3 Idiots -- Film Review

OAKLAND — “Life is a race: If you’re not fast enough, you’ll get trampled,” booms engineering college dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani). The stakes are high: in India 2.0, students whose parents have sacrificed everything for their education are expected to reach the top. But three brainy misfits — Farhan (R. Madhavan), Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Rancho (Aamir Khan) — find a common bond when they realize that their futures aren’t exactly inscribed in a mathematics book.

Written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, whose two previous films also tweaked Indian sensibilities with great commercial and critical success, “3 Idiots” has dominated at the boxoffice this holiday season. In India, the Reliance Big Pictures release collected more than 1 billion rupees ($21.3 million) in its first four days of release.

A great part of the film’s appeal is Aamir Khan, who has come to specialize in heroic iconoclasts, such as a rebellious villager in “Lagaan” or a visionary teacher of special-needs kids in “Taare Zameen Par.” As Rancho, a young engineer of dazzling inventiveness, Khan conveys smarts, mischief and, finally, compassion, as he spurs his friends on to greatness before he mysteriously disappears.

The film’s good points, though, are marred by a slow start and a nerve-jangling soundtrack (except for the charming “Aal Izz Well”). Perceptive, subtle acting work by Khan, Madhavan and Joshi also clashes with buffoonish performances by Omi Vaidya, as an odious school rival, and veteran character actor Irani, whose character is cursed with an unnecessary — and unfunny — lisp.

Hirani’s screenplay also jumps back and forth in time over a 10-year period with limited success, leaving the viewer often wondering whether we’re seeing scenes set in the present or the past.

Despite its flaws, “3 Idiots” conveys a powerful message about how valuable your friends can be when they push you toward reaching your own highest potential.

Violence & Scariness

A character pretends to be unwell and causes an airplane to land in emergency. There is an elaborate sequence where people are humiliated and made to strip down to their underwear. Multiple characters are given electric shocks. There is a long childbirth scene where a character in labor continually screams in pain. Someone jumps off a building attempting suicide; there is severe blood, injury, and prolonged hospitalization with surgery scenes. Another character commits suicide by hanging themselves. There are intense arguments and conversation about someone committing suicide by jumping off a train. In multiple scenes, characters smash alcohol bottles on the ground aggressively. Threats of physical violence are made; characters are slapped, kicked, beaten with umbrellas, and their heads are banged. Someone is tied up in a car. There are jokes made about missiles and mass destruction. An individual holds various people at gunpoint. A character with paralysis is rushed to the hospital. Rape "jokes" are present as are jokes about nuclear destruction.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Characters get drunk on multiple occasions, some leading to fights and arguments. In one elaborate sequence, characters trespass on, and vandalize, private property after drinking.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

There is romance, flirting, and some kissing. Adult magazines are briefly shown but no nudity seen. A character talks about posters that have naked women on them. Sexual innuendo and double-meaning jokes. A character elopes.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide.

Positive Role Models

Rancho is carefree, unbothered, and honest. He doesn't care for social obligations, petty rules, and accolades. He helps his friends, Farhan and Raju, tremendously throughout the film and enables them to find their own identity. Raju overcomes his fear-ridden way of living and starts believing in himself. Farhan chooses his passion over an unhappy life as an engineer.

Positive Messages

Life is not a race. Unhealthy competition in the education sphere has dangerous impacts on students. Good friendships must be valued. One must follow their passions and find their own identity to be truly happy. Iffy humor.

Diverse Representations

The film centers around three male friends. All characters are Indian; the film pans across Shimla and Ladakh. A character has paralysis and their role is limited to their condition. Themes around suicide and what can lead people to having such thoughts. There are multiple conversations and jokes made about dowry. Men are shown laughing during a speech that makes countless references to rape.

It follows three friends, Rancho ( Aamir Khan ), Farhan ( R. Madhavan ), and Raju (Sharman Joshi), during their college years and beyond. There are intense arguments and some violence including slapping, head smashing, kicking, and someone being repeatedly hit with an umbrella. Bottles are smashed on the ground, threats of beatings and gun violence are made, and someone is tied up in a moving car. Themes of suicide run throughout. In one scene, seniors rag and bully their juniors in college by making them do humiliating things while only dressed in their underwear. There is a prolonged labour sequence where a character cries in pain and distress. Characters drink throughout, getting drunk on multiple occasions, which leads to acts of trespassing and vandalism. Language is fairly mild, with "ass" and "piss" about as extreme as it gets. However, there are a number of rape "jokes" made throughout. The film is in Hindi with English subtitles. What's the Story?

3 IDIOTS follows college best friends, Farhan ( R. Madhavan ) and Raju (Sharman Joshi), who drive down to Shimla in search for Rancho ( Aamir Khan ), their long-lost buddy. During their journey, they recall the times they shared together, the mischief they got up to, and all that they learned from Rancho.

Is It Any Good?

