UFT’s homework help program

Dial-A-Teacher , the UFT’s free homework helpline, is a lifeline for students every Monday through Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. when school is in session.

It offers K-12 students and their parents homework support from licensed teachers in English, math, science and social studies in 10 languages: Armenian, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), English, French, Haitian-Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog.

“After two years of dealing with COVID, Dial-A-Teacher is back in full swing and excited to serve,” said UFT Staff Director Anthony Harmon, who oversees the program. One of the best aspects of Dial-A-Teacher, he noted, is that teachers use questions to “help kids find their way to the answers.”

Now in its 42nd year, Dial-A-Teacher continued operating during the pandemic. During the past two years, it has focused in part on helping students “recover the basics,” program coordinator Sean Blanks said.

Changes implemented during the pandemic have made it easier for participating educators to reach those who need the help, said Amy Kopchains, a special education teacher at PS 171 in Manhattan and an educator for more than 40 years.

During the pandemic, she said, teachers employed by the program were given access to the Dial-A-Teacher site via their own computers so they could work remotely, in addition to working from their computers at the program’s offices at 50 Broadway. As a result, Kopchains said, “If a student’s doing an assignment, it makes it easier for the student to screenshot something or for me to get on one of the websites they use.”

Kopchains began working at Dial-A-Teacher in 2003. Because students may request help from particular teachers when they call in, Kopchains said she has been able to assist some students from elementary school through high school.

It’s led her to appreciate what she was told when she signed up nearly 20 years ago: “It’s a really nice way to end the day.”

The hotline number to call for homework help is 212-777-3380 .

Check Out e-Books and More from Home

Did you know your IndyPL Library card gives you free access to e-books, music, movies, audiobooks, online courses and more? You can read or listen to books on most mobile devices or your computer.

We partner with several different platforms to provide these services the same way you might subscribe to more than one movie streaming platform (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+) at home.

To see all of our digital collections, go to our e-Books & Streaming page. On that page each service has its own tile to tell you details like loan limits and provide links to each service's website or app. Video tutorials are available for each one.

Some of the services will simply ask you to enter your library card number. Others will require you to set up an account. Either way, your library card number is your ticket to get access. If you do not have an IndyPL library card or need to renew your card, you may be able to apply or renew online .

To assist you, we have created these pages to help you get started:

  • Read e-books
  • Read e-comics
  • Read e-magazines
  • Watch streaming movies & TV
  • Listen to audiobooks
  • Listen to music

Do Research Online

IndyPL Database Categories

The Library also offers dozens of online resources you can access anytime, anywhere. There are several topics you can choose from on our Research page , or you can go directly to Homework Help categories for Grades K-5 and Grades 6-12.

Science Fair Help

Looking for an idea for a science project? Here are several science experiment ideas that use materials easily found in your house. A couple of them might require a trip to the grocery store or pharmacy, but mostly you can just raid the garage, kitchen, or medicine chest for the ingredients. Each experiment will give you directions as well as suggest websites and books that will help you explain what science is at work during the experiment.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy provides free video tutorials and online exercises for students in math, art, computer programming, economics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, finance, history, and more. They provide several helpful tips and tools for self paced learning including daily schedules for several grade levels.

Indiana High School Equivalency (HSE)

The HSE is an alternative for earning a high school diploma in Indiana. An HSE Diploma can be earned after completing a test based on five subject areas (math, reading, writing, science and social studies). If you have specific questions about the HSE dial 2-1-1 to connect with a navigator. (NOTE: This diploma used to be called the GED or TASC.)

Invest In The Future through Education

"It takes a village to raise a child" is an African proverb that means that an entire community of people must interact with children for them to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. Elnora Lynn Perry Shands (ELPS) spent her entire 30+ years as a public school teacher assisting underprivileged families with free tutoring resources in various subjects for their children, teenagers, and young adults. She understood that education is a very important factor for the youth.  She passed away on May 29, 2019; but her legacy will live on for many more years through this foundation/nonprofit and committed volunteers. We are also proud to continue the Annual Free BackPack program with school supplies for children of needy families at the beginning of each school year too.

Core Competencies

Children learn differently at various times in their lives and in many facets. Most learning theories fall into one or more approaches, which is concerned with learners responding to some form of encouraging stimulus such as tutoring.

Elementary School (K-5)

Basic arithmetic and sometimes rudimentary algebra in mathematics, English proficiency (such as basic grammar, spelling, and vocabulary), and fundamentals of other subjects.

Middle School (6-8)

At this time, pupils are given more independence, moving to different classrooms for different subjects, which includes math, social studies, science, and language arts. High school preparation is key.

High School (9-12)

Literature and drama, coupled  - biology, chemistry,  physics,  - algebra + geometry and trigonometry coupled with a plethora of electives. College preparation starts here.

1st Year College Freshman

Getting acclimated to college life, mastering prerequisites, and preparing for a students major's curriculum, can be a challenge, so access to assistance should not be a challenge.

Vocational Tech

Construction, mechanics, technology, etc. whatever the students area of focus is, full support is needed to ensure they're educated and highly skilled. Adults need help too, and that's why we're here.

Online Teacher

Love the Homework Hotline... my kids can get reliable assistance throughout the school year and its free! Thank you!  — Rose from DFW, TX

As a retired professional, I really enjoy assisting kids with their homework and developing a long term work relationship with my peers at the ELPS foundation. — Mike from Prosper, TX

This service allows me to stay ahead of my classwork and earn volunteer hours as a high school student preparing for college. Most importantly, I learned a new skills set to prepare me for my first job this summer 2020. — Janet from Frisco, TX

I went from an average student to a straight "A" student because my tutors really care about me and my school year goals.  thanks so much! — John from Plano, TX

How It All Works?

It's super easy to get started to either receive the help yourself if you are a student OR to aid your children with ensuring that they don't fall behind, can get ahead, and ultimately excel academically.
