Description

Are We Living in a Brave New World? This engaging Brave New World PowerPoint presentation poses the question and prompts your high school ELA students' curiosity, enticing them to explore this iconic dystopian novel. Compare Huxley's Brave New World dystopian society to our own. This compelling presentation features articles, text excerpts, interesting and informative graphics, and much more! No-Prep lesson.

Often, the phrase, “It’s a brave new world” is pronounced or whispered in discussions about science , technology , and ethics . True, Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel, Brave New World , addresses the advancements in these fields, but the author also stabs at society’s approaches to education , employment , and consumerism . Human concerns, religion, family, and sex , are also subject to satirical speculation. When teaching Brave New World , or any dystopian novel, it’s important to compel students to draw comparisons between the novel’s society and our own so they recognize the author’s important message and warning.

Created in 2018

In this presentation, I’ve addressed the main practices of the Brave New World and focused on our society’s parallels.

An Introduction Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World Original Cover Art to Brave New World

Outline • Science Fiction • Dystopian Literature • Approaches to Reading Science Fiction • Approaches to Reading Dystopian Literature • Brave New World – Areas of Focus

Science Fiction Science Fiction (also Scifi, SF) Agenre of literature in which works are set in the future, or in a present time setting disrupted by a plot device (a new invention, an alien being). Science Fiction is also called speculative fiction, because it supposes what life might be like in the future or in an alternate past. In general, Science Fiction has the following characteristics: • Respects the limits of scientific or pseudoscientific possibility • Has a moral or ethical message • Tries to discern humanity’s role in the universe The value of Science Fiction lies in its ability to foresee tomorrow’s crises, to dramatize human implications and consequences, and to act out alternatives.

Types of Science Fiction Common topics: • Utopia/Dystopia • Apocalyptic/Post-Apocalyptic • Time Travel • Extraterrestrial Invasion/Contact • Humanity versus Technology • Other Creatures/Other Worlds Subgenres of Science Fiction include: • Hard Science Fiction • Cyberpunk • Dystopian • Alternate Universe • Space Opera

Science Fiction – History prior to Brave New World Scholars consider Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) the first work of science fiction Late 19th Century: • Jules Verne (1828-1905) – Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), From the Earth to the Moon (1865), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869) • H.G. Wells (1866-1946) – The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The War of the Worlds (1898) 1900-1936: • The first magazines to feature science fiction - Amazing Stories (1926)and Weird Tales • First use of the word “robot”: Karl Čapek’sRUR (1921) • First film set in the future: Metropolis(1926) • 1930s comic strips: Superman, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers helped spread science fiction to a wider audience. • 1936: Aldous Huxley publishes Brave New World Front-page illustration to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein by Theodore Von Holst < http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/exhibitions/gothicnightmares/rooms/room2_works.htm>

Dystopian Literature Dystopian (sometimes “anti-utopian”) fiction is a sub-genre of science fiction. The word dystopia derives from combining the prefix dys- ; Latin for “bad” with the Greek topos “place”

Dystopia - Derivation The word “dystopia” developed as a contrast to Utopia - a word coined by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 work of the same name. Greek ou- “no/not” Greek eu- “good” In modern English, utopia came to mean “a perfect place.” Illustration from Sir Thomas More’sUtopia <http://www.hughpearman.com/illustrations3/utopiaold.jpg>

Dystopian Literature In dystopian fiction, the futuristic society featured is incredibly imperfect. The purpose of dystopian works is didactic. • Often written in reaction against movements • Propaganda that “points fearfully” at the future “for a change of attitude in the present” (The Science Fiction Encyclopedia) Dystopias often feature: • A totalitarian regime oppressing members of the society • Societal rejection of the past • Strict conformity • A character or group of characters hoping to reform the society • Radically different technology

Dystopian Novels The Time Machine by H.G. Wells (1898) We by YevgenyZamiatin (1920) Anthem by Ayn Rand 1984 by George Orwell (1948) Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut (1952) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (1953) A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess (1962) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Approaches to Reading Science Fiction Strategies to keep in mind. Be Patient: You may have to read several pages before you start “getting it.” Suspend Your Disbelief: Accept the universe the author presents. Reread: If you’re confused, acknowledge it and reread the challenging sections of text. Build your Vocabulary Skills: Rely on contextual clues for unfamiliar terminology. Synthesize: You have to remember content across numerous passages in order to make meaning out of the entire work.

Approaches to Reading Dystopian Novels In addition to applying the strategies for reading SF, the following ideas should help: • Author’s Purpose – What lesson is being taught? • Conventions – How does the work fit or differ from the conventions of the subgenre? • Prepare to Be Offended – The ideas presented in dystopian literature are not pleasant

Brave New World: Tips for Reading • Keep in mind that Huxley’s objective is to make the reader think about his own world. • There will be many words you don’t recognize, and you won’t find them in a dictionary. • The Complete Works of Shakespeare influences much of what John Savage says, does and thinks. Keep in mind that he is parroting words that he doesn’t necessarily fully understand and he’s taking those words out of context. Aldous Huxley, reading despite his near-blindness. The London Times http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/film/article3602725.ece

Brave New World: Areas of Focus • Structure of the Society: Keep track of the caste system • Figuring out not just Who’s Who, but Who’s Important… • Word Games: Look out for allusions, mottoes, cliches, and neologisms adapted from familiar English words and phrases

On William Carey (Missions Talk, Ep. 37)

new world presentation

Pastor: Office or Gift?

