There is a saying that explains that one can only get true happiness when one comes to the realisation that only one can make himself/herself happy. We can only find true happiness within ourselves and we can’t find it in other people. This saying and its meaning is always hammered on in different places but we still refuse to fully understand it and put it into good use. It is very important that we understand that happiness is nothing more than the state of a person’s mind. Happiness cannot come from all the physical things we see around us. Only we through our positive emotions that we can get through good thoughts have the ability to create true happiness.

Our emotions are created by our thoughts. Therefore, it is very important that we work on having only positive thoughts and this can be achieved when we see life in a positive light.

Giving too much importance to the other and not receiving anything back from them makes a person disappointed and happiness gets lost.

2. Have some Initiative:

You can make the plan of traveling outside yourself. Don’t wait for your parent, partner or kid to take you outside. You can ask them to come along with you if they want. But, if they decline your offer then, don’t get discouraged and carry on your trip plan along with full happiness.

3. Provide some Space:

It is necessary to provide some amount of space to every individual and spend some time with oneself. It helps in creating happiness.

It does not matter that whether you are a working expert, a schoolchild, a retired person or a housewife, happiness is necessary for everybody to live a good and happy life. Since these questions have troubled us there have been many who sought to answer them and by doing so, they formed philosophies and religions. The search for earthly happiness will make many do incredible deeds but if this energy is used in the wrong way it can cause great suffering. How can we know which recipe for happiness is the best one and what we should devote our time and attention to? The trick is, there is no right answer and as the first sentence of this essay states, there is no way to be happy because being happy is the way. That’s how I got my head around this problem, let me explain some more.

Source of Suffering:

At the expense of sounding Buddhist, when you think about most of the things that make us unhappy are material in nature. They are the things that we really do not need but they make us feel happy. This notion is not just something the wise man from the 6 th century BC India expressed but many more have said this before and after him. Socrates and Jesus to name just a few.

What I find interesting in the struggle for happiness is the paradox present in the instructions to reach it. One has a  thought all through life to be good and hard working so he can get the things he wants and needs later on in life but then as you start to struggle for the money you realize that your life is turning into a money grabbing game. So, the source of happiness and stability becomes the source of all your anxiety and aggression. Naturally, we can see how some people thought that all material things stand on the path to our happiness.

But what about the immaterial, what if you are in love with someone you are not supposed to love? The above instruction would tell you to surrender your heart’s desire and you will be free from constraints. Is this happiness? Or is it the struggle to do and achieve the impossible the real source of happiness?

People often forget that they are animals and like all of them they have a logic to their nature and their own specific needs. Like all the other animal’s people are caught in the struggle for existence and sometimes surviving the day can be a real ordeal if you get caught in the wrong circumstances. Men has made himself safe from most of the things that could have harmed him in nature but in doing so he forgot what he has made.

Think about the present from a historical perspective. Even a hundred years ago most people lost up to 80% of all their children to diseases, clean water was a rarity for most of our existence, and people actually had to labor to make food and to have enough to feed their family all through the year. The fact is we have a lot to be grateful for in the present age and the fact that some of us are unhappy because we do not have all our heart’s desires is just a symptom of collective infancy. Having all of your loved ones around you, with a roof to shelter under and with lots of delicious food is the only source of happiness man needs everything else should just be a bonus.

Happiness cannot be found by rejecting everything that is material or by earning more money then you can spend. The trick is to find balance by looking at yourself and the lives of people around you and by understanding that there is a lot to be grateful for, the trick is to stop searching for a path and to understand that we are already walking on one. As long as we are making any type of list of the prerequisite for our life of happiness, we will end up unsatisfied because life does not grant wishes we are the ones that make them come true. Often the biggest change in our lives comes from a simple change of perspective rather than from anything we can own.

Happiness is a personal decision that is influenced by choices made. There is a common phrase on happiness; “happiness is a choice” which is very true because people choose if they want to be happy or not. Happiness is caused by circumstances and people have the liberty to choose those circumstance and get away from those that make them unhappy.

Happiness is also achieved through the kind of support system that an individual has. Having a family or friends that are supportive will enable the achievement of happiness. Communicating and interacting with the outside world is important.

Factors Affecting Happiness:

Sleep patterns influence the state of mind thus influence happiness. Having enough sleep always leads to happy mornings and a good state of mind for rest of the day. Sleep that is adequate also affects the appearance of a person. There is satisfaction that comes with having enough sleep. Enough rest increases performance and productivity of an individual and thus more successes and achievements are realized and happiness is experienced.

Another factor affecting happiness is the support network of an individual. A strong support network of family and friends results in more happiness. Establishing good relationships with neighbors, friends and family through regular interactions brings more happiness to an individual. With support network, the incidences of stressful moments will be reduced because your family and friends will always be of help.

Sexual satisfaction has been established to affect happiness. It is not just about getting the right partner anymore. It is about having a partner that will satisfy you sexually. There is a relationship between sex and happiness because of the hormones secreted during sexual intercourse. The hormone is called oxytocin and responsible for the happiness due to sexual satisfaction. Satisfaction also strengthens the relationships between the partners and that creates happiness.

Wealth also plays a significant role in happiness. There is a common phrase that is against money and happiness: “money cannot buy happiness” is this true? Personally, I believe that being financially stable contributes to happiness because you will always have peace of mind and many achievements. Peace of mind is possible for wealthy people because they do not have stressors here and then compared to poor people. Also, when a person is wealthy, they can afford to engage in luxurious activities that relaxes the mind and create happiness. For a person to be wealthy, they will have had many achievements in life. These achievement make them happy.

A good state of health is an important factor that influences the happiness of individuals. A healthy person will be happy because there are no worries of diseases or pain that they are experiencing. When a person is healthy, their state of mind is at peace because they are not afraid of death or any other health concerns. Not only the health of individuals is important, but also the health of the support system of the person. Friends and family’s state of health will always have an impact on what we feel as individuals because we care about them and we get worried whenever they are having bad health.

Communication and interactions are important in relation to an individual’s happiness. Having a support system is not enough because people need to communicate and interact freely. Whenever there are interactions like a social gathering where people talk and eat together, more happiness is experienced. This concept is witnessed in parties because people are always laughing and smiling in parties whenever they are with friends.

Communication is key to happiness because it helps in problem solving and relieving stressors in life. Sharing experiences with a support system creates a state of wellbeing after the solution is sought. Sometime when I am sad, I take my phone and call a friend or a family member and by the time the phone call is over, I always feel better and relieved of my worries.

Happiness is an important emotion that influences how we live and feel on a daily basis. Happiness is achieved in simple ways. People have the liberty to choose happiness because we are not bound by any circumstances for life. Factors that influence happiness are those that contribute to emotional wellbeing. Physical wellbeing also affects happiness. Every individual finds happiness in their own because they know what makes them happy and what doesn’t.

What is happiness? We can ask hundreds of people, and each of them would probably give different answers. One would say that happiness is to be with a loved one, the second would say that happiness is the stability, and the third, on the contrary, would say that happiness is the unpredictability. For someone, to be happy is to have a lot of money while for others – to be popular. All in all, there are plenty of different understandings of happiness.

Personally, I consider happiness as simplicity and peace when my family and friends are healthy and happy as well. I recognize that they all are dear to me and able to understand what is going on inside me. I know that they will support me in any situation doing everything that depends on them. In return, I am also ready to do much for them. What we do for others, helping them when they need our help, advice, or support and obtaining appreciation, is happiness because helping others, we are doing something very significant and necessary.

