A Sample Sober Living Home Business Plan Template

A sober living house (SLH), which is also known as a sober home is a facility that provides safe housing and supportive, structured living conditions for people moving out of drug rehabilitation programs. Sober living houses serve as a transitional environment between such programs and mainstream society. Many sober living facilities also accept people who are in recovery from substance use disorders but have not recently completed a rehabilitation program.

Available statistics show that in the United States of America alone, there are about 5,623 licensed and registered outpatient and inpatient facilities handling drug, alcohol, and substance addicts and they are responsible for employing about 126,263 employees. The industry rakes in a whooping sum of $10 billion annually with an annual growth rate of 4.9 percent.

How to Write a Sober Living Home Business Plan?

Writing a sober living home business plan is a crucial step toward the success of your business. Here are the key steps to consider when writing a business plan:

1. Executive Summary

An executive summary is the first section to offer an overview of the business plan. However, it is written after the entire business plan is ready and summarizes each section of your plan.

Here are a few key components to include in your executive summary:

A brief introduction to your business

Start your executive summary by briefly introducing your business to your readers. It must include the information like name of your sober living home, location, etc. For example,

Serenity Haven Business Description

Welcome to Serenity Haven, a beacon of hope and recovery in the realm of sober living. In a world where the journey to wellness is often challenging, Serenity Haven stands as a sanctuary committed to fostering healing, growth, and the transformation of lives.

Our vision goes beyond providing shelter; we aspire to create a nurturing environment where individuals on the path to recovery find solace, support, and the strength to reclaim their lives.

As we embark on this venture, our commitment to compassionate care and community well-being is at the core of everything we do. Join us in the journey towards serenity, where every step is a stride toward a brighter, sober future.

Market Opportunity

Summarize your market research, including market size, growth potential, and marketing trends. Highlight the opportunities in the market and how your business will fit in to fill the gap.

Products and Services

Highlight the sober living home services you offer. The USPs and differentiators you offer are always a plus.

For instance, you may include residential accommodations, meal services, 24/7 support staff, drug testing, etc.

Marketing & Sales Strategies

Outline your sales and marketing strategies—what marketing platforms you use, how you plan on acquiring customers, etc.

Financial Highlights

Briefly summarize your financial projections for the initial years of business operations. Include capital or investment requirements, associated startup costs, projected revenues, and profit forecasts.

Call to Action

Summarize your executive summary section with a clear CTA, for example, inviting investors to discuss the potential business investment.

Ensure your executive summary is clear, concise, easy to understand, and jargon-free.

2. Business Overview

The business overview section of your business plan offers detailed information about your business. The details you add will depend on how important they are to your business. Yet, business name, location, business history, and future goals are some of the foundational elements you must consider adding to this section. For example,

Business Overview of Serenity Haven

Nestled in the vibrant city of Denver, Colorado, Serenity Haven stands as a beacon of hope for individuals on the path to recovery from substance abuse.

Our sober living home in this picturesque city embraces a holistic approach to recovery, providing a supportive and nurturing environment focused on sobriety, personal growth, and community connection.

Beyond being a residence, Serenity Haven is a community actively encouraging community integration, life skills development, and aftercare planning. We are committed to guiding individuals in Denver on their journey to rediscover serenity, rebuild their lives, and embrace sustained sobriety.

This section should provide a thorough understanding of your business, its history, and its plans. Keep this section engaging, precise, and to the point.

3. Market Analysis

The market analysis section of your business plan should offer a thorough understanding of the industry with the target market, competitors, and growth opportunities. You should include the following components in this section.

Target market

Start this section by describing your target market. Define your ideal customer and explain what types of services they prefer. Creating a buyer persona will help you easily define your target market to your readers.

Market size and growth potential

Describe your market size and growth potential, and whether you will target a niche or a much broader market.

For example, there are a total of 17,943 sober living homes in the United States, so it is important to know in which location you will make your sober living home business.