Evangelism tool review: new world gospel presentation.

InterVarsity’s “New World Gospel Presentation” is an evangelism outline “designed to lead others to make a decision for Jesus Christ and join his mission to heal the world.”[1] As of today there are training materials on their website, Vimeo and YouTube. Additionally, they have developed a free app (iOS and Android) to help illustrate the main points of the presentation during a gospel conversation.

ENGAGING THE “FOUR WORLDS”

The presentation is built on the premise that most people ache for a better world. The outline works through the paradigm of a world, using four worlds to communicate the biblical story.  These four worlds are the four points for the conversation. Like many other presentations, they aim to frame redemptive history in their main points:

World 1:  The world and all that’s in it was designed for good.

World 2:  We—and the world—were damaged by evil.

World 3:  Jesus came to restore the world and everything in it to what God intended.

World 4:  Jesus invites us to join him and his community to heal the world.

InterVarsity ambitiously attempts to pull off the evangelistic version of a hat-trick with this presentation. They aim to listen to people’s stories (especially their scars and wounds), frame them within the context of the Bible’s story, and clearly communicate how Jesus answers their aches and pains. All of this they do while aiming to be faithful, winsome, compelling, clear, and understandable. Do they pull it off?

In communicating the first two worlds they do a fairly good job showing the divine design for creation and the problem we brought through human rebellion. “This better world really did exist,” they say, “and was designed for flourishing and intimacy with God. However, we rejected God, put ourselves in the place of God and as a result damaged the world.”

Yet here we see the good and the bad of contextualization. The good is seen in how they unpack words like idolatry with the helpful phrase “putting ourselves in the place of God.” The bad is in what they do not say. After all, why is it a problem that we put ourselves in God’s place? Is it bad simply because it wrecks our world or because it breaks his law, lies about his glory, and earns his just wrath? In an attempt to simplify the presentation many crucial questions go unanswered.

In world three we learn, that

Instead of leaving us in our brokenness God sends Jesus to be like us, to die on the cross and to rise from the dead. In this Jesus identifies with us, owns our judgment we deserve for damaging the world, and releases his power to restore the world for better.

Again, all of these statements are true but they are dangerously reductionistic. How does Jesus become like us? After all, we are the ones who messed everything up (see world 2). Did he contribute to this? Why did he have to die on the cross? How does this intersect with how I have “damaged” the world?

The fourth world is the invitation to join Jesus and his community in healing the world. In order to do this we must do three things:

(1)  Identify with Jesus ; believe that his death and resurrection broke the corruption in the world and in our hearts.

(2)  Own our responsibility  for the damage and the scarring in this world.

(3)  Overcome by choosing to follow Jesus . Jesus does not leave us alone; he gives us himself, the Holy Spirit, and his people to go together and follow people.

These things are not untrue but they are, in my view, unclear. Following Jesus is reduced to becoming a conduit of healing. If we have not explained who God is, what sin is, and how the reconciliation is exclusively achieved through the cross of Christ, then we are not being totally forthright. At some point Christians have to agree that the gospel has irreducible components. These categories need to be developed and explained; they cannot be glossed over and certainly cannot be replaced with vague phrases like becoming “a conduit of healing.”

Another point that I found troubling in reviewing the material was the sheer lack of Bible. The videos I reviewed were curiously devoid of any mention of Scripture, even in passing. Yet the Bible should feature prominently in our evangelism. After all, it is the word of Christ that brings faith (Rom. 10:17).

BOTTOM LINE

What’s my bottom line?

I appreciate and even applaud the four worlds, the drawings, and the goal of listening to people’s stories in order to show how they fit within the big picture of God’s story. However, in setting out to do this, we must exercise great care about what we say, not just how we say it.

While it’s set in the Bible’s storyline, the New World Gospel Presentation is so user-friendly that it is simply not Christian enough. I would imagine that Roman Catholics and even Mormons could use this material within their doctrinal framework without violating their convictions. While helpful in some points, the New World Gospel Presentation simply lacks the main ingredients of the gospel. I would not recommend this program for use in your church.

New World Aeternum Brings Amazon's MMO To Xbox And PlayStation In October

The next New World expansion will also expand where players can experience it.

By Jason Fanelli on June 7, 2024 at 3:26PM PDT

New World, the first game published by Amazon's gaming label, has built a strong and consistent player base on PC since its debut in 2021. Today, during Summer Game Fest Live with Geoff Keighley, Amazon Games announced that the action-RPG will journey to a new world of its own, as New World Aeternum will launch on PlayStation and Xbox on October 15.

New World Aeternum will bring the full New World experience--which includes the Rise Of The Angry Earth expansion that launched last year--to consoles, along with new Aeternum content.

No Caption Provided

This updated version of New World will include its first-ever "large scale player-versus-player zone," a new 10-player raid, solo trials added to endgame content, and more. Multiple core systems will also be revamped in Aeternum, including upgraded leveling, an improved dialogue system, and more.

