Due to the modern civilization the growth of industry has been increased as thus the usage of energy has been raised. So ,every industry needs to implement power factor correction to limit power wastage and to avoid penalty due to the same. Lower power factor means that higher current is flowing through it, Higher current results in greater voltage drop. There are many methods to solve this problem so the aim of our project is to correct the power factor of a single phase electricity by switching capacitor. The utility that delivers the power to you will likely charge you if your power factor is to low.GSM module is used to alert the user about the power factor of loads and give the error indication in the system.

An intelligent power factor correction scheme is presented for three phase low power factor loads. This new scheme is able to perform individual phase sensing of parameters by monitoring at all times to sense a change in system parameters and affects individual phase correction by applying the exact amount of reactive components needed for each phase, and can also reduce negative sequence current caused by the load to improve system balance. An optimization criterion is used for the proper calculation of reactive power steps in a power compensation installation of capacitor banks. The criterion is enabled by sampling measurements performed on the electrical plant examined within specific interval of time.

Rapid increase of consumers in electronics devices and the use of mains rectification circuits inside these electronic devices is the root cause of mains harmonic distortion. Automatic power factor correction techniques can be applied to the industries, power systems and households to make them stable inturns increases the efficiency of system as well as the apparatus. This paper deals with the hardware design of active power factor correction circuit employing boost converter which is used to boost the DC voltages with a controller based on PID control strategy. The pulses given to power switches by pulse width modulation techniques generated by utilizing micro-controller board, Arduino thus obviating the need of complex hardware circuitry. MATLAB/SIMULINK was used to design and tune the PID controller parameters. The simulation results are matching with the predictions and the same was implemented as hardware. The waveforms various test points and across capacitors were obtained, ...

Power Factor Correction for Single Phase System with Real-Time Correction Device.

— This report addresses the Impact of Power Factor Correction Device on Residential Household Electrical System. The usage of power factor correction is an efficient way to improve power consumption and using power factor correction method to improve the power factor in a house to achieve near to unity which can avoid the consumer from experiencing power loss in the electrical appliances and also more efficient energy supplied to their electrical appliances.

— In recent years, the power quality of the AC system has become a huge desolation due to the rapidly increased numbers of inductive loads, electronic equipment, power electronics and high voltage power system. In order to reduce line losses and improve the transmission efficiency; power factor correction research has become a hot topic. Our paper gives new approach towards the solution of this problem.

In the present technological revolution power is very precious. So we need to find out the causes of power loss and improve the power system. Due to industrialization the use of inductive load increases and hence power system losses its efficiency. So we need to improve the power factor with a suitable method of automatic power factor correction. This study undertakes the design and simulation of an automatic power factor correction that is developed using arduino microcontroller ATmega328 Automatic power factor correction device reads power factor from line voltage and line current. This time values are then calibrated as phase angle and corresponding power factor. The display used was 4X16 liquid crystal display module. The motherboard calculates the compensation requirement and accordingly switches on different capacitor banks will run. This automatic power factor correction technique can be applied to the industries, power systems and also households to make them stable and due to that the system becomes stable and efficiency of the system as well as the apparatus increases. The use of microcontroller reduces the costs and the customers become beneficial according to the simulated output because the power factor of the specific selected industry is corrected from 0.66 to 0.92 improved value.

Power factor correction • It is very common that load (motors, power lines, etc) is inductive, i.e. Q>0. • Common practice to bring the power factor to unity is to connect a parallel capacitor across the load, such that QC=-Q. (the method is easy and need not break the circuit).

Example 7.8, P345: power factor correction In theory, the power factor can be corrected to unity by putting a capacitor in series with the load. However, it is found (ex. 7.9) that this configuration will result in significant increase in the current, and thus increase the power required by the generator.

Electrical Consumption: why is ac important • Consider a city such as Newark, DE. Assume that 30,000 citizens wish to dry their hair at the same time; that would require approximately 50 MW (30,000 x 1500W = 45,000,000 W). (The actual Delmarva Power Fall 1995 figure was a peak demand of 2500 MW for 400,000 customers, yielding an average of more than 6000 W per user.) • At 120 V, this power would require a current of I = P / V = 50,000 kW / 120 V = 400 kA. A 10-gauge wire (5 mm2 cross-sectional area) can handle 30 A before overheating -- thus more than 13,000 such wires would be required or a wire of diameter 15 cm, both physically unreasonable! • To deliver a particular amount of power, the current may be decreased by increasing the voltage, since P = I V. For example, boosting the voltage to 80 kV results in a current of (50,000kW)/(80kV)=600 A, a much more manageable value. The ratio of currents between 80 kV and 120 V is 670 -- the energy lost in the transmission lines would be that ratio squared, approximately one-half million, since the power dissipated by the transmission lines is proportional to the current squared. • If a device exists that can raise or lower voltages while maintaining power, with very little loss of energy, then power can be transferred over greater distances with less loss. Electric power stations can thus be situated further from residential areas. Such a voltage conversion is difficult with dc; however, the conversion from one ac voltage to another is straightforward when the electrical component known as a transformer is used.

Transformer Transformation of Voltage: Transformers may also be used to transform impedances; e.g. coupling the output of a stereo amplifier (Rout ~ 1 kohm) to a speaker of 4 or 8 ohm impedance for maximum power transfer. Refer to pg. 794 of HRW for impedance matching applications. Transformation of Resistance:
