Certified FNPs provide a range of health care services to individuals and families in a variety of clinical settings. Such services include health maintenance, disease prevention, assessment, and healthcare management. The FNP program offers an excellent educational foundation in advanced practice nursing and substantial clinical and leadership experience. Graduates of the program are prepared to make independent and collaborative decisions, provide evidence-based sound clinical judgments, and advance their profession through implementation of research findings in practice aimed at improving patient outcomes.

The University of Miami is located at the crossroads of the Caribbean and the Americas in tropical Miami-Dade County, Florida. This location provides a unique multicultural environment in which to study and practice. The program benefits from its relationship with the University of Miami’s UHealth System and Jackson Health System, both recognized as major international academic health systems, and many other clinical partnerships across South Florida. Clinical instruction is taught by highly skilled faculty in a variety of settings.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take a national certification examination in the family nurse practitioner specialty area offered by either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

  • Students complete a total of 71 credits in either two years or four years of study. The tuition is listed on our “ Cost of Study ” site. Opportunities for financial assistance are available. Plans of study are “lock-step” and students begin and end their programs with a cohort of students.
  • Courses are taught by the University of Miami’s prestigious faculty who are unique because they are also engaged in clinical practice. Their level of clinical expertise translates into education that is scientific, evidence-based, and patient-centered.
  • FNP DNP students complete a minimum of 1,000 hours in clinical and practice immersion experiences during their education, with clinical rotations occurring at various clinical site from academic teaching centers to community practice sites that serve South Florida’s multicultural and diverse population.
  • Clinical rotations are completed in a number of general and specialized areas, allowing students to gain exposure and experience in numerous practice settings and with a wide variety of patients. FNP faculty assign different clinical practice sites and preceptors for each clinical course, so that students are exposed to different population-focused competencies over the course of their FNP education.
  • Both the full-time and part-time options start each Fall. However, new graduate students participate in an online Advanced Practice Preparation (APP) prior to starting classes to prepare them for graduate-level studies.

The goals of the program are to prepare nursing leaders able to:

  • Integrate knowledge, theories, and concepts from the biophysical, psychosocial, analytical, and organization sciences to develop ethical health care systems and new frontiers for nursing practice which assist with the resolution of health care disparities.
  • Evaluate research methods and findings to create an evidence base for nursing practice and health care delivery systems that are best practices and alleviate health care disparities.
  • Synthesize knowledge gained from traditional and innovative learning methods to lead quality, cost effective health care collaborations addressing health care disparities.
  • Demonstrate expert clinical judgement and knowledge of health care systems to design, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based care interventions to reduce health care disparities.
  • Model expert nursing practice and serve as a leader and mentor in assisting other nursing colleagues to achieve expert nursing practice.
  • Employ knowledge of health care policy and economics to develop and evaluate programs to address health care disparities.

College of Business and Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management team up to add a concentration to the doctoral program

By Cynthia Corzo

August 28, 2024 at 4:06pm

Florida International University’s College of Business (FIU Business) and the university’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management are launching a hospitality concentration in the FIU Business Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) program.

The program, which will enroll its first cohort in Spring of 2025, aims to develop executives who can conduct both academic and industry research.

“Hospitality relies heavily on business analytics,” said George Marakas, associate dean of research and doctoral studies at FIU Business. “Being able to do proper research and make the results reliable, certainly will benefit any organization our graduates help lead.”

The hospitality DBA concentration is designed for senior-level professionals who have established themselves in the industry and are looking for advancement or to pursue the next chapter in their career.

“We are very excited to offer this new, hospitality-focused doctorate degree which will give experienced industry professionals research skills and pedagogy to prepare them to lead and teach the future leaders of the hospitality industry,” said Michael Cheng, dean of the FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Under the guidance and mentorship of our expert faculty, doctoral degree seeking students will be able to leverage these new skills and tools, together with their executive experience, to advance in their current career, become an independent consultant, or join the ranks of hospitality professors.