All current PC players who have purchased both New World and the Rise Of The Angry Earth expansion will receive the Aeternum updates for free on launch. Additionally, all players who preorder Aeternum on the console of their choice, or those who log in on PC between now and October 14, will receive a Azoth Stalker mount as well.

New World follows a crew of survivors who appear on a mysterious and supernatural island after being stranded by a shipwreck. It was released in 2021 for PC via Steam, where it reached over 900,000 concurrent players within one week of launch.

New World Aeternum is scheduled to release October 15 for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and PC.

F1 News: FIA Reveals All-New 2026 Regulations - Less Drag and Reduced Ground Effect

Alex harrington | jun 6, 2024.

new world presentation

Today, the FIA unveiled a bold new set of technical regulations for the 2026 Formula One World Championship during a presentation in Montréal, just ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. These innovations aim to transform the sport, focusing on sustainability, safety, and enhancing the competitive racing experience.

Mohamed Ben Sulayem, the FIA President, encapsulated the enthusiasm surrounding the announcement.

“Today, the FIA is defining a hugely exciting future for the pinnacle of motorsport with the launch of a comprehensive new set of regulations for the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship and beyond."

Central to these revolutionary changes is the introduction of cars that are lighter, faster, and more agile, with noteworthy adjustments in dimensions and power units. The new regulations dictate that the cars will weigh 30kg less than current models, with a trimmed wheelbase and a narrower body, enhancing raceability and promoting closer contests on the track. Additionally, the power unit will undergo significant modifications, featuring an equal split of 400kw from internal combustion and 350kw from electric power, augmented by almost 300% more battery power.

The FIA also plans to implement stronger structures and rigorous new testing standards, along with advancements such as highly visible rear wing endplate lights and lateral safety lights that indicate the ERS (Energy Recovery System) status, markedly improving both the structural integrity and visibility of the cars.

The redefined aerodynamics feature active components like movable front and rear wings, which adjust according to racing conditions. This innovation is complemented by a Manual Override Mode, enabling drivers to temporarily boost their car’s electrical power for strategic overtaking, adding an exciting tactical layer to races.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali elaborated on the broader impacts of these regulations, emphasizing their significance for the global automotive landscape:

“The new sustainably fuelled hybrid power unit presents a huge opportunity for the global automotive industry, the drop in fuel has the potential to be used by cars around the joke of the world and dramatically cut emissions. Its potential is one of the key reasons why we will have a record number of engine suppliers in Formula 1 in 2026."

These sweeping changes are the fruit of extensive collaboration among the FIA, Formula 1, ten leading teams, OEMs, and power unit manufacturers, including such giants as Ferrari, Mercedes, Alpine, and new entrants like Audi and Red Bull Ford Powertrains. The regulations are scheduled for official ratification by the World Motor Sport Council on June 28, with a view to being implemented in the 2026 season.

From the FIA website, these are the outlines of the 2026 F1 regulations :

Power Unit

  • First published in August 2022, the power unit regulations provide for a major leap forward. Building on the foundations of the world’s most efficient hybrid engine currently used in Formula 1, the 2026 power unit delivers even more power than the current PUs. While the power derived from the ICE element drops from 550-560kw to 400kw, the battery element increases massively, from 120kw to 350kw – an almost 300% increase in electric power. Performance is therefore maintained, while sustainability is increased even further.
  • By simplifying the power unit through the removal of the MGU-H and the expansion of electrical power, the 2026 power is the most road relevant yet seen in Formula 1, and in tandem with 100% sustainable fuel provides a forward-thinking platform for transferrable future innovation.
  • Additionally, the amount of energy that can be recuperated during braking is doubled, resulting in a total recuperable energy of 8.5 MJ per lap.
  • A Manual Override mode has been included to create improved overtaking opportunities. While the deployment of a leading car will taper off after 290kph, reaching zero at 355kph, the following car will benefit from MGUK Override providing 350kW up to 337kph and +0.5MJ of extra energy.
  • Designed to attract new manufacturers to the sport, the regulations have led to commitments from existing suppliers such as Ferrari, Mercedes and Alpine, the return of Honda as a manufacturer and the arrival of Audi and Red Bull Ford Powertrains.
  • Designed to be smaller and lighter than the current generation of cars, the dimensions of the car have been altered to adhere to the ‘nimble car’ concept at the heart of the new rules. The wheelbase drops from a maximum of 3600mm to 3400mm, while the width has been reduced from 2000mm to 1900mm. The maximum floor width will be reduced by 150mm.
  • Weight reduction has been a key goal and 2026 cars will have a minimum weight of 768kg – down 30kg on their counterparts from 2022. This is made up of 722kg Car and Driver + 46kg estimated tyres mass.
  • Downforce has been reduced by 30% and drag by 55%.
  • The 18-inch wheel size introduced in 2022 is being retained, though the width of the front tyres has been reduced by 25mm and the rears by 30mm but with minimal loss in grip.