What does it mean to be happy? I think it is, primarily, a state of mind, it means to have harmony with yourself and the people around. Happiness is multi-faceted. Perhaps, the word “love” is the most appropriate one to describe my happiness as love is driven by our world. People create wonderful things concerning their job, hobby, or family. Love is life, and I am happy when I realize that I live up to the hilt.

However, some people might be unhappy even though they should be. For example, teenagers who have everything to live a happy life, including healthy family, close friends, and enough money to satisfy basic needs, ask their parents to buy the latest model of IPhone. In the case, parents could not afford it, some teenagers tend to feel unhappy. After all, one can be a successful leader and have millions as well as prestige, but do not have a loving family and emotional harmony.

In my opinion, material values are not a true measure of happiness. Happiness is the ability to be optimistic in spite of difficulties and the ability to overcome them successfully. Finally, challenges should be taken as the lessons that life presents us. Even the negative things teach something, give a new experience, or refer to the correct direction.

I believe that happiness is not a gift and not a given right as every person has its own happiness inside. Moreover, it is never too late to become happy. We can inspire and motivate ourselves and others to be happy. A stranger’s passing smile, warm rays of the sun penetrating the window, or a cup of freshly brewed coffee – happiness is in detail. Everyone chooses and prefers different sources. It is of great importance for people to enjoy moments of life, even the most insignificant ones.

We need to appreciate every moment in our lives remembering that happiness is within us. After all, time passes, and we are getting hurt by the fact that we did not appreciate the time when we had a chance. Therefore, living in peace and harmony with others, helping those who need your help, and avoiding things that you would regret about in future are paramount ways to find happiness and make others happy.

Do you want to be happy? If you’re like most people, then yes, you do.

But what is happiness? What does it mean to be “happy”? [1]

This essay discusses four major philosophical theories of happiness. [2]

1. Hedonism

According to hedonism, happiness is simply the experience of pleasure. [3] A happy person has a lot more pleasure than displeasure (pain) in her life. To be happy, then, is just to feel good. In other words, there’s no difference between being happy and feeling happy.

Famous hedonists include the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus and the modern English philosophers Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. [4] These philosophers all took happiness to include intellectual pleasures (such as reading a book) in addition to physical pleasures (such as having sex).

Although we associate being happy with feeling good, many philosophers think that hedonism is mistaken.

First, it’s possible to be happy without feeling good (such as when a happy person has a toothache), and it’s also possible to feel good without being happy (such as when an unhappy person gets a massage). Since happiness and pleasure can come apart, they can’t be the same thing.

Second, happiness and pleasure seem to have different properties. Pleasures are often fleeting, simple, and superficial (think of the pleasure involved in eating ice cream), whereas happiness is supposed to be lasting, complex, and profound. Things with different properties can’t be identical, so happiness can’t be the same thing as pleasure.

These arguments suggest that happiness and pleasure aren’t identical. That being said, it’s hard to imagine a happy person who never feels good. So, perhaps happiness involves pleasure without being identical to it.

2. Virtue Theory

According to virtue theory, happiness is the result of cultivating the virtues—both moral and intellectual—such as wisdom, courage, temperance, and patience. A happy person must be sufficiently virtuous. To be happy, then, is to cultivate excellence and to flourish as a result. This view is famously held by Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics. [5]

Linking happiness to virtue has the advantage of treating happiness as a lasting, complex, and profound phenomenon. It also explains how happiness and pleasure can come apart, since a person can be virtuous without feeling good, and a person can feel good without being virtuous.

In spite of these advantages, however, virtue theory is questionable. An important part of being virtuous is being morally good. But are immoral people always unhappy? Arguably not. Many bad people seem happy in spite of—or even because of—their unsavory actions. And a similar point can be made about intellectual virtue: unwise or irrational people aren’t always unhappy, either. In fact, some of these people seem happy as a direct result of their intellectual deficiencies. “Ignorance is bliss,” the saying goes!

But virtue theorists have a response here. Maybe some immoral people seem happy, on the surface; but that doesn’t mean that they are truly happy, at some deeper level. And the same thing can be said about people who lack the intellectual virtues: ignorance may lead to bliss, but that bliss isn’t true happiness. So, there seems to be some room for debate on these issues.

3. Desire Satisfaction Theory

According to the desire satisfaction theory, happiness consists in getting what you want—whatever that happens to be. A happy person has many of her desires satisfied; and the more her desires are satisfied, the happier she is.

Even though getting what you want can be a source of happiness, identifying happiness with desire satisfaction is problematic.

To start, this implies that the only way to become happier is by satisfying a desire. This seems wrong. Sometimes our happiness is increased by getting something we didn’t previously want—such as a surprise birthday party or getting stuck taking care of a neighbor’s cat. This implies that desire satisfaction is not necessary for happiness.

Desire satisfaction is not always sufficient for happiness, either. Unfortunately, it is common for people to feel disappointed when they get what they want. Many accomplishments, such as earning a degree or winning a tournament, simply don’t bring the long-lasting happiness that we expect. [6]

So, even if getting what we want sometimes makes us happy, these counterexamples suggest that happiness does not consist in desire satisfaction. [7]

4. Life Satisfaction Theory

According to the life satisfaction theory, happiness consists in being satisfied with your life. A happy person has a positive impression of her life in general, even though she might not be happy about every single aspect of it. To be happy, then, means to be content with your life as a whole.

It’s controversial whether life satisfaction is affective (a feeling) or cognitive (a belief). On the one hand, life satisfaction certainly comes with positive feelings. On the other hand, it’s possible to step back, reflect on your life, and realize that it’s good, even when you’re feeling down. [8]  

One problem for this theory is that it’s difficult for people to distinguish how they feel in the moment from how they feel about their lives overall. Studies have shown that people report feeling more satisfied with their lives when the weather is good, even though this shouldn’t make that much of a difference. But measuring life satisfaction is complicated, so perhaps such studies should be taken with a grain of salt. [9]

5. Conclusion

Understanding what happiness is should enable you to become happier.

First, decide which theory of happiness you think is true, based on the arguments.

Second, pursue whatever happiness is according to that theory: seek pleasure and try to avoid pain (hedonism), cultivate moral and intellectual virtue (virtue theory), decide what you really want and do your best to get it (desire satisfaction theory), or change your life (or your attitude about it) so you feel (or believe) that it’s going well (life satisfaction theory).

And if you’re not sure which theory of happiness is true, then you could always try pursuing all of these things. 😊

[1] This might seem like an empirical (scientific) question rather than a philosophical one. However, this essay asks the conceptual question of what happiness is, and conceptual questions belong to philosophy, not to science.

First, let’s take a look at the definition of happiness so we’re all on the same page.  Oxford English Dictionary ’s definition of “happiness” is a simple one: “ The state of being happy .”

Not exactly what we were looking for, was it? Perhaps we need to dive a little deeper.  Oxford English Dictionary ’s definition of “happy” is a little more helpful: “ Feeling or showing pleasure or contentment .”

That’s better! So, happiness is the state of feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. From this definition, we can glean a few important points about happiness:

  • Happiness is a state, not a trait; in other words, it isn’t a long-lasting, permanent feature or personality trait, but a more fleeting, changeable state.
  • Happiness is equated with feeling pleasure or contentment, meaning that happiness is not to be confused with joy, ecstasy, bliss, or other more intense feelings.
  • Happiness can be either feeling or showing, meaning that happiness is not necessarily an internal or external experience, but can be both.

The meaning of happiness in Positive Psychology really depends on who you ask.

Happiness is often known by another name in positive psychology research: subjective wellbeing, or SWB.

