A great presentation is like getting a new car – it builds anticipation, takes you on a thrilling ride, and ends with you wanting to share the experience with all your friends.
Start with a compelling problem your audience relates to and follow up with a promise of an amazing way they can solve it. This problem-solution dynamic creates a suspense that keeps your audience glued to your presentation.
3. Use a story framework
Finally, use a story framework to give your presentation structure and flow.
Begin with a big idea that underpins your presentation. Then delve into the problem, showcasing why it needs attention. Present your solution, painting a vision of a better future for your audience.

Tell the story of WHO you helped, WHAT the situation was before and after your solution, WHERE and WHEN it happened, WHY it worked and HOW it made them feel.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.
- Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
- Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
- Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
- Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.
As an intern or early career professional, chances are that youâll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Turn your presentation into a video
When you make a recording of a presentation, all its elements (narration, animation, pointer movements, timings, and so on) are saved in the presentation itself. In essence, the presentation becomes a video that your audience can watch in PowerPoint.
So you have two options for turning your presentation into a video that's ready to view:
Save/export your presentation to a video file format (.mp4 or .wmv).
Save your presentation as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx) file. (A PowerPoint Show appears full-screen in Slide Show, ready to view immediately.)
Save as a video file
After you've created your slides and recorded any timing and narrations and laser pointer gestures that you want to include, you're ready to create a video file.
On the File menu, select Save to ensure all your recent work has been saved in PowerPoint presentation format (.pptx).
Select File > Export > Create a Video . (Or, on the Recording tab of the ribbon, select Export to Video .)
In the first drop-down box under the Create a Video heading, select the video quality you want, which pertains to the resolution of the finished video. The higher the video quality, the larger the file size. (You may want to test them to determine which one meets your needs.)
* The Ultra HD (4K) option is only available if you're using Windows 10Â or later.
The second drop-down box under the Create a Video heading tells whether your presentation includes narration and timings. (You may switch this setting if you like.)
If you haven't recorded timed narration, by default the value is Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narrations .
The default time spent on each slide is 5 seconds. You can change that timing in the Seconds to spend on each slide box. To the right of the box, select the up arrow to increase the duration, or select the down arrow to decrease the duration.
If you have recorded a timed narration, by default the value is Use Recorded Timings and Narrations .
Select Create Video .
In the File name box, enter a file name for the video, browse for the folder that will contain this file, and then select Save .
In the Save as type box, choose either MPEG-4 Video or Windows Media Video .
You can track the progress of the video creation by looking at the status bar at the bottom of your screen. The video creation process can take up to several hours depending on the length of the video and the complexity of the presentation.
Tip: Â Â Â For a long video, you can set it up to be created overnight. That way, itâll be ready for you the following morning.
To play your newly-created video, go to the designated folder location, and then double-click the file.
Save as a PowerPoint Show
When someone opens a PowerPoint Show file, it appears full-screen in Slide Show, rather than in edit mode. The viewer begins watching the presentation immediately.
On the File menu, select Save As .
Choose the folder location where you want to store your PowerPoint Show file.
In the Save as type box, choose PowerPoint Show (*.ppsx) .
Select Save .
Why turn your presentation into a video?
When you want to give a high-fidelity version of your presentation to colleagues or customers (either as an e-mail attachment, published to the web, on a CD or DVD), save it and let it play as a video.
You can save your presentation as either an MPEG-4 video file (.mp4) or a .wmv file. Both formats are widely supported and can be streamed over the internet.
Some tips to remember when recording your presentation as a video:
You can record and time voice narration and laser pointer movements in your video.
You can control the size of the multimedia file and the quality of your video.
You can include animations and transitions in your movie.
Viewers do not need to have PowerPoint installed on their computers to watch it.
If your presentation contains an embedded video, the video will play correctly without your needing to control it.
Depending on the content of your presentation, creating a video may take some time. Lengthy presentations and presentations with animations, transitions, and media content will likely take longer to create. Fortunately, you can continue to use PowerPoint while the video is being created
What parts of a presentation won't be included in a video?
The following items won't be included in a video that you create using PowerPoint:
Media inserted in previous versions of PowerPoint. To include these, you can convert or upgrade the media object.
For example, if you inserted the media using PowerPoint 2007, it will be linked and it will play in the presentation. However, when you export the file as a video, the linked media will be dropped. You can convert the file to the new file format (select the File tab, and under Info , select Convert ), or you can right-click the media object and then select it to upgrade; it will embed the file and export it correctly.
QuickTime media (unless you have a third-party QuickTime codec named ffdShow installed and you have optimized for compatibility)
OLE/ActiveX controls
What to do with your video after creating it
After you create a video, you can share it with others by using the following methods:
Email your presentation to others
Save to a file share or other location
Upload it to your organization's Microsoft Stream video-sharing site , as described in the next section, "Save to a video-sharing site."
Save to the Microsoft video-sharing site
After you've created the video file, you can upload it to a video-sharing site. Microsoft Stream is an enterprise video service where people in an organization can upload, view, and share videos. Microsoft 365 business or education subscribers have access to this service from within PowerPoint for Microsoft 365.Â
Select File > Export , and then select Publish to Microsoft Stream .
Type a title and a description for the video.
Set other options, including whether you want others in your organization to have permission to see the video:
Select the Publish button.
The upload process can take several minutes, depending on the length of the video. A status bar at the bottom of the PowerPoint window tracks the progress, and PowerPoint shows a message when the upload is finished:
Select the message to go directly to the video playback page on Microsoft Stream.