Aerodynamics

  • The 2026 cars will also benefit from all-new Active Aerodynamics systems. The system, involving movable front and rear wings, will result in greater cornering speeds with standard Z-Mode deployed. On straights drivers will be able to switch to X-Mode a low-drag configuration designed to maximise straight-line speed.
  • A three-element active rear wing will be adopted, while the lower beam wing has been removed and end plates have been simplified.
  • The front wing will be 100mm narrower than currently and will feature a two-element active flap.
  • In contrast to the current cars, front wheel arches will be removed, and part of the wheel bodywork will be mandated, to help achieve optimal wake performance.
  • In-washing wheel wake control boards will sit on the front of the side pods to assist with the control of the wheel wake.
  • The cars will feature a partially flat floor and a lower-powered diffuser, which will reduce the ground effect and the reliance of the cars on ultra-stiff and low set-ups.
  • The FIA’s rigorous pursuit of safety is upheld in the 2026 Formula 1 regulations.
  • Revised front impact regulations introduce a two-stage structure to avoid incidents in recent years where the front impact structure (FIS) has broken-off close to the survival cell after an initial impact, leaving the car unprotected for a subsequent impact.
  • Side intrusion protection has been increased. The new specification gives improved intrusion protection around the cockpit and more than doubles the protection given by the side of the fuel cell. Additionally, the improved intrusion protection will be achieved without adding weight.
  • Roll hoop loads have been increased from 16G to 20G in line with other single seater formulas and test loads increased from 141kN to 167kN.
  • Rear wing endplate lights will be homologated and significantly more visible/bright than current ones. Lateral safety lights will be introduced to identify the ERS status of a car stopped across the track.
  • The GPS antenna is being repositioned to improve sensitivity and to allow for future developments in active safety.

Sustainability

  • From 2026 Formula 1 power units will run on fully sustainable fuel, underscoring the commitment to environmentally responsible racing and setting a new standard for motorsport.
  • This fuel will be ‘drop-in’, meaning it can be used in almost any ICE-powered vehicle, offering a potentially game-changing solution to greenhouse gasses in the transportation sector. By 2030 there will be 1.2bn ICE cars on the road worldwide and the fuel developed for Formula 1 could be used to reduce emissions on an industrial scale.
  • Sustainability will be enhanced through greater use of electric power in the 2026 power units and a shift to towards a 50% electrical and 50% thermal power distribution.
  • The 2026 regulations are in line with the FIA objective of reaching Net Zero carbon by 2030.

Note: The 2026 regulations are now set to be officially ratified by the World Motor Sport Council on June 28

Claudia Sheinbaum projected to be Mexico's first woman president

By Kathleen Magramo, Maureen Chowdhury, Matt Meyer, Antoinette Radford and Melissa Macaya, CNN

The count: Mexico Elections 2024

Mexico's outgoing president says he will not try to influence sheinbaum in naming future officials.

From CNN's Abel Alvarado in Atlanta

Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador attends a press conference after the general election in Mexico City, on June 3.

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he will not influence newly elected president Claudia Sheinbaum in naming future officials for the country after Sunday’s landslide victory.

“She (Sheinbaum) is the one empowered to make all the decisions. I am not going to influence anything,” López Obrador said during his morning presser on Monday.

“She is going to choose her team,” he added.

However, he suggested that changes would come with the new president because it was part of the “transformation” he started for the country when he took office nearly six years ago.

López Obrador also said he may discuss constitutional reforms with Sheinbaum during the transition period but made it clear that he didn’t “want to impose anything.”

Sheinbaum will take office on October 1. Her term will last six years.

López Obrador, who is Sheinbaum’s political mentor, congratulated her on the win.

“We already spoke yesterday (Sunday); I congratulated her. I am very happy because imagine what it means to hand over the presidency to a woman after 200 years of only men ruling Mexico,” the president said.

The president said that once he hands over the presidential band, he plans to retire from political life entirely and will do so with “a lot of satisfaction.”

“Let it be heard loud and clear: after I finish my term in office, I will retire, and I will never again participate in any public or political act,” he said.

Biden congratulates Sheinbaum for her historic win

US President Joe Biden speaks at the White House in Washington on May 31.

US President Joe Biden congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic presidential win as Mexico's first woman to lead the country's government.

"I look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries," he said in a statement Monday. "I expressed our commitment to advancing the values and interests of both our nations to the benefit of our peoples."

Read Biden's full statement:

"I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first woman President of Mexico. I look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries. I expressed our commitment to advancing the values and interests of both our nations to the benefit of our peoples. I also congratulate the Mexican people for conducting a nationwide successful democratic electoral process involving races for more than 20,000 positions at the local, state, and federal levels."

Mexican peso falls against the US dollar

From CNN's Krystal Hur

A woman walks past a board showing currency exchange rates of the Mexican peso against the US dollar in Mexico City, on May 28.

The Mexican peso slipped roughly 3% against the US dollar Monday morning.

It comes after Claudia Sheinbaum's projected landslide victory, which has raised concerns that the ruling Morena party will be able to pass more ambitious constitutional reforms, many of which had been sought by outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"Sheinbaum is perceived as more of a technocrat than AMLO, and she also has a background in climate science. Both offer potential shifts in Mexican policy," wrote Bespoke Investment Group researchers in a Monday note.