This comic drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani is a fun-filled entertainer that simultaneously dissects the educational system for its darkest flaws. 3 Idiots dives deep into the world of engineering and college life, tackling various aspects of how alienating student life can be. Refreshing in his ability to break rules at every nook and corner, Khan's Rancho is a mischievous yet lovable lead who shines throughout. The way the film handles themes around suicide is also as pertinent as it is poignant given the devastating reality behind such events. However, where 3 Idiots fails is in its blatant obsession over seriously problematic rape jokes that continually punctuate the film. The exploitative and unnecessary use of such derogatory humor is extremely disappointing in an otherwise well-constructed film.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how 3 Idiots dealt with suicide. How did mental and emotional stress caused by education and society impact the character's well-being? What can be done to help with stress?

How did the film represent drinking ? Did you think any of the characters drank too much? What are some of the real-life consequences of drinking?

What made Rancho, Farhan, and Raju's friendship so honest and genuine? How were they different from a character like Chatur?

Which characters displayed traits of courage , empathy , and teamwork in the film? Why are they such important character strengths to have?

Did you find any of the humor problematic? If so, what was it and why?

Doesn't let its more serious theme of "self-actualization" get in the way of the entertainment.

A comedy about three college buddies that doesn’t let its more serious theme of “self-actualization” get in the way of the entertainment, “ 3 Idiots ” takes a while to lay out its game plan but pays off emotionally in its second half. Quality mainstream item from producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and helmer Rajkumar Hirani, best known for their 2003 hit “Munna Bhai MBBS,” comes laden with must-see smarts, especially super-choosy star Aamir Khan (“ Lagaan “). Crossover potential is zero, but the Dec. 23 release should score some intelligent numbers among Indian auds at home and abroad over the year-end frame.

Director Janicza Bravo Squashes Hopes for More Seasons of Rebecca Hall Starrer ‘The Listeners’: ‘There’s Something Sexy About Saying It’s Just This’

Script is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s 2004 bestseller, “Five Point Someone,” first published in English and later translated into Hindi. But where Bhagat’s novel focused entirely on the college-exam anxieties and romantic antics of three student friends, “3 Idiots” expands the material into a tale of almost epic proportions, as two pals set out on a journey to find the third who influenced their lives so much at university 10 years earlier.

Popular on Variety

Warm-up has Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) getting a call from oily businessman Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) that he knows where to find their former fellow student, Rancho (Khan), who mysteriously disappeared after graduation. Farhan rounds up his old friend Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and, with no choice but to take Chatur along, the pair set off on the long drive north from New Delhi to the hill town of Shimla.

En route, Farhan’s mind goes back to their days at engineering college, where he and Raju felt pressured by family and society to succeed: Raju came from a poor background and Farhan (who really wanted to be a photographer) from a conservative, middle-class one. Their liberating friendship with roommate Rancho — aka Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad — gave them a whole new perspective on life.

From his delayed entrance on, pint-sized Khan dominates the movie as Rancho, a pixie-like, free-thinking Gujarati who isn’t fazed by normal pressures (encapsulated by his catchphrase, “Aal izz well”) and has a talent for creative problem-solving. This leads to a running battle with pompous, know-it-all principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe (vet Boman Irani), nicknamed Prof. Virus, but attracts the romantic attention of the prof’s daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor).

In the first of several jumbo-sized flashbacks, the pic careens along with likable student japes until it springs a twist before intermission that throws new light on Rancho’s character. As the friends continue their odyssey in part two, more flashbacks show Farhan and Raju being influenced by Rancho’s philosophy on life, for good and for ill.

Most of the character development is packed into this second half, which packs several unexpected dramatic reversals despite the generally light tone. Khan’s ability to play almost childlike characters, which he exploited in his 2007 directorial debut, “Taare zameen par,” is well deployed, especially in the latter stages as Rancho realizes the downsides of his influence. Final reels, which return to the present time amid the spectacular mountain scenery of Ladakh, have a moving, big-hearted inclusiveness.

Aside from one number centered on Raju in hospital, the catchy musical segments are largely decorative. The best-staged performance is the nonsense number “Zoobi doobi,” which parodies Bollywood cliches. Technically, the pic is smooth in all departments.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS.

Come to think of it, 3 IDIOTS carries a huge 'burden' on its shoulders: The 'burden' of humungous expectations. And it's not without reasons...

  • 3 IDIOTS is Aamir's next release after the record-breaker GHAJINI.
  • 3 IDIOTS is Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's third film together, after MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, landmark films.
  • Three actors from the path-breaking RANG DE BASANTI team - Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman - team up yet again. Plus, Aamir's teaming up with Hirani. It couldn't get bigger!

3 IDIOTS is over-hyped and that could be dangerous for any film since it's the expectations which kill a film if the content doesn't match up to the hype. In this case, all izz well!

Now let's demystify the myths... 3 IDIOTS is not about idiots or nincompoops. It's about three engineering students who believe in ' I 'll D o I t O n my T erms' and that's what the three characters achieve in life and that's what Hirani, Chopra, Aamir eventually achieve at the end of the movie. Making a movie on their terms!

One more thing! You cannot draw parallels with any other film, past or present, successful or unsuccessful. And though people may draw parallels with GHAJINI or the MUNNABHAI series, it would be sacrilege to do so. 3 IDIOTS [based on a novel 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat] doesn't tilt, it stands tall.

Here's yet another illusion: 3 IDIOTS belongs to Aamir Khan. Yes, it does, but also to R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor and Omi, the entrant in Hindi movies, who delivers an equally sterling performance. The film would be incomplete without any of these characters.