Learning how to give a good presentation can dismantle your fears and break down these barriers, ensuring youâre ready to confidently share your point of view.
Itâs the week before your presentation, and youâre already feeling nervous . Maybe thereâll be an important mentor in the room you need to impress, or youâre looking for an opportunity to show your boss your value. Regardless of your countless past presentations, you still feel nervous.
Sharing your vision and ideas with any sized group is intimidating. Youâre likely worrying about how youâll perform as a presenter and whether the audience will be interested in what you offer. But nerves arenât inherently negative â you can actually use this feeling to fuel your preparation.
Itâs helpful to identify where your worries are coming from and address your fears. Here are some common concerns when preparing for an upcoming presentation:
Fear of public speaking: When you share your ideas in front of a group, youâre placing yourself in a vulnerable position to be critiqued on your knowledge and communication skills . Maybe you feel confident in your content, but when you think about standing in front of an audience, you feel anxious and your mind goes blank.
Itâs also not uncommon to have physical symptoms when presenting . Some people experience nausea and dizziness as the brain releases adrenaline to cope with the potentially stressful situation . Remember to take deep breaths to recenter yourself and be patient, even if you make a mistake.
Losing the audienceâs attention: As a presenter, your main focus is to keep your audience engaged. They should feel like theyâre learning valuable information or following a story that will improve them in life or business.
Highlight the most exciting pieces of knowledge and ensure you emphasize those points in your presentation. If you feel passionate about your content, itâs more likely that your audience will experience this excitement for themselves and become invested in what you have to say.
Not knowing what content to place on presentation slides: Overloading presentation slides is a fast way to lose your audienceâs attention. Your slides should contain only the main talking points and limited text to ensure your audience focuses on what you have to say rather than becoming distracted by the content on your slides.
Discomfort incorporating nonverbal communication: Itâs natural to feel stiff and frozen when youâre nervous. But maintaining effective body language helps your audience stay focused on you as you speak and encourages you to relax.
If you struggle to incorporate body language into your presentations, try starting small by making hand gestures toward your slides. If youâre working with a large audience, use different parts of the stage to ensure everyone feels included.
Each presenter has their own personal brand and style. Some may use humor to break the ice, while others might appeal to the audienceâs emotional side through inspiring storytelling.