Regulatory Environment

List regulations and licensing requirements that may affect your sober living home business, such as fair housing laws, local zoning regulations, state regulations, etc.

Here are a few tips for writing the market analysis section of your sober living home business plan:

 • Conduct market research, industry reports, and surveys to gather data.
 • Provide specific and detailed information whenever possible.
 • Illustrate your points with charts and graphs.
 • Write your business plan keeping your target audience in mind.

4. Products And Services

Mention the sober living home products & services you will offer. This list may include services like,

 • Residential accommodation
 • Furniture and amenities
 • Meal services

In short, this section of your sober living home plan must be informative, precise, and client-focused. By providing a clear and compelling description of your offerings, you can help potential investors and readers understand the value of your business.

5. Sales And Marketing Strategies

Writing the sales and marketing strategies section means a list of strategies you will use to attract and retain your clients. Here are some key elements to include in your sales & marketing plan:

Pricing Strategy

Describe your pricing strategy—how you plan to price your services and stay competitive in the local market. You can mention any discounts you plan to attract new customers to your sober living home business.

Marketing Strategies

Discuss your marketing strategies to market your services. You may include some of these marketing strategies in your business plan—social media marketing, brochures, content marketing, and print marketing.

Overall, this section of your sober living home business plan should focus on customer acquisition and retention.

Have a specific, realistic, and data-driven approach while planning sales and marketing strategies for your sober living home business, and be prepared to adapt or make strategic changes in your strategies based on feedback and results.

6. Operations Plan

The operations plan section of your business plan should outline the processes and procedures involved in your business operations, such as staffing requirements and operational processes. Here are a few components to add to your operations plan:

 • Industry study—market size, growth potential, market trends, etc.
 • Identifying target market—based on user behavior and demographics.
 • Analyzing direct and indirect competitors.
 • Calculating market share—understanding TAM, SAM, and SOM.
 • Knowing regulations and restrictions
 • Organizing data and writing the first draft.

Writing a marketing analysis section can be overwhelming, but using ChatGPT for market research can make things easier.

How detailed should the financial projections be in my sober living home business plan?

The level of detail of the financial projections of your sober living home business may vary, considering various business aspects like direct and indirect competition, pricing, and operational efficiency. However, your financial projections must be comprehensive enough to demonstrate a complete view of your financial performance.

Generally, the statements included in a business plan offer financial projections for at least the first three or five years of business operations.

A young woman talking about her progress during an anonymous meeting.

Recovery houses are more commonly referred to as halfway houses. Recovery houses help somebody recovering from addiction learn new skills and learn how to function again in society. Any addict who has undergone drug or alcohol addiction treatment in a hospital or clinic will attest to how difficult the transition from full-time treatment to independent living can be. The halfway house acts as the bridge between treatment and the real world. At a halfway house a recovering addict will receive, and give, peer support in an environment free of alcohol or drugs. Thus, the recovery house helps a former addict become a productive citizen again [source: Integrity Way ].

If you want to open a recovery house, the following information will be very helpful.

 • Education There are no specific educational requirements for starting a recovery house.
 • Location Decide where you want to open the halfway house. Get any necessary building permits and zoning variances. Have all the necessary fire and health inspections done.
 • Staffing You will have to hire the necessary staff to supervise your recover house's residents. The type of staff you will need depends on the type of recovery house you're running.
 • Certification The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) certifies recovery houses and provides some funding. In order to have a certified recovery house you must be sure you can comply with their regulations, in addition of course to any necessary zoning and safety requirements. Their standards refer not only to the building itself but also to how the occupants are treated. They also stipulate minimum involvement in substance abuse treatment for the managerial staff.
 • Funding You must calculate if the venture will be profitable. Decide how many residents you will have in each room, how much you will charge, and whether you will charge by the day, week or month. Be sure to take into account all your expenses, including mortgage or rental fees, food utilities, staffing, sundries and other incidentals. Don't forget to take into account all your start up costs [source: Spigel , NICD ]. //]]]]> ]]>

Key Concepts

Mission driven.

