగా తెరకెక్కించినప్పటికీ.. కథాకథనాలను మాత్రం ఆ స్థాయిలో ఆయన రాసుకోలేదు. మణిశర్మ అందించిన సంగీతం ఏవరేజ్ గా ఉంది. ఆయన అందించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ కూడా అంత గొప్పగా ఏమీ లేదు. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ చాలా బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని ప్రతి సన్నివేశాన్ని భారీ విజువల్స్ తో చాలా బ్యూటిఫుల్ గా చిత్రీకరించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ ఓకే. కాకపోతే.. అక్కడక్కడా ఉన్న కొన్ని సాగతీత సీన్స్ ను తగ్గించాల్సింది. నిర్మాతలు ఎక్కడా కాంప్రమైజ్ కాకుండా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. నిర్మాణ విలువులు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

పౌరాణిక ప్రేమ జంట ‘శకుంతలా దుష్యంతుల’ ప్రేమ కథకు 3డి ఎఫెక్ట్ అద్ది.. బ్యూటిఫుల్ విజువల్స్ తో దర్శకుడు గుణశేఖర్ ఈ శాకుంతలం చిత్రాన్ని ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు తీసుకొచ్చాడు. అయితే, గుణశేఖర్ విజువల్స్ మరియు టేకింగ్ మీద పెట్టినంత కాన్సన్ట్రేషన్, కథకథనాల పై పెట్టలేదు. రొటీన్ ప్లే అండ్ బోరింగ్ ట్రీట్మెంట్, రెగ్యులర్ లవ్ డ్రామా వంటి అంశాలు ఈ సినిమాకి బాగా మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ సినిమా విజువల్స్ పరంగా మాత్రమే ఆకట్టుకుంది. కంటెంట్ పరంగా నిరుత్సాహ పరిచింది.

Shaakuntalam is one of those projects, which sound exciting as an idea and on paper, but turn out to be very unexciting, when made into a film. Filmmaker Gunasekhar, best known for directing Mahesh Babu ’s Okkadu and Arjun, continues to bite more than he can chew and Shaakuntalam is the best example as his form continues to deteriorate with each outing. Eight years since the release of his last film Rudhramadevi, which was another historical action drama, Gunasekhar returns with Shaakuntalam, which is easily his weakest work in the last decade. Shaakuntalam is the story of Shakuntala ( Samantha Ruth Prabhu ), who has been deprived of love since birth. Born as the daughter of Menaka and Vishwamitra, she’s abandoned by her mother and left in the forest, where she is spotted and raised by Kanva Maharishi (Sachin Khedekar). Cut to many years later, king Dushyanta meets Shakuntala in the forest, and it’s love at first sight. Smitten by the valour and charisma of Dushyanta, Shakuntala, too, is deeply mesmerised by him and eventually falls in love with him.

However, she fears her curse of being deprived of love all her life would take away the life she dreams with Dushyanta. Contrary to her fears, Dushyanta secretly marries Shakuntala and promises to give her a royal welcome in his kingdom as soon as he's done with war duties. As Shakuntala waits for Dushyanta to return, months pass by and she becomes pregnant.

One day, lost in the thoughts of her husband, Shakuntala ignores the arrival of Durvasa Maharishi (Mohan Babu) to their ashram and she earns his wrath. He curses Dushyanta will be erased of all the memories of Shakuntala. How does Shakuntala prove that she’s Dushyanta’s wife and wins him over, again? This forms the crux of the story.

Right from the writing to the making and even the visual effects, there’s nothing impressive in Shaakuntalam. It mostly looks like a project that was haphazardly put together without much focus on creating a world that can draw audiences in and keep them hooked till the last frame. A large portion of the film relies on visual effects and the film is big time let down by the tacky output which is mostly amateurish. There’s not a single scene in a film of this scale that leaves you in awe, and that’s what makes Shaakuntalam a major misfire. If not for Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who does all the heavy lifting and tries her best to hold the film together, this would’ve been easily the biggest disappointments of the year.