Here are five presentation tips to help you create a strong presentation and wow your audience:
1. Keep it simple
Simple means something different to everyone.
Before creating your presentation, take note of your intended audience and their knowledge level of your subject. Youâll want your content to be easy for your intended audience to follow.
Say youâre giving a presentation on improving your companyâs operational structure. Entry-level workers will likely need a more straightforward overview of the content than C-suite leaders, who have significantly more experience.
Ask yourself what you want your audience to take away from your presentation and emphasize those important points. Doing this ensures they remember the most vital information rather than less important supporting ideas. Try organizing these concepts into bullet points so viewers can quickly identify critical takeaways.
2. Create a compelling structure
Put yourself in your audience memberâs shoes and determine the most compelling way to organize your information. Your presentation should be articulate , cohesive, and logical, and you must be sure to include all necessary supporting evidence to strengthen your main points.
If you give away all of your answers too quickly, your audience could lose interest. And if there isnât enough supporting information, they could hit a roadblock of confusion. If your presentation is long, including a video for your audience to watch is an excellent way to give yourself a break and create new jumping-off points for your speech.
4. Be aware of design techniques and trends

Industry events are a chance to network with your colleagues and impress distributors â but to really make the most of your time at a conference, you need to learn how to prepare a presentation that engages, informs and leaves an impact.
I've presented at some of the most important real estate and property technology events in the country as the founder of ButterflyMX . Here are a few tricks I've picked up along the way to wow any audience.

1. Getting comfortable with the stage
I recommend taking a walk around the stage before your presentation. By familiarizing yourself with your environment, you can prepare yourself better.
And while you're on stage, a relaxed, comfortable presence goes a long way in keeping your audience engaged . Whether you want to play your presentation casually or more formally, audiences can sense discomfort, which prevents them from fully connecting with your message.
To project your sense of comfortability, focus on your body language . You can project confidence by speaking slowly and clearly and by walking across the stage to keep the audience's attention â even if there's already a podium or lectern set up on stage.
Unfortunately, if a speaker spends too long standing behind the podium, an audience might interpret that as a sign of indecision and inaction from the speaker. Instead, you can remove any barriers between yourself and the audience by using the whole length of the stage.
2. Familiarity with industry statistics
An audience that doesn't know me might be wondering why they should be taking my advice. I certainly don't blame them. When I'm watching a new presenter, I ask the same question.
If you can back up your claims with hard data, your presentation will ring true with listeners. You can cite industry-wide statistics or establish your own bona fides by citing stats that buttress your own credibility by establishing your company's success.
In my case, I'm happy to use a couple of statistics that prove how successful my company, ButterflyMX, is in the proptech industry. 3. Knowing your audience
Depending on who your audience is , you'll have to adjust your game plan and prepare for different things.
I've spoken at conferences where the audiences couldn't be more different â a presentation that wows one crowd might have no information that's applicable to another. As the founder of a property technology company, I have the pleasure of speaking at a variety of different conferences that serve different markets.
For example, integrators and installers might value a talk on product features and hardware more than others. And if I'm presenting to an audience of property managers, I'll know to dial down the technical talk and focus on the benefits a robust video intercom offers, such as simplifying their day-to-day workloads.
Depending on your audience, you need to strike the right balance between talking about hardware specs and features.
4. Designing your slides carefully
Slides are a good opportunity to share the aesthetics, tone and values of your company â but you've got to make sure you use them effectively.
A slide with too much text looks busy, and it'll distract your audience and draw focus away from you. Instead, consider putting that information into your notes and speaking it aloud. Slides should focus on one or two visual elements, like bullet points, charts and graphs.
As for the actual design of your slides, you should ensure that you adhere to your company's brand guidelines. If you're unfamiliar with the concept, brand guidelines are a single, governing document that goes over important design concepts like the colors and logos that your company has.

5. Asking for audience participation
Asking for audience participation is the ultimate way to ensure everybody is locked in and paying attention â but it's also a double-edged sword. You also need to be prepared in case asking the audience to participate doesn't necessarily go your way.
For example, you might generally ask if an audience has any questions at the end of your presentation. But you run the risk of running into a hostile, bad-faith question â or you might even be met with silence.
That's why I'd recommend you give the audience questions and tasks that have a little more structure. You could do things like asking for a show of hands, asking for specific anecdotes or taking a poll.
Polls have gotten an especially high-tech upgrade recently â see if you can set up an electronic voting system that allows audience members to vote with their smartphones. Then, you'd be able to throw the results on screen and watch them update in real time!
You should pepper these interactive sections throughout your presentation to ensure that audiences are engaged throughout your entire talk.