When someone says they want to open their first recovery home, industry veterans often reply with, “Are you sure?” or “Why?”. All business startups are challenging, but owning and operating a recovery home is very energy and financially intensive. Investors and administrators should be very clear around why they want to open a business, especially recovery housing: 1) You want to be financially sustainable or profitable; 2) You love the process; or 3) You want to make a difference. Some argue that a recovery home owner and operator should have all three motivations to be successful. In any case, a clear mission will guide strategic decisions and day-to-day activities.

Data Driven Business Plan

Too often, individuals start spending money, like buying or renting a house, before they adequately planned for success. Setting emotions and passion aside, recovery entrepreneurs should develop a realistic budget and financial projections. Ultimately, “the numbers” should drive the decision whether to move forward or go back to the drawing board.

Priority Population

Closely tied to the mission and business plan is the priority population you want to serve. The target population profile(s) or archetype(s) will help identify where they will come from (marketing plan), what types of support they will need (service and staffing plan), how much it will cost (operational budget) and how they will pay for it (revenue plan).

Right Location

Rent will be one of the largest line items in the budget, so balancing cost with bed capacity and access to infrastructure (e.g. jobs, transportation, support meetings, and groceries) is important. You will need enough bed capacity to at least break-even, knowing the average occupancy will be less than 100%. Yet, recovery housing is often scrutinized around overcrowding.

Universal health and safety codes and NARR standards require at least 50 sq ft per person per bedroom. For example, a 10 foot by 10 foot bedroom is 100 square feet, meaning a maximum of 2 beds (100 divided by 50) can be placed in the room; regardless whether it is one bunk bed or two twins.

Despite persons in recovery meeting the civil rights definition of “disabled”, a “protected class” under federal fair housing law, local government and/or home owner associations (HOAs) often discriminate against people’s access to recovery housing by regulating them above and beyond other residential households. Fair housing law is complex, and rulings are made on a case-by-case basis.

Providers should be aware of local Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) politics and have a plan in place, such as the phone number of a fair housing attorney, in case they get the dreaded “knock on the door” from local enforcement agents.

More Than a Bed and a Big Book

From the outside, many assume that recovery housing is about putting a bunch of people in one house and requiring them to go to 12 Step meetings or similar outside support groups. Reviewing NARR best practices standards, you can see that owning and operating a recovery home is much more than that.

Well operated recovery homes mindfully use various constructs to actively promote recovery, as outlined below.

Recovery Home Constructs

Social model recovery.

As mentioned before, all recovery residences are founded on social model recovery philosophy, which has been called the “secret sauce” of recovery housing. In contrast to clinical or medical model approaches, social model uses socio-cultural elements to provide ubiquitous support. It creates and maintains an infrastructure and within that container, a culture amongst the community of residents and staff that supports recovery. When assessing a recovery home’s use of social model recovery, one can ask the following questions:

 • Is a homelike environment created?
 • Are staff respected peers more than distant superiors?
 • Is authority based on lived experience?
 • Are peers given meaningful leadership and governance roles?
 • Is it recovery-oriented?
 • Is the community viewed as a resource?

Psychological Sense of Community

Within recovery homes, individuals once enmeshed in a culture of addiction transplant themselves into a culture of recovery, which helps change their self identify and embrace a life in recovery. To facilitate this, recovery homes cultivate a recovery-oriented psychological sense of community, which in short can be described as having a sense of belonging, mattering, fulfillment, and connection.

Recovery Definitions, Dimensions and Principles

Recovery housing promotes recovery by supporting recovery dimensions and principles.

For context, several definitions of recovery are offered below:

"Recovery is process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential." -- SAMHSA 2012

"Recovery from substance dependence is a voluntarily maintained lifestyle characterized by sobriety, personal health, and citizenship." -- The Betty Ford Institute (2007) 4

How to Start a Sober Living Home Business

By: Author Tony Martins Ajaero

Home » Business ideas » Non-Profit Industry » Sober Living Home

Do you want to start a sober living home? If YES, here is a complete guide to starting a sober living home business with NO money and no experience plus a sample sober living home business plan template.