Some believe happiness is one of the core components of SWB, while others believe happiness is SWB. Regardless, you’ll frequently find SWB used as a shorthand for happiness in the literature.

And speaking of the literature, you will find references to SWB everywhere. A quick Google search for the word “happiness” offers over 2 million results (as of January 6th, 2019). Further, a scan for the same term in two of psychology’s biggest online databases (PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES) returns 19,139 results from academic and other journals, books, dissertations, and more.

Is it difficult to define scientifically?

With so many takes on happiness, it’s no wonder that happiness is a little difficult to define scientifically; there is certainly disagreement about what, exactly, happiness is.

According to researchers Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, and their colleagues (2005), there are three main ways that happiness has been approached in positive psychology:

  • Happiness as a global assessment of life and all its facets;
  • Happiness as a recollection of past emotional experiences;
  • Happiness as an aggregation of multiple emotional reactions across time (Kim-Prieto, Diener, Tamir, Scollon, & Diener, 2005).

Although they generally all agree on what happiness feels like—being satisfied with life, in a good mood, feeling positive emotions , feeling enjoyment, etc.—researchers have found it difficult to agree on the scope of happiness.

However, for our purposes in this piece, it’s enough to work off of a basic definition that melds the OED ‘s definition with that of positive psychologists: happiness is a state characterized by contentment and general satisfaction with one’s current situation.

Pleasure vs. happiness

Couples and Happiness as a Social Component.

The association between the two makes sense, and it’s common to hear the two words used interchangeably outside of the literature; however, when it comes to the science of positive psychology, it is important to make a distinction between the two.

Happiness, as we described above, is a state characterized by feelings of contentment and satisfaction with one’s life or current situation. On the other hand, pleasure is a more visceral, in-the-moment experience. It often refers to the sensory-based feelings we get from experiences like eating good food, getting a massage, receiving a compliment, or having sex.

Happiness , while not a permanent state, is a more stable state than pleasure. Happiness generally sticks around for longer than a few moments at a time, whereas pleasure can come and go in seconds (Paul, 2015).

Pleasure can contribute to happiness, and happiness can enhance or deepen feelings of pleasure, but the two can also be completely mutually exclusive. For example, you can feel a sense of happiness based on meaning and engagement that has nothing to do with pleasure, or you could feel pleasure but also struggle with guilt because of it, keeping you from feeling happy at the same time.

Happiness vs. meaning

Happiness and meaning have an even more distinct line between the two. Rarely are happiness and meaning confused or used interchangeably, and for good reason—they describe two very different experiences.

Humans may resemble many other creatures in their striving for happiness, but the quest for meaning is a key part of what makes us human, and uniquely so.

Roy Baumeister et al. (2013)

Unlike happiness, meaning is not a fleeting state that drifts throughout the day; it’s a more comprehensive sense of purpose and feeling of contributing to something greater than yourself.

As the quote from Baumeister and colleagues (2013) suggests, there are important distinctions between the methods of searching for and the benefits of experiencing happiness and meaning. Scott Barry Kaufman at Scientific American (2016) outlines these distinctions that Baumeister and his fellow researchers found between the two:

  • Finding one’s life easy or difficult was related to happiness, but not meaning;
  • Feeling healthy was related to happiness, but not meaning;
  • Feeling good was related to happiness, not meaning;
  • Scarcity of money reduced happiness more than meaning;
  • People with more meaningful lives agreed that “relationships are more important than achievements;”
  • Helping people in need was linked to meaning but not happiness;
  • Expecting to do a lot of deep thinking was positively related to meaningfulness, but negatively with happiness;
  • Happiness was related more to being a taker rather than a giver, whereas meaning was related more to being a giver than a taker;
  • The more people felt their activities were consistent with the core themes and values of their self, the greater meaning they reported in their activities;
  • Seeing oneself as wise, creative, and even anxious were all linked to meaning but had no relationship (and in some cases, even showed a negative relationship) to happiness (Kaufman, 2016).

Basically, although the two overlaps and each can contribute to the experience of the other, the two can be mutually exclusive (Baumeister et al., 2013).

The origins and etymology of happiness (Incl. root words)

According to Etymology Online  (n.d.), the word for “happy” in most languages came from the word for “lucky.” This suggests an interesting trend—perhaps our ancestors believed that happiness was largely a by-product of luck?

It also points to a possible difference of general opinion between earlier generations and our own 20th and 21st-century generations: that happiness was not a vital factor in a good life, but essentially a bonus that some lucky individuals got to experience.

Here’s what author Darrin McMahon writes about the origins and root words of the word “happiness:”

“It is a striking fact that in every Indo-European language, without exception, going all the way back to ancient Greek, the word for happiness is a cognate with the word for luck. Hap is the Old Norse and Old English root of happiness, and it just means luck or chance, as did the Old French heur, giving us bonheur, good fortune or happiness. German gives us the word Gluck, which to this day means both happiness and chance.”

(McMahon, 2006)

What does self-happiness mean?

Although the term is not used very often, “self-happiness” refers to a sense of happiness or satisfaction with one’s self. It is often associated with self-confidence, self-esteem, and other concepts that marry “the self” with feeling content and happy.

In general, it means that you are pleased with yourself and your choices, and with the person that you are.

Happiness can be defined as an enduring state of mind consisting not only of feelings of joy, contentment, and other positive emotions, but also of a sense that one’s life is meaningful and valued (Lyubomirsky, 2001).

Happiness energizes us and is a highly sought after state of being. But, what components make up happiness?

Martin Seligman (2002) argued that happiness has three dimensions that can be cultivated:  

  • The regular experience of pleasantness (the pleasant life)
  • The frequent engagement in satisfying activities (the engaged life)
  • The experience of a sense of connectedness to a greater whole (the meaningful life)

Although each dimension is important, the happiest people tend to be those who pursue the full life— they infuse their life with pleasure, engagement, and meaning (Seligman et al., 2005).

Building on Seligman’s three dimensions of happiness, Sirgy and Wu (2009) added the balanced life dimension.

According to these authors, balance in life is another key factor contributing to happiness because the amount of satisfaction derived from a single life domain is limited. One needs to be involved in multiple domains to satisfy the broad spectrum of human needs. As a result, cultivating a sense of balance is crucial for juggling these life domains.

Now that we know what happiness is, let’s dive a little deeper. What does psychology have to tell us about happiness?

There are many different theories of happiness, but they generally fall into one of two categories based on how they conceptualize happiness (or well-being):

  • Hedonic happiness/well-being is happiness conceptualized as experiencing more pleasure and less pain; it is composed of an affective component (high positive affect and low negative affect) and a cognitive component (satisfaction with one’s life);
  • Eudaimonic happiness/well-being conceptualizes happiness as the result of the pursuit and attainment of life purpose, meaning, challenge, and personal growth; happiness is based on reaching one’s full potential and operating at full functioning (AIPC, 2011).

Some theories see happiness as a by-product of other, more important pursuits in life, while others see happiness as the end-goal for humans. Some theories state that pursuing happiness is pointless (although pursuing other important experiences and feelings may contribute to greater happiness), and some assume that happiness can be purposefully increased or enhanced.

Although they differ on the specifics, these theories generally agree on a few points:

  • It’s good to be happy, and people like being happy;
  • Happiness is neither a totally fleeting, momentary experience nor a stable, long-term trait;
  • At least some portion of our happiness is set by our genetics, but the amount varies from about 10% up to 50%;
  • The pursuit and attainment of pleasure will rarely lead to happiness;
  • There are many sources that contribute to or compose happiness (AIPC, 2011).