Latin American leaders celebrate Claudia Sheinbaum's projected win

From CNN's Abel Alvarado

Claudia Sheinbaum waves to supporters in Mexico City on June 3.

Latin American leaders are celebrating Claudia Sheinbaum's projected win as Mexico's president with leaders referencing a common theme — that her appointment would hopefully see strengthened relationships between countries on the continent.

Sheinbaum will face several challenges, including security, organized crime, energy and immigration, and would also set the tone for  the pivotal US-Mexico bilateral relationship .

  • Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel  said in a post on X: "We wish her success in her management, the first for a woman in that position."
  • Honduran President Xiomara Castro extended her "sincere congratulations" to Sheinbaum, "as the first female president of Honduras" on X . Castro said she spoke to Sheinbaum following her victory and agreed "to work together for the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean."
  • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called her win a "great victory for the Great Homeland. I hug you! Long live Mexico!"
  • Bolivian President Luis Arce congratulated her on X and added that they "salute salute all the Mexican people for their democratic vocation and broad participation in the electoral process."
  • Colombian President Gustavo Petro described Sheinbaum's appointment as "a triumph for the Mexican people and for their democracy."
  • Costa Rica 's presidency referred to the two countries as "brother countries" and congratulated Sheinbaum on her appointment.

Millions turn out for largest election in Mexico's history

From CNN's Tara John and CNN en Español

People queue to vote at a polling station in Colonia Libertad, near the US-Mexico border in Tijuana, Mexico, on June 2.

Sunday’s poll was the largest election in the country’s history. More than 98 million voters were registered to cast a ballot, and 1.4 million Mexicans were eligible to vote abroad.

In addition to the presidency, more than 20,000 positions were being contested by an estimated 70,000 candidates vying to become senators, mayors and governors.

But the elections were plagued by  immense violence . There have been more than 20 political killings since September, according to the Mexican government. By some estimates though, that number is even higher. According to Mexican consultancy firm Integralia, at least 34 candidates were murdered in the run-up to the vote.

Voting was suspended for several hours on Sunday in the southeastern Mexican town of Coyomeapan due to violence at the polling centers, according to state electoral authorities.

And while the murder rate fell in Mexico  between 2019 and 2022 , in absolute numbers the country is still reeling from historically high levels of around 30,000 homicides each year. The true number is likely higher, experts say.

The violence appeared to have been a top concern for voters as cartels extend their grip through Mexico.

Claudia Sheinbaum has been coy about her security proposals but has pointed to her record as Mexico City mayor, when, according to her team, she improved the police force’s working conditions and intelligence-gathering abilities.

Outgoing Mexican president congratulates Sheinbaum

From CNN's Mia Alberti

A video of outgoing Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador congratulating projected president Claudia Sheinbaum is displayed at a hotel in Mexico City on June 3.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador has congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her expected win in Sunday's presidential election.

"With all my affection and respect I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum who came out victorious with an ample margin. She will be the first (female) President of Mexico... but also the President, possibly, with most votes obtained in all of the history of our country," he said in a video posted on X.

López Obrador also congratulated the other presidential candidates and the Mexican people, saying he was proud of the large turnout.

Mexico's expected president Sheinbaum pledges to govern all Mexicans "without distinction"

From CNN's Michael Rios

Claudia Sheinbaum addresses supporters in Mexico City on Monday, June 3.

Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to the announcement of her projected victory in Mexico's presidential election early Monday morning, saying her administration would govern all Mexicans “without distinction,” even though not everyone supports her policies.

“Our duty is and will always be to look after every single Mexican without distinction. So even though many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we will have to walk in peace and harmony to continue building a fair and more prosperous Mexico,” she told supporters in a speech.

She also spoke about the historical significance of becoming the first female president of the country.

Sheinbaum said her two rivals in the race, Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, had called to congratulate her on her projected victory.

Sheinbaum, the candidate from the ruling party, received the most votes in Sunday's elections, according to preliminary results from the National Electoral Institute.

The Electoral Court must validate the presidential election, and if confirmed, Sheinbaum will start her presidency on October 1.

Sheinbaum's large margin shows power of Mexico's ruling party, CNN journalist says

From CNN's Kathleen Magramo

Ruling party presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum leaves the polling station where she voted during general elections in Mexico City, on June 2.

Even though Claudia Sheinbaum was expected to win during campaign polls, her large margin in the votes came as a shock, CNN’s Gustavo Valdes reports from Mexico City.

Sheinbaum might get up to 60% of the vote, which is even higher than outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador when he was elected six years ago, Valdes said.

Sheinbaum is the candidate for the ruling Morena party.

"That gives you an idea of the political power that López Obrador has amassed over the past six years," Valdes told CNN's Rosemary Church.

Valdes said voters told CNN that a woman president would help change Mexico's image of being a "macho" country, where patriarchal culture impedes women's advancements.

"Mexico has actually changed its laws to encourage and actually force the parties to have more female candidates. So so there's a very equal division of power between many woman in congress and the governorships," Valdes said.