If you live in the United States, Canada and in most developed countries of the world you would agree that it is indeed brisk business taking care of people that are recovering from drugs or alcoholic addictions. Usually, they look for a secured and conducive home to enroll in so that their recovery and perhaps cure from addiction will be smooth and fast, hence the need for a sober living home.

Sober living homes are group homes for people who are recovering from addiction issues. People who live in sober homes have to follow certain laid down rules and of course contribute to the home by doing their own allocated chores.

Many drug and alcohol addicts use sober housing to help them transit from rehab to living independently without using drugs or alcohol. If you think that you have the flair and you are trained to help drug and alcoholic addicts recover from their addictions, then you should consider starting a sober living home in your city.

If you have decided to start a sober living home in your city or county, then you should ensure that you carry out thorough feasibility studies and also market survey. This will enable you to properly identify locations with the right demographic composition (location with a good number of drug and alcohol addicts) and then hit the ground running.

Setting up a sober living home requires hard work and serious planning. You are expected to apply and obtain permit and license to run such facility from the government and your facility must meet the required health and safety standards before you can be allowed to operate a sober living home.

Aside from well – trained domestic employees that will be on your payroll, you will also need to hire nurses, care givers, psychologist et al. Starting a sober living home business is indeed capital intensive, but at the same time it is a lucrative business.

Running a sober living home facility can gulp quite a lot. This is because of the various things that are involved in it. They include renting a facility, paying the workers, furnishing the facility to suit the residents, medications, feeding, as well as some other very essential things that cannot be neglected.

It is for this reason that you may need to source for funds. If you have a great saving culture and have been able to save the amount involved, then that is fine. On the other hand, if not, there may be banks and microfinance banks to turn to for a loan. Also, there are angel investors that may be very interested in supporting your business.

Steps to Starting a Sober Living Home Business

1. understand the industry.

Operators in the sober living home industry largely provide residential and personal-care services related to diagnosing and treating alcohol, drug and other substance abuse. Demographic trends have supported a growing demand for sober living home franchises, and the industry has experienced strong growth over the last half a decade.

This growth is expected to improve, driven by an improving economic environment and the continued addictions to drugs, alcohol and other substances, which will expand the industry’s markets.

The law in the united states and in some countries states that before a sober living home facility can commence operation, there should be at least six residents and at least one trained caregiver there 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

So also, a standard sober living home facility is expected to have a house manager, night manager, weekend activity coordinator, and 2 or more caregivers depending on the size of the facility. The Sober Living Home Industry is indeed a very large industry and pretty much thriving in developed countries such as United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Italy et al.

Statistics has it that in the United States of America alone, there are about 5,623 licensed and registered outpatient and inpatient facilities handling drugs, alcohol and substance addicts scattered all across the United States responsible for employing about 126,263 employees and the industry rakes in a whooping sum of $10bn annually with an annual growth rate projected at 4.9 percent between 2011 and 2016.

No player in the industry can boast of having a lion share of the available market share in the industry. A recent report published by IBISWORLD shows that the distribution of substance abuse clinics in the United States largely reflects the distribution of the population throughout the various regions.

The report further states that other important factors include the extent of substance abuse, the age distribution of the population, state government policies and the level of urbanization in the region. The majority of industry clinics are located in the Southeast, the West and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

The Southeast accounts for 23.5 percent of substance abuse clinics, according to data sourced from the US Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. This is slightly below the region’s respective share of the population at 25.4 percent of the nation’s total. Within the Southeast, Florida has the greatest share of industry clinics, measured at 6.5 percent of the total.

It is important to state that the sober living home facility business is indeed a growing business. Even though the business is not considered a Green business in the United States of America, one can comfortably say that the business is booming and open to potential entrepreneurs who are interested in the business.