What sources create true personal happiness?

Taking together all the various theories and findings on happiness, we know that there are at least a few factors that are very important for overall happiness:

  • Individual income;
  • Labor market status;
  • Physical health;
  • Social relationships;
  • Moral values;
  • Experience of positive emotions (AIPC, 2011).

All of these factors can contribute to a happy life, but research has found that good relationships are a vital ingredient (Waldinger & Schulz, 2010).

When we are happy in our most important relationships (usually our spouse or significant other, our children and/or our parents, other close family members, and our closest friends), we tend to be happier.

We have some control over how our relationships go, so that leads us to an interesting and important question: can we increase our own happiness?

Can individuals learn how to be happy?

The answer from numerous studies is a resounding YES—you CAN learn how to be happier.

The degree to which you can increase your happiness will vary widely by which theory you subscribe to, but there are no credible theories that allow absolutely no room for individual improvement. To improve your overall happiness, the most effective method is to look at the list of sources above and work on enhancing the quality of your experiences in each one of them.

For example, you can work on getting a higher salary (although a higher salary will only work up to about $75,000 USD a year), improve your health , work on developing and maintaining high-quality relationships, and overall, find ways to incorporate more positive feelings into your daily life. This does assume basic access to safety as well as social equality.

What happiness looks like

Of course, what it looks like will depend on the individual—a happy life for one person may be another’s nightmare!

However, there are a few examples that can display a wide range of lives that can be conducive to happiness:

  • A woman who lives alone, has excellent relationships with her nieces and nephews, gives to charity, and finds meaning in her work;
  • A man who is happily married with three healthy children and a relatively low-paying job;
  • A widow who enjoys regular visits with her children and grandchildren, along with volunteering for local charities;
  • A cancer patient who has a wonderful support system and finds meaning in helping others make it through chemotherapy;
  • A social worker who works 70-hour weeks with no overtime pay, to ensure the children on her caseload are in good hands;
  • An unmarried man in a monastery who has no earthly possessions and no salary to speak of, but finds meaning in communing with his god;
  • A teenager in a foster home who has several close friends and enjoys playing football on his school’s team;
  • A man who lives with several pets, enjoys a high salary, and loves his job.

Each of these was pulled from real-world examples of people who are happy. They may not seem like they have it all, but they all have at least one of the ingredients from the list of sources mentioned earlier. We don’t need to have everything we want in order to be happy—true happiness can be obtained by finding joy in what we already have, however much or little that may seem.

What are some visions you associate with happiness? Are there any similarities with these dreams?

You might be wondering why happiness is considered such an important aspect of life, as there are many components of a meaningful life.

In some ways, science would agree with you. It appears that  life satisfaction , meaning, and well-being can be linked with happiness, but happiness is not necessarily the overarching goal for everyone in life. It is still important because it has some undeniably positive benefits and co-occurring factors.

June Silny at Happify outlines 14 answers to the question, “ What’s so great about happiness, anyway? ”

  • Happy people are more successful in multiple life domains, including marriage, friendship, income, work performance, and health.
  • Happy people get sick less often and experience fewer symptoms when they do get sick.
  • Happy people have more friends and a better support system.
  • Happy people donate more to charity (and giving money to charity makes you happy, too).
  • Happy people are more helpful and more likely to volunteer—which also makes you happier!
  • Happy people have an easier time navigating through life since optimism eases pain, sadness, and grief.
  • Happy people have a positive influence on others and encourage them to seek happiness as well, which can act as reinforcement.
  • Happy people engage in deeper and more meaningful conversations.
  • Happy people smile more, which is beneficial to your health.
  • Happy people exercise more often and eat more healthily.
  • Happy people are happy with what they have rather than being jealous of others.
  • Happy people are healthier all around and more likely to be healthy in the future.
  • Happy people live longer than those who are not as happy.
  • Happy people are more productive and more creative, and this effect extends to all those experiencing positive emotions.

The relationship between mental health and happiness

As you can probably assume from the list above, there is a strong relationship between mental health and happiness! When happy people are healthier, have better relationships, make friends more easily, and find more success in life, it’s easy to see why happiness and mental health are related.

The sources that contribute to happiness are the same as those that provide people with a buffer or protection against mental illness, which explains the close relationship between the two.

A recent study explored the association between happiness and mental health in college students and found that a relatively strong, positive correlation connects the two factors (Shafiq, Nas, Ansar, Nasrulla, Bushra, & Imam, 2015). This correlation held, even when gender and socio-demographic variables were added to the mix.

The close tie between mental health and happiness is reason enough to make happiness an important priority for parents, educators, researchers, and medical professionals alike, along with the simple fact that we all like to feel happy!

I disagree with your comment that ‘Happiness is not a state but a trait.’ I see happiness as a purely internal construct. I choose to be happy regardless of the people or things going on around me. Those people who look for happiness in others, outside of themselves, bounce back and forth between some fleeting form of happiness and unhappiness. If they would instead see happiness as an internal construct, man vs himself, they wouldn’t be dependent on someone else for their personal feelings of happiness. Because really, you don’t have the power to change others… But you do have all the power you need to change how you choose to see and react to what’s around you. The ball of your happiness is 100% in your court.

Just finished your article on happiness, or SWB and meaning . As stated in your article, happiness is fleeting and subject to feel good material goods and personal objectives. Having sex, kids, buying a new car, an opioid response. However, I thought life was supposed to have meaning that would contribute to my happiness. I chose a career based on what I thought I could contribute to my own and others lives. Rather naïve on my behalf and futile at this stage. I’m 72 years old and understand less now about the world as it is than ever before. I’ve seen the horrors of war and have moved forward from those days to marrying, having a family and building a career, the dopamine response, however I’ve lost the meaning of life and find myself unhappy, angry, reclusive and frustrated. I have done drugs, tried meditation and read books searching for meaning and happiness, which has been elusive at times. Your article helped put certain expectations of others and myself in perspective and what I need to do to achieve happiness and meaning. Thank you!

You’d think figuring out how to describe happiness would be easy…

but when you’re trying to think of how to express happiness in a sentence, it’s easy to draw a blank. That’s why I’m sharing this list of ways to describe happiness, excitement, and joy. I hope these happy phrases help with your novel, story, or whatever you’re writing!

When I shared my Master List of Ways to Describe Anger the other week, on my Facebook author page , one person told me she expected a paywall when she clicked. That was a pretty nice compliment! So I thought I’d do one on how to describe happiness, too. Most of the time, you can express emotions through internal monologue, dialogue, and actions. Once in a while, though, you run into the need to describe the feeling in the point of view of your character.

There are really infinite ways to convey emotion in writing. I have 100 ways here to write about happiness, joy, contentment, hope, and gratitude here. They’re not in any particular order — really, it’s just the order that I thought of them. 🙂

They aren’t all going to be ones you use personally, because every writer is different! Chances are, they’ll make you think of even more words and phrases.