To cut a long story short, all you'd like to say about the film is, All izz very, very, very, very, very well. Watch this film to know what it means!

Two friends [R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] embark on a quest for a lost buddy. As they make their way through the perilous landscape [Shimla, Manali, Ladakh], another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend - the irrepressible free-thinker Rancho [Aamir Khan], who, in his unique way, touched and changed their lives.

It's a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho's romance with the spirited Pia [Kareena Kapoor] and his clash with and oppressive mentor, Viru Sahastrabudhhe [Boman Irani]. And then one day, suddenly, Rancho vanishes...

Who was he? Where did he come from? Why did he leave? The friend who influenced and inspired them to think creatively and independently, even as the conformist world called them three idiots. Where is the original idiot now?

Hirani is a genius and that has been proved twice in the past. He proves it for the third time with 3 IDIOTS. Screenplay writers Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and screenplay associate Vidhu Vinod Chopra narrate a story that's straight out of life. A story that each one of us can relate to or identify with.

Very often, we've read news-reports of students committing suicides because they've to live up to the family's pressure/expectations. This film depicts it at the very start, when a student commits suicide. But the issue doesn't end there, for 3 IDIOTS raises a pertinent question: Was it suicide or murder?

Hirani balances the rough and smooth incidents in their lives beautifully. The sequences in the campus, right from the ragging sequence at the start, to Omi's speech when the word 'chamatkaar' is changed to 'balatkaar' [superb; will bring the house down], to the trio getting caught in an embarrassing situation at the reception of Kareena's sister [Mona Singh], to the dinner sequence at Sharman's house, to Kareena and Aamir driving Sharman's seriously ill father on their bike to the hospital... the funny moments would make your jaws ache.

The interval point is a shocker. The point at which the first half ends will leave you stunned. Now what was that? Kahani mein twist!

The mystery is solved soon after the intermission ends and a new journey begins. That's one of the USPs of the film. Just when you think that the story would be solved, a new story begins. Of course, the pace dips slightly in its second hour, especially during the delivery sequence of Mona [which may appear filmy to a few], but the immediate sequence, when the baby boy is born and also the subsequent sequence between Boman and Aamir bring the film back on track. The culmination to the film is novel and yes, it's a master stroke from the writing point of view!

Every person behind the camera gives his/her best to the film. Hirani and Joshi's screenplay is the mainstay of the film. If you fondly recall 'Gandhigiri' from their previous film LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, you'd have a new phrase to chew on this time: 'All Izz Well'. Muraleedharan C.K.'s cinematography is awesome. Note the aerial view at the very start, when Madhavan and Sharman begin the journey to Shimla or the picture perfect look of Ladakh... the DoP does a magnificent job.

Shantanu Moitra's music may sound plain ordinary to ears, but when viewed on screen, the score is just perfect. 'Give Me Some Sunshine', 'All Is Well', 'Zoobie Doobie' are three tracks that would grow on you after you've watched the film. The choreography of 'All Izz Well' [Avit Dias] and 'Zoobie Doobie' [Bosco-Caesar] are eye-catching. The background score [Sanjay Wandrekar, Atul Raninga, Shantanu Moitra] is right.

3 IDIOTS belongs to everyone. But, yes, there's no denying that Aamir makes you forget all his past achievements as you watch the amazing actor play Rancho. To state that this ranks amongst his finest works would be an understatement. Madhavan is incredible, especially in the sequence when he explains his point of view to his father [Pareekshit Sahani]. Sharman is outstanding from start to end. This was a difficult role to portray and only an actor of calibre could've pulled it off. Boman is superb as the vicious head of the institute. The scenes between Aamir and Boman are extra-ordinary and it's a treat to watch these two powerful actors clash on the big screen, without getting overdramatic. Boman's appearance, mannerisms and dialogue delivery are exemplary.

The length of Kareena's role may not be as much as Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman, but she registers a strong impact nonetheless. Omi is excellent and the viewers are sure to love his acidic tongue and gestures in the movie. Mona Singh doesn't get much scope. Jaaved Jaffery is competent. Pareekshit Sahani is decent.

On the whole, 3 IDIOTS easily ranks amongst Aamir, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's finest films. Do yourself and your family a favour: Watch 3 IDIOTS. It's emotional, it's entertaining, it's enlightening. The film has tremendous youth appeal and feel-good factor to work in a big way.

Bollywood movie: 3 Idiots

  • Recommended

Time Out says

Discerning Bollywood fans are in for a treat: a comedy we can laugh with rather than at. Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Joshi) embark on a road trip to Ladakh, in the Himalayas, to track down long-lost buddy Rancho (Khan). The latter is introduced via lengthy flashbacks detailing the antics of the ‘three idiots’ during their college engineering days. But why did Rancho disappear mysteriously after graduating? The film’s main strength lies in its ability to address head-on the possible failure of higher education in contemporary India. This is conveyed via Hirani’s trademark light-hearted touch. Consequently, the clichéd ‘make your passion your profession’ premise never feels preachy. Overlong, this quirky well-acted film proves, as the title track says, that generally ‘all is well’ with commercial Hindi cinema.

