  • Trivia Nine weeks before filming began, Lionel Logue's grandson, Mark Logue , discovered a large box in his attic that contained his grandfather's personal papers. The box held Lionel Logue's diary, his appointment book, notes from his speech therapy sessions with King George VI , and over 100 personal letters to Logue from the King. It also contained what is believed to be the actual copy of the speech used by George VI in his 1939 radio broadcast announcing the declaration of war with Germany. Mark Logue turned his grandfather's papers, letters, and diary over to director Tom Hooper and screenwriter David Seidler , who used them to flesh out the relationship between Logue and the King. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth also read through the material for insight into their characters. The exchange in this movie between Logue and King George VI following his radio speech ("You still stammered on the 'W'." / "Well, I had to throw in a few so they knew it was me.") was taken directly from Logue's diary. Firth insisted that it should be included in the movie.
  • Goofs In the final speech, King George VI has one blue eye and one brown eye. Colin Firth had lost a contact lens.

King George VI : All that... work... down the drain. My own... b... brother, I couldn't say a single w-word to him in reply.

Lionel Logue : Why do you stammer so much more with David than you ever do with me?

King George VI : 'Cos you're b... bloody well paid to listen.

Lionel Logue : Bertie, I'm not a geisha girl.

King George VI : Stop trying to be so bloody clever.

Lionel Logue : What is it about David that stops you speaking?

King George VI : What is it about you that bloody well makes you want to go on about it the whole bloody time?

Lionel Logue : Vulgar, but fluent; you don't stammer when you swear.

King George VI : Oh, bugger off!

Lionel Logue : Is that the best you can do?

King George VI : [like an elocution lesson] Well... bloody bugger to you, you beastly bastard.

Lionel Logue : Oh, a public school prig could do better than that.

King George VI : Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!

Lionel Logue : Yes!

King George VI : Shit!

Lionel Logue : Defecation flows trippingly from the tongue!

King George VI : Because I'm angry!

Lionel Logue : Do you know the f-word?

King George VI : F... f... fornication?

Lionel Logue : Oh, Bertie.

King George VI : Fuck. Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck and fuck! Fuck, fuck and bugger! Bugger, bugger, buggerty buggerty buggerty, fuck, fuck, arse!

Lionel Logue : Yes...

King George VI : Balls, balls...

Lionel Logue : ...you see, not a hesitation!

King George VI : ...fuckity, shit, shit, fuck and willy. Willy, shit and fuck and... tits.

  • New York Post Lou Lumenick The King's Speech is the rare work of art that's also an immense crowdpleaser.
  • AV Club Tasha Robinson The King's Speech is admirably free of easy answers and simple, happy endings; it's a skewed, awards-ready version of history, but one polished to a fine, satisfying shine.
  • Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum The King's Speech is simultaneously cozy and majestic.
  • San Diego Reader David Elliott The film is richly rooted, with splendid trappings, including pea-soup fogs. For all the pomp and protocol, it's an intimate story about a scared man who must find his voice if he is to rise, in regal stature, above his epaulets.
  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch Joe Williams The King's Speech is the epitome of prestige cinema, an impeccably crafted and emotionally compelling drama that deserves the many laurels it surely will receive.

Product Description

After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. Based on the true story of King George VI, "The King's Speech" follows the Royal Monarch's quest to find his voice.

Candidates for president and prime minister choose to run, but kings rarely have a choice. Such was the case for Prince Albert, known by family members as Bertie (Colin Firth), whose stutter made public speaking difficult. Upon the death of his father, George V (Michael Gambon, making the most of a small part), the crown went to Bertie's brother, Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), who abdicated to marry divorcée Wallis Simpson. All the while, Bertie and his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter, excellent), try to find a solution to his stammer. Nothing works until they meet Australian émigré Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a failed actor operating out of a threadbare office. He believes Bertie's problem stems from emotional rather than physiological issues, leading to a clash of wills that allows the Oscar®-winning Rush ( Shine ) and the Oscar-nominated Firth ( A Single Man ) to do some of their best work (in a neat bit of casting, Firth's Pride and Prejudice costar, Jennifer Ehle, plays Logue's wife). All their efforts, from the tense to the comic--Bertie doesn't stutter when he swears--lead to the speech King George VI must make to the British public on the eve of World War II. At a time when his country needs him the most, he can't afford to fail. As Stephen Frears did in The Queen , Tom Hooper (HBO's Elizabeth I ) lends vulnerability to a royal figure, showing how isolating that life can be--and how much difference a no-nonsense friend like Logue can make. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Swifties for Kamala Rally Raises Over $100,000 in Donations With Carole King Rapping ‘Shake It Off’ and Elizabeth Warren Praising ‘Karma’