Samantha is sincere and earnest as Shakuntala, who is strongly portrayed through a performance that’s one of the highlights of the film. In the second half, Samantha is brilliant in a scene which requires her to break down emotionally. She brings out both the helplessness and vulnerability of her character so effectively. Dev Mohan as Dushyanta also does a pretty neat job. Allu Arha, Allu Arjun’s daughter, makes a cute debut and it’s amazing how effortlessly she mouths her lines with confidence. The rest of the supporting cast has nothing much to contribute.

Two of the most crucial aspects of the film – war sequences and 3D – are laughable to say the least. War sequences feel so rushed as though they were shot in fast forward mode and come across as spoof on most occasions. The 3D, which was mostly dark, ruined the overall experience without a doubt.

Vikram Thangalaan First Review Telugu: తమిళం లోనే కాదు తెలుగులోను అనేక మంది అభిమానులను సంపాదించుకున్నారు చియాన్ విక్రమ్. సినిమా కోసం ప్రాణం పెట్టి మరి నటిస్తారు. పాత్రలోకి దూరిపోయేందుకు ఎంత రిస్క్ అయిన చేస్తారు. అందుకు పర్ఫెక్ట్ నిదర్శనాలే శివపుత్రుడు, అపరిచితుడు, ఐ మూవీలోని మేకవర్.

విభిన్న గెటప్

ఇప్పుడు మరో విభిన్న గెటప్పులో చియాన్ విక్రమ్ నటించిన సినిమానే తంగలాన్. చియాన్ విక్రమ్ నటిస్తున్న ఈ పీరియాడిక్ యాక్షన్ మూవీకి ప్రముఖ దర్శకుడు పా రంజిత్ తెరకెక్కించారు. రజనీకాంత్‌తో కబాలి, కాలాతోపాటు స్పారట్ట వంటి చిత్రాలను డైరెక్ట్ చేసిన పా రంజిత్ తంగలాన్‌కు దర్శకత్వం వహించడంతో సినిమాపై అంచనాలు పెరిగిపోయాయి.

తంగలాన్ ఫస్ట్ రివ్యూ

అంతేకాకుండా ఈ సినిమా నుంచి విడుదలైన గ్లింప్స్, పోస్టర్స్ అదిరిపోయాయి. ముఖ్యంగా పాత్రల మేకోవర్ చాలా డిఫరెంట్‌గా ఉంది. ఇక విక్రమ్ నటన గురించి ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పాల్సిన పని లేదు. పాత్రలో పరకాయ ప్రవేశం చేసి నటించారని ఆ గ్లింప్స్ చూస్తేనే అర్థమైపోతుంది. ఇదిలా ఉంటే తాజాగా తంగలాన్ మూవీకి ఫస్ట్ రివ్యూ ఇచ్చారు సినిమా మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ జీవీ ప్రకాష్ కుమార్.

రికార్డులకు రెడీగా ఉండు

తంగలాన్ మూవీ మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ అయిన జీవీ ప్రకాష్ ఈ సినిమాకు సంబంధించి ఓ ట్వీట్ చేశారు. తంగలాన్ సినిమా గురించి రాసుకొచ్చారు. "అద్భుతమైన సినిమా. బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్‌ స్కోర్ ఇప్పటికే పూర్తి చేశాను. త్వరలోనే మైండ్ బ్లోయింగ్ ట్రైలర్ రాబోతుంది. రెడీగా ఉండండి. ఇండియన్ సినిమా రికార్డులకు రెడీగా ఉండు" అని జీవీ ప్రకాష్ ఎక్స్‌లో తెలిపారు.