The story revolves around three engineering students and their college life. It highlights their struggles, friendship, and aspirations.

Performances

250 Words Essay on 3 Idiots Movie Review

The Indian film “3 Idiots”, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a potent blend of humor, drama, and enlightenment, making it a must-watch for any cinema enthusiast. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel “Five Point Someone”, but it transcends the book’s confines to deliver a poignant message about the educational system.

Plot and Characters

The narrative revolves around three engineering students – Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, played by Aamir Khan, Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi respectively. Rancho challenges the traditional education system, advocating for passion over rote learning. His philosophy clashes with the college director, Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), who epitomizes the rigid educational system.

Cinematic Techniques

The film employs a non-linear narrative, interspersing present events with flashbacks, keeping viewers engaged. The cinematography captures the scenic beauty of Ladakh and the hustle of Delhi, adding depth to the narrative.

Themes and Messages

“3 Idiots” explores themes of friendship, love, parental pressure, and the pitfalls of rote learning. It underscores the importance of understanding over memorization, and following one’s passion, encapsulated in Rancho’s mantra, “Pursue excellence, and success will follow.”

In conclusion, “3 Idiots” is a compelling critique of the Indian educational system, wrapped in the garb of a buddy film. It is a masterpiece that entertains, enlightens, and leaves viewers with food for thought about their educational journeys.

500 Words Essay on 3 Idiots Movie Review

The film revolves around the lives of Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Joshi), and Ranchoddas ‘Rancho’ Shamaldas Chanchad (Khan). The narrative unfolds through Farhan’s perspective, who, pressured by his parents, is pursuing an engineering degree despite his passion for wildlife photography. Raju, coming from a poverty-stricken family, views education as a way out of his economic hardships. Rancho, the ‘idiot’ who questions conventional wisdom and the education system, encourages his friends to follow their passions.

Themes and Symbolism

3 Idiots is not just a film about friendship and love; it delves deeper into the societal pressure faced by students in India. It criticizes the rote-learning system, which stifles creativity and encourages competition over understanding. Rancho, the heart of the movie, symbolizes rebellion against this system. He believes in understanding concepts rather than memorizing textbooks, a philosophy that is reflected in his famous dialogue, “Don’t chase success; chase excellence, and success will follow.”

Performances and Direction

Rajkumar Hirani’s direction is top-notch. He successfully manages to blend humor with serious issues, creating a film that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. The screenplay is tight, with each scene contributing to the overall narrative.

Impact and Conclusion

3 Idiots is more than a movie; it’s a critique of the Indian education system and a call for change. It encourages students to break free from societal norms and pursue their passions. The film’s impact was such that it sparked debates about the need for education reform in India.

Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students

Description of the 3 idiots film.

The three essential roles of the 3 Idiots film are Aamir Khan as Rancchoddas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad or Phunsukh Wangdu, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi. They studied engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering and shared a room in a hostel. Apart from them, the additional stars are Kareena Kapoor as Pia, Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam (Silencer), Boman Irani as Viru Sahastrebuddhe (Virus), Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi,  and Mona Singh as Mona Sahastrebuddhe (pia’s sister).

The Imperial College of Engineering is one of India's best colleges for engineering studies. Rancho was admitted as a rich man's son in India, while Farhan and Raju are from an average family. Farhan dreamed of being a wildlife photographer, but his father insisted he study engineering because it was his wish. Indeed, Rancho was the son of a gardener.

He irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unique answers. Joy was also a student of the Imperial College of Engineering. She had requested the dean to extend his major project on the compassionate grounds that his father had suffered a stroke. But, Virus refused, saying he was utterly unmoved by his son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho condemns the learning system of the institution, blaming it for Lobo's death.

Threatened by Rancho's talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an "idiot," and he attempts to destroy his friendship with Raju and Farhan. In contrast, (Omi Vaidya) Chatur Ramalingam, or "Silencer," is the model student in the eyes of ViruS, who always wants to get high marks through memorizing rather than understanding.

3 Idiots Film Review- Opinions

The 3 Idiots film will help differentiate between the students who like to memorize only without understanding and those who want to understand topics rather than memorize. The audience will get a clear concept of the duties and responsibilities of a successful student. I immensely enjoyed this film for its fantastic story, casting, dialogue, and music.

Strengths of the 3 Idiots Film

Don't run behind the success; achieve excellence first; the success will automatically come looking for you. Be always creative in your answers, work, & things, which helps you become more capable of your own life.

Based on the 348,000 responses in IMBD,  the 3 Idiots film obtained a rating of 8.4/10.

Weaknesses of the 3 Idiots Film

The leading role in this film is Aamir Khan, who did not struggle enough to achieve success. But it is a fact that struggle and handwork are inevitable for success.

3 Idiots Film Evaluation with Evidence

lessons from the 3 idiots film.