Humans are hard-wired to dream, to create, to innovate. Each of us seeks to do work that gives us purpose — to write a great novel, to make a discovery, to build strong communities, to care for the sick. The urge to connect to the core of our work lives in all of us. But today, we spend too much time consumed by the drudgery of work on tasks that zap our time, creativity and energy. To reconnect to the soul of our work, we don’t just need a better way of doing the same things. We need a whole new way to work.

Today, we are bringing the power of next-generation AI to work. Introducing Microsoft 365 Copilot — your copilot for work . It combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with your data in the Microsoft Graph and the Microsoft 365 apps to turn your words into the most powerful productivity tool on the planet.

“Today marks the next major step in the evolution of how we interact with computing, which will fundamentally change the way we work and unlock a new wave of productivity growth,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “With our new copilot for work, we’re giving people more agency and making technology more accessible through the most universal interface — natural language.”

Copilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 in two ways. It works alongside you, embedded in the Microsoft 365 apps you use every day — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and more — to unleash creativity, unlock productivity and uplevel skills. Today we’re also announcing an entirely new experience: Business Chat . Business Chat works across the LLM, the Microsoft 365 apps, and your data — your calendar, emails, chats, documents, meetings and contacts — to do things you’ve never been able to do before. You can give it natural language prompts like “Tell my team how we updated the product strategy,” and it will generate a status update based on the morning’s meetings, emails and chat threads.

With Copilot, you’re always in control. You decide what to keep, modify or discard. Now, you can be more creative in Word, more analytical in Excel, more expressive in PowerPoint, more productive in Outlook and more collaborative in Teams.

Microsoft 365 Copilot transforms work in three ways:

Unleash creativity. With Copilot in Word, you can jump-start the creative process so you never start with a blank slate again. Copilot gives you a first draft to edit and iterate on — saving hours in writing, sourcing, and editing time. Sometimes Copilot will be right, other times usefully wrong — but it will always put you further ahead. You’re always in control as the author, driving your unique ideas forward, prompting Copilot to shorten, rewrite or give feedback. Copilot in PowerPoint helps you create beautiful presentations with a simple prompt, adding relevant content from a document you made last week or last year. And with Copilot in Excel, you can analyze trends and create professional-looking data visualizations in seconds.

Unlock productivity. We all want to focus on the 20% of our work that really matters, but 80% of our time is consumed with busywork that bogs us down. Copilot lightens the load. From summarizing long email threads to quickly drafting suggested replies, Copilot in Outlook helps you clear your inbox in minutes, not hours. And every meeting is a productive meeting with Copilot in Teams. It can summarize key discussion points — including who said what and where people are aligned and where they disagree — and suggest action items, all in real time during a meeting. And with Copilot in Power Platform, anyone can automate repetitive tasks, create chatbots and go from idea to working app in minutes.

GitHub data shows that Copilot promises to unlock productivity for everyone. Among developers who use GitHub Copilot, 88% say they are more productive, 74% say that they can focus on more satisfying work, and 77% say it helps them spend less time searching for information or examples.

But Copilot doesn’t just supercharge individual productivity. It creates a new knowledge model for every organization — harnessing the massive reservoir of data and insights that lies largely inaccessible and untapped today. Business Chat works across all your business data and apps to surface the information and insights you need from a sea of data — so knowledge flows freely across the organization, saving you valuable time searching for answers. You will be able to access Business Chat from Microsoft 365.com, from Bing when you’re signed in with your work account, or from Teams.

Uplevel skills. Copilot makes you better at what you’re good at and lets you quickly master what you’ve yet to learn. The average person uses only a handful of commands — such as “animate a slide” or “insert a table” — from the thousands available across Microsoft 365. Now, all that rich functionality is unlocked using just natural language. And this is only the beginning.

Copilot will fundamentally change how people work with AI and how AI works with people. As with any new pattern of work, there’s a learning curve — but those who embrace this new way of working will quickly gain an edge.

The Copilot System: Enterprise-ready AI

Microsoft is uniquely positioned to deliver enterprise-ready AI with the Copilot System . Copilot is more than OpenAI’s ChatGPT embedded into Microsoft 365. It’s a sophisticated processing and orchestration engine working behind the scenes to combine the power of LLMs, including GPT-4, with the Microsoft 365 apps and your business data in the Microsoft Graph — now accessible to everyone through natural language.

Grounded in your business data. AI-powered LLMs are trained on a large but limited corpus of data. The key to unlocking productivity in business lies in connecting LLMs to your business data — in a secure, compliant, privacy-preserving way. Microsoft 365 Copilot has real-time access to both your content and context in the Microsoft Graph. This means it generates answers anchored in your business content — your documents, emails, calendar, chats, meetings, contacts and other business data — and combines them with your working context — the meeting you’re in now, the email exchanges you’ve had on a topic, the chat conversations you had last week — to deliver accurate, relevant, contextual responses.

Built on Microsoft’s comprehensive approach to security, compliance and privacy. Copilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 and automatically inherits all your company’s valuable security, compliance, and privacy policies and processes. Two-factor authentication, compliance boundaries, privacy protections, and more make Copilot the AI solution you can trust.

