Part time PhD Degrees in Malaysia

If you need the best study environment in Asia, enroll to the tertiary education in Malaysia. This is a country with rich culture and vast activities to leave you entertained and relaxed as you study in the country

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

Part time learning allows one to obtain part-time degrees even if one cannot attend school on a full-time basis. One can learn at his or own pace, gradually accumulating credits which count towards final qualification.

MALAYSIAN & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

Institute of malaysian & international studies.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The postgraduate program at IKMAS emphasizes research within the social sciences with focus on various disciplines especially economics, sociology, political science, law and culture. The program is research-driven within the framework of inter-regionalism, connectivity and inclusive development.

Doctoral candidates at IKMAS embark on a rigorous journey, one that is multidisciplinary in nature and leading them to a deep understanding of historical and contemporary transformations, bearing in mind the interests of Malaysian society. The various dimensions of globalisation and occidentalism are essential to the multiple processes of social inequalities, for example economic differentiation and competition, as well as processes that impact class, ethic, gender, politics and identity.

The mandatory courses – Research Methodology and two courses on Globalisation and Occidentalism – equip our doctoral candidates with fundamental theories, conceptual frameworks, and research skills relevant to their chosen disciplines.

IKMAS is located at the heart of the university’s main campus about 35 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. A wide range of facilities are available on the campus grounds for both academic and extracurricular activities. IKMAS graduates also benefit from the institute’s active networking with international and local bodies that leads to the organization of multiple events and programs every year. The graduates’ involvement in the four levels of IKMAS Postgraduate Seminar during the duration of their study provides them the platform to present their research work, engage with peers and research fellows for intellectual interactions and discourse. Academic counsel from the esteemed members of institute’s International Advisory Board, Adjunct Professors and Distinguished International Professors is an added bonus.

Malaysia policymakers push for improved post-study work rights

Malaysia is learning from top student destinations like australia and canada when it comes to creating balanced immigration rules for foreign students.

Malaysian raise the Jalur Gemilang Malaysia flag during celebrate Merdeka.

Malaysia is continuing to review its immigration policies with a view to opening up further opportunities for international students to stay and work, according to the head of the country’s internationalisation body.

Novie Bin Tajuddin, chief executive of Education Malaysia Global Services, told  Times Higher Education  that Malaysia was trying to “strike the balance” between being “very strict” and “very lenient” when it comes to immigration rules for international students.

In 2015, the country set a target of recruiting 250,000 international students to Malaysia’s universities by 2025. However, due to the impact of the pandemic, this target was expected to be pushed back to 2030. Currently, there are an estimated 115,000 international students enrolled at the higher education level in Malaysia.

While policymakers plan to continue  prioritising international student recruitment , there are  concerns that growth is being hampered by strict immigration rules : in particular, the lack of opportunities for students to stay and work in the country once they graduate.

“Under the Ministry of Higher Education, we are saying that we want to retain the talent, but then the rules are not supporting this statement, which to me is stupid,” said Mr Tajuddin.

At the end of 2023, the government introduced a new visa that allows foreign graduates from 23 countries who studied in Malaysia to stay for a year in order to further their studies, travel and work part-time in certain job sectors. Eligible countries include Singapore, South Korea, Japan, the UK and the US.

“I want to tweak it further,” said Mr Tajuddin, adding that the Higher Education Ministry, which Education Malaysia falls under, is working with the Ministry of Home Affairs to “iron out” issues faced by international students.

He said they had learnt from countries like Australia and Canada, which have both recently made  significant changes  to their international student immigration rules.

“When we strike the balance, I think it is going to be a better environment…because we also want quality students to come and study in Malaysia,” he said, adding that the standard of education on offer in the country has improved in recent years.

“International people are looking at Malaysia as the country that is affordable and also with a good quality of education,” he said.

This has been supported by the establishment of 10 branch campuses over the past 30 years, including the University of Nottingham Malaysia, the University of Southampton Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia and Swinburne University of Technology Malaysia.

But, Mr Tajuddin said, British campuses in Malaysia have not reached their full potential because student enrolment figures “are not so good”.

“I would like to invite more [branch campuses], but at the same time, we have to ensure that we maximise the capacity that we have created,” he said.

“If we were to have many universities, but then the capacity is not utilised fully, I think it's such a waste.”