The coalition, which has no official ties to the pop star, fundraised for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign during its virtual rally.

swifties for kamala

While Taylor Swift has yet to endorse a presidential candidate, her fervent fanbase is already mobilizing for one. The Swifties for Kamala coalition officially launched Tuesday afternoon with a virtual rally that saw a lineup of guest speakers — including Carole King and senator Elizabeth Warren , among others — making Swift-related references and puns.

King provided the call with advice for volunteering, namely door knocking and phone banking, encouraging an estimated 27,000 viewers to support Harris and Tim Walz. “I’ve been a political activist for years. I’ve been a volunteer, I’ve been a door knocker, even as a famous person,” she added. “I’m telling you all this because if any of you are thinking of volunteering to be door knockers or phone callers, but you’re a little nervous about what you might say, please believe me: there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

Each guest speaker was instructed to share their favorite song from Swift before sharing their political messages. Warren, the first guest speaker for the event, kicked off the call by claiming “Karma” and “All Too Well (10-Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” as her favorite songs. She also called out the battle against Ticketmaster , and summoned the “Era of the First Woman President,” as viewers on the “Swifties for Kamala” Discord chat praised Warren’s efforts and donated to Harris’ campaign (an estimated $1 1 4 ,000 was raised at the time of this article’s publication).

Other featured guests included senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Ed Markey (who, in a speech about climate change, tied in references of Swift’s Lana Del Rey-featuring “Snow on the Beach”); Rep. Chris Deluzio and Rep. Becca Balint; North Carolina Democratic Party chair Anderson Clayton; and Swifties for Kamala team members Irene Kim, Emerald Medrano, Annie Wu Henry, April Glick Pulito, Emma Coleman and Lexa Hayes.

The Swifties for Kamala launched after President Biden ended his campaign in July, as the Democratic Party leadership was quickly beginning to coalesce behind Harris as the new presumptive nominee. While Swift has yet to publicly voice support for either Harris or Trump, the pop star did endorse the Biden-Harris ticket ahead of the 2020 election.

“We are not waiting on Taylor to show her support for Kamala Harris ,” Swifties for Harris social media manager Rohan Reagan told Cosmopolitan in an interview earlier in August. “We are doing this outside of her, using the platform of Swifties as a way to get people involved in the election. Taylor did throw her support toward Joe Biden during the 2020 election, so it is possible that she’ll show her support again. But Swifties for Kamala aren’t waiting for her to do that.”

Earlier in August, Donald Trump posted a series of images on his platform Truth Social that claimed that Swift had endorsed his candidacy. Two of the photographs were confirmed to be real, taken by the same Swiftie. However, many appeared to be AI-generated images of women wearing “Swifties for Trump” shirts. One screenshot was nabbed from a satirical article. Trump captioned the post: “I accept!”

'Democrats are as patriotic as us:' Adam Kinzinger sends conservatives message at DNC

Former Republican U.S. Representative from Illinois Adam Kinzinger spoke at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night, calling Democrats as patriotic as conservatives.

Kinzinger is a conservative who sat on House committee that investigated Donald Trump 's role in the Jan. 6, 2021 riots . In a Democratic fundraising text sent Thursday, Kinzinger said he refuses to support Trump's "cult of personality." He had endorsed President Joe Biden before the June 27 debate.

In his convention address, Kinzinger said the Republican party is no longer conservative as it follows Trump. He also called Trump weak, small and faithless.

Thursday is the final night of the convention, when Presidential nominee Kamala Harris will formally accept the party's nomination.