Architected to protect tenant, group and individual data. We know data leakage is a concern for customers. Copilot LLMs are not trained on your tenant data or your prompts. Within your tenant, our time-tested permissioning model ensures that data won’t leak across user groups. And on an individual level, Copilot presents only data you can access using the same technology that we’ve been using for years to secure customer data.

Integrated into the apps millions use every day. Microsoft 365 Copilot is integrated in the productivity apps millions of people use and rely on every day for work and life — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and more. An intuitive and consistent user experience ensures it looks, feels and behaves the same way in Teams as it does in Outlook, with a shared design language for prompts, refinements and commands.

Designed to learn new skills.  Microsoft 365 Copilot’s foundational skills are a game changer for productivity: It can already create, summarize, analyze, collaborate and automate using your specific business content and context. But it doesn’t stop there. Copilot knows how to command apps (e.g., “animate this slide”) and work across apps, translating a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation. And Copilot is designed to learn new skills. For example, with Viva Sales, Copilot can learn how to connect to CRM systems of record to pull customer data — like interaction and order histories — into communications. As Copilot learns about new domains and processes, it will be able to perform even more sophisticated tasks and queries.

Committed to building responsibly

At Microsoft, we are guided by our AI principles and Responsible AI Standard and decades of research on AI, grounding and privacy-preserving machine learning. A multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers and policy experts reviews our AI systems for potential harms and mitigations — refining training data, filtering to limit harmful content, query- and result-blocking sensitive topics, and applying Microsoft technologies like InterpretML and Fairlearn to help detect and correct data bias. We make it clear how the system makes decisions by noting limitations, linking to sources, and prompting users to review, fact-check and adjust content based on subject-matter expertise.

Moving boldly as we learn

In the months ahead, we’re bringing Copilot to all our productivity apps—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Viva, Power Platform, and more. We’ll share more on pricing and licensing soon. Earlier this month we announced Dynamics 365 Copilot as the world’s first AI Copilot in both CRM and ERP to bring the next-generation AI to every line of business.

Everyone deserves to find purpose and meaning in their work — and Microsoft 365 Copilot can help. To serve the unmet needs of our customers, we must move quickly and responsibly, learning as we go. We’re testing Copilot with a small group of customers to get feedback and improve our models as we scale, and we will expand to more soon.

Mexico Joins List of Latin American Nations That Have Elected Female Presidents

In contrast to the United States, the region has had more than a dozen female leaders, many in democracies that were once under the sway of authoritarian governments.

By Simon Romero

Reporting from Mexico City

The presidential election in the United States this year is, yet again, a contest between two men. But in Latin America, as Mexico’s milestone election showed over the weekend, electing a woman as president has become remarkably routine.

Claudia Sheinbaum, who won Mexico’s election in a landslide against another female candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, joins at least a dozen other women who have served as presidents of Latin American countries since the 1970s.

This growing list includes past leaders of two of Latin America’s largest countries, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina, and those in smaller nations like Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua and Xiomara Castro, the current president of Honduras.

The ascension of women to such heights spotlights how some democracies in Latin America that emerged from the ashes of authoritarian rule have proven exceptionally open to tearing down barriers to political representation.

Jennifer Piscopo, a professor of gender and politics at Royal Holloway, a college at the University of London, said that women who had become president in Latin America generally followed a pattern of being nominated by incumbent parties already enjoying high levels of voter support.

Citing the examples of Ms. Rousseff in Brazil, Michelle Bachelet in Chile and Laura Chinchilla in Costa Rica, Ms. Piscopo said such parties “enjoy the best of both worlds,” first by reaping electoral benefits from their strong reputation going into an election.

Artificial Intelligence Computing Leadership from NVIDIA

Press Release Details

Nvidia nim revolutionizes model deployment, now available to transform world’s millions of developers into generative ai developers.

  • 150+ Partners Across Every Layer of AI Ecosystem Embedding NIM Inference Microservices to Speed Enterprise AI Application Deployments From Weeks to Minutes
  • NVIDIA Developer Program Members Gain Free Access to NIM for Research, Development and Testing

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 02, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- COMPUTEX -- NVIDIA today announced that the world’s 28 million developers can now download NVIDIA NIM ™ — inference microservices that provide models as optimized containers — to deploy on clouds, data centers or workstations, giving them the ability to easily build generative AI applications for copilots, chatbots and more, in minutes rather than weeks.

These new generative AI applications are becoming increasingly complex and often utilize multiple models with different capabilities for generating text, images, video, speech and more. NVIDIA NIM dramatically increases developer productivity by providing a simple, standardized way to add generative AI to their applications.

NIM also enables enterprises to maximize their infrastructure investments. For example, running Meta Llama 3-8B in a NIM produces up to 3x more generative AI tokens on accelerated infrastructure than without NIM. This lets enterprises boost efficiency and use the same amount of compute infrastructure to generate more responses.

Nearly 200 technology partners — including Cadence, Cloudera , Cohesity , DataStax , NetApp , Scale AI and Synopsys — are integrating NIM into their platforms to speed generative AI deployments for domain-specific applications, such as copilots, code assistants and digital human avatars. Hugging Face is now offering NIM — starting with Meta Llama 3 .