How to Describe Happiness

his heart leaped up for joy

he felt a surge of happiness

I was paralyzed with happiness

their mood lifted

she was bursting with joy

he could hardly contain his happiness

his mood lightened

my spirits brightened

hope bloomed inside her

happiness glowed inside him

he felt a sudden flare of joy

I could barely conceal my delight

they were flabbergasted with joy

sunshine flooded her soul

his spirits were flying high

her hopes soared

she felt like her feet barely touched the ground

it brought my spirits up

contentment warmed her from within

happiness radiated through him

he’d never felt more alive

she felt fully and wonderfully alive

I was filled with joyful energy

she could’ve wept for joy

I wanted to shout for joy

he was weak with gratitude

his heart pounded with happiness

she savored the feeling of contentment

a sudden feeling of happiness surprised him

an unexpected happiness consumed her

happiness made me feel invincible

joy rippled through him

gratitude welled up inside her

he felt a flush of happiness

happiness resonated through him

she was transported with joy

it was almost too much happiness to bear

contentment tiptoed into her heart

he was overcome with happiness

he’d unearthed a greater joy than any he’d ever known

her spirits bounded higher

it brought him a ray of happiness

she felt a whisper of happiness

he felt an inkling of joy

she felt a stab of hope

satisfaction settled in his soul

happiness washed over her

his soul took flight

she felt in love with the whole world

he had no words for the gratitude he felt

she was buzzing with happiness

she felt like she was floating

Teaching youth the importance of volunteering.

I pulled up to a red light and on the corner a man stood holding a ragged cardboard sign that read, “ Poor, please help. ” My daughter sat beside me and looked at the man. “ Mom, I feel really bad for him, ” she said as she reached into my purse and pulled out a bill. “ Give this to him, please. ” I looked into her eyes and saw compassion and a commitment to help someone in need. After giving the man the money, I noticed my daughter beamed with happiness , because she had made a difference in someone’s life.

When we help others we feel happy. There appears to be a direct correlation with overall well-being and giving our time, money or other resources to a cause that we are passionate about. Studies suggest that people who volunteer report better health and more happiness than people who do not volunteer. According to a study in Social Science & Medicine, a person who volunteers more than monthly, but less than weekly is 12% more likely to report being very happy and a person who volunteers weekly is 16% more likely to report being very happy. Volunteering weekly is like moving from an income of less than $20,000 to an income between $75,000 and $100,000! So, there are definitely some perks to helping others. With all of these benefits, it’s important to get youth involved in making a difference at an early age.

10 Ways to Help Others:

  • Volunteer. Whether it’s serving meals at a homeless shelter, or orchestrating a clothing drive, there are numerous ways for teens get plugged into the community and make a difference. There are even some great sites, such as DoSomething.org that helps teens begin the volunteering process.
  • Hand out blankets. There are over half a million homeless people in the U.S. Many of those are sleeping on the streets. While a single blanket may seem like a drop in the bucket to the vast level of need, a blanket can keep one person from shivering in the cold. No matter the size of the contribution, when you are on the receiving end it feels big. Plus, teens can learn that it only takes one person to start a domino effect.
  • Help a neighbor. Too often we neglect those who may need us the most, our neighbors. Whether it’s taking over some warm cookies, mowing a lawn, or offering a night of free babysitting, one simple act can go a long way to make a difference in someone’s day.
  • Beautify the community. Spend some time sprucing up the community, collect litter strewn on curbsides, plant some flowers in the park, or throw a fresh coat of paint on fences. Research shows that beautification is a top factor in establishing community attachment and belonging.
  • Visit a nursing home. Day in and day out some of the most treasured people are often forgotten. One visit from an energetic teen can spark a smile and fond trip down memory lane. Whether it’s a lesson in history, or words of wisdom , our senior citizens have so much to offer our teens. This is a gift in which both parties are truly the recipient!

Hold the door open for others . Not only does holding open a door say “ I notice you, ” but it also says “ I care enough to stop what I am doing to help. ”

  • Donate gently used items to charity. What a great way to accomplish two things at once, clean out the closet and give items to those in need. Go through closets each season, you'll be surprised at how much youth can accumulate.
  • Organize an event. Whether it’s organizing a local book drive for children in the hospital or collecting cans of food for the local food pantry, there’s always need that’s waiting to be filled.
  • Pay someone a compliment. Nothing can turn someone’s day around like a compliment. A compliment is a great way to say “ I recognized something really good about you… ”
  • Give to charity. Saving allowance is a wonderful way to teach youth money management . What if youth would take a small amount of their allowance and donate it to something they were passionate about? Websites like “ A Platform for Good ” has a list of Apps & Websites to help teens give back and truly make a difference in someone's life.

The beauty of nature and melody of music enhances the feeling of happiness

We must try to listen to music or feel the beauty of nature when we are happy. Happiness is enhanced when enjoyed in nature with the melody of music. Music has the power to reduce the pain of sadness. We have often noticed that people listen to music when they are very sad or depressed. It helps them in ending the pain of their sorrow and makes them feel better.

The best way to keep ourselves stress-free is to be happy. Therefore we must try to find ways to be happy and make others happy too.

Happiness makes us optimistic as the negativity in our mind is the exchange by positive thoughts. This positive attitude makes us more enthusiastic and determined for our goals in life. Happiness is also a key to good health and success in our life.

Things that make me Happy

I strongly believe in the idea of simple living and high thinking. When it comes to the question that what makes me feel happy I am really confused. It is because I find my happiness in very small-small things in life. It will be very difficult to enlist those entire things that make me happy but I will be enlisting few important things that provide greater happiness to me.

  • My Family – Our Parents are the most precious gift by god to us on the earth. According to me, I have never seen god and therefore my parents on this earth are the form of god for me. The quality time that I spend with my family members makes me feel most happy. The intense care and love they provide us are incomparable to anything in this world. Many of the time when my parents are facing some problems or are tensed, it is also depicted on my face too. The smiling faces of my parents make me happy.
  • Some Voluntary Deeds – I used to feed dogs when I was 5 years old. Since then it came into my habit to feed the dogs and cows roaming on the roads. The day I could not feed makes me sad and worried. I find great pleasure in feeding them. I also keep some grains and water in a small bowl on my roof every day to feed and quench the thirst of the birds. This deed makes me happy and I love doing this daily.

I along with some neighborhood friends teach the poor students living nearby our colony. We teach them free of cost. I have learned about this thing from my school. In my school, some of the teachers were said to take evening classes for the poor students without any fee and therefore I thought of starting this work near my house too. This work gives me inner satisfaction that I am going a good job. The happiness that I get in this work cannot be expressed in words.

  • The Beauty of Nature with Music – I love enjoying the beauty of nature with music. The trees, birds, small animals, and their activities make me happy. Music is something that heals my every pain of life. During the morning and evening walks, I feel very happy as I am connected with nature along with the music. It is a great joy to watch the activities in nature with the melodies music. As I am fond of singing so many times I sing because of joy and excitement in my garden. I have visited and love going to the places like waterfalls, wildlife parks, and sanctuaries, and to my village. These places make me closer and connected to Mother Nature and provide immense happiness to me.

Is it Necessary to Gain Wealth and Success to be Happy in Life?

Happiness is about the feeling or emotion of the mind. We can be happy with different things in our life. It is totally a misconception that wealth and success are necessary for being happy. If it would be true then the richest people in this world would only be the happiest ones. We can find happiness in our daily routine life with very small things. It totally depends upon us to search out reasons for becoming happy in our life. Happiness arises from the things that we love to do in our life. It can never be bought with money as many times we see that even after having everything in life people are not happy. It is because they are not having those things in life they love to do or far from things that provide them the happiness.

We can find happiness in every moment we live our life. We can say that when we are happy it is easy for us to be directed towards our goal and get success in life. As positive thoughts will make you more enthusiastic and determined for your aim. It will drag every type of negativity from your mind. Success and wealth are about what have we achieved in our life but happiness is something that is felt.

Happiness lies in accepting the truth of our life and living it most gracefully by enjoying every moment of life. There will be some moments created that will make us feel happy. We love and like to live our life by doing the things that make us happy or reside with ones that make our lives a happier one. It helps in getting a peaceful mind and a healthy body. We are also enriched with positive thoughts when we are happy. It is the most beautiful feeling in this universe.