“Hospitality is a multi-billion-dollar industry and a key economic driver for South Florida, the U.S. and around the world. Our first cohort will be guided by hospitality educators with years of both award-winning research and industry expertise,” said Andrew Moreo, FIU Chaplin School associate professor and director of research.

The three-year FIU Business DBA program will meet online weekly and in person in downtown Miami once a month. For more information please visit the program’s website .

USF receives $3 million for interdisciplinary NSF research traineeship award to advance semiconductor research and education

  • August 26, 2024

The NSF Research Traineeship Program (NRT) awarded a five-year, $3 million funding grant to the University of South Florida (USF) for the development and implementation of a comprehensive and experiential learning-based education, research, training and skills development program in semiconductor design, manufacturing and packaging for graduate students. The NRT is a prestigious, national program that supports annual cohorts of trainees in developing the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. The program is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high- priority interdisciplinary or convergent research areas through comprehensive traineeship models that are innovative, evidence-based and aligned with changing workforce and research needs.

Principal Investigator, Professor Ashok Kumar (Mechanical Engineering), along with Co-Principal Investigators, Professor Srinivas Katkoori (Computer Science & Engineering), Associate Professor Albert Kim (Medical Engineering), Associate Professor Yasin Yilmaz (Electrical Engineering), and Professor Norma Alcantar (Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering) were awarded the grant for a project entitled “NRT: Science, Technology, Engineering, Program for Upward Partnership (STEP-UP) for Advancing Microelectronics Education and Training.” This grant will provide approximately 23 graduate (15 doctoral and 8 master) student fellowships to advance research in the much-needed field of semiconductor technologies.

“Much-publicized semiconductor chips shortage has impacted several critical industries. A skilled and diverse pipeline of workers is critical to building a sustainable domestic semiconductor industry and to achieving the CHIPS Act economic and national security goals. This NRT grant will provide to better prepare master’s and doctoral students for the interdisciplinary talents required in semiconductor chip development,” said Ashok Kumar, the principal investigator of the NSF NRT project.

“USF’s STEP-UP NRT program is a unique cutting-edge training program that not only trains a graduate student in interdisciplinary technical skills and novel convergent approaches but also emphasizes on all-round trainee development in terms of communication, teamwork, project management, ethics and leadership to create tomorrow’s world leaders in the semiconductor field.” said Srinivas Katkoori, Co-investigator of the NRT project.

“Semiconductor industries are very reluctant to hire students without having any hands-on experience in semiconductor standard clean room facilities,” said Senior Personnel Robert Tufts and Rich Everly from the Nanotechnology Research and Education Center (NREC). They will be involved in providing the basic semiconductor fundamentals, processing, and design concept in fabrication of functional semiconductor devices in class 1000 clean room facilities at NREC.

Senior personnel Steve Kozlowski (Psychology Department), Grandon Gill (Muma College of Business), Sudeep Sarkar (Computer Science & Engineering Department) and Joanna Burchfield (College of Engineering) will be involved in comprehensive education and training activities for NRT Fellows in leadership, communication, teamwork, ethics, entrepreneurship skills, etc.

“This NSF-funded NRT program will be a model for a future interdisciplinary graduate program at USF and it brings significant benefit to our institution. It forges a convergent and innovative program to train graduates in Semiconductor Technology,” said Ruth Bahr, Dean of Graduate Studies, USF (Tampa Campus).

“USF’s ability to provide advanced semiconductor training to graduate students in a teaching clean room will strengthen the U.S. technical workforce. USF will increase capacity-building of skilled graduate scholars through strategic public-private collaborations and partnerships with government agencies, national laboratories, and academia.” said Sylvia Thomas, USF Vice President of Research and Innovation.

“The NSF Research Traineeship Award will significantly impact the quality of graduate education at USF and will bring a wide range of benefits to the research scholars we serve,” said Prasant Mohapatra, Provost and Executive Vice President. “At USF, we believe highly integrative graduate research training equips students with the skills and knowledge to tackle complex, real-world challenges. These programs foster critical thinking, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, which are vital for addressing the pressing issues of our time