3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a film of impeccable pedigree. It’s a breezy entertainer and it’s got its heart in the right place, but it appears to be lacking in the naiive idealism and old-fashioned sincerity that propelled Hirani’s two Munnabhai films to cult status. From the man behind those decade-defining Munnabhai films, however, it is far from his best work. I’m going with three out of five for director Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots, an earnest but calculated effort that runs, but never flies. Watch it anyway, because it’s the season to be jolly, and good laughs are guaranteed.
3 Idiots is the perfect end to an exciting year for India: the year when the aam aadmi voted in progress, liberalism, secularism and turned his back to corruption, communalism, regionalism. The three idiots, Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan Qureshi (R Madhavan), are perfect archetypes of the new age Indian who is essentially a non-conformist, questioning outmoded givens, choosing to live life on his own terms and chartering new roads that consciously skirt the rat race. Of course, they begin on the beaten track — due to societal/parental pressure — but refuse to become cogs in the wheel.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That’s the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there’s 3 IDIOTS.To cut a long story short, all you’d like to say about the film is, All izz very, very, very, very, very well. Watch this film to know what it means! On the whole, 3 IDIOTS easily ranks amongst Aamir, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s finest films. Do yourself and your family a favour: Watch 3 IDIOTS. It’s emotional, it’s entertaining, it’s enlightening. The film has tremendous youth appeal and feel-good factor to work in a big way.

3 Idiots is a very average bit of fluffy Bollywood masala that tragically pretends, at times, to be making a profound point, one it loses in repetition. The result is a confused film, one that doesn’t know exactly where it stands, torn between lump-in-the-throat filmmaking and amateurishly written juvenilia. There are a few moments which click, but coming from the duo that created the finest film this decade, this is a massive letdown. This isn’t a bad film, though. By which I mean it conjures up a few moments, it will doubtless make some people cry, and every now and then we glimpse some heart. Yet it hurts to see that this is traditional Bollywood masala schlock, with scenes calculated to tickle and to evoke sympathy. It’s not awful at all, but since when did ‘not bad’ become good? Dr Feelgood doesn’t make the cut this time, and we need to measure him by the high bar his previous excellence has set — by which degree this is a whopper of a disappointment.

Rajkumar Hirani serves you idealism but with utmost conviction. He is able to establish a compelling connect with his audience, qualifying himself as one of the finest filmmakers of his time. Who else can turn something as trivial as pudina chatni into a price indicator? The film redefines idiot as I do it on my own terms. After watching the film, you wont mind being certified as an idiot. If you still dont approve of the film, you are a certified cynic. 3 Idiots is one of the most entertaining films of the decade.

Take a bow Mr Hirani. 3 IDIOTS is a fantastic film, one that every parent, teacher and most importantly students will dig into. Like the jaadu ki jhappi in Munnabhai MBBS, ‘All Is Well’, will soon be a craze across the nation. Hirani this time looks at the education system. The staid, mechanical ways in which education is imparted where students are like machines. There are many scenes that will grip you and others that will have you laughing silly. Like the last scene and the scene at Teacher’s Day when Rancho changes the script. Go watch it… I’d say please watch it… The duo of Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani now has Santa Khan for company.

Visit Site for More   Ratings: 3.5/5  Reviewer: Mayank Shekar  Site:Hindustantimes

Thankfully. This is a film that never undermines Bollywood for its authenticity: it has its alternating emotional highs and lows, a catch-point (aal ij well for jaadu ki jhappi), an invincible hero, and perfect knowledge of when to break into chiffon, song, or the interval. That smart art-form with its own suspensions of disbelief is getting scarcer by generational loss. Before 3 Idiots on screen, you still dont feel like the fourth idiot in the theatre. Thats a non-Bollywood relief. This is the sort of movie youll take home with a smile and a song on your lips, unless the hype has entirely messed up with your expectations.

Visit  Site  for More Ratings: 3/5 Reviewer: Anand Vaishnav Site:Buzz18

Hirani’s clumsy screenplay dilutes the genuinely thought provoking underlying message about following your dreams. 3 Idiots could have been a wonderful light-hearted story about India’s education system and the ever-increasing tribe of aspiring engineers. In parts, the films presents a very relatable picture of students who suppress their dreams and follow the herd. But Rajkumar Hirani treats the overall enterprise like an over-the-top comedy. 3 Idiots is a happy film with a positive message. But you never feel for or root for its characters. It’s just another feel good, time pass watch.

A dying father brings 'His Three Daughters' together, in a sharply written film

Over the years I’ve seen more than my share of dysfunctional-family movies and terminal-illness movies, and even the good ones have trouble sidestepping clichés. So it says something that His Three Daughters , which is about a dysfunctional family coping with a terminal illness, doesn’t feel like a retread.

The writer-director Azazel Jacobs has a knack for putting a fresh, intelligent spin on familiar material, from the high-school misfit comedy Terri to the playful marital drama The Lovers . His latest, His Three Daughters , is a sharply written and beautifully modulated chamber piece, set over a few days inside a Lower Manhattan apartment where three women have gathered to bid farewell to their father, Vincent, who’s in hospice care.

C arrie Coon plays Katie, the oldest of the three sisters. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and teenage daughter, but she hasn’t been around to visit her dad much lately. Elizabeth Olsen plays the youngest, Christina, who’s flown in from her home thousands of miles away.

And then there’s Rachel — that’s Natasha Lyonne . She lives with Vincent in this apartment and has been looking after him for some time. Rachel is estranged from her two sisters, for reasons that aren’t initially clear. Jacobs drops us right into the thick of the tension, then gradually fills in the larger picture.