Over and above, the sober living home line of business in developed countries are still enjoying good patronage particularly if they are well positioned and if they know how to reach out to their target market; those addicted to drugs, alcohol and substance abuse.

2. Conduct Market Research and Feasibility Studies

 • Demographics and Psychographics

The demographic and psychographics composition of those who need the services of a sober living home facility business is restricted to those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol and other substances.

So, if you are looking towards defining the demographics of your sober living home facility business, then you should make it far reaching to everyone who is addicted to drugs, alcohol and other substances, including NGOs who work with people who are addicted to drugs, alcohol and substances in and around the location where your facility is located.

3. Decide Which Niche to Concentrate On

Most sober living home facility businesses tend to operate general services that a standard sober living home facility provider is expected to offer. That is why it seems that there are no niche areas in the industry. But on the other hand, some sober living home facilities may decide to major in some key areas such as;

 • Providing inpatient and outpatient services
 • Providing detoxification services
 • Providing intensive inpatient and outpatient services
 • Providing medication-assisted opioid therapy services

The Level of Competition in the Industry

The level of competition in the sober living home industry to some extent depends largely on the location of the business, your niche area of operation and of course the capacity of your sober living home facility. If you can successfully create a unique niche for your sober living home facility business, you are likely going to experience little or no competition.

For instance, if you are the only sober living home facility business in your location that is into detoxification services or providing intensive outpatient services or providing medication-assisted opioid therapy services, you can successfully monopolize the market for a long time before you start having competitions.

It is important to also state that the competition in the sober living home facility business is not restricted to that line of business but you will be competing against all players in the Home Care Providers industry.

4. Know Your Major Competitors in the Industry

It is important to point out the fact that in every industry, there are always brands who perform better or are better regarded by customers and the general public than others.

Some of these brands are those that have been in the industry for a long time, while others are best known for how they conduct their businesses and the results they have achieved over the years. These are some of the leading sober living home facilities in the United States of America and in the globe;

 • The Doorway to Recovery – Premier Michigan Sober Living‎
 • Sober Orange County
 • Men’s transitional housing in Los Angeles County
 • Women’s Sober Living Housing Network
 • Promises Treatment Center
 • Cirque Lodge
 • Caron Foundation
 • Sierra Tucson
 • Hazelden Treatment Centers
 • Betty Ford Center
 • Pasadena Recovery Center

 • Q Health Palm Beach

Economic Analysis

When starting a sober living home facility business, you just have to get your costing cum economic analysis right if your intention of building the business is to generate profit, grow the business and perhaps expand the business and start competing at national level.

When conducting costing and economic analysis for your sober living home facility business, you just have to critically examine these key factors; place, pricing and promotion. As a matter of fact, you would have to continue to review these key factors at regular interval while running your sober living home facility business.

As a sober living home facility business owner, you just have to have a proper grasp of your competitive landscape if indeed you want to

5. Decide Whether to Buy a Franchise or Start from Scratch

If you are looking towards starting a sober living home facility business, you would have to start from the very scratch because you can hardly get a franchise of a sober living home facility business to buy. Besides starting a sober living home facility business from the scratch is less stressful when compared to other similar businesses.

With a sober living home facility business, you should just try as much as possible to secure a good residential facility that is inside a residential estate and then leverage on every marketing tool within your disposal especially the internet to market your sober living home facility.

Please note that most of the big and successful sober living home facilities around started from the scratch and they were able to build a solid business brand.

6. Know the Possible Threats and Challenges You Will Face

If you decide to open your own sober living home facility today, one of the major challenges you are likely going to face is the presence of well – established sober living home facilities and of course other players in the Home Care Providers industry in your target market location.

The only way to avoid this challenge is to create your own market; concentrate on drug and alcohol addicts and those who are into substance abuse in your immediate community. Some other threats and challenges that you are likely going to face are mature markets, bad economy (economy downturn), stiff competition, volatile costs, and rising medical care prices.