A Dialectical Meditation on Comfort and Discomfort: How Do You Feel Right Now?

Life is strange in so far as one moment we can feel comfortable with our surroundings or in what we’re experiencing. There are moments we can feel like we’re at the top of a mountain and then shortly thereafter feel like we’ve been pushed off the side because something is introduced that makes us uncomfortable. While some people do a better job at keeping their anxiety hidden, others struggle visibly. There are also people who thrive from the challenges that come with discomfort. There are a range of factors that influence every person’s reaction to discomfort. Some of the factors may include the degree of discomfort something makes a person feel, what makes a person feel uncomfortable, and past experiences a person has had related to a source of discomfort. If someone were leery of the introduction of new things, for example, that person may have faced something difficult in their past that caused them to be uncomfortable and therefore more risk averse. On the other hand, some people are able to cope well enough with newness and experience growth and enjoyment with few-to-no hiccups. Of course, some instances of newness—such as living in a dorm room, in a new city, with a stranger for the first time—may be easier for those who are less leery of newness, even those who crave new experiences may be stretched to their limit during their first semester in college. In the context of the following photo essay, newness will be closely associated with discomfort because that is the dominant theme of my college transition.

During my time in high school, I was typically welcoming of discomfort and could handle it well—even in challenging circumstances. However, I’ve found that since starting college, I’ve become less welcoming of discomfort. Actually, this is sort of untrue; there are times when I sway between welcoming and rejecting discomfort, but for the most part, I prefer to keep things as close to comfortable as possible. This is not because I’m some holed-up-hermit who hides in her shell when things don’t go according to my plan, but because it’s just easier to deal with the inevitable contingencies of life when one has some idea of what to expect. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely times when unexpected things have happened that went amazingly well—these are the times when I’m more accepting of newness—it’s just the fear of something going horribly wrong, for whatever reason, that makes me hesitant to accept the introduction of new experiences, things, and people. As someone who oscillates between welcoming and fearing newness, I’ve found that there are habits of mind that make newness easier to navigate, including having some reliable comfort items to help keep one grounded, trying new things with an open mind, and doing things with one’s full effort—even in the face of an uncertain outcome.

This soft and well-loved comfort object is a blanket that I’ve had since I was born. I was born two months premature, so nothing was ready for me when my mother birthed me—not even a name. When my sister was born, however, my grandma had gotten two blankets for her, so when I arrived, one of the blankets became mine. When I returned home for my first visit during college, I made sure to bring my beloved baby blanket back with me. I originally left it behind because I didn’t think I needed it and didn’t want to risk losing it, but I’ve used it for so long that I can’t sleep comfortably without feeling its softness and weight on me. In life, we sometimes become attached to comfort objects without realizing how much we rely on them and it can be scary or strange to exist without them. Perhaps one day my blanket will be so threadbare and I’ll need to acquire a new transitional object to comfort me.

When one first learns new things, she may be uncomfortable doing them alone until she’s able to master the task. When I first started learning to skate, on a skateboard my older sister gave me, I was so anxious about messing up in front of people that I only did it at night. I waited until 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays to skate in an empty parking lot by my dorm because I knew there would be few witnesses if I fell. Eventually, I looked forward to these 3:00 AM skates as I got better, and I finally grew comfortable enough to skate in public and commute around campus. During one of the last times I skated in public, I was going to pick up a coffee. When I was almost at the coffee shop, I wiped out in front of many people. My body hit the concrete with such force that my earbuds flew out. Since the accident, I’ve only skated in public once. I’m so anxious about wiping out again that I no longer practice in the parking lot at 3:00 AM. Bad experiences can inhibit a person from developing new skills and confidence, which can diminish our lives and make us risk averse.

The whole premise of Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is that getting out of one’s comfort zone can give rise to new discoveries and joys. Trying new things can be a source of discomfort for some and this is definitely true for me—even when it comes to trying something as minor as a new food. While I was up exercising late one night, I got a sudden craving for a smoothie like I used to make at home. When I woke up, I decided to try an acai berry smoothie from a vendor on campus. The smoothie was life changing in the sense that I enjoyed it tremendously and it has become my go-to treat each week. In this photo, viewers see the red lines of the straw and one’s eyes are naturally drawn to the bottom of the cup. Like the lines of the straw that pull our attention forward, the smoothie calls to me like a siren song each week. While I’m usually uncomfortable with new foods, this experience is a small reminder of the what if possibilities in relation to new cuisine. What if I do like it? What if it’s my new favorite thing? The possibility of a positive outcome is why some people are willing to try new things, rather than assuming new things won’t measure up to our expectations.

During spring break, my friend visited me in Chicago for a day. I had recently become acquainted with Gabi and had a general understanding of her as a person and friend, but I had never hung out with her alone before, so I was unsure about how we would get along all day. When making new friends, I find that there are sometimes uncomfortable pauses in conversation when a topic of discussion comes to an end, and we scramble to find a new topic to talk about before the pause gets too awkward. I’m not sure if it was my familiarity with Chicago that helped me avoid this awkward discomfort at times, but I have no memorable moments of uncomfortable silence that I can conjure from this day with my new friend. At junctures like this one it’s preferable to be comfortable with the potential for feeling awkward—especially when there is a variable we’re comfortable with that can help us through the discomfort, such as knowing one’s way around her hometown. I took the risk of discomfort with the goal of potentially deepening a new friendship, through a shared experience, and it made me feel more confident and alive.

This is an image of an assignment I was given in my graphics class. During the beginning of the school year, I often felt like I didn’t belong in the School of Architecture—not because anyone made me feel unwelcome, but because I felt like I was not good enough to study among my talented and accomplished peers. As such, I felt uncomfortable going to and being in the studio for the better part of the first semester, but things started to get easier as I made friends in the program and realized that everyone struggled as much as I did with imposter syndrome. During the course of this assignment, everyone in my year grew increasingly frustrated as we progressed in the drafting process of the Tuscan order because the lines we had to calculate became unbearably small. My cohort and I bonded through our mutual dislike of the tedium of the assignment. While I originally found myself uncomfortable in the studio, I was able to grow more comfortable over time as I pushed through the discomfort, cultivated relationships with my peers, and earned unanticipated recognition for my work in my graphics class.

One day Cole showed up to class with a very daring and hip haircut, but he seemed not to care about his rockstar appearance and explained “it’s just hair—it’ll grow back. There are times when I have refrained from doing things or attending events alone because I worried other people would judge me. I’ve missed out on opportunities and fun experiences because I was uncomfortable with the idea that others—and, in most instances, total strangers—would assess me negatively. Cole, however, reminded me that in the end, things only matter as much as we allow ourselves to care about them. At least half of my personal sources of discomfort stem from what others might think of me. If I allow myself to bracket what others think, most of my feelings of discomfort would disappear. If we’re able to stop caring about the small and insignificant judgments of others, we may be able to live more comfortably and unapologetically as ourselves. I end this photo essay with a call to action to encourage readers to embrace discomfort and explore their capacity to rise to their full stature. If we can let go of self-consciousness or the tendency to diminish ourselves to appease other people’s fragile egos, perhaps we can live more authentically and create space to invite others to do likewise.

Harry Samtur, 73, has a laundry list of activities to fill his time.

He takes classes through a program for adults over 50, is part of a biking group, participates in a book club, belongs to a synagogue, and is also an artist, with a show coming up in just a few weeks.

Those activities have been "totally essential" for his well-being, the Minnesota resident said.