“Every enterprise is looking to add generative AI to its operations, but not every enterprise has a dedicated team of AI researchers,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Integrated into platforms everywhere, accessible to developers everywhere, running everywhere — NVIDIA NIM is helping the technology industry put generative AI in reach for every organization.”

Enterprises can deploy AI applications in production with NIM through the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software platform. Starting next month, members of the NVIDIA Developer Program can access NIM for free for research, development and testing on their preferred infrastructure.

40+ NIM Microservices Power Gen AI Models Across Modalities NIM containers are pre-built to speed model deployment for GPU-accelerated inference and can include NVIDIA CUDA ® software, NVIDIA Triton Inference Server ™ and NVIDIA TensorRT™-LLM software.

Over 40 NVIDIA and community models are available to experience as NIM endpoints on ai.nvidia.com , including Databricks DBRX , Google’s open model Gemma, Meta Llama 3, Microsoft Phi-3, Mistral Large, Mixtral 8x22B and Snowflake Arctic.

Developers can now access NVIDIA NIM microservices for Meta Llama 3 models from the Hugging Face AI platform. This lets developers easily access and run the Llama 3 NIM in just a few clicks using Hugging Face Inference Endpoints, powered by NVIDIA GPUs on their preferred cloud.

Enterprises can use NIM to run applications for generating text, images and video, speech and digital humans. With NVIDIA BioNeMo ™ NIM microservices for digital biology, researchers can build novel protein structures to accelerate drug discovery.

Dozens of healthcare companies are deploying NIM to power generative AI inference across a range of applications, including surgical planning, digital assistants, drug discovery and clinical trial optimization.

With new NVIDIA ACE NIM microservices , developers can easily build and operate interactive, lifelike digital humans in applications for customer service, telehealth, education, gaming and entertainment.

Hundreds of AI Ecosyst em Partners Embedding NIM Platform providers including Canonical , Red Hat , Nutanix and VMware (acquired by Broadcom) are supporting NIM on open-source KServe or enterprise solutions. AI application companies Hippocratic AI , Glean , Kinetica and Redis are also deploying NIM to power generative AI inference.

Leading AI tools and MLOps partners — including Amazon SageMaker, Microsoft Azure AI, Dataiku, DataRobot, deepset , Domino Data Lab, LangChain , Llama Index , Replicate , Run.ai, Saturn Cloud , Securiti AI and Weights & Biases — have also embedded NIM into their platforms to enable developers to build and deploy domain-specific generative AI applications with optimized inference.

Global system integrators and service delivery partners Accenture, Deloitte, Infosys, Latentview , Quantiphi , SoftServe, TCS and Wipro have created NIM competencies to help the world’s enterprises quickly develop and deploy production AI strategies.

Enterprises can run NIM-enabled applications virtually anywhere, including on NVIDIA-Certified Systems ™ from global infrastructure manufacturers Cisco, Dell Technologies , Hewlett-Packard Enterprise , Lenovo and Supermicro, as well as server manufacturers ASRock Rack , ASUS , GIGABYTE , Ingrasys , Inventec , Pegatron , QCT, Wistron and Wiwynn. NIM microservices have also been integrated into Amazon Web Services , Google Cloud , Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure .

Titans of Industry Amp Up Gener ative AI With NIM Industry leaders Foxconn, Pegatron, Amdocs , Lowe’s, ServiceNow and Siemens are among the businesses using NIM for generative AI applications in manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, retail, customer service and more:

  • Foxconn — the world’s largest electronics manufacturer — is using NIM in the development of domain-specific LLMs embedded into a variety of internal systems and processes in its AI factories for smart manufacturing, smart cities and smart electric vehicles.
  • Pegatron — a Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company — is leveraging NIM for Project TaME, a Taiwan Mixtral of Experts model designed to advance the development of local LLMs for industries.
  • Amdocs — a leading global provider of software and services to communications and media companies — is using NIM to run a customer billing LLM that significantly lowers the cost of tokens, improves accuracy by up to 30% and reduces latency by 80%, driving near real-time responses.
  • Lowe’s — a FORTUNE ® 50 home improvement company — is using generative AI for a variety of use cases. For example, the retailer is leveraging NVIDIA NIM inference microservices to elevate experiences for associates and customers.
  • ServiceNow — the AI platform for business transformation — announced earlier this year that it was one of the first platform providers to access NIM to enable fast, scalable and more cost-effective LLM development and deployment for its customers. NIM microservices are integrated within the Now AI multimodal model and are available to customers that have ServiceNow’s generative AI experience, Now Assist, installed.
  • Siemens — a global technology company focused on industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare — is integrating its operational technology with NIM microservices for shop floor AI workloads. It is also building an on-premises version of its Industrial Copilot for Machine Operators using NIM.

Availability Developers can experiment with NVIDIA microservices at ai.nvidia.com at no charge. Enterprises can deploy production-grade NIM microservices with NVIDIA AI Enterprise running on NVIDIA-Certified Systems and leading cloud platforms. Starting next month, members of the NVIDIA Developer Program will gain free access to NIM for research and testing.