So also, unfavorable government policies, seasonal fluctuations, demographic/social factors, downturn in the economy which is likely going to affect consumer spending and of course emergence of new competitors within the same location where yours is located.

There is hardly anything you can do as regards these threats and challenges other than to be optimistic that things will continue to work for your good.

7. Choose the Most Suitable Legal Entity (LLC, C Corp, S Corp)

You can either choose a general partnership, limited liability company which is commonly called an LLC, or a sole proprietorship for a business such as sober living home facility. Ordinarily, sole proprietorship should have been the ideal business structure for a small scale sober living home care facility business especially if you are just starting out with moderate startup capital.

But people prefer limited liability Company for obvious reasons. As a matter of fact, if your intention is to grow the business and operate all across the United States of America, then choosing sole proprietor is not an option for you. Limited Liability Company, LLC or even general partnership will cut it for you.

Setting up an LLC protects you from personal liability. If anything goes wrong in the business, it is only the money that you invested into the limited liability company that will be at risk. It is not so for sole proprietorships and general partnerships.

Limited liability companies are simpler and more flexible to operate and you don’t need a board of directors, shareholders meetings and other managerial formalities.

These are some of the factors you should consider before choosing a legal entity for your sober living home facility business; limitation of personal liability, ease of transferability, admission of new owners, investors’ expectation and of course taxes.

If you take your time to critically study the various legal entity to use for your sober living home facility business, you will agree that limited liability company; an LLC is most suitable. You can start this type of business as limited liability company (LLC) and in future convert it to a ‘C’ corporation or an ‘S’ corporation especially when you have the plans of going public.

8. Choose a Catchy Business Name

Normally, when it comes to choosing a name for your business, you should be creative because whatever name you choose for your business will go a long way to create a perception of what the business represents. Typically, it is the norm for people to follow the trend in the industry they intend operating from when naming their business.

If you are considering starting your own sober living home facility business, here are some catchy names that you can choose from;

 • Quick Recovery® Sober Living Home Facilities, LLC
 • Crest Haven™ Sober Living Home Facility, Inc.
 • Cross County Sober Living Home Facility, Inc
 • Caring Hands Drugs and Alcohol Rehab Center
 • Trans – World® Sober Living Home Center
 • Henry Docusate Sober Living Home Facility
 • Captee May® Sober Living Home Facility
 • Warm Embrace Sober Living Home Facility Services, Inc.
 • Bridget Brownstone Sober Living Home Facility Company
 • Sharon Holmes Sober Living Home Facility Services, Inc.

9. Discuss with an Agent to Know the Best Insurance Policies for You

In the United States and in most countries of the world, you can’t operate a business without having some of the basic insurance policy covers that are required by the industry you want to operate from. Thus, it is imperative to create a budget for insurance policy cover and perhaps consult an insurance broker to guide you in choosing the best and most appropriate insurance policies for your sober living home facility business.

Here is some of the basic insurance policy covers that you should consider purchasing if you want to start your own sober living home facility business in the United States of America;

 • General insurance
 • Health insurance
 • Liability insurance
 • Risk Insurance
 • Workers Compensation
 • Building/Property insurance
 • Overhead expense disability insurance
 • Business owner’s policy group insurance
 • Payment protection insurance

10. Protect your Intellectual Property With Trademark, Copyrights, Patents

If you are considering starting your own sober living home facility business, you may not have any need to file for intellectual property protection/trademark. This is so because the nature of the business makes it possible for you to successfully run it without having any cause to challenge anybody in court for illegally making use of your company’s intellectual properties.

On the other hand, if you just want to protect your company’s logo and other documents or software that are unique to you or even operation concepts, then you can go ahead to file for intellectual property protection. If you want to register your trademark, you are expected to begin the process by filing an application with the USPTO.