Some of the friction stems from the fact that Katie and Christina are essentially outsiders on Rachel’s turf. Rachel can claim some moral high ground, since she’s been taking care of their dad while they’ve been busy living their lives and raising families of their own.

How do you live while your brother is dying? 'Suncoast' is a teen take on hospice

Movie Interviews

How do you live while your brother is dying 'suncoast' is a teen take on hospice.

Adding to the two-against-one dynamic is the fact that Rachel isn’t biologically related to her sisters or their father. After Vincent’s first wife died, he married Rachel’s mom and raised Rachel as his own. As Rachel makes needlessly clear to her sisters, she’s no less his daughter than they are.

There are money and class issues, too; Katie looks down on Rachel, claiming all she does is smoke weed all day and make money through sports gambling. And then there’s the matter of real estate. In one contentious conversation, Katie insinuates that Rachel has been taking care of Vincent partly because of her enviable living situation.

In this and every other scene, the acting and the writing have such specificity that you feel you know these characters intimately. Few actors can make anger more mesmerizing than Coon, and her Katie is testy and judgmental, even — or especially — when she tries to seem reasonable.

A birthday party for a dying father chronicles childhood before loss in 'Tótem'

A birthday party for a dying father chronicles childhood before loss in 'Tótem'

It’s hard not to side a lot of the time with Lyonne’s Rachel, who lets the expletives fly as she pushes back defensively against Katie’s insinuations. That leaves Christina in the tough role of peacemaker. She’s earnest and open-hearted by nature, something that comes out when she describes her Deadhead past. In Olsen’s quietly moving performance, we see a woman who often suppresses her feelings to spare those of others.

What distinguishes His Three Daughters from so many movies of its type is that while it’s certainly talky, it never feels as if the characters are trying to explain themselves to you. Rather than coughing up large chunks of backstory, their interactions have the pull of honest, free-flowing conversation.

Much of the dialogue is taken up with the practical and wholly relatable end-of-life details: the difficulties of writing an obituary, or arranging a do-not-resuscitate order, or even dealing with a well-meaning but slightly exasperating hospice care worker. I haven’t seen many movies that so acutely understand the role food plays in a situation like this, where the act of cooking meals for your family or making sure there’s always fresh coffee can be both a drag and a welcome distraction.

Clockwise from left: Wicked, Here, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, Piece by Piece and Blitz.

Here are 25 movies we can't wait to watch this fall

Vincent himself is off-camera for most of the movie, sleeping quietly in his room, though Jacobs wisely gives him — and Jay O. Sanders, the actor playing him — a beautiful moment in the film’s last act.

The question hanging over His Three Daughters is whether the sisters will overcome their estrangement and remain family after Vincent’s gone. Jacobs doesn’t force a resolution, though he does end on a note of hard-won understanding that I found both optimistic and deeply affecting. He’s made a movie that, in the shadow of death, says something essential about how we live.

The 4:30 Movie

The 4:30 Movie (Saban Films) Review

With “The 4:30 Movie,” a lightly likable coming-of-age story and romantic-comedy, writer/director Kevin Smith (“Clerks III,” “Jay and Silent Reboot”) offers low-stakes nostalgia and very little else. Smith’s recent projects play squarely to his established fans, so it stands to reason that there’s a teasing joke about “Clerks IV” early on in this movie. “The 4:30 Movie” is very much for people who only want more of the same from Smith. In this case, that’s a superficially personal, but mostly conventional teen comedy about a plucky young cinephile who woos his crush and also shares a moment with his two best friends.

Light and self-deprecating where “Clerks 3” was depressing and verklempt, “The 4:30 Movie” offers viewers a reassuring trip down memory lane. It’s 1986, and Smith stand-in Brian David (Austin Zajur) and his friends are all abuzz about a triple-header at New Jersey’s own Atlantic Cinemas, now the Smith-owned Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Heights. They’re going to sneak into an R-rated movie, an adaptation of the airport detective novel series “Bucklick,” and Brian David wants to bring Melody (Siena Agudong), too.

The very idea of bringing a girl upsets the otherwise easygoing group dynamic between Brian David, loudmouth horndog Burny (Nicholas Cirillo), and harmless dork Belly (Reed Northrup). They goof around, talk about—and in one scene, hook up—with girls, and largely daydream about movies. That laidback setup is the conceptual equivalent of a layup for Smith, who’s made a career out of stories about precocious slackers who prevail simply because they stand by each other and also really believe in themselves.

A good part of “The 4:30 Movie”’s charm comes from its intimate scale. Like most of Smith’s recent movies, this one looks like it was made by an assortment of his best friends and favorite relatives, including his daughter Harley Quinn Smith, and a Rolodex of celebrity cameos from Smith regulars like Rosario Dawson and Justin Long. The main cast of teenage characters also have a sweet, if somewhat forced chemistry that makes up for a lot of mediocre jokes that may still land with Smith’s loyal viewers.