వైవిధ్యం ఉన్నప్పటికీ

దీంతో తంగలాన్ సినిమా బాగుంటుందనే నమ్మకం చాలా కలిగింది. ఇక విక్రమ్ ఫ్యాన్స్ అయితే తెగ సంబరపడిపోతున్నారు. నటనలో వైవిధ్యం ఉన్నప్పటికీ విక్రమ్ చాలా ఫెయిల్యూర్స్ చూడాల్సి వచ్చింది. అందుకే విక్రమ్‌కు ఈ సినిమాతో అయినా బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ పడాలని అభిమానులు ఆశపడుతున్నారు.

35 కిలోలు తగ్గిన విక్రమ్

ఇక జీవీ ప్రకాష్ ట్వీట్‌కు తంగలాన్ ట్రైలర్ కోసం వెయిటింగ్ అని అభిమానులు, నెటిజన్స్ కామెంట్స్ పెడుతున్నారు. కాగా ఎప్పుడూ పాత్రల కోసం ఎలాంటి కష్టమైన పడే విక్రమ్ తంగలాన్ కోసం 35 కేజీలు తగ్గారట. అలాగే ఇందులో విక్రమ్‌కు ఎలాంటి డైలాగ్స్ ఉండవని, సేమ్ శివపుత్రుడు మూవీలోని పాత్రలా ఉంటుందని, అందులోలాగే తంగలాన్‌లో అరుస్తానని ఓ ఇంటర్వ్యూలో హీరో చెప్పారు.

ఆగస్ట్ 15న రిలీజ్

తంగలాన్ సినిమా కోలార్ గోల్డ్ ఫైల్స్ నేపథ్యంలో సాగే పీరియాడికల్ డ్రామా. ఈ సినిమాను స్టూడియో గ్రీన్, జియో స్టూడియోస్ బ్యానర్స్‌పై ప్రొడ్యూసర్ కేఈ జ్ఞానవేల్ రాజా నిర్మిస్తున్నారు. తంగలాన్‌లో విక్రమ్‌తోపాటు మాళవిక మోహనన్, పార్వతీ తిరువోతు హీరోయిన్లుగా నటిస్తున్నారు. తంగలాన్ మూవీని ఆగస్ట్ 15న విడుదల చేస్తున్నట్లు మేకర్స్ ప్రకటించారు.

ధ్రువ నక్షత్రం మూవీ

ఇదిలా ఉంటే, చియాన్ విక్రమ్ ఈ సినిమానే కాకుండా ధ్రువ నక్షత్రం అనే మరో మూవీ చేస్తున్నాడు. దీనికి డైరెక్టర్ గౌతమ్ వాసుదేవ్ మీనన్ దర్శకత్వం వహిస్తున్నారు. కాగా తంగలాన్ నిర్మాత కేఈ జ్ఞానవేల్ రాజా తెలుగులో బడ్డీ అనే మరో సినిమాను నిర్మిస్తున్నారు. ఈ మూవీలో హీరోగా అల్లు శిరీష్ చేస్తున్నాడు. ఇటీవల బడ్డీ టీజర్ లాంచ్ ఈవెంట్ హైదరాబాద్‌లో ఘనంగా నిర్వహించారు.

With “ Kalki 2898 AD ,” Telugu cinema filmmaker Nag Ashwin rifles through a century of sci-fi and fantasy extravaganzas to create a wildly uneven mashup of everything from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” to Marvel Comics movies, underpinned by elements from the Hindu epic poem “Mahabharata.” It’s billed, perhaps optimistically, as the first chapter of the Kalki Cinematic Universe franchise — which makes it part of a larger trend, since it launches the same weekend that Kevin Costner’s multi-film “Horizon” saga does in the U.S.

Bhairava (Telugu superstar Prabhas ), a roguish bounty hunter who rolls in a tricked-out faux Batmobile equipped with a robotic co-pilot, yearns to earn enough “credits” to buy his way into the Complex, where he can crash the best parties, ride horses through open fields and avoid all the debt collectors hounding him in Kasi. He seizes on the opportunity to make his dreams come true when a colossal reward is posted for the capture of SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), an escapee from the Complex’s Project K lab, where pregnant women are routinely incinerated after being drained of fluids that can ensure Yaskin’s longevity.