11. Get the Necessary Professional Certification

If you intend starting a sober living home facility in the United States of America, you are encouraged to pursue professional certifications; it will go a long way to show your commitment towards the business. Certification validates your competency and shows that you are highly skilled, committed to your career and up-to-date in this competitive market.

Besides it is almost impossible to run a sober living home facility business in the United States without the proper professional certification. In most countries of the world, practicing any medical related practice without a license is illegal.

In most jurisdictions, individuals found to be providing medical, nursing or other professional services without the appropriate certification or license may face sanctions including even criminal charges leading to prison. These are some of the certifications you can work towards achieving if you want to run your own sober living home facility company;

 • Registered nurse and Licensed practical nurse Certificate
 • AADNS Certification
 • Caregiver Certification
 • Director of Nursing Services–Certified (DNS-CT)
 • QAPI Certified Professional (QCP)

Please note that you cannot successfully run your sober living home facility company without any professional certification especially the basic certifications such as caregiver certification, private Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed practical nurse.

12. Get the Necessary Legal Documents You Need to Operate

These are some of the basic legal documents that you are expected to have in place if you want to legally run your own sober living home facility company in the United States of America;

 • Business and liability insurance
 • Federal Tax Payer’s ID
 • State Permit
 • Certificate of Incorporation
 • Business License
 • Business Plan
 • Health inspection Certificate
 • Copy of license for the service support facility and/or a recent inspection report
 • Non – disclosure Agreement
 • Employment Agreement (offer letters)
 • Employee’s Handbook
 • Operating Agreement for LLCs
 • Insurance Policy
 • Online Terms of Use (if you have a website)
 • Online Privacy Policy Document (basically for online payment portal)
 • Company Bylaws
 • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
 • Building License
 • Franchise or Trademark License (optional)

13. Raise the Needed Startup Capital

Starting a standard and well – equipped sober living home facility business is capital intensive especially if you choose to launch the business on a small scale and you only have a handful of full – time employees on your payroll. Leasing of a standard facility that can accommodate your residents and staff members and of course the purchase of medical equipment are part of what will consume a large chunk of your startup capital.

In essence, if you choose to start the business on a small scale, you will still have the need to go source for fund to finance the business. Here are some of the options you can explore when sourcing for startup capital for your sober living home facility business;

 • Raising money from personal savings and sale of personal stocks and properties
 • Raising money from investors and business partners
 • Sell of shares to interested investors
 • Applying for Loan from your Bank
 • Pitching your business idea and applying for business grants and seed funding from government, donor organizations and angel investors
 • Source for soft loans from your family members and your friends

14. Choose a Suitable Location for your Business

Starting a business such as sober living home facility business comes with its own challenges; it is a business that cannot be started in any location. As a matter of fact, you will need approval from your local council and other regulating authorities in the city you intend opening your sober living home facility business.

Generally, in business, it cannot be overemphasized that the location you chose to start your business is key to the success of the business, hence entrepreneurs are willing to rent or lease a facility in a visible location; a location where the demography consists of the people who are addicted to drugs and other substances, and of course people with the required purchasing power and lifestyle.

Most importantly, before choosing a location for your sober living home facility business , ensure that you first conduct a thorough feasibility studies and market survey. The possibility of you coming across similar business that just closed shop in the location you want to open yours can’t be ruled out.

This is why it is very important to gather as much facts and figures before choosing a location to set up your own sober living home facility business. These are some of the key factors that you should consider before choosing a location for your sober living home facility business;

 • The demography of the location
 • The demand for the services of sober living home facilities and other homecare related businesses in the location
 • The purchasing power of the residents of the location
 • Accessibility of the location
 • The number of sober living home facilities and homecare related services businesses that in the location
 • The local laws and regulations in the community
 • Traffic, parking and security

15. Hire Employees for your Technical and Manpower Needs

When it comes to starting a standard sober living home, you will need stethoscopes, Blood Pressure Cuffs, oxygen tanks, first aid kits and other related equipment that will aid you in carrying out your job. It is important to state that these equipment can be purchased as fairly used if you are operating on a low budget.