All of this, including the ultimate fate of Atlantic Cinemas, might surprise Brian David and his friends, who speak to each other with the unearned confidence of young people who have it all figured out. So not much has changed for Smith, whose comedies tend to reward jaded film lovers for recognizing how small the distant past now seems from the eternal present. Because we know how well the Mets did in their 1986 season, just like we know how good Brian David’s taste is when he bops along to Chaka Khan with his buddies or why he gawps at the (fake) trailers that play before their first movie, including an ad for a lovably sleazy thriller called “Sister Sugar Walls,” about a killer nun (Harley Quinn Smith) who moonlights as a prostitute. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore, even if they absolutely do.

There’s never really a doubt as to how Brian David’s story will go and some of the seemingly “personal” details of his early courtship with Melody aren’t as charming as Zajur and Agudong are together. Likewise, Smith goes a little too easy on his carbon-dated protagonists, not to mention the squirrelly, but never-that-funny Mike, Ken Jeong’s antagonistic movie theater manager. It probably says something that the funniest people in “The 4:30 Movie” are older male dropouts who either aren’t aware of or simply don’t care about whatever Brian’s up to. They talk about “Rocky IV” and pro-wrestling and then disappear into the chintzy haze of Smith’s snow globe memories.

The most embarrassing interactions in Smith’s new movie predictably involve women, whose stock characters are only appealing when performed by experienced and/or gifted comediennes. Smith attracts a couple here, but they can only do so much with such rubbery material. Smith’s jokes also tend to be overshadowed by painfully earnest and sometimes unbelievable interactions between his stand-in Brian David and a couple of intimidatingly smart and unfailingly ingratiating women, particularly Genesis Rodriguez’s John-Boorman-loving usherette and Melody, too.

It’s hard to fully embrace yet another Kevin Smith comedy where the cocky under-achiever gets permission to grow at some future date, including a pandering apology for Brian David’s klutziness with women (“The only place you can look short is how little you know about girls”). Still, you’ll ultimately either forgive or reject “The 4:30 Movie” based on how much you want to root for its younger cast members. Their earnest attempts at selling Smith’s hand-me-downs often outdistance whatever tired lines they’re handed (“You think today could ever be a movie?”). “The 4:30 Movie” isn’t exactly bad, it just requires a little more patience than you might be willing to commit to such a slight throwback.