While on the run through a desert wasteland, en route to the rebel enclave known as Shambala, SUM-80 is renamed Sumati by newfound allies and, more important, protected by the now-ancient Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), who has evolved into an 8-foot-tall sage with superhuman strength, kinda-sorta like Obi-Wan Kenobi on steroids, and a sharp eye for any woman who might qualify as the Mother, the long-prophesized parent of — yes, you guessed it — Kalki.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.

The world is a wasteland, dead bodies illuminated by covering the earth to the luridly lit horizon, drums thundering and voices rising in a choral tide; Kalki 2898 AD is massive from the word go. Enter Krishna, mounted on a chariot drawn by four suitably apocalyptic black horses, to curse the battle’s seemingly sole survivor, Ashwarthama, for the sin of shooting an unborn child. Like many of the characters blundering through Nag Ashwin ’s stupendous Telugu-language epic, the valiant Ashwarthama lacks a moral framework.

There is always someone claiming that the worst of times is now, of course; accordingly, in real life, there have been quite a few Kalki pretenders. And despite the date in the title, Kalki 2898 AD could be read as a series of allusions to current issues: its skein of plot lines includes a man-made climate crisis, femicide, the erasure of democratic freedoms and an obscene gulf between rich and poor. All that. Or, you can take it as a humungous space opera combining Indian mythology with bits and bobs from Star Wars , Mad Max , Blade Runner and The Handmaid’s Tale , whipping them together in a great cinematic froth. Take your pick. Either way, it is overwhelming. And this is just episode one.

Skip forward past the titles. Shazam, it’s 6,000 years since Ashwarthama stamped through that field of the dead. There is now just one city, Kashi, full of poverty-stricken grafters who scrabble at the gates of The Complex, the ultimate in gated estates – it is an inverted pyramid, so vast that the park on the flat roof includes an ocean – begging for the leaders’ indulgence.  These people would kill each other for an apple. 

Somewhere beyond the endless desert there is, however, a rebel settlement called Shambala, where the belief holds that a blessed mother will arrive one day to give birth to a savior who will set everything to rights. (What this film shows, above all, is how much myth is shared across cultures.) 

She duly arrives in the comely person of Sumathi ( Deepika Padukone ), under the protection of the now ancient Ashwarthama. In a plum bit of casting, he is played by 81-year-old Bollywood cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan , wearing the pain of millennia and looking very much like Gandalf. He even carries a magic staff that, like most of the props, is inclined to burst into flames. 

Of course, the monsters of The Complex are also on Samarthi’s tail, as is a battle-worn bounty hunter called Bhairava who hopes to sell her to The Complex. Bhairava is out for himself and the devil take the hindmost, but as played by the hugely popular pan-Indian star Prabhas , he is never less than likable, funny, impressively invincible and undeniably hot. Think Harrison Ford in Star Wars , with that cheeky grin; like Han Solo, Bhairava even has a sidekick robot. He may be a very naughty boy, but he has the heft of a hero in the making: watch this very large, very hectic space.

The designers of that space have, of course, had a field day. Like Kashi – or, indeed, like the world of Mad Max – Shambala is a mix of high-tech forcefields, knocked-together steampunk vehicles and medieval weaponry. There is a tremendous amount of spectacular fighting, often including flying; fist fights bring down entire buildings while leaving the combatants without a scratch. This is the art of the impossible, brought to us by CGI that, unlike many of its western equivalents, is given every chance to go large. Why try to disguise what you can celebrate? 

So this is how the world ends, not with a whimper but a great many massive bangs, battles and increasingly complicated alliances, betrayals and stirring songs. It is terrific, cathartic fun – and, given that Vishnu’s next avatar has apparently yet to be born, what is described in the marketing blurbs as the Kalki Cinematic Universe can be expected to rage, burn and rip-roar for a good few editions yet, leaving audiences happily flattened with exhaustion. What can I say? All power to that burning staff.