What is a Drug Rehabilitation Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your drug rehabilitation business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Drug Rehab Center

If you’re looking to start a drug rehabilitation business or grow your existing drug rehabilitation company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your drug rehabilitation business to improve your chances of success. Your drug rehabilitation business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Drug Rehabilitation Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a drug rehabilitation business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for drug rehabilitation companies.

How to write a business plan for a drug rehabilitation business.

If you want to start a drug rehabilitation business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The business plan outline below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your drug rehabilitation business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of drug rehabilitation business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a drug rehabilitation business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of drug rehabilitation businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

 • Give a brief overview of the drug rehabilitation industry.
 • Discuss the type of drug rehabilitation business you are operating.
 • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
 • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
 • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of drug rehabilitation business you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of drug rehabilitation businesses:

 • Medical detox/symptom management drug rehabilitation: this type of drug rehabilitation focuses on medical assistance while individuals are in withdrawal, along with the management of symptoms the individual may have during recovery.
 • Substance abuse treatment center: Commonly seen as highly-effective, substance abuse treatment centers focus on one or a combination of the following: counseling, group therapy, medically-assisted treatment therapy (MAT) and other forms of assistance that support holistic health and well-being.
 • Self-help drug rehabilitation: this type of therapy is designed for someone who prefers to work on an individual basis with one counselor, commonly a professional certified in alcohol and drug rehabilitation.

In addition to explaining the type of drug rehabilitation business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

 • When and why did you start the business?
 • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of patients served, the number of cases with positive outcomes, reaching X number of contracted medical providers who refer directly to your company, etc.
 • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the drug rehabilitation industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the drug rehabilitation industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your drug rehabilitation business plan:

 • How big is the drug rehabilitation industry (in dollars)?
 • Is the market declining or increasing?
 • Who are the key competitors in the market?
 • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
 • What trends are affecting the industry?
 • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
 • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your drug rehabilitation business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your drug rehabilitation business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: individuals, family members of addicts, physicians and licensed therapists.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of drug rehabilitation business you operate. Clearly, individuals would respond to different marketing promotions than medical personnel, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other drug rehabilitation businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes psychiatrists, other healthcare providers, or members of the clergy. You need to mention direct competition, as well.

For each direct competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

 • What types of customers do they serve; in-patient or out-patient?
 • What type of drug rehabilitation business are they?
 • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
 • What are they good at?
 • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

 • Will you provide options for the uninsured?
 • Will you offer 24/7 care services that your competition doesn’t?
 • Will you provide a one-to-one ratio of therapist- to-addict service?
 • Will you provide certified personnel in every department of your business?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a drug rehabilitation business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of drug rehabilitation company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide therapy that includes in-patient care coupled with therapy sessions for management of addiction?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the products and/or services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your drug rehabilitation company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your drug rehabilitation business located near a hospital, in a clinic in a pleasant neighborhood, or is it in a stand-alone building? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your drug rehabilitation marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

 • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
 • Reach out to websites
 • Distribute flyers to area medical and therapist personnel
 • Engage in email marketing
 • Advertise on social media platforms
 • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your drug rehabilitation business, including answering calls, overseeing clinic or substance abuse treatment center practices, providing daily care, billing insurance, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your Xth substance abuse treatment center patient, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your drug rehabilitation business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your drug rehabilitation business’ potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing drug rehabilitation businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a drug rehabilitation business or successfully running a therapist practice.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you admit 10 new patients per day, and/or offer group therapy sessions? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your drug rehabilitation business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a drug rehabilitation business:

 • Cost of equipment, furnishings, and housing
 • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
 • Business insurance
 • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office location mortgage or a list of contracted providers who refer individuals to your substance abuse treatment center.

Writing a business plan for your drug rehabilitation business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the drug rehabilitation industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful drug rehabilitation business.