3 Idiots

  • Two friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".
  • Rancho is an engineering student. His two friends. Farhan and Raju, Rancho sees the world in a different way. Rancho goes somewhere one day. And his friends find him. When Rancho is found, he has become one of a great scientist in the world. — Luv
  • 3 Idiots is a Bollywood production that flashes back and forth between present day, and the characters' time in college. It starts off with old friends, Qureshi and Raju Rastogi learning that their college pal, Rancho, had finally been found. The movie follows their travels to find their long lost friend, while flashing back to the events of their school years, where they often got into amusing shenanigans involving the Dean of Delhi's Imperial College of Engineering, Viru Sahastrabudhe, and dealt with some serious events that many people encounter in every day life. — adam
  • Farhan and Raju find from their biggest college rival Chatur that their missing friend Ranchoddas (Rancho) has been traced. The trio start their journey to find him where flashback revels Rancho,Raju and Farhan were engineering students and Rancho always believed that a person should be capable rather then being a bookworm and it will be way to success. He always got in tiff with Chatur and college director Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Virus) but fell in love with his daughter Pia.Things were going fine for them as they also cleared their first year exams in present day they reach house of Rancho where they find his father has passed away and the person who claims to be Rancho is someone else. — [email protected]
  • When the trio find out that where is rancho? They immediately rush to his house. But got shocked after seeing it's not the one who they are expecting it's someone else. The real Rancho. The trio threatened him to tell where is their friend. Finally they found rancho(Amir Khan). And he was living in a lakeside. Being a teacher. Pia runs to him and kissed him and confessed her love. And then then raju and faran also reach there. The hug each other. Then pia ask him his real name. He reply's "phunsukh wangdoo" the greatest scientist whom chatur is searching desperately. Chatur also reach there and he tells that he is the winner of the bet so he deserves the pen which given to Rancho by Virus. When he was about to go Rancho (phunsukh wangdoo) calls chatur and he realized that who is Rancho. So he except that he (Rancho) is the winner. After they lived happily ever after. " Study is not always about success or fame. It's about knowledge. " — gaherwarprerana
  • In the present day, Farhan receives a call from Chatur, saying that Ranchi is coming. Farhan is so excited that he fakes a heart attack to get off a flight and picks up Raju from his home (who forgets to wear his pants). Farhan and Raju meet Chatur at the water tower of their college ICE (Imperial College of Engineering), where Chatur informs them that he has found Rancho. Chatur taunts Farhan and Raju that now he has a mansion worth $3.5 million in the US, with a heated swimming pool, a maple wood floor living room and a Lamborghini for a car. Chatur reveals that Rancho is in Shimla. 10 years ago, Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) and his friends, Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Ranchodas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) are students at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in India. Man Mohan (Rahul Kumar) (MM) is the odd jobs boy at the college and is nicknamed Millimeter. Chatur was their classmate, who was born in Uganda and studied in Pondicherry. He doesn't understand Hindi very well. Rancho displays his presence of mind when he avoids ragging by electrocuting his senior, when he comes to urinate on his door. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer but is pursuing an engineering degree to fulfill his father's wish, whereas Raju needs to improve his family's financial situation (Raju also prays excessively to all known Gods to secure his good grades and a bright future), and Rancho studies for the pleasure of building machines. Rancho incurs the wrath of college's dean, Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe a.k.a. 'Virus' (Boman Irani), by giving creative and unorthodox answers in class. Virus espouses the competitive mentality of educational institutions and says that his son failed to get into ICE after 3 attempts. He is proud of an astronaut pen, developed by NASA, and given to him by his dean as a symbol of excellence. Virus was told to pass on the pen to the brilliant mind he encounters in his life. But Rancho asks why the astronauts not use a pencil. Rancho loved machines and constantly experimented with them. Joy Lobo was a fellow student who shared his passion for innovation. Virus threatens Joy that he will fail the course as he has not submitted his assignments on time. Joy says that he is creating Quad copter and is very close to solving the problem. Virus refuses to grant any leeway to Lobo. Rancho blames the rote-learning mentality of the institution for the suicide of Joy Lobo (Ali Fazal). Virus is blunt to Rancho and says that he lost his own son on a weekend and yet he delivered a lecture in the college on Monday. Livid with Rancho, Virus writes to Farhan and Raju's parents and informs them that they are not in good company with Rancho. Farhan's father Salim (Parikshit Sahni) tells Rancho about all the sacrifices he made to fund Farhan's engineering journey. Rancho realizes that Farhan is a great photographer, but is asked to leave when he suggests to Salim that Farhan should be a wildlife photographer. At Raju's house, his parents live in abject poverty and rely on Raju to pull them out of their mess. Virus's model student is Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya), called "Silencer" for his silent but malodorous farts. Virus wants Farhan and Raju to bunk in Chatur's room. Raju is swayed as he knows that he is the only hope for prosperity for his family. Rancho humiliates Chatur by replacing praise with an obscenity in the speech memorized by Chatur for delivery before the authorities on Teacher's Day. Chatur is humiliated and that night he challenges Rancho to meet 10 years later at the water tower to compare the outcome of their life. Meanwhile, Rancho falls in love with Virus's medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). Rancho meets Pia at her sister Mona's (Mona Singh) wedding. Pia is engaged to Suhas (Olivier Lafont) who is a very brand conscious individual. Rancho proves to Pia that Suhas has no interest in her and is only interested in marrying her for his own image. Raju realizes his mistake when Rancho brings his sick father to the hospital by borrowing Pia's scooter. The doctors agree that he would have died if Rancho had waited for an ambulance. Despite everything, Raju and Farhan are at the bottom of their class and Rancho tops it. In the class photo, Rancho bets Virus that his friends Farhan and Raju will land a job in the campus placements. The tensions escalate when the three friends break into Virus's house at night so Rancho can propose his own marriage to Pia (Kareena Kapoor). Virus hears the boys escaping but only finds Raju drunk in class. The next day, Virus threatens to expel Raju, who, unable to choose between betraying his friend and disappointing his family, attempts his own death. After extensive care by Pia and his friends, he awakes from a coma. Afterward, Farhan pursues photography by seeking an internship with a famous wildlife photographer in Hungary. Farhan goes home and convinces his father that he will be happier as a wildlife photographer. While Raju gives eccentric answers to an interview and refuses to compromise on his values. Both manage to get jobs despite Virus's challenge that no one will give them jobs. Virus vows to make the course's final exam as hard as possible so that Raju is unable to graduate. Pia, in reply, tells Rancho of the exam, and he and Farhan steal the examination's questions for Raju who refuses to cheat. Virus finds out that the 3 friends have stolen the papers & sentences them to expulsion. When Virus gets home, Pia confronts him that her brother also committed suicide due to Virus, as he wanted to be a writer and not an engineer. The boys earn a reprieve when Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labor. A heavy storm cuts electricity and the roads are flooded due to which Virus is not able to get Mona to the hospital. Pia instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college common room via Voice over IP, after Rancho restores power using car batteries and a power Inverter invented by Rancho. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it; wherefore Virus allows them to take and pass their final exams. Rancho comes first and is awarded Virus's prize pen, retained for an especially capable student. Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years afterward, in which Raju and Farhan are in search of Rancho. They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy businessman, looking to seal a deal with scientist Phunsukh Wangdu who has 400 patents under his name. At the house ascribed to Rancho in Shimla, they discover another individual (Jaaved Jaffrey) under that name (and whose photo was in the class picture instead of Rancho's), whom they blackmail by seizing his father's ashes and threatening to flush them down a toilet. Thus threatened, the householder reveals that their friend was an orphan servant boy who loved learning, while he himself disliked it, wherefore the family sent the servant to study in his master's place, until graduation, where-after the master pockets the qualifications and the benefits thereof, while the impersonator becomes a schoolteacher in Ladakh. Farhan decides to inform Pia and finds that Pia is getting married to Suhas. Raju and Farhan confront Pia and tell her that they know Rancho's location and convince her to come with them. Raju and Farhan then take Pia to Ladakh, where they see inventions resembling those of their friend. When the latter's friends ask his real name, he identifies himself as Phunsukh Wangdu, Chatur's prospective business partner. Upon learning this, Chatur is horrified and begs Phunsukh to establish the business relationship, apparently to no effect.