"It's great, but it takes an effort," Samtur told Business Insider. "It's something that's very important that I do, and it brings me a lot of joy."

However, Samtur said he still finds himself experiencing loneliness from time to time. Living alone and far from his family, he said he doesn't have the close connections he had growing up, and even though he tries to fill his time with hobbies and social events, feelings of loneliness still emerge .

"When people have families, they have their loyalties to their families, and they're very busy with their families. So when you're alone, you don't always have people to do things with. So loneliness does come up," Samtur said.

An April paper published in the Psychological Science journal highlighted Samtur's exact predicament. According to the paper, loneliness follows a U-shaped curve throughout life— it's higher in younger and older adulthood and lowest during middle age.

Perhaps counterintuitively, happiness tends to follow the same pattern . That means that right now, Gen Z and baby boomers, in particular, might be experiencing a strange juxtaposition: They're happy and lonely at the same time.

Why it's possible to feel happy and lonely at the same time

Happiness and loneliness are "complex emotional experiences that are not mutually exclusive," Eileen Graham, a coauthor of the loneliness study and associate professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University, told BI. Graham's work was conducted before the pandemic and examined over 120,000 participants from nine different countries, including the US, Germany, and Australia.

"You can experience both at the same time, and especially during midlife, that's an emotionally complex time, and people have a lot going on," Graham said. "So people feel maybe a little less happy with their lives in midlife, but it doesn't mean you're also feeling lonely."

Happiness and loneliness can evolve over one's life — and it can impact anyone, anywhere, as the study found.

"Overall, people tended to be more lonely, just persistently lonely, if they had less education, had lower income, and poor health," Graham said.

"And that can help us understand as people enter into older adulthood and are typically just, on average, becoming more lonely anyways, people with certain health conditions or from different socio-economic backgrounds might be even more at risk," she said.

Samtur said that even with the joy he finds from his activities, he knows how detrimental loneliness can be and how hard it is to overcome.

"There's so much polarity, and it's sometimes hard to deal with people, and then you just want to stay home and hide in a corner," Samtur said. "And I know people who do that, but in the end, we're social beings, and we need to have that interaction and go through the difficult experiences with others in order to find the good ones."

'I could be in a room full of people who love me and still feel super lonely'

Donna Basztura, 58, has experienced waves of happiness and loneliness throughout her life. A teenage mom, she experienced joy from her partner and child, but loneliness persisted, as most of her peers were not at the same stage of life.

As Basztura got older, her experiences with loneliness shifted — she had five more kids she raised on her own, and her life is now full with her children and grandchildren. But after moving to Florida four years ago, she's found herself facing a persistent dilemma: she attends every event she's invited to, and she finds joy in being with others, but there's a feeling of loneliness that she just can't shake.

"I could be in a room full of people that love me and still feel super lonely because everyone has someone, their husband, their wife, and that's wonderful. That's what we strive to do for our legacy to leave behind," Basztura told BI. "But then you're still so lonely. I never act like I am. I'm so bubbly. I'm the life of the party. I make sure I'm having fun, but it's just that emptiness and loneliness feeling that really, really devastates a person."

As Samtur and Basztura's experiences illustrate, having social interactions isn't enough to absolve feelings of loneliness. Graham said that social isolation and loneliness "are very different constructs" — the former is measured by how often and how many people someone interacts with within a set period of time, whereas the latter is "an emotional distress" when a person isn't getting what they need out of their social connections.

Balancing loneliness and happiness is an issue researchers are studying. In March, Gallup — in partnership with other organizations — released the 2024 World Happiness Report , and for the first time since the report began over a decade ago, the US dropped out of the top 20 happiest countries.

The happiness report found that social support — meaning positive interactions with neighbors, community groups, or friends and family — and loneliness both affect happiness, and "social interactions of all kinds also add to happiness, in addition to their effects flowing through increases in social support and reductions in loneliness," it said.

"Weak ties," which are small connections people make with others they might not know very well — say, an acquaintance at your gardening club or a barista at your regular coffee shop — can contribute to feelings of happiness but don't necessarily help cure loneliness. However, a 2014 study found that weak ties do have major benefits, helping people feel happier with a boosted sense of belonging.

Basztura wants more than just the weak ties she has in Florida; she's happiest when she's surrounded by loved ones and those who know her very well, like her family. Though she's recently met a man who she enjoys spending time with, she finds herself alone throughout the day due to his work schedule. On top of that, she said a few of her close friends died during the pandemic, so she's lacking female friendships that played a significant role in boosting her happiness throughout her life.

"It's tough when you don't have an actual partner that you can rely on at our age and have gone through the things in life we've gone through in the era we were raised in. And you're just going forward. You're flying by the night pretty much by yourself," Batszura said. "And that emotion, it's really deep. It's really deep. I hide it well, but it's deep."

She made an effort to join clubs focused on fitness, like hiking or kayaking, but even surrounded by people, she didn't quite feel the connections she was hoping for.

"I could find enjoyment, I could find happiness, in swimming, camping, whatever," she said. "But again, I'm camping by myself. So the loneliness is absolutely still there."

'You have to solve it and figure out the best way for you'

BI has previously reported on how people across different generations experience loneliness. Over a third of Americans aged 18 to 25 reported feeling lonely in a December 2023 survey conducted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Some Gen Zers pay for social connections through activities like fitness memberships. One 24-year-old previously told BI that he spends over $200 a month for memberships at rock-climbing and jujitsu gyms because "if you pay for something, you'll show up to it."

"These types of activities ease the process of making friends more so than free activities because they tend to be more structured," he said. "Basically, you're stuck together with everyone else there and forced into new social situations."

Other Gen Zers have used the return-to-office as a way to facilitate connections and counter loneliness. A 23-year-old told BI that even though she was in "constant communication" with her coworkers, the online work environment meant that she "didn't actually have people around me who were willing and able to chat and talk and help."

Preeti Malani, a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, previously told Business Insider that "being lonely as an 80-year-old may be due to a very different reason than someone who is a 19-year-old college student living amongst a huge group of people."

"You can be surrounded by people and be lonely," she said. "And that college experience or high school experience is a good example where you don't have the meaningful connections with people."

Meanwhile, older adults have turned to apps like Nextdoor and groups at local senior centers to make connections in their areas.

While people of all ages are working to make friends and combat loneliness, Graham said, the problem could be easier to solve at a younger age. That's because a lot of the reasons for loneliness when people are younger, like moving out of their parent's home and trying to build a new social network, are steps that will set up a foundation for later in life.

"I don't necessarily think that loneliness is bad in younger adulthood as long as it's not chronic and doesn't begin to naturally mitigate itself," Graham said.

But for older people, loneliness can be sparked by loved ones dying or social networks moving away, and it's harder for them to stay engaged after facing those losses. Joan Hendrix, 80, can attest. She told BI that after her husband died 10 years ago, she "could not function" due to her grief and the loss of companionship, and while she sought out professional help, she felt that she couldn't burden her loved ones with her feelings of loneliness.

She said that for about four years, she couldn't bring herself to go out and meet new people — that is until she looked out her window one day and saw weeds in her flower garden.

"So I said, 'Oh, I've got to go weed.' And so one day, I just went out and started weeding, and each day after that, I seemed to be able to move and do more things," Hendrix said.

Hendrix said she gradually became more comfortable reaching out to her friends and reestablishing relationships, as well as making new ones through various groups and volunteer opportunities. There are still moments when Hendrix feels lonely, but the overarching emotion she now experiences is joy.

"You learn to cope, and then after a while, you still might struggle, but you're able to cope with it, and you go along, and you do things that you need to do to get better and be happy again," she said.

Hendrix said that recognizing that she was facing both happiness and loneliness is what pushed her to seek help and make connections.

"You have to do a lot of work on your own to get better," Hendrix said. "Nobody can solve it for you. You have to solve it and figure out the best way for you."

‘I feel now we can just start rebuilding as a family’: Brother of Colorado Springs murder victim reacts to sentencing

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - 11 News is hearing from the family of Jeremy Diaz who was killed after being shot at a Colorado Springs gas station. The family of Jeremy “JJ” Diaz was there as Brian Alford was sentenced Wednesday to 38 years in prison for second-degree murder.

“I feel now we can just start rebuilding as a family and not forget my brother but just only remember what was great from this point,” Jeremy Diaz’s brother Christopher Diaz said.

In September of 2022, Diaz was at that store with his son and his wife. While inside Diaz and Alford got into an argument. During the fight, Alford eventually fired his gun and killed Diaz, a father of 8.

A memorial took place for Diaz with family and friends in August of 2022.

“We are happy to move forward and close this chapter and move forward and try to rebuild after such a great loss to our family,” Diaz said.

His brother says his condolences are with Alford’s family.

“Even though we’ve lost someone permanently, they have lost someone in their family as well,“ Diaz said.

Should Trump Be Sentenced to Prison? Two Opposing Views.

Now that Donald Trump has been convicted on 34 felony counts, his sentencing hearing looms on July 11. Below are two legal experts weighing in on the critical question of whether Mr. Trump ought to receive a prison sentence.

The Case for Prison Time for Trump

Having witnessed every day of Donald Trump’s criminal trial for falsifying business records to conceal a sex scandal that threatened his presidential campaign, I strongly believe the former president should be sentenced to incarceration.

I am a lawyer, not a judge, but I have practiced criminal law for over three decades. Under New York law, sentencing should be based on the gravity of the crime — and the 34 offenses on which Mr. Trump has now been convicted are profoundly serious. To find him guilty of felony business record falsification, the jury had to determine that he intended to commit, aid or conceal a second crime by making or causing false entries.

Jurors were given only one option for that second offense. That was the payment of hush money to hide damaging information, “a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election” under New York’s criminal code. Joshua Steinglass, one of the prosecutors, underscored the significance of that in his closing argument, telling jurors, “Democracy gives people the right to elect their leaders, but that rests on the premise that the voters have access to accurate information about the candidates.” Mr. Trump sought “to deny that access, to manipulate and defraud the voters, to pull the wool over their eyes in a coordinated fashion,” Mr. Steinglass said.

Because the legitimacy of our entire system of government rests on free and fair elections, this offense is deserving of punishment.

Sentences should take into account outcomes in comparable cases. When Justice Juan Merchan sentences Mr. Trump, he will do so against a backdrop of many other defendants who have been convicted of this felony. My research for a book about the case, “Trying Trump: A Guide to His First Election Interference Criminal Trial,” included examining almost 10,000 prosecutions for falsifying business records in New York since 2015. In the most serious of these cases, about 10 percent of the total, incarceration was imposed. Mr. Trump’s assault on our democracy is as serious as or more serious than any of those others. My research also showed that first-time offenders like Mr. Trump are not exempt from sentences of incarceration, nor should they be if, like the former president, their offense is serious enough.

Moreover, Mr. Trump has shown absolutely no contrition. On the contrary, he has been defiant in the extreme. Almost every day, he left the courtroom to stand before a gathering of reporters in the courthouse and spew disinformation about the case as well as vilify the judge; the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg; and others in the most outrageous and inflammatory terms. On 10 occasions , Mr. Trump defied the gag order that the judge imposed to protect witnesses and jurors. Under New York law , all of that can and should weigh in favor of imposing a prison sentence on Mr. Trump.

The court may also take account of the defamation, sexual assault and civil fraud verdicts that have already been levied against him. This is allowed under the principle that the defendant’s history and character bear upon his sentence, and this abhorrent history suggests prison time is warranted.

Finally, sentencing is about not only accountability but also deterrence. A prison sentence would send a message to Mr. Trump and his followers that you cannot get away with conspiracies to interfere with an election. Because we know that Mr. Trump faces charges related to attempted election interference in 2020 — the election he still claims he won — and is once more seeking the presidency, a criminal sentence, and the deterrence it may bring, is singularly important to justice and as an alarm bell to the American people.

The Case Against Prison Time for Trump

Donald Trump was convicted of a serious felony — 34 counts of falsifying business records with the intent to unlawfully influence the 2016 election. While the statute under which he was convicted permits imprisonment, I would not send him to prison.

I do not have the information that Justice Juan Merchan will have at sentencing — the presentencing report about Mr. Trump prepared by probation officers and the arguments from the prosecution and defense. My conclusions are based on the public record, my years of experience as a federal judge and a criminal defense lawyer and my decades teaching courses on sentencing at Yale and Harvard Law Schools.

Because falsification of business records in the first degree is a Class E felony under New York law, the possible sentence for each count ranges from probation to up to four years in state prison, a fine or a period of supervised probation that ends with the charges being dismissed as long as Mr. Trump has fully complied with the terms of the probation. New York judges have discretion to pick a punishment within the statutory limits.

One starting point in considering the sentence is looking at treatment other defendants have received who were convicted of the same or similar offenses. While defendants convicted of this offense can be sentenced to some prison time, most are not, especially first offenders, as Mr. Trump is. To be sure, this case is unique. It involved more than falsification; it was about efforts to interfere with an election.

Some have pointed to the fact that Mr. Trump showed no remorse after the verdict. Anyone who has a pending appeal — as he will have after he is sentenced — cannot admit to the charges. His admissions would make it impossible for him to defend himself in a second trial, were this conviction overturned.

But not expressing remorse for the crime is one thing. Attacking the jury is another. Prosecutors, like Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, are elected officials who exercise discretion in bringing charges. They are fair targets for a defendant. Still, his decision was tested by a jury, 12 neutral citizens who spent six weeks of their lives listening to the evidence, against a standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, in an adversary system in which Mr. Trump had virtually unlimited resources to hire lawyers. There is no question that his attacks reflect a fundamental lack of respect for the rule of law, which points to imprisonment.

I would also consider Justice Merchan’s contempt findings. Mr. Trump willfully ignored the court’s rules — behavior that strongly suggests that he will not follow other laws.

As far as other pending criminal charges in the District of Columbia and in Georgia relating to the Jan. 6 insurrection and the Florida charges concerning the unlawful retention of classified information, I would not rely on them. Federal law, like New York State law, permits but does not require judges to consider charges that were never adjudicated by a jury. I chose not to consider pending charges while I was on the bench. I believed that it was unfair. Justice Arthur F. Engoron’s civil ruling in February that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud is a closer question because it was a civil case with a lower standard of proof, though it reflected conduct similar to what he was convicted of in this criminal case.

But the bottom line is this: The factors pointing to imprisonment are outweighed by Mr. Trump’s unique position. Justice Merchan pulled his punches in imposing fines, not detention, for Mr. Trump’s repeated violations of his court orders. Anyone else would have been jailed. Mr. Trump no doubt will be treated differently — that is, less harshly — than other criminal defendants in our extraordinarily punitive criminal legal system. But we shouldn’t equalize the treatment of defendants by ramping up everyone’s punishment. Our criminal legal system is far too retributive and leans too heavily on imprisonment, no matter what the crime. Besides, Mr. Trump is different, because he was president and could become president again.
